From time to time since the initial installation of an experimental flotation section in 1940 (reference A), Permanente Cement Company has made efforts to beneficiate the low-grade limestone fraction which occurs in its deposit at Permanente, California, The encouraging results outlined in this paper are the result of Permanente's latest effort. This paper discusses the factors governing the selection of the flowsheet with particular reference to marketability of the sand tailing by-product. The process flow is outlined in detail, and operating statistics of the plant are presented. Finally, the problems encountered in the operation of Permanente's beneficiation plant are discussed as well as solutions sought and found.

"Surface subsidence caused by underground room-and-pillar mining operations and by solution mining operations have been studied separately but never in combination. In 2008, FMC Minerals began using solution mining at its Westvaco Mine as a secondary extraction method in an area that had been previously mined using the room-and-pillar mining method. Mining regulations require that subsidence associated with underground mining activities be monitored and measured annually. Using Salt_Subsid, a subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute, and ArcGIS, Esri's mapping platform, researchers at Montana Tech were able to develop a relationship between measured surface mine subsidence and solution mining that can be used at the Westvaco Mine to estimate the production of trona from solution mining operations. Project backgroundFMC Minerals has increased the production of trona from its Westvaco Mine near Green River, WY, using solution mining as a secondary extraction method in an area previously mined using the room-and-pillar method. The area of interest was mined until 2001 with the use of a borer miner at a depth of approximately 488 m (1,600 ft). Currently, FMC determines the amount of trona produced using its solution mining operations by measuring the dissolved solids pumped from the mine. This approach, however, does not account for the location from which the trona was removed.The location from which the trona is removed and the size of the cavern created by the solution mining operations are important to FMC’s mine planning. FMC believed that with proper investigation of the subsidence at the Westvaco test site, a correlation might be found between surface subsidence measurements and the amount and location of trona production from the solution mining activities. The primary goal of this project, conducted by Montana Tech, was to find relationships between the measured subsidence and the solution mining activities. The project attempted to develop an equation that could be used to predict solution trona production based on measured subsidence. The project attempted to model the relationship between the measured surface subsidence and solution mining production using Salt_Subsid, an existing subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI, Clarks Summit, PA) to estimate the location, size and shape of the solution mining cavern. This study would determine the program’s usefulness for locating and developing the cavern created by secondary solution mining activities. The subsidence and production data sets used in this study were collected over a seven-year period from 2008 through 2014."

The Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company is situated in the Klerks-dorp district of the Province of the Transvaal in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 100 miles west of Johannesburg. Gold production commenced in January 1957 and Uranium treatment of residue slimes as a by-product started in July 1957. The mining property is 5435 mining claims in extent, the equivalent of 7,988 acres or 12.5 square miles. The mine was initially exploited by the Pioneer Twin Shaft System, consisting of a 26 feet diameter down-cast shaft and a 22 feet diameter up-cast shaft, sunk in the north-west area of the mine to cater for the hoisting and ventilation requirements for a milling rate of 150,000 tons per month.

It is prudent to interpret atmospheric monitoring signals in real time for checking the safe limits of the air conditions in underground mines. In gassy mines, real-time evaluation increases the safety of operations. In all mines, continuous monitoring and evaluation contributes to maintaining air conditions within healthy and safe limits. Signal interpretation for safety conditions in mines is difficult for many reasons. An increase in hazardous contaminant concentrations can be predicted by signal pattern recognition, root cause analysis of rapid changes toward deterioration, and forward prediction in time using algorithms and numerical models. The paper describes an early warning system for analyzing monitored signal patterns continuously in real time as well as forward predicting the various environmental and working conditions to recognize dangerous trends that may affect safety and health in underground mines. A dynamic, numerical ventilation model with heat and gas contaminant simulation components is used for the analysis of atmospheric data. Methods and test results are discussed with numerical examples for signal propagation prediction. Several mine examples are studied using controlled, synthetic data for malfunction simulations to evaluate time delays between the detection time of suspicious signal trends and the time of dangerous threshold crossing marking an accident scenario. Delay time is found in the order of 20 min in the examples, signifying the useful time period for preventive intervention between EWS warning and the likely breakout of a following accident.

During Hurricane Harvey over 60% of the 39 WWTPs, including the low-lying 25 MGD Sims North WWTP, and one third of the 382 lift stations owned and operated by the City of Houston were flooded resulting in extensive facility damage, loss of service and uncontrolled release of untreated wastewater into bayous and creeks. In response, the City has embarked on an effort to improve system resiliency by consolidating at-risk facilities with a network of deep sewer tunnels. These tunnels will provide secondary benefits to the collection system of augmenting the capacity of the existing 6,000 miles of sewer mains and lowering the collection system profile in poor performing areas. Investigations on the cost to mitigate the flood damages by raising the liquid stream processes at the Sims North WWTP is estimated at nearly $450 million. Instead of spending $450 million to raise the plant, the funds will be directed to providing a more robust and resilient wastewater system for the Sims basin area of Houston. The backbone of this new system is a 4.5-mile-long, 110 inch diameter deep gravity sewer tunnel that will convert a system heavily reliant on distributed lift stations to a majority gravity system with a deep consolidated lift station at the Sims South WWTP. This will also allow the City to address the flood prone infrastructure at Sims North and consolidate its operations into a single permitted outfall for this collection system. This approach is the outcome of a team effort focused on maximizing system resiliency and sustainability for the next 100 years. By thinking outside the box, the City of Houston will not only mitigate the flooding risk at Sims North WWTP, but also solve regulatory and operational challenges throughout the sewershed and deliver a winwin on multiple levels.

A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. "Automated Mineralogy (AM) is an important diagnostic tool in flotation plants as it adds ore and particle mineralogical properties to traditional mass and chemical data. AM is used in project development, for future ore studies and for diagnosing concentrator operations. With the exception of operations who own central laboratory or on-site systems, the use of AM is often limited to the analysis of a comparatively small set of samples. Metrix Plant Technologies has partnered with TESCAN to integrate TIMA AM technology into the implementation of Performance Assessment Campaigns (PAC). Routine daily composite samples from the mill are analysed mineralogically on a size-by-size basis over several weeks. All the relevant metallurgical, process control and mineralogical data is combined into a single large database for mass balancing and interactive examination. This paper describes the implementation and results of a PAC at the Agnico Eagle Kittilä gold mine in Finland. Although challenging, the addition of mineralogical data as dependent variables in multivariate analysis leads to a much deeper understanding of the root cause effect of events driving the flotation performance. INTRODUCTION TO STUDY The Kittilä mine, owned by Agnico Eagle, is Europe’s largest primary gold mine, with annual production of approximately 180,000 Oz. The operation is located in Lapland in northern Finland, and is currently expected to operate until 2035. The location of the operation is shown in Figure 1. Historically, the mine was an open pit, although in recent years ore is sourced solely from underground operations. The processing plant features crushing and grinding, followed by carbon flotation and sulphide flotation. Carbon concentrate is a waste stream, and sulphide concentrate reports to pressure oxidation (autoclave) and CIL circuits for gold extraction. The final flowsheet is shown in Figure 2. Following commissioning in late 2008, the operation achieved commercial production on May 1st 2009. Gold recovery in flotation gradually increased to a 92-96% range at a throughput of ~3500-4000 tonnes per day. In late 2014, the operation commissioned a plant expansion to ~5000 tonnes per day. Following a commissioning period, the operation stabilised with recoveries in a 90-94% range, which over any given period was determined to be ~2% lower with statistical significance. The trends from start-up of gold recovery in flotation and throughput are shown as follows in Figure 3. In early 2016, Agnico Eagle Kittilä mine, along with Agnico Eagle Technical Services (AETS) partnered with Metrix Plant Technologies and TESCAN, to perform a Performance Assessment Campaign (PAC) at Kittilä, involving automated mineralogy on five key streams at Kittilä on 40 days selected from a 50 day period between February 15th and April 4th 2016, when plant operations were stable. In addition to the mineralogical data, metallurgical and operational data were pooled into a single, powerful database to explore opportunities for the operation to improve recovery in a sustained manner, ideally to the levels pre-expansion."

Hydrostatic trunnion bearings were recently provided on large Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mills driven by wraparound motors assembled on the head to shell flanges. A conventional SAG mill would have a ring gear driven through one or two pinions. The effects of the magnetic air gap forces from this new SAG mill drive arrangement on the performance of the bearing are discussed. A step-by-step systematic analytical de-sign of the hydrostatic trunnion bearing is presented, followed by a discussion of grinding mill erection requirements to conform with the design. A brief comparison with other bearing types and their response to the effects of magnetic air gap forces are also presented.

"This paper reports on the development of a simulation-based framework for obtaining optimal blast design parameters for a hard-rock mine. To do this, a conventional medium-sized hard-rock mine was taken as a case study. The mine has two pits containing hard and soft rock types. The proposed framework contains a combination of regression analysis using Excel software by Microsoft and discrete-event simulation using Arena software by Rockwell Automation, applied to construct a model of the material-handling network of the mine. Specifically, blasting parameters are estimated by Excel-based regression analysis, processes including blasting and haulage from pits to crushers are modeled by a Forward Blasting simulation submodel, and material-handling operations including crushing, storage in stockpile, and haulage via conveyors and into SAG and ball mills are modeled by a Crusher to Ball Mill simulation submodel. A Reverse Blasting submodel is then used to obtain the optimum blast design corresponding to a target P80 particle size. Using the proposed framework, an economic analysis was performed to demonstrate the cost savings that could be realized for each rock type as a function of specific explosive energy. IntroductionIn a modern hard-rock mine, various processes such as drilling, blasting, crushing, grinding and mineral liberation are optimized to increase productivity, a practice known as mine-to-mill (MTM) optimization. Blasting is important in MTM optimization as it is the first comminution process and has an impact on all downstream processes (Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, 1996; Nielsen and Lownds, 1997; Nielsen and Malvik, 1999; Chung and Katsabanis, 2000; Kim and Kemeny, 2011a; Kim and Kemeny, 2011b).Two main research topics have emerged in the area of blasting design: (1) identifying the optimal target blast fragmentation at each shot and (2) controlling the blast fragmentation for that target. As part of an MTM optimization study, Kim and Kemeny (2011a; 2011b) developed a site-specific blast fragmentation prediction model that can be used to identify the target blast fragmentation and can be incorporated into MTM optimization. They also reported methodology for assigning model parameters easily and with minimal human bias."

"Great effort has been expended for more than 40 years to improve the workplace safety and health of surface and underground miners across the United States. When looking at the past decade, withstanding the 2010, Upper Big Branch (UBB) disaster that took the lives of 29 miners, this effort has resulted in a generally decreasing trend from 57 fatalities (22 coal; 35 metal/non-metal) in 2005, to 45 (16 coal; 29 m/ nm) in 2014. Through August of this year, there have been 23 mining-related deaths (eight coal; 15 m/nm). These results reflect continued diligence and perseverance on the part of miners that stay true to our legacy; and demonstrate significant investments from mine-site leadership, mining corporations, and state and federal regulators. However, over the past five years there have been an average of 32 fatalities per year, with a low of 36 (2011 and 2012) to a high of 45 (2014). If we know that there will be somewhere between 30 and 50 mining related deaths next year, which of us will volunteer to be counted as one of the numbered? Clearly, we all agree that one fatality is too many; and as evidenced by changes following UBB, deaths in any sector are deaths reflective of all mining across all sectors.The impact of each miner death touches us all. Miner’s deaths are felt deeply by family and friends, most significantly the children; their communities in which they served, supported, and worshiped; and by society that has lost a hardworking, dependable contributor. Further, to take a slightly cynical, but realistic view, miner fatality events impact the financial vitality of mining and contracting companies and broadly diminish investor confidence. Just as important, these events significantly impact our communities and result in negative public perceptions, which ultimately drive regulatory policy and related compliance pressures. This resulting pressure forces operations to broadly address safety and health gaps in very specific ways (i.e., see U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations regarding lids for trash cans) minimizing a mine site’s opportunities for operational flexibility. To break this cycle that is the operational reality, mining companies are focusing tremendous efforts on fatality prevention and specifically on dedicated investment to prevent multiple fatality events."

The intent of geomorphic landform design is to mimic the function of the natural landscape. In a surface mine reclamation application, geomorphic landform design has the potential to mitigate stream loss. This research quantified features of reference landforms and performed computer modeling of a conceptual valley-fill design using geomorphic landform principles. A design was created using published design parameters with a software design tool (Carlson Natural Regrade with GeoFluv). Three additional designs, incorporating field-obtained regional geomorphic landform parameters, were completed and resulted in a geomorphic landform design specific to southern West Virginia. This work illustrates the importance of field determination of the ridge to head-of-channel input and drainage density parameters. Values of ridge to head-of-channel distance measured in this study were consistently an order of magnitude greater than software recommended values (SRV); SRV = 24 m (80 ft) versus field= 220 m (720 ft). Similarly, for the drainage density parameter, the software recommended range is 6 to 9 km-1 (80-120 ft/ac). The field measurements for central Appalachia quantified the drainage density to range from 5 to 5.3 km-1 (67-70 ft/ac). This affects Appalachian valley-fill stream construction by making the stream lengths shorter and the land slopes steeper with straighter headwater channels compared with areas in the southwestern United States. While the application of geomorphic landform design to surface mine sites presents challenges, this work provides support for future applications.

The paper provides an overview of dramatic developments in geotechnical instrumentation, and its applications in the U.S. and around the world for enhancing the understanding of ground response to mining-induced changes in stress, resulting in improvements in ground control technologies.

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

A nickel-copper sulphide concentrate was treated in a pilot plant at Warren Spring Laboratory during 1961, by a hydrometallurgical roast-leach- solvent extraction process devised to cleanly separate the metal values, and produce acid sulphate liquors containing the metals. It is shown that 86 percent of the nickel and 95 percent of the copper could be leached from the calcine, after a sulphatizing roast on finely ground flotation concentrate. Iron was removed from the leach liquor by limestone neutralization with a small loss of values. Copper and nickel were separated by solvent extraction with naphthenic acid in kerosene after partial neutralization of the iron-free liquors with ammonium hydroxide. Hydrogen sulphide and chlorine were used to remove zinc (and residual copper) and cobalt impurities respectively. The recovery of pure copper and pure nickel, by electrowinning, from the acidic solvent extract strip liquors finally produced, appears technically feasible.

"The development of a mining project necessarily progresses through many steps, beginning with the identification of a mineral resource and continuing through project construction. Several classifications of engineering study development are described, including preliminary economic assessment (PEA) or scoping studies, prefeasibility studies (PFS), feasibility studies (FS) and regulatory codes, each with a specific project organizational objective. This paper addresses the PEA, PFS and FS types of reports that are used by companies to evaluate projects, meet regulatory requirements and seek financing. The minimum requirements for engineering studies, focusing on the needs of financial institutions considering investment in a project, are outlined. IntroductionThe financing of mining projects in recent years has come under increased scrutiny by financial institutions owing primarily to an increasing percentage of projects whose capital expenditures had overrun project budgets or had failed to produce the economic returns anticipated during the project development process. Often, unfavorable project outcomes are not the result of widespread failures of the project engineering process but arise from inadequate engineering in limited specific areas of the project scope, such as overestimated mineral reserve, inadequate mine design, insufficient metallurgical testing or underestimated capital costs. Mill facilities and process infrastructure typically are responsible for up to 80 percent of the capital expenditures required by greenfield mining projects. They are often the project areas where capital costs are inadequately developed, and consequently are the areas highly scrutinized by financial institutions. This paper offers a perspective on the level of engineering expected by financial institutions as a prerequisite to committing support to developing mining projects.The evaluation of a mining project from exploration through development and production is a lengthy and complicated process. Mine development commitment activities for a potential project are initiated when a mineral resource is identified and continue through to the start of construction. The technical feasibility and the economic viability of each project are determined during the phases of mine development with more detailed engineering data required at each stage. Debate continues over whether barricading in refuge chambers is a good strategy to survive entrapment emergencies in underground coal mines, in particular fires and explosions. Unlike U.S. coal mines, Australian coal mines are not required to use refuge chambers and, instead, have adopted a strategy that focuses on instructing and training miners to self-escape to the surface. This paper analyzes the merits and problems of using refuge chambers or self-escape to the surface to manage emergencies in fires or explosions in an underground coal mine. We found that using refuge chambers may not be the best strategy during extensive fires or when multiple explosions occur. In these situations, mine rescuers are unlikely to be able to extract miners who are sheltered in chambers and, conversely, self-escape may save more lives than sheltering. Chances for successful self-escape are further improved by regular, externally assessed training such as the level 1 emergency exercises required in Queensland, Australia. These exercises put pressure on mine operators to ensure and maintain the effectiveness of their emergency management system.

Longwall mine instrumentation for measuring abutment stress distribution, mining induced immediate roof stress change and deformation, and primary/secondary support loads and deformations provides critical guidance for the design of gateroad chain pillars and roof support. Field measurement results are also recognized as the best way to calibrate numerical models that have been used to study the failure and support mechanisms. International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) started in 1981 and since then, there were 26 papers published in the proceedings discussing the stress and load measurements as the face advanced using various field instrumentation techniques. The focus of this paper is on summarizing the analyses of the data published in these papers. Stress/load change monitoring included the following categories: gateroad chain pillar, abutment pressure, bolt load, and pre-driven recovery room. The data shows that the magnitude of stress changes as the face advances varies considerably from panel to panel and mine to mine. However, regardless of types of stress changes, pillar stress, abutment pressure, and bolt load, there exists a rough trend of stress increase as the face advances, generally consisting of three stages, i.e., stress/load (1) initially increases steady or slowly, (2) increases rapidly, and (3) increases reaching the peaks and dropping down slowly or sharply. The stress/load increases start earlier during the second panel mining and are larger than the first panel mining. This review makes it easy for the interested persons to find valuable data for other similar projects.

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

Background ground water quality is often used to drive remediation programs at sites with waters affected by mining activities. In the past these levels were sometimes chosen without rigorous statistical and geochemical analysis. A probability distribution approach was used at the Sweetwater Uranium Project to separate a large set of geochemical data into populations that represent contributions from different sources. Natural background populations were identified for major ions, metals, and radionuclides, and were submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to modify the extent of a Corrective Action Program and to establish control limits for future monitoring.
