In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? INTRODUCTION The decontamination of the former Shiprock uranium millsite and the interim stabilization of its tailings piles began in March 1974, and ended in June 1978. Personnel monitoring for whole body gamma ray exposure was conducted for selected individuals working at the mill site throughout most of this period. The millsite and exposure conditions are briefly described to develop a basis for interpretation of the exposure data. Millsite The Shiprock uranium millsite is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the millsite are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. About 1.5 million tons of tailings were produced on the millsite during its operation from 1954 to 1963. The tailings were pulped with waste process fluids and water, and discharged to form two tailings piles. The piles (ponds, dams) were formed with earth starter dikes and the dikes were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and tailings reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a tribal enterprise. In addition to its regular activities, NECA established an on-site training school for heavy equipment operators. The trainees principally used the south tailings pile as a practice area and spread the tailings into a 10 hectare row of raffinate ponds located along the southwest side of the millsite. Overall, the training activities inceased the effective area of the tailings piles from 20 to 35 hectares. Another 56 hectares were contaminated with wind and water eroded tailings. Exposure Conditions Persons decontaminating a millsite may be subject to radiation exposures from several sources. Only whole body gamma exposures are discussed in this report. These exposures are arbitrarily divided into three levels: high, intermediate, and low. The levels are related to areas in which the decontamination work was being done and have no connotation concerning imminent hazards. High exposures would result when persons were working with raw tailings, and intermediate exposures would occur when persons were working in the ore storage and mill yards. Low exposures would result from working in areas where surface contamination exists from wind and water erosion. [ ] The millsite and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas to facilitate the decontamination work (Figure 2). Within the framework of the adaptation of the South-East European Technicentre (Technicentre Sud-Est Européen TSEE), SNCF Voyageurs appointed Pini with the project management mission (MOE) for the design and construction monitoring of a road tunnel. This investment has a dual function: during the site transformation phase, it facilitates the work logistics (and shorten traffic flows); and in the operating phase, it is intended to ease all movements on the site over the long term. This is a limited-length gallery (50 meters) to be performed in conventional excavation below Poniatowski Avenue (Paris 12e). The excavation, crossing the entire width of the boulevard, constitutes a major challenge, given the very low coverage (less than 5.5 m), and the surrounding main infrastructures. The same project mis- sion includes the design of the tunnel accesses, via reinforced-concrete frame structures. The targeted design questions several aspects of its execution framework, and particularly, continuous operation must be guaranteed to the neighboring networks during the works. The installation of an umbrella- pipe all along the excavation profile, the progression in divided sub-sections, and the implementation of a complex monitoring system are hence key elements for limiting and controlling any deformation. An exhaustive 3D finite element modelling was performed, taking into account the detailed phasing of construction (pre-support, excavation in divided section, preliminary support and definitive lining), to dimen- sion the structures, and, overall, to analyze the impacts on the neighboring structures and facilities. During the execution phase (planned for mid-2024), monitoring activities with back-analyses as close as possible to the works are planned.

Nalco Chemical Company and a North Carolina Phosphate operation have formed a successful supplier/customer team effort that has resulted in major improvements in the operation of the clay thickening circuit at the Aurora, North Carolina concentrator. A Nalco OPTICUS® Automated Process Control System for thickener and flocculant control was installed in 1994. The paper will discuss in detail the development and refinement of the OPTICUS system over the past three years. The paper will survey the development and networking of process control for monitoring, controlling and operating four 325-foot Dorr-Oliver thickeners, three 80-foot high-rate Enviro-Clear thickeners and control links to the facility's clay/gypsum blending operation.

Wastewater treatment systems, both industrial and municipal, produce large quantities of sludge which require disposal. Sludge disposal poses significant environmental liabilities, logistical problems, and economic burdens. Minergy Corporation has developed and implemented several new technologies for the recycling of such high volume wastes as sludge, ash, and foundry sand. These technologies perform mineral recovery from the waste material, converting them into construction material and industrial feed stocks which are inert, marketable products. With a continuously operating processing system installed at the waste source, these technologies reduce handling, eliminate downstream liabilities, and reduce disposal costs.

Machine Situational Awareness (MSA) requires the ability to efficiently evaluate the probability of interaction of objects within the environment, without creating false alarms or ignoring materializing hazards. To do this, an MSA system needs to assign context to observed object activity and integrate as much information about object identity, kinematics, behavior, and current state as possible. This paper describes how known object characteristics, attributes, and activities (drilling, dumping, driving, etc.) can refine interaction probabilities and help identify rogue actors that introduce anomalous risks to the health and safety of miners. Path projections need to incorporate velocity and direction as a function of time while accounting for terrain, safety response, environmental factors, current assigned activity, etc. This paper also describes the methodology for properly prioritizing responses to place the highest value on human safety.

The struggle to get the minerals industry seriously interested in high intensity wet magnetic separation* has been difficult. The high capital cost of the equipment, the lack of basic research, the lack of operating information, and the diverse characteristics associated with different minerals and ores have prevented the development and use of HIMS-W on a wide scale. The Climax Molybdenum Company, a Division of American Metal Climax, Inc., located at Climax, Colorado, was among the first companies in the Americas in recent years to support the development of HIMS-W to recover weakly magnetic minerals on a large scale. The Climax Molybdenum Company, one of the world's largest underground mines, processes about 40,000 tons per day of ore, from which about fifty million pounds of molybdenum disulfide are produced each year. By-products include tungsten, iron pyrite, tin, and some monazite.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel project involves the construction of a bored tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel in Chesapeake Bay (VA), between two artificial islands and parallel to the existing tube tunnel, built in the sixties. It will be the first transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a 44-foot-diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) named "Chessie," manufactured by Herrenknecht, and which was assembled at the CBBT's southernmost island, with extremely limited room, live adjacent traffic, and difficult access. "Chessie" was successfully launched in February 2023 and this paper describes this complex and challenging process.

The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another increasingly common evaluation system for proposed projects is the environmental, social and health impact assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its generally more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluating potential impacts, such as on public health, and other features such as an ecosystem services approach to assessing biophysical and community impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. In this paper, EIA standards for the province of Alberta, Canada are discussed and compared to ESHIA. It concludes with several recommendations for consideration.

In longwall mining, ventilation is considered one of the more effective means for controlling gases and dust. In order to study longwall ventilation in a controlled environment, researchers built a unique physical model called the Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) in a laboratory at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) campus. LIAM is a 1:30 scale physical model geometrically designed to simulate a single longwall panel with a three-entry headgate and tailgate configuration, along with three back bleeder entries. It consists of a twopart heterogeneous gob that simulates a less compacted unconsolidated zone and more compacted consolidated zone. It has a footprint of 8.94 m (29 ft.) by 4.88 m (16 ft.), with a simulated face length of 220 m (720 ft.) in full scale. LIAM is built with critical details of the face, gob, and mining machinery. It is instrumented with pressure gauges, flow anemometers, temperature probes, a fan, and a data acquisition system. Scaling relationships are derived on the basis of Reynolds and Richardson numbers to preserve the physical and dynamic similitude. This paper discusses the findings from a study conducted in the LIAM to investigate the gob-face interaction, airflow patterns within the gob, and airflow dynamics on the face for varying roof caving characteristics. Results are discussed to show the impact of caving behind the shields on longwall ventilation.

Truck-shovel dispatch systems based on linear or nonlinear programming algorithms have been in operation since the mid-1980s, with different levels of success depending on the correct arrangement of operational resources and the complexity of the mine. These systems are known for shortcomings related to the logic behind the decision-making of the operational objectives. This makes it necessary to have a human agent (dispatcher) to guide the system when the operational parameters change, creating the possibility of suboptimal decisions due to the human factor. To address this issue, the present work discusses the implementation of a methodology based on artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to assist in the decision-making of the best optimization goals arrangement when operating a fleet management system. The focus of the analysis is on the evaluation of variable goal weights in a nonpreemptive, multigoal optimization model for multiple uncertain scenarios based on regions of optimal feasibility.

Numerous worthwhile benefits accrue to the industrial organization that is supported by a maintenance organization performing at a world class level. That organization will be favored with consistently reliable production equipment. It will be assured of meeting production goals. Its product will exceed marketplace standards. Its customers will see them as a quality organization. Its employees will enjoy job satisfaction and the plant will realize continuing profitability. Every industrial plant aspires to achieve ?world class? status knowing it can compete favorably with the best, most profitable organizations in the world. The trick is to achieve the attributes that qualify your organization for world class status. But there are no world class maintenance organizations. Rather, there are world class industrial organizations that include a world class maintenance organization. Maintenance, by itself, is a service provider, dependent on the support and cooperation of other departments. When that service is exceptional, it is made that way because maintenance is operating in a plant environment that requires it to be exceptional. Managers have created an environment in which maintenance can be exceptional. The plant, mine or facility manager must acknowledge from the start that maintenance is not a stand-alone effort of a plant maintenance department. It will require the joint efforts of all plant departments. Quality material support and full cooperation from operations, for example, are among the essential requisites for effective maintenance and achievement of world class maintenance status. When attributes such as these are reinforced by dedicated plant managers, profitability soon follows.

Substantial progress has been made over the last ten years in the development of uniform national and international standards covering the definition, estimation and public reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves. Agreement between the major participating countries has been reached, which include the requirement that a Competent Person prepares and approves publication of mineral resources and reserves. Most national regulatory organizations have accepted the new standards and have included them in the rules that must be followed by mining companies operating under their jurisdiction. These developments are the result of a concerted effort on the part of professional societies, national regulatory agencies, international organizations, and many dedicated individuals. The historical development of these standards is summarized in this paper. Accepted definitions of mineral resources and mineral reserves are discussed, as well as the definition and role of the Competent Person. Additional effort is needed before the international standards are fully understood, accepted and followed by mining companies, regulatory agencies, the investment community and the general public. Steps being taken toward development of a Mineral Reserves International Reporting Code Template (International Template) that will be available for all countries to use in deriving their specific country reporting codes, are outlined

In this study, FLAC3D modeling was conducted for ground-structure stability assessment for a pilot tunnel passing under a large shaft excavated in the vicinity of existing structures at Karangahape Station for the City Rail Link Project in Auckland, New Zealand. The analysis involved generation of the geometries and construction sequences in Rhinoceros®, modeling the existing ground condition, calibration of the simulated in situ conditions with the observed behavior of the ground, and excavation of the shaft and the pilot tunnel. A comprehensive interpretation of the results was then performed accompanied by comparison of the predicted behavior with the observed response of the ground during construction.

Technology to enhance safety during mine hoisting has been developed by researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Assessment of current hoisting technology suggests that monitoring conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety advantages. Wireless data transmission schemes and a package consisting of sensors, batteries, and a charger mounted on the wire rope and skip have been developed. A state-of-the-art automated hoisting test facility was constructed to test the concept in a controlled laboratory setting. Field tests in a full-size shaft are underway.

"This paper will share my ‘shift in career direction’ journey from corporate mine engineer, with 31 years of mining various commodities with a wide range of responsibilities in a variety of countries, to the world of academia. There are times in one’s career that a change is required, albeit perhaps not as drastic of a change as moving to teaching. This paper will share how the transition arose, the decision to make the change, the challenges of the first year in academia, and the journey within academia going into the second year. INTRODUCTION As a graduate of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology (Montana Tech) with a B.S. Mining Engineering degree in May of 1982, my first job with Utah International in the Farmington area took me back to my home state of New Mexico. Some of you will remember that the early 1980’s was not a period of prolific opportunities for mining engineers; given low commodity prices, especially for copper (for example, Anaconda Company had been taken over by Arco and was in the midst of closing down its Butte operations). Coal was good and the learning opportunities abounded with Utah (which became BHP and then BHP Billiton). Gold was taking off in the mid to late 1980’s thanks to use of cyanide and heap leaching technology improvements, coupled with deregulation of the gold price, so I ventured off to work in the gold industry with a (then) junior Canadian company called Barrick at a new acquisition of theirs known as Goldstrike. That same gold surge was causing a shortage of iron ore mining engineers in Australia so after a few years in Nevada, I uprooted the family and left for a little town in the Pilbara of West Australia, known as Newman, to work in the iron ore industry with BHP Iron Ore. An initial short overseas posting turned into six plus years before transferring to BHP’s Indonesian steam coal mines in Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. BHP was going through a rough period following some ill-fated projects (Magma copper purchase, Beanup and HBI) and was reviewing assets and staffing so internal opportunities became scarce. Employees were encouraged to ‘leave the company and find work elsewhere.’ So, off I go to Argentina to try copper mining in the Andes with Minera Alumbrera. This short stint in South America was followed by a move to another mining town, Morenci, Arizona, and a posting with Phelps Dodge (now Freeport McMoran). After 12+ years without living close to snow we moved to the Denver area in a new position with Newmont Mining Corporation. Along the way I became a Professional Engineer (Nevada) and completed a Masters in Project Engineering and Management. After 11 years with Newmont, I moved to Butte, Montana where I accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Mining Engineering."

It seems to be a matter of general understnading that title extraction or use of ground water may not be used as the basis of a depletion deduction under the United States Revenue Code And indeed, I have been unable to find any precedent upon which to base such a deduction. It is for this reason that the Shurbet case, which is the subject of my discussion and is now before the Court, may well become a precedent as authority for the allowance or disallowance of a depletion deduction for income purposes. It is well known that the law recognized that capital is consumed in the process of extracting minerals, oil and has, other natural deposits, and timber (underscoring supplied). This exhaustion, or depletion, is likened to the using up of raw materials in manufacturing. The law, therefore, provides a deduction for depletion which is intended as compensation for the exhaustion of assets consumed in the production of income through severance of minerals, oil and gas, other natural deposits, and timber.

Any effectuation of a viable program of air pollution control will' require a basic understanding of the chemistry of atmospheric processes, the fate and migration of SO2, and the ultimate health effects of the sulfur oxides themselves. The migration and ultimate fate of Sop discharged into the atmosphere will be discussed with particular emphasis on the various conflicting views and how these relate to our present emission control regulations. Our present lack of knowledge is a severe detriment, and consideration will be given to those particular areas where future research may best be directed to provide the answers to a number of perplexing questions.

Not only does mining call for processes that are complicated and energy intensive, but complex material movements and an intricate logistical chain add to the industry?s obstacles in achieving sustainability and performance. This article explores three major challenges and the resulting issues currently being faced in the industry, as well as potential solutions to these impediments by use of energy management, automation and control strategies.
