Magnesium-based alloys are of growing interest for many industrial applications due to their favourable strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability. Mass reduction has advantages in many industrial sectors for example, in automotive, a reduction in mass improves fuel economy and can lead to more efficient mechanical systems by reducing the weight of moving parts like wheels, gears, pistons. However, the relatively poor corrosion and wear resistance limits the use of magnesium and its alloys in many potential applications. The patented Keronite® plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process enables manufacturers to overcome such problems and, in its latest generation equipment has been developed to industrial realisation for high volume production. This paper presents microstructural characteristics and corrosion performance of two most widely used high pressure die-cast magnesium alloys AZ91D and AM6OB with a duplex corrosion protection coating system that comprised a thin Keronite pre-treatment followed by a subsequent automotive grade final powder coat.

"A heptapeptide library displayed on M13 bacteriophages (phages) was screened to identify peptide sequences able to selectively bind to gold, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, pyrite, and silica ores, and to evaluate phage potential as bioflotation reagents. Many peptide sequences were isolated through biopanning and differed from known sequences. Adsorption isotherms were determined and a receptor/ligand interaction model was identified and used to compare affinity of peptide sequences toward ores. Some phage sequences have slightly lower affinity to sphalerite than other sulphides. Adsorption was higher on sulphides than on silica. Induction time measurements suggested filamentous M13 phages lower hydrophobicity of the ore surface.RÉSUMÉ Une librairie d’heptapeptides présentés sur des bactériophages M13 (phages) a été criblée afin d’identifier les séquences peptidiques affinitaires à des minerais d’or, de chalcopyrite, de sphalérite, de pyrite et de silice et d’évaluer le potentiel de ces phages en tant que de bio-réactifs de flottation. De nombreuses séquences peptidiques ont été isolées par bio-criblage et différenciées d’autres séquences connues. Des isothermes d’adsorption ont été déterminées et un modèle d’interaction récepteur–ligand a été identifié et utilisé pour comparer l’affinité des séquences peptidiques par rapport aux minerais. Certaines séquences de phages possèdent une affinité légèrement inférieure pour la sphalérite comparativement aux autres sulfures. L’adsorption sur les sulfures était plus élevée que sur la silice. Des mesures de temps d’induction suggèrent que les phages filamenteux M13 diminuent l’hydrophobicité de la surface des minerais."

"Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) has become the mainstream technology for ultra-heavy oil recovery in Xinjiang oilfield, the success of which depends heavily on shortening of preheating period as well as forming homogeneous and highly permeable zone in land-facies oilsands layer. Towards this aim a special hydraulic fracturing process is required, which is accomplished through controlled water injection to a pair of horizontal wells in order to create homogenously distributed microcracks in the zone between the two wells. The associated mechanical response, however, is unclear for land-facies Karamay oilsands that is loose in texture. In this regard, this research utilizes a triaxial test system on cylindrical specimens extracted from field-collected oilsands cores. Isotropically consolidated drained triaxial compression tests are conducted on both saturated and unsaturated specimens so as to investigate the mechanical response of oilsands at different spots relative to the wellbore. Moreover, acoustic emission and fast pulse-decay permeability are performed to monitor fracture development and permeability evolution. Based on these experimental studies, the mechanism of dilation in oilsands is comprehensively analyzed. The findings reveal distinctive behavior between the saturated and unsaturated specimens as respect to dilation, porosity/volumetric evolution and change of permeability. It is also found that shear bands can be created upon shearing on triaxial specimens, rendering porosity or volumetric strain the factor that is more proper for evaluation of stimulation efficiency in the field.INTRODUCTIONXinjiang oilfield is widely known for its abundant deposit of heavy and ultra-heavy oil that has been estimated to be several hundred million tons. The ultra-heavy oil deposit located in Fengcheng region of Karamay at the northwestern part of the Junggar Basin, Xinjiang, China, has over 360 million tons of resource (Yuan et al. 2013). The resource is deposited in depths from 180 to 450 m and has viscosity over 100, 000 mPa•s at a temperature of 50ºC, bringing technical challenges to recovery activities."

The kinetics of the oxidation of uranium(IV) by oxygen gas in aqueous systems is dependent on acid concentration, oxygen partial pressure, and temperature. In order to better understand the relationship between these variables and the speed of oxidation, a series of experiments have been conducted where each parameter has been varied in turn. Data were collected continuously using UVVis spectroscopy, allowing for a detailed examination of the reaction rate over the course of each experiment. The data fit an overall apparent rate law that is 1.5order in uranium(IV), -2order in H+, first order in oxygen, and unaffected by uranium(VI). This relationship does not appear to hold for solutions with <0.2 mol/L initial acid, where a different kinetic mechanism appears to be dominant.

Non-contacting, radioisotope density and level gauges are discussed. The characteristics of the more commonly used isotopes, the techniques of detection and the methods of presenting information are reviewed. The gauge parameters of accuracy, response time and long-term stability are tabulated with reference to calibration techniques and operating requirements. Automatic control systems, both pneumatic and electrical, are used in conjunction with density gauges on filter feeds, and in thickener underflow and heavy media processes. These systems are described. Procedures for installation, start-up and operator training are outlined, along with considerations of preventative maintenance and service requirements. Typical gauge system costs, including capital expenditure, installation, start-up and service, are presented, wherever possible, in order to provide a basis of comparison with more conventional systems.

At the Sullivan Mine, recent experience with sulphide fires, locally referred to as " hot muck", has necessitated extensive modifications to pillar mining design and operating procedures. Potentially hot pillars are now being designed and mined to prevent fires. Unusual safety hazards and difficulties are encountered in working with, and adjacent. to, existing pillar fires. Operating procedures developed for these conditions have proved successful for safe and continuing production. These changes have minimized the impact of hot ore on current operations and have promise for an improved future.

Subsequently, the problems associated with conventional scaling methods are discussed as well as recent developments in mechanized hand-held scaling devices and methods of loose detection. The elements of the scaling process are further analyzed. In subsequent sections of this paper, the conception and design of a mechanized scaling device, developed at Universite Laval is described. The results of field tests conducted in Quebec hard rock mines are presented. The experimental findings show that the mechanized hand-held scaling device shows great potential in improving the productivity and safety of underground mining operations."

The iron- and elemental sulphur-rich residues generated during batch and continuous pressure oxidative leaching of Inco Limited&apos;s Voisey&apos;s Bay nickel sulphide concentrate at 150°C in sulphate-chloride media have been characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. The residues produced during the continuous leaching of the pentlandite- and pyrrhotite-rich concentrate consisted predominantly of hematite and elemental sulphur, with minor amounts of goethite. Although the iron species generated in the batch leaching tests were similar to those formed during continuous leaching, the morphologies of the hematite and goethite particles were significantly different. In addition to the tiny spheroids and bubble-like particles, the hematite and goethite generated during batch leaching occurred as larger "hollow" shell-like particles that contained residual pentlandite or sulphur cores. Although the leach solution from which the iron oxides had precipitated contained 5-15 g/L sodium, sodium jarosite was detected only in trace amounts in a few of the leach residues.

SINCE 1934 there has been a marked revival of interest in the Porcupine district, especially in the eastern portion of the area, where exploration on the property of Pamour Gold Mines has indicated the presence of extensive gold-bearing deposits. Owing to the prevalence of overburden and the limited amount of exploratory work that has been done, little information is available as yet concerning the distribution and structural relationships of the rocks in the area to the east of Porcupine lake. In order to throw some light on the structural conditions in this section, a brief discussion of the sequence and character of the formations in the better known, producing section of the camp has been included. It should be emphasized that this paper is a preliminary study and that, consequently, the conclusions expressed should not be regarded as final. The writer wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to P. C. Benedict, whose study of the geological relationships on the Foley-O&apos;Brien property has made possible a fuller understanding of the structure in the central portion of the area. "The Pierre Beauchemin gold deposit, situated 15 km NW of Rouyn-Noranda, produces an average of 1050 tonnes of ore a day. Reserves are 1.2 Mt grading 5.6 g/t Au. The deposit, located in a shear zone within the Flavrianpluton, in the Blake River Group, is hosted by four major rock types: meta-trondhjemite, meta-tonalite, hybrid rocks and meta-diorite (the prefu; ""meta-"" is omitted thereafter). The trondhjemite, tonalite, and metamorphic hybrid rocks are spatially distributed as a series of sub-horizontal tabular sills that form a genetically related group. Early fractures that permitted either the emplacement of pre-diorite felsic dikes or the formation of a visible alteration caused by early fluid circulation might have been developed in response to initial strain created during regional deformation. These fractures were precursors to the emplacement of diorite and the development of major shear planes. Sub-horizontal north-trending en échelon diorite lenses are observed at the mine. Together, these diorite lenses constitute larger scale diorite zones which are observed at the scale of the pluton. The diorite zones are interpreted as evidence of an episode of sub-vertical extension sustained by the layered trondhjemite, tonalite and hybrid system. The anisotropy created by the less competent sub-horizontal en échelon diorite was an important factor. In shear zone development and subsequent mineralization. The tonalite and diorite accommodated further defomation and developed the main N030°/40° ESE shears along with the spatially associated N060°/50°-60° SSE, and the N000°/10°-40° E shear zones. The N000° shears are interpreted as refracted or deflected equivalents of the N030° shears. The combined shears compose the Eldrich shear system which trends approximately N030°/40° ESE and has had a general reverse movement with a minor sinistral component.Gold mineralization occurs in all four major rock types as en échelon sigmoidal shaped lenses associated with the major N030° deformation system. The distribution of ore lenses can be divided into two categories: The first category occupies sub-horizontal diorite zones. The lenses trend N-S, dip 100 40° E, and are associated with shear zones, sub-horizontal fractures or tonalite-diorite contact planes. The second category of lenses is found in felsic granitic rocks; the lenses trend either N0300!40°ESE or N060°/50°-60° SSE. Local hydraulic breccia zones are observed near ore zones occupying felsic granitic rocks. These breccias may have resulted from high fluid pressures brought upon by confinement as a result of impermeable zones in an anisotropic tonalite-diorite system."

The Mount Wright iron are mine and upgrading plant were brought on line in the fall of 1975. The mine is located near the Quebec - Labrador border some six hundred miles northeast of Montreal. This paper describes the crushing, grinding and concentrating facilities at Mount Wright, and some design: criteria used in equipment selection and flow sheet design. Also mentioned are some "asbuilt" modifications. A brief description of the over-all flowsheet is also included. Introduction IN SEPTEMBER 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company started development of the Mount Wright iron ore mine. The estimated are reserve is in excess of 1,000,000 ,000 long tons of concentrates, with an average crude are grade of 31.5% Fe. The run-of-mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production r ate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material, of which 50% is waste.

Comminution is the science of size reduction of brittle materials. It is integral to mineral extraction and is one of the most energy intensive processes in the mining industry. There are a number of tests used to quantify the strength of ore, which are then used to size the AG / SAG mill in circuit design. The calculated energy utilized for breakage in these devices is based on the assumptions that the materials treated are of average shape and that the processing equipment is designed to break the ore as efficiently as possible under the given operating conditions. In drop weight tests, it was found that shape significantly influences the measured rock strength. Controlled experiments with variations in blends of rock shape show that mill throughput increases with the addition of weaker shaped rocks.

The design of the long-hole sublevel mining method was originally based on the traditional assumption that the principal load was due to the weight of the overlying rock, and that the horizontal stresses are equal to one-third of the vertical stress. However, as mining progressed, the virgin lateral stress was found to be equal to or greater than the vertical stress. The virgin stress in the rock mass is not uniform throughout the folded orebody and adjacent strata. From detailed investigations, three basic patterns of virgin stress in ore panels have been inferred: uniform, bent and twisted. Stresses induced by stoping are up to three times greater than original stresses in the rock mass; they cause heavy ground conditions and make extraction of ore difficult. In the last ten years, the original mining system has been modified several times in order to destress the ground and improve the extraction of ore.

YOU have been kind enough to ask me to speak to you on "The War and Anglo-American Relations." A speaker always takes the liberty of putting his own interpretation on the scope of his subject. I am going to exercise that privilege, and try to look back over a generation of Anglo-American relationships and forward beyond the present war. I should like particularly to consider responsibilities as well as relationships. A more accurate caption for what I am going to say would be "Anglo-American Responsibilities.?? THE WAR WILL BE WON I am assuming that sooner or later we shall win this war. History and economics point to the same conclusion, that Germany has attempted the impossible and that the seeds of defeat are already sown. As to one ecof1:omic factor, I am already on public record as believing that Germany&apos;s oil supply is inadequate for the war she has launched. That opinion is unchanged. Aside from such tangible factors, moreover, I am convinced that the spirit of freedom is unquenchable, and that no combination of powers will be able to rout it from the British Commonwealth of Nations and the United States. Stronger even than this conviction is my faith in a God who will not suffer the defeat of man&apos;s aspiration to be master of his own soul. I am sure that all of you share that faith, and that we need not argue it. We can start with the assumption that the war will end in victory. The subject we are to consider, then, is the relationship of the English-thinking peoples during the conflict, and their joint responsibilities in the difficult days that will follow it. A CANADIAN-AMERICAN No talk on such a subject is worth listening to unless the audience knows the background and fundamental beliefs of the speaker. No human statement stands alone; behind and beside and within it are the ideals and the bias of the man who makes it. Because I am a stranger to most of you, I am constrained to talk about myself before I talk about more important matters. The review may be profitable, not because of the subject, but because it may illustrate the evolution of an attitude toward England.

The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren&apos;s mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. With the progressive exhaustion of ore deposits easily discovered by surface prospecting, the attention of scientists is being turned more and more to the employment of mechanical means for the location of ore bodies whose outcrops are not visible. The dip needle, the Eotvos Torsion balance, and various methods of electrical prospecting are illustrative of the modem tendency. Interest in the possibility of applying electricity to the solution of many of the prospector&apos;s problems dates much farther back than is usually realized. The first person to notice an abnormal intensity of electrical activity in the region of certain ore bodies was an Englishman, R. W. Fox, who experimented on the Cornwall copper and tin veins about 1830. Dr. Barus, in the United States, carried the early experiments a step further in his work on the deposits of Eureka, Nevada, about 1880. He made the very definite suggestion that the phenomena noticed would be of material aid to the prospector. Not until Professor Schlumberger, of the Ecole des Mines, Paris, took up the matter, shortly before the war, was any definite effort made to put electrical prospecting on a commercial basis. His work resulted in the establishment of sound principles and practicable field technique, for two distinct methods of prospecting.

"Time-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a wellknown phenomenon. In shales and mudstones with a higher salt concentration in the pore fluid than the ambient fluid, the outward gradient generates an osmotic pressure which acts as the driving force for swelling. The swelling phenomenon appears to be related to ion exchange between the rock porewater and the surrounding water.The swelling potential is expressed as the percent swelling strain that occurs per log cycle of time, in either the vertical (perpendicular to bedding) or horizontal (parallel to bedding) directions. In addition, the swelling potential is also noted to be stress dependent. In practice, therefore, the conditions required for swelling are (i) the accessibility to water, and (ii) an outward salt concentration gradient from pore fluid of the rock to the ambient fluid. The relief of in-situ rock stress during excavation serves an initiating mechanism (Lo and Micic, 2010).INTRODUCTIONTime-dependent swelling deformation of several shaley rock formations in Ontario is a well-known phenomenon.
