New Gold?s New Afton Mine, located 8 km (5 miles) west of Kamloops, British Columbia, is a 4.5-Mt/a (5-million stpy) block cave mine, making it the highest tonnage underground hard rock mine in Canada. The reserve is estimated at 52.5 Mt (55.9 million st) with grades of 0.65 g/t (0.02 oz/st) gold and 0.93 percent copper (2012). Commercial production was achieved in July 2012 and nameplate production was achieved ahead of schedule in September 2012, with the cave breaching to surface in 2013. The mill has a SAG and a ball mill with a froth flotation circuit.

"Linear circuit analysis (LCA) is a fundamental tool that may be used to evaluate, design and improve the performance of mineral separation. The traditional LCA methodology provides a comparative evaluation of circuit designs purely from the unit interconnections. The quantitative approach uses the analytical circuit solution to evaluate the slope of the circuit’s partition curve at the midpoint. Since the partition slope is often associated with a separation’s general selectivity, this numeric value is used to compare and rank alternative configurations. Unfortunately, the partition curve slope only reflects the separation potential of middling material. By itself, this value does not account for the relatively high unit dollar value of pure material or the gains and losses in mass yield associated with alternative circuit configurations. Realizing the value in the LCA methodology, but respecting the limitations of the partition slope valuation, the authors have derived two new performance indicators that quantitatively address pure particle misplacement (the Partition Moment of Inertia) and circuit mass yield (the Yield Score). Together, these parameters provide a better indication of separation economics in typical mineral and coal separation systems. Since the two parameters provide independent information on circuit selectivity and circuit yield, a Pareto efficiency, multi-objective function selection approach is proposed for preliminary circuit selection.IntroductionOver the past 30 years, numerous scientific and industrial studies have proposed various mineral processing circuit design methodologies that attempt to optimize the allocation of separation resources within the processing plant. Over this period, the methodologies have undergone various transitions, including the increased inclusion of process models and computationally intensive algorithms, as well as a general shift from a purely technical solution (Lauder and McKee, 1986) to partially economic solutions (Abu-Ali and Sabour, 2003; Cisternas et al., 2014). Today, circuit design is largely driven by flowsheet simulation; however, no consistent design methodology is used across the industry.One intriguing approach for circuit evaluation is linear circuit analysis (Meloy, 1983a). This method evaluates the separation potential of the circuit solely considering the unit configuration and stream interconnections. No preliminary data other than the basic circuit configuration is required to use the approach."

The Michigan Department of State Highways makes extensive use of geophysics for subsurface surveying which would be applicable for uses in other fields. Examples of resistivity surveys are given which include a proposed large volume excavation with suggestions for land use after excavation, subsurface evaluation for engineering design, and a subsurface survey for land appraisal. An example of a combined refraction seismic and resistivity survey is shown where the resistivity is used for outlining the unconsolidated soils, while the seismic method Is used to outline bedrock and to evaluate it for rippability. A refraction seismic survey at the bottom of bridge caissons for evaluation of bedrock uniformity and a relative aid In assessing rock strength is reported.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 1,250 m3/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 meters or more as far as 1,500 meters from the mine. No wells have yet become non-productive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures or ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand, silt, and clay. Hydraulic conductivities and storage coefficients are comparable with those of undisturbed confined aquifers. Water quality in mined lands is highly diverse because of diverse spoils lithologies and poorly-established ground-water circulation. Ground water in spoils is more mineralized than in the coal beds and chemically resembles waters from sandstone aquifers. Hydrologic effects of mining will not be catastrophic or widespread but may have local significance. Most notable changes will be in water quality; availability will not be permanently reduced.

Modern electronic devices and systems used to enhance miner safety and health are becoming commonplace in underground coal mines. The ability for these devices and systems to function properly in the presence of electromagnetic emissions from other electronic and electrical devices and systems is not entirely understood. To investigate potential electromagnetic compatibility issues of critical mine electronic devices and systems, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are conducting surveys of electromagnetic emissions in underground coal mines. This paper presents the measurement system, methods, and results of electric field electromagnetic emission surveys conducted in three underground coal mine environments in the frequency range of 10 kHz to 1000 MHz. The survey data show that in some environments electric field electromagnetic emissions in underground coal mines approached or slightly exceeded limits as defined by other industrial sectors.

The authors previously developed a methodology that combines injury and citation measures into an overall mine safety performance evaluation tool, called the safe performance index (SPI). It can be easily adopted by mine operators to monitor trends in their injury and citation experiences as a risk assessment method. In this paper, six normalized safety measures and the SPI are used to evaluate the health and safety risk that existed at mines in the two years preceding the occurrence of a fatality. The percentage of mines is given for which the risk was high or where trends of some of the safety measures indicated moderate risk. In 50% of the mines, this mine safety performance tracking method could have been helpful to the companies, state agency or the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in recognizing and addressing emerging problems with actions that may have been able to predict high-risk conditions, the fatality and/or other serious injuries. The approach would have given extra scrutiny to the risk for mines that encompassed 74% of the fatalities during 2007-2010.

Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Unfortunately, experience in modern times with substantial price fluctuations and even resource cartels dictates the wisdom of identifying and maintaining a national chromite reserve, irrespective of the cost. An improved exploration methodology is an essential element in this strategic objective. The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. The current National commitment to expanding the human presence into the solar system will clearly require major facilities in Earth orbit or possibly on the moon. Such facilities will need large amounts of materials for structural modules, life support, propulsion, and shielding. The heavy transportation costs in fuel required to lift materials from the Earth's surface make a terrestrial-based space system inherently inefficient. A more cost-effective approach would be to provide as much of the required materials as possible from other bodies in space not having the high cost of Earth launch. This paper identifies potential targets for space-based resource utilization, constraints on exploitation, and relative benefits of various sources.

Productivity achievements in underground coal mining over the past ten years highlight the improvement of management practices as well as the adoption of new technology. Research findings and results from operational studies characterize the aspects of good management that translate into high productivity. In concert with these findings, the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) is being developed, under co-sponsorship of the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia University Energy and Water Research Center, as a knowledge-based system to enhance more efficient management of underground coal mines. Concentrating on capturing the intricate knowledge needed to manage a mine effectively, MMSS will encompass information and rules on work scheduling, desired work practices, regulations impinging on operations and planning, responses to operating problems, and the labor-management work agreement.

To assist in the reduction of environmental degradation resulting from milling operations, the Bureau of Mines has developed, and successfully demonstrated, chemical, vegetative, and combined chemical-vegetative procedures for stabilizing milling wastes under varying environmental conditions. Costs of achieving reclamation using these stabilization procedures are compared with those of other physical and vegetative approaches. The Bureau's chemical-vegetative procedure for establishing vegetation directly on fine-sized wastes compares favorably with other stabilization processes that have been used.

The lean, but extensive iron ore deposits of the Dunderland Valley north of Mo i Rana, Norway, is the raw material for the Rana Mines which is a division of the state owned steel mill A/S Norsk Jernverk. Activities for the exploitation of the orebodies were commenced in 1902 by the English Dunderland Iron Ore Company. During its operating period the company constructed a total of two large scale concentrating plants. The activities were strongly marked by technical problems and labor disputes. Thus actual production was limited to the years 1904-1908, 1928-1931 and 1937-1939. During these periods a total of 1.9 million tons of crude ore was mined and 0.6 million tons of concentrates produced for export. The present plant commenced operations in late fall of 1964. Up to and including 1976 about 26.6 million tons of crude have been put through the concentrating plant and about 10.7 million tons of concentrate produced.

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. "In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. Using electrochemical techniques it was demonstrated that bioleaching of gold from refractory pyritic ores is a complex phenomenon. Many intermediate electrochemical reactions were found to be involved in the oxidation of pyrite, using cyclic voltammetry and carbon paste-pyrite containing electrode. Furthermore, the oxidation process was controlled by solid-state diffusion as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements. Using the Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion was found to be = 22.4 kJ. After bioleaching, 96% gold was extracted from the leach resi¬due with a thiourea solution in 1 hour. A generalized model for the mechanism of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

Appalachia is an increasing concern, as unnaturally high TDS and/or associated specific conductivity (SC) may contribute to deteriorated stream ecosystem health. The aim of this preliminary study was to explore the efficacy of accelerated leaching as a means of minimizing long-term TDS/SC generation by problematic overburden materials. Five spoil samples were collected and leached using simulated rainwater solutions under ambient and acidified pH conditions. SC and pH were monitored during each leach cycle, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was used to determine how leaching conditions affected the release of specific ions. This paper highlights the results of both jar and column leaching tests. Among the most significant findings was that for certain spoil materials, the SC in the leach column effluent was effectively reduced when the spoil was first leached with acidic rainwater followed by ambient rainwater, as opposed to leaching with ambient rainwater alone. This suggests that accelerated leaching might aid in the long-term stabilization of some materials.

Following the first longwall excavation at a deep-cover gas well site, the pre-mining modeling prediction of longwallinduced casing deformations in the fully cemented production casing were in excellent agreement with post-mining Caliper survey results. However, after second panel mining, the post-mining Caliper survey revealed a large plastic deformation near the top of the Pittsburgh Seam. The focus of this paper is to identify the possible cause of such an anomalous deformation. Very high longwall-induced casing stress near a thick claystone layer at 23 feet above the Pittsburgh seam horizon was identified as the primary cause. Leaving the production casing uncemented or using softer cementing material between intermediate and production casings is identified as the best practice.

Coal mined-out areas have a significant impact on mining safety and affect the pressure distributions of neighboring coal faces. The PFC3D software is used to study the goaf mechanical characteristics, and the core loading test verifies the rationality of the numerical simulation method. The results from the numerical modeling showed that the void ratio, particle size ratio, and particle size distribution of the rock particle sample (RPS) had a significantly remarkable influence on the compression deformation characteristics of the rock block. The parallel-bond tensile strength and parallel-bond cohesion had a notable impact on the compression deformation traits of the rock block only when the axial stress level was lower than 12 MPa. By contrast, when the axial stress exceeded 5 MPa, the effective modulus significantly influenced the compression deformation features. However, the stiffness ratio, loading rate, and parallel-bond friction angle had almost no effect on the compression deformation characteristics. Furthermore, when the stress level was less than 10 MPa, the stress–strain curves from the rock core samples’ numerical simulation and loading tests were approximately linear. In addition, the Pearson correlation coefficients of the stress–strain curves suggest that the goaf zone’s core numerical simulation results had a robust correlation with the loading test results. The findings of this study can serve as a reference for the field application of PFC3D software and safety assessments in goaves.
