The Bureau of Mines made electrorefining tests in inert-atmosphere, molten salt cells to develop methods for the preparation of high-purity molybdenum. Seven of the electrolytes investigated were suitable for the preparation of refined metal. The electrolytes were composed of molybdenum chloride in alkali chlorides or mixtures of alkali and alkaline-earth chlorides. An electrolyte composed of potassium chloride and potassium hexachloro-molybdate was selected for a larger scale, more detailed study on the basis of its ease of preparation, its ability to retain the molybdenum salt, and the type of deposits obtained. High-purity molybdenum in the 99.99-percent-purity range was successfully prepared as dense plate up to 80 mils thick and as dendritic crystals. The temperature of electrolysis and the current density were major factors in determining whether plate or dendritic crystals of molybdenum were obtained.

The Bureau of Mines has developed several methods for extracting tantalum and columbium (niobium) and the rare-earth compounds from ores and concentrates. A cooperative agreement was made by the Bureau with Porter Bros. Corporation of Idaho to process 200 pounds of its euxenite concentrate by methods that had been developed at the Albany, Oreg., Metallurgy Research Center. The euxenite concentrate was processed to extract and purify the valuable metals by chlorination, solvent extraction, and hydrometallurgical techniques. Chlorination was used to convert the valuable constituents into chlorides and to partly separate them. Solvent extraction techniques were used to separate the tantalum from the columbium. The rare-earth and uranium compounds were purified by hydrometallurgical methods.

The chlorination of Cr₂ 03 (chromic oxide ) in the presence of carbon with CC14 (carbon tetrachloride ) and COCl2 (phosgene ) chlorinating agents was investigated by employing the radioactive tracer carbon By tagging carbon mixed with Cr₂ 0з , the chlorination reaction was evaluated in terms of the competitive reaction of the elemental carbon and the carbon contained by the chlorinating agent . A unique gas - analysis train was used to separate the chlorination product gases ; CO , CO₂ , and COC12 . The C¹ activity of the gases was determined and used to calculate the reactivity of each source of carbon . Reactivities were determined for the temperature range from 600 ° to 900 ° C. The results of the investigation show that each source of carbon reacts significantly with the Cr2 03 and that the reactivity of each form of carbon depends on the reaction temperature , and each form is independent of the other . Radioisotope and gas - analysis techniques are discussed and a description of the experimental apparatus is given .

This paper summarizes the results of a research project whose goal was to provide the Australian coal industry with a chain pillar design methodology readily usable by colliery staff. The project was primarily funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program and further supported by several Australian longwall operations. The starting point or basis of the project was the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS) methodology. ALPS was chosen because of its operational focus; it uses tailgate performance as the determining chain pillar design criterion rather than simply pillar stability. Furthermore, ALPS recognizes that several geotechnical and design factors, including (but not limited to) chain pillar stability, affect that performance. There are some geotechnical and mine layout differences between United States and Australian coal fields that required investigation and, therefore, calibration before the full benefits offered by the ALPS methodology could be realized in Australia. Ultimately, case history data were collected from 19 longwall mines representing approximately 60% of all Australian longwall operations. In addition, six monitoring sites incorporated an array of hydraulic stress cells to measure the change in vertical stress throughout the various phases of the longwall extraction cycle. The sites also incorporated extensometers to monitor roof and rib performance in response to the retreating longwallface. The study found strong relationships between the tailgate stability factor, the Coal Mine Roof Rating, and the installed level of primary support. The final outcome of the project is a chain pillar design methodology called Analysis of Longwall Tailgate Serviceability (ALTS). Guidelines for using ALTS are provided.

Since 1991 the Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC formerly part of the U. S. Bureau of Mines) has been tapping u valuable resource-researchers have recorded extensive interviews will, 30 individuals who are recognized as experts in the area of mine emergency response. These veterans related stories and observations from events experienced during as many as 47 years of response activities. Overall, the response veterans averaged 29 years of mine emergency response experience and 35 years mining experience. Individuals [ ] interviewed included representatives from mining companies, the UMWA and state and federal government agencies. This information was gathered so dial it could he provided to today's miners and to tomorrow's emergency response personnel. It is hoped the collective wisdom that has been obtained can be used to help train new responders and guide those decisions which mill have to be made on the scenes of future events. During interviews file emergency response experts were asked to discuss lessons they had learned through experience. The interviewers asked them to tell what they had learned that would cause them to handle similar situations differently and to tell about things they saw at past events shat the would warn others not to do in the future. In response the experts discussed a variety of things. Most of their responses, however, touched on some of the same topics including: preparedness, experience people on-site mine rescue teams, and decision making. A summary of their responses provides alt overview of [lie lessons learned on-site at tile largest mine disasters in the country.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. Since its inception the United States Bureau of Mines has fostered the development of portable mine lamps. Although there is still much to be desired with respect to illumination in coal and metal mines and the replacement of open lights has been slow the Bureau has been given credit for assisting materially in the development and introduction of the safe and efficient portable mine-lighting equipment available today. Much of the work conducted by the electrical section of the Bureau entails approval tests of various types of electrical equipment, including lamps; to be used in atmospheres that may contain methane or coal dust in explosive proportion. If a can lamp meets the requirements-for safety, efficiency, and adequacy, as published in Schedule 6B,4 it is approved and is generally known as a "permissible" lamp. The terms "approved" and '"permissible' often are used interchangeably. The manufacturer must put an approval plate on each approved lamp, showing it has mot the schedule requirements. The approval plate is not a guarantee that the lamp is safe. However, if the lamp, once in service, has not had any parts changed or improperly assembled or if carts that wear out or depreciate have been properly replaced it should still, be safe, efficient, and adequate for the service intended. Virtually all electric cap lamps in service today in the United States and a great many that have been sent to foreign countries bear the approval plate of the United States Bureau of Mines. Although many explosions have been attributed to open lights none has been charged against the permissible cap lamp. Nystagmus, a disease of the eye attributed to working under insufficient illumination, is practically unknown among; American miners, although it is quite prevalent among European miners.

The compensation-insurance rates for quarrying in North Carolina are 11 times higher than for the State?s major industry, textiles. Some operators are willing to accept this as representing the ratio of existing hazards. This was not true of the management of the Southern Aggregates Corporation, and in 1935 it tools definite steps to correct the idea of its local officials and employees that loss of life and limb in quarries is inevitable. "In a previous paper the Bureau of Mines. 3/ presented in condensed tabular form all analyses of Texas crude oils made by the Bureau up to March 193K. This previous report states;The first Al well in Texas was drilled near Oil Springs, Nacogdoches County, in 1863-67. However, the first oil field of major importance in the State was discovered at Corsicana,Navarro County, in 1895. Since that time the petroleum industry try in the State has spread and grown until today petroleum from Texas is an important commodity in world petroleum markets.Since March 1939 samples of Texas crude oils from many new fields, and some older fields not covered in the previous report, nave been analyzed. Those analyses arc reported in the present paper. The annual production by years from 1896 to 1940, inclusive, taken from the figures in the Bureau of Mines Minerals Yearbook, are given in table 1. Production for 1896-1940, inclusive, totals 6,579,715,000 barrels.Various authors reported upon developments and production in the Texas fields in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Petroleum Division, for 1941. 4/"

A study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to provide quarry operators with information regarding (1) the effects of jointing and bedding on rock fragmentation when bench blasting in two small-scale (2.5-ft) limestone benches, and (2) the successful use of inexpensive equipment and field techniques to determine the orientation and spacing of joints and bedding separations within the quarry. Using inexpensive equipment, such as a pocket transit and steel and paper tapes, joint and bedding separations were mapped and their frequencies measured. Results from two small-scale bench blasts in the Stewartville member of the Galena limestone formation showed that when the row of vertical blast-holes was oblique to the vertical joint orientations, the backface expression was outlined by two relatively large triangular protrusions (joint surfaces). In this blast, part of the rock burden was unbroken. When the line of vertical blastholes paralleled a predominant joint set, all of the rock burden was broken and displaced. The thickness of fragments that had been displaced by a blast correlated with the observed bedding thickness in the bench.

Steel tanks often corrode rapidly in oil fields where the gas produced with crude petroleum contains an appreciable quantity of hydrogen sulphide. In many instances working tanks have been discarded after only six months of service because of failure induced by corrosion. Aluminum has been used for some time in the fabrication of certain equipment incidental to the handling of oils containing hydrogen sulphide gas in solution, and has exhibited no serious corrosive action. These uses indicated that aluminum tanks might be equally effective in counteracting hydrogen sulphide corrosion. Consequently, in the spring of 1928, an all-aluminum stock tank of 500 barrels capacity and a "composite" tank of equal capacity, having a steel bottom and bottom ring and an aluminum top and top ring, were placed in service on the State-Lassiter lease of the Gulf Production Co. in Crane County, Tex. These tanks were under observation for one year, the test being sponsored by the Gulf Production Co., the Aluminum Co. of America, rind the Parkersburg Ric and Real Co. The results of this preliminary test sustained the belief that aluminum is highly resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas and likewise indicated the type or grade of aluminum which could be most economically used for lease tankage. However, in this preliminary test the Wake were not subjected to contact with the large quantities of highly concentrated brines such as often are associated and produced with crude oil. Therefore, it was suggested by representatives of .the Aluminum Co. that additional tests be made to include production conditions in which large quantities of brine would be handled, for past experience had shown that aluminum often is susceptible to the corrosive action of brines.

This paper presents a review of published investigation dealing with the importance of sulfur compounds in the deterioration of materials or providing some basis for estimating the extent of loss shareable to such air pollution. Materials included are cement, stone, metals, paint, leather, paper, sand cloth. The investigations may be divided into two classes, one of the laboratory type in which the sulfur content and the humidity of the air were controlled and the other dealing with the exposure of materials to atmospheres not under control. The first type of work has shown that cement is subject to deterioration by the action of sulfur dioxide gas. The experiments with stone indicate that although limestone takes up sulfur dioxide, from the air, moist sulfur dioxide-air mixtures alone cannot be used for establishing- the comparative weathering- qualities of the different types of stone by accelerated test methods. Laboratory tests indicate that sulfur compounds in the air accelerate the corrosion of iron, steel, zinc, copper, and nickel at normal air temperatures and at certain relative humidities. It has also been indicated that certain types of paint are, affected by high sulfur dioxide concentrations, and that paper is attacked by sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. The investigations of the second type show the amount or variation of corrosion in different localities and under different types of exposure. The investigations (10) (18)4/ during which sulfur determinations were made indicate that sulfur dioxide is a main controlling factor in the corrosion of iron and steel but according to Quick (18) may not be for some nonferrous metals. In general, the laboratory tests do not Jive definite data on the loss due to sulfur compounds at the concentrations normally found in the air. The data from atmospheric exposures are not complete from the standpoint of the exact effect of the sulfur compounds. Damage to materials so exposed is affected by factors such as other chemical contaminants, humidity, rainfall, solid deposits, and sunlight. The Bureau of Mines studied the uniaxial compressive strength of model rock pillars as a function of the angle and spacing of noncohesive planes of weakness. The model pillars were prepared from NX 2-l/8-inch diameter drill core of limestone, sandstone, and granite, and the planes of weakness were diamond saw cuts ground flat and smooth. The angle of the planes of weakness, measured from the horizontal, varied from zero to 57° in approximately 15° increments. When two planes of weakness were used, the thickness-to-diameter ratio of the wafer was 1/4, 1/2, and 1, Approximately 400 model pillars were tested in uniaxial compression. The results indicate that the uniaxial compressive strength of model pillars decreases rapidly as the angle of the plane of weakness increases from 30° to 57°, and that the spacing of these planes of weakness has only a minor effect on the strength. The effect of the number of horizontal planes of weakness, with a spacing of 1/4 and 1/2 of the diameter, upon the compressive strength of model pillars was also investigated. These results indicate that as the number of planes of weakness increases the compressive strength of the pillar decreases. Normalizing the data provides useful estimates of model pillar strengths for any rock type.

Vanadium is subject to only light corrosion in phosphoric acid at temperatures up to 60° C. and has a moderate corrosion rate in this acid at 100° C. It is relatively corrosion resistant in sulfuric and hydrochloric acids up to 60° C, but corrodes rapidly at 100° C. It corrodes rapidly in dilute nitric acid at 35° C. Vanadium is almost inert in 10-percent solutions of formic, acetic, lactic, tartaric, and citric acids; in 9-percent oxalic acid it corrodes slowly up to 60° C. and rapidly at 100° C. Vanadium is resistant to corrosion in substitute ocean water, tapwater, and in 3-percent sodium chloride and 10-percent sodium hydroxide solutions. It is readily attacked, however, by 20-percent ferric chloride, 20-percent cupric chloride and 5-percent mercuric chloride solutions. Vanadium is protected by contact with magnesium, aluminum, and steel SAE 4130 in substitute ocean water, by magnesium and aluminum in 3-percent sodium chloride solution, and by magnesium in tapwater. Vanadium protects copper in substitute ocean water. When vanadium and stainless steel are coupled in sulfuric acid solutions, both metals are usually unaffected by contact, whereas the corrosion rate of titanium in sulfuric acid is greatly reduced by contact with vanadium.

In order to conduct these investigations in an orderly manner they are carried out under a published schedule of tests known as Schedule 20, which specifies detailed requirements for motors, controllers, etc., and fees covering the various inspections and tests made as part of a routine investigation.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 434 gas samples from 16 States. These samples were collected during calendar year 1961 as part of the continuous survey for the occurrence of helium in natural gas conducted by the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines. The analyses herein were made by mass spectrometer and Frost helium apparatus. The most important helium resource discovery made during 1961 was the Table Mesa field in San Juan County, N. Mex. This field, Which has an estimated recoverable helium reserve of 850 million cubic feet, is now supplying gas containing approximately 5.4 percent helium to the Bureau of Mines Navajo Helium Plant at Shiprock, N. Mex.
