These agreements will affect minerals by reducing tariff levels and by changing rules by which they are traded internationally.

Although during the past 10 years Alabama has attained an enviable position by its coal-mine accident experience and, like most of the other coal-mining States, has made progress in the safer operation of coal mines, there is still room for improvement, which can be realized only by still greater efforts on the part of employees and employers. From 1993, when accidents were first recorded by the Alabama State Mine Inspection Department, to 1934, inclusive, 3,451 men lost their lives in the production of 569,722,676 tons of coal. The primary purpose of this report is to bring to the attention of the mining industry in Alabama end elsewhere statistics of fatal accidents for 1931-34, with the hope that a study of the causes may lead to reduction of similar accidents in the future.

The investigation reported herein is concerned with the generation and propagation of the strain wave produced in rock by the detonation of a high-velocity explosive. This report is the second of a series that will deal with this and related problems. The rock type in which these experiments were carried out was greenstone. Subsequent reports will discuss similar investigations in other rock types. Specifically, the problem under study is concerned with how certain characteristics of the strain wave, such as the maximum compressive and tensile strain, the maximum time rate of change of strain, the frequency components present in the pulse, the duration of the pulse, and other measurable characteristics, vary with the size of the charge and the distance from the detonation point to the point of measurement. . Other investigators have studied certain aspects of the generation and propagation problem in rock. However, in these studies the travel distances from the detonation to measurement point were comparatively long and the frequency components in the explosive wave were usually under 100 c.p.s. In this study the detonation to measurement distance covered. the range from 2 to 54 feet, and the strain gages and recording equipment employed in the instrumentation of the problem had a frequency response range from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report describes methods to enhance the capacity, stiffness, and timber utilization of wood crib supports. Since stiffer supports minimize strata deflections that contribute to roof instability, efforts to maximize crib stiffness while maintaining stability through a wide displacement range should be a design priority. The stiffness and capacity of conventional crib designs, employing alternating layers of wood timbers that are loaded perpendicular to the grain, can be increased by increasing the interlayer contact area or by using higher strength wood. Contact area can be increased by using wider timbers or employing more timbers per layer. Concepts that provide parallel-to-the-grain timber loading will provide substantial increases in crib stiffness and capacity. Two concepts that utilize this principle are examined: (1) an original South African design that constructs wood cribs from preformed layers (mats) of timber where short blocks are oriented vertically between horizontal slabs; and (2) a design that employs full lengths of timber placed vertically in the interior of a conventional crib structure. These designs also provide more efficient timber utilization by providing greater support capacity per volume of wood used in the crib construction.

A laboratory mineral-dressing investigation of manganese ore from the Martin mine, Independence County, Ark., succeeded in recovering ferrograde manganese products. Sintered flotation concentrates analyzing 40.7 and 41.4 percent manganese at overall recoveries of 54.6 and 47.7 percent, respectively, were produced from preconcentrated feed, Preconcentration of the ore for flotation included treatment by magnetic separation and by a combination of magnetic separation and heavy-medium processing. The mineral-dressing study of the Martin mine rhodochrosite ore was part of a general program of the Bureau of Mines to develop domestic sources of strategic minerals, including manganese. Several such potential sources of manganese exist in the Batesville, Ark., district, one of which is represented by the Martin mine. Although the Martin mine area has not been delimited with respect to total reserve tonnage, it is considered to be one of the more important occurrences of manganese in the district. It is estimated that several 100,000 tons of manganese carbonate ore are present in this and similar properties.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements provide direct evidence for the involvement of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI)· by NAD(P)H. Addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O 2) to NAD(P)H-Cr(VI) reaction mixtures suppresses the Cr(V) signal and generates hydroxyl (·OH) radicals (as detected via spin trapping), suggesting that Cr(V) reacts with H2O 2 to generate the ·OH radicals. Reaction between H2O 2 and a Cr(V)·glutathione complex, and between H2O 2 and several Cr(V)-carboxylato complexes also produces ·OH radicals. These results suggest that Cr(V) complexes catalyze the generation of ·OH radicals from H2O 2, and that ·OH radicals might play a significant role in the mechanism of Cr(VI) cytotoxicity. KEY WORDS: ESR. spin trapping, Cr(VI) reduction, Cr(V), hydrogen peroxide, free radicals.INTRODUCTIONThis communication reports an ESR spin trapping detection of hydroxyl ( OH) radicals.in reactions between some Cr(V) complexes containing biologically important ligands and hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2 ). This work was undertaken because while the reduction of Cr(VI) to lower oxidation states has been suggested as a key step in the mechanism of Cr(VI) toxicity, the reaction· mechanism is not yet clear. 1 Mutagencity has been well documented for Cr(VI) via various bacterial assays, while Cr(III) has been shown not to be mutagenic.2 • 3 Since it has been reported that compounds containing Cr(VI) do not react with isolated DNA,4 the reduction of Cr(VI) by other cellular constituents has been thought to be important in the mechanism of Cr(VI) induced DNA alteration.1·4 • 5 For cellular systems earlier studies include those on the reduction of C~(VI) by microsomes,6-8 rat liver DT-diaphorase,9 and aldehyde oxidase. 10 Regarding the reduction mechanism, Jennette used ESR spectroscopy to show that a long-lived Cr(V) complex is formed as an intermediate in the microsomal reduction of Cr(VI) in the presence of NADPH.8 She postulated that Cr(V) is the ""ultimate"" carcinogenic form of chromium compounds. This conclusion has led to many further investigations of the formation of Cr(V) in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions.11 - 19 More recently, however, it has been suggested that oxygen-derived radicals generated during the Cr(VI) reduction are the species responsible for the DNA alteration.20.2• To the best of our knowledge, however, no information is available on the generation of such radicals in the reduction of Cr(VI) under biologically relevant conditions, except some preliminary results on the glutathionyl (GS·) radical formation in the reduction of Cr(VI) by glutathione (GSH). 11 - 19 We, therefore, undertook a systematic investigation of the reaction of Cr(VI) with NAD(P)H, GSH, ix-hydroxycarboxylic acids, and H2O 2 • NADPH was chosen as a model reductant because of its ubiquitous existence inside the cells, its critical role in the enzymatic Cr(VI) reduction,1·6-9 its representation of important cellular Cr(VI) reductants, and its ability to reduce other metal ions.22 GSH was chosen as another model Cr(VI) reductant because GSH also exists inside cells, it represents another important category of cellular Cr(VI) reductants, the thiols, and it also plays an important role in the Cr(VI) toxicity .1• 1 ""- 19.i3.i4 For further clarification, we also studied the reaction of Cr(VI) with several '1'.-hydroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of H2O 2 since these acids are definitively known to reduce Cr(VJ) to form stable, isolable Cr(V).25 .2 6 The results obtained indicate that Cr(V) complexes, produced in the reduction of Cr(VJ) by cellular reductants, react with H2 O 2 to generate ·OH radicals, which might be the initiators of primary events in Cr(VI) carcinogenicity."

As part of a program for improving, the safety of permissible explosives, the Federal Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investigation to establish the ability of sodium chloride to reduce the incendivity of permissible explosives to firedamp atmospheres. A motivating influence for this investigation has been the comparatively extensive experience of British and other European investigators, who used sodium chloride as a component of their permitted explosives (1, 5, 6 7).5/ In the United States research and development work of this type has been less extensive, although sodium chloride has been added to permissible explosives as a cooling agent (9) for many years. The results of the first phase of this investigation were presented in a previous paper (8), which established that adding up to 10 percent sodium chloride to permissible explosives reduces the likelihood of ignition of firedamp in the gallery test; however, the results were somewhat inconsistent, and the conclusions were qualified. Accordingly, the investigation was continued with a study of the effect of added sodium chloride as a function of the quantity added and of the particle size of the salt.

Reaction rate coefficients were determined from analyses of the effluent gas for the reduction of granular ferrous oxide to metallic iron by passing carbon monoxide through a packed bed of oxide at a controlled rate in the temperature range 1,000° to 1,300° C. Coefficients were determined by the comparison of observed analyses and calculated analyses using a mathematical model that takes into account the nonuniform composition of both the solid oxide and the gas. A method is also given for finding the value of the rate coefficient that best fits the observed data.

"The United States Bureau of Mines, in the interest of the prevention of injuries and fatalities in coal mines, has engaged in a study of the circumstances and conditions under which falls of roof and coal contribute to coal-mine accidents, and this publication is devoted to the result of a study conducted in mince developed in the Pittsburgh or No. 8 coal in eastern Ohio.To emphasize the need of this study a statement of the fatalities which have resulted from falls of roof is presented, followed by a brief description of the field and its geology. The mining methods, regulations, and timbering practices are presented and discuss, as well as supervision and discipline, all of which are important factors in the control of the roof and the prevention of falls of roof material that are liable to result in injury to the underground workmen.During the five-year period, 1924 to 1928, there were 10,820 fatalities in the cool mines of the United States, of which number 5,573 or 51.5 per cent resulted from fells of roof material, such as draw slate or roof coal, and of coal from the fact or sides. These fatalities generally occur singly, consequently they are given little publicity compared with major disasters consulting from explosions which, during the same five-year period, amounted to only 17.8 per cent of the total fatalities.Seven,mines in eastern Ohio, each typical, of mines in its locality, have been carefully studied, and the result of this study is herein presented so the information may be and beneficial to all who may be operating mines having,similar natural or physical conditions.In general, it will be found that measures taken to prevent injuries or fatalities from falls of roof as well as other safety measures, will have the effect of increasing the efficiency and economy in mining operation. The result of the study so far made on the falls of roof problem indicates that such features as mine management, supervision, inspection, discipline, character of roof, timbering methods, and blasting have a direct bearing on any scheme that may be evolved to prevent injury or loss of life by falls of roof."

This report summarizes Bureau of Mines contract research on the disposal of retorted oil shale. A data base has been developed describing the physical-chemical properties, geotechnical engineering properties, and natural cementation characteristics of spent shale. Results of field compaction tests and seepage pond tests are presented, along with results of a partially saturated finite element seepage model used to predict infiltration and seepage rates. Preliminary engineering analyses are presented for underground disposal systems, which include material transport methods, and for a surface disposal system, which includes stability analyses.

Ten to twelve million tons of dust is produced by cement kilns annu-ally in the United States, resulting in a serious waste disposal problem. The Bureau of Mines investigated two alkali volatilization methods for converting this dust into materials for making portland cement and a useful potassium product. Portland cement kiln dust was found to be composed of finely ground cement raw materials (CaC03 and 8i02) having a layer of alkali sulfate (K2S04 and Na2S04). In this form, it cannot be directly recycled to cement kilns because concrete is weakened by a reaction between the alkali and the aggregate. Portland cements with 28-day strengths above 5,000 psi were produced from low-alkali residues using sintering and melting methods. For nearly complete removal of alkalies, primarily potassium sulfate, from cement kiln dust, a temperature above 1,300° C and a reducing atmosphere were required.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research into the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica and has used this method to produce mica concentrates that contain more than 90 percent mica. This research is being carried out pursuant to the Bureau's objective to develop technology that will help maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Researchers used a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and zig-zag air classifiers to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica-bearing materials. This pneumatic system was used to concentrate four mica ores from Arizona, North Carolina, and South Dakota and three waste tailings from Alabama, Georgia, and South Dakota. Using these samples, it was demonstrated that plus 65-mesh size mica can be effectively recovered by the pneumatic method. Not only were the concentrates high in mica content; it was also demonstrated that this method can be used to recover up to 78 percent of the mica that was originally contained in the samples. Because it is a dry concentration method, the pneumatic beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas where water resources are limited.

As the result of a study of an area comprising some 100 square miles in the Missouri-Kansas Zinc district known to have produced zinc Ore from horizons below the Grand Falls formation, it was concluded that these horizons could become an important future source of zinc. To test this conclusion and to ascertain the general conditions associated with these lower-horizon ore deposits, the Bureau of Mines undertook detailed drilling of localities thought to be favorable for deposition of ore in the Reeds Spring and. Fern Glen formations. Two sites in the Galena, Kans., mining camp were chosen for this purpose. Ninety churn-drill holes totaling 19,338 feet of bore were completed by the Bureau in two campaigns that extended from October 1944 to June 1946. Approximately 25 percent of the holes encountered ore and indicated three separate ore bodies containing substantial tonnages. Observations made during the course of the work revealed that certain structural conditions are common to ore deposits in the Reeds Spring and. Fern Glen formations.

This report describes a project conducted by the Bureau of Mines in which the accurate directional drilling of a borehole was demonstrated with the objective of intercepting a designated target. The project was conducted at Navajo Dam in northern New Mexico at the request of the Bureau of Reclamation. Borehole survey and drill logs are provided in an appendix. The trajectory of the demonstration borehole was designed to intercept a 5-ft-radius target at the final or "punchout" distance of 885 ft. The elevation of the borehole at this distance was within the target; the borehole punchout coordinates were 8.81 ft southwest of the target. As a result of the demonstrated accuracy, the Bureau of Reclamation has contracted the accurate drilling of boreholes as long as 600 ft from the inside of a short tunnel, to control water seepage in the right abut- ment. This resulted in a substantial cost savings compared to the orig- inal plan of constructing a longer tunnel and drilling 150-ft boreholes.

THIRTY-FOUR analyses of crude oils from the fields of the Four Corners Area of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah are presented and compared. The samples, taken from formations in four geological time periods, have high gravity and low-sulfur, -nitrogen, and -asphalt content. Generally, the oils are paraffinic in the low-boiling fractions, with increasing naphthenicity in the higher-boiling fractions. Oils from Cretaceous formations resemble other Cretaceous oils in the Rocky Mountains, but oils from Permian and Pennsylvania formations are unlike other oils of these ages in the Rooky Mountains. The differences in the oils are minor and cannot be used to distinguish between fields or between producing formations. With minimum special processing, the oils should yield large amounts of good-quality motor fuels. INTRODUCTION The only place in the United States where four States have a common junction is known as the Four Corners Area. This area (fig. 1) includes the northeast corner of Arizona, the southwest corner of Colorado, the northwest corner of New Mexico, and the southeast corner of Utah. It includes three major geological basins: The Black Mesa, the San Juan, and the Paradox. Major oil developments have occurred in both the San Juan and Paradox basins, but no discovery of commercial importance has been made in the Black Mesa basin.

The object of this research was to investigate the technical feasibility of preparing chromium metal by the thermal decomposition of bisbenzene chromium. Bisbenzene chromium, a pi-bonded sandwich type organometallic compound, was thermally decomposed under reduced pressure to form a metal plate on a heated substrate. Metal recovery was close to 100 percent of theoretical, with deposition rates up to 20.8 mg/hr/cm2. Metal purity was dependent not only upon the purity of the starting material, but also upon the sublimation rate of bisbenzene chromium. Total detectable metallic impurities ranged from a low of 18 ppm to several hundred ppm. In general, metallic impurities were less than 100 ppm. Carbon, the major nonmetallic impurity, ranged from less than 0.3 percent to more than 10 percent. The carbon contamination is most likely a result of the decomposition of the organic portion of bisbenzene chromium. An unusual property of some of the deposits was their outstanding corrosion resistance. Unlike pure electrolytic chromium, which dissolves readily, these deposits were insoluble in hot mineral acids.

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. Studies on continuous - circuit leach - aluminum precipitation and leachelectrodeposition of mercury were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions and cost estimates for recovering mercury from mercury sulfide flotation concentrates . With 150 grams of sodium sulfide and 50 grams of sodium hydroxide per liter , from 98 to 99.8 percent of the mercury was extracted from flotation concentrates , with about 0.5 pound of sodium hydroxide used per pound of mercury produced . Precipitation of mercury from the caustic - sulfide solution with minus 8 - mesh aluminum shot required about 0.2 pound of aluminum per pound of mercury produced at a cost of $ 0.05 per pound of mercury . Electrodeposition cost with 7 mill power , based on 50 percent current efficiency , was below 2 mills per pound of metal deposited . Feed solutions ranged from 10 to 130 grams of mercury per liter , and current densities , from 2 to 70 amperes per square foot . The cost of open- pit mining 250 tons per day was estimated at $ 1.75 per ton , and flotation - leachingelectrodeposition of the ore , at $ 3.54 , resulting in a cutoff grade of about 0.1 percent mercury . The cost of underground mining 50 tons per day was estimated at $ 20.00 per ton , and the cost of milling the ore was estimated at $ 13.33 , which resulted in a cutoff grade of 0.6 percent mercury .
