The inadequacy of traditional geostatistical methods for estimating some precious metals deposits has become apparent in the last few years. New methods or estimation such as Indicator, Probability and Multigaussian Kriging are difficult to understand and apply. Case studies using a new method of variogram calculation proposed by Srivastava show the method valuable for variogram estimation in precious metal deposits. Some simple, sometimes unorthodox. estimation methods that have proved useful in Some situations are presented.

Joined modeling of stressed state and induced seismicity is a means to join geomechanics with seismic observations. When applied to quantifying rockburst hazard, it provides, on one hand, estimations in terms of mechanics, such as stress concentration, and, on the other hand, in statistical terms of the risk analysis developed in mining seismology. The modeling became possible due to progress in computers and numerical methods. However, despite tremendous increase of computational abilities, the joined modeling is still quite time expensive. To make it available for wide use and real time simulations, there is need to reduce the time cost of its key stages: calculation of stresses, caused by mining, and simulation of seismic events, induced by these stresses. The present work aims to decrease the time cost. The stages are time costly because of the same reason, which is a very large number N (up to millions) of elements, representing rock structure, openings and flaws. This leads to immense computational complexity (roughly of order N2) of conventional accounting for pairwise interactions between the elements. The complexity may be notably reduced, when employing the fact that interactions decrease with growing distance between elements. Specifically, the fast multipole methods (FMM) avoid the complexity N2, by employing translations of far-fields from whole collections of sources. This reduces the complexity to the order 22, where p is the number of terms involved in a single translation, is the number of translations, and is the dimension of the quantity translated. Still, for conventional FMM, the complexity remains too high to routinely perform joined modeling of stresses and seismicity.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two-and three-entry gate-road systems at a deep underground coal mine located in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau of Mines hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in roof falls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. Several years ago I wrote a comprehensive paper 'entitled, "Future Trend of Bulk Carriers" dealing with the principle dimensions of vessels and how they can be predicted; then with loading and unloading of large carriers, especially considering various designs of "Self Unloaders". Since writing the paper, many large bulk carriers were basically built along the, predictions made. Maximum size today is in the 150,000 DWT class, with few exceptions, which are combination carriers (ore-oil) or OBO's (oil-bulk-ore) in the 200-250,000 DWT class in the same paper, many references were made cautioning engineers not to design ports which could be "obsolete tomorrow", however, these were not always followed. Nevertheless, during the past few years many modern ports were built signaling the beginning of a new area of "Super Ports". Super Ports can be built for various reasons, most important to provide transfer stations where bulk material is received from large carriers then transferred to smaller vessels or barges for distribution. Obviously, opposite movement of bulk commodities can justify the building of "Super Ports", however, these are not as difficult to build for many reasons. The Material Handling Industry has developed efficient means of unloading smaller vessels or barges with continuous-type unloaders and has mastered the art of storing, reclaiming, and moving large quantities of bulk material to high-capacity shiploaders. Nevertheless, the industry has failed to design and market efficient ship unloaders which in any way could match the presently attainable shiploading rates. For these reasons, it is considerably more difficult to build "Super Ports" for incoming rather than outgoing bulk materials with large bulk carriers. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate on problems affecting high-capacity, continuous ship unloaders, especially involving large bulk carriers. For better understanding, some references will be made to the smaller, continuous barge or ship unloaders, but only as the principles affect the larger units. Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management has worked with the State of Montana and other agencies to identify and prioritize these sites on BLM administered lands. Following completion of the AML inventory work, the Bureau began an aggressive program to clean up priority sites. This presentation will highlight completed work as well as work in progress on several sites.

The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and wash- ability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected was statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size-consist, and yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

Simulation is a general term which commonly appears in the technical literature and which can have different meanings to different people. One interesting definition (9)* applicable in an engineering context is the following: "Simulation is the use of a model to study a problem." In most cases, the model referred to in the above definition is a simulation model constructed in a computer language and implemented on a computer in order to solve the problem under consideration. The application of computer simulation models to the study of problems in materials handling and earthmoving has been successful in the past. Generally speaking, this method has been used where the system to be studied has many variables and where the ability to predict the outcome of the system under different sets of conditions is difficult. The prime reason for using such a model is to evaluate the numerous likely ways of operating any particular system without the necessity of actually conducting full-scale field tests. The simulation model presented here is such an application made to the process of tunneling and, in particular, to the process of tunneling with a boring-type tunneling device. At first glance, the process of tunneling may not appear to be particularly complex and susceptible to study by a computer model. However, a close analysis of the tunneling process will reveal that it is rather complicated as a result of limitations placed upon the system by restricted space in the tunnel, geologic variations along the tunnel

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the former U.S. Bureau ofMines (USBM) have given a significant effort over the past four decades in researching and developing engineering controls and interventions to reduce mine workers’ dust exposures during the bagging and palletizing of industrial minerals. Workers performing manual bagging and palletizing of 50- to 100-pound bags typically have some of the highest dust exposures of all workers at mining and mineral processing operations. This paper will provide an overview of available dust control technologies for bagging operations and present the findings of a recent case study that was conducted at four different industrial sand operations to identify the current types of bagging and palletizing technologies being used and to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing workers’ exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. An evaluation will also be performed to determine if further reductions in respirable dust levels can be achieved by incorporating additional modifications or improvements into the existing technology.

This work focused on identifying, examining and ranking the physical and environmental hazards at inactive and abandoned mine sites in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Earlier inventory projects in the Black Hills concentrated on federal lands, while more recent efforts have examined abandoned mines on state and private lands. The more recent efforts are a result of passage of legislation by the State of South Dakota requiring a comprehensive inventory. The inventory information provides criteria for identifying those sites that require further investigation or characterization of the physical safety or environmental hazards. For most AML sites in the Black Hills, location information is all that is typically needed, because the majority of sites pose little environmental or physical hazard.

"To more rigorously address tunneling risks to above-ground structures, vulnerability evaluation of all structures along a tunnel route is required. This multi-block area along the route can be considered a district. To fully assess each structure within a tunnel’s zone of influence, a multi-block or district-level model may provide new insights as to risk evaluation and mitigation strategies. However populating such a model with the existing geometry of the built environment poses a major challenge as measured drawings are not readily available for all structures along a tunnel’s route. Cost-effective population of such a model could arguably involve remote sensing data in the form of laser scanning or photogramme-try. However even for unreinforced masonry structures, where external, above-ground geometries can be captured, without a prohibitively expensive building-by-building, in person survey many factors would remain unknown. To consider these uncertainties in an automatic way, a performance assess-ment framework is proposed. Such a framework allows a more rigorous, initial, risk quantification than is currently possible within the simple empirical models generally being used in industry when tunneling risk is initially assessed. This paper introduces (within the allowable space limits of this format) consider-ations for auto-population and application of a district-level, tunnel-risk screening tool. INTRODUCTION Challenging topography, intense urbanization and infrastructure development, combined with limited land availability and a growing awareness of environmental issues have lead to increasing usage of un-derground spaces to control aboveground traffic and provide essential services in metropolitan areas. Tunneling, however, is not without its own risks, especially with respect to aboveground structures whether it be widespread minor damage (Burland et al. 2001) or the more notable, although less fre-quent, large-scale collapses such as the 2003 Shanghai (Allianz 2015) or 2004 Singapore (Magnus et al. 2005) events."

The development of the Montreal metro extension Line 5 -Blue Line- toward the northeast are located between the existing Saint-Michel station and Anjou. It consists of 6-km long two-track tunnel, five new stations and six auxiliary structures. Most of the tunnel (5.5 km) will be excavated by a 9.6 m diameter shielded rock TBM and supported by a precast segmental lining system. TBM will be fitted for probing and preexcavation grouting to control water inflow into the tunnel during the excavation. This paper presents major design aspects of the TBM tunnel including alignment, geological condition, spaceproofing, precast segmental lining, and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring.

An efficient recovery of finely divided magnetite particles of 400/500 mesh from a mixture of magnetite/silica particles has been investigated by imposing a delicate balance between centrifugal and surface tensional forces on these particles. The effect of centrifugal force, surface tensional force, density and size of particles on the overall metallurgical efficiency has been examined. A mathematical model based on a momentum balance on the particles at the liquid/liquid interface has been developed. The validity and limitations of the model are discussed in view of the experimental results obtained.

Blastings always generates induced vibrations through seismic wave, these are lost energy from the blasting and therefore causing the disturbance of slopes and structures near the blast source. Most of the components of an open pit mine have to reach a physical stability, especially during its closure process. Aiming to develop a vibration prediction model using the historical records from an open pit mine located on Peru, this research has two main focuses depending on the distance from the blast source to the structure: to protect the final slopes and to protect the villagers houses. Both are based on the Devine model of the Square Root Scaled Distance (SRSD) to predict the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV). The Mid field model, where is found mainly final slopes from the pit, limited by the failure criteria of McKenzie based on the geo mechanical properties of the rock mass. The Far field model ranges distances where are located the most community households, limited by the German rule DIN 4150 for highly sensitive structures. Both scenarios resulted on a distribution abacus to limit the weight of used explosives to get the best operational advantage and structure safety.

The very high cost of exploration and development for new mines requires that a carefully planned, complete, and technically competent geotechnical evaluation be applied to the ore body and the surrounding rock. The ground conditions must be predetermined sufficiently so that, during the development and exploitation stages, unexpected conditions will be of minor consequence. Ground conditions are a major factor affecting the cost of excavated items such as shafts and inclines. For example, shafts cost less to sink in tight dry ground than in highly pervious ground below the water table, with all other factors being equal. The proper mining methods also is dependent upon the ground conditions. Bad ground for room-and-pillar mining may be ideal for caving methods; whereas, ideal ground for room-and-pillar mining would be extremely difficult for a caving operation. To do a proper engineering design, the parameters of strength, deformability, and permeability must be determined, in addition to the loads that will be applied as a result of the mining activity. The required degree of accuracy for each parameter depends upon the individual case. For example, the strength of massive rock in which openings of small cross-sectional area are to be driven at shallow depths needs to be resolved only within several thousand kilopascals (pounds per square inch). Under such conditions, the rock strength is not likely to be of great economic importance unless the rock is very weak. Large openings at great depths require a much more accurate appraisal of rock strength and deformation characteristics. Ground water conditions are important at any depth. Today, a number of techniques exist for evaluating conditions before opening up the ground for development. These techniques and their applications are described in more detail later in this text. The evaluation of ore body ground conditions should start at an early stage, as soon as the deposit has been proven viable for a mine. Economic geology investigations mainly serve to define the value and limits of the ore deposit. To do this properly, the geology of the site is determined in at least as much detail as is necessary to define the "controls" for the ore body. The ground-condition evaluation must determine the engineering properties of the ore body and the surrounding material. This includes the structural geology as it relates to rock strength; i.e., the frequency, extent, and orientation of discontinuities such as faults, joints, bedding, etc. Ground water conditions also must be determined. It is important that the detailed geology of the site be determined at an early date. Reasonable geotechnical parameters must be established during this time period, so they can be used in mining model studies that include both physical and mathematical models. The ultimate goal bf-the geotechnical evaluation is to predict the ground behavior as the excavations are made and how the ground behavior will affect the safety and economic well-being of the mine. The formulation of a ground-condition evaluation program should be planned carefully to determine the particular geotechnical parameters only in as great a detail as will have a bearing on the mine design. For instance, it is not necessary to make numerous triaxial tests in strong rock when the mining will be conducted within a few meters (feet) of the surface in a regime of gravity loading and an absence of tectonic stresses. Similarly, it is not necessary to invest large amounts of time and effort in the determination of joint strengths if the orientations of the joints are such that the failure could not occur along them. Generally, the determination of ore body ground conditions can be divided into four main steps: 1) The general and structural geology of the site must be determined; this is determined primarily during the economic evaluation. 2) The material behavior characteristics of the deposit and the vicinity must be determined. 3) The ground water hydrology of the deposit and the vicinity must be determined. 4) Miscellaneous ground support considerations must be established. Gross features are defined first, followed by a series of increasingly detailed investigations. Specifically, the geology study should start by utilizing techniques such as remote sensing, topographic map interpretation, geologic mapping, etc. After the gross features, such as major faults, have been delineated, the studies are directed toward defining the more detailed elements of jointing, rock strength, ground water hydrology, and other characteristics. This information is used to formulate an assessment of the strength of the ore body and the surrounding rock. Finally, all of the gathered information is integrated to make an assessment of the rock behavior in relation to the types of openings, the excavation methods, the support requirements, etc., that should be used for the rock conditions that are present. The mine design and the geotechnical assessment should be an iterative process. General conclusions about the rock conditions will dictate a type of mine plan. The specific mine plan then should be modified by specific geotechnical considerations. For example, an initial assessment may conclude that the ore body is strong and that a strong rock unit is present over the ore body. Thus, one definite possibility is to mine the deposit by room-and-pillar methods. However, subsequent investigations may reveal faults through the deposit, requiring relocation of the mine openings so that pillars and other structures are in sound rock. In other words, the final mine plan should be compatible with the geotechnical aspects of the ore body.

The image of the open-pit miner in the eyes or the Environmentalist has never been very outstanding. The phosphate industry, whose history in Florida reaches back to the late 1800's, can-not be credited until recently with a large number or accomplishments in terms of protection or the environment to change this image. This lack of action was not deliberate or in opposition with the desires of the public. In the formative years, there was little or no public and the companies found it necessary to build towns to house their employees and their families, towns which remained in existence until the late 50's and early 60's or formed the core of present large communities. Neither these pioneers nor most subsequent resource developers considered themselves un-thinking spoilers, nor were they so regarded by their contemporaries. Instead, they acted in a manner consistent with their environmental circumstances and intellectual heritage. Early Americans did make mistakes in using the land but the mistakes became apparent only in the opinion of later generations. Over the past five to ten years, there has been a new self-awareness in the industry with regard to environmental responsibilities brought about, in part by a continuing onslaught of new regulations with jurisdiction over our activities. Part of the new regulations are aimed at industries as a whole while many, particularly state regulations, pertain specifically to the phosphate mining industry. Why all the new regulations? The reasons are encased in a complex web of activity but stem primarily from a new public awareness of its environment. More and more of our youth have become interested in the environmental science areas such as biology and ecology. The tremendous growth rate in both the population and industry has made personal issues out of subjects such as atmospheric inversions and water shortages which previously were abstract concepts. The State has grown from a population of 1,500,000 in 1930 to approximately 9,000,000 people today. This personal impact and general lack of knowledge on the part of the public concerning economics has resulted in big business no longer being held in awe, often in contempt and generally in suspicion where environmental concerns are encountered.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) occurs in high sulfur coal and heavy metal mining environments. We show remediation methods using 3D numerical ground water flow models and chemical kinetics of pyrite oxidation for acid leaching of pyrite during air and ground water flow. A recently developed numerical model couples air and water flow with kinetics of iron-reactive bacteria, oxygen transport, specific chemical reaction rates, and pyrite oxidation to calculate migration control of pollution. A model is presented which considers diminution of acid mine drainage in pyrite rich ore bodies by raising the potentiometric surface through a vadose zone to reduce acid mine drainage. A ground water model is presented of an initially saturated mountain, containing an adit, with a sloping ground water table. Ground water recharge consists of snowfall and normal precipitation. Simulations indicate that the historically open adit creates a desaturated mountain above the adit. Significant air saturation ranging from 10-90% oxygen can occur to depths of the adit (-270 m). Remediation consists of plugging the adit, which fill s adit and mountain with water from recharge. Plugging the adit required <10 years for resaturation and rise of the water table in the mountain.

In 1990, Canada produced 69.4 million tonnes of coal of which some 65 million tonnes was produced by surface mining methods. The two Western Canadian provinces, Alberta and British Columbia produce approximately 55 million tonnes of coal by surface mining. These two provinces also provide the bulk of the metallurgical coal for export. The geological conditions in the Western provinces particularly in the mountain region are complex. The coals are friable and the seams are steeply inclined, sheared, intensely folded and faulted. There may be as many as 15 to 20 coal seams present with true thickness ranging from 2.5m to over 8m. Most of the Canadian surface mines are large (over one million tonnes per annum) using modern mining equipment such as shovels, high capacity trucks and draglines. At present the industry is going through another of its up and down cycles but has continued to make impressive gains in productivity. This has been achieved through greater mechanization, better management practices and a will to succeed in a highly competitive world market. This paper presents an insight into the current status of the Canadian Coal Industry and essentially updates the information given by the authors at previous SME meetings.
