By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 9 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, whereupon it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and Platinum Group Metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

"Although the first large-scale application of copper recovery by solvent extraction (SX) took place in Zambia in the early 1970s, it is only in the last decade that this technology has become widely employed in this part of the world and is now a mainstay unit operation in most copper hydrometallurgical flowsheets. The mineralogy of the ores in the African Copper Belt, and hence the characteristics of the African leach liquors, differ significantly from those in Chile and the south-western USA, where copper SX has had a long and successful history. These differences provide operators, metallurgists, reagent vendors and engineers with many challenges: new approaches are needed to adapt this technology for successful implementation in this region. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges and opportunities presented by these flowsheets. INTRODUCTION Following the success of the Rancher’s Bluebird and Bagdad solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX–EW) operations in Arizona in the late 1960s, the Tailings Leach Plant at Chingola, Zambia became the first large-scale copper SX plant in the world, commissioned in 1974. Despite the equipment design now being outdated, this plant still continues to operate successfully, indicating the versatility and adaptability of this technology. Today, there are some 75 copper SX operations worldwide with cathode production above 10 kt/a. The top ten producers currently account for some 40% of the global 4.3 Mt/a SX–EW copper production. South America (predominantly Chile and Peru) is the largest copper cathode-producing region, with annual production of some 2 Mt. The Central African Copper Belt (Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)) is second, with cathode production of 1.2 Mt/a and North America (USA and Mexico) third, producing close to 0.8 Mt/a Cu (Cytec data, 2014). The remaining 0.35 Mt/a comes from all other regions combined (referred to as “Rest-of-World”). Current and future operations in Zambia and the DRC are summarised in Figure 1. The industry in this region is characterised by a large number of small (3 to 20 kt/a) plants, mainly Chinese-owned, and a few very large (>200 kt/a) operations, owned by major multinational corporations. This paper examines typical operating practice in the African Copper Belt, discusses the differences compared with other parts of the world and looks at some of the challenges presented by the conditions, as well as innovations in flowsheets, reagents and operating conditions that have been introduced in these circuits."

Ticor South Africa is currently involved in the mining and processing of a heavy mineral oredeposit at Hillendale Mine on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast. The orebody is characterized by a high ultra fine fraction (-45µm) that has a variable rheological behaviour when subjected to shear and hydration. Experience at Hillendale has shown that the ultra fine mineral tailings are sensitive to shear history in terms of shear intensity and shear duration as well as hydration history. This phenomenon expresses itself right through the primary beneficiation process influencing the mineral separation, but is especially prevalent on the residue disposal i.e. slurry transport and deposition on the tailings impoundment. Tube viscometer test work was conducted on the flocculated fine tailings that indicated that there was a change in rheology as a result of shear. This paper presents the results of the on-site test work conducted at the mine to measure the rheology at various stages in the process.

Extensive field studies have been carried out to investigate the pillar fire problems in one coal mine in India. A Thermal IR gun and a Thermovision camera have been employed for thermal scanning to assess the state of heating in selected pillars. Special sampling set-ups have been designed to collect gas samples from the holes drilled into the selected pillars and the multigas detector is used to analyse the composition of samples in situ. In order to predict the spontaneous heating in coal pillars, different gas ratios have been calculated and it has been observed that some of the established gas ratios, viz. Graham?s ratio, Young?s ratio etc. have resulted in negative values in samples containing high amounts of methane. The modified gas ratios have been proposed which will be useful for predicting the pillar fires. These ratios may also be used for assessing the condition of fires in sealed-off areas.

The assessment of overall modulus (or stiffness) of a fractured weak to moderately strong rock mass is a key parameter in the design of civil engineering works in these materials. It also provides the highest level of uncertainty due to scale effects, anisotropy and the influence of joint frequency and joint stiffness. Using the example of the Melbourne Mudstone, this paper compares approaches using empirical rules based on intact rock strength, laboratory testing, in situ field testing, semi-quantitative assessment techniques based on rock mass classification and back analyses. L'évaluation du module (ou rigidité) global d’une masse rocheuse faible et fissurée a modérément forte est un paramètre principal dans la conception des travaux du génie civil dans ces types de matériaux. Elle fournit également le niveau le plus élevé d'incertitude due aux effets d’échelle, à l'anisotropie et à l'influence de la fréquence et de la rigidité des joints rocheux. En utilisant l'exemple du schiste de Melbourne, cet article compare des approches empiriques basées sur la force intacte de La roche, les essais expérimentaux au laboratoire, les essais sur site, les techniques semi-quantitatives d'évaluation basées sur la classification de la masse rocheuse et les analyses en retour. Driefontein Consolidated Limited has a proud history in the South African gold mining industry dating back to March 1945 with the formation of the West Driefontein Gold Mining Company. The reclamation gold plant at West Driefontein was originally built as a uranium recovery plant in 1970. With the collapse of the uranium oxide yellow cake market, the uranium plant was closed in 1988and successfully converted into a gold plant, recovering gold from repulped tailings dams1. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant utilized milling, leaching, conventional rotary vacuum filtration and cementation to recover the gold at a rate of 200,000 dry tons per month. The No. 1 tailings dam (at a head grade of 0.8 Au g/t) began to near the end of its life during 1996, and the next slimes dams to be treated, the No. 2tailings dam (at a lower head grade of 0.56 Au g/t) was found too marginal for reprocessing using the filtration technology. Alternate technologies were investigated, particularly the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant based on the Anglo-American Corporation (AAC) pump-cell technology at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company?s East gold plant which was operating profitably at lower head grades2. The AAC pump-cell technology is based on the carousel mode of operation2. The suitability of CIP technology for the West Driefontein Reclaim plant was investigated using a pilot plant pump-cell supplied by Kemix The data gathered were utilized in sizing a full scale AAC pump-cell plant. This plant was motivated, built and commissioned on the 22nd of November 1996. Incorporating 6 eighty cubic metre AAC pump-cells. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant initially treated repulped slimes dam material. A subsequent change of feed material to current arisings (from the main gold plant) occurred in1997 in order to convert mills for waste rock treatment. Currently the reclaim plant treats a combination of current arisings and waste rock (milled at the reclaim site). The new CIP plant replaced twenty-seven rotary vacuum filters. A comparison between the filters and CIP in terms of operating costs was undertaken, as well as a performance analysis of the CIP plant to determine its flexibility in terms of variation of the throughput, pulp density, gold input, leaching efficiency prior to CIP, and the rate of carbon movement.

"Circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) combustion technology has been around for over 40 years, but over the last 6 years it has been commercially demonstrated at the 500 MWe scale at the Lagisza plant located in Bedzin, Poland. The CFB at the Lagisza plant has unique first-of-a-kind design features, such as vertical-tube supercritical steam technology and a lowtemperature flue-gas heat extraction that allows the plant to achieve high plant efficiencies of over 43% (net lower heating value). Another unusual feature for a coal power plant is that this plant meets all its atmospheric emission permit levels without any post-combustion de-NOx or de-SOx equipment such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) or flue-gas desulphurization (FGD).CFB clean coal power technology is entering the utility power sector just in time to help deal with declining quality in internationally traded coals and to promote the large-scale use of economic, low-quality domestic fuels. Owing to the very attractive price discounts, growing supplies of low-quality Indonesian coals are outpacing the supply of high-quality Australian, Russian, and US coals. In Germany and Turkey, the use of domestic lignites for power production provides a secure and economic energy solution while creating domestic jobs.Conventional pulverized coal (PC) boilers will have trouble accepting these off-specification coals because of their narrow fuel specifications; they typically call for heating values above 5500 kcal/kg. This limitation is not an issue for CFB technology because of its ability to burn the worst and best of coals with heating values ranging from 3900 to 8000 kcal/kg.This paper provides an outlook for future coal supply, quality, and price, as well as a review of the technical and economic benefits of CFB technology firing low-quality fuels for utility power generation."

Following on the design of good mining layouts and regional support systems, and the implementation of sound strata control practices, stope support is the ultimate strategy to combat the hazards of rockfalls and rockbursts. The primary function of stope support in intermediate and deep level mines is to stabilize the rock mass immediately surrounding stoping excavations, that is, the zone of fractured rock which behaves in elastically around stopes. Support design is a process resulting in a support system which is both practical and meets or exceeds by a factor of safety the requirements for a particular geotechnical environment. The aim of this project was to design a support system, which accommodates the factors of rockfalls and rockbursts. The pack support unit must be easily handled, less costly and can be used in stopes without any significant convergence. The project tested the structural stability of packs to their expected deformation, in order to design a height to width ratio for stopes where little convergence is expected.

Caving of the second lift of the E26 orebody at Northparkes Mines was monitored with a comprehensive package of instrumentation, including an ISS seismic monitoring system. Seismicity was collected by an array of 19 triaxial accelerometers and 9 uniaxial geophones, giving a high quality seismic data set. The seismic response to block caving at Northparkes has been divided into two papers. The first paper focuses on the seismicity during undercutting. The second paper deals primarily with the seismicity during cave propagation during initial cave production. In this paper, traditional seismic monitoring concepts are applied to seismicity during cave mining. More than 40 000 seismic events were recorded during cave undercutting between February and January 2004. Events up to local magnitude +1.3 were recorded near the mine during undercutting, with event rates of up to 500 per day. Analysis of frequency-magnitude distributions, S-wave to P-wave energy, and temporal variations in event magnitude all gave insight into the seismicity recorded. In addition, a new technique, called apparent stress time history, was shown to be sensitive to stress change from undercut blasting, and useful to identify significant periods during cave development. A significant difference was identified between the cave back location and the halo of seismic events above the cave. Throughout the undercutting, the a seismic zone of loosening was typically 50 to 70 metres in vertical thickness. Based on the seismicity, a stress driven rock mass failure model is proposed. Early in the undercutting, seismicity and movements in the seismogenic zone were directly triggered by stress change from undercutting. Towards the end of undercutting, seismicity was virtually uncorrelated with undercut blasting, and likely due to the onset of cave initiation.

Wireless sensor networks and wireless communication systems have become indispensable in underground mines. Wireless sensor networks are being used for better real-time data acquisition from ground monitoring devices, gas sensors, and mining equipment, whereas wireless communication systems are needed for locating and communicating with workers. Conventional methods like wireline communication have proved to be ineffective in the event of mine hazards such as roof falls, fires etc. Before implementation of any wireless system, the variable path loss indices for different workplaces should be determined. This helps in better signal reception and sensor node localization, and also improves the method by which miners carrying the wireless devices are tracked. This paper proposes a novel method for determining the parameters of a suitable radio propagation model, which is illustrated with the results of a practical experiment carried out in an underground coal mine in southern India. The path loss indices, along with other essential parameters for accurate localization, have been determined using the XBee modules and ZigBee protocol at 2.4 GHz frequency.

This paper illustrates the importance of failure mechanisms identification in order to define properly how to manage the residual risk. Des risques d’instabilités de surface peuvent persister, notamment lorsque des vides résiduels existent au sein des travaux souterrains. L’article illustre l’importance que présente la nature des mécanismes de rupture potentiels dans le choix des mesures compensatoires à adopter pour gérer le risque résiduel à long terme. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: In Frankreich stellt sich derzeit das Problem der definitiven Schliessung des meisten Bergwerke. In manchen fällen ist die Stabilität der Oberfläche nicht garantiert, speziell wenn unter Tage nicht verfüllte Hohlräume verblieben sind. Dieser Bericht zeigt die Wichtigkeit, bei der Auswahl geeigneter Langzeit-Risikomanagementmethoden, der verschiedenen Mechanismen mit denen ein eventueller Bruch an die Tagesoberfläche geraten kann.

Without a steady and increasing supply of electricity development of the continent is likely to be constrained. The inventory of solar, wind, hydrothermal, geothermal and biomass resources will probably provide sources of energy for the future The parallels between extraction of natural resources in the minerals industry and the green energy industry is striking, and the well-established project development process in the minerals industry provides an ideal and useful template for comparing the establishment and development of green energy projects. The potential levels of power generation and carbon savings are described.

Primary lead production using the lead blast furnace in conventional practice is carried out using sinter feed. At YMG, China, the sinter plant has been replaced with a lead ISASMELT furnace. The ISASMELT furnace produces lead bullion plus a high-lead slag, which is cast into lumps to provide a suitable feed for the blast furnace. In the present study the relative microstructures and reduction characteristics of industrial lead sinters and synthetic ISASMELT slag in CO/CO2 gas mixtures have been measured and compared. The microstructure and property changes, and the mechanisms of reduction in each case are examined and discussed. The results of the study are used to explain the successful implementation of cast slag feed in commercial ISASMELT- lead blast furnace practice. More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluorides1,2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02.SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F.XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo¬dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

"Owing to the corrosiveness of the untreated brackish cooling water typically used for steel mills (and other environments), it is important to treat the water and monitor corrosion in such systems. Generally, corrosion rates are monitored with corrosion probes inserted into a pipeline or vessel. This has been standard practice for many years, and is widely accepted in industry. Typically, two kinds of probes are used - electrical resistance and linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes.In this study, the effectiveness and accuracy of the LPR technique was evaluated by comparing the electrochemical measurements with the results of mass loss tests using corrosion coupons. The corrosivity of the environment, a synthetic brackish water, was varied by varying the calcium hardness and alkalinity, and to simulate actual plant conditions temperatures of 35°C and 45°C were used. In addition to the corrosion rate measurements, the iron concentration was measured, as well as the imbalance from the probe.The corrosion rates obtained by LPR were from 57% lower to 385%higher than those from the immersion tests. Most probe measurements were higher than the immersion results, and 50% of the probe results were50% or more higher than the immersion results. The best correspondence between the two methods was obtained at low calcium levels, except for one measurement that was 93% higher than the coupon results. There was no clear correlation between parameters such as temperature and total alkalinity and the difference between the results. It would therefore appear that LPR measurements can differ significantly from immersion results, and LPR results should therefore be used with caution in industrial applications."

Pre-reduction of chromite outside the submerged-arc furnace (SAF) can significantly lower the specific power consumption in the SAF process. Conventional processes for the pre-reduction of the ore operate at relatively high temperatures, at 1400-1500°C. It is possible to enhance the rate of reduction at low temperatures by optimizing the flow rate of inert gas over the reaction site. The influence of the flow rate of inert gas on the rate of reduction of chromite ore was investigated. The rate of reduction initially decreased wit the flow rate of the gas. It increased subsequently at higher flow rates to be followed by a decrease again. There was an optimum flow rate at which maximum reduction could be obtained. It was possible to achieve high levels of reduction at 1200°C by optimising the flow rate of the gas. The degree of reduction obtained was comparable to that obtained at 1400-1500°C, by conventional process routes.

Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The purpose of this project was to identify constraints that could occur in the current sub-decline shaft at Turffontein Shaft should an increase in production take place. Particular attention was to be paid to the transportation of men and materials and to the broken rock and ventilation capacity of the shaft. This project is an in-depth evaluation of the logistic capacity of the sub-decline system at Turffontein Shaft in order to determine by how much production can be increased in this area to replace tonnages from the vertical shaft area, where ore reserves are rapidly becoming depleted.

The embrittlement of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by hydrogen dosing at elevated temperature has been investigated. Metal coupons were subjected to isothermal treatments in a partial hydrogen atmosphere in the temperature range from 650ºC?950ºC and the degree of embrittlement after treatment was determined by drop-weight impact testing. Embrittlement was found to be inversely related to reaction temperature as a result of the combined effects of greater hydrogen absorption and titanium hydride precipitation at the lower isothermal temperatures. "Cobre Las Cruces mine extracts copper minerals from a VMS deposit located in the well-known Iberian Pyrite Belt (IPB). As an open pit, it is distinguished geologically from other IPB mines by the presence of around 150 m of Tertiary soft marls, known locally as the Guadalquivir Blue Marls, followed by a regionally important aquifer. Below the marls and aquifer the mineralization is hosted by rocks typical of the Palaeozoic within the IPB, comprising gossan, tuffs, slates, and sulphides.This combination of a substantially soft rock and more competent, older (but still occasionally problematic) Palaeozoic lithologies constitutes a unique geological framework and presents substantial challenges in maintenance of slope stability, and therefore operational safety, at the mine site. This paper describes the fundamental design, excavation, and monitoring measures implemented at the mine to maintain safe production, and the lessons learnt during the mine development. IntroductionAs a modern Spanish mine, Las Cruces is committed to the use of best available technology and practices with the aim of guaranteeing the production of ore in a safe environment. From a practical perspective, this implies the realization of a high quality pit design, ongoing geotechnical mapping of exposed slopes to ensure conformity with design, and use of leading geotechnical surveillance technology to complement visual observations. The focus of this article is to illustrate how, at a mine site with potentially problematic soil/rock conditions, multiple advanced techniques employed from design stage analysis through to final pit configuration and vigilance, were combined to achieve an overall control of the ground conditions. In Figure 1 the layout of the pit is shown, illustrating development at the beginning of 2015."

A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0.
