Introduction Uranium was recovered from mining of collapse breccia pipe deposits in the Arizona Strip district in northwestern Arizona (Figure 1) intermittently between 1956 and 1990, with cumulative production having totaled 23.3 million pounds of U3O8 (8960 tU) at an average grade of 0.6% U3O8. Production was suspended in 1990 because of low uranium prices, but the recent resurgence in market price once again makes the breccia pipe deposits potentially attractive exploration and development targets. This paper describes: (1) formation of the pipe structures and their metallogenesis; (2) mining and milling of breccia ore; and (3) potential roadblocks to development of new breccia pipe mines. Breccia Pipe Formation Formation of the breccia pipes began in cave systems formed during development of karst topography in the Mississippian Redwall Limestone. The karst Redwall surface was eventually covered by up to 900 meters of shallow marine to continental sediments ranging in age from Pennsylvanian to Triassic. The pipes were formed by progressive upward stoping caused by groundwater ascending under hydraulic head along near-vertical faults, joints and fractures. The stoping process involved both chemical disaggregation and mechanical failure of roof and wall rock. Upward stoping of successively younger units allowed for upward propagation of a pipe and resulted in a chimney-like column of breccia between the steep walls of the pipe. Syndepositional thickening of sedimentary units of varying ages indicates that pipe formation began as early as early Pennsylvanian time and continued intermittently through Triassic time.

Hindered-bed separators are recognized as low-cost, high-capacity devices for both classification and density separation; however, since their inception, there have been few significant advances in the fundamental technology. Recently, Eriez has shown through modeling and pilot-scale testing that the innovative approach to feed presentation offered in the CrossFlow teeter-bed separator provides improved metallurgy when compared to traditional hindered-bed classifiers or single-stage coal spirals. This design feature prevents excess water from entering the separation chamber and disrupting the overall fluidization flow rate within the teeter zone. Most recently, a side-by-side industrial scale evaluation has verified that this technology improves overall efficiency and simultaneously reduces the separation cut-point. With regards to coal processing, data from full-scale units indicate that the CrossFlow offers good separation efficiency, high unit capacity, and metallurgical results consistent with laboratory- and pilot-scale separators.

During the last twenty years computers have be-come widely used to assist with the simulation and design of large scale, primary ventilation systems. However, to date there are few computer programs available to help with the modeling of auxiliary ventilation in dead-end headings or tunnels. This paper presents the results of the first year of a research and programming study dedicated to the development of a user-friendly duct simulation tool. Included is a literature review that summarises publications on duct leakage and resistance, on previous programs developed for the simulation of airflow in ducts, and case studies on extended ductlines in mines and tunnels. The methodology behind the development of Ductsim, a Windows based simulation program is presented.

With ever rising energy costs, it is increasingly important for mines to operate with energy efficiency. As a large portion of a mine?s energy consumption is often attributed to the operation of mine ventilation fans, maintaining an efficient ventilation system is a critical pro-active way for mining companies to reduce power costs. A common way to measure a mine?s ventilation system efficiency is to calculate the volumetric efficiency, which is simply a calculation of the percentage of total mine air that is usefully employed for production. The purpose of this study is to document a nationwide comparison of the volumetric efficiency of U.S. underground coal mining operations. The results will aim to show just how efficient today?s coal mine ventilation systems are and what factors may be causing their various efficiencies and inefficiencies.

One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is the modelling of liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which of these exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13-km (8-mile) overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is a conventional three-roller, 35 degree trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design resulted in a 5.4-m/sec (17.7-ft/sec) belt speed, 1,000 mm- (40 in.-) belt width to convey 1.35 kt/h (1,490 stph) and 7 Mt/a (7.7 million stpy) of coal. Despite a high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 m/sec (21 ft/sec) in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput in-crease. In 2002, a new low loss ST2100 1,100 mm- (43 in.-) wide belt replaced the ST2250 that was due to be changed-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to increase the OLC capacity to 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy). Upgrading the OLC by increasing the belt speed was the lowest capital option. Increasing belt width and/or modifying the trough angle to have larger cross sectional area was not an economical option because it would require expensive changes and significant down time of the OLC. To achieve 30 Mt/a (33 million stpy), the belt speed had to be increased to 8.5 m/sec (28 ft/sec). Although such high belt speed looked feasible, there was no information at that time of other OLC operating at such high speed. There was a risk that the conveyor would not operate safely and reliably at higher speeds. This risk was escalated by the fact there was no facility to lower or fine-tune the belt speed once the higher belt speed was implemented.

The perlite industry in the United States continued to undergo rapid change and increased competition last year as it did in 2002. U.S. production in 2004 was 510 kt (562,000 st),an increase following five consecutive years of decline (Table 1). Perlite is exported to Canada and to the Pacific Rim. These partially offset imports. Perlite imports from Greece to the eastern and Gulf Coasts of the United States declined by about 22 percent after reaching a record 240 kt (264,000 st) in 2003.But their market remains protected by high rail rates from western U.S. plants. Minor imports of perlite persist by Termolita from Mexico.

Precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels have traditionally been designed with conventional steel bar reinforcement. In many cases, this has been satisfactory in service, but in others, major problems have occurred with the durability of the linings. Commonly this has resulted from corrosion of the reinforcement, mainly from chloridesin ground water, causing spalling of the concrete and leading to very expensive and disruptive repair programs. This paper discusses the relative merits of designing tunnel linings with steel fiber reinforcement to provide long-term durability, improved impact resistance and toughness for greater load capacity across joints, enhanced robustness during transportation and erection, plus improved fire resistance with the addition of polypropylene fibers. Guidance is also given in the selection of the correct fiber type, mix design and testing methods to establish the optimum dosage required and production techniques to ensure even distribution and compaction.

Discussion by E. Arioglu Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence [(ASmax)] induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/1- p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. 1 (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goat may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between [ASmax/m vs. h/1-p]. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data. It may be noted here that Wardell's approach (1969) can be successfully utilized for longwall panels having chain pillars. An ilmenite concentrate was reduced in the solid state with carbon under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1000oC and 1400oC. The ilmenite concentrate and 50% excess carbon were reacted to achieve the highest attainable degree of reduction at each temperature and the reaction products were subjected to a series of analytical work by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM ( EDS) analysis. The ilmenite remained unaltered at 1000oC and had a slight change in its composition at 1050oC. A secondary oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was detectable at 12% reduction at 1100oC. The reduction of TixOy took place in a sequence changing the y/x ratio from 2.0 to a value less than 1.0 at 84% reduction at 1400oC. Metallic phase consisted of Fe and C initially and started to include Ti at the later stages. Complete reduction of TixOy to metallic Ti was not possible at these temperatures.

Drilling data from the Valley Leach Facility at AngloGold Ashanti's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine has been used to develop a robust inventory estimation technique. The technique is presented along with discussion of the particular inventory components and evaluation methodologies.

Twenty-three companies mined kaolin in nine States in 2004. Production was estimated to be 7.6 Mt (8.3 million st) valued at $912 million, based on preliminary data. This was a slight decrease from 7.68 Mt (8.46 million st) valued at $939 million in 2003.Georgia was the leading producer state with an estimated 6.5 Mt (7.1 million st) in production. It was followed, in decreasing order of tonnage, by South Carolina, Alabama, California, Texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina. Georgia accounted for nearly the entire domestic water-washed, delaminated, and pigment-grade calcined kaolin production. Consumption Sales to the paper industry accounted for 49 percent of domestic sales and 64 percent of total sales. Other major markets for domestic sales were refractory products (10 percent), paint (5 percent), fiberglass (4 percent), catalysts (3 percent) and rubber (2 percent).Paper coating and filler markets accounted for about 87percent of export sales of kaolin.

In-situ leaching (ISL) operations have been proposed to recover uranium from sandstone-uranium deposits in NM. ISL (also known as in-situ recovery, solution mining, solution-leach mining, leach mining) consists of injecting a leaching solution into the mineralized zone through injection wells. The leach solution migrates through the formation, dissolves uranium and is recovered through production wells. The uranium is then precipitated through a conventional uranium recovery system. Several criteria must be met in order for in-situ leaching to be successful, most important is that the ore body must be amenable to chemical leaching. A number of ISL operations have been conducted in NM in the past (Mobil, Crownpoint; UNC-Teton, Section 23; Grace Nuclear, Hook?s Ranch, Seboyeta, Church Rock; Anaconda, Windwhip). Kerr-McGee (later Quivera Mining Co., Rio Algum) successfully produced uranium from mine-water recovery (recirculated mine water) from the Ambrosia Lake mines (mid-1960s to 2002). Despite some difficulties, ISL is a viable alternative to recovering uranium and could be utilized in the Grants district with proper aquifer characterization and monitoring.

INTRODUCTION In recent years several cities in the Eastern United States have constructed subway systems in deeply weathered igneous and metamorphic rocks. Portions of these transit tunnels and shafts have penetrated zones of saprolite. The purpose of this paper is to define saprolite and discuss saprolite behavior in terms of construction and design of tunnels and shafts. Saprolites are products of in situ weathering of rock, with properties intermediate between those of soil and rock. A well-developed weathering profile can be divided into zones of residual soil, saprolite, transition zone materials, weathered rock, and fresh rock. Saprolites are distinguished by a high degree of weathering and by retention of parent rock textures and discontinuities. These structures persist as relict features because of iso-volumetric weathering (Cleaves, 1974) and formation of intergranular bonds that give cohesion to the saprolitic material. As saprolite continues to weather, the bonds are broken, causing the saprolite to decompose and disintegrate into a true residual soil mass without relict structure. Saprolites may form from igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rocks, but are most easily recognized when derived from igneous and metamorphic rocks because of their inherent structures. The physical characteristics and properties of residual material vary as a function of mineralogic composition, structure, and discontinuities of its parent rock.

Due to deposit shape and dimension, narrow vein makes reserve modeling, geological control, stope design, drill and blasting more challenging. It needs high standard quality control as errors can be created easily, which could cause significant amount of ore loss or dilution. From channel sampling, survey control, reserve modeling, drill hole design, blasting, communication with underground drillers to backfill, this paper illustrated every step and its quality control of a long hole stope mining. Compared to other narrow vein mining methods (cut and fill and shrinkage), long hole stoping means higher production, less labor, and significantly lower cost when deposit characteristics allowed.

Ion exchange (IX) has been in use for a long time, references to IX are made in The Bible, Exodus Chapter 15 vs. 22-25 ?and the waters were made sweet?.1, 2 Aristotle noted a reduction in the salt content of water when passed through certain types of sand, a phenomena probably associated with ion exchange characteristics of zeolites. Ion exchangers can be naturally occurring or synthetic; the majority of ion exchange materials in use today are synthetic resins based upon organic polymers such as polystyrene or methacrylate. Into more modern times the use of ion exchange for metal recovery was first proposed for the recovery of gold using zeolites in 1909.4 In 1939 copper was being recovered from the manufacturing of Rayon using ion exchange5 a development that continued applicability through to current times in the production/recovery of copper and nickel in ammoniacal leach processes. In early 1949 researchers at the Rohm & Haas Company discovered that hexavalent uranium existed as an ionic complex in sulfuric acid leach liquors, and that quaternary ammonium anion exchange resins exhibited a high selectivity for this ionic species6 The first commercial application of this technology went on-stream in October 1952 at the West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd operation in South Africa. 7 Ion Exchange has been applied for the recovery and purification of a range of metals;8 ? The establishment and survival of different grass species and cultivars on various phytotechnic treatments at a limestone quarry was studied. The treatments applied were: a) bare soil, b) bentonite, c) bentonite-straw and d) asphalt-straw. According to the results, significant differences were found among species and cultivars, growing on different treatments as far as plant growth and survival are concerned. The seed germination was higher on bentonite -straw and asphaltic-straw than on bentonite but the plants survival were higher on bentonite. Lolium perenne had higher seed germination rate and better establishment than the other tested species at all treatments. However, the survival rate of Agropyron desertorum and of the cultivars palestina and chrysopigi of Dactylis glomerata was higher than of the other species.

An appropriate scale-up methodology is very useful for ball mill design and optimization of the grinding circuit. To date, the scale-up is based on the selection and breakage function model using lab mill data. However, a major drawback of that approach is that the charge motion in a lab mill is vastly different from that in a large industrial mill. Therefore, in the methodology proposed here, first the energy of individual collision in the mill is computed employing the discrete element method (DEM). Then the breakage of particles as a function of collision energy is studied in a separate experiment. Together, this information constitutes what is known as collision energy based population balance model. The appropriateness of this model is shown for different batch grinding mills.

Three sulfide minerals, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite, were leached using a bioleaching mode and an electrobioleaching mode. The former mode was used to leach the minerals with the bacterium A. ferrooxidans in a bioreactor. In the latter mode, the leaching of the minerals was performed in a combination of a bioreactor and an electrochemical cell. In this set-up, the solution was circulated between the bioreactor and the cathode compartment, the two reactors were in series, and the cell was operated intermittently. The mechanism is such that an increase in Fe(II) concentration, which is a nutrient of the bacteria, by electrochemical reduction of Fe(III) would increase the bacterial population and in turn would accelerate the leaching of the mineral. It has been found that the electrobioleaching of chalcopyrite is an improvement over the bioleaching with respect to the fact that leaching conversion is higher and a high level of Fe(II) concentration can be maintained. However, the electrobioleaching of sphalerite does not show any improvement over bioleaching. The electrobioleaching of pyrite is similar to that of chalcopyrite, and this has potential to be used in applications such as coal desulfurization and pretreatment of refractory gold ore in heap leaching where fine gold particles are entrapped inside pyrite particles.
