This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United states was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United states Department of the Interior. This paper is a continuation of a series made in cooperation with the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Council (CRC), Inc. The first of this series of reports presented data on motor gaso1ines sold during the winter of 1935-36, and succeeding reports described motor gasolines sold during the summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.3/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. The Pittsburgh carbonization laboratory of the Bureau of Mines has determined the expansion or contraction of more than 300 coking coals in a modified Bethlehem-type sole-heated expansion tester. Information on the actions of coals or blends of coals when coked is extremely valuable to operators of commercial-scale coke ovens. Coals that expand abnormally or beyond expectations can cause extensive damage to coke ovens and result in costly shutdowns and repairs. Although test results for many of the coals have been given in various Bureau of Mines publications, considerable information was not published. Thus, it is the purpose of this report to furnish coal operators and the coking industry with a current appraisal of the expanding properties of all coals tested by the Bureau before September 1, 1958. These data should be useful in the normal long range planning of coal and coke production and will be essential if the demand for coking coals increases abnormally or when reserves of higher grade coals are depleted.

"INTRODUCTION The first important discovery of petroleum in New Mexico was near Dayton, Eddy County, where the Brown well was drilled in 1909, and small quantities of oil were produced. In 1911 and 1912 wells were drilled in McKinley County, but commercial production did not begin until the discovery of the Hogback field, San Juan County, in 1922. The discovery well in the Artesia field, Eddy County, drilled in 1923, gave impetus to active drilling in many areas. Since 1924 New Mexico has produced petroleum in commercial quantities and since 1930 the State has joined the ranks of the big produc¬ing States, being sixth or seventh in total production in recent years.Production by years. 1924 to 1940, inclusive, taken from annual figures in Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. The total production shown is 274,331,000 barrels. Andreas 3/ has published production figures for the year 1940 and a resume of all production to the end of 1940. Data from his report are presented in table 2 for each field sampled. The cumulative production, as given by Andreas, is 270,618,575 barrels."

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions4 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Knott County is one of the smaller coal-producing areas in the Eastern Kentucky coal field. It contains numerous coal beds, many too thin to support mining over a wide area, Coal produced in the county is from a few rail-shipping operations and many small truck mines. Many smaller mines are working beds whose exact location in the coal-bearing strata is uncertain. Samples were collected from 11 different coal beds, of which the Fire Clay, Hindman, Upper Elkhorn No. 3, and Flag are the most import ant from a product ion standpoint. Known reserves in the Hindman bed. are very limited, and almost the entire production from this bed is gathered from two comparatively, large rail-shipping mines in addition to the four principal beds, samples were taken in the Francis, Haddix, Fire Clay Rider, Whitesburg, Amburgy, Upper horn No. 2, and Upper Elkhorn No. I .beds. Figure 1 is a typical section of the strata, showing the more important coal beds and. readily identifying their location with respect to each other. The bed names as shown are particularly important because of the local tendency to assign several names to the same bed. Analytical studies of formation waters are widely used by the petroleum industry as an aid in solving problems such as identifying intrusive waters , corrosion studies , treating injection water , and choosing open or closed water- injection systems . The solution of a problem is often simplified when reliable analyses of the waters under consideration have been made previously . Chemical analyses and electrical resistivity measurements are presented on 267 samples from 74 fields in south Arkansas , and 199 samples from 80 fields in north Louisiana .

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. It presents analytical data for 4,857 samples, representing the products of 103 companies. The samples were collected during June, July, and August 1955. As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is given on page 5.

The thickness of the coal seam is one of the more important items influencing the productivity and general overall efficiency of operation of a coal mine. The average thickness of coal seams mined in the United States has changed very little in the past 40 years. The first measurement of thickness of bituminous coal and lignite seams was made for 1920, when the average thickness was 5.3 feet.2 The average thickness for later years was as follows: 1945, 5.4 feet; 1950, 5.3 feet; 1955, 5.2 feet; 1960, 5.3 feet; and 1965, 5.2 feet.3 Table 1 includes data on number and production of bituminous coal and lignite mines classified by 1-foot intervals of seam thickness mined in 1920, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, and 1965. Though bituminous coal and lignite are mined today from seams of exceedingly variable thickness--less than 2 feet to more than 50 feet--a large majority of the production, 62 percent in 1965, came from seams 3 to 6 feet thick. This is not surprising since the coal seam of moderate thickness presents the least mining difficulties.

[In a certain application it was necessary to compute the incomplete beta function, ß(1/2, p, q), for a certain set of values of p and q. Since the set of p and q values was much more finely spaced than those in any published tables, the authors have decided to make their results available in this report. In connection with this application, the function ß(1/2, p, q) was needed at various points in the p, q plane at intervals of 0.05, 0.05 p = 2q < 10.00. Fletcher, Miller, and Rosenhead3/ state that the only tables available in the desired range are those of Pearson.4/ However, the interval used by Pearson was not small enough for the present application. For this reason, it was decided to calculate the function ß(1/2, p, q) for p = q = 0.05 (0.05) 10.00. This table is published because of the fundamental importance in mathematical analysis of the incomplete beta function.]

This report presents all available 900 ° C BM- AGA carbonization and related data for coals from the principal beds of the southwest Virginia field in a form which permits ready comparison of product yields and properties of coals and cokes . Thirty- one channel samples from Buchanan , Dickenson , Russell , Tazewell , and Wise Counties were carbonized at 900 ° C in an 18 - inch - diameter retort . Blending properties of 10 of the coals were studied , and expansion of most of the coals and blends was measured in the Bureau of Mines sole - heated oven . Ash Most of the samples were chemically suitable for metallurgical use in coking blends , and their coking properties generally were satisfactory . content exceeded 10 percent in only three samples , and none of the coals contained more than 1.5 percent sulfur . Dry , mineral - matter - free fixed - carbon content of the coals ranged from 62.1 to 77.5 percent . Expansion behavior varied widely , ranging from 16.8 percent expansion to 27.6 percent contraction .

A summary of the characteristics of motor gasoline for the summer 1951 is presented in table 1, and for comparison, a similar summary for the summer 1950 is shown in table 2. Trends of some of the more important characteristics over a period of years are shown in figures 1 and 2. As indicated, octane numbers of motor gasolines sold in the United states decreased approximately one-half to one octane unit from the record levels attained during the winter of 1950-51 and are a little below the octane numbers of summer 1950. However, average vapor pressures of the summer gasolines did not change, and certain distillation temperatures varied only slightly from those of the year before.

A degasification experiment was conducted in a Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed mine in Virginia. It involved (1) drilling holes in the coalbed in the out- side headings of a set of five being developed in virgin area, and (2) conducting a methane emission rate study as mining progressed and additional holes were drilled. Degasification from all drill holes except the longest in each of the outside headings and the first three drilled (excluding the in-situ pressure hole), was erratic and inconsequential in methane emission rates. The two longest holes liberated 66 and 79 cfm of methane, which is significant for the coalbed, but such quantity lasted a relatively short time; the first three were uniform but low in methane emission.

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. Ramani of The Pennsylvania State University.The Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust is funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute Program. This report presents experimental work conducted on a number of coals found within the boundaries of the Missouri River Basin, which were, to an extent, a selection of coals typical of that region. In the min, the laboratory work falls into three general classifications: (1) Laboratory distillation assay of coal to establish yields on carbonization; (2) chemical analyses of the coal samples before drying or carbonization; and (3) chemical analyses of the products of carbonization. It will be seen in the following discussion that these data derived from the small-scale laboratory apparatus are useful in predicting yields from pilot plants or industrial units. Coal is produced in about 48 general areas or mining fields in the Western States, of which approximately 18 fall within the limits of the Missouri Basin.3/ Beginning with the Northern Colorado field, through the Central and Western Wyoming fields, the coal is principally bituminous and subbituminous rank. The western Montana coals are also of these ranks. Progressing northeast from central Wyoming the coal decreases in rank, as shown by the subbituminous C coals of the Gillette field in northern Wyoming and the lignites of eastern Montana and North Dakota.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 295 natural gas samples from 18 States collected during calendar year 1963 as part of a continuous survey of the United States for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Five previous publications have been made to present the results of 5,998 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity , prior to 1963. The first three , Bulletin 486,5 Bulletin 576,6 and Bulletin 617,7/ contain analyses and source data on 5,214 gas samples collected from 1917 to January 1 , 1961. The fourth and fifth publications , which are published as Information Circulars , supplement the three Bulletins and contain 784 analyses of samples collected during 1961 and 1962. The present Information Circular is the third annual publication supplementing the three Bulletins .

A guide to the utilization and development of extensions and modifications to the APL Mine-electrical-system Load-flow Program is presented. These modifications include the development of algorithms to minimize computational operations within the iterative-solution techniques, as well as minimization of the number of required iterations. Extensions to the load-flow program include the development of algorithms for the calculation of balanced faults, simplified specification of fault parameters, optional inclusion of pre-fault currents, and an alternate-solution technique.
