"Helium has great value to the oil and as industry as a tracer gas, according to tests just completed in the Elk Hills Field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, Kearn County, California. When used as .a tracer gas, small percentages of helium are mixed with natural gas pumped into a reservoir for conservation, repressuring, or cycling purposes. Because minute quantities of helium added to natural gases can be detected by analytical methods and accurately determined, the variations of the helium content of gas withdrawn from various parts of a field when helium has been added to the injected gas give interesting and long-sought data on the movement of injected gas through reservoirs.The Bureau of Mines engineers began their studies of the use of helium as a tracer material in gas-injection operations in the Elk Hills, California, oil field, Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1, in response to a request by the Navy Department for assistance in connection with an expanded oil-production program instituted in that field. This report discusses the Bureau's work on the problem of determining the direction and extent of migration of injected gas in the Elk Hills reservoir by the use of helium as a tracer gas,The Bureau appreciates the cooperation and assistance of Commodore W. The pegmatite investigations at the Rapid City, S. Dak., Experiment Station during; the pact 3 years have been primarily a study of recovering beryl from nonlithium-bearing pegmatite rock by continuous-testing methods. Beryl concentrates containing 25 to 88 percent beryl were produced from rock that ranged in beryl content from 0.1 to 2.5 percent. The beryl recovery ranged upward from 70 percent but averaged better than 80 percent. Although promising results have been obtained with flotation methods for upgrading these concentrates to standard specifications, additional work is needed to improve and simplify the procedure. In addition, it was demonstrated that several potentially useful coproducts could also be recovered from pegmatite rock. The principal coproducts were mica, feldspar, and quartz. A heavy-mineral product also was made from pegmatites containing tin, tantalum, and columbium. The recovery if these minerals in products meeting the specifications of the commercial users has been reserved for future study. The investigations also included studies on extraction of beryllium from both high-grade beryl and flotation concentrates of medium beryllium content. The procedure investigated consisted of sintering beryl or beryl flotation concentrates with limestone, acid curing the resulting sinter with sulfuric acid to dissolve the beryllium, and water leaching to extract the beryllium. Over 90 percent of the beryllium was extracted by this procedure. Most of the optimum conditions and quantities of reagents were determined for dissolving the beryllium. As aluminum and iron also were taken into solution by the acid, further research is needed on methods of recovering high-grade beryllium salts from the solutions containing these elements.

There are three researches upon the specific heat of water vapor by the method of explosion that are sufficiently advanced in technique and suitable in plan to justify careful study of their results , with the double purpose of fixing the best available experimental values and indicating the attainable accuracy of the method. These three researches comprise the work of Pier , Bjerrum , and Siegel.5 The work of earlier date than Pier's suffers from obvious inaccuracy of measurement , while the experiments more recent than Siegel's , such as those of Womersley6 , of Bone and his collaborators , and of Maxwell and Wheeler , 8 are for the most part not well designed for the accurate determination of the heat capacities in question . Some of the errors to which they are especially subject have been discussed by David and by David and Thorp.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory tests to devise a procedure for extracting copper from low-grade discarded mill tailings. A solid extractant consisting of an organic solvent extraction reagent adsorbed on granular activated carbon was investigated and proved to be satisfactory for extracting copper directly from leach pulps. When this material was used in a cyclic leaching, stripping, and electrowinning pro-cess, 95 pct of the acid-soluble copper was recovered from oxidized mill tailings. The weathered tailings contained 0.24 pct Cu (total) and 0.20 pct acid-soluble Cu. The copper was recovered as cathodes containing, in parts per million, 1.6 Pb, 3.6 Fe, 0.5 Sb, 1.5 AI, 1.9 Mn, and <1 Mg.

This report traces the development of techniques for the preparation of high-purity rare-earth metals. Rare-earth metals, excepting samarium, europium, and ytterbium, were prepared by converting their oxides to anhydrous chlorides or fluorides and reducing the rare-earth halides with active metals such as lithium or calcium. High-purity, anhydrous rare-earth chlorides were prepared by dissolving the rare-earth oxides in hydrochloric acid to form hydrated chlorides and by subsequently dehydrating the hydrated salts in the presence of ammonium chloride at temperatures ranging from 70° to 360° C. while under reduced pressure (50 microns to 1 inch Hg). The chlorides were also prepared by direct chlorination of rare-earth oxide-carbon mixtures. Reaction efficiencies in excess of 95 percent were obtained by either method; however, purer chlorides were prepared by the aqueous ammonium chloride conversion method. Purification of yttrium chloride by high-temperature vacuum distillation proved to be an effective method of separating, oxygen-bearing compounds from the chloride. Yttrium metal prepared from purified chloride contained significantly smaller amounts of oxygen (990 p.p.m. oxygen in yttrium metal prepared from raw chloride and 200 p.p.m. in that prepared from distilled chloride).

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 8,445 acres of the 20,650-acre Tunnison Mountain Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate its identified mi nerd 1 resources. The study area is located in Lassen County, CA, about 8 miles northeast from Susanville. No mineral resources were identified in the study area based on literature, field observations, and sample results. No mines were operating in or near the study area in 1985, and no mines, prospects, or claims have been located in or within 1 mi le of the study area. The study area is underlain by Pliocene and Pleistocene volcanic units composed of basalt, andesite, rhyolite, and some pyroclastics. No metallic and only nonmetallic commodities are present in the study area. These included stone and sand and gravel. Although substantial volumes of basalt and andesite (stone) occur within the study area, no identified resources of these commodities were delineated. Sand and gravel is not economic because of small occurrence size and lack of local markets.

Unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in 69% of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground U.S. stone mines from 1990 to 1996. Field investigations at 45 underground stone mines suggest that excessive beam sag or deflection is the principal unstable roof behavior characteristics associated with miner injuries. Laminated roof structures, common in most underground stone mines, allow the immediate roof to separate into distinct beams. The timely determination of roof beam deflection could provide stone miners with advanced knowledge of potentially hazardous roof. Existing methods to assess roof conditions consist of observational and monitoring techniques. Observational techniques include open drillholes, sounding, wedging, and borescopes. Monitoring techniques include scratch tools, extensometers, telltales, Miners Helpers, and Guardian Angels&apos;. Miners have difficulty utilizing these techniques because roof beams are located an average of 8 m (26.5 ft) above the miner&apos;s head in environments that are dark, dusty and noisy and these deflections are measured in millimeters of movement. To help mitigate the potential for falls of ground injuries to underground stone miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed the Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) to aid in monitoring dangerous levels of roof beam deflection. If enough site-specific information is collected and placed on highly visible maps, individual mining operations could establish general guidelines for responding to specific roof beam deflection occurrences. This would help in implementing a pro-active, comprehensive roof control plan for reducing falls of ground injuries.

Attempts have been made to electroplate titanium and zirconium from aqueous, nonaqueous, and fused-salt electrolytes. Metals were produced only in fused-salt electrolytes, the major product being sponge metal. All other electrolytes gave only partial reduction of the metal ions. Fused alkali borate electrolytes containing titanium salts gave titanium boride powders and coatings of poor adherence. Some of the problems encountered in the deposition of these metals and some of the aspects of titanium and zirconium chemistry involved are discussed. INTRODUCTION Titanium and zirconium are both relatively light, noncorrosive metals with both military and civilian uses. This has led to intensive investigations into the metallurgy of these metals. Both metals are high in the Electrochemical Displacement Series and are difficult to prepare in a pure state. At present they are prepared by reducing their chlorides, using magnesium. Electrolytic reductions have resulted in the preparation of fine powders or sponge of variable quality. It is believed that a good process of electroplating these metals on a baser metal would result in a very desirable product. The objective of the research summarized in this report was to investigate methods of electrodepositing these metals, with the idea of producing uniform, coherent plates. Most of the work was concentrated on titanium, the more abundant of the two metals. A system developed for titanium should be applicable to zirconium owing to their chemical similarity. Information gained from these experiments may also be applicable to the electro-winning of the metal.

"INTRODUCTION During the past 4 or 5 years the frequent occurrence of bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland field, in Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va., has caused much apprehension among miners and mining officials of that region.These bumps have caused many deaths and injuries, and have been increasing in frequency. Eight men were killed and a number injured by bumps in the first 4 months of 1934. Their unpredictable occurrence and the usual absence of any preliminary warning tremors or sounds, such as ordinarily precede a large fall of roof, cause fear of other bumps and impair the morale of mine workers.Acknowledgments This report on bumps in coal mines of the Cumberland coal field of Kentucky and Virginia is based on an investigation made at the urgent request of .the Harlan County Coal Operators Association, through James F. Bryson, director of safety of the association, to the Director of the United States Bureau of Mines, following a series of disastrous bumps in. Harlan County, Ky., and Wise County, Va. The request was granted and the writer detailed to undertake the investigation, which was made in June 1934.The officials of certain operating companies in the Cumberland field gave every facility for examining the conditions accompanying bumps in their mines. This report describes the development and testing of a prototype tunneling machine. Principal efforts were aimed at testing of the fragmentation subsystem of a continuous drill and blast hard rock excavation machine suitable for use in underground mining and tunneling applications. The concept utilizes a unique self -shielding spiral blasting pattern that permits efficient performance with relatively small single shots, while at the same time directing major blast fragments at right angles to the tunnel axis. A major accomplishement was the development of a remote controlled, loading and initiation system in which explosive slurry and a detonator are Simultaneously placed (pumped) into the blasthole via a loading hose. The special electric long-delay detonator is inductively ignited upon emplacement, and the machine remains at the face during the blast.

"INTRODUCTION Byproduct-coke manufacture is one of our country's most essential in¬dustries; its importance was strikingly accentuated by the demands of World War II. This paper reviews recent progress in various phases of byproduct-coke operations for the production of metallurgical coke particularly that used as blast-furnace fuel.In the early days of the by-product-coke industry in the United States high-grade bituminous coking coals, both high-volatile or gas coal and low-volatile Pocahontas coal, were plentiful, and the selection and mixing of coals for coke-oven use were minor problems.The demands of World War I for the production of iron, steel, and coke aroused and stimulated new interest in the investigation of the reserves, characteristics, and properties of our coking coals. During that war the increased demand for coke reached a critical stage, and the shortage of high-grade coking coals necessitated the use of cols of inferior quality and of different coking characteristics than those previously used.The period of prosperity following World War I brought much progress and development in the by-product-coke industry. Methods of testing coal and coke were improved. The search for satisfactory coking coals was continued, and construction and design of byproduct ovens were improved."

The development and status of technology for producing titanium from U.S. resource materials are summarized in this Bureau of Mines report. Commercially feasible processes and investigations of alternative procedures are reviewed in order to identify techniques that could make existing operations more effective or areas in which future research may lead to the development of new production methods. Procedures are described for producing concentrated titanium dioxide from starting materials such as sands, massive deposits, and mineral processing residues containing rutile, ilmenite, and perovskite; producing and purifying titanium tetrachloride from concentrated rutile, ilmenite, and titaniferous slags; reduction of titanium tetrachloride to titanium sponge metal using metallic magnesium or sodium; purifying and consolidating titanium sponge and scrap by arc melting or induction melting techniques; purifying sponge, scrap, and alloys by molten salt electrorefining; and electrowinning titanium from chloride salts.

[The accepted theory of acid formation in coal mines with the subsequent appearance of the acid in coal-mine drainage, is oxidation of iron pyrite and subsequent solution and hydrolysis of the iron sulphate formed. It has also been found that 5 gobbed sections and worked-out areas, where there is usually an abundance of iron pyrite-bearing, materials in contact with air, are the sections that make the most important contribution to the quantity of acid drainage. It would thus seem obvious that if oxygen can be kept out of contact with tae acid-forming materials in tie- sections mentioned the amount of acid in coal-mine drainage could be reduced markedly and corrosion problems with mine pumping equipment and general stream pollution mitigated thereby. Although the efficiency of the suggested remedy as been borne out by laboratory experiments6, it has appeared desirable to substantiate the laboratory work by field observations in so far as pertinent data are available. It has been difficult to learn of mines or sections of mines about to be sealed, whereby an actual comparison of the drainage before and after sealing can be made. In view of that difficulty it has been necessary to devote attention to a comparison of the character of the water from areas already sealed with that from open but otherwise comparable sections of the sane mine. Previous cork has shown that the acidity of drainage in different parts of the same mine may vary, but if it can be shown also that the water from sealed areas is with but fen exceptions less acid than the otherwise similar open sections of tae same mine, the laboratory finding will be supported in a practical gray. This report presents some of the evidence that has been obtained.]

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the oxidation of American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Type 304 stainless steel (SS) during annealing in simulated combustion products from several air-CH4 fuel ratios. Atmospheres representing air-CH4 ratios of 14:1 and 18:1 contained free 02, while atmospheres representing 10:1 air-CH, ratio did not. A Cr203 layer formed on SS samples annealed in atmospheres containing free 0, while a Cr-Fe spinel layer formed in atmospheres with no free 02. The Cr203 layer was adherent and presented a protective barrier to metal diffusion, effectively limiting oxidation of the metal substrate. The Cr-Fe spinel was not protective and allowed the diffusion of Fe through the spinel to the gas-oxide interface where it was oxidized to magnetite, which spalled from the surface. This resulted in thick scale layers on samples annealed in atmospheres containing no free 02, as compared to layers formed on samples annealed in atmospheres containing free 02. These results confirmed and explained industrial operators&apos; observations that thick, smoky (fine spalled magnetite) scales form on SS annealed in low free-02 atmospheres, while thin protective oxide layers form on sheets in atmospheres containing free 02.

An improved parachute-type stopping for changing the course of mine ventilation air during mine emergencies has been developed by Goodyear Aerospace Corporation for The Bureau of Mines. The stopping can be quickly deployed by one man from a single attachment point and provides excellent stopping performance with the flow in the design direction. Adding pin and foam attachments between its skirt and the passage-way surfaces improves its performance with flow in the design direction and maintains the stopping with zero or reverse air flows. Stopping performance results for a range of airway sizes including 7.5 X 10 ft simulated airway with pressure differentials of up to 3.0 inches of water are presented. Predicted performance values for this stopping design for larger passageways are also presented.

The Pilgrim mine, operated by the Pioneer Gold Mining Co., is 9-1/2 miles west of Chloride in the Pilgrim mining district on the eastern slope of the Black Mountains, or River Range, Mohave County, Ariz. In March 1937, 100 tons of gold ore per day were being mined and milled at the property by a total force of 5i men. Climatic conditions allow year-round operations. Due to present activity in the county there is an ample supply of labor for the requirements of the mine. The Pilgrim is the only producing property within s radius of 6 miles; recently, however, the South Pilgrim Mining Co. has launched a development campaign on claims that adjoin the Pioneer Co. property to the south.

Standard smoldering and flaming combustion tests using smaIl coal samples have been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines as a method to evaluate the response of a smoke detector. The tests are con-ducted using a standard smoke box designed and constructed according to Underwriters Laboratories. The tests provide a standard, easily reproducible smoke characteristic for smoldering and flaming coal combustion, based upon a comparison of the smoke optical density and the response of a standard ionization chamber to the smoke. With these standard tests, the range of threshold limits for the response of a smoke detector and the detector&apos;s reliability can be evaluated for nearly identical smoke visibility and smoke physical characteristics. The detector&apos;s threshold response limits and reliability need to be well defined prior to the instrument&apos;s use as part of a mine fire warning system for improved mine safety.

Certification tests for urethane-foam systems and techniques for apply-ing foam safely in mines are described. Fire hazard from foam exists if flame propagates beyond the ignition source or penetrates the foam. Foam that passes the certification tests can be applied on stoppings, continuous sections of ribs of relatively wide passageways (with no foam on the roof), short sections of roof such as overcasts, roof cavities, and intersections (with no foam on the ribs), and between buntons on one wall of a shaft. Foam on the ribs and adjoining roof presents a fire hazard. Stoppings covered with foam passing the certification tests are resistant to penetration of heat, flame, and smoke than similar stopping without foam. Flame propagation can be arrested by water sprays. Spontaneous ignition of foam can be prevented.
