This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

The Bell & Zoller Coal & Mining Co. recently completed construction of two slopes at Mine 3 near Zeigler , Ill . The slopes are in the Big Muddy River Valley , and construction was particularly difficult because the strata from the surface to a depth of 70 feet comprise water saturated sandy clay and sand . Many mining companies have similar shaft- and slope - sinking problems , and because these slopes were satisfactorily completed and now are in use the methods followed during construction are described in this information circular . It is believed that other companies with similar problems . will benefit by adopting the methods followed at Mine 3 .

1.1 BACKGROUND In many underground coal mining operations the use of electromagnetic field equipment, particularly communication systems, not only increases the overall efficiency of the mining operation but can be directly linked with mine safety considerations. The use of electromagnetic field producing equipment in underground coal mining operations can only be expected to grow. Several new communication systems have already been proposed. In addition, high-frequency producing equipments for many diverse uses in mining operations are under study. The use of these equipment in underground mining operations is hampered by the possibility of their electromagnetic fields interacting with the electric blasting cap operations commonly carried out in the mines. Such interactions can have at least two results bearing directly on mine safety: o premature initiation of the cap, either in its normal shot location or during hookup or transportation; o dudding of the cap so that normal firing operations do not cause irritation; thereby leaving unexploded high explosives after normal firing. Since the consequences of a premature initiation could, particularly in coal mines operations, result in catastrophe involving human life, the overall approach to prediction of possible hazard must be, as far as possible, of a "worst case" nature. Linear programing provides a mathematical technique by which activities can be planned in such a way that an optimal result is obtained. Routine applications of linear programing require only a knowledge of algebra. However, a complete understanding of the fundamentals of linear programing requires a knowledge of advanced mathematics. The purpose of this publication is clarification of terminology and illustration of applications in comparatively simple mining problems. Two mining situations are considered: Mine stopes from which ore is to be produced at a minimum production cost; also, uranium mines from which ore is transported to one mill, a maximum monetary value is desired. The details of data arrangement for solution by linear programing are described and the solutions are presented. Results of these solutions indicate successful applications of linear programing to mine production scheduling.

The basic character of the free energy r data relating to water and the oxides of carbon makes it desirable that the most representative values that can be obtained should be constantly available. The calculations of Lewis and Randall3 retain much of their of original value, but appear to require some modification in the light of more recent work. This paper has been written to incorporate the newer information and to present some estimate of the reliability of the resulting figures. The data upon which the calculations are mainly based are, for these substances, the equilibrium constants of the various reactions involved. The original work relating to these equilibria has, been reviewed and, where possible, weighted to correspond with its probable reliability. The differences in the results of the present from the earlier calculations are partly the consequence of this appraisal and partly of the inclusion of more extensive data, as will be indicated in detail in the succeeding sections.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the mining industry, has identified and demonstrated the effectiveness of several improved face ventilation techniques for longwall mining systems. These include the following: identifying improved techniques for measuring face ventilation parameters on longwall sections, installing curtains at the intake end of the longwall face to maximize usage of the primary airflow, identifying optimum face airflow rates for maximizing dilution effects, and coursing the primary face intake from tailgate to headgate to minimize outby airflow contamination. Application of these techniques throughout the mining industry should reduce the health hazard associated with excessive exposure to respirable coal mine dust.

Calcareous rocks, of which the principal varieties are marble and lime¬stone, are used extensively for building and ornamental purposes. Onyx and travertine, subdivisions of these groups, are sufficiently distinctive in origin and use to merit separate classification. The purpose of this paper is to define the terms "onyx" and "travertine" and to describe the occurrences and uses of the materials bearing these names. ORIGIN AND CHARACTER Confusion exists in the use of the word "onyx." True onyx is a banded chalcedony, a form of silicon dioxide related to jasper, agate, and flint. Calcium carbonate is commonly deposited from solution in successive layers of varying color closely resembling onyx, and for this reason such calcareous rock is also called "onyx." The Bureau of Mines estimated the economic feasibility of investing in a directional hole methane drainage project in the Pittsburgh coalbed for 5 yr in advance of mining. This report estimates the capital investment and operating cost of recovering 325 MMft3 of methane gas per year and the selling price of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year. The labor, equipment, and supply requirements were determined from those of a previous directional hole drilled at the Emerald Mine, near Waynesburg, PA. The cost of equipment, materials, services, and labor are in third quarter 1982 dollars. They were obtained from vendors, contractors, and the U.S. Department of Labor. Findings indicate a total capital investment of $1,381,160. Annual operating cost amounted to $167,690. At a wellhead price of $2.05 per thousand cubic feet, the sale of approximately 317 MMft3 of gas per year results in a rate of return on investment of approximately 25 pet.

The Bureau of Mines conducted one of the most extensive studies on surface mine illumination to date, to assess the illumination needs of mobile surface mining machinery with respect to the visual tasks required of machinery operators. Field Investigations were performed at 22 surface mining operations, coal and metal-nonmetal, within several mining regions of the United States. Visibility and illumination were measured for 159 visual tasks performed by equipment operators on or near 57 surface mining machines, including draglines, shovels, blasthole drills, bulldozers, loaders, haul trucks, graders, scrapers, and several service-type vehicles.

The Copper King copper-gold-silver deposit was discovered about 1880. Various individuals and companies have been interested in the deposit and considerable work has been done, although production, if any, has been small. The deposit is located in the western part of Laramie County, Wyo., and is favorably situated with respect to rail and truck transportation and high-tension power facilities. Mild summers and cold winters characterize the climate. Precipitation averages between 16 and 17 inches annually, with considerable snowfall in the winter. Permanent streams are small and most available water in being stored for use by Cheyenne, Wyo. Range grasses comprise the bulk of the vegetation, with small trees and shrubs common in the most rugged areas.

Vehicles traveling on untreated dirt and gravel roads at open-pit mines disseminate high concentrations of dust (fig. 1). Excessive dust creates safety hazards by reducing visibility and may endanger the health of the men who breathe it. If the dust contains free silica, it can cause silicosis. In addition, maintenance costs of mechanical equipment are increased if equipment is operated in extremely dusty places. Dust on haulage roads in hot, arid country can be controlled if the surface of the road is sprinkled frequently and adequately with water. Often, when roads are sprinkled with water to control the dust, hazards are caused through reduced traction and skidding because of the mud that is formed on the surface of the road. Reducing the amount of water used will help to reduce the hazard of skidding.

Modern mechanized mining with high-speed machines, multiple-entry systems, multiple blasting, high-velocity air currents, and rapid haulage has brought many economic benefits and has on the whole enhanced safety in the coal-mining industry. It has, however, also introduced some added hazards, the control of which requires concerted effort and ingenuity. Mechanized mining has greatly increased the production and dissemination of fine coal seam or in mine entries. Use of high-speed machines has increased the probability of formation of incendive sparks, which are produced by frictional contact between moving metals and certain mineral substances in the coal seam or in the adjoining rock strata. In gassy seams rapid extraction of coal has increased the rate of gas evolution. These facts have made more urgent the need of preventing the ignition of coal dust and the development of widespread mine explosions. The ignition hazard can be controlled best by eliminating all potential igniting sources and by careful attention to ventilation designed to prevent accumulation of gas capable of triggering a coal-dust explosion. Frictional spark ignition by mining machines and suggested safeguards are discussed in a recent publication. Extensive research and long experience have shown conclusively that the propagation of coal-dust flames can be arrested and the development of widespread explosions prevented by properly applied, generalized rock dusting.

In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the nine separate parcels that comprise the 4,330-acre South Warner Contiguous Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The nine parcels are along the east side of the South Warner Wilderness. They are, from north to south, the Granger, Milk, Cottonwood, Owl, Hornback, Eagle, Emerson, Barber, and Van Riper parcels. The Wilderness Study Area is underlain by basaltic, andesitic, and rhyolitic volcanic rocks and by sand and gravel deposits. Low-grade metamorphism is widespread in the volcanic rocks, with quartz, zeolites, datolite, chlorite, and calcite locally abundant in veins and amygdules. The rocks have been displaced by the mountain-front Surprise Valley fault and by crosscutting high-angle faults.

The properties of crude petroleum continue to interest the Bureau of Mines and constitute an important phase of its major studies on the mineral resources of the United States. The Bureau's interest in the subject has been intensified by frequent requests for information on the characteristics of crude petroleum from various producing fields. Since its inception the Bureau of Mines has collected and analyzed samples of typical oils and at present has surveyed and classified crude petroleums from nearly all the known oil fields of the Western Hemisphere. Results of these surveys have been presented in various Bureau of Mines publications. (See bibliography, appendix A, p. 145.) The nature and comparative value of crude oils from various countries and the extent to which these oils may be considered potential competitors for markets are of manifest importance to the petroleum industry in all lands, largely because all crude oils, wherever produced, are either actual or potential competitors for a market with all other crude oils. The numerous discussions of foreign production of oil that have appeared in the technical press in the past indicate the great interest of the United States in this subject.

"Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully understood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has. been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed subjects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting disease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the expression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). This report summarizes Bureau of Mines laboratory tests of four tungsten¬-bearing materials of various grades, The test work has demonstrated that the dry reaction between sodium carbonate and scheelite is best conducted at 900° C. or a few degrees less. The sodium carbonate requirement, in addition to the stoichiometric equivalent of the scheelite, is in some inverse relationship to the grade of tungsten in the ore. Residence time and particle size exert a definite but minor control on the reaction. Pressure-digestion tests on an impure concentrate indicate the technical feasibility of extraction by this process. INTRDUCTION Over 100 years ago Oxland discovered that tungstic oxide could be removed from wolframite and converted to a soluble form by reacting the mineral with a soluble alkaline salt at elevated temperatures. He patented this discovery, and this patent 4/ since has been the basis for most tungsten extraction. Much literature exists on this process and its modifications, and the characteristics and possibilities of the reaction are quite well defined.

Because of increasing concern with air pollution, the Bureau of Mines has developed a hydrometallurgical procedure to obtain elemental sulfur from chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) by means of the following reaction: CuFeS2 + 3FeCl3 ? CuCl + 4FeCl2 + 2S. Under optimum conditions, 99.6 percent of the copper and 71.6 percent of the iron were extracted in 2 hours from a typical mill concentrate containing 75 percent CuFeS2 and 15 percent pyrite (FeS2). At the same time, 68.2 percent of the sulfur in the concentrate was oxidized to the elemental form. The leach was highly selective; gangue minerals, including pyrite, were not attacked, thus accounting for the relatively low recoveries of iron and sulfur. To obtain these results, the concentrate was ground to 98.9 percent minus 325 mesh, and 300 grams was treated with 1 liter of boiling ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution. The FeC13/CuFeS2 ratio was 2.7. Cement copper containing 99.9 percent copper was recovered from the leach solution by cementation on sponge iron. Excess iron, dissolved during leaching and cementation, was removed from the stripped solution by crystallization. Ferrous chloride (FeCl2?4H2O), obtained as a byproduct, was converted to high-purity ferric oxide (Fe203) and HCI by an oxidizing roast. The hydrochloric acid was then electrolyzed to obtain chlorine, which was used to regenerate the leach solution. The leach residue, which contained ~50 weight-percent elemental sulfur, was treated with an organic solvent to recover the sulfur and cyanided to reclaim gold and silver.

Recent research by the Bureau of Mines has demonstrated that the segregation process has merit for treating oxidized and mixed oxide-sulfide copper ores. The process comprises heating the crushed ore with salt and coke or other carbonaceous materials at about 700° C. to produce fine flake copper, which then is recovered by conventional copper-flotation methods. Bench-scale laboratory tests of a number of oxidized and mixed copper ores assaying 0.78 to 5 percent Cu gave copper recoveries of 73 to 96 percent. The flotation concentrates assayed 21 to 76 percent Cu, depending on the ore being treated.

This study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for four underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.06 to 4.99 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,540,700 for the 1.06-million-ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine to $44,720,500 for the 4.99 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,850,700 to $75,693,500 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $8.76 to $7.53 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

The Bureau of Mines has examined selected deposits of titanium minerals throughout the United States. The titaniferous magnetite deposits in the western San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, Calif., were among those selected for study, and in 1956-58 field work was conducted to determine the extent and character of the titaniferous magnetite deposits occurring in the area. This report describes this work and summarizes earlier work in the area by the Bureau and others. The titaniferous magnetite occurs disseminated as seams and lenticular pods in an anorthosite belt 4 to 6 miles wide that trends about. N. 80° W., extending from sec. 13, T. 3 N., R. 12 W., to the west boundary of R. 14 W., at which point the titaniferous magnetite-bearing rocks disappear beneath the sediments in the Santa Clara River Valley.
