The Duval Corporation porphyry copper deposits at Copper Canyon and Copper Basin, though widely separated, form an economic unit requiring integrated exploitation. Contrasts in mineralization, host rocks, and mode of occurrence present unique mining and milling problems. Mixed oxide-sulfide ore is treated in extensive dump leaching facilities in both areas. Complex copper-gold-silver ore is treated in a 4,000 tpd mill at Copper Canyon. In both areas, hypogene metallization occurs within large aureoles of metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration related to quartz monzonite intrusions of mid-Tertiary age. Supergene processes further altered the rocks and enriched the hypogene protore. At Copper Canyon, hypogene copper and iron sulfides with gold and silver occur in fractures, as partial replacement of favorable beds, and as disseminations in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The lower part of the Pennsylvanian Battle Formation was a particularly favorable host. Metallization occurs to a lesser extent in quartz monzonite. Metal zoning is well developed. The deposits at Copper Basin consist principally of supergene copper minerals in arenites of the Cambrian Harmony Formation. Oxidation of hypogene copper and iron sulfides in tactite zones has formed at least two commercial deposits; intersections of fractures with favorable beds exerted important ore controls.

The cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis are located side by side on a double loop in the Mississippi River near the eastern boundary of Minnesota. Both cities lie on both sides 'of the Mississippi River, which in this region describes an S-shaped curve. The two cities together have a population of over 600,000 people, gathered in an area which has grown to be a single urban district inasmuch as the two cities have expanded until they occupy all the territory formerly between them, though the business centers are ten miles apart. St. Paul is located at the head of navigation on the Mississippi River and Minneapolis, farther upstream, at the Falls of St. Anthony. A recent water¬power development below the Falls of St. Anthony, constructed by the Federal Government, has at the same time made possible navigation to the foot of St. Anthony Falls through a lock around the dam which replaces the former rapids. Minneapolis, in 1920, had a population of 380,000 people, and St. Paul, 235,000. The two cities occupy land at an elevation of 700 to 900 feet above sea level. The average elevation is slightly less at St. Paul. Minneapolis has nearly 4,000 acres of parks and park¬ways, while St. Paul has nearly 2,000.

Strategic mine planning focuses on cutoff grade selection, capacity planning and block sequencing. Despite significant knowledge accumulated, potential value can be added to mineral sourcing by addressing various aspects. A case study on a metallic deposit with a lognormal grade distribution examines if grade/metal distribution influences cutoff grade selection. Six data sets with different shape and scale factors, but the same ore tonnage and metal quantity, are analyzed. Results indicate deposits with lower shape and scale factors are more sensitive to metal price and discount rate changes. The study also investigates the effect of economies of scale (EoS) on project value, focusing on the ratio of variable cost to total cost (capacity factor). Two regression analyses are conducted for optimal capacity planning and cutoff grade selection. The first shows capacity planning is highly sensitive to the EoS of mining and mineral-processing costs, with grade variability and metal distribution being negligible. In the second analysis, grade variability and EoS of mineral processing costs are vital for cutoff grade selection.

Macintosh use is becoming more pronounced in many other industries, and com soft-ware is of at least the quality of that available for DOS machines and many workstations. This paper describes attributes of the Macintosh computer family as related to many mine-planning problems and solutions including software, memory considerations, workstations, DOS compatibility, and networking.

A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. In underground coal mining many excavated openings have a relatively short projected life span. To ensure safety for men and materials at a minimum cost over the projected operating life, only pillars for overburden support and roof bolts for support of the openings are used extensively. Mining activity constantly changes the geometry of the mine producing load changes on the structural support members of the openings that often induce unstable deformations which can lead to roof falls or pillar failures. The paper describes how simple deformation measurements can be used to design primary and supplementary roof supports and to predict roof falls and possibly pillar bumps. Specifically, bed separations in the roof measured directly with the help of borescopes and calculated from differential convergence data are used to optimize bolt links or support requirements for chemical stabilization of mine roofs. Roof falls are predicted on the basis of admissible values for cumulative convergence between roof and floor, convergence rate, and the change of the rate of convergence. The pillar extraction operations convergence anomalies detected from contouring identify bump prone pillars, while convergence and pillar dilation determine the yield zone in a pillar to verify pillar softening and de-stressing. The oxygen-rich bath smelting process of copper dross was simulated using Factsage software. It was found that the two-step simulation results agreed better with the industrial data, especially in the speiss. Bi, Pb, Sb, As, and Cu contents in the speiss by two-step simulation differed from the industrial data by 0.6 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 2.6 wt.%, 7.2 wt.%, and 8.6 wt.%, respectively. Twostep simulation results indicated that the speiss partitioning of Sb, As, and Cu increased from 60.1%, 32.3%, and 27.5%to 81.6%, 67.8%, and 47.2%, respectively, with the smelting temperature increasing from 1050 °C to 1250 °C. While the metal partitioning of Sb and Cu increased from 0% and 2.7% to 15.2% and 13.3%, respectively, with the separation temperature increasing from 400 °C to 700 °C.

Lignite is a kind of easy-to-slime and low rank coal. It is hard to be separated by the conventional wet coal beneficiation technologies. Meanwhile, in recent decades, a large amount of fine coal (-6 mm) is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector, which causes a great difficult for lignite beneficiation and upgrading due to lack of efficient technology available. In this paper, a vibrated gas-fluidized bed was used to separate the -6 mm fine lignite particles. Separation experiments of -6+3 mm and -3+1 mm lignite were carried out in a laboratory-scale vibrated gas-fluidized bed. The effects of several parameters including the superficial air velocity, vibration intensity, bed height and exterior moisture content on the separation performance were experimentally studied. The results show that the optimal separation performance was achieved when the superficial air velocity is 0.3, the vibration intensity is 1.4, the bed height is 50 mm, the exterior moisture content is below 4% (-6+3 mm) and 2% (-3+1 mm). And the probably error E values of -6+3 mm and -3+1 mm size fraction of lignite are 0.202 and 0.225 respectively. The results indicate that a vibrated gas-fluidized bed can provide an effective solution for -6 mm lignite separation.

The Hutti Greenstone belt, located in the northern side of Dharwar Craton, India, contains several promising gold fields. It is predominantly composed of meta-volcanics with minor intercalations of meta-sedimentaries. Alkali-SiO2 and Zr-P2O5 diagrams, immobile element trends, and an iron-rich trend on the AFM diagram indicate that the volcanic suite is low-potassium tholeiitic basalt. The lower Mg number, MgO-TiO2, MgO-Ni, and Ni-Zr plots reveal that the basalt was derived from a fractionated, highly evolved magma generated by 10-20% melting of the mantle at 1100°C and 5 kb pressure. The chemical variations suggest that the Hutti metabasalt represents volcanic arc rocks generated at a converging plate margin.

Pyrite cinder is generated by roasting pyrite for sulfur dioxide production. It contains up to 62% iron, but also may contain other hazardous or toxic materials such as Zn, Pb, As, T1, Cd, Cu, Sn and S. Furthermore, the physical characteristics are not properly suited for conventional sintering. As a result pyrite cinder is considered to be unsuitable for iron and steelmaking or for outside storage because of its potential for causing environmental problems. In recent years industrialized nations have put increasing pressure on the manufacturers to either use such waste products or properly dispose of them. In this study, solutions to both the iron recovery and disposal problem were attempted by pelletizing the pyrite fines with internal carbon. The pellets, after hydrothermal hardening, were reduced and melted in a furnace for hot metal production. Hot metal of usuable quality was produced and the hazardous materials were either collected with the fumes or in the slag.

In 2009 the Gold Quarry open pit mine, located 11 km northwest of Carlin, Nevada, USA, experienced multiple large-scale slope instabilities of the upper east highwall that reduced gold ore extraction for nearly 18 months. The slope instabilities occurred within a weak, consolidated sedimentary sequence that exhibits strength characteristics that are transitional between soil and rock. Instability initiated as mining exposed the lower clay-rich sub-units of the Carlin Formation (Fm.). This deformation created preferential flow paths that allowed groundwater from the upper sandy sub-units to infiltrate low permeability clay-rich sub-units, thereby enhancing deformation of the slope toe which in turn destabilized the upper portion of the highwall. The outcome was a 160 m high slope instability that had a lateral run-out of 850 m. The effort to return the pit to ore production required both the geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations and the preliminary remediation mining activity to be concurrent. This approach required the development of detailed safety procedures and a requirement to modify the remediation design as new results were obtained. An initial challenge was to mitigate a near vertical, 90 m headscarp with blast induced, localized slope failures. Back-analyses applying numerical modeling indicated that the failure surface did not coincide with initial interpretations based on field observations; drilling results eventually confirmed this alternative failure geometry. The final remediation design incorporated shallower slope geometries and an approximately 3 Mt buttress along the base of the Carlin Formation and bedrock contact to reinforce the lower clay-rich sub-units. The outcome is a stable highwall within the Carlin Fm. following nearly ten years of repeated slope instability, and an example of the necessity to conduct appropriate geotechnical and hydrogeological studies during the early stages of a new layback evaluation or new open pit development.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. "An average of 1.2 fatalities occur per year in underground coal mines in the United States when a miner is struck or pinned by a remote-controlled continuous mining machine. Proximity detection technology provides a means to prevent these types of accidents by disabling all machine motion when a miner is in close proximity. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed the intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system, which continuously tracks the position of miners near the machine and disables only those machine motions that could cause a pinning accident. This system, previously demonstrated using non-permissible proximity detection hardware, has now been shown to be effective when implemented using an MSHA-approved system as a platform. Performance tests have shown accuracy, repeatability, and stop zone identification to be comparable to or better than the system demonstrated with non-permissible hardware. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining room-and-pillar operations typically use Continuous Mining Machines (CMMs), such as the one shown in Figure 1. When CMMs first became available, they were operated from an on-board operator’s compartment that protected operators from roof falls and other hazards but severely restricted visibility and subjected them to machine vibration and high levels of dust and noise. To solve these problems, remote controls were developed to operate CMMs. Now CMM operators are free to position themselves for best visibility of each mining task and are no longer subjected to the rough motion of the CMM during mining operations or the dust and noise generated by the machine. However, this technological advance removed operators from the protection afforded by the operator’s compartment and exposed them to the hazard of being struck or pinned by the CMM or other large moving machines."

The heap leach process used for recovering gold from oxide and sulfide ores is operated as a closed circuit system in which the cyanide process solutions are continuously recy­cled. In a well-designed operation there is little or no dis­charge of cyanide to the environment. Spent leached ore residues are water washed to remove most of the trace cyan­ides and precious metals remaining after completion of cyan­ide leaching. After the washing step, small amounts of cyanide, metal-cyanide complexes and nitrates remain in the residue. Most of the cyanide and nitrate residue constituents exist in the pore water of the spent ore rather than in the solid mineral fraction. More than 90% of the complexed cyanides in a freshly washed ore residue are present as free cyanide or weakly complexed metal-cyanides. Natural volatilization and decom­position rapidly remove most of these easily dissociable cyanides from the spent ore. Only the stable, strongly com­plexed metal-cyanides, such as gold, cobalt or the ferrocyan­ides and other constituents such as nitrates have a long term persistence in the spent ore residue (Towill et al). Despite washing and natural removal mechanisms, spent ore has the potential to act as a point source of com­plexed cyanides and nitrates for soil and groundwater con­tamination if inadequately contained (Huiatt et al). The groundwater contamination is caused by the leaching of the soluble cyanide compounds and nitrates from the pore water of the residue.

This paper examines the feasibility of combining network modeling and computational fluid dynamics for modeling of underground mine ventilation systems. Both simulation methods have specific advantages and disadvantages for analysis of mine systems. Network modeling is widely utilized by many operations and allows for assessment of current systems and simulation for planning purposes. Alternatively, CFD has been utilized only marginally by operations and is typically a research tool, requiring considerable computational power, complex models, and careful analysis and calibration of results. Network modeling allows for a holistic approach to the ventilation system, giving quantity, velocity and pressure in every branch, but CFD modeling can resolve the flow regime in 2-D or 3-D, which is idea when examination of an area on a more detailed basis is useful, such as dust and gas control. Integration of the two can allow for more flexible systems analysis. The feasibility of integration, along with application to limited underground mine data are examined.

The dielectric properties and flotability of different ranks of Argonne Premium Coal samples are presented. The flotability of different ranks of coal are correlated with the dielectric properties and intrinsic moisture (or bound water) content. Measured dielectric properties of as-received coals and other constituents are incorporated into a mixture equation to calculate the dielectric properties of bound water present in the different ranks of coal. The nature of bound water present in low-rank hydrophilic coals is significantly different from that present in high-rank hydrophobic coals. The water molecules present in low-rank lignite have an oriented dipole-dipole interaction and are tightly bound to the surface. For high-rank coals, the water molecules are not bound to the surface and have a randomly distributed clathrate ice-like structure. Controlled thermal treatment can modify the structural nature of bound water present in low-rank hydrophilic coals and increase their flotability.
