"Mining is an important part of the economy of Namibia. In 2016, 11.1 percent of the GDP was the result of mining activities with 22 active mines (The Chamber of Mines of Namibia, 2016). Only one of them consists of an underground mining operation.The global annual production of fluorspar is approximately 5.4 to 6.3 Mt (6 to 7 million st) (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2017). Okorusu has produced on average about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey National Minerals Information Center, 2015).The Okorusu Mine is Namibia’s only fluorspar mine. Fluorspar was mined in an openpit mine with four individual pits (A-D) since 1980. In 2014, the mine closed due to the increased stripping ratio and beneficiation problems. The mine assets were bought by Gecko Namibia. Currently, Gecko uses parts of the processing plant for beneficiation of graphite from a neighboring mine. Figure 1 shows a panoramic view with the four pits and the mine village.The intent is to develop a concept for the further underground development of the mine. There are still about 6.3 Mt (7 million st) of measured resources left in the deposit, with an average grade of 27.5 percent CaF2. This study focuses on the underground mine design. The above-ground plant and facilities are considered as remaining unchanged.For solving the task to design the mine, a site visit for data collecting was conducted. Resource estimations were calculated based on existing drill data, and consequently, block models were created. The development of the mine design included the selection of the most suitable mining method, mining technology and mine organization. Moreover, some economic considerations are pointed out, followed by a profitability assessment."

The material's diffusion performance in cracks is tested using a self-designed system. Field tests in a coal mine demonstrate the material's effectiveness in improving borehole sealing compared to traditional materials.

In 1911, a young mining engineer named Bartlett Thane assembled a large claim block, 4 miles southeast of Juneau, Alaska. Across the Gastineau Channel on Douglas Island, the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company had, by 1904, produced gold valued at more than three times the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). Thane knew his deposit was lower grade than other mines or prospects in the area; however, if the deposit was developed on a large-scale, the trend and size of the deposit made the project potentially economic. In 1911, Thane developed a business plan for the project and successfully attracted investor interest. In 1912, Daniel C Jackling visited the property at the request of an east coast investment group. Upon inspection of 5 years of production records for the Perseverance Mine, Jackling saw an opportunity to apply the low-grade/high volume milling technology which was widely adopted to the copper porphyry deposits of the southwestern U.S. With a design capacity of 6,000 tons per day (5,454 tonnes/day), Jackling’s innovative mill design would require high volume underground mining methods and the power of two new hydroelectric projects. By 1915, the Alaska Gastineau Mining Company was in full production. Between 1915 and 1919, the mine and mill set production records for haulage and throughput. The hydroelectric projects proved to be successful engineering marvels. Operational difficulties related to ore grade, refractory elements and labor shortages interrupted production on an increasing basis. In 1921, the mining company permanently shut down operations. INTRODUCTION The Juneau Gold Belt begins at Windham Bay near the southern end of Stephens Passage and extends approximately 100 miles north to Berners Bay (Figure 1). The first large-scale and sustained underground mine, operated by the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Company in the late 1880’s, established the Juneau-Douglas area as the regional hub for transportation and development. In the mid-1890’s, the combined population of Juneau and Douglas reached approximately 3,000 residents, largely driven by employment and support demands of several small to mid-size underground gold mines in the region. By 1904, the value of the cumulative gold production of the Alaska Treadwell was five times greater than the purchase price of Alaska in 1867 (Kelly, 2010). By the turn of the 20th century, economic growth in the Juneau-Douglas area relied on supplies delivered from the lower 48. Passenger and freight shipping lines required 3 to 4 days to make the one-way trip from Seattle to Juneau. Established shipping routes required experienced crews due to navigation hazards and adverse weather conditions. Even with precautions at the time, steam ships and freighter vessels experienced breakdowns or encounters with natural hazards that resulted in damage or in some cases, sinking. Interestingly, with no roads or railroads connecting Juneau to other communities in southeast Alaska, Juneau still relies on seaborn shipping in the 21st century.

This chrysotile asbestos orebody is located near the northern tip of the Province of Quebec, Canada. It is some 1818 km (1130 mi) north of Montreal; 480 km (300 mi) north of the tree line and is situated within the zone of continuous permafrost. The open pit ore zone is approximately 0.4 km (1/4 mi) in length some 61 m (200 ft) in width and plunges at 25-30 below surface to a vertical depth of at least 610 m (2000 ft). The orebody was originally evaluated by programs of surface mapping, diamond drilling and bulk sampling. The fibre is semi-crude, possesses excellent strength, and good fibre length distribution.

This paper describes the implementation aspect of a blast hole kriging system which has been developed for the purpose of daily ore-waste control in an open pit mine. The primary goal of blast hole kriging is to improve the ore-waste delineation procedure. A complete computer program package called Blast Hole Kriging (BHK) System was developed for IBM/PC AT or XT computer, using Fortran language and supplemented by a few Assembly language routines for bit-map manipulation. The emphasis of this paper is on the implementation aspect of the developed system. For this reason, the requirements for practical implementation and the system design considerations are discussed in the paper, as well as the main features of the University of Arizona's BHK System.

The Cutoff grade optimization is very critical to the open pit production scheduling. In case of single mineral deposits, algorithms have been developed for determining cutoff grade policy that maximizes the net present value (NPV) of yearly cash flows. For deter-mining the cutoff grade policy for projects with two minerals including stockpiles the problem becomes much more complex. The purpose of this paper is to present fundamentals of a generalized cutoff grade optimization algorithm that will maximize the NPV of a project subject to mining, milling, and marketing constraints. Benefits of the methodology developed are demonstrated on three different case studies.

"BACKGROUND Strata mechanics of three underground coal mines in central Utah were recently studied using a specialized finite element technique [1, 2, 3, 4]. The purpose of these studies was to examine relationships between mining and related seismicity. The longwall mining method was predominant, but room and pillar mining and barrier pillar mining were also used in the mines studied. In every case, high correlation between face advance and seismicity was observed. The specialized finite element technique allows for whole mine subsidence estimation at a kilometer scale and for stress concentration at a meter scale near a working face. Comparisons of observed mine subsidence with model subsidence allows for model verification and justifies detailed analysis of the evolution of stress at seam level. Yielding is expected near a longwall panel face and as the face is advanced the extent of yielding is expected to increase. The total number of element failures in a finite element mine model also increases, so a high correlation with associated seismicity, say, event count, is not so surprising. A brief review of recent coal mine studies in Utah is presented in the sequel. The procedures are given in some detail in application to trona mining. COAL MINES The analysis procedure begins with the geologic column and proceeds to specification of strata properties including elastic moduli and strengths. Joints are an integral part of the geologic model and joint set specifications include dip direction, dip, spacing, stiffness and strength. Spatial variability of strata properties in situ may be taken into account during analysis. Topography is important, especially to Utah coal mines that are developed from outcrop in regions of high relief. Mesh generation follows specification of data input. Finite element analysis is next, followed by reporting of results. In this regard, all finite element computations are based on first principles. No model “calibration” is done that involves adjusting computer input to obtain a fit to mine measurements such as subsidence profiles. Figure 1 illustrates the concept of a dual node – dual mesh finite element concept. Dual nodes are roof and floor nodes in mined areas. These nodes replace the seam. The dual mesh is a much refined mesh with displacement boundary conditions obtained from the big mesh and thus replaces the effect of mining in the region outside the dual mesh. The refined dual mesh allows for details of stress, strain and displacement near a working face of interest. Strata Properties Strata properties include elastic moduli and strengths of intact rock between joints and joint stiffness and strength for each joint set present. Both properties sets may be obtained from laboratory test data, although testing joints poses a sampling problem in the field. The statistical variability observed in laboratory test data, say, in unconfined compressive strength tests is often characterized by much variation. In fact, the coefficient of variation, ratio of standard deviation to mean, is often greater than 35 percent. When sample values are mapped back to the mine location, one may observe spatial variability as properties vary from place to place as shown in Figure 2. Spatial variability may be incorporated into a finite element analysis with probabilistic assignment of properties to elements in accordance with measured variability. The result is a more realistic model of rock in situ."

The Sam Goosly or Equity silver deposit is fundamental- ly a discovery based on the analysis and interpretation of reconnaissance geochemical samples. The discovery was made by Kennco in an area of heavy forestation and wide- spread cover by thin glacial debris. No major mines had been discovered in the vicinity of the discovery prior to the geochemical reconnaissance, and the interpretation of the geochemical results therefore was based on data available through geologic mapping and the sample collection process. In the period 1959-1961, PE. Hirst and his crew, in 1962- 1965 P.T. Blackand his crew, and in 1966-1967 C.S. Ney and P.T. Black and their crew collected geochemical samples from the area of what is now the ore body. Several of these samples were compiled and reanalyzed in the winter of 1966- 1967 for various trace elements, including fluorine. A strong, almost 16-sq-km (10-sq-mile) fluorine anomaly was projected along with a very weak heavy metal anomaly. On the basis of this anomaly, a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz monzonite was discovered in 1967. This was a misleading, noneconomic discovery not associated with the Sam Goosly discovery. The interpretation of the geochemical data by Barakso that summer indicated that another source was responsible for the fluorine anomaly. The conclusion was based on the assemblage of trace elements. Therefore C.S. Ney recommended further regional soil sampling to check the original data. The early results of this follow-up sampling found over 33 ppm silver. First float, then ore outcrop was found in the area of the silver anomaly. The attached reprints complete the development of the property after the discovery of the outcrop of ore.

Vibrating screens and crushers are the workhorses of material sizing. Unfortunately their natural frequency is often in the range of typical supporting structures, thereby making installations prone to vibration problems. Much of the available literature regarding the support of vibrating screens is fairly confusing and outdated. This paper presents the results of utilizing accelerometers and finite element software in the analysis and design of supports for vibrating equipment. It contains data from field studies of vibrating screen and crusher installations, design of new and repair of existing supporting structures, and the correlation between field data and finite element time history analyses. Finally, the paper summarizes a method for analyzing and designing structures subjected to vibratory loads and predicting their behavior.

Linear circuit analysis (LCA) is a fundamental tool which has been used to evaluate mineral separation circuits during the preliminary design phase. Traditionally, the LCA methodology uses the analytic circuit solution to determine the relative slope of the circuit?s partition curve. This value is then used as an indicative performance measure suitable for the comparison and ranking of alternative circuit configurations. Unfortunately, the partition curve slope only reflects the separation potential of middling material. In most mineral systems, this material represents a small portion of the initial feed (due to liberation) as well as a small portion of the revenue potential (due to the incremental value). Respecting these limitations, the authors have developed new separation performance indicators which may be derived from the analytical circuit solution and used in LCA problems. These indicators inherently reflect the separation potential of pure material, providing a better indication of lost revenue due to misplaced material. The complete methodology has been integrated with prior software to produce the Heuristic Optimizer for Resource Separation Economics (HORSE).

This contribution presents the first multi-scale geophysical investigation conducted in the Abakaliki and Obubra mining districts (AOMD), southeastern Nigeria, for the exploration of shallowly emplaced (< 50 m) massive sulfide and barite mineral deposits. Raw airborne magnetic data covering the AOMD was acquired and subjected to diverse enhancement routines to facilitate the identification of areas of subtle magnetic anomalies for subsequent ground truthing. The mineralization is mainly made up of galena, sphalerite, and barite. The contrasting physical properties between these minerals and their host rocks make resistivity, induced polarization (IP), spontaneous potential (SP), and magnetic methods ideal to study and delineate the mineralization and possibly locate the ore bodies. Wenner DC resistivity and IP data acquired along the same parallel traverses are inverted using Res2dinv to produce 2D tomography models of resistivity and chargeability. The resistivity and IP models were successful in delineating zones of sulfide and barite mineralization. The ground SP data collected along the same traverses as the resistivity and IP data were interpreted as line graphs. The 1D SP models show a number of central negative anomalies that could be related to sulfide mineralization. These anomalies show fair-to-good spatial continuity and are in close agreement with the result obtained in the resistivity and chargeability model. This study suggests the presence of exploitable mineral deposits in the AOMD and demonstrates the superior interpretative ability of combined geophysical methods over a single geophysical approach.

The borate deposits of Death Valley, first exploited in 1882, were a major world source of boron-bearing products until shortly after very large deposits near Boron, California (Kramer) came on stream in 1926. Borate mining in Death Valley then became moribund, with most extant deposits held as reserves backing Kramer. Tenneco began borate operations following acquisition of claims in 1967 and is the only active borate producer inside Death Valley National Mon¬ument. Borate ores, confined to the lower Furnace Creek Formation (early to middle Pliocene), initially precipitated in a shallow lake fed by boron-rich volcanic hot springs associated with the Basin and Range province. Later diagenesis and remobilization plus regional folding, faulting, and erosion altered and complicated originally simple borate mineralogy and distribution. Dominant ore minerals are ulexite (NaCaB509.8H20), probertite (NaCaB509.5H20), and colemanite (Ca2B6011.5H20). Tenneco currently operates two open pits near Ryan, California. Mining is by bulldozer-pushed scrapers hauling waste and front-end loader/off-highway truck combinations for ore and waste haulage. Archeological, environmental, and aesthetic considerations influence both mine plans. Boraxo Pit, opened in 1970, has deep ore (stripping ratio 10 to 13:1) which occurs along a fault and as beds in shale on the hanging wall. Problems include pit wall instability (adverse bedding), non¬ripable calcareous shale (11,000 fps), and mixed ore separation. Sigma Pit, opened in 1975, has shallow (stripping ratio 1 to 1). low dipping, bedded ore in shale. Massive ulexite and "granular" un- cohesive colemanite present problems in mining and milling. Colemanite is crushed to -6 inches, washed, dried at 350°F, then calcined at 800°F with 100 tpd capacity. Crushed (-6 inch) ulexite or probertite is Raymond milled to customer specifications with a capacity of 1000 tpd.

General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda&apos;s property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda&apos;s (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13&apos;A x 20 ft). The health and safety of miners is critical in the industry. Prolonged exposure to dust-laden air results in irreversible ailments like pneumoconiosis that have a severe impact on their lives. Operations use various personal protective devices (PPEs) to alleviate their exposure to respirable dust. Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR) is one such device that uses high- efficiency filters and positive pressure masks to shield miners from airborne contaminants. Used in the medical and other industries, these respirators efficiently protected healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, the mining industry has shown a growing interest in adopting this PPE to ensure safe working conditions for the miners. We present an introduction to the PAPRs and discuss their dust capture efficacy in this manuscript.

Coal and coal combustion byproducts are potential candidates for alternative resources of REEs (rare earth elements). The Illinois Basin is a major coal-producing district in the USA, but little work is available on speciation of REEs in the basin’s coals. In this study, a total number of 382 samples from known locations in the Illinois Basin coal beds were acquired, analyzed for their REE contents, and investigated for any spatial trends or chemical correlations. This study includes Springfield, Herrin, and Baker coal beds—the most heavily mined coals in the basin. An average coal ash from the basin contains 320 ppm REE, with Baker being the highest (407 ppm on average). However, the distribution of REEs in the coal beds was laterally and vertically heterogeneous. A number of trends were found in the REE variations. The most important trend was the relationships of the REE concentrations and fractionations with the distance from the syndepositional sandstones. The total REE concentrations were higher in the proximity of the sandstones, likely due to the increased deposition of detrital material. This increase was the most significant in Springfield coal (90%) and least in Baker (6%). Those coal samples from the Springfield and Herrin coal beds distal from the syndepositional sandstones had a heavy to light REE ratio (H/L ratio) of 0.40 on average, whereas in proximal locations, the ratio was dropped to an average of 0.30. This trend was not significant in the Baker coal bed. In general, higher mineral matter in the coals was associated with higher REEs. In coal preparation plants, refuse rocks can have up to 360 ppmREE. However, the ashes of the cleanest coals had higher REE levels. Such ashes also have a higher ratio of heavy to light REEs. The highest REE concentrations were found in the claystones and the shales associated with the coal beds. Since the naturally occurring calcite, quartz, and pyrite samples were depleted in REEs, an association of REEs with the clay minerals can be suggested.

An aggregate resource study was done for southern Washoe County, Nevada, which contains the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area and a population of about 300,000. The study included an inventory of existing operations, projection of future demand, identification of potential aggregate resources based on geology, and determination of economic potential of these resources. Economic potential was determined by the integration of GIS layers that included aggregate potential, distance from market, distance from major and minor transportation arteries, and elevation. The investigation resulted in a determination that resources of high quality aggregate sufficient for future consumption are present in southern Washoe county; the limiting factor for future utilization is accessibility.

Since the Buffalo Creek incident in February, 1972, Federal and state environmental agencies have had the pressure on the coal industry in the Appalachian area to close the coal processing plant water circuits. In an attempt to comply with this requirement, Eastern .Associated Coal Corp. decided to install a vacuum disc filter system at its Kopperston plant to eliminate the tailings pond and reduce the amount of plant make-up water. It was recognized at the time that the plant static thickener tailings would be a very difficult slurry to dewater because of its unusually high clay content. The following is a case history of the Kopperston installation and the refinements Eastern has made in its vacuum disc filter operation to increase efficiency.

With vehicles frequently found in underground mines and tyres being a major fuel item, the risk of tyre fires will be severe underground. This study presents an in-depth analysis of tyre fires on mining vehicles to increase the knowledge of the risk, applying data from full-scale fire experiments and CFD simulations. It was found that the wheelhouse of the loader caused an increase in the flame tilt angle of approximately 10%, decreasing the flame impingement and heat flux downstream. The flame temperature of the drilling rig tyre was found to be approximately 7% higher than the loader tyre, increasing the risk of igniting adjacent fuel items. The construction of the wheelhouse/mudguard will contribute to a longer flame length by creating a fuel-rich environment. The CFD simulations predicted higher flame tilt angles for the drilling rig case for higher flow velocities, indicating the influence of a varying wheelhouse/mudguard construction and tyre geometry on the flame tilt angle. The construction of the loader resulted in a flow behaviour, where the short distance to the front mudguard/tyre and the separation of flow directly downstream of the protruding construction led to fire gases being steered past the front mudguard/tyre. In the drilling rig case, the longer distance to the front mudguard/tyre led to fire gases being directed towards the body of the vehicle after passing the area with flow separation. An increased knowledge of the tyre fire risk on mining vehicles and mitigating measures would improve the fire safety in underground mines.

A multi-layer gangue roof of a steeply dipping coal seam with a large mining height face area was analyzed using physical simulation, numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field measurement methods to evaluate the roof deformation and the mechanisms associated with the instability of the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer. The results indicated that the first weighting step of the multi-gangue roof was larger than that of a non-gangue roof, but periodic weighting steps were similar. The overburden collapse height was lower in the multi-gangue roof than in the non-gangue roof due to the buffering and supporting function of the collapsed gangue. Moreover, the failure of the coal interlayer was the key factor in the collapse of the multi-layer gangue. A mechanical model was established for the hard gangue and soft coal interlayer based on a revised Prandtl squeezing theory. The limited load of the interlayer and maximum resistance of the shield support was thusmodeled. The maximum resistance of the support increased with the dip angle of the seam and burial depth.
