In addition, the trend towards digitalization does not stop at the tunnel portal. A shortage of skilled personnel and the ever-present wish to increase workplace safety, quality and system performance automation, operatorassist or even autonomous systems have become key development targets. The paper will present the current state of the art in light of these special conditions.

As an advanced method of rock engineering construction safety monitoring, microseismic monitoring technology can monitor the micro-fracture of rock masses within an effective range, and then perform forecast analysis of rockburst, cracking, falling blocks and other disasters. Although the application of microseismic monitoring technology has become more mature, how to improve its application efficiency remains to be further studied. At present, artificial intelligence has been extensively developed, and the use of intelligent algorithms to improve the efficiency of rockburst forecast can provide a valuable reference for the safe construction of underground engineering. To this end, this paper proposes a microseismic multi-parameter rockburst early warning model based on dynamic Bayesian networks. First, the sensitivity of microseismic source parameters to rockburst forecast is analyzed based on microseismic monitoring data and actual rockburst information of a hydropower station. Second, the main seismic source parameters and their data are selected and imported into a dynamic Bayesian network for learning to obtain the rockburst forecast model. The model is confirmed in its self-validation and K times cross-validation, and the receiver operating characteristic curve of the model is also analyzed, it is found that the area under the curve is close to 1, indicating that the model has good accuracy. Finally, the analysis of the influence strength of the parent and child nodes in the model reveals that the moment magnitude and source scale are the most sensitive parameters, which can be used as an important reference for rockburst forecast.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-economic problems surrounded by sustainability controversies yet continues extraction without considering the balance and finitude of nature. Nature requires restoration of equilibrium if mining and life on earth are to continue. Mining is still practiced according to Agricola’s views and the consequences it has wrought on our planet demand we critically reexamine it from its very core, to its metrics, to its design, to its technology, to how it is taught, and to reconsider its raison d'être in 2017. This paper offers tools to new mining engineers that are required to transform and solve new challenges. The task before us is to formulate an updated core curriculum that meets the demands and realities of the 21st Century. Mining professionals must rethink and reteach how to redesign mines before shovel hits dirt, how to mine with restoration of nature figured in to the mining design. Mining needs a new extractive technology in order to transform the results of its well-known liabilities. Mining has evolved and its future must be different than its past. Our industry is capable of doing this but it needs to be shown the way. INTRODUCTION The statement that ‘mining makes civilization possible’ is of the utmost importance and has the most value to us. We can examine the past and present appropriately to see the future that we are building. Mining must be addressed in a different way that makes a positive difference and improves upon rather than continues to get the negative impacts of the past. See Fig 1. Mining creates disequilibrium in Nature by producing ore, waste, tailing, dilution of resources, toxic, and pollution to its ecosystems. What is next for mining on a limited planet? Delaying the transformation of mining is not an option to developing an updated and modern mining business-as-usual paradigm. It is hurting the essentials of living in a civilization; our livelihood is in danger to the point of unrest in nature as we generate a lot of eco-print by present mining practices. So, we are urged to eliminate this bottleneck in life by employing a different design. This way, we will have a vision on how to sustain our civilization. [1]. There continues to be a certain magic attached to the word "Automation". When properly planned for, engineered, installed, and operated, the magic truly does take place - witness certain publicized mineral processing, metallurgical, and chemical plants. They operate successfully with few people, instead of previous dozens as in similar facilities not automated. Production quality has improved. Maintenance costs have been lowered. When such welcome results are achieved, it's proved to be a function of method and procedure in establishing criteria for choosing the intelligence and control systems followed by skilled choice of the specific elements used. The criteria, the bases for decision, are associated with design, construction, startup, operations, and maintenance. How to go about automating any process system to achieve the optimum profit depends on attention to all those aspects of a project. None of them can be forgotten if maximum satisfaction is to be gained. Control loops that look wonderful on an equipment. Piping, and Instrumentation diagram can suddenly turn into costly and. annoying problems in the field if there has been too little coordination of design. Panel boards that are literally works of art just before startup can become the largest of white elephants if an air header is inadequately sized and the pneumatic control circuits are sluggish. Conveyor belt replacement costs can skyrocket if a critical discharge chute far away from immediate operator attention lacks a simple yet effective clog-chute switch. Planning, execution, and followup of the work, the skills, and function of-the automating material can make any new project a success. An integrated owner contractor, producer-engineer approach is the key.

From a macro business process perspective, if what we do in the Mining Industry is find material, dig it out of the ground, convert it to a product and sell it, we are in what might be considered a "simple business". If it is so simple, where does information technology fit? How does it affect our industry? Is it a strategic tool for our industry? What approach should we be employing to ensure we are utilizing information technology effectively? How is information technology integrated or tied together with other areas in the organization such as process control? What kind of people and skill sets are required to support the whole area of information technology? What effect does information technology and automation have on streamlining and rethinking the way we do business in the 90's. This paper covers how these areas have been addressed within the Noranda Group of Companies. It reviews how information technology has evolved, the approach, and what effect it has had on a diversified natural resources company in the mining and metals, forest products, and oil and gas industries.

"The Central Bayside System Improvement Project (CBSIP) is a critical element of the Sewer System Im-provement Program (SSIP), a 20-year, $6.9-billion investment by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commis-sion (SFPUC) to upgrade San Francisco’s 100+ years old seismically vulnerable combined sewer system. The CBSIP’s centerpiece, a proposed 10,000-foot-long (3,048-meter-long) Channel Tunnel, will provide reliable and redundant gravity conveyance and storage of combined wastewater flows from the northern and central parts of San Francisco to the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant (SEP) while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements for combined sewer discharges to the Bay. A tunnel with a diameter of 23 to 30 feet (7 to 9 meter) is being planned using pressurized-face tunnel boring machine technology. Project challenges include tunneling through Franciscan Bedrock, mixed ground conditions in close proximity to the Bay, connector tunnels and shafts, construction in congested urban environment, and challenging real estate issues for shaft access. BACKGROUND AND NEED FOR TUNNEL The City of San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. About 850,000 people live in the city and many more come to work, for tourism, and for attending conferences. The SFPUC is a department of the City and County of San Francisco that provides energy, drinking water and wastewater services to San Francisco, wholesale water to three Bay Area counties, and green hydro-electrical and solar power to San Francisco municipal departments. The SFPUC wastewater system includes tunnels, large storage/transport boxes, 1000 miles of collection sewers, 28 pump stations, and three wastewater treatment plants. San Francisco’s combined sewer system collects both wastewater and stormwater in the same sewers, which is then pumped, treated to stringent state standards and discharged into the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean. After decades of service, much of the sewer system is nearing end of its working life. During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, damage to SFPUC water and wastewater infrastructure was extensive. The 11,200-foot-long (3,400-meter-long), 66-inch-diameter (1,676-mm-diameter) Channel Force Main, built in 1976, and a critical component of the SF wastewater system was also damaged. This force main carries 70 percent of the bayside dry weather sewage flow from the northern and central part of the city to the SEP. The force main is at the end of its life and was not constructed to the current seismic code; in addition it has no redundancy. Figure 1 shows the project background and the force main that will be provided redundancy by the new gravity tunnel."

The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.

Several years ago it was decided that ASARCO was in need of a good mine scheduling program to complete the computerized open pit mine planning package that was being used on new prospects and operating properties. A trial and error approach was being used to schedule a mine on a year by year basis, but this was time-consuming and far from offering an optimum solution l. Due to the magnitude of time and expertise required to develop such a sophisticated computer program, it was decided to search outside of the company for one already developed and available for purchase, This proved fruitless and therefore proposals were requested from consulting firms that had the expertise to develop such a program. Out of the five firms that submitted proposals, the one chosen was Systems Control, Inc., (S.C.I.) of Palo Alto, California. S.C.I. was selected because it was felt that they offered the greatest capability in the mathematical solution of complex problems. But due to their lack of mining expertise, a cooperative venture was developed whereby ASARCO would supply this mining knowledge. The selection of this vendor, the formulation of the contract and specifications, and the development of the computer program required about 3 years to accomplish.

Research conducted in South African mines has demonstrated the benefit of ground penetrating radar for the detection of geologic features and hazards. This is crucial for safety and production considerations in underground mines that are as much as 4 kilometers deep. This paper describes a new ground penetrating radar system designed specifically for high quality data acquisition, in the harsh conditions of deep underground environments, for use by operators with minimal geophysical experience. Design criteria included automated functions, intrinsic safety, light weight and minimal power requirements. Data is processed on the ground surface by geoscientists using a PC.

A potentially cost effective technique for the reclamation of heavy metal contaminated soils and sediments involves the technique of froth flotation. Heavy metals sorbed to clays in the soil may be sulfidized by the introduction of sodium sulfide and floated using a dithiophosphate collector. Separations were obtained where up to 78% of all copper ion was removed from the system. Selected samples were floated in a column cell but little advantage was seen.

Analysis of AI, As, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, K,. Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, 11, V and Zn in various types of samples collected at Van Stone mine (a Pb-Zn deposit in Washington) and surrounding areas indicates that the concentrations of several elements in water, soil and sediment are higher than their background. values. Concentrations of metals in water decrease sharply downstream and are below the maximum contaminant levels specified for drinking water. Under present physico-chemical conditions, contamination of water is insignificant but the enrichment of heavy metals is found in soil and sediment.

In-pit identification of neutral waste rock at the Zortman and Landusky minesites in Montana, by visual and chemical analy­ses, will assist in proper segregation and placement of rock so that soil and water resources can be protected. The use of too few or very general segregation criteria to identify neutral waste rock can result in ineffective waste rock segregation. Conversely, the use of overly restrictive criteria can result in the unnecessary loss of valuable reclamation material that would otherwise have to be mined elsewhere and hauled to the site. Recognition of nonre­active materials can be accomplished on a site specific basis with the use of visual observation and simple chemical analyses. The choice of chemical parameters used to analyze rock samples is constrained by the length of time needed to conduct the test. These analyses must require no more than 24 hours to complete so mining can proceed without delay. Limits set for the chosen parameters must be reasonable and defensible. To achieve these objectives over one thousand samples were collected at the Zortman and Landusky minesites and clas­sified by rock type, total sulfur content, paste pH, and net neu­tralizing potential (NNP). In addition, over 22 humidity cell kinetic tests were conducted to help corroborate static results for waste rock. Another 8 humidity cells were configured in series to test waste rock blending and waste rock/limestone capping alternatives as mitigation for acid rock drainage. Leachates were analyzed for pH, conductivity, alkalinity, acidity, sulfate, Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mg, and Cr in some cases. Petrographic analysis, as well as total sulfur content, paste pH, and static and kinetic test results identified three geochem­ically different waste rock groups: 1) Archean amphibolite gneiss and Paleozoic carbonates and shales, 2) Tertiary syenite porphyry, and 3) other less abundant Tertiary igneous and Archean metamorphic rocks.

Acid rock drainage is one of the most complex issues facing regulators and mining companies for management and remediation of mining wastes. All mining waste units, including open pits, underground workings, tailings, waste rock and leached spent ore have the potential to generate acidic leachate based on the acid generation or neutralization potential of the material. This paper uses a case study of the Walker Mine in northern California to give an overview of the available control and mitigation methods. Wetland design is emphasized as a low-cost alternative treatment option for wastewater remediation. The Walker Mine is located on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada, 20 miles north of Portola in Plumas County, California. The Walker Mine was an active copper mine between 1915 and 1941. During active mining, tailings were discharged into an area 1 mile west of the site at the confluence of Dolly Creek and Grizzly Creek. In addition, there were two main sources of metal-rich, acid waters impacting Dolly Creek: discharge from the mine tunnel portal, and seepage and surface runoff from waters contacting mine waste downslope from the portal area. A mine portal seal was installed in 1987 which prevented the majority of mine water drainage from further contaminating the area. Minor drainage from the portal and seeps discharge into a holding pond which overflows into Dolly Creek when elevation exceeds 6,200 feet. A site characterization study was performed to evaluate the potential water quality threat to Dolly Creek from mine tunnel discharge and waste rock seeps. Based on the results of this study several remedial options were investigated, both on a design and cost basis, to determine which abatement alternatives could be realistically implemented. The remedial options considered include both in situ containment (landfill, waste pile) or removal (backfilling into underground workings and/or sinkholes) of solid wastes. Waste water remedial options include long-term, seasonal treatment of the portal mine water, or long-term, passive treatment of portal discharge and waste pile leachate.

Low cost, greater operating flexibility, and relatively simple operation are just three of the reasons for using minicomputers in the mining industry. No less than a dozen US manufacturers have sold the new generation of minicomputers to mining operations in the US and the world. Many manufacturers produce several models of minicomputers, each with excellent calculating capabilities. Prices for these "mini-giants" range from about $10,000 for a basic system to over $300,000 for a very powerful, sophisticated system with numerous peripheral devices. While the acceptance of minicomputers by the mining sector has lagged behind their penetration into other businesses, mines with minicomputer capability-especially remote mine sites-have found applications in practically all areas of operations including standard payroll processing, mineral deposit modeling and planning, surveying/mapping, production reporting, and daily production scheduling. In fact, the only limit to the further application of minicomputers in mining is the user's imagination. There are some obstacles to the accelerated use of minicomputers in the mining sector: the limited amount of software available, limited information on site-specific uses, and limited interest in the mining market by manufacturers. The latter is especially significant in light of the fact that many manufacturers queried in a recent telephone survey did not compile statistics on locations of their units in mining. The general consensus is that mining sales represent less than 1% of the total market. Many manufacturers do believe that market dynamics will increase their future research and development for the mining industry. The minicomputer was introduced in 1968, when Digital Equipment Corp. of Maynard, MA, developed a small computing device-the PDP-8 minicomputer. It is important to note that since then, it has become increasingly difficult to precisely define a minicomputer (see box, page 1582). The mini has evolved to surpass the capabilities of many of the large computers (mainframes) of 1968, and some models rival the mainframes of today.

The flooding of open pits is now receiving considerable attention from the mining industry as an option that may minimize environmental impacts, particularly when anoxia in pit-lake deep waters can effectively eliminate oxidation of pit-wall sulfides. This paper describes a state-of-the-art, coupled physical-geochemical pit-lake model. The model is used to verify that a controlled, two-stage infilling of the open pit at the Kori Kollo gold mine, southeast of La Paz, Bolivia, would result in a cost-effective, environmentally responsible closure strategy. By filling the pit initially with highly saline surface waters and naturally saline deep groundwater and then capping with fresh river water, a very stable and strongly stratified pit lake will be developed. In addition, the stratification will result in the isolation of metal-rich saline bottom waters from surface waters of good quality. Results of this model provide defensible predictions of the physical stability and evolution of water quality in the Kori Kollo pit lake over time. The model results indicate that anoxic conditions will develop below the fresh-saline water boundary within one to two years, followed by the rapid onset of sulfate-reducing conditions in the bottom waters. Hydrogen sulfide produced by sulfate reduction will readily react with dissolved metals to form highly insoluble metal sulfides. The process results in the gradual removal of metals from the water column and the concomitant improvement of water quality over time. A notable benefit of this strategy is that it can be fully integrated with other mine site closure options as well as future environmental-management strategies. The proposed plan allows for the safe isolation of saline waters, the potential for passive treatment in anoxic bottom waters of ARD seepage from other mine site operations, should they arise, and a repository for future reactive wastes that could be effectively isolated in a physically and chemically stable environment.

Managing a mine or mineral processing operation in today's environment presents many unique challenges to mining companies. In recent years, headlines around the world have publicized major incidents such as those associated with the Marcopper Mine in the Philippines, the cyanide release in Guyana from the Omai gold mine and numerous other mishaps associated with mining. These notable upsets were due to engineered system failures, either during normal operations or as a result of uncontrollable events. There fore, many mining firms are attempting to assess their overall risks and establish some priority for expenditure of limited operational and environmental budgets. Failure of an engineered component can have dire operational consequences that affect profitability until repair or replacement can be completed. In addition, there may be significant environmental consequences associated with the engineered system failure. This, too, may affect profitability for an extended time or even the viability of an operation. An engineered risk assessment (ERA) can support a mining company's efforts to cost effectively manage environmental risks associated with the operation of its facilities. The ERA approach also provides information about the current condition of engineered systems. This ERA approach provides a systematic review of the risks of an engineered system failure and the possible associated environmental consequences at mining company facilities. This approach has been successfully applied to many industries and types of engineered systems (Barneich et al, 1996; Whitman, 1984; Power and Tomkins, 1974; Keeney, Nair, and Kulkarni, 1979). This approach evaluates all mining and mineral processing facilities located at a single site and compares them with similar facilities located at multiple mine sites. The ERA approach has been applied to a mining, milling, smelting, leaching and refining operations. These assessments can be part of a comprehensive environmental program to aid in the recognition and cost effective management of the potential environmental risks associated with the operation of facilities. INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines (The Bureau) remote sensing researchers at the Denver (CO) Research Center, have been investigating computerized methods to detect and map surface linear features called "lineaments" for ground hazard assessment in mines. Many of these lineaments at the test mine site were found to correlate to subsurface geologic discontinuities such as faults, fractures, and joints that intersect coal seams at depth. These features adverse1 y affect the roof and rib integrity in underground mines, thus contributing to rock failures that may result in injuries to mine workers and loss of production. Advance knowledge of the existence of such hazardous geologic features can aid in mine planning and development. Lineaments may be observed in a variety of images of the earth's surface. Linear features that can be observed using Landsat mu1ti spectral scanner data (MSS) images range from regional (greater than 3 miles in length) to an intermediate length of from 1 to 3 miles. These images are recorded in discrete radiation bands in the green, red, and near-infrared portions of the el ectromaynetic spectrum. These data are acquired from the EROS Data Center of the U.S Geological Survey, Sioux Falls, SD, in digital format on magnetic tapes that are suitable for processing on certain minicomputers. Shorter lineaments length (less than 1 mile) can be observed in high- to low-a1titude aerial photography, radar, and infrared images with image scale ratios of 1:1,000,000 or less. These linear features can correlate to smaller dimensioned faults, and to fracture and joint sets at the local geologic scale. Other informational sources can help substantiate 1ineament analyses, such as well logs, mine naps, topographic data, and geophysical data acquired over the study site. During the design and construction of a coal preparation facility, there are many items that can cause serious problems if not properly handled in the early stages of a project. These problems can be a detriment to smooth owner/ contractor relationships, the designing of a flow sheet, the selection of equipment, the design of the facility, the maintenance of schedule and budget, and a smooth start-up. It is the purpose of this presentation to identify some of these problems and to suggest steps that can be taken to reduce or eliminate their impact.

Management of mineral resources through land-use planning procedures is not a new concept, particularly at the local level of government. Colorado may well be one of the first states, however, to vigorously attempt to evaluate on both the state-wide and regional basis, mineral resource potential and to make certain that potential for mineral resources is included as one of the primary factors considered in the local land-use decision-making process. Less than a decade ago the only consideration given to mineral resource extraction, particularly aggregate resources, was whether or not they could be produced at the particular time they were needed. This attitude has now shifted to the other extreme, not only in Colorado, but other states as well, so that other interests, especially housing projects, mountain subdivisions, recreational and wilderness areas are gaining prime consideration in land-use decisions. Ideally, in a more acceptable median position, mineral resource potential would receive definite consideration at the local level.
