Research was conducted to study the characteristics of longwall mining machine noises and to develop engineering controls for the reduction of noise exposure at longwall faces. Time-motion noise dosimeter data was analyzed and compared with existing databases. Experiments were conducted above ground on a stage loader/crusher to explore the potential of using active noise control (noise cancellation) in reducing the noise levels. A 5-7 dBA reduction in recorded stage loader noise was achieved. This paper presents the equipment, procedure and results of the noise surveys, as well as the active noise control experiments.

This geometallurgical study examines the gangue mineral variability at the Bingham Canyon porphyry copper mine in Utah. Understanding an orebody?s mineralogy is important for mine and mill planning because it provides information on the size, texture, and distribution of ore minerals, the relationship between ore and gangue minerals, and the extent and type of alteration. Quantification of the mineralogical variability and properties of an orebody provides valuable input to the ore model and may have a significant effect on recovery optimization. This study was designed to be carried out on an initially detailed scale in order to develop a robust methodology for measuring and quantifying specific parameters, such as the distribution of mineral phases, alteration assemblages and fractures from key ore domains at the Bingham Canyon mine (Figure 1). Details of the methodology are reported below. This technique can be applied to testing the impact of mineralogy on a number of processing parameters. [ ] Figure 1. The samples for this study were collected from the northwest part of the deposit circled on the map. PROJECT BACKGROUND Geology The Bingham Canyon deposit is a large porphyry Cu-Mo-Au deposit with associated skarn and base-metal replacement deposits mined in an open-pit mine measuring about 2.5 miles across and 4,000 feet deep. The deposit is hosted by the Bingham Stock, a Late Eocene to Mid-Oligocene intrusive complex. The skarn is hosted by the Late Carboniferous-age Bingham Mine Formation, which is comprised of quartzites and basal limestones (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). The Bingham Stock is a composite intrusive complex that was emplaced over a period of about two million years. The oldest phase is described as a fine-grained equigranular monzonite (MZ), which intruded the country rocks at 39.8 ± 0.4 Ma (U-Pb zircon TIMS age) (Parry et al., 2001). Subsequently, the quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP) was emplaced, followed by intrusion of a latite porphyry (LP). The final intrusive phase, which forms narrow dikes that crosscut the Bingham Stock, is represented by a quartz latite porphyry (QLP), which is dated to 37.5 ± 0.4 Ma by 40Ar/39Ar dating of sanidine (Deino and Keith, 1998). Also present, are a minette dike in contact with a QLP dike (Waite et al., 1998; Deino and Keith, 1998), and a biotite porphyry (BP), a quartz latite porphyry breccia (QLPbx), and a pebble dike (Redmond, 2002). The copper orebody is centered above the Bingham Stock and forms an inverted cup shape with three high-grade copper zones extending to depth. Molybdenite mineralization occurs within and extends below the copper orebody, but is not correlated with copper mineralization. The main sulfide assemblage is chalcopyrite, bornite, molybdenite, and pyrite. Gold is locally intergrown with chalcopyrite and bornite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998; Phillips et al., 1998). The surrounding country rocks host skarn deposits with three main ore types - garnet skarns, massive sulfides, and iron oxides. The garnet skarns contain chalcopyrite and pyrite with magnetite veins. In the massive sulfides chalcopyrite and pyrite occur either in banded sulfides or in unconsolidated microbreccias. The iron oxides contain disseminated chalcopyrite with minor chalcocite and bornite (Harrison and Reid, 1998). The deposit is overprinted by several stages of alteration. Potassic alteration is concentrated at the center of the deposit. It is surrounded and partially overlapped by a propylitic alteration zone. Both zones are overprinted by sericitic alteration. In the northern part of the deposit evidence for argillic alteration can be found (Bowman et al., 1987). Similarly, the skarn deposit was also overprinted by several stages of alteration: wollastonite, idocrase, and garnet in cherty limestones, and quartz and diopside forming in calcareous quartzites. Distally, diopside was replaced by talc, tremolite, dolomite, secondary calcite, and pyrite, and quartz and sulfide veinlets with biotite and actinolite selvages are present. Andradite garnet, diopside, quartz, magnetite, hematite, and copper sulfides were overprinted by wollastonite (Babcock Jr. et al., 1998). Because the monzonite, quartz monzonite porphyry, latite porphyry, and quartz latite porphyry host the bulk of the mineralization, our research is focused on these lithologic units. Geometallurgy On the basis of geological (lithology, alteration assemblages, fracture density, copper mineralization) and metallurgical properties, the deposit has been divided into 33 ore domains by mine geologists and metallurgists (Figure 1). In map view, these domains cross geologically defined boundaries (MZ, QMP etc.). These domains reflect regions of the deposit that have particular, mapable attributes or properties. They reflect a combination of geological and mineralogical characteristics that combine to impact processing. Alteration, for example, as shown by talc mineralization, is one such key feature. The world’s largest manufacturer of mining and construction equipment said the addition of an AC electric drive truck line will provide its customers with products to fit key applications. “We are very proud of the strong leadership position that Caterpillar has attained with its mechanical drive trucks, and we will continue to invest in strengthening that position,” said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar’s Global Mining Division and Caterpillar Inc. vice president. “We also recognize that there are unique applications that would make the addition of ac electric drive an important and attractive complement to our current truck line.” This is the largest investment Caterpillar has made in mining trucks in its history.

INTRODUCTION As illustrated in Figure 1, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) rapid transit system (METRO) ultimately will comprise 100 miles of line divided among 10 routes. At this time about 46 per cent of the system is under construction or in operation. Planning and design of an additional 38 per cent is at an advanced stage. Of the 84 miles under development or construction, about 10.4 miles consist of soft ground tunnels, and another 1600 feet of mixed face. This paper describes most of the factors considered by designers in setting grades for such tunnels. It is hoped the paper will be a useful guide to planners and engineers in developing similar transit systems. The problems faced in Washington, including those related to geology, are not so unique that the solutions cannot be applied to other systems. The paper also may be of interest to contractors who have not perceived the logic behind the selection of a particular vertical alignment. An attempt is made to explain the background constraints that make most tunnel alignments a compromise among competing alternatives. Readers might assume that the choice of alignments is largely controlled by geological conditions. In fact this is merely one of many factors to be considered.

Design and construction of temporary shafts for underground facilities often require evaluation of bottom stability due to rupture (blow-ins) caused by water pressure acting on a bottom plug. This paper provides an overview of shaft bottom stability evaluation methods for the case of a relatively watertight soil plug which overlies an artesian aquifer. Methods of considering plug perimeter shear, plug buckling and pressure relief are discussed. Minimum factors of safety are suggested. Future use of the shaft subgrade is also considered. Bottom plug failure case histories at several shafts are evaluated. This paper should be useful to project designers, ground support system design engineers and contractors involved with construction of shafts for underground facilities

Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Loaders and dump trucks are the most commonly used surface-mining equipment. Negligence of the safety-engineering aspects of dump trucks may result in serious accidents in a mine. A reduction in the risk of an accident due to the deployment of trucks can he achieved by engineering analysis, risks assessment, improved safety features, active safety devices, condition-based maintenance, in-built protection systems, etc. This paper presents some cases of accidents in Indian surface coal mines and advocates a systems approach to safety.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the 3D surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. Studying the geometrical and temporal relationship between these two signals opens a broad window through which new management techniques become apparent. In this paper we discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining. This research was carried out in association with the Chevron Mining underground molybdenum mine in Questa, New Mexico. Some of these new techniques will be integrated into the decision management process at the mine and will provide insight on ore production, draw control, and safe reclamation. The science of signal processing involves the analysis and interpretation of physical processes that vary with time. Two general categories of signals1 are recognized. A continuous signal is a waveform of varying amplitude that is continuous in time (such as a sine wave). A discrete signal is a sequence of quantized values. The independent time variable and amplitude are sampled periodically such that we only know the value and shape of the waveform at the sampling frequency. Displacements measured by a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver are an example of this. Discrete signals may be studied in the time, frequency, autocorrelation, or wavelet domains. In this paper the amount of ore extracted from the mine and the measured surface displacements are analyzed in the time domain.

When mining accidents occur, workers often become trapped and/or incapacitated. Current rescue operations can be dangerous and too slow to produce favorable outcomes. Currently, no method exists for rescue crews to scout ahead at critical times to assess the situation. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), through a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) sponsored program has developed the Gemini-Scout mine rescue platform. The Gemini-Scout was created to assist in underground mine rescue missions. It has been designed to go into potentially hazardous environments to assess the conditions (structural, air quality, temperature). In addition, it will enable two-way communications with potential survivors prior to human rescue teams being able to enter the area. The Gemini platform is a dual tracked-chassis design, which gives the robot excellent mobility in unstructured environments. The design includes a passive 2-degree of freedom joint between two identical bodies allowing for ±30deg of pitch and roll. In addition to the base mobility platform, the Gemini-Scout incorporates many other features to help it succeed in its underground mission. The electronics are mounted in explosion proof housings to ensure safe operations in hazardous gas environments. The platform is also able to operate in up to 18in of standing water with its elevated pan/tilt cameras for navigation. A four-channel video link and Two-way audio on the vehicle help to ensure located survivors can communicate with the robot operators. The platform also incorporates a Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved multi-gas sensor to monitor air quality. SNL believes that this technology is broad enough to be appealing to other first responders, such as police, firefighters and medical personnel. Gemini could easily be fitted to handle earthquake and fire scenarios, and it could provide relief in currently inaccessible situations.

The objective of flotation models is to predict the recovery rate of minerals from a flotation cell. In this paper a CFD?based flotation models is presented. The model uses first order rate equation, and the collision frequency is estimated using Abrahamson [1] model with input from CFD two-phase simulations. Spatial distributions of dissipation rate and air volume fraction (also called void fraction) are determined by the two-phase hydrodynamic simulations. Knowing these parameters throughout the machine is essential in understanding the effectiveness of different components (rotor, stator or disperser, jets) on the flotation efficiency. Not only the average pulp recovery rate can be estimated but also the regions of high/low recovery rate can be identified. The CFD-based flotation model presented here can be used to determine the dependence of recovery rate constant at any locality within the pulp on particle diameter, particle specific gravity, contact angle, and surface tension.

The ability to optimise a concentrator from mill feed to final products requires a simulator which integrates comminution, classification and separation modelling. In order to model this range of processes, such a simulator must handle a variety of information about the ore. The AMIRA P9 project has developed a whole-of-concentrator simulation capability which brings together a texture-based model of mineral liberation, quantitative X-ray micro-tomography analysis to measure the inputs required by this model, and a multi-component simulator software framework. In the context of this approach, the term ?multi-component? implies the ability of the simulation to handle many particle properties simultaneously; for example size, composition, density, floatability etc. The simulation software framework provides the means to manage the flow of data around a circuit flowsheet, allowing each process model to access the information relevant to that particular model. A case study based on plant data from a gold-bearing pyrite concentrator is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the multi-component approach in simulating circuits which contain comminution and separation processes.

This contribution presents a methodology how to quantify froth zone recovery in a continuously operated laboratory mechanical flotation cell. The methodology consists of relating the overall flotation rate constant to the froth depth of the flotation cell. As a result, a froth zone recovery factor (Rf) can be extracted. This froth performance parameter has been studied as a function of the flotation cell operating variables. By understanding the effect of these operating variables on Rf, an integrated methodology for modelling froth zone performance in batch and continuously operated laboratory flotation cells has been proposed. The Rf modelling is based on a semi-empirical approach which considers a number of parameters to be used. Some of these parameters may have physical significance, i. e. they may be easily and physically measured. The modelling approach consists of taking into account the interaction between the pulp and froth zones. This interaction allows froth zone recovery (Rf) to be predicted. The whole modelling exercise process lies on auxiliaries relationships which indicate the dependence of the parameters with the operating conditions of the flotation cell. This contribution is part of a larger project that deals with the modelling and optimisation of flotation plants (Project P9L, 2000).

This National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was conducted to focus future research on the most significant electrical problems in the mining industry. Data from 1,926 mine electrical accidents (including 75 fatalities) that occurred between 1990 and 1999 were studied. Coal and metal-nonmetal operator- and contractor-reported data are presented. All data used in this analysis were MSHA closeout data, except 1999, which were preliminary data. Electricity was the 4th leading cause of death reported in mining despite being the 14th leading cause of injuries. Electrical shock, not electrical burns, caused 70 of the 75 electrical fatalities reported. About one-half of mine electrical accidents and fatalities occurred during electrical maintenance. Suggestions for mitigating electrical hazards are proposed.

MULTIFLUX, a new thermal, hydrologic, and airflow model and software is being developed to solve the flow of heat, moisture, and air in and around an underground opening. MULTIFLUX couples two distinct domains that are solved separately first and re-coupled as an iterative task: (1) the rockmass, and (2) the airway. The airway is solved with a lumped-parameter Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) module which is an embedded part of the MULTIFLUX code. The CFD model includes convection, conduction, and radiation for heat, as well as convection and diffusion for moisture transport in an air-filled opening. The CFD model also solves for the airflow field. The surrounding rockmass model may be from any analytical solution, or from a complex thermal-hydrologic numerical model such as NUFT or TOUGH2. The rockmass model is interfaced to MULTIFLUX using a novel technique called Numerical Transport Code Functionalization (NTCF). The method provides fast convergence on a personal computer platform. The paper reports the results of MULTIFLUX simulations for a mine drift, comparing calculations with a known mine climate software, CLIMSIM, and with measured data. Through this validation example, the performance of MULTIFLUX is demonstrated. The results show excellent agreement due to the use of realistic modeling assumptions and boundary conditions.

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. The project involves clearance improvements to twenty-eight tunnels, twenty-one of which require structural modification. With construction of the first Package of tunnels just underway at press time, this paper summarizes the program implementation from design through the initial stages of construction.

Traditionally, mineral sands are evaluated by preparing several mineral products using a combination of heavy liquid-, magnetic-, and electrostatic methods. Whole-rock assays (WRA) are then conducted on ilmenite, rutile and zircon products in order to determine trace element contents, which may affect project feasibility. Combined methods can be time consuming, expensive and even outdated due to the use of banned and toxic chemicals such as clerici solution. Coupled with large field-sample quantities, these procedures can potentially introduce unacceptable sampling and related errors. Modern mineralogical analysis techniques can provide complete mineralogical inventories on a single THM product, reducing the amount of processing involved in satisfactory characterization of early exploration samples. A small exploration sample can be processed to produce a small THM concentrate using readily available gravity/density methods. In turn, the THM product is submitted for Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) and mineralogical inspection by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and microscopic evaluation. Modal mineralogy and textural data can be determined using optical methods, automated image analysis, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) based systems. Benefits of automation are reproducibility and the capability of rapidly analysing thousands of particles as opposed to manual optical methods. Automated systems include the use of Automated Digital Image Analysis (ADIS), and SEM-based systems such as the Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) and QemSCAN. For detailed mineral chemistry, microanalysis techniques ranging from electron microprobe (EMPA) to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Laser Ablation Mass-Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LAM-ICP-MS) are used. Examples of these automated and analytical methods are presented. ADIS at SGS-Lakefield Research uses optical characteristics to identify and measure mineral species in THM samples; rutile, pseudorutile, ilmenite and leucoxene can be distinguished. Analysis of a single THM product provides bulk modal mineralogy and grain size distribution of particles and the individual mineral grains. Textural information is also obtained detailing mineral associations as well as degree of alteration. Where textural and chemical resolution renders mineral identification ambiguous, SEM-based methods offer better resolution. Examples of this ambiguity are shown in this paper, which leads to QemSCAN as the preferred method where within-grain variability is concerned. Sampling and measurement strategies are followed to meet study objectives, providing a value-added framework for a sequential, cost-effective strategy, which will meet due diligence and bankable accreditation criteria. Studying a THM product by electron microprobe and LAMICP-MS may reveal potential fatal flaws related to mineral chemistry. Low detection limits in the range of 200 to 500ppm are possible using electron microprobe analysis for suitable matrixes (U, Th in zircon). For the detection of ultra low level elemental contaminants, LAM ICPMS is the most accurate method of evaluation. Elements including U, Th, La, Ce, Nb, and V in Ti-minerals can be determined down to 50 ppm.

Exposure to the microscopic particles in diesel engine exhaust can lead to serious health problems, including the incidence of cancers, heart disease and increased susceptibility to respiratory ailments such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma. In Australia, mining companies and state government authorities are actively responding to this major occupational health and safety issue. Their initiatives place considerable emphasis on routine monitoring of diesel particle matter (DPM) exhaust emissions, both for engine benchmarking and as a part of routine engine maintenance. Implementation strategies follow two complementary paths: determination of individual engines? emission signatures combined with periodic engine re-certification; and co-operatively agreed industry-government engine maintenance programs, which are subject to audit. Both strategies place heavy reliance on real-time measurement of DPM concentrations in engine exhaust, using ruggedized instrumentation, mainly based on laser light scattering photometry. Adding value to this cooperative approach, industry has also collectively funded a government agency to design and manage a database, into which the results of all-routine DPM testing can be uploaded directly by individual mines. This win-win outcome is a great example of how cooperative action between governments and industry can deliver the goods: in this case, a safer working environment, more efficient energy use and the capacity to benchmark performance with industry peers.

To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations.

Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort with Sy-Klone International and Vulcan Materials Company to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed uni-directional filtration and pressurization system that brings all the clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This design provides the highest air quality to the equipment operator. Testing on this new system showed an almost 10-fold reduction in respirable dust inside the enclosed cab. The uni-directional design is easy to incorporate and should be considered for all new and retrofit systems in surface mining equipment.
