Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (FCX) is committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity in the areas in which we operate. As a member of the ICMM, FCX is committed to implement the 10 Sustainable Development (SD) Principles throughout our business. FCX is also a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC), a nonprofit coalition dedicated to protecting and enhancing wildl ife habitat. In alignment with ICMM SD Principle 7 and our Environmental Policy, FCX has set a performance goal to prepare a biodiversity inventory in 2010 and land management plan by end of 2011 for all active mining sites. In 2010 FCX established a Biodiversity Task Force to assist sites in biodiversity management; optimize use of resources around the globe; implement FCX goals and targets; and align biodiversity programs with ICMM principles and guidance. The task force consists of Environment and SD Department management, scientists and engineers from FCX sites, and WHC staff. The Task Force recently issued a biodiversity inventory guidance document to set expectations and provide consistency across the sites when developing a biodiversity inventory and land management plan.

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

The Belle Eldridge Mine is an inactive lead-zinc mine in Spruce Gulch south of Deadwood, South Dakota. Acidic mine drainage (AMD) produced at the site drains into Spruce Creek, a tributary of Whitewood Creek. The site is on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Extensive fieldwork was done at the Belle Eldridge Mine through the cooperation of the BLM and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The site was extensively mapped to identify physical and environmental hazards such as tailings, waste rock, collapsed buildings, adits and workings. An exhaustive search of the historical records of the Belle Eldridge Mine was conducted. Maps of the under-ground workings of the Belle Eldridge dating from the 1930’s and 1940’s were found. The maps were used to correlate currently collapsed features to old adits and tunnels. Using hand corers and a portable drill rig, waste rock, tailings and soil core samples were collected and depth to bedrock was determined and the total volume of waste and tailings pile were determined. Related work examined the hydrology of the site. The site is very complex hydrogeologically. Numerous underground and surface workings and tunnels add to the complexity. Several seeps are located at the site, one of which is producing AMD. Recharge to the site was studied, and a 100-year flood plain map was produced.

Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment, and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. But this efficiency also comes at a cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impacts of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to proper use of results in mine design. A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) has been applied, almost exclusively, to flat or gently rolling surfaces. One of the primary steps in the FRA is to loosely grade the top 1.22-m (4-ft) of soil or substitute root growth medium to avoid excessive compaction. Concern has been expressed by regulators and the public that loose grading on steep slopes could lead to slope failures, which is one of the issues that SMCRA sought to correct. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. There has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analyses indicate that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope.

Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. Multiple seam mining is prevalent in Southern Appalachia because economically mineable coal seams are numerous and frequently occur in close vertical proximity. West Virginia, Kentucky, and Virginia have 117, 55, and 40 mineable coal seams respectively. It is extremely rare to have an underground mine that has not been undermined, overmined, or has mining adjacent to it. In many cases the multiple seam mining is concurrent with extraction sequenced in superjacent seams. Because underground mining is focused on recovering the most valuable reserves, mining is rarely practiced from the top seam down, which is the practice most conducive to stability. The combination of room-and-pillar mining methods that include development only, small block, partial retreat, full retreat, and longwall mining produce a wide range of mining geometries and complexity in underlying and overlying seams. In the future, the number of multiple seam operations will increase as reserves are depleted and future mines are, by default, located closer to abandoned mine workings. The improved coal market has transformed many formerally uneconomically mineable seams into attractive reserves. The approaches and methodologies used for multiple seam stability analysis are dictated by the site conditions, including overburden/interburden thickness and lithology, mining geometry, and the mining methods in both the active and abandoned mines. Multiple seam stability analysis using analytical and numerical methods is illustrated by two case histories that reflect close proximity room-and-pillar mining and mining in bump prone situations.

This concept paper is presented in the hope of raising the awareness of mankind on the necessity for its peaceful coexistence with nature. It is a food for thought. It takes compromise and sacrifice of people, who will have to learn to curb their greed and move toward a more organic form of prosperity. A nature-friendly sustainability is first step toward the protection of nature that is critical to the mutual survival of mankind and nature. People need the resources from the finite earth to survive and nature needs the prevention of human destruction in order to continue to regenerate and provide. The contemporary notion of sustainability is self-serving. It serves the interest of industry by camouflaging itself to look like nature?s protector. The ?sustainability? concept presented in this paper aims to extend the longevity of the utilization of the limited natural resources for many generations to come. It is an important, responsible first step in creating a healthy sustainability concept that, when implemented, extends the longevity of mankind by the most efficient use of the finite resources on this limited Planet Earth, all the while taking into consideration the increase in anthropogenic activities due to exponential human population growth. This new definition of ?sustainability? has completely different characteristics than its contemporary versions. Nature has its own destiny, rules and principles. Being a part of nature, human society depends on it for survival and must play by its rules and never the other way round as in its initial pretensions. Society should not try to humanize nature, but rather to respect the rule of the nature in a peaceful way of co-existence. When implemented, this new concept of sustainability aims to affect the designs of engineered structures and revolutionize the recovery methods and processing of natural resources, such as mineral resources in the most efficient manner. Finally, this paper intends to stimulate critical thinking and initiate serious discussions aiming at producing a general consensus for the best definition for human society to not only enrich, but to extend its existence. An analytical procedure is presented for evaluating the stresses in linings of bored tunnels caused by kinematic soil-lining interaction. Three cases of interaction as produced by the following conditions are treated: (1) relaxation of in situ soil stresses near a lining following its installation; (2) overburden pressure at the soil surface; and (3) free-field soil response resulting from an earthquake. Non-dimensional formulas and graphs resulting from parametric studies are presented for practical tunnel design applications. The procedure is applied separately to a steel lining and a concrete lining for a site located at the lower end of Market Street in San Francisco through which a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit)tunnel passes.

The growing availability of information and data analysis capabilities of recent years provides new opportunities for improving the performance of mining operations. By using real-time measurements and artificial intelligence, it is possible to respond faster to changing conditions, while accurate and timely information permits rapid evaluation of changes and fast business improvement decisions. This article presents a blueprint for alignment of systems, organizational design, and management practices to leverage these developments in performance-driven operations management in mining and mineral processing. The first component of the blueprint is a performance framework with a system of key performance indicators for production control that can be used across organizational levels. This system places improvement at the core of management activities, giving greater importance to improvement skills at lower organizational levels, so companies can leverage available information for improving operational control. Secondly, the blueprint defines an organizational structure that strengthens performance improvement with technological and change management capabilities. Finally, the blueprint proposes alignment of management practices, covering the optimization of short-interval controls, the application of an improvement project portfolio management system that determines the ownership of improvement projects, and the coordination of controls across the organization. This combination of systems, organizational design, and management alignment supports rapid decision-making at the right organizational level. Introduction of the presented blueprint for operations management enables mines to leverage the developments in information and analysis capabilities to improve the performance of operations.

This is the fourth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. The table presents previous information plus about two dozen new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Last year's tabulation appeared in two issues, to accommodate all of the information. This year the format has been changed slightly so the table can be printed in one issue. This year's table presents the commodities in the same sequence as last year. Sand and gravel information appears first, followed by: crushed stone for aggregate; other stone; industrial sand; other industrial minerals; energy minerals (coal, oil shale, uranium); and finally metals. As always, a caveat relates to factors that influence the reserve values. The data should serve only as a general reference. The table is not intended to present an absolute scale of reserve costs. Several factors influence the value of mineral commodities. These factors include: • location and transportation costs (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions for both the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing and beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; • and legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will influence reserve costs of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity; the location (either by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province); the cost (R for royalty and P for purchased cost); and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The paper summarizes an investigation into the applicability of mechanical excavation to oil shale mining; identifies available machine types that are best suited to various aspects of the mining operation; presents preliminary comments on the configuration of an "IDEAL" oil shale mining machine; and establishes the background information necessary for conceptualizing and evaluating new mining methods using mechanical excavation equipment. Conclusions are also presented as to the best currently available systems, as well as potential future systems.

"Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen are two hydrothermally active sites located along the border of the Azorean plateau, southwest of the Azores islands where the alteration processes affecting basaltic rocks are prominent (Costa et al., 2003). Here we report on a slabby brecciated rock, abundant at both Lucky Strike and Menez Gwen, composed mainly of basaltic fragments cemented by hydrothermal precipitates from warm fluid circulation system. Research reveals that hydrothermal alteration takes place mainly by replacement processes, in which silicification is dominant (Costa et al., 1997 and Costa, 2014).Petrographic observations, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microprobe analysis, and mass balance studies made on basaltic fragments within the breccia show that silicification is one of the main processes resulting from hydrothermal fluid circulation. This alteration process leads to complete replacement by silica, in extreme cases, forming an impermeable cap that may contribute to the formation of sub-seafloor sulphide deposits, including examples in the geological past."

Mine Terex articulated dump trucks are working on a large restoration project of an abandoned open cast coal site in Blacklaw, central Scotland. The project is part of the construction of a 42-turbine wind farm complex. During the scheduled 18-month duration of the project, three 28-t(31-st) Generation 7 TA30 dump trucks and the six 36.5-t (40-st) TA40articulated trucks are estimated to move about 1Mm3 (1.3 million cu yd)of material. The trucks are working12-hour shifts, 5.5days a week.

INTRODUCTION Geology, the science of the earth, is the fundamental science in the construction of a tunnel. The approximate site of a tunnel is determined by its purpose. The geology of the tunnel site will determine the cost--or feasibility of a tunnel--the specific alignment to accomplish the purpose of the tunnel, the design of the tunnel (within the limits of the purpose of the tunnel), and the methods of construction. The more accurately the geology of a proposed tunnel can be depicted, the more accurately can the cost of a tunnel be estimated. The factors that should be defined for tunnel design and construction are the physical characteristics of the material in which the tunnel is to be constructed. The physical characteristics of the material are determined by the genesis of the material, and subsequent geologic processes that have affected the material. The geologic materials in which tunnels are constructed can be broadly classified as unconsolidated and consolidated. The unconsolidated materials include chiefly deposits of recent geologic time that occur near the surface. Because these deposits occur near the surface, and tunnels constructed in them will be at shallow depth, methods of physical exploration such as geophysical methods, trenching, and drilling will give more data at relatively low cost--therefore the physical exploration is generally, or should be, quite extensive--and the

Anecdotal evidence suggests that re-entering a sealed heating poses a significant hazard, whereby the original heating is rejuvenated at an accelerated rate forcing withdrawal and re-sealing of the area. Bulk-scale laboratory experiments using a two-metre column confirm these mine site observations. A high volatile bituminous coal from New South Wales, Australia was allowed to develop a significant hot spot before being inerted with nitrogen and allowed to cool. Air was then allowed back into the coal after the nitrogen was turned off and a hot spot developed almost immediately at the same location as the original hot spot before it quickly migrated towards the air source within a day. Two more re-entries were simulated. Each successive re-entry developed a broader hot spot and took longer to reach thermal runaway. These results clearly show the behaviour that can be expected when trying to recover a section of an underground coal mine that has been sealed due to a spontaneous combustion event.

"Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project is under construction in Sri Lanka. This project involves 2 Rolled Concrete Core (RCC) Dams connected through a tunnel currently under construction by Drill and Blast method. The water is transferred from first diversion dam to the 2nd regulatory dam and from which, it will be transferred through a 14 km headrace tunnel to the top of a 650 m deep drop shaft that feeds the high pressure water to an underground powerhouse and turbine chamber for generation of 120 MW of electricity. The Headrace and Tailrace tunnels are being excavated by two 4.4 m diameter double shield TBMs. The headrace tunnel has already passed 5km milestone and is mined in hard rock, while the tailrace tunnel has been completed in rather weak and fractured ground. This paper will review the history of the project along with the geology of the site. The operation of TBM in headrace tunnel will be discussed in more detail, focusing on the challenges of excavating through very strong and abrasive quartzite and gneiss on this site, as well as reaches of tunnel in high inflow of water reaching 400 L/Sec. INTRODUCTION This paper aims to introduce the Uma Oya Multipurpose Development Project (UOMDP) as a hydro mechanical project in Sri Lanka, targeted generating hydro-electric power, transferring water for irrigation purposes and controlling seasonal devastating flood. This project lies in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka (Figure 1). The main part of the project is located in the south-western part of the Badulla district in the province of Uva. The south-eastern end of the project site is in the central west of the Moneragala district (province of Uva). Bandarawela is the largest urban setting within the project area, located halfway between the upstream and the downstream ends of the planned hydropower plant and combination of dams, tunnels, and downstream facilities. The Multi-Purpose Project Of Uma Oya is planned to convey water from Uma Oya to Kirindi Oya Basin for hydroelectric energy generation includes Puhulpola RCC Dam on the Uma Oya river, Dyraaba RCC Dam on the Mahatotilla Oya river, a conveyance tunnel from Uma Oya to Mahatotilla Oya (L=3750m), a long feeder tunnel from Mahatotilla Oya to Kirindi Oya. Soda Springs background The Soda Springs phosphate mine and plant is a joint venture between Monsanto and its operating partner, Solutia Inc. The operation is based in southeastern Idaho in the Western Phosphate Field. The plant is located about 275 km (170 miles) northeast of Salt Lake City, UT and about 4 km (2.5 miles) north of the town of Soda Springs.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008 ? ?I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated? (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and often spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep the operation running. With examination there are some things that can be done to make the best use of ventilation systems. Should there be surplus air, in which some of these options may result - financial and other benefits can be obtained. Some of the issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and non-metal mines. Also, operations are faced with demands from reserves that are deeper, hotter and further away from fans and shafts, not to mention increased production demands. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal non-metal operations but some may be applicable to coal too. OPTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT Some of the areas to be addressed are shop ventilation methods, auxiliary equipment areas, dedicated intakes and returns, optimizing development, examination of mine airway utilization and alternative ventilation methods. UNDERGROUND SHOPS First, examine what is being done with the underground shop air. If it is being coursed directly to the returns there may be some potential to better utilize this, in most cases, relatively contaminant free air. Research the legal options for ventilating mine shops. MSHA regulations in 30CFR 57.4761 (1) allow the following options: To confine or prevent the spread of toxic gases from a fire originating in an underground shop where maintenance work is routinely done on mobile equipment, one of the following measures shall be taken: use of control doors or bulkheads, routing of the mine shop air directly to an exhaust system, reversal of mechanical ventilation, or use of an automatic fire suppression system in conjunction with an alternate escape route. The alternative used shall at all times provide at least the same degree of safety as control doors or bulkheads. Discussion This regulation gives some operators flexibility in ventilating underground shop facilities. If shop air is to be coursed through the work area, and then directly to the mine return, the question should be asked ? is the quality of air good enough to be reused in the mine, and if so, what are the risks? Can the risks be accommodated and managed to accomplish the change? If so, a considerable increase in mine level airflow could be attained by reusing shop air. Clearly, regulations are a minimum standard, and can be exceeded. Metal non-metal mine regulations are not as specific as coal due to the multitude of different mining methods and conditions utilized. Risks must be thoroughly examined and addressed to assure a safe environment. Issues Determine what contaminants are being produced in the work area ? welding fumes, diesel exhaust, paint fumes, chemicals and solvents, etc. Survey the area and determine exposures. MSHA requires exposure monitoring in 30 CFR 57.5002 (1) of dust, gasses mists and fumes to assure air quality is being met. Perform surveys and examine existing data to quantify personal and area concentrations of contaminants. Often there is adequate circulation such that exposure levels in shop work areas are low. After sending shop air back into the system any contaminants would be further lowered by dilution with other mine intake air downstream. Look at the shop work schedule. If only on day shift, the other two shifts and possibly weekends have no activity or source of contamination to affect the ventilation system. The worst case planning scenario would be a shop fire. Study and simulate how this would affect the mine and shop area. MSHA regulations require an escape route and a fire suppression system be installed and maintained as follows in 30 CFR 57.4671 (1): (d) Automatic fire suppression system and escape route. If used as an alternative, the automatic fire suppression system and alternate escape route shall meet the following requirements: (1) The suppression system shall be? (d)(1)(i) Located in the shop area; (d)(1)(ii) The appropriate size and type for the particular fire hazards involved; and (d)(1)(iii) Inspected at weekly intervals and properly maintained. (2) The escape route shall bypass the shop area so that the route will not be affected by a fire in the shop area. Case Study In an underground room and pillar mine, active mine workings were advancing further away from the mine shaft with deteriorated returns and leakage having a negative effect on ventilation airflows to the face. Mine level airflows were 236 m3/s (500,000 cfm) and shop airflows were 24 m3/s (50,000 cfm) (see Figure 1A). No additional capacity was available at the main surface fan. A solution was to utilize the shop air then send it to the mine areas instead of directly to the return. Considerable information on shop air quality and exposures from many years of operation was examined and no negative data was discovered. A risk analysis determined that moving forward with a shop air reuse program was desirable. A plan was developed, analyzed and decision to proceed approved by mine management. The change was simulated on the computer with the USBM/MTU MFire program before being implemented. This included utilizing fire scenarios to examine potential exposures to inby mining sections and plan escape routes. A monitoring system was designed and installed in cooperation with the US Bureau of Mines to monitor carbon monoxide

Although production operations at mines, representing the extraction and removal of the mined material, often appear to receive the greatest amount of attention, the emphasis given to auxiliary operations is continually increasing. This is due to the changing economic, social, and environmental climate in which modern mines must operate. Auxiliary operations can best be described as those activities that are not directly related to the extraction and removal of the mined material, but must receive proper attention if recovery is to take place in a safe, efficient, and socially responsible manner. In fact, certain mining auxiliary operations, such as strata control and ventilation, are considered to be of such importance that they warrant separate sections in this Handbook. Judging from a mine-personnel standpoint, it is not uncommon for a mine to hire the same number or more individuals responsible for auxiliary operations as the number assigned to production.
