Gypsum wallboard manufacturers in the United States shipped 3.18 billion m2 (34.2 billion sq ft) of wall-board products during 2004 versus 2.93 billion m2 (31.5billion sq ft) in 2003. Following a historic high production of gypsum wallboard products in 1999, production decreased in 2000. But it has steadily increased during2001 through 2004. Wallboard production in the United States increased about 8.6 percent in 2004 from 2003. Following several years of a “building boom” of new wallboard plants and the expansion of the manufacturing capacity of several existing plants, 2004 was a relatively quiet year. However, several new plants and capacity expansions were announced or are in progress during 2004.

Graphite is elemental carbon that crystallizes in the hexagonal system as six-sided platelets. It occurs naturally and is mined. And it can be made artificially from petroleum coke in the form of shapes (electrodes) and powders. The market for most kinds of graphite in most end-uses was good in 2004. The 2005 graphite market looks positive. The major graphite prices, as given in Industrial Minerals, remained unchanged throughout the year. The preliminary 2004 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) prices for natural graphite showed almost no change for crystalline flake. They were $600/t ($544/st) in 2004 and$622/t ($564/st) in 2003. Mexican amorphous graphite was almost unchanged at $150/t ($136/st) in 2004 from$152/t ($138/st) in 2003.

Life-of-mine process simulation is an interdisciplinary effort and a useful means of thoroughly evaluating mining and minerals projects. Communication between geologists, mine planners, miners, metallurgists, and managers not only benefits each discipline but facilitates design of an efficient operation and allows for accurate forecasting of productions and cash flow. By focusing on the key areas: geology; mine design; waste dumps; stockpiles; metallurgy; weather data; tailings disposal; using contours, block models, mine plans, process flowsheets, design criteria, operating and control strategies, maintenance schedules, and operating costs to perform detailed daily simulation from start-up to shut-down; a comprehensive understanding for all disciplines is achieved. Construction of a METSIM model that includes all test work and project data from drill holes through net present value calculations brings the pieces together to achieve optimum process design, minimize operating problems and eliminate the term ?black box? from project meetings and discussions.

The mining industry continues to underpin the regional economy. Australia, benefiting from a weak currency, receives 27% of the total goods export value from non-energy mining lead by aluminium, iron ore, gold and nickel. Consolidation has eliminated CRA, Comalco, North, Savage, Acacia, Ashton, Great Central, Aberfoyle, Placer Pacific, Plutonic, Normandy and RGC leaving Rio Tinto, BHP-Billiton, WMC, MIM and, increasingly, the South African companies Anglo, Gold Fields and Harmony as dominant players. Exploration stagnates with expenditure dropping 40% in Australia and 80% in PNG from peak levels. Major new regional developments include Rio’s West Angles iron ore project, Newcrest’s Ridgeway gold-copper mine and Inco’s Goro nickel-cobalt project in New Caledonia.

Gentlemen; Rainy day in Upper Michigan, a good time to catch up on reading. Am doing that, and have a couple of questions concerning the K and P paper on roof problems and supports. I wonder if the authors can enlighten me. The compressive strength of the coal was reported as 4.4 MPa (633 psi) and compressive stresses measured in the coal seam were reported at around 27.6 and 48.2 MPa (4000 and 7000 psi ). Can such a soft coal actually contain such a high level of stress? Can it be measured as if the material were elastic, or does the coal behave plastically? Can that stress level be confirmed with hydraulic load cells? And if the coal is so soft, and if it is plastic, why is the stress field not hydrostatic? The intact roofrock appears to be unusually strong, with compressive strength reported at around 145 MPa (21,000 psi), and some failures were noted as soon as the rock was exposed. A model of a new laboratory magnetic separator has been conceived to cater the needs of process engineers and mineralogists world over engaged in mineral characterization and beneficiation. It would be essentially a laboratory instrument for the separation and concentration of various ferro and non-magnetic minerals. Based on the basic concept of Frantz Isodynamic Magnetic Separator, the new separator conceived would not only speed up the work of a process mineralogist and save the energy, but it would effectively separate and sequentially produce about fourteen fractions at a time. In the present paper, the probable operational procedures and the design have been discussed in detail for the various mining companies to assess its economic feasibility. If it could be fabricated, it would have a worldwide market The concept has been patented in author?s name in India.

Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. DP - diameter of boom point sheaves. d - rope diameter x - mean value of the measured parameter. s - standard deviation of x B/d - average bending ratio of ropes B/d =(D+ DP)/2d n - operational safety factor of the rope (rope stength) x (number of ropes) n(bucket load + bucket weight)] In terms of D/d ratio, the working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are similar to that in other related industrial applications. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. Indigenous people are nearly always affected when projects enter their territory. Crop and other asset compensation can help or undermine a project’s progress depending on the approach. When compensation is handled poorly, a technically viable project can get indefinitely entangled by local unrest. Stake holders associated with compensation issues include; the state, the indigenous people, non-governmental organizations, and the developer. Appreciation for the unique perspective of indigenous peoples and the influences affecting them can avert problems and prevent delays. A review of the compensation issues encountered in Ghana during its recent gold boom can assist in avoiding problems associated with handling poor and uneducated people.

Recovery of industrially useful metals from various secondary sources is an important issue in Korea whose natural resources are limited and needs in the strategic metals are on the rise. In order to meet such needs, researchers at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources have launched a number of projects to help the nation to recover various metals from secondary sources. In this study, silver is successfully recovered from spent silver-oxide batteries first by distillation to remove mercury. The distilled residue was next subjected to leaching of silver using nitric acid. The study involves finding optimum conditions to leach silver from the distilled residue and subsequently to recover silver from the leach liquor by chemical precipitation. The chemically precipitated products are then subjected to reduction roasting to recover silver metal.

Wet desulfurization of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal and Illinois No. 6 coal were conducted with sodium hypochlorite in the laboratory. Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was leached by hypochlorite at high pHs in one step only. The hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.6 molar; sodium hydroxide concentration, from 0.2 to 0.8 molar; and temperature was at the levels of 80 and 90°C. The desulfurization of Illinois No. 6 coal was conducted in three consecutive steps of pretreatment in concentrated ammonia at room temperature, leaching with hypochlorite at room temperature and hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution at 90°C. In the leaching step, hypochlorite concentration varied from 0.2 to 0.8 molar. The desulfurization method of Pittsburgh No. 8 coal was found to reduce mainly pyritic sulfur. More than 70% of pyritic sulfur removal was achieved at the optimum conditions of 0.4 molar hypochlorite, 0.4 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The desulfurization method for Illinois No. 6 coal was capable of reducing significant amounts of organic sulfur. The removal of organic sulfur achieved a 37.8% reduction at the optimum operation of leaching at 0.4 molar hypochlorite and room temperature followed by hydrolysis at 0.3 molar sodium hydroxide and 90°C. The chlorine content in the coal produced by the chlorination during leaching was kept below the threshold value of 0.3% at the optimum conditions of the desulfurization method for each coal.

This article discusses the evolution of U.S. laws and policies towards environmental remediation at mine lands over the last 20years, the opportunities that these changes present for reuse, and the remaining challenges associated with community capacity for effective reuse planning and implementation. Emerging initiatives by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Interior for addressing these challenges are discussed.

Effective tools are not only essential for the design of practical and efficient underground mine ventilation systems but must also play an integral part in the operation of the mine. One such tool is VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software. VUMA-coal is Windows-based and has been specially designed for the simulation of underground coal mines and includes user-friendly coal specific interfaces and three-dimensional graphics designed to facilitate in the construction and analysis of networks. VUMA-coal can be utilised during the design phase of new collieries, be used to conduct ?what-if? and optimisation studies, and be integrated into the ?day-to-day? ventilation related operations. In addition, VUMA-coal can be used to simulate dust and gas distribution in a ventilation network, as well as predict the impact of control measures. This paper describes the interactive VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software and its underlying design features and outlines a case study of how VUMA-coal has been integrated into Anglo Coal?s Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Engineering [VOHE] department as part of the standard planning and evaluation process in their operational mines as well as long term planning and future mining operations.

The ability to accurately model the movement of grade boundaries during a typical bench blast would be of significant benefit to mine operators. The movement of grade boundaries during the blasting process may have significant impact on grade recovery if not accounted for. The paper describes the preliminary stages of a research project which combines numerical blast models and conventional mine planning software to allow practical use of the results of a numerical blast simulation. A two dimensional bench blast is simulated using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). The results of the simulation are used to provide input to the Surpac mine planning package which can be used to generate grade control plans.

The rheological properties of mineral suspensions affect the design and operation of transport, mixing, size classification, grinding, gravity concentration, flotation and de-watering systems. In many cases, the rheological properties can be modified to improve processing through the addition of chemical additives. These additives may be either organic or inorganic and generally affect the state of particle aggregation or dispersion. Inorganic modifiers act primarily by affecting the surface charge of mineral particles and thus control the magnitude of electrostatic attraction/repulsion between particles. The action of organic additives (polymers and surfactants) is a combination of electrostatic and steric forces – the latter being related to the molecular weight of these reagents. While low molecular weight polymers are dispersants (viscosity reducers), high molecular weight polymers are likely to induce flocculation and increase yield stress.

Currently, mineral producers are suffering through a major downturn in prices for their products, even though it has only been a few years since they were enjoying high prices. From an historical perspective, the current situation is another of the cyclical down-turns that often reoccur every 5 to 7 years or so. This paper uses time trend decomposition techniques to identify the cycles and statistical methods to find the duration of these cycles for a variety of mineral prices. Given some idea of how long and severe these cycles typically are, the mining industry can better plan to weather the downturns and take advantage of the upturns. For example, timing investments in new projects to take advantage of the cyclical upturns can dramatically improve project profitability.

INTRODUCTION The first Dispute Review Board (DRB) was utilized on a tunnel project 20 years ago. Increasingly utilized on a wide range of construction projects, DRB's are becoming the norm on tunnel and underground projects. This paper summarizes the growth in this usage, uses observations and experience to establish that barriers to the utilization of DRB's are more perceived than real and that many arguments against the DRB concept are not valid, and notes some of the salient elements that should be considered in practice to optimize DRB effectiveness. The purpose of the paper is to provide an annotated checklist for current and prospective users. The basic concept, structure, and operation of DRB's are described elsewhere and will not be repeated here (ASCE, 1991). DISPUTE REVIEW BOARD USAGE A compilation of Dispute Review Board usage for tunnel and underground projects to January 1994 indicated use on 63 contracts with a cumulative construction value of $3.8 billion and a total of 60 disputes settled. As of that same date, DRB's were planned for another 63 contracts with an estimated construction value of $4.7 billion. (A listing of these 126 projects is available from the authors.) This success and popularity have spread to other civil projects as well as process and building construction. The increase in DRB usage has been exponential. See Figure 1.

Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable that affected the structural characteristics of the calcine which, in turn, affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature was closely monitored since October 2000. Original design temperature was 550oC. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500oC resulted in gold recovery increase by more than 6 percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an “intelligent” process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures thus achieving high gold recoveries between 92 and 93 percent. Under those conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease of gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g. porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

The paper summarises the results of a recent study of minerals planning policies of the Member States of the EU. The study has shown that contrary to the public opinion the production of industrial minerals and construction minerals is significant the former accounting for about 20 percent of global production, the latter amounting to about 3 billion tonnes per annum. In contrast the importance of metal ores has diminished although metal production in some European countries can still be significant. The study revealed that very few Member States have clearly defined mineral policies. Common to most mineral policies is the emphasis on reducing minerals consumption and recycling whereas the important aspect protecting access to minerals resources is not adequately addressed by most policies. Access to mineral deposits is regulated in most Member States by land use legislation and administration. Information on mineral deposits in land use planning data bases tends to be scarce. This together with the absence of formal mineral policies places minerals at a disadvantage in land use decision making. The emergence in the recent past of environmental legislation and in particular environmental impact assessments has had a crucial effect on the duration of the authorization process for new mineral projects. Examples are given how minerals planning is handled in some of the Member States.

Naturally occurring asbestos in aggregate and other mineral deposits, and the release of asbestos fibers into the ambient environment, is a public health concern. Determining the presence of asbestos in an ore body also presents a considerable sampling and analytical challenge. Improper and inaccurate identification of asbestos can result in unwarranted public and worker panic leading to significant costs to mine operators both in terms of dollars and company image. Some companies have been forced out of business simply because they had the non-asbestiform, prismatic variety of one of the six asbestos minerals. In the late 70’s, asbestos was found as a contaminate in a trap rock quarry in Rockville, Maryland. This discovery led to a massive overreaction by federal, state and local governments. In 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) promulgated a final rule that regulated the common non-asbestiform mineral habits of actinolite, tremolite, and anthophyllite as if they were asbestos. The rule was reversed after a six-year struggle. Recently, the Libby, Montana, W. R. Grace vermiculite - asbestos, as well as the California chrysotile in serpentinite, and the New Jersey Southdown quarry – asbestos events have rekindled the entire issue of naturally occurring asbestos. It is time to get this concern addressed with sound science so that real asbestos is properly identified and controlled.

Globalization was the key word for the mining industry during the 1990s, just as productivity was the key word of the 1980s. And globalization will remain the key word as the industry enters the 21st century, according to speakers at the Colorado MPD Meeting held in Colorado Springs, CO in May. The meeting, put on by the Colorado Section SME Minerals Processing Division, drew about 120 people to the Broadmoor Hotel. “Operating Globally” was the theme of the 49th annual conference. Speakers addressed the reasons why mining companies have limited their spending in the United States and have moved into Third World and developing nations.
