Anionic surfactants, such as oleic acid and sodium oleate (OLE), and cationic surfactants, such as dodecyl amine-hydrochloride (DDA), are used as flotation collectors of spodumene. However, recovery is poor even if activating ions are used because gangue minerals are also activated. Some reports demonstrate that OLE/DDA mixtures act as a selective collector to enhance spodumene recovery. From mostly macroscopic tests, it has been argued that anionic OLE and cationic DDA form electroneutral complexes, which are adsorbed on the mineral surface through chemisorption; however, no molecular evidence has been presented. Therefore, the adsorption mechanisms of the collector mixtures remain mostly unknown. It seems necessary to first study the behaviour of these surfactants confined in salt solutions, to determine auto-associations when they are pure and cross-associations when mixed, the transition from monomers to micelles, and the structure of the micelles and the effects of pH, temperature and concentration. In this paper, ab initio calculations are first used to determine the surface charge distribution of OLE and DDA separately. Then molecular dynamics simulations are used to determine the conformation, aggregation, and diffusion of these pure and mixed surfactants in freshwater and saltwater with the ionic strength of seawater in a pH range. In particular, it is interesting to determine the various associations that result in mixtures of both surfactants and the impact of alkali and alkaline earth metal cations on the structures formedp. Cations influence the order of the structure and orientation of water dipoles, reducing the mobility of water, ions, and surfactant molecules. "The modes of occurrence of arsenic and the effects of low-intensity leaching-flotation on arsenic removal from coal slime from the Tanggongta Plant, Inner Mongolia, China were investigated. The coal slime was examined using hydride generation inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry and X-ray diffraction to obtain the content of elements and the major minerals. The modes of occurrence of arsenic in minerals were determined using selective leaching, float-and-sink analysis, and polarized light microscopy. The results indicate that pyrite is the dominant carrier of arsenic in the coal slime, which predominantly exists in association with clay. Significant proportion of the arsenic is removed by a low-intensity leaching-flotation process, consistent with the data from selective leaching and flotation of gangue. The results show that low intensity leaching-alkali washing-flotation is more efficient than direct flotation and low-intensity leaching-flotation.IntroductionUnderstanding the occurrence of arsenic in coal and its removal is significant in optimizing coal utilization, because arsenic in the environment is viewed as a potentially toxic trace element (Finkelman, Belkin, and Zhang, 1999; Hall, 2002; Smith et al., 1992; Smedley et al., 2003; Zheng et al., 1999). Many studies on the modes of occurrence and concentration trends of arsenic in different coal and washing products have been performed (Diehl, Goldhaber, and Hatch, 2004; Kolker et al., 2000; Quick and Irons, 2002; Wang et al., 2006; Fan et al., 2016). Trace elements are usually preferentially associated with certain minerals and the form that these minerals take will influence the efficiency of removal during cleaning (Quick and Irons, 2002). Arsenic is mainly associated with minerals such as pyrite, carbonate, and silicate (Demir et al., 1998; Diehl, Goldhaber, and Hatch, 2004; Zhou et al., 2014). The existence of organically bound arsenic was also confirmed using X-ray absorption (Kolker et al., 2000). However, inorganic arsenic is the principal source of pollution because of its leachability and high concentration compared with organic arsenic (Fujino et al., 2004; Gao, Lu, and Wang, 2010; Jiang et al., 2008; Kolker et al., 2000)."

Theoretical substantiation of leaching of clustered ultra-fine gold by the electro-photo activated cyanide and chloride solutions is given in the paper; and processes of activation of leach solution by electrolysis and photo-activation are described. Comparative experiments on electro-photo activated leaching of ultra-fine gold from refractory ores by cyanide and chloride solutions were carried out. The material for research is primary ore of the Pogromnoe deposit (Russian Federation, Trans-Baikal Territory). The ore is characterised by the minimum sulfide minerals and the organic carbon content. Gold in ores of this deposit is presented as mainly ultra-fine. Gold inclusions in quartz and silica-alumina minerals (metasomatic minerals) are ultra-fine. Sulfide minerals (2.5-3%) are presented in ore generally by pyrrhotine (gold content does not exceed 10 g/t). Standard cyanide technology provides 49.5% gold recovery. Photo-electro activated air saturated NaCN provides 69.9% gold recovery. Laboratory research of chloride-hypochlorite column leaching demonstrated that the electro-photo activated method provided 78.9 % gold recovery to pregnant leach solution. Chloride-hypochlorite photo-electro activated solution can provide higher level of gold recovery with shorter process duration (10 days) in comparison with cyanide (40 days). The final decision regarding the choice of leach solution has to be done on the basis of technical and economic calculations. MunroPapers:Corporate exploration strategies by MacKenzie, B.W.The Engel Simulator and the search for uranium by Griffiths, J.C. and Singer, D.A.The Chairman opened the session by tracing the changes which have taken place in the exploration field since the days of the lone prospector who relied upon his individual skills and to a large extent on luck. The deposits which now remain to be discovered are better covered and are of lower grade. A much greater team effort, involving geoscientists and engineers, is required. The gamble is thus much greater -not only are the probabilities of failure still significant but the consequences are more severe. A recent Canadian survey indicated that expenditures of between two and nine million dollars on regional exploration programs are required to locate one significant deposit.The Chairman went on to say that these facts have led companies to regard exploration as another form of investment and to treat it accordingly. This had placed exploration in the context of corporate strategics and structures, which was the subject of the first paper of the session.In introducing his paper, Dr B. W. MacKenzie said that the paper suggested a decision framework for exploration planning. Initially the environment is analyzed to define observable and relevant economic characteristics. The terms of reference for exploration planning and the appropriate allocation of capital and skills are then established in the light of corporate objectives and growth alternatives. With the aid of this information and in the light of profit and corporate risk criteria, exploration strategies can be selected.Dr MacKenzie went on to say that the usefulness of the concept and criteria outlined in his paper depended critically upon three characteristics of any particular economic environment, namely, the return resulting from an economic discovery, the unit discovery Cost and the probability of making an economic discovery. He then showed by means of a case history relative to the Canadian Shield and Cordilleran areas that these three characteristics could, in fact, be evaluated for regions with reasonable histories of mineral activity.The first contributor to the discussion of the paper, Mr Alfred Weiss, mentioned that his group had been involved in exploration modelling for some ten years and were thus particularly interested in the paper. He went on to say that they had experienced greatest difficulty with reconnaissance programs and that he sensed that these difficulties were also present with the methodology which had been outlined. Mr Weiss asked Dr MacKenzie how he would deal with such situations when no information was available but where there was the potential for both exploration and discovery. Dr Mackenzie agreed that the lack of information was a very severe limitation and said that at the present time his methodology probably did not provide a basis for breaking down the broad geological regions he considered into areas for further assessment."

PrennThe Chairman in opening the session highlighted the current situation in the United States of America where some 85 to 90 per cent of all mining (except for coal) is done by open pit methods, and where some 40 per cent of the coal is mined by open pit. The South African industry is, of course, dominated by the deeper level underground gold mines; however, with the aid of an extensive open-pit technology developed in other countries, South African companies arc continuing to explore possibilities of open-pit exploitation of base mineral, coal and diamond deposits. Several successful ventures are already in operation at Phalabora, Optimum Colliery, Kimberley and elsewhere, and South Africa is undoubtedly benefitting in this regard by drawing on the experience of others.The papers of this session were therefore particularly pertinent, particularly when viewed in conjunction with those presented at an earlier South African conference devoted specifically to open pit mining.Two themes dominated the discussion which followed presentation of the three papers at this session. The first related to the practicability of using the reported techniques as a tool for management, and their acceptability as such to mine management. This was, of course, not peculiar to this particular session, but rather the major point of debate over the entire conference.The second theme concerned the reliability of the initial drill hole data on which any open-pit design must necessarily be based. This gave added emphasis to the problem of practicability, for no management is likely to accept an elaborate pit design unless confidence can be placed in the ore reserve assessment.In noting these two features of the discussion, it should be remembered that all the three papers dealt largely with design and pre-planning; there was an unfortunate lack of papers or discussion on the subject of controlling the day-to-day mining of open pits, and this is an area where the potential impact which can be made by the computer is even greater.In introducing his paper, Mr D. A. Phillips pointed out that it was concerned only with optimization, and that it therefore assumed, firstly, an adequate subdivision of the orebody into ore blocks characterized by grade, rock type, structure, etc., and, secondly, an acceptable forecast of costs and mineral prices in order to generate a suitable profit matrix. However, programs dealing with these problems for both massive, disseminated and stratiform ore bodies are available to Roan Consolidated Mines. The method of optimization which he had described had been used on a region split into 28 000 blocks, for which the program used three hours of C.P.U. time on an IBM 360/40 computer. The computer design had provided a three per cent improve¬ment on a normal design of the same area."

"Electron microbeam analysis of metallurgical samples covers a broad field and has applications in the areas of minerals processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, physical metallurgy and corrosion.Some idea of the possibilities of microbeam techniques can be illustrated by examining the following example of a run of mine gold ore sample. Milling and bulk chemical analysis of the ore will provide major and minor element analysis as well as the gold grade. More detailed chemistlY can also reveal the presence of trace elements that may be advantageous or deleterious to downstream processing. Electron microbeam analysis can provide additional information in the form of - size, liberation, association and composition of the gold, the percentage of refractory gold, the size, liberation, association and composition of enclosing sulphide or arsenide phases and the levels and association of the trace elements that may affect processing. In most cases electron microbeam analysis compliments bulk chemistry, and does not replace it. Both techniques should be used in parallel for maximum effect.This paper touches on the origin and history of electron microbeam techniques, as well as the theory behind microbeam analysis and processing. The more common types of instruments and their applications will also be dealt with briefly - more details on, and examples of, the applications and choice of technique will be covered in the presentation.Mosely first discovered, in 1913, that the frequency of emitted X-radiation excited by an electron beam is a function of the atomic number of the analysed element. This discovery led to the development of spectrochemical analysis. The forerunners of the electron microanalysers of today, however, were only invented during the nineteen fifties. The electron microprobe was developed in parallel by Castaing and Guinier in France and by Borovski in Russia, but Castaing's design was the basis of modern microanalysers. The initial area of analysis was brought down from over 1 mm2 to less than 2 µm, as it is today. In 1956 Cosslett and Duncumb invented the scanning electron microprobe, where a beam of electrons could be scanned across an area of a sample. This, in turn, led to the development of the electron microprobe with both scanning and point analysis capabilities that we know today.Essentially, all electron microbeam instruments operate by the production of a beam of electrons from a filament in a vacuum (i.e. an electron gun). The electron beam leaves the gun and is accelerated and focused by a series of electromagnetic lenses while passing down an evacuated column. The electrons eventually strike the surface of the sample to be analysed and may travel through a thin sample (transmitted electron microscopy) or react with a thicker sample to produce several reflected kinds of radiation."

Ion exchange resins were investigated for the effective recovery of platinum, palladium, and gold from a pregnant cyanide heap leach solution. Screening results indicated that strong-base anion exchange resins proved to be most effective in the recovery of these metal cyanides. Gold was selectively recovered with the use of Minix, while effective recovery of gold, platinum, and palladium over the base metals, copper, and iron, was achieved with Amberlite PWA-5. Successful elution of these metal cyanides was possible from both Minix and Amberlite PWA-5, using a 2M potassium thiocyanate solution at ambient temperature. Acidic thiourea was unable to elute platinum from either Minix or Amberlite PWA-5. Effective elution of palladium and gold were, however, achieved with use of acidic thiourea. Using these results, two conceptual flow diagrams for the recovery of these metals from cyanide solutions are proposed.

Gold extraction from double refractory ores using conventional cyanidation has proved challenging due to the presence of carbon within the ore. Carbon particles may adsorb leached gold resulting in gold losses to tailings, i.e. preg-robbing the gold. Some of the preg-robbed gold may be recovered by the application of the HiTeCC process on CIL tailings. The process developed by Metso Outotec involves caustic conditioning of the tailings followed by high temperature desorption and simultaneous adsorption onto virgin activated carbon of the aurodicyanide. The aim of this paper was to develop a model for the HiTeCC process which could be used to support design and optimisation of the process, based on the adsorption characteristics of the preg-robbing and activated carbons. It was found that accurate experimental isotherms can be used to predict the behaviour of preg-robbing adsorbents. Comparing the sorption isotherms for preg-robbing ores and activated carbon indicated similar dependencies on temperature and ionic composition. Applying boundary layer diffusion models coupled with experimentally determined isotherms for preg-robbing ore and activated carbon, the HiTeCC process was successfully simulated at experimental and plant scale. Gold recovery of the HiTeCC process is most sensitive to the temperature of desorption and gold loading of the activated carbon, with increased temperature improving recovery. The gold loading of the activated carbon in the process should always be maintained lower than that of the normalised pregrobbing carbon gold loading to ensure favourable conditions for adsorption onto the activated carbon. Caustic conditioning stabilises adsorption and is therefore not necessary during the desorption stages of the process, but potentially improves recovery during adsorption. "The crude ores from the LKAB mines are sorted and refined into a number of products. As there are a number of different plants the flow of material is often complex.in connection with studies of a proposed extensive investment program it was necessary to get a good measure of the changes which would be caused in the total profit by the different possible investments. A linear programming model was set up to accomplish this, and to cover the consequential effects on the production system. The objective function of the model maximized the total profit, taking into account restrictions in materials balances, blending conditions, production capacities and market. The changes in total profit resulting from the different investment alternatives, together with investment and fixed costs, were used in a series of investment analyses. The application has proved to be very successful and the results come very near to what was expected."

Copper remains one of the most sought-after metals in the industry. Tennantite (Cu12As4S13) and tetrahedrite (Cu12Sb4S13) that occur in pyrite copper, copper-zinc and polymetallic ores are an additional reserve for increasing technological parameters of flotation. Pyrite mass (85% and more) has similar flotation properties to other sulfide minerals, and imperfection of reagent regime is a common problem that occurs during quality copper concentrate processing. Due to tennantite's and chalcopyrite's differences in flotation properties with butyl xanthate at pH > 10, tennantite often reports to the flotation tails. Hight alkalinity of the medium increases the oxidation level of sulfide minerals, thus increasing the concentration of S2O3 2-, SO3 2- SO4 2-. At processing facilities in the Russian Federation, the concentration of thiosulfate ions in pulp is in the range of 0.5 to 1.5 g/l and higher, which leads to a decrease in flotation activity of the tennantite. The effect of butyl xanthate (as standard), thionocarbamate, dithiophosphate and M-TF (a mixture of dithiophosphate and thionocarbamate) on monomineral (tennantite and pyrite) flotation in the presence of sodium thiosulfate was studied. The variable parameters of the "thiosulfate-collector" flotation complex were thiosulfate concentration (100-900); pH (8-12,5). The scientific methods included contact angle for hydration assessment; TEM for surface studies; UV spectroscopy and iodometric titration for solubility control. Comprehensive studies have established a connection between the concentration of thiosulfate ions and tennantite flotation selectivity. Flotation activity of tennantite is higher at pH 8 with a thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l. Pyrite remains active with butyl xanthate under the same conditions. TEM images of the surface films of the collectors on pyrite were acquired at pH 8. The MTF provides the biggest difference in adsorption, wettability and flotation activity between tennantite and pyrite at pH 8 and thiosulfate concentration under 300 mg/l, in comparison with butyl xanthate. The results of the research will be applied to improve selective reagent regimes of tennantite minerals flotation. In general all the arguments, raised by Messrs Cooke, Martus and Johnston in favour of extending the scope of the new assistance scheme can be accepted as sound.

The productivity indices of the Republic of South Africa compare poorly with those of its competitors in the rest of the world. The theory of productivity is relatively simple, and various models are available to demonstrate this. The problem is how to apply the theory in practice and to convert it into a practical management system that will guarantee results. The secret lies in a management approach that aims at a continuous improvement in achievement and that involves the entire work force down to the lowest level in the process. Good management systems ensuring the necessary attention to, among others, management by objectives, finance, personnel, maintenance, planning, and control are a prerequisite for continued improvement and staff involvement. The net result of such an approach is described by the term performance management, which encompasses the total integration of al a company's management systems.

"The ore deposits of the Zambian Copperbelt occur in sedimentary strata that have been subjected to relatively mild, flexure-type folding. Unrolling serves to reconstruct the original depositional geometry of the folded sedimentary strata and is in common usage on the Copperbelt both for geological analysis of drill hole data and in routine ore reserve estimation.A computerized method of unrolling was introduced at Roan Consolidated Mines in 1969 based on a standard contouring program. A contour map of the geological structure is drawn from a regular grid of elevations, interpolated from the original, irregularly-spaced intersections. Unrolling is performed across this grid, perpendicular to one or two axes specified by the geologist. Each intersection is unrolled independently, and the new co-ordinates are subsequently processed to produce unrolled maps.The technique has been used successfully at RCM over the last two years in both the estimation of ore reserves and exploration planning."

In 1970 it was decided to build a large new plant at the Chingola Division of N.C.C.M., Ltd., to treat concentrator tailings and leach residues with a low copper content by a leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning process. In order to assist in the establishment of the design parameters for the new plant, and to study the interaction of this plant with the existing leach-electrowinning plant, mathematical models, formulated as linear programs, have been developed and used extensively. The paper outlines the metallurgy of the plants and describes briefly the way in which the models have been formulated and used. The formulation involved the use of separable programming to form the products of some variables.

E. H. D. Carman: The results achieved at Buffelsfontein Gold Mining Company Limited are very encouraging and it seems certain that as far as the conventional uranium recovery process is concerned solvent extraction must entirely supplant the old resin ion exchange process. The operational costs given by Mr Meyburgh indicate that the chief cost items in solvent extraction are reagents. In other words 38.4 per cent of the operational cost at Buffelsfontein is due to the replacement of the organics lost from the plant. It is reported from a wide field of experience that loss, particularly of amine, is a direct function both of the quantity and nature of finely divided suspended solids in the pregnant solution and the extent to which the design of the mixers causes the formation of secondary dispersions which do not easily separate in the settler. There is in addition the unavoidable loss of amine due to its solubility in the aqueous solution which is thought to be about 4 p.p.m. In order to minimise solvent losses therefore, efficient clarification at the head of the solvent extraction plant would appear to be a most important requirement. For this reason the newly erected plant at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited has two Funda Pressure Filters each with a filtering area of 540 sq. ft. which are together designed to handle up to 440 g.p.m. of filtrate. This plant has not yet been commissioned but preliminary testing indicates that suspended solids in the sub micron size range which do not settle even on protracted standing of the solution, will rapidly blind the clarifiers. This should not affect solution clarity but frequent backwashing adds to the cost of precoating. The difficulty was countered in the laboratory with continuous additions of filter aid in addition to the precoat but, as Table 11shows, cost of filter aid is high and its use will have to be optimized against organic losses due to less efficient clarification. This will need much careful observation over a relatively long period of time. Costs shown in Table 11 are based on Mr Meyburgh's figures adjusted to probable conditions at West Driefontein Gold Mining Company Limited. The assumption based on small scale testing is that it will cost 5.2c/ton in filter aid to clarify filtrate to a level of about 5 p.p.m. of suspended solids, in order to restrict the amine loss to 10 p.p.m. which is likely to be equivalent to an entrained organic loss worth approximately only 2.6 cents per ton. Of course poor clarification as mentioned earlier is only one of two or even more causes of organic losses and it seems obvious on the above basis that the operation and economics of pressure clarification will need close investigation. A second important consideration at West Driefontein has been the design of the pump-mixers which must perform the dual function of phase mixing and providing the necessary hydraulic gradient for counter current flow of the two phases. "In order to be able to map the variation in the concentration of elements in soils, it is necessary to sample at intervals that will give adequate coverage of the area and will allow determination of the rate of fluctuation of concentration with distance in any environment. This rate of fluctuation with distance can be referred to as the continuity of concentration.The continuity of concentration in soils varies according to the chemical characteristics of the element being considered, the underlying rock type or orebody and in response to the dispersion processes that operated during soil formation. Within any environment there is a maximum distance between sampling points within which adjacent sample values are related. This distance, the critical sampling interval, can be determined by means of a correlograrm.Where the sampling grid has been chosen to provide an adequate coverage over unmineralized rock, adjacent samples being related, anomalies may be missed if the element continuity in the anomaly is less than in the background. Results show that a knowledge of the critical sampling interval of the environment being examined may used to select a more efficient sampling pattern for a geochemical survey."

Chalcopyrite represents the most important copper resource and is currently mainly exploited using pyrometallurgy. Bioleaching is an environmental-friendly and economic alternative to conventional mineral processing technologies. The technical feasibility of stirred tank reactor bioleaching of copper ore concentrates using acidophilic iron-/sulfur-oxidising bacteria is proven, however, often incomplete due to inefficient chalcopyrite dissolution. A decoupling of bacterial growth from bioleaching activity in one bioreactor by adjusting appropriate temperatures for both process steps allows for almost complete chalcopyrite dissolution. Separation of copper and recovery of other metals from the PLS was possible by implementation of different biological and chemical techniques. The Ferredox process has been proposed to treat limonitic laterite ores for cobalt and nickel recovery by means of anaerobic reductive dissolution with autotrophic, acidophilic bacteria. As a modification, aerobic reductive dissolution of laterites with acidophilic bacteria has shown economic and environmental advantages over anaerobic reductive dissolution. The reductive bioleaching technology has the potential to increase metal recovery in existing mines, and transform unexploited ores and limonite stockpiles into valuable resources. In South Africa, diamonds are mined predominantly in rural areas. Kimberlitic diamonds dominate in Limpopo and the Northern Cape Provinces whereas alluvial diamonds are mainly sourced from the North West and Northern Cape Provinces. There are a few large and medium sized diamond companies (De Beers, Petra Diamonds, Trans Hex, Rockwell and Alexkor). There are many smaller companies involved in diamond mining, mostly alluvial diamond mines. The nature of alluvial diamond deposits is that they are aerially more extensive and thus their surface impacts are more pervasive: The recent downturn in diamond prices has resulted in the sudden cessation of mining at many small and medium diamond operations. The South African Mining Charter requires all mines, including diamond mines, to subscribe' to .the following empowerment objectives:

The growing market demand for lithium is mainly due to its use in the manufacture of batteries for electric or hybrid vehicles and portable equipment (smartphones, tablets, power tools, notebooks, etc.). Currently there is great interest in finding new sources of lithium and technologies for its utilisation. Li-S batteries have received attention due to their theoretically high specific energy density, which is 3 to 5 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. Unlike Li-ion batteries, of which the main raw materials are lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, the main raw material for Li-S batteries is lithium chloride. The anode used in Li-S batteries is metallic lithium, produced by a molten lithium chloride electrolysis process. The extraction of lithium from pegmatites such as spodumene, previously abandoned in the 1990s for being uneconomical, has become attractive due to the increase in prices as well as the need for greater lithium purity of products made from lithium-bearing minerals. The main methods used for lithium recovery from spodumene ore include the sulfuric acid process, the alkaline process (lime or limestone as raw material) and the chlorination roasting process. Thermodynamic modelling using HSC software 5.1 was conducted to predict different reactions that could occur during chlorination roasting of the spodumene/MgCl2+CaCl2 system. Lithium extraction from the solid obtained after the chlorination roasting was also investigated. The results of thermodynamic analysis provided a better understanding of the chlorination roasting process for lithium extraction. Metallurgical tests with a mass ratio of 1:6 (spodumene:chlorides) and molar ratio of 2:1 (MgCl2:CaCl2) allowed over 95% recovery of the lithium contained in the spodumene concentrate.
