"DURING the dark ages, the cherished dream of chemists was to find a process for converting base metal into gold. Many a wealthy-but-gullible patron lost a fortune in the search. Men who work with metals today are a bit more realistic. I haven't heard of a metallurgist who expects to develop any one alloy that will resist all corrosive media. In the field of stain-less steels, there are about forty different types of alloys that are used where corrosion is a •problem.A stainless product is ordinarily selected because it offers one or more of the following qualities:(1) Resistance to corrosion (2) Resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (3) Good mechanical properties at room temperature (4) Good mechanical properties at high or low temperature (5) Attractive appearance (6) Ease of maintenanceToday we are interested in discussing the stainless steel family of alloys because of their .ability to resist corrosion. We• will not try to explain the Theory of Corrosion. Let us assume that, when surface potential and oxide formations are properly controlled, iron will resist attack in various chemi.cal solutions. The addition of alloying elements to iron does this for stainless steels. The principal stainless alloys used by various Canadian industries are listed in the accompanying Table."

"The Galore Creek copper deposits are situated in the Stikine River district, 640 miles northwest of Vancouver, British Columbia. The deposits are primary cupriferous replacements localized in highly fractured zones lying in altered sedimentary, extrusive and intrusive rocks near the contacts of a potash-rich syenite porphyry complex which forms the core of a structural dome in Upper Triassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks. Ten deposits are distributed over an area of 3.5 by 2 miles and through an elevation range of 4,000 feet. The deposits share many of the characteristic features common to both the porphyry copper type of mineralization and pyrometasomatic deposits.Primary mineralization includes chalcopyrite and bornite, and is associated principally with pyrite and magnetite. The daminant alteration products are hydrothermal biotite and potash feldspar. Gypsum, anhydrite, garnet, chlorite and carbonate are commonly associated with sulphide minerals. Copper oxides, al-though present, are quantitatively of minor importance. The distribution of certain of the primary minerals reveals hypogene zoning characteristics.The results of stream sediment surveys, and airborne magnetic, ground magnetic and induced polarization surveys show important relationships to geologic structure and mineral deposits."

"In today's operating and investment climate, project evaluation is both more important and more difficult. It is more important because economic and financial analyses of a proposed project provide a basis for judgment of a project's commercial viability by equity participants, lenders and, in some cases, other participants such as off takers and governments. It is more difficult because these analyses must, of necessity, be based on estimates, projections and evaluations which must be made in a period remarkable for its economic and political uncertainty.Project evaluation starts with the analysis of the engineering, commercial and financial information available. Beginning with the preliminary design and capital cost estimates, alternative financing plans can be developed outlining possible sources of funds, terms and security arrangements. Pro-forma financial statements can also be developed, including sources and uses of funds, cash flow schedules, income statements and balance sheets. With these results, various profitability measures can be determined.Subsequently, in an effort to deal with uncertainty, these results can be tested by measuring the impact on project viability and profitability of changes in project and external variables such as product process, mining and processing rates, operating and financing costs, currency exchange rates and other factors.The results are a number of financial projections reflecting different assumptions for key project parameters. The projections can be used to structure the project to achieve the maximum financial performance. Projects, the financial viability and profitability of which can be demonstrated under varying market conditions, will be the most competitive in capital markets."

A study of the interfacial properties of the basal plane and the edge surfaces of talc is described in this paper. The isoelectric point measured at the two different crystallographic planes by the streaming potential method was found to be similar and exists at about pH 3.0. In the case of the edge surface the zeta potential increases at higher pH values which can be attributed to the hydration of magnesium ions at the edge surface. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) colloidal probe technique was used to measure interaction forces. For such experiments a 20 um talc particle was attached to the AFM cantilever and forces between the edge of the talc particle and two different crystallographic planes of talc were measured at various pH values. These measurements, while being qualitative due to the poorly characterized contact area, show differences between the properties of the base plane and edge of the talc and correspond to the results from streaming potential measurements. Finally, the differences in the hydration of the basal plane and the edge of talc are revealed from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The basal plane of the talc is much less hydrated than the edge, as can be seen from the water density distribution functions, which correlate quite well with the contact angle measurements at the basal plane surface and the edge surface of the talc sample.

In Canada, although some research on extraction metallurgy is carried out by the universities and by government, the primary responsibility for the research necessary to the mining industry rests on the industry it-self. Automation is coming more slowly to the mining industry than to others, partly because of the problems of instrumentation. Operations research methods are, however, coming into use. Some new developments in the extraction of aluminum, in iron and steel, in pyrometallurgy and in pressure leaching of nickel, copper, zinc and lead are briefly outlined. Mention is made of uranium and the reactive metals. The importance of the by-product metals, notably antimony, bismuth, gallium, germanium, indium and tellurium, in the development of the electronics industry is also mentioned. The trend toward co-operative research by groups of producers, to develop markets for their products, is noted. In conclusion, there are a greater number of trained scientists, as well as larger amounts of scientific knowledge, available to the mineral industry than ever before, and, if properly used, this will result in great benefits to the industry and to Canada.

The science of low temperature engineering is well entrenched in mining. Uses for common cryogens, including liquid oxygen (LOX), liquid nitrogen (LN2), and liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the gas and minerals industries are reviewed. Potential future applications are discussed within the scope of mining, particularly in refrigeration and ventilation. The second part of this paper focuses on the Linde cycle, which is at the heart of most liquefaction plants. Steady state equations describing the mass and energy flows are presented. The paper concludes by explaining the concept of a wind powered Linde- Hampson cryogenic cycle and assessing, with scoping calculations, the technological feasibility of producing cryogens with an intermittent source of (renewable) energy.

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. THE object in prospecting is to find ore. With the exception of certain discoveries of more or less accidental nature, intelligent prospecting as conducted today is, whether consciously or not, based upon a process of elimination. In the following discuss on it is proposed to evaluate those factors that enter into the eliminating of certain tracts of ground and, conyersely, the concentrating of attention upon others. The danger of generalizations as to the barrenness of cer.ain areas, without having due regard for all such factors, is emphasized. The fact that our conception as to what areas or rock formations are to be regarded as favourable or unfavourable is, in some measure at least, changing with new discoveries under diverse and unexpected circumstances, adds more point to the discussion. The criticism might be raised that the subject is treated largely from the standpoint of geology, but that may be met by stating that it is, and must continue to remain, precisely from this standpoint that the prospecror directs his activities. Briefly, the geologist may render the greatest service to the prospector in the early steps of selecting (a) the general territory in which to prospect; (b) the area to be intensively prospected; and, finally, (c) those parts of the claim or claims to be prospected in detail. Although certain phases of the discussion will be, in some measure, of general application, we shall here concern ourselves essentially with prospecting in the pre-Cambrian shield. Furthermore, the subject is so large that it has been decided to limit it to a consideration of that portion of the pre-Cambrian rocks in which is situated the mining district of western Quebec, of which the writer can speak with more personal knowledge. This limitation need not, however, seriously detract from whatever merit the discussion may possess, since the deposits concerned cover a fairly wide range of metallic ores, including gold, copper with associated zinc, and, lastly, molybdenum.

In order to obtain values of angle of shearing resistance and initial resistance for McMurray oil sand for use in general design calculations, the shear strength of this oil sand was measured in a controlled strain type tester, modified so that the rate of deformation could be varied between 0.01725 and 0.1869 inches per minute. Effect of temperature was investigated by adapting the equipment to operate at both 71 ° and 185 °F. The data are reported in terms of angle of shearing resistance and initial resistance for varying rates of deformation, composition and temperature. While the main sets of results reported here were obtained at a bulk density range of 108.7- 109.5 lb. / cu. ft., some results were obtained at a bulk density range of 101-102 lb. / cu. ft. Analysis of varance tables have been drawn up from the results obtained from least squares correlations and significance tests applied. It was concluded that oil content and temperature were significant variables for the degree of shear strength developed by the oil sand; increase of oil content and decrease of temperature each cause an increase in shear strength. The bulk density range 108.7 to 109.5 lb./cu. ft. gave angles of shearing resistance from 30° to 40° and initial resistance values of 0.37 p.s.i. to 0.85 p.s.i. For the bulk density range 101 to 102 lb. / cu. ft., lower values of shear strength were obtained, indicating that compaction density was also of importance

"The interest in the use of sensor-based particle ore sorting has increased significantly with the recent advances in the sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. This technology has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically, the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore-sorting and associated reductions in the consumption of energy, water and consumables. However, layout has a significant impact on the installed cost of a concentrator and the layout impacts from fitting an ore-sorting circuit into the concentrator plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects. These include additional crushing and screening requirement, transportation of the rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements) and effects on concentrator footprints.INRODUCTION Ore sorting has been practiced throughout history with an early report by Agricola in 1556. Metallic and non-metallic minerals were extracted from rocks by laboriously breaking them with hammers and picks and hand-picking selected material with higher grade off a table. The concept has not changed but the sorting technology has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. Ore sorting is usually a dry process in which a portion of the material is rejected based on mineral properties and/or grade. The methods used for sensing ore particles cover a large range of physical properties. A variety of sensors are available that differ on the discrimination technique that is used, which include: photometry, radiometry, conductivity, magnetism, microwave, X-ray transparency: X-ray transparency and luminescence and UV fluorescence (Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1991; Wotruba, 2006). There are two main ore sorting techniques: particle ore sorting and bulk ore sorting. According to Nadolski et al (2018), the potential for sorting is determined though analysis of grade heterogeneity within the orebody (greater heterogeneity represents more opportunity to add value to a project) at the scale of the intended sorting unit size."

Different Au/MgO catalysts modified with Mn, and Fe were prepared by precipitation-deposition. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) and CO chemisorption and were tested in CO oxidation in the temperature range of 243-523 K. The catalytic tests using both Temperature Programmed Oxidation (TPO) technique and time on stream (TOS) experiments revealed the high activity of catalysts prepared. In TPO experiments the modification by Mn significantly increased the activity above 300 K, however in the subambient temperature range the activity decreased considerably. Catalysts modified by iron did not show any decrease in the activity below 300 K, while the activity at high temperature increased significantly. Catalysts modified by Mn, Fe showed higher activity, selectivity and stability in preferential CO oxidation, carried out in the presence of hydrogen than the unmodified Au/MgO catalysts. Results of in situ FTIR spectroscopy on both the base Au/MgO and the iron modified catalyst unambiguously revealed the formation of ionic gold in the presence of CO/O2 mixture. The formation of this species was strongly hindered in catalyst modified by manganese. Results obtained strongly support the need for the formation of "metal ion - metal nanocluster" ensemble sites. These sites are involved in the activation of the CO molecule prior to its reaction with atomic oxygen. It is suggested that at subambient temperature these ensemble sites contain mainly ionic forms of gold, while at higher temperature iron or manganese ions are involved in CO activation.

Compañía Minera Antamina is a polymetallic mining complex that produces copper and zinc concentrates as primary products and molybdenum and lead/bismuth/silver concentrates as by-products. In 2007, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) was contracted to increase SAG mill throughput by integrating and optimising blast fragmentation, crushing and grinding for the harder M4/M4A (CuZn) ores. Following the implementation of recommendations provided by Metso PTI, the SAG mill throughput increased from 2750tph to reach an average of 3600tph for the remainder of 2007. Due to continued application of mine to mill integration and optimisation philosophy, by 2010, the concentrator consistently exceeded the target of 4400tph while processing harder CuZn ores.

Roasting processes are divided into several elementary mechanisms, any of which could be significant or pre-dominant in a particular roast. The elementary processes considered in-elude beat transfer, gas-solid inter-actions with accompanying mass transfer between the bed and furnace atmosphere, vapor phase transport processes in solid-solid interactions, and solid phase diffusion processes. Examples are chosen of processes in which one of these mechanisms pre-dominates and some recently obtained data is presented to support the existence and significance of these mechanisms. "Indirect recovery and use of waste heat contained in smelter off-gas is proposed to expand regions available for year-round, on-site production of micro-algae–sourced biodiesel, a fuel that could be used in underground machinery. A dynamic model of an off-gas heat exchanger describes capture and distribution of heat into open, external, rectangular micro-algae ponds. Smelter off-gas contains sufficient energy to maintain large-scale micro-algae cultivation pond temperatures above 15°C, even with winter ambient temperatures below –15°C. Results highlight opportunities that could lie in tapping these heat resources to produce renewable biofuels on-site and sequester CO2 while leaving the industrial process unaffected.RÉSUMÉ On propose la récupération et l’utilisation indirectes de la chaleur résiduelle contenue dans les dégagements gazeux des fonderies pour développer les régions se prêtant à une production toute l’année durant et sur place de biodiesel à partir de micro-algues, carburant dont on pourrait se servir pour le matériel d’exploitation souterraine. Un modèle dynamique d’échangeur de chaleur contenue dans les dégagements gazeux décrit le captage et la distribution de la chaleur dans des bassins rectangulaires ouverts de micro-algues en extérieur. Les dégagements gazeux des fonderies contiennent suffisamment d’énergie pour maintenir les températures des grands bassins de culture de micro-algues au-delà de 15°C, même avec des températures ambiantes en hiver inférieures à –15°C. This biomass can be up to 50% oils (lipids), which can be extracted and converted into biodiesel through transesterification (Demirbas, 2008). Compared to terrestrial plants that produce similar oils (e.g., jatropha, soybean, and rapeseed), micro-algae represent an order of magnitude increase in areal productivity, do not require arable land, and can be continuously harvested (Rawat, Ranjith Kumar, Mutanda, & Bux, 2013). The potential advantages through the production of biodiesel from micro-algae also include sequestration of carbon dioxide, reduced reliance on fossil fuels, and the co-production of other value-added bioproducts."

"Does Canada need a mining industry? Isn't it a chronically depressed collection of businesses that pollute the air and water and tear up the countryside? Wouldn't it be better if Canada's investors devoted their attention to high-technology endeavours, tourism, and other relatively pleasant tasks?Probably the answer to whether Canada needs a mining industry in the 21st century is to look at the real mining industry that is in operation today. The facts indicate that mining is a very important contributor to Canada. It has certainly encountered some challenging times during periods of recession, and it face s severe and continuing problems of cost and competition in world markets. However, uneconomic mines have been closed, others suspended, and productivity has risen dramatically with employment at 77 000, down from 101 000 in 1981. The country's metal and non-metal mines, metallurgical plants and semi-fabricated metals industries employed an estimated 378000 workers in 1986, and paid wages than any other sector of the Canadian economy. This effort resulted in the production of 60 different metals, non-metals and structural minerals valued at $13.5 billion.The trade aspects of the mining industry are of paramount importance. If there is a reason for this situation to change during the next century. it eludes the authors. Canada has the well-developed expertise to discover, evaluate, develop, operate and profit from existing and new businesses based in an enormous area endowed with a nearly unbelievable variety of mineral resources. Many countries throughout the world must rely on producers like Canada, if they are to maintain and/or improve their standard of living."

In the past years the enormous weight saving potential of magnesium sheet has been demonstrated by various research projects all over the world. It has been shown magnesium flat products can benefit automotive, aviation, machine tool and consumer electronics industries. Major material problems such as poor formability, corrosion resistance and high production cost still inhibit the application of magnesium sheets in large scale production. The present contribution outlines achievements in casting and rolling technology. The authors developed an adapted strip casting process in which near-net-shape rolling feedstock of several wrought alloys has been produced. During the rolling process, various parameters were varied in order to modify the microstructure and surface quality of sheet. Several temperature cycles, strains, lubricants, roll surface structures and roll coatings have been analyzed. The sheets were examined and tested in deep-drawing experiments. Suitable rolling schedules have been developed for standard and modified wrought alloys. The study concludes with an overview of current industrial solutions and an estimation of the potential cost savings that might result from the adaptation of the process that has been developed.

For improvement in the productivity of tall building projects, table formwork is one of the main methods that have been adopted for slab formwork. Because the table formwork method is an equipment-oriented construction method, the type of lifting equipment and method of operation considerably affects the productivity and cost of the table formwork. It is also important to make an equipment input plan for completing the table formwork within the time given, according to the structural construction cycle. For performing the table formwork, a tower crane or an independent lifting system, and shifting trolleys, are required. However, if an inefficient equipment input plan is made, exorbitant cost may be incurred. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the productivity of a table formwork, considering the type and number of lifting equipment and the number of trolleys inputted, and to suggest quantitative data for making a cost-efficient equipment input plan within the construction duration given. It is expected that the results of this research will be utilized as a basis for cost-efficient equipment input planning.
