An area of about 7,000 square miles within the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province is underlain chiefly by granitic gneisses. There are, however, some exposures of mafic rocks which warrant further investigation, and some attractive structures, particularly basins, which deserve additional economic consideration. T HIS paper describes in a very general fashion the economic and geological features of an area of about 7,000 square miles on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province (Figure 1). The scarcity of published geological data on this part of the Cana-dian Shield (DePuyjalon, 1899 and Longley, 1944) justifies the presentation of these tentative results. It should be appreciated, however, that the information which follows was acquired in a rapid reconnaissance designed specifically to out-line what might be interpreted as favourable geological environments for the occurrence of economic minerals, rather than to produce an authoritative analysis of the geological history of the region.

Abstract A brief history of the electric arc furnace process of steel-making is given. The greater relative importance of this method of steel manufacture to the Canadian steel industry, as compared with its importance in the steel industry of the United States, is shown. The scope of the process is outlined and brief mention is made of the difficulty of obtaining melting stock low in alloy content. The physical chemistry of steel-making is discussed at length in simple terms, with emphasis on oxidation, de-oxidation, and the role of hydrogen. Carbide-type and silicon-type slags are described and the particular usefulness of each is outlined. The importance of various factors in the melting practice is evaluated on the basis of practical experience. Introduction Although electric furnace steels constitute only a small portion of the total weight of steel used in industrial operations, their importance is relatively much greater than is indicated by comparative tonnage figures. Tool steels, which are vital to all industry, are made almost exclusively by the basic electric arc furnace process, as are stainless steels, valve steels, and the higher alloy types of the class usually referred to as "alloy steels'. For many applications where steel other than electric furnace quality is often used, and when first cost is secondary to performance in service, the extra steel cost of electric furnace quality material is usually returned with interest by consistently longer service life. The electric furnace is pre-eminent in the quality alloy steel field because of the control that may be exercised over conditions of oxidation, de-oxidation, and temperature, the fundamental operations in steel making.

MR. J. J. McIntyre (International Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., and McGi1livray Creek Coal & Coke Company, Ltd., Coleman, Alta): Mr. Burrough's excellent paper, Metallurgical Coals of the Crowsnest Area, seems especially timely now, when the need for developing iron industries in the west, as well as in the east, is receiving so much attention. His -thorough review of the 'coking' industry is an especially valuable contribution, along with which the following brief remarks on coking in the Crowsnest Pass area of British Columbia and Alberta may be in order. When the Crowsnest Pass line of the Canadian Pacific railway was built there were great expectations for the non-ferrous metal industry; quite a number of smelter's were al-ready in operation in British Columbia and the northwestern United States, and further expansion was confidently expected. The suitability of the medium-volatile coking coals of the Pass for making metallurgical coke had been recognized from the time the fields were first explored. By the time the mines were fairly well developed there was already a market to war-rant the building of coking plants, and a common belief that expansion of the market would require a large coking industry. The first coke production was from plants built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, Ltd., at Fernie, B.C. in 1903, and the International Coal and Coke Company, Ltd., at Coleman, Alberta. These plants were followed by others built by the Crowsnest Pass Coal Company, at Michel, B.C., by West Canadian Collieries, Ltd., at Lille, Alberta, and by Leitch Collieries, Ltd., at Passburg Alberta, and by a plant at Hosmer, B.C.

"ALTHOUGH I SHOULD FIRST REVIEW the state of the mining art as it is today, because of the shortness of time I will confine myself to a re-view of the more important advances in that art which have been made in the past two to three decades. Then, a look at the opportunities and the challenges which now present themselves will be more meaningfulFirst, some of the more impor-tant developments in underground mining:(1) The recognition that good ventilation, visibility and working conditions are essential preliminaries to efficient production has resulted in their incorporation as a matter of practice in modern mine planning. (2) The introduction of the car-bide bit and the re-introduction of the airleg drill, and the resulting sharp rise in productivity, were early postwar developments. (3) The recovery of the coarser fraction of mill tailings for use as mine backfill also is an important cost-reducing development of recent years -and this has led to cemented backfill, which, al-though more expensive, meets certain specific needs and has tremendous potential. (4) Great strides have been made in improving explosives' materials and explosives' accessories. Millisecond-delay electric blasting caps, which improve fragmentation and reduce the seismic effect of blasting, and the development and •application for underground use of explosives are but two among many such improvements. (5) Trackless mining methods, using quarry-type equipment in some instances and specially de-signed low-headroom trucks, loaders and carrier-mounted drills in others have been successfully applied. (6) Dual-purpose load-haul units are now in use loading and hauling from open stope drawpoints, and smaller versions of this type of unit are in use in cut-and-fill and other types of stopes."

In 1955, the results of a regional, geological interpretation of the northern portion of New Brunswick were used as a basis for selecting, for intensive exploration, three areas in which structural and stratigraphic conditions were believed to be favourable. Airborne electromagnetic work, in one of these areas, provided the justification for acquiring the Murray group. Even though the initial results were discouraging, this geological interpretation, combined with the fortuitous discovery of cop• per-bearing float, was sufficient reason for carrying out further work using geochemical methods. This work finally resulted in the discovery of the Murray massive-sulphide deposit, after about eighteen months of coordinated exploration on the property. While this deposit is a typical New Brunswick-type base-metal occurrence, extensive leaching has produced a fossil gossan that rendered it an elusive target for exploration techniques of limited penetration Full credit for localizing the target area is given to the geochemical techniques, but geophysical surveys were needed to provide the necessary

"The natural stage of deep mines operation is a closure of unnecessary shafts. It is extremely important to ensure a proper shaft closure to avoid stability loss and the associated damage to surface facilities in the future. For the still active shafts, it can be done by a dedicated shaft closure design, but even then, depending on the shaft closure method, it may be necessary to perform regular shaft inspections. The paper presents a short overview of shaft closure methods and available tools and devices developed in the last time for such shaft inspections. INTRODUCTION The natural stage of deep mines operation, commonly occurring after depletion of the reserves of mined materials, is a closure of unnecessary shafts. All over the world, the number of liquidated shafts grows continuously and the problem of shafts disposal is especially critical for deep shafts. The typical depth of 600 m of currently liquidated shafts in Poland may already be seen as a challenging task. The greater is the challenge of shaft closure in Germany where the last active coal mines for shafts with a depth of up to 1,300 m have been recently closed. It is therefore extremely important to ensure a proper shaft closure to avoid stability loss and the associated damage to surface facilities in the future. For the still active shafts, it can be done by a dedicated shaft closure design, but even then, depending on the shaft closure method, it may be necessary to perform regular shaft inspections. In many cases, it is more important to inspect old, abandoned shafts, where the wall stability or even liner type are not fully known. SHAFT CLOSURE METHODS Abandoning a shaft is a complicated task, as shafts, being the link between the surface and an underground network of workings, disturb hydrogeological and gaseous conditions in the rock mass (Sztelak, 1991). Closure procedures at older mine sites have been carried out in accordance with earlier legislative requirements. For very old shafts (+100 years), it means in many cases only a sealing of the shaft entrances by means of timber or concrete slabs. In the 20th century, the shafts were also closed by means of filling with grainy materials, but even then the retrospective activities at abandoned mine sites were extremely limited and in most cases no further monitoring measures were performed. The possible consequence of an improper shaft closure and lack of monitoring is presented in Figure 1."

"Damaging seismicity associated with deep faulting in both mining and civil excavations not infrequently occurs without warning, and often before proper mitigation measures have been put into place. Severe squeezing is also a common problem for excavating through deep major faults. While both problematic conditions are difficult to predict and characterize, there is often a need at pre-feasibility and feasibility level to more reliably estimate the possible level of risk posed by such geologic structures. This paper introduces some structural geologic techniques that have potential application for both mining and civil applications for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of problem.INTRODUCTIONEncountering adverse faulting at depth in deep excavations, whether for mining or civil purposes can create serious economic and safety impacts. For deep mines or for deep tunnel projects, measures are available for aiding prediction of the extent of possible influence that large scale faults could create, but these techniques are rarely if ever applied as part of routine site investigation programs, or even as part of risk assessment evaluations. Several well established structural geologic methods of palao-history reconstruction have potential application for aiding forewarning of the extent of these types of potential problem by allowing estimates to be made of:• controlling stress orientations that might engender reactivation movement;• principal stress magnitudes that could lead to failure initiation, and• probable mechanisms of fault deformation - brittle (bursting) or plastic (squeezing).This paper explores several structural geological and rockmass characterization techniques that have application for unravelling fault structure of importance to deep engineering projects. Their application for mining or tunnelling purposes is advocated in conjunction with conventional rockmass characterization assessment approaches using GSI, RMR and/or Q to aid early recognition and definition of potential adverse ground condition behaviour associated with intersection of significant faulting at depth."

"The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985 (Borbely, Devuyst, Ettel, Mosoiu & Schitka, 1985). Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. Though it is possible to supply sulphur dioxide (SO2) in either gas or liquid form, the majority of these SO2/air operations use sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent reducing agent. This is probably due to the lower capital cost, safety concerns with, and availability of liquid SO2. Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, and its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. The increased capital expenditures (CAPEX) for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant could have a pay-back of less than two years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas inventory. Furthermore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and Boleo).This paper discusses the different processes which require SO2 as a reducing agent and compares the capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2.The heart of the SO2 gas plant is the sulphur furnace. The most economical way to produce SO2 is by combustion of sulphur in air producing up to 19.5 vol% SO2. Examples of large and small sulphur furnaces are discussed in terms of design, operation, and impacts on operational costs.The SO2 gas produced in a sulphur-burning plant has to be contacted with the liquor to be reduced. The choice of gas-liquid contacting device is important, and two contacting devices are discussed: 1) Gas sparging into the bottom of leach tanks (high, nearly constant, back pressure due to liquid head) and 2) absorption columns (low gas-side pressure drop)."

De nos jours, Jes restrictions en matière de protection de l'environnement obligent Jes opérateurs miniers a trouver Jes solutions Jes plus efficaces pour préserver Jes sites environnants de la pollution due a l'oxydation des sulfures. Cette oxydation cause une acidification accrue du milieu et une mise en solution des metaux toxiques. L'utilisation des recouvrements multicouches est l'une des solutions Jes plus efficaces pour limiter la pollution liée au DMA mais entraine des coilts de construction qui sont souvent considérés par l'industrie miniere comme prohibitifs. Une façon de rendre cette technologie applicable, d'un point de vue économique, est de désulfurer Jes résidus à l'usine de traitement et d'utiliser la fraction inerte comme composante d'un recouvrernent multicouche. Cette opération de desulfuration peut etre réalisée par flottation non sélective des résidus dans le but d'obtenir d'une part un faible volume de concentré de sulfures qui devra être géré convenablement et d'autre part un rejet non générateur d'acide.

"THIS DEPARTMENT is unique in that it operates in the production stream and also provides an essential service. Its operating function consists of scheduling an ore train to haul 10,000 tons per day over 17.1 miles of track and switching all incoming and outgoing rail equipment on 2.2 miles of track at the minesite and 6.2 miles of track at the metallurgical site. The service it provides is traffic control of all incoming commodities and all outgoing concentrates, metals and acid by rail and truck, even extending to port and ship control for overseas shipments (Fig. 46). "The requirements for a metallurgical acid plant treating smelter gases are both unique and demanding in terms of sulphur dioxide treatment and emission control. Since start up in 1981, the copper smelter at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited has undergone several major expansions. The expansion and modification of the acid plant has been an integral part of this process. Both production demands and government regulations dictate that this metallurgical acid plant be unique in terms of operating flexibility. The variable capacity to treat a wide range of sulphur dioxide concentrations, and the operating flexibility to control emissions are the topics of this paper.INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limitied is a base metal mining and metallurgical complex located in Timmins, Ontario. The discovery of the original copper-zinc-silver orebody was announced in April, 1964. Mining operations began in 1966 with a 9000 tonne per day concentrator coming on stream in November of that year. In April 1972, a 108 000 tonne per year zinc plant was commissioned. Over the years the facilities have been expanded, such that the concentrator now has the capacity to process 13 000 tonnes of ore per day . To expand zinc production, the world's second installation of the Cominco/Sherritt pressure leaching facility was completed in 1983 to bring total zinc production capacity to 125 000 tonnes per year. In 1973, serious planning for a smelter operation began. In early 1975, after studying both continuous smelting and flash smelting processes, a decision was made to proceed with the technology offered by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation of Japan. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process was to be used for the smelter and the Onahama No.3 tankhouse technology for the copper refinery.The smelter, which uses the Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process for the continuous production of blister copper from concentrate, went on line in June 1981. It has been expanded from its original capacity of 60 000 tonnes to 100 000 tonnes per year of copper.From the very early design stages for the metallurgical complex, the company had adopted a policy of constructing and operating modern plants which would meet existing and anticipated environmental standards. With this in mind, the decision was made to utilize the proven technology of fixing sulphur dioxide emissions, in the form of sulphuric acid. A 636 tonne per day single absorption contact acid plant was built to serve the zinc plant in 1972. In 1981, an 883 tonne per day double absorption contact plant was built to serve the needs of the copper smelter. The copper smelter acid plant has since been expanded to a design capacity of 1692 tonnes per day and it is the main focus of this paper."

This paper traces the development of the Seaboard Power Plant, which plays such an important role in the industrial life of Nova Scotia. It also shows the involvement of the plant in the siting of a heavy water production facility in Cape Breton. The paper concludes with an outline of the new installations which the Nova Scotia Power Commission has undertaken as an extension to the Seaboard Plant.

Due to the detrimental effect of platelet iron-rich intermetallics on mechanical properties (particularly ductility) in cast alloys, it has been essential to transform these phases into Chinese script morphology. In the present work, the effects of Mn and/or Si addition and cooling rate on the phase transformation of the iron-rich intermetallics in 206 cast alloys with different Fe contents ranging from 0.15 % to 0.5 % were systematically investigated. The results obtained showed that platelet ß-Fe and Al3(FeMn), Chinese script a-Fe, Alm(FeMn) and Al6(FeMn) can be observed in the 206 cast alloys, depending on the Fe, Mn and Si contents as well as the cooling rate. It was found that the addition of either Mn or Si favors the formation of Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics but inhibits the precipitation of the platelet phases. In addition, the combined addition of both Mn and Si has a synergistic effect on the phase transformation. Furthermore, there exists a critical cooling rate to effectively suppress the formation of platelet iron-rich intermetallics for a given alloy. The threshold cooling rate decreases with increasing Fe, Mn and Si contents. Casting process maps are established to correlate the intermetallics precipitated with alloy chemistry and cooling rate for 206 cast alloys containing various Fe levels.

"Metallurgical slag (MS) such as steel slag, copper slag is a renewable resource and its compressive strength exceeds 200MPa in general. Because pure metal slug can easily be mixed into MS, complex recycle system is necessary in order to realize MS’s recycling. Meanwhile, there is high equipment failure rate in conventional crushing system. New crushing systems with inertial cone crusher could solve this problem very well. Recovery rate of MS tailings requires that crushing product can’t contain too much oversize product, so the essential equipment include two crushers and one sieve in the traditional crushing system. The new crushing system which only includes two crushers can meet the requirement and simplify the crush process. Investment of crushing equipment and infrastructure can be cut down. Operating and maintenance costs can be obviously reduced due to the simple process, which also could achieve high energy saving and excellent economic efficiency.INTRODUCTIONMetallurgical Slag (MS) such as steel slag, copper slag is a typical industrial solid waste and it threatens our environment’s safe. Metallurgical enterprises must take action to settle these wastes in order to protect our environment. Because pure metal slug can easily be mixed into MS, its uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) will exceed 200Mpa. If crushing station employs traditional crushing equipment, equipment failure will be easily caused because of these pure metal slugs. Coarse crushing equipment usually adapts jaw crusher in traditional Crushing technology and rod mill will be utilized to finish the secondary and fine crushing works. And the same time screening machinery should be used to ensure the suitable particle size (Figure 1)."

"Solids concentration (weight % solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mud-line) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge's Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and a jarosite thickener in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 23 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by a sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles using a model due to Maxwell.The results from conductivity measurements were compared with direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line informnation could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners."

"Mechanical mixing equipment is common in a wide variety of mining, metals and process applications, such as hydrometallurgical reactors, solvent extraction, digestors, and tanks for storage of slurry or hydrocarbons. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been applied successfully to single-phase mechanical mixing problems for several decades and is established as a reliable design tool. As computational power and CFD codes have improved over the years, there have been significant advances in modelling capabilities including improved models of turbulence, interaction of rotating and stationary components, multiphase flows, and modelling of free surface interfaces, for example. This paper will provide an overview of the application of CFD to mechanical mixing problems. First, it will review the traditional single phase Multiple Reference Frame (MRF) approach and introduce a range of advanced modelling techniques. Three examples of the application of CFD to industrial mixing problems will be given. It will be demonstrated that CFD is an effective tool for reducing technical risk in design, for identifying the root-cause of mixing problems, and testing modifications to existing operations."

"The influence of annealing of galvanized steel (galvannealing) on its corrosion kinetics in a saturated solution of Ca (OH)2 has been studied by means of the polarization resistance method.Galvannealing heat treatment was carried out at 450°C and 550°C for varying times. Annealing at 450°C for 24 hr or at 550°C for 5 hr showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr) ~= - 400 m V/ SCE as well as, the lowest corrosion current density (icorr ~= 3 mA.cm-2, while Ecorr and icorr of the unheated specimens were ~= - 1400m V/SCE and == 20 mA.cm-2, respectively.Polarization curves were also obtained for the as-received galvanized specimens together with the galvannealed ones.INTRODUCTIONHeat treatment of galvanized steel (i.e . galvannealing) is carried out at a temperature range of 450°C to 550°C for a time sufficient to convert the free zinc coating to an alloyed one consisting of layers of iron-zinc intermetallic compounds. Table I is a review of the properties of the Fe-Zn intermetallicphases while Figure I is a reproduction - of the Fe-Zn equilibrium phase diagram taken from Hansen.Several authors have studied the formation of intermetallic phases through the interdiffusion of Zn/Fe couples. Their results confirmed the stability of intermetallic phases that could be shown up on the outer surface as a result of galvannealing of galvanized steel.Bernick and Sievertv"" investigated the processing of galvan nealed steel. They found that the galvannealed coating with the best forming qualities consisted of a mixture of Zeta phase and Eta phase."

NOx emissions at the Rio-Tinto Kennecott Copper (RTKC) smelter, near Salt Lake City, Utah, are regulated to a compliance emission limit at the Main Stack of 15.9 kg/hr on an annual rolling average. The paper discusses RTKC efforts and improvements, particularly related to the anode furnace operations, since the Smelter modernization in 1995 to comply with the air quality approval limit. This includes replacement of gaseous ammonia to Steam-Gas Refining (SGR) system during the copper reduction stage, upgrade anode furnace oxygen-fuel burner from Praxair’s Stabilized Jet (S-J) to Jet Lance (J-L) technology, development and implementation of operational best practices and continuing to investigate and evaluate NOx control technology and strategy in the industry. In early 2016, changes to Praxair J-L Burner technology on both anode furnaces, utilizing wider lance spacing, was adopted and further improved NOx emission levels well below the compliance limit. INTRODUCTION Since the establishment of the Clear Air Act in 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been regulating emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) to reduce impact on public health and the environment (USEPA, CAA, USEPA, NAAQS). As a requirement of the Clean Air Act, the EPA evaluates the standards for NOx and criteria pollutants on a periodic basis and as a result, standards have been revised and ultimately reduced over time (USEPA, CAA, USEPA, NAAQS, UDAQ, SIP). To remain competitive with changing regulations and in conjunction with Rio Tinto environmental standards for continuous improvement, the RTKC smelter has been motivated to research and implement NOx control strategies. NOx health and environment impacts NOx refers to a group of seven compounds including the most common, nitrogen dioxide (NO2). (USEPA, NO2). The EPA enforces both short-term (1-hr average) and long-term (annual average) standards for NO2 to protect against associated respiratory system impacts. Short-term exposure of elevated NO2 concentrations can aggravate respiratory diseases and lead to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing while longer exposures may contribute to the development of asthma and potentially increase susceptibility to respiratory infections. (USEPA, NO2) Additionally, NOx is necessary in the formation of ozone and particulate matter less than 2.5 microns (PM2.5). Ozone concentrations can negatively impact lung function and in some cases, contribute to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. (USEPA, Ozone) The particles associated with PM2.5 can reduce lung capacity and aggravate heart conditions. "While various methods are available to estimate a mining project's value, value is only established through a transaction. Comparable methods allow the value estimated for a mining project to be benchmarked against mining project values established in the market. Comparable methods thus are a key tool for ensuring value estimates are congruent with what the market would actually pay. For example, if the value estimated for a mining project using discounted cash flow analysis differs significantly from the value implied using comparable market methods, the valuator may be using metal price or discount rate assumptions that differ significantly from those the market is currently willing to pay for.The paper provides an overview of market comparable valuation approaches, and discusses some of the difficulties and limitations that arise in using these approaches. The types of market values that are typically utilised are discussed, including asset sale prices, share prices (market capitalisations), and values established in corporate mergers and acquisitions. Topics discussed include methods used in estimating a mining project's value based on the market value of the company that holds the asset, and limitations that arise because of unique features of mining projects and of companies that hold them.It is concluded that market comparable and fundamental (e.g. NPV) approaches to project valuation should not be viewed as alternative approaches to estimating project value, but rather can and should be integrated to derive a single value estimate based on both market andfandamental data. A method for integrating these approaches is discussed, and illustrated by example."
