High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is efficient equipment in comminution process. HPGR could be a good option for preparing ball mill feed at the first stage of grinding due to its high efficiency and low energy consumption. Closing with a screen, these mills are utilizing as one of the principle parts in mineral processing industries, especially for iron ores. Recently, HPGRs are working as primary mills at 4 developing lines in Gol-e-Gohar Iron Ore Processing Complex, Iran. Different mechanism of particle crushing in compare to the other tumbling mills makes the HPGR as certain equipment with its own particular controlling parameters. Hydraulic pressure, roller speed and level of material inside feeding hopper are the most important variables influencing grinding efficiency of the HPGR. To figure out how they impress the process and operation situation, different industrial tests were carried out and the best result (d80 about 8 mm for HPGR discharge) was achieved at 180-190 bar pressure (P), 300 rpm speed (S) and 50% of hopper level (L). It is worth noting that this finding has been observed through past pilot test too. We also used design expert method (DX7 software) to develop the best design and analysis the test results, as well. According to the mechanical restriction of HPGR and process limitation in the plant (based on the industrial results), we adjusted value of each parameter in a logical range. Therefore, 20 industrial tests were conducted, as DX7 recommended, and the various impacts of the parameters and their interaction were identified based on statistical analysis. As the authors expected, it was revealed that after presser, roller speed is a critical variable because of its significant role in residence time of the particles between the rollers. The function below has been determined to explain the relation between different parameters and the response.

With a growing emphasis on maximizing the value by rapidly deploying it across their assets, mining firms are eager to identify any issues that may hinder such efforts and to refine their approaches to overcome them. As such a CDE vision can be considered realized when the following components are addressed and functioning as intended - People: the right resources working together and efficiently to achieve shared goals, Process: well-defined workflows mapped out for key value processes, Technology: availability of the correct tools and applications to increase efficiency in work execution and Locations: regional locations/ sites that need to be linked for collaboration and information exchange. For the above vision, an approach that considers the degree of interaction between the roles in metallurgy operations, mineral resource planning, mine engineering, plant operations, logistics and infrastructure, and which accounts for the current technology states across these groups to determine sub-processes where the impact of a CDE will be the most is critical. In effect, CDE is more about transforming an organization?s operational philosophy than a technology driven project. This paper examines the definition and components of a CDE in a mining context. Real-time operations co-ordination, maintenance interventions, production analysis and optimization processes are examined along with current state technologies and manual processes as candidates which are likely to result in most benefits from collaborative work processes. Finally, the paper examines technologies that can be used to further enable a collaborative working environment.

Studies of the dense medium and classifying cyclone have been conducted using the Fluent computational fluid dynamics code. Experimental measurements of the segregation of medium in a DM cyclone by gamma-ray tomography and the performance of a novel classifying cyclone design have been used to test and interpret the 3D CFD predictions. The predictions of the CFD models were generally plausible, though more work is required to incorporate turbulent mixing of the slurry in the cyclone. The benefits of the novel cyclone design were explained by the model in terms of conditions favouring reduction of short-circuiting at the vortex finder, and the removal of the air core from the wall at the apex. Work is continuing.

"Predicting the liberation spectra that are produced from breakage of two-phase ores under the random fracture assumption can be accomplished by measuring the conditional, on length, linear grade distribution directly from images obtained from a representative sample of the unbroken texture. The technique tremendously simplifies the prediction problem by avoiding the multiple convolutions that arise from the traditional method based on a description of texture from a measurement of the chord length distributions associated with each phase in the unbroken texture. For a 3-phase system, the phase transition probabilities associated with the textural information make the traditional calculation an almost insurmountable mathematical problem. The direct measurement procedure on the other hand can be expanded to three phases comparatively easily.A coal sample is used here to demonstrate the procedure. It is concluded that the conditional, on length, linear grade distribution can be predicted in the same fashion for multi-phase systems. Accurate stereological conversion is the practical hurdle to be overcome for multi-phase systems, but it is already a reality for 3- phase systems."

"Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about 2 million tons per year. It is sourced from both sulfide and laterite ore, but currently laterites are becoming more attractive for nickel production due to the depletion of high grade nickel sulfide ores. Laterites are generally processed by hydro or pyro-metallurgy and therefore, pre-concentration of nickel before such processes is very important. In this paper the effect different physical methods (including flotation) on the pre-concentration of nickel in laterite ores will be discussed. The ore used in this study was a laterite from South East Asia. Nickel was upgraded using different methods such as magnetic separation, flotation and sizing. The effect of ore mineralogy on choosing the best strategy to upgrade nickel will be discussed. The findings of this project will help to unlock a substantial volume of nickel with significant value from laterite ores.INTRODUCTION Nickel is an important metal with the total global consumption of about million tons per year which has grown rapidly during last decades (Mackey, 2011). Nickel is sourced from two different types of ores, sulfide and laterite. The majority (about 70%) of the world’s nickel resources occur as laterite ores which are often complex, and low grade, and therefore expensive to treat using conventional methods (Xu et al., 2013). Today, nickel laterites are more attractive for production of nickel as the amount of high grade nickel sulfide ores has diminished (Janwong, 2012). Therefore more economic processes to recover nickel from these resources should be developed.It should be noted that nickel laterite mineralogy is complex, and nickel often presents as ultrafine inclusions in a number of mineral phases. Because of the low nickel concentration and variable distribution in these phases, effective upgrading by physical separation processes would be challenging. Researchers have tried to improve nickel laterite flotation recovery by using a number of feed preparation techniques. A summary of the nickel grades obtained using flotation and magnetic separation as reported in the literature is presented in Table 1. It can be seen that only minor nickel upgrades have been reported. Quast et al. (2015) have concluded that the complex mineralogy of nickel laterite ores makes it difficult to achieve any significant nickel upgrading by physical techniques, including flotation. They achieved 40% increase in the nickel content (from 1.0% to 1.4%) at a nickel recovery of 43% (Quast et al., 2015). Various attempts in USA, New Caledonia, India and Australia, to upgrade nickel in laterite using magnetic separation have not been successful (Quast et al., 2015). A recent comprehensive review on topics influencing nickel laterite flotation has shown that further investigations in the flotation of laterite ores are undoubtedly warranted (Farrokhpay & Filippov, 2016)."

"In recent years, the scale-up of mechanical flotation machines has been attempted with greater frequency. In contrast, the development of rotor-stator designs has been subject to greater inertia. The rotor-stator components are integral to the operation of mechanical flotation machines, responsible for the key physical processes of solids suspension, gas dispersion and energy dissipation. Design modifications are predicated upon the dual purpose of meeting customer needs while achieving metallurgical performance objectives. Accomplishing the latter is a rigorous undertaking, typically involving the sequential application of fluid dynamics principles, prototyping, smaller-scale research screening studies and larger-scale development projects. This industrial evaluation details the final stages of the forced-air rotor-stator development process using a double-refractory Carlin-type gold ore. A bypass stream of the primary rougher feed was further classified into cyclone underflow and overflow products. Four rotor-stator treatments were evaluated using parallel flotation rows coupled with a randomized statistical design. Only two treatments are compared in this initial assessment. Metallurgical responses were measured as a function of the random variation of key machine factors. Machine characterization measurements complemented the analysis of flotation performance indicators."

Synthetic water with a calcium concentration of 80 ppm and 500 ppm was prepared and the flotation results obtained compared to a simple electrolyte in order to determine the effect water quality has on pentlandite and pyroxene surface alteration and, ultimately, floatability. During the study, the possible effect of interactions between the minerals investigated and Ca2+ ions in the presence of sodium isobutyl xanthate was studied at pH 6 and pH 9 by means of zeta potential determinations, microflotation tests and ToF-SIMS analysis. The results obtained have demonstrated that water quality does play a significant role in flotation recovery at the experimental conditions used.

"The small recovery of Ag, often in the order of 50%, by traditional flotation and leaching process strategies is closely related to the complicated and heterogeneous nature of Ag-bearing minerals with Ag typically being associated with numerous minerals within any given ore-body. Moreover, grain sizes may be extremely fine with micron-scale common. In order to design cost-effective Ag-bearing mineral flotation and leach recovery strategies it is firstly necessary to characterise the speciation of Ag and its correlation with other elements, e.g., Cu, As and Sb, within the ore matrix and process streams. The traditional QEM-SCAN analytical approach can prove problematic for some mineralogies due to difficulties in recognising degrees of crystallinity, polymorphs, complex solid solution series, high value trace element mineralogy, very fine grained materials; and the requirement for a comprehensive data base. Moreover, there is difficulty ‘seeing’ either surface films or surface contaminants which can both lead to poor flotation performance. There is therefore clearly a need to develop confirmatory and complementary approaches when these uncertainties arise. Synchrotron X-ray microprobe analysis provides a powerful tool for the mineralogical characterisation of finely segregated heterogeneous Ag-containing materials. These measurements enable comprehensive characterisation of the Ag-bearing components using synchrotron microprobe X-ray fluorescence mapping (µ-XFM), X-ray diffraction (µ-XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (µ-XAS). Further analytical strength is provided by principal component analysis of laboratory ToF-SIMS data which enables the statistical identification of correlated surface species enabling examination of surface chemical characteristics responsible for mis-reporting of Ag containing components within flotation streams. We describe the application of these techniques to a selected Ag-containing feed and tail and demonstrate how these compliment and extend traditional analytical methodologies."

Today, large size mechanical flotation cells of 100 to 300 m3 are used in rougher operation in different flotation industrial plants, in Chile and worldwide. However, in spite of the advances in fundamental research and the notable growing in equipment size, with more complete instrumentation systems, there are still a lack of reliable data for industrial flotation modeling and simulation to advance in better control systems design. In this work, a model of a rougher flotation circuit, based on operating variables and parameters fitted from industrial data, obtained in some previous work, is used to develop a set of logic rules in order to aid operating decisions. The simulator was first used to sensitize the effect of changing the froth depth profile on target variables, and then to find out the best profile to reject common disturbances coming into the plant. The flotation circuit simulator was redesigned to incorporate an expert system following the proposed control algorithm. Several tests were performed to evaluate the control responses to different correlated series of input variables, such as feed grade, tonnage, particle size distribution, and solid percentage. "A lot of floatation reagents (collectors, inhibitors and regulators) for the beneficiation of copper ores have been well developed in the past century. However, it is still unclear about the micro interaction mechanism of these flotation reagents with copper ores. In this paper, the interaction mechanism of these flotation reagents with the copper atom on chalcopyrite has been systematically investigated by first principle DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Thirty-four specific common functional groups linked with the same hydrocarbon chain (ethyl) are optimized at a B3LYP/def2-TZVP level, the solvation effect was included with the SMD solvation model. The analysis of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO), the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and nature bond orbital (NBO) charge of these reagents reveals their potential applications to other types of copper-bearing mineral. Further investigation of the thermodynamics calculations gives more reliable data to screen collectors or inhibitors for copper-bearing mineral. The flotation results from carefully reviewed literatures are in good agreement with the calculation results. This work might also shed new light on the development and discovery of highly efficient and selective flotation reagents with low cost based on the computational methods.INTRODUCTION Froth flotation,(Shean & Cilliers, 2011) a mineral processing approach, is applied to efficiently enrich valuable minerals from the mixture, which is achieved according to the dictinctive surface properties of minerals. In the past century, researchers have develped an aboundant of flotation reagents by extraction or synthetize, and many carefully selected reagents might die in the bench tests or the pilot tests before the pratice.(Bulatovic & SrdjanM, 2007) Generally, it involves a lot of cost and tedious works by conducting flotation tests to screen flotation reagents. Flotation reagents have been boomed robustly with the developing of the organic synthesis.(Liu, Yang, & Zhong, 2017) Reseachers found the specific properties of a reagent are determined by its functional groups and the length of the hydrocarbon, where the functional group is assigned as the adsorption site to adsorb onto mineral surfaces and the hydrocarbon chain is called as a hydrophobic group."

An investigation of the seeding mechanism using heterocoagulation and the Derjaguin - Landau - Verwey - Overbeek (DLVO) theory of two pure minerals is the objective of this study. The seed was silica with modal diameters of 4.529 µm (fine particles) and 5.216 µm (coarse particles) and the test powder was hematite with a modal diameter of 0.883 µm. Parameters included variations in the concentration and particle size of silica. Both particles were first subjected to size determination and settling tests via Stoke’s Law. The silica-hematite system was then suspended in 0.001 M KNO3 electrolyte solutions where pH was adjusted. Afterward, the suspension was agitated and was allowed to settle at different time intervals while obtaining turbidity readings. Results through settling time and turbidity vs. pH graphs indicate that maximum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 2 to 5 while minimum heterocoagulation occurs from pH 6 to 7. At these pH levels the zeta potentials of silica and hematite are negative and positive, respectively. On the contrary, repulsive forces dominate the system from pH 8 to 11 due to the particles’ negative zeta potentials. Furthermore, the attachment of hematite to silica increases when the parameters become larger thereby increasing the effectivity of heterocoagulation at acidic to neutral pH levels.

The concept of sustainable development resting on three pillars of economics, environment and social development has become an increasingly important factor in the European mining sector and a major influence on the related policies of the European Commission. Members of European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to the principles which promote sustainable development. A successful minerals planning policy should create the legal administrative environment that is necessary to ensure the sustainable supply of minerals to society within the framework of sustainable development. Members of the European mining industry shall conduct their activities according to principles which promote sustainable development. The challenge for sustainability is to find a balance between securing minerals supply, protecting the environment and achieving social progress. The point of balance depends on the range of policies adopted by governments. In this paper the development of the sustainability of the mining sector in EU and the social component of sustainability in the mineral industry is discussed.

"In 2015 in the frames of federal special-purpose program «National system of chemical and biosafety of Russian Federation (2009-2014)» Federal State Budget Educational Institution of Higher Education ""Irkutsk National Research Technical University” (further–INRTU) performed works aimed at disposal of accumulated arsenical residues at industrial site of the former Angarsk arsenical plant (AAP) processing arsenious ores from Svirsk town in Irkutsk region. The plant in 1934-1949 produced arsenic trioxide for the defence industry. Prior to starting the works on disposal of industrial pollution focus the total amount of cinders stored on 13 ha of industrial site of AAP was 156 900 tons with 1% average arsenic content. Close to the cinders there were also remains of industrial buildings and process equipment in the amount of 6 600 m3 that contained 150 tons of arsenic. Additional source of pollution at the industrial site of AAP is contaminated soil amounted to 48 000 tons. Proven reserves of gold and silver in the cinders were 6.1 and 47 g/t respectively. In 2015 the source of arsenious pollution was detoxificated according to mineral matrix technology and stored in a special landfill with separate stocking of gold-containing cinder and other arsenious residues. This technology of waste disposal specifies extraction of valuable metals from cinder in future. The similar case is with Vershino-Darasunsky settlement in Trans-Baikal Territory where the abandoned industrial site of the former arsenic plant is located in the central part of the settlement. The concentration of arsenic and valuable components can be compared to the concentration at AAP. Since 2016 the demand for removal of such industrial pollution sources is legislated due to amendments in Federal Law No. 7-FZ on environmental protection. It results in a real possibility to remove such dangerous industrial residues deposits as the one located in Vershino-Darasunsky settlement. Coal preparation plants usually operate with water in a closed circuit mode. In this practice, large quantities of water is continuously being recycled. To compensate the natural losses, only small quantity of fresh make up water is added into the circuit. As a result, a gradual build up of residual concentrations of flotation reagents (frothers, collectors, coagulates etc.) take place in the water and the concentration levels of the contaminants increase. Besides, the recycled water accumulates higher amounts of total dissolved components (1600 ppm) and hardness (740 ppm) than the fresh water. Nearly 80 ? 85% of the process water used in a coal preparation plant is utilized in treating the coal fines in flotation circuit. The presence of certain alkali earth metal ions (e.g., Ca++, Mg++) may adversely affect the flotation performance as they precipitate sparingly soluble hydroxyl complexes on the coal surface and change its surface charge. These studies showed that the use of recycled water in flotation has a significant effect on the selectivity and kinetics of the flotation process because, the dissolved compounds, both inorganic and organic, alter the chemistry radically. By treating the recycled water through a softening process, the concentrations of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced significantly. The concentration of alkali earth metals and hardness were reduced to 10 ppm and 35 ppm respectively in the softened recycle water. From the selectivity studies, it has been observed that the flotation yield and recoveries increased by four to seven units by softening the recycled water. The kinetic studies indicated that the clean coal particles followed first-order kinetics. The kinetic parameters namely, flotation rate constant (k) and maximum recoveries (R8) of flotation, were found higher with softened recycle water than the recycled water. This reduces the residence time in the flotation cell and thereby, increases its productivity. For a correct evaluation of the performance of any process, it is important to reconcile the data gathered in the plant from the material balance point of view for all the streams flowing in and flowing out of the process unit. There are two main approaches to reconciliation of data, which involve minimization of the sum of the squares of: (i) the closure residuals and (ii) the component adjustments; both weighed with the estimated variances of the components. Though, these approaches have served us well, it has not been possible to ascertain if the reconciled values for various components and the split factors obtained using these approaches are truly the best estimates. In this paper, this aspect has been investigated by analyzing pseudo-experimental data of known error structure on size classification of particles in a hydrocyclone. Three types of basic error structures were considered for the measured component values: absolute error, relative error and chi-square error. The error structure was modified by adding a random component of error using normally distributed random numbers corresponding to zero mean and different levels of variance. By carrying out a large number of simulation experiments, it has been shown that in the presence of random errors, irrespective of the basic error structure of data, which is usually unknown, the chi-square error minimization criterion can be used to obtain most reliable results. "Understanding adsorption mechanism of polymeric organic process modifierssuch as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on talc hasbeen a major challenge due to anisotropic nature of talc basal planes and edge surfaces. The main objective of this study is to investigate the adsorption of CMC on the basal planes and edge surfaces of talc.Smooth basal plane and edge surfaces of talc were prepared successfully by simple cleavage and sophisticated ultramicrotome cutting method, respectively. The prepared surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging to be sufficiently smooth for colloidal probe force measurements using AFM. Anisotropic surface charge characteristics were determined,with the basal planes to carry a permanent negative surface charge and edge surfaces featuring a pH-dependent charge characteristic. The adsorption of CMC on talc basal plane and edge surfaces at pH 9 in KClaqueous solutions of various ionic strengths wasinvestigated by in situ AFM imaging technique. Themorphology of adsorbed CMC on talc basal planes and edge surfaces was found to be significantly different, due to different binding mechanisms involved. Interaction of CMC with the talc basal plane was found to bedominated by hydrophobic interactions while its binding with the talc edge surface was mainly through chemical complexation and hydrogen bond. The amount of CMC adsorbed on both talc basal planes and edge surfaces increased with increasing ionic strengthof solutions. The methodology developed in our study opens the door to probe polymer adsorption on anisotropic phyllosilicate surfaces, which can help us better understand the mechanism of polymer adsorption on specific mineral faces."

A practical an interactive model to describe the operation of a flotation bank of mechanical cells was developed based on the hydrodynamic and metallurgical characterization of large industrial flotation cells. Thus, the mineral grade and recovery, as well as the stream properties along the flotation bank can be described in terms of the operating variables. The model was built considering the flotation bank as a distributed system, so the solution for the water and solids mass balances, per size classes, for each single cell, are sequentially solved. Also, each cell was described by two distinct zones, the collection zone characterized by the flotation rate constant and the froth zone characterized by the froth recovery. The mineral feed was described in terms of the mineral species and particle size classes, using a rectangular flotation rate constant distribution. Also, the effect of changing the actual operating variables (air flowrate, pulp level, pulp density, pulp flowrate, etc.) on the mineral collection process, in the collection (pulp) zone, was considered downstream along the bank. The froth recovery of floatable mineral has been estimated by measuring the mass flowrate of particles entering the froth by true flotation together with the concentrate mass flowrate (ton/h). The mass flowrate of collected particles at the pulp/froth interface level was calculated from direct measurement of bubble load (ton/m3) and gas flowrate (m3/h). Flotation recovery is mainly related to the froth depth and air flowrate. All parameters considered in the model have been adjusted from direct measurements in plant site. Also, the effects of other operating variables such as reagents dosage, top of froth grade, or froth discharge velocity are presently under study. This procedure has been tested using data from industrial rougher operations consisting of flotation banks with 5 cells to 9 cells in series, and different cell sizes, such as 45m3, 130m3, 160m3 and 250m3. Thus, it has been shown that the model approach is a powerful tool for flotation cells diagnosis, operation and development of new control strategies, as well as, to evaluate the effect that de-sign and operating variables have upon the collection and froth zones performance in large flotation cells.

"Triboelectric separation of ilmenite ore based on the tribocharge differences between ilmenite and gangue minerals was conducted in this study. Triboelectric characteristics of ilmenite and its associated minerals were studied using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), pentatricopeptide repeats (PPR), copper, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), stainless steel (SS), teflon and quartz glass (QG) tribochargers in lab triboelectric unit. Results demonstrated that the ilmenite particles tribocharged positively while gangue minerals tribocharged negatively using PVC as tribocharger. The particle size also has a significant effect on tribocharge, and the -0.125+0.074 mm is the optimal size fraction of triboelectric separation. Charge-mass ratios of minerals increase with the increases of tribocharging length, but the increasing rate gradually reduce. At 1.5 m tribocharging length, charge-mass ratios of ilmenite, quartz, feldspar and mica are up to 6.07 nC/g, -6.05 nC/g, -4.30 nC/g and -4.56 nC/g, respectively. Based on the triboelectric characteristics of each mineral, triboelectric separation of ilmenite was conducted, and the grade of ilmenite ore increased from 15.47% to 28.40%. INTRODUCTION As a transition metal titanium plays an irreplaceable role in medical, aerospace and materials due to its light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. Pure titanium dioxide is an excellent white pigment and is widely applied in industries of paint and textile. Ilmenite is the main raw material for titanium industry. For the beneficiation of ilmenite, series methods have been proposed, such as the application of dry magnetic and wet gravity separations to separate the ilmenite from the zircon and rutile. Electrostatic separation is extensively used in the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands for the recovery of rutile, zircon and ilmenite while flotation is used to separate fine ilmenite (Mehdilo et al., 2014; Fan et al., 2014). Compared with flotation and gravity separation, electrostatic separation does not consume water, and native properties of materials will not be changed and energy consumption will be reduced (Wang et al., 2014). Thus, the wide application of electrostatic separation and other dry separation methods is a trend in separation and purification industry, especially in water-scarce areas."

The feed ore is the concentrate of low intensity magnetic separation of pyrite tailings, containing TFe47.47%, S19.41% and SiOpyrrhotite. The exploratory tests showed that using a process of flotation followed by magnetic separation could respectively obtain a sulphur concentrate of S 31.08% with a recovery of 82.89%, and an iron concentrate of TFe 59.97% and S 9.52%with a recovery of 30.93%. The reason of iron concentrates with high sulphur grade was that the sulphur grade of flotation tailings was 7.03%. So enhanced flotation for pyrrhotite was investigated in this research. Results show that when the natural pH of ore pulp varied from 5.5 to 6.0, a reagent combination of FS, LH, and BJ displayed the optimum flotation performance for pyrrhotite. After comparisons made on different flotation processing, the previous flotation flow of ?one roughing, one cleaning, one scavenging system and middling reprocessing?, was found, among others, to have the best flotation effect, as the grade and recovery of sulphur concentrate were 31.08% and 82.89%, respectively, and sulphur content of the flotation tailings was 7.03%. The above results indicated it was difficult to raise further the effect of flotation desulphurization. The authors therefore suggested that oxidizing roast should be adopted following the magnetic process for the purpose of further desulphurization. Besides, flue gas containing SO2 8.25%. And the valuable minerals are magnetite and 2 generated from roasting could be reused for sulphuric acid production. Keywords: pyrrhotite, enhanced flotation, desulphurization
