Microtunneling is rarely a straight forward “business as usual” endeavor. More often than not, these projects take twists and turns that require on the fly, out of the box solutions to get the project completed. This paper is a case history of a 63-inch diameter, Permalok, microtunneling project, extending nearly 700 linear feet under a hill forming the left-hand abutment to an earth embankment tailings dam. The job had three major and unexpected challenges that required unorthodox solutions. Challenge #1— Face Configuration: The Santiago Formation, a cemented sand formation with widely varying strengths, presented a challenge to configuring the face with regards to the number and length of pics and cutters. Subtle differences in type and size of the tooling had a big impact on the performance of the machine. Challenge #2—Eccentric Loading: Issues at the launch shaft with the Permalok pipe adaptors caused eccentric loading on the casing pipe. This issue resulted in overstressing and breaking of several pipe joints that ultimately led to seizure of the tunnel. Challenge #3—Back-tunnel Excavation and MTBM Recovery: There were many detailed considerations into excavating a recovery tunnel to retrieve the MTBM, especially being under a high hazard earth embankment dam.

In most current practice, the methods that are employed in technical evaluations of cement raw materials are deterministic; i.e., decisions among alternative raw mixes and alternative plant designs are reached with the aid of only "average" compositions and "representative" samples of the available raw materials. Nevertheless, cement plants are sensitive to raw-material variability, and uniformly high-quality raw materials are not so abundant as they once were. Some simple examples will illustrate how geological techniques can be combined with geostatistical and operations-research approaches to customize mining and processing systems to deal with variable raw-material compositions.

Most mines using backfill routinely carry out quality control (QC) testing of backfill mixes with unconfined compression test cylinders. This is true for paste operations, hydraulic fill operations, and cemented rockfill operations worldwide. However, a large number of mines simply do not prepare and test the backfill samples in a consistent manner and fail to properly analyze or interpret the test results. Conventional concrete test criteria are not applicable given the differences in the mix constituents and the fact that a large number of the backfill QC test cylinders typically fail to achieve the target strength. Standard industry practices are needed to improve the analysis and interpretation of QC test results and to provide a better means of determining if the backfill is achieving its intended target strength. This paper will attempt to lay the groundwork for standard industry practices and will address several key questions raised by operators, such as how laboratory test data compares to in-stope performance, and how many QC tests should fail before a red flag should be raised. INTRODUCTION Although paste backfill is widely used throughout the mining industry, cemented rockfill (CRF) remains as the backfill of choice in places like Nevada where very poor ground conditions mandate the use of underhand mining. The safety and stability of undercut entries beneath backfill is a function of the quality of the cemented fill, which is typically assured through routine quality control testing. In the absence of a backfill quality standard, most mines rely on concrete standards to design and interpret their backfill quality control programs. In the USA, these standards are developed and published by organizations such as the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). However, the application of these standards to cemented backfills can be very difficult owing to the high degree of variability in backfill mixes and the resulting variability in test results. To illustrate, the concrete industry standards denote that an acceptable (passing) test result occurs when the average strength of the duplicate test cylinders exceeds the target strength and no single test result deviates from the target strength by more than 10% (ACI 214R). Remedial measures must be taken if three consecutive tests fail. With mine backfills, it is safe to say that these criteria are rarely achievable. A further, more dramatic example is the accepted coefficient of variation for concrete QC cylinders. According to ACI 214R, the coefficient of variation (CV) should range from below 3% (excellent rating) to above 6% (poor rating). However, if this analysis method is applied to several backfill QC databases from operating mines, coefficients of variation are calculated on the order of 50%. Clearly, there is a need to develop better industry practices for assessing the quality of mine backfill and to assist mine operators with the interpretation of test results and the development of action plans in the event of undesired outcomes.

"It has been more than 10 years since Montana Resources’ copper/molybdenum mine has had a lost-time injury at its site in Butte, MT. With more than 350 employees and an average production of about 15.5 Mt/a (17 million stpy), which includes 29.5 kt (65 million lbs) of copper and 4 kt (9 million lbs) of molybdenum, the mine’s journey to a decade of exemplary safety is an impressive feat that has required hard work, commitment and, most of all, leadership from every level of the operation.It has not always been an easy journey, nor has it been one without scrapes and bumps along the way, but it is one that has produced stellar results. Mike McGivern, vice president of human resources, and Pete Steilman, safety manager at the mine, spoke with Mining Engineering about how the operation transformed from a site that was accustomed to collecting citations for safety violations to one that is now collecting awards for its safety record.Simply put, Montana Resources has made safety a value and the people its top priority.The operations faced many predictable challenges in 2003, when the mine was being brought back online after three years of sitting in care-and-maintenance status. It had been shuttered in 2000 because of low commodity prices and high operating costs, and, in the three years that the mine was idled, the equipment became dilapidated, and some of it was no longer in compliance. Less than half of the workforce returned to the site for the restart, and the team was challenged with getting the gears turning again to produce copper and molybdenum. But the most daunting challenge of all of was keeping the workforce safe during the transition.In the first few years of operation the mine racked up citations from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) at an alarming pace, so much so that in May 2006, Montana Resources received a letter from the MSHA District Office informing the company that the operation was being placed on the Potential Pattern of Violations list due to its excessive citation history and high rate of significant and substantial citations. It was clear that something significant had to be done to change the course of action at the mine."

Mining is essentially a materials management process where materials are classified, excavated, moved to a desired location, processed at a cost and sold for a price hopefully to generate a profit. ?How much is that cost and can it be reduced?? is the age-old question. The requirement for a paradigm shift with regard to materials movement in search of low-cost production has not just happened by chance but, rather, has been driven by agents of change that include mining companies, consultants, governments and equipment suppliers. During the past 100 years of mining, surface mining technology has involved humans with hand tools, humans with machinery and unmanned automated equipment. In the past 50 years, surface mining technology has evolved and now takes the form of trucks and loaders (TL), in-pit-crushing conveying (IPCC) and autonomous haulage equipment (AHS).

Ten small and intermediate-sized [11 GJ/hr to 264 GJ/hr (10,000 lb/hr steam to 250,000 lb/hr steam)] coal-fired boilers in the upper Midwest have each been tested on both a bituminous eastern coal and a subbituminous western coal. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of substituting western subbituminous coal for eastern bituminous coal as a means of reducing the SO x emissions from this class of boiler and to demonstrate the feasibility of greatly expanded western coal utilization as a means of reducing the use of oil and gas. The scope of this study was such that the representative boiler types were tested on both eastern and western coal for a period of time sufficient to completely characterize their individual emission and operational characteristics.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arimco Mining Corporation's (CAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au?Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in the country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon a region previously unassociated with porphyry-style mineralization. Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.41 % copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37,000 hectare FTAA has identified a further sixteen potential porphyry-related deposits. A new mining law was passed in March 1995 but prior to that CAMC had the first Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) granted by the Philippine government allowing 100% foreign ownership of mining projects.

"TBMs have been used in mining in decades past, but their use has been limited and sporadic, due to both perceived and actual application difficulties. With new technology and mounting success stories, this is changing. For both coal and metals mining, deep ore bodies require long access tunnels, and an efficient and economical method of reaching those deposits. Today, mining engineers are considering TBMs as part of the overall mine development plan. Planned TBM mine drifts are not only longer, but have more complicated trajectories. Mine development TBMs will have to cope with varying geology, potential for high water inflows, steep gradients, and high temperatures. TBM systems are being planned to cope with such difficulties. TBM systems will be considered and increasingly deployed for mine development, even if commodity prices remain low. TBMs can satisfy the need for increased productivity, better life of mine infrastructure, and safety. Effective conveyor systems are essential to support TBM operation in many mining applications. Many mine development tunnels are slopes, driven down at the steepest practical gradient to reach the deep ore body. Conveyors are often the only safe and effective way to haul the TBM muck form such tunnels. This paper will review the historical use of TBMs in mining, and will discuss the 2015 status of TBMs and conveyor systems in mining, and the special requirements and adaptable features needed in order to make efficient TBMs a reality in mines worldwide.HISTORICAL USE OF TBMS IN MINING APPLICATIONS The first successful hard rock TBM was invented in 1954. The generation and transportation of the airborne dust are mainly governed by the velocity and the movement pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face. Generally speaking, the higher the air velocity, the more the airborne dust will be generated and the longer the period of the dust of certain size will be carried away from the source. In order to effectively prevent the production and the spread of the airborne dust, The airborne dust concentration distribution in the longwall face must be known in advance. Before the dust concentration distribution can he predicted theoretically with confidence, the air velocity distribution pattern of the ventilation air in the longwall face area must be determined first. However, the complicated, time-dependent and unpredictable mining conditions along and around the face area make the theoretical studies of the problem rather difficult. For instance, one of the factors commonly affecting the air velocity distribution at the longwall face is the air leakage, either into or from the gob area. The leakage quantity and the location of occurrence differ from mine to mine, face to face, and time to time. They depend not only on the compactness of the caved roof fragments in the gob, but also on the degree of obstructions in the working space and in the return entry. Another obstacle to the theoretical studies about the velocity distrbution is the complicated boundary conditions of the ventilated spnce which is very difficult to represent accurately in mathematical forms. In this paper, the air velocity distributions measured in four longwall faces are presented. A statistical model for each longwall face is also derived for prediction of air velocity distribution in the longwall face.

The state of the lithium mineral industry is closely linked to the performance of the glass and ceramic industries and to the overall economy. Demand for the glass/ceramic products in Europe, Asia and North America remained strong during 1999. This was due to a slight improvement in the economy during the latter half of the year. Consequently, demand for lithium minerals was firm, with a positive outlook. The major economic minerals for lithium are spodumene, petalite and lepidolite. The latter was once the primary mineral. But its importance hasdeclined since the 1960s. The lithium industry consists of two different segments: •The lithium minerals segment mines from hard-rock deposits and physically processes the material to high-grade concentrates. •The lithium chemicals and metal industry segment. The major feedstock for specialty lithium chemicals was previously high-grade spodumene ore converted to lithium carbonate. However, most lithium carbonate is now sourced from salars in North and South America.

Flooded-bed dust scrubbers installed on continuous miners use fibrous type multi-layered filters to capture dust from the airstream. Prolonged operations of the scrubber could lead to filter clogging due to dust accumulation. This results in reduced flow through the scrubber and elevated dust levels in the mine environment. This paper compares the performance of a conventional fibrous screen filter and a novel impingement type dust filter. The impingement filter is a self-cleaning system and was designed to have a resistance similar to the fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiencies for these filters were computed using iso-kinetic sampling and optical counting of coal dust particles in a clean unclogged state. The cleaning efficiency of the impingement filter also increased with an increase in particle size and was comparable with the conventional fibrous filter. The cleaning efficiency of the fibrous filter improved significantly with an increase in water flow. The non-clogging nature of the impingement filter and minimal maintenance requirement makes it an attractive alternative to the conventional fibrous type filter in mining applications. The research also proposes a term called ‘filter performance factor’ to compare the performance of different filters under similar operating conditions.

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

Disa Technologies Inc. provides innovative, sustainable solutions for mineral processing and remediation through its patented High-Pressure Slurry Ablation (HPSA) technology. HPSA processes solid feed material in slurry form, propelled by high pressure pumps through opposing nozzles that generate impinging jets within a collision housing. This process induces particle-to-particle collisions in a high energy zone, creating intergranular fractures along grain boundaries. In our batch scale and continuous operating testing, we have found that controlling key processing variables such as nozzle velocity, slurry solids percentage, and the number of passes can allow for controlled size reduction and maximum mineral liberation. Since 2018, Disa Technologies has demonstrated the versatility of HPSA by testing it on diverse materials, including phosphate, copper, uranium, vanadium, zinc, rare earth elements, lithium, nickel, mineral sands, gold tailings, and more. The intent of this paper is to present an overview of our test results describing in detail impacts on size reduction, recovery, and grade with a focus on HPSA's adaptability across ore types. Looking forward, it explores the potential to process materials such as DR-grade iron, clay, PGMs, bauxite, and various tailings. Additionally, it examines planned advancements in HPSA technology, including optimized nozzle spacing, higher capacity models, improved tonnage-to-footprint ratios, enhanced maintenance features, and expanded nozzle configurations.

An essential prerequisite to expanding the application of longwall mining techniques in the United States is the development of a better understanding of the mechanics of rock mass deformation near the mined seam, in the inter- burden and at the surface. The results of studies of this type will provide a basis for the development of empirical and/or numerical modeling techniques to predict the rock mass response to mining both near and far from the mined seam. This will lead to improved gate and panel design, resulting in maximum recovery, increased productivity, as well as provide a mechanism for assessing likely surface effects induced by long- wall mining. Presented here is the instrument plan to be used at Kitt Mine No. 1 in the study of rock mass response to two adjacent longwall panels.

In this study, a parametric study was conducted using FLAC3D numerical models to examine the impact of oblique loading, generated from seam dip, on the strength and the failure propagation pattern of a stone pillar using two simplified geometry types. In type 1, the sidewalls of the pillars were assumed to be perpendicular to the roof and the floor, while in type 2, the sidewalls of pillars were assumed to be vertical. The complex pillar geometry in dipping mines was frequently modeled using these two geometries. To capture a complete picture of the effect of seam dip on pillar stability, the modeled width-to-height (W/H) ratio of the pillars, in situ stress field, and pillars roof/floor interfaces were systematically varied to account for the potential distribution of values for these parameters across the underground stone mines in USA. Results from the numerical modeling indicate that dipping pillars have reduced strength compared with horizontal pillars. Also, an asymmetric failure propagation pattern could be obtained depending on an interaction between the W/H ratio, seam dip, in situ stresses, and pillar geometry.

This study level process design represents an economically viable method for extracting thorium dioxide and other rare earth elements from monazite ore. This paper incorporates results from the 2019 capstone project from the honors Design Internship in Green Engineering in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. In this activity, senior students in Chemical Engineering at the University of Tennessee (UT) focused on the development and study of a process for the recovery of thorium dioxide and P2O5 from monazite. While not mandated, the process offers rare earth oxides as attractive byproducts. The project focused on recovery of byproducts rather than the creation or addition to waste streams. Additionally, (1) the process economics relied heavily on recovery of rare earth byproducts, (2) thoriumhandling portions of the process could be effectively segregated from rare earth and phosphate handling portions of the process, and (3) thorium and uranium content of waste streams should be carefully managed and eliminated where possible.

This paper is aimed at helping the mining industry to better understand the challenges posed by electromagnetic interference (EMI) and to promote electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in underground coal mines. The paper begins with a review of EMI standards in other industries, then presents some representative examples of EMI instances that have occurred in the mining industry, followed by a literature review of published EMI research in mining and, finally, a discussion on mitigation strategies and practical considerations related to EMI in mining.

A limestone mine in Ohio has had roof instability problems that have led to massive roof falls extending to the surface. This paper describes a collaborative study of these events undertaken by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the mine owners. The study focuses on the roles that weak, moisture-sensitive floor and weak bands in pillars play in a general instability that led to roof falls at this mine. The NIOSH Stone Mine Pillar Design software (S-Pillar) does not include analysis for weak floor or weak bands and recommends that when such issues arise they should be investigated further using a more advanced analysis. It is important to recognize that without the impact of the floor or weak bands, the calculated inherent stability factor for these pillars is within the recommended design range. Therefore, to further investigate the observed instability occurring on a large scale at the Ohio mine, FLAC3D numerical models were employed to help determine the failure mechanism. Roof-to-floor convergence monitors were also installed in the areas predicted to have further instability. This case study will provide important information to limestone mine operators regarding the impact of weak floor causing the potential for roof collapse, pillar failure, and subsequent subsidence of the ground surface. This recent case demonstrates that weak floor can be a significant factor in pillar stability and should be assessed during the design stage of the mine.

Phase III of the Orme Street Combined Trunk Relief Sewer project connects two existing 2.13 m diameter combined sewers to a new 3.66 m diameter relief sewer at 7locations along a 970 m alignment in downtown Atlanta. The alignment was enveloped by adjacent structures and utilities. The project was constructed below the groundwater table through compressible residual soil, rock and mixed face using a myriad of construction techniques, including compressed air NATM and jet grouting. Numerous design and alignment changes and accommodations for existing utilities and conditions were made during construction. The authors believe this to be the ?rst NATM project in North America utilizing compressed air tunneling.
