Many subsidence researchers in the U. S. have developed new empirical function methods to predict subsidence, or attempted to validate some empirical functions developed by foreign researchers for use in the U. S. An attempt is made in this paper to develop a new empirical function to predict a surface subsidence basin due to longwall mining. In the U. S., the emphasis of empirical methods for the subsidence prediction over longwall panels has been in large part on determining the profile functions for the major cross-sections of a subsidence basin. In this approach, the surface monuments are usually laid out along the major cross-sections and thus, the subsidence profiles developed are restricted for subsidence prediction along the major cross-sections. However in practice many monuments or surface structures for which subsidence prediction for damage evaluation is required, are not laid out along the major cross-section of the basin. In such cases, it is difficult to get either the empirical profile function for the cross-sections where these structures are located or to predict their subsidence based on the profile function developed for the major cross-sections. Therefore, there exists a strong need to develop a subsidence basin function with a reasonable degree of accuracy, which can be determined or confirmed by the data of scattered monuments on a surface basin. The same subsidence basin function can also be used for prediction of subsidence for any arbitrary points over a longwall panel. In 1982, He (1) proposed the clastic theory, for which he developed the basic differential equations describing the movement and deformation of overburden due to underground mining, and performed the selection of best solution for the equations. He found that the Weibull dietribution is the optimal solution. The Weibull distribution has three parameters that vary to fit the subsidence profile so well that the profile function derived from it provides a high degree of accuracy in subeidence prediction. Our aging infrastructure includes numerous tunnels that provide easy access through topographic and societal obstacles. These tunnels are renewable resources that require periodic maintenance and rehabilitation to extend their useful lifespan to hundreds or even thousands of years. However, as with any structural rehabilitation project, tunnel liner rehabilitation requires an inordinate amount of evaluation and care due often poorly documented original construction and subsequent repair construction methods and materials. This paper documents the investigation, planning, design, and construction efforts of the rehabilitation of a 74-year old, 216-meter (713 foot) long two-lane highway tunnel in moderately fractured to highly sheared basalt on the Oregon coast. The tunnel consists of four sections lined originally with timber and subsequently overlaid with concrete, and three unlined sections.

One of the main objectives of this study was to evaluate a fine-coal cleaning circuit using an enhanced gravity separator specifically for a high sulfur coal application. The evaluation not only included testing of individual unit operations used for fine-coal classification, cleaning and dewatering, but also included testing of the complete circuit simultaneously. At a scale of nearly 2 t/h, two alternative circuits were evaluated to clean a minus 0.6-mm coal stream utilizing a 150-mm-diameter classifying cyclone, a linear screen having a projected surface area of 0.5 m2, an enhanced gravity separator having a bowl diameter of 250 mm and a screen-bowl centrifuge having a bowl diameter of 500 mm. The cleaning and dewatering components of both circuits were the same; however, one circuit used a classifying cyclone whereas the other used a linear screen as the classification device. An industrial size coal spiral was used to clean the 2- x 0.6-mm coal size fraction for each circuit to estimate the performance of a complete fine-coal circuit cleaning a minus 2-mm particle size coal stream. The ?linear screen + enhanced gravity separator + screen-bowl circuit? provided superior sulfur and ash-cleaning performance to the alternative circuit that used a classifying cyclone in place of the linear screen. Based on these test data, it was estimated that the use of the recommended circuit to treat 50 t/h of minus 2-mm size coal having feed ash and sulfur contents of 33.9% and 3.28%, respectively, may produce nearly 28.3 t/h of clean coal with product ash and sulfur contents of 9.15% and 1.61%, respectively.

This paper describes the Contractor’s value engineering design and the construction of the Interstate I-90 highway tunnel sections under the South Station railroad yard in Boston, MA for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, using tunnel jacking and ground freezing techniques. Three tunnel box sections were constructed and installed, with typical cross-sectional dimensions of 11.6 m x 23.8 m, and respective lengths of 50.9 m, 78.7 m and 115.6 m. A 12-compartment concrete shield was built as part of the front of each multi-sectional tunnel box structure. The jacking systems employed consisted of rear and intermediate jacking stations and up to 87 individual jacks, providing a maximum total thrust capacity of 42,300 t. The tunnel alignments pass through a geologic profile consisting of historic fill, which contains remnants of old waterfront structures, building foundations and a forest of 19th century vintage timber piles, underlain by organic sediments and marine clay. Ground cover over the tunnels is in the range of 1.8–7.6 m. The groundwater table is at depths of 1.5–3 m below surface grade. The paper discusses the techniques developed and equipment used to successfully build and install these tunnel box structures with minimal impact on the commuter and long distance railroad operations directly above the tunnel alignments. Figure 1 shows the track area at the I-90 EB and WB tunnels.

Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

During its modem era, the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming has grown from meager origins in the early 1970s to become one of the most important coal-producing regions in the United States. In 1993, production and sales of southern Powder River Basin coal exceeded 190 Mt (209 million st), or about 20% of the US coal industry. Despite the remote location of the PRB relative to its potential markets, most coal industry observers anticipate continued strong growth to meet utility compliance plans for Phases I and II of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). This article is an overview of supply and demand issues concerning the marketing of southern PRB coal. It reviews the events leading up to the recent run on spot coal and offers a forecast of demand and prices.

Pig iron nuggets, which have similar chemical and physical properties with blast furnace pig iron, were produced by a single step heat treatment of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs. During this single step heat treatment the transformation of self reducing fluxing dried greenballs into pig iron nuggets did not take place instantaneously. Rather, it was composed of three transformation stages, (1) transformation of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs into direct reduced iron (DRI), (2) transformation of DRI into transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and (3) transformation of TDRI into pig iron nuggets. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate these transformation mechanisms by analyzing the transformation stage products. The transformation stage products were produced at a constant furnace temperature of 1425°C and various furnace residence times. They were characterized according to their microstructure, microhardness and apparent density. The changes in the product’s physical and chemical properties with furnace residence time were utilized in understanding the transformation behavior, the chemical events that took place and the controlling mechanisms. It was determined that the transformations were dictated by the changes in the slag viscosity and wetting properties, and by carbon diffusion into metallized areas.

Mining activities at Kennecott and Park City are similar in that both districts began operation in the last half of the 18th century, and both operated on a large scale for many years. However, they are different for two important reasons. First, the mines in the Park City district were always underground. The city of Park City was above many of those mine workings. It remained in place after mining activity stopped, and as the town became an up-scale ski resort, property values increased and the tailings dumps became desirable building sites. In contrast, Kennecott eventually became an open pit mine, and the growing pit effectively consumed many of the small towns that had grown up around the underground workings. Even towns on the periphery of the open pit were razed to allow for the disposal of mine overburden. Second, almost all mining activity stopped in Park City in the early 1970s, just as the first rigorous environmental legislation in the United States was enacted. (The Ontario mine operated sporadically until 1982.) Many mine structures, waste dumps, tailings ponds and piles, and tunnels were simply abandoned as the mining companies ceased business or were bought out. Kennecott, on the other hand, has been in continuous operation for more than 120 years, so a closure plan hasn’t been finalized. Nonetheless, environmental and social problems have arisen, and the company has had to address them.

Many states rely upon the Pennsylvania 1957 “Gas Well Pillar Study” to evaluate the coal barrier surrounding gas wells (Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, 1957). The study included 77 gas well failure cases that occurred in the Pittsburgh and Freeport coal seams over a 25-year span. At the time, coal was mined using the room-and-pillar mining method with full or partial pillar recovery, and square or rectangle pillars surrounding the gas wells were left to protect the wells. The study provided guidelines for pillar sizes under different overburden depths up to 700 ft. The 1957 study has also been used to determine gas well pillar sizes in longwall mines since longwall mining began in the 1970s. The original study was developed for room-and-pillar mining and could be applied to gas wells in longwall chain pillars under shallow cover. However, under deep cover, severe deformations in gas wells have occurred in longwall chain pillars. Presently, with a better understanding of coal pillar mechanics, new insight into subsidence movements induced by retreat mining, and advances in numerical modeling, it has become both critically important and feasible to evaluate the adequacy of the 1957 study for longwall gas well pillars. In this paper, the data from the 1957 study is analyzed from a new perspective by considering various factors, including overburden depth, failure location, failure time, pillar safety factor (SF), and floor pressure. The pillar SF and floor pressure are calculated by considering abutment pressure induced by full pillar recovery. A statistical analysis is performed to find correlations between various factors and helps identify the most significant factors for the stability of gas wells influenced by retreat mining. Through analyzing the data from the 1957 study, the guidelines for gas well pillars in the 1957 study are evaluated for their adequacy for room-and-pillar mining and their applicability to longwall mining. Numerical modeling is used to model the stability of gas wells by quantifying the mining-induced stresses in gas well casings. Results of this study indicate that the guidelines in the 1957 study may be appropriate for pillars protecting conventional gas wells in both room-and-pillar mining and longwall mining under overburden depths up to 700 ft but may not be sufficient for protective pillars under deep cover. The current evaluation of the 1957 study provides not only insights about potential gas well failures caused by retreat mining but also implications for what critical considerations should be considered to protect gas wells in longwall mining.

Most geologic and mining engineering consulting firms* began to experience the recession with declining billing levels, number of inquiries, and proposal requests in late 1981 or early 1982. As of today, most of them have been functioning at reduced income levels for nearly a year. And while many consulting firms have apparently reached a stabilized income level, they can see little prospect for attaining normal (pre-late 1981) billing levels and income for the remainder of 1983. A few firms have escaped being affected by the recession. Such com panies almost without exception are small (fewer than 20 personnel), offer a limited range in technical capabilities, and tend to be highly specialized in a particular niche. They include those specializing in the heap leaching of precious metals ores, in ground water testing programs, and in the derivation of computer-aided programs to monitor particular mineral processing functions. Those firms affected by the economic downturn have instituted a variety of policies and undertaken actions to cope with significantly reduced incomes to bring fixed costs in line with the depressed demand for services. These changes fall into the following broad categories: • management and management practices; • markets and market definition; • marketing and the pursuit of assignments; and • administration and personnel relationships. Not all of the perceived changes have necessarily been instituted by every consulting firm, and any one appears sporadically instituted. Management and Management Practices In favorable times the managers, and often the owners of the equity, of consulting firms tend to concentrate their attention on the part of the business they find most satisfying and enjoyable. For some, this means acting as project or assignment leaders, even undertaking a specific technical aspect of the job. For others, it means constant marketing with the associated heavy travel and entertainment schedules. In unfavorable conditions, such as the current recession, managers tend to spread themselves far more thinly, expending time and effort on all facets of the business including marketing, proposal preparation and cost estimating, budgeting, general administration, accounting and cash flow monitoring, project/assignment overview, and actual client work. The manager who in favorable times concentrated on client work is now less billable. The manager who concentrated on marketing is somewhat more billable. The manager now needs to pay attention to and expend equal effort on each facet of the business just to keep all the facets in relative balance. Falling behind schedule on a client job or carrying an unduly large percentage of accounts receivable exact a cost to the firm. Clearly the absolute cost to the firm is the same whether demand for service is good or slack. But in periods of slack demand the firm is frequently less able or even unable to bear such costs. Marketing and Market Definition Markets appear to have undergone some significant changes: • Federal and state governments have assumed a greater importance as providers of work vis-a-vis both industry and private groups. • Projects with increase-in-capacity aspects have given way to projects with maintenance or reduced operating cost aspects. • Projects searching for new deposits of minerals in generally new locations have given way to projects reviewing known mineral districts or known deposits. • Industrial mineral and mining companies have exhibited a great propensity to cut back the use of consultants and to undertake as much work as possible in-house. Further-more, a number of industrial mineral and mining companies have entered the competitive arena with consulting firms, submitting proposals (usually to the federal government) in an effort to keep their staffs intact and occupied. In response, consulting firms have reevaluated their capabilities by reviewing old work and reassessing personnel. The purpose is to broaden the services offered and the potential client base, thus redefining the available market. For example, a firm specializing in assessment of technical and cost parameters of a deposit would normally assist a prospective lender in judging the deposit's suitability for project financing. That same company could easily expand into the field of analyzing production costs for an individual operation -something that is needed in periods when lower prices reduce profit margins. Similarly, a firm that has confined such economic assistance to commercial banks could expand to provide its expertise to other lending and even equity buying in-stitutions such as insurance companies. The Samira Hill gold mine represents the first commercial gold project for the landlocked country of Niger in West Africa. It began production in October 2004 as the result of over 10 years of exploration and development work. There were several administrative, social and technical challenges that had to be overcome to realize the successful development of the project. The Samira mine is located on the geological structure known as the ‘Samira Horizon’ which is developing as a promising district for additional discoveries and other mine developments.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of 12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

Five sewer connections were required to divert Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO)from existing outfalls to an old underutilized large diameter brick sewer (the Easterly Interceptor). The connections were part of an on-going CSO control program by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) in the City of Cleveland, Ohio. Each connection was made by pipejacking and hand-mining a fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) pipe through soft glaciolacustrine clays and silts. Jet grouting was utilized to stabilize the soils and fill the voids surrounding the interceptor prior to making the underground connection. Reinforced concrete liners were constructed inside the aging brick sewer to provide structural stability during ground improvements and connection work. The project also involved micro tunneling two approximately400 foot lengths of FRP pipe through soft ground using a slurry pressure balanced machine.

Time-dependent ground behavior may have important implications for the construction process or the life of a tunnel. The paper gives a concise overview of the influence of time on the deformations and the stability of underground openings, including topics such as face stability in soft ground or the time-development of pressure or deformations in squeezing or swelling rock. While keeping in mind practical questions of tunnel engineering, emphasis is placed on understanding the observed time-dependency, on the underlying mechanisms (such as pore water pressure dissipation or chemical processes) as well as on the respective inherent prediction-uncertainties and design-uncertainties.

One would be hard pressed to find another project as complex as this one given its configuration, the variety of issues to address and the required construction techniques. Contract C710 is currently under construction as part of Sound Transit’s Link Light Rail, connecting downtown Seattle with Sea-Tac Airport. The paper describes the construction-to-date of the deep mined station under Beacon Hill using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). This deep “binocular” station is being mined through some of the most challenging soft ground conditions in the USA. The excavated volume of the station is approximately 60,000 cy (46,000 m3) and the station comprises a variety of geometries and cross sections ranging from 235 sf (22 m2) up to 1,670 sf (155 m2). This underground complex includes platform, concourse, cross-passage and emergency ventilation tunnels together with station egress and ventilation shafts. Various excavation sequences are in use for the different tunnels including the twin-sidewall drifts for the impressive45 ft (13.7 m) wide by 42 ft ( 12.8 m) high concourse cross adits. This station has two train platforms approximately 165 feet (50m) below the surface. This station, constructed in highly variable glacial deposits including water bearing sands and silts approximately 50 ft below multiple perched water tables in an urban setting, creates a very unique and challenging situation. Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

Narrow vein mining, with enough challenge and also where the cutting edge technology can be applied, is still a very important and exciting portion of the mining industry. Based on the deposit characteristics, the most flexible mining method, cut and fill, has been being tested mining this high grade Northern Nevada property, Hollister, since the year of 2008. In the last three years, 254,000 tons of ore were hauled out of the portal and 23,000 feet of development were excavated underground with the winning of several safety and environmental awards. Together with mine geology, the essential segments include mining cycle, ground control, ventilation, grade control and backfill method in cut and fill stopes were covered in this paper.

The Pascua Lama Project is situated on the border of Chile and Argentina at an elevation of 4,800 m. The ore contains gold, silver and copper, and an initial milling production rate of 33,000 t/d is planned. The mineralogy of this deposit is unusual. The ore is hard and abrasive, and it contains a complex array of sulphate minerals, such as chalcanthite, jarosites and alunites. The sulphides are predominantly enargite and pyrite. A novel flowsheet has therefore been developed, which includes dry grinding and ore washing to remove and then neutralize the soluble salts, prior to flotation, cyanide leaching and Merrill-Crowe recovery of the precious metals. These metallurgical issues and challenges associated with plant design and construction in the high and remote Andes Mountains make this a particularly challenging project.

This paper reflects the challenges encountered during the construction of the light rail tunnels under Boyle Heights, in Los Angeles, California. Equipped with two state-of-the-art EPB TBMs, the construction team undertook the mining of twin bored tunnels in the Los Angeles alluvium. The gassy underground conditions dictated many aspects of the design of the tunnels, as well as the tools and means used for their construction. This paper will detail the challenges encountered during construction, as well as the means, methods and logistics used on the project. Discussion includes: EPB TBM machines with some very unique/specific features; complex assembly sequence due to limited shaft access; final precast concrete liner with double gaskets; NATM cross passage excavation in soft ground and below the water table; compensation grouting; mucking shaft arrangement.

Several of the larger copper projects recently built have included a molybdenum byproduct circuit as part of the overall project due to the favorable molybdenum market conditions and overall economic contribution to the project. This paper provides a summary of moly plant flotation practices across a number of both recent projects and historical ones. Modern Molybdenum flotation flowsheets predominantly incorporate self-aspirated cells and forced air cells with nitrogen addition. The paper provides insight into the process considerations, capital and operating costs associated with both of the cell types. It also reviews metallurgical aspects and important safety aspects. Other aspects including instrumentation and degree of automation are also discussed along with overall plant design.
