"These studies address the relationship between mill media sizing and its grinding efficiency. Starting with the results from a review of the literature, the issues of initial media sizing for a new ball milling circuit, and then optimal media sizing for an existing milling operation, were studied. The Functional Performance parameters “Mill Grinding Efficiency” and cumulative “Mill Grinding Rates” from both plant and test-scale equipment were used, and provide valuable new insight into this topic. A plant media sizing diagnostic tool is presented, as are newly developed testing equipment and evaluation methods, and recent case studies.REVIEW OF MEDIA SIZING LITERATURE For a plant metallurgist to answer the question “How can I maximize plant profit by manipulating this grinding circuit variable?” she must know what effect the variable has on grinding circuit efficiency. Despite the significant cost of grinding media and its potential effect on production capacity, the ‘best’ media sizing remains ill-defined for any given ball mill circuit in the industry today. The underlying reasons for this will be discussed. But the importance of this issue drove Metcom and its industrial partners to take on the challenge of how to engineer the ball charge for an existing grinding circuit. In the absence of any proven method, the first step was a review of the literature. Sponsored by Cleveland-Cliffs, Inc., a broad review of the literature was undertaken, producing “The Effect of Media Sizing on Ball Milling Efficiency” (McIvor, 1997). Among hundreds of publications that were reviewed that discuss the topics of media sizing or wear, forty-five were studied in detail. These were grouped into: plant experiences; laboratory and pilot plant investigations; media wear studies; population balance modeling studies; and general papers on ball milling which included the topic of media sizing. The reader is encouraged to refer to that review. The findings remain unchanged, although some relevant papers have been written since (e.g. Staples et al, 1997; Banasi et al, 1999; Orford et al, 2006; LaMarsh, 2015). "Crush pillars are designed to be in a crushed state whilst being formed at the mining face. The residual stress state of these failed pillars provides a local support function in mining stopes and is used in the majority of the intermediate depth South African platinum mines. On mines utilising crush pillars, the pillar dimensions are selected to achieve a width to height ratio of approximately two. This is not achieved in most cases as a result of practical mining problems and poor pillar-cutting discipline. Furthermore, pillar dimensions are seldom adjusted to compensate for the various factors governing crush pillar behaviour. The pillars should, however, be in a crushed state whilst being formed or whilst still in close proximity to the mining face to prevent potential damaging seismicity.An underground investigation was conducted into the behaviour of the crush pillars in a trial site on the Merensky Reef at Lonmin Plc. The aim of this investigation was to examine the mechanism of pillar crushing and the related rock mass behaviour. The underground test results and pillar behaviour are compared to a limit equilibrium model to investigate if the model provides a useful approximation of the behaviour of the crush pillars. This paper details some of the preliminary findings.INTRODUCTIONOn most mining operations, the design of crush pillars is based on trial and error. As the pillar strength is unknown, the pillar sizes are adjusted to obtain the correct behaviour. Crush pillar dimensions are generally selected to give a width to height ratio (w:h) of approximately 2:1, (Ryder and Jager, 2002). Several factors affect the behaviour of the crush pillars and in many cases satisfactory pillar crushing is not achieved. This results in a seismic hazard in many of the mines using crush pillars. If pillar crushing is not initiated whilst the pillar is being formed at the mining face, as the mining face advances and the pillars move to the back area of a stope, some pillars may burst while oversized pillars may punch into the footwall. If pillars are designed in such a way that they are fractured during cutting by the face abutment stresses so that the pillars will already have yielded and reached their residual strength, further compression of the pillars will be associated with an increase in load and stability will be ensured, (Ozbay and Roberts, 1988). The stiffness of the strata must therefore be greater than the post-peak stiffness of the pillar (Figure 1) or violent pillar failure and hanging wall instability will occur. The pillar design should be aimed at determining pillar dimensions for which the post-peak curve of the pillar is as flat as possible."

The real option valuation method is often presented as an alternative to the conventional discounted cash flow (DCF) approach because it is able to recognize additional project value due to the presence of management flexibility. However, these two valuation methods can be separated on a more fundamental level by their differences in risk discounting. Real option valuation applies the risk-adjustment to the source of uncertainty in the cash flow while the DCF method adjusts for risk at the aggregate level of net cash flow. This seemingly small difference is the reason why the real option method is able to differentiate between projects according to each project?s unique risk characteristics while the conventional DCF approach cannot. This paper provides an overview of the real options and DCF valuation frameworks and discusses the differences in risk discounting that exist between the two methods. Using grade-school mathematics, this paper clearly demonstrates how, with real options, a unique project risk discount can be calculated which is directly linked to the project?s unique risk profile. It also highlights why the DCF method fails in this regard and shows why a call to ?increase the Risk-Adjusted Discount Rate? is an incomplete solution at best. Finally, a heap-leach project and satellite reserve development project are valued with both techniques and the difference in investment conclusions is explained in terms of the risk-discounting concepts discussed here.

Blasthole stoping methods were introduced at Birchtree Mine as an alternative to the original cut-and-fill and shrinkage stoping methods. The object was to take advantage of the ore structure and conditions, and achieve increased productivity. This paper outlines the design, operation and economics of three areas which utilized blasthole stoping. The 108areafrom 2300 level to 1500level was converted from cut-and-fill to sublevel blasthole stoping based on a block mining-and-filling sequence. The second area, the crown pillar of 110 mechanized cut-and-fill stope below 500 level, was recovered using horizontal rings drilled from raises within the ore zone. The third area, the 83 orebody from 1300 level to 1100 level, used the vertical crater retreat (VCR) method with large-diameter blastholes. Blasthole stoping has increased productivity and improved operating conditions.

"Before getting into more specific aspects of my talk today I should put in one disclaimer - one week in Mainland China and one day with Premier Kosygin does not make me an expert on Sino-Soviet affairs nor on Canadian-Chinese relations. Perhaps though there is a message in the fact that one meeting took place in relative openness in China and the other was at least partly in a bullet-proof limousine in Canada. I thought it might be interesting and appropriate to explain something of the forest industry to you who are engaged in the mining industry. Our industry, like yours, is based on a natural resource and the basic activity that we engage in is the extraction and conversion of that resource into saleable materials. However, the fundamental difference between our industries is that our resource is on top of the ground - easily visible and easily measurable, whereas yours is under the ground - difficult to find and, having been found, expensive to measure. A second difference is that ours is renewable while yours is extractive, and you must keep finding more to keep up reserves."

The swift decline of coal during the period of unprecedented expansion in the Canadian economy is a phenomenon deserving careful examination, because the underlying forces contributing to this decline may have broader implications in our national economy. At the present level of technology, coal is more difficult to process, transport and utilize than liquid and gaseous fuels. Fundamentally, it is a matter of limitation in technique. Because coal is a vast store-house of energy in Canada, the reduction of these limitations is in the long-term national interest.

THE Ontario Research Foundation has developed a process for producing low-density steel shapes by direct reduction of iron oxide powders. The process is a combination of reduction, sintering (without compaction), and carburizing, and has been described by Cavanagh (1). Iron oxide powder, in the form of mill scale or highly concentrated iron ore, carefully sized, is poured into a porous mould. A reducing agent, generally coke breeze, is placed around this mould in a heat resistant sagger which is sealed off and heated to 2,000°F. for a number of hours. The coke/ ore ratio, the particle size distribution, the temperature and time of soaking, and the size and shape of the reduced product, determine the densities and carbon contents attained. The Defence Research Board sponsored a programme of research into some of the mechanical properties of the material (which was named Controlled Density Steel) and this paper is an account of various factors which govern the tensile strength of the steel. The ?practically attainable range of density is from 1.5 to 5.5 gm./ cc. but higher densities are obtained on hot working. This paper, however, is restricted to discussion of results for moulded products.

"The subsea rock cavern project is an underground storage facility. For cost-effective and safe excavation, the risk caused by the groundwater seepage into the rock cavern must be addressed. As one of the essential steps of the assessment work, the hydraulic conductivities of the fractured rock masses should be reliably determined based on the limited measured data and geological information from the few boreholes. On the basis of site investigation data and monitored water flow and water pressure data during excavation, this paper presents an estimation method for hydraulic conductivities of the rock masses containing water bearing zones.INTRODUCTIONIn the development of underground rock caverns/tunnels, the uncertainty of hydro-geological conditions plays a critical role in terms of construction cost and construction safety. Excessive groundwater seepage has been identified as one of the key safety factors which always lead to vast loss, such as the Seikan Tunnel in Japan which encountered sudden water inflow and then catastrophic face collapsing, tunnel flood during excavation (Xu et al., 2013). As a key factor in the risk management associated with the groundwater leakage into rock cavern, the hydraulic conductivity determination is very important for cost estimation, reliable water control and construction management.The case presented in this paper is an underground project consisted of a cluster of rock caverns/tunnels for storage of hydrocarbon products. These caverns are located in heterogeneous sedimentary bedrock, at a depth of 130 m beneath a basin, and the crowns of caverns are located at about 100 m below the sea bottom. The caverns/tunnels are designed at two levels, the water curtain tunnels are at the upper level, and oil storage caverns are at the lower level, as shown in Figure 1. A number of horizontal and vertical water injection holes drilled from the upper water curtain gallery tunnel will establish continuous horizontal and vertical water curtains for providing a stable pressure distribution around the caverns, to keep oil/gas inside the lower storage caverns. As the hydrostatic pressure of groundwater around the storage caverns is higher than the pressure of stored oil and gas, the stored oil and gas will not leak out of the cavern (Lu, 2010; Xu et al., 2015). Groundwater pressure gauges are installed in the water curtain gallery tunnels, and water from the operational and access tunnels is injected continuously into the curtains to maintain the pressure. Some monitoring data are recorded at different construction stages. This paper proposes suitable methods to predict the hydraulic conductivity in rock mass and to determine the hydraulic conductivity in the water bearing zones."

"A new sensor based sorting system has been developed, providing a possibility for laboratory scale testing and further scale-up of the separation results to the industrial operation. The new system contains different sensors as: X-ray detectors, visible light cameras, NIR cameras, ultraviolet cameras and magnetic sensors, in the same sorting unit. The sorting unit allows advanced calibration options and fine-tuning of the installed sensors to achieve the best separation effect under controlled conditions. Finally, the processed material can be analysed and separated by the rejection mechanism, similarly to the industrial scale operation. At the same time, the process is carried out with limited amount of material allowing detailed statistical calculations for processed particles and all sensor types. The optimal settings and sensor types are specified for the industrial application.The paper describes the scale up of the results achieved for iron ore and coal, where the test work was first carried out using the new laboratory sorting system and where the industrial scale sorting system has been built, in the final stage. The industrial scale sorting results showed a very good correlation between the laboratory and full scale operation. Thanks to the detailed study carried out in the laboratory equipment, the settings of the sensors in the full scale operation provided much better separation efficiency. It was especially important to provide proper setting for the X-ray sensor data calculations, which can be very critical for achieving the best results. During the industrial scale sorting of coal, the input material had 40-55% rock particles as the direct source of ash in the coal stream. The optimal laboratory unit settings and transferring these settings to the industrial sorter, provided 98.8% efficiency for removing rock particles with only few % losses of coal."

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. The Nak?azdli First Nation and the municipality of Fort St. James are located in the Stuart Lake/Nak?al Bun area and are not unfamiliar to mining. These northern British Columbian communities have been associated with the historic Pinchi Lake Mercury mine and today are closely linked with British Columbia?s newest mine, the Mt. Milligan mine. Prior to the construction of Mt. Milligan, community health and social service providers were concerned about potential impacts that would occur from new mineral development activities. This concern has led to a partnership between the above communities and researchers with expertise in the area of mining and health. This paper describes: the current mining and health environment with a focus on British Columbia; mining trends in the Stuart Lake/Nak?al Bun area; the current community-based health research project funded by the Vancouver Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and; a suite of community-based health recommendations to mining companies on key issues to consider when developing projects near municipalities and Aboriginal communities in Canada, based upon one of the newest mines under development in Canada.

"The flotation performances and adsorption mechanisms of a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) to malachite, cassiterite and wolframite were investigated by micro-flotation tests and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The micro-flotation results indicated that compared with styrene phosphonic acid (SPA), diphosphonic acid (DPA), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), HPA exhibited excellent collecting power to the three oxide ores. In addition, HPA showed superior selectivity against hematite, tourmaline, feldspar and quartz. The results of XPS analysis demonstrated that HPA reacts with active species (M) on metal oxide by formation of P-O-M or P-M bonds.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, flotation has been the main process for separation and recovery of valuable minerals from complex ores (Mei, 2013; Zhou, 2014). One of the key requirements in flotation process is to increase selectively the surface hydrophobicity of the targeted minerals by surfactant (known as collector in flotation) adsorption so that these mineral particles can preferably attach air bubbles in a slurry or pulp (Bai, 2004; Hankins, 2004). To anchor a solid surface selectively, special functional group are designed to adjust the interaction between the surfactant and the active sites of solid surfaces (Wu, 2006; Huang, 2014).Organic phosphorous compounds have strong affinity toward metals or metal oxides because they form more stable metal complexes than metal carboxylates (Pazik, 2001; Zheng, 1998). In mineral engineering, phosphorous compounds have been exploited as metal extractants and flotation collectors (Alguacil, 2002; Sun, 2008). Ni (2012) and Zhang (1998) introduced diphosphonic acid (DPA) as an effective collector for flotation of fersmite and niobite. Liu (1999) found styryl phosphonic acid (SPA) was a superior collector for flotation recovery of finely disseminated rutile ores. Gruner and Bilsing (1992) thought SPA was one of the best collectors for flotation recovery of cassiterite which could obtain a high-grade concentrates of more than 40% with high recovery values. Bulatovic (1999) investigated the flotation performances of phosphoric acid ester (PAE) to perovskite, ilmenite and rutile and found that PAE was an impactful collector for selective flotation of titanium minerals from complex ores in the presence of petroleum sulfate. However, a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) as a flotation collector for recovery of titanium ores were hardly reported in the previous literatures."

An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between glass sphere and silica plate in CnTAC1 (n=12, 14, 16, 18) solutions. The results showed the presence of long-range attractive forces that can be fitted to single exponential functions. With a given surfactant, the attractive force increased with increasing concentration, and reached a maximum at the point of charge neutralization (p.c.n.). The decrease in the attractive force above the p.c.n. is probably due to the inverse orientation of the surfactant molecules. A plot of the log (p.c.n.) vs. the number of carbons in the hydrocarbon chains of the Cn TACI homologues showed a linear relationship with a slope of -0.37, indicating that the surfactant adsorption entails a decrease in free energy by -0.85 kT per mole of CH2 (or CH3) group. These results suggest that the adsorption of long-chain surfactants is controlled by hydrocarbon chain association during the process of forming surface hemi-micelles (or domains). Possible origins of the long-range attractions are discussed on the basis of the results presented in this communication.

The Gibraltar Mine and Mill facility were commissioned in 1972 by Gibraltar Mines Ltd utilizing a flowsheet consisting of two stages of crushing followed by a rod mill / ball mill grinding circuit. During operations a number of opportunities were evaluated to expand the mill capacity; however, the economics of the day did not allow any of these projects to proceed. The mine continued to operate until late 1998 when it was shutdown and put on care and maintenance due to low commodity prices. Taseko Mines acquired Gibraltar in 1999 and in 2004, with the improvement in the metal markets, made the decision to restart operations. During the restart planning a number of opportunities for mill improvements and upgrades were identified and, after operations were successfully restarted, the decision was made to once again review expansion opportunities for Gibraltar. Taseko evaluated various expansion alternatives eventually deciding to install a SAG Mill, convert the existing rod mills to ball mills and distribute the SAG discharge to the resultant six 6 parallel ball mills. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the SAG mill grinding circuit.

The Quebec Cartier Mining Company produces iron concentrate for twelve months of the year from Port Cartier. This J>Ort is designed to handle ship varying in size from 3,000 to 100,000 d.w.t., requiring 50 feet of water at low tide. The harbour was built on shore for reasons of economy and layout, after considering many more conventional offshore designs. It provides for heavy oil bunkering, tanker off-loading, a heavy lift derrick and freight handling, besides ship loading and mooring. The weather for the previous fifty years was studied to enable wind and wave conditions to be accurately assessed for design purposes, and to determine probable lost time due to adverse weather conditions through-out the year. The first ship to be loaded was 60,000 d.w.t.; the second, 20,000 d.w.t. The latter entered the harbour after dark, under its own power, following a tug through the partly dredged narrow entrance. Large ships use tug assistance. Ships may leave the loading berth with the other berths occupied.

"The material presented in this paper will be subject to modification as new data become available, but it is presented in the hope that it will inspire more intensive mineral exploration and geologic studies of what appears to be one of Canada's richest mineral provinces. A metallogenic province 400 by 150 miles in extent, lying mostly northeast of Tintina trench, encompasses most of the base metal deposits of Yukon, as well as deposits of other metals. Its main features are northwesterly trending arcuate fold belts, with several orogenic axes, which include most of the metamorphosed rocks, granitic intrusives and mineralization; and which are modified by regional uplifts, northwest-striking fault trenches, and lesser transverse folding and faulting.The main base metal occurrences and their regional controls are summarized briefly. Most of the replacement-type deposits are localized in late Proterozoic to early Paleozoic rocks, particularly Lower Cambrian -probably because these are the most physically and chemically favourable hosts encountered in an appropriate temperature and pressure environment; perhaps because of early age of deposition. Most of the deposits also occur near heat sources or intrusives with associated structural uplift, which has, moreover, served to expose the older rocks. They also tend to occur near known or suspected regional fault trenches, such as Tintina, Macmillan and Hess, although this relationship may be fortuitous. In detail, they may be localized in fold axes, flat-lying beds or other appropriate structural traps. Vein-type deposits are fracture-controlled and localized by dilational localfties, the competence of wall rocks and ""damming"" effects.In the Anvil district, large stratiform iron-zinc-lead replacement deposits lie parallel to gently plunging flex-ures in phyllite in a zone parallel to the Tintina trench, along the southwest flank of the arch-like Anvil batholith. About 80 million tons of massive sulphide ore probably existed before erosion of the Faro orebody, the Vangorda deposit could have been of similar magnitude before erosion and much more tonnage probably remains to be discovered in the district. The Anvil deposits may differ from others found to date in Yukon, but resemble the Sullivan orebody of southeastern British Columbia in their large size, localization in essentially non-limy peptic to arena-ceous host rocks of Proterozoic or early Paleozoic age and proximity to the Rocky Mountain -Tintina trench sys-tem. These features suggest an origin from primordial subcrustal sources.More major ore deposits, not only of lead, zinc and copper but probably of other metals as well, will no doubt be found in similar environments in Yukon or Alaska. Thus, the base metal province of Yukon offers challenging opportunities for prospecting, development, field studies and basic research."

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. THERE have been great changes in the design, capacity, and pressure of steam generating units over the past fifty years. If we go back as far as 1890, the plants then existing were largely horizontal return tubular boilers, hand-fired, with the boilers supported on the brick sitting which was com-posed of red brick with, probably, a refractory lining one brick thick in the combustion chamber. About this time, the water tube boiler began to supplant the H.R.T. boiler and, where new plants were being constructed of any size, water tube boilers were largely installed. In those days, say from 1890 to 1905, a 250 h. p. water tube boiler was considered a large unit. These boilers were largely the straight tube type and were set with the first row of boiler tubes three to six feet above the grates. The brick setting was a combination of red brick and fire-brick. The fire-brick lining in the furnace proper was usually 9 in. thick and in the first pass 4 1/2 in., while the rest of the setting was entirely red brick. These units were largely hand-fired and were expected to produce about 100 per cent rating as a maximum. It may be well at this point to define rating, which is the evaporation of one boiler horse power per hour by each ten square feet of heating surface in the boiler. A boiler horse power is the evaporation of 34.5 pounds of steam from and at 212°F. Consequently, a boiler containing 2,000 square feet of heating surface is rated at 200 h. p. and the evaporation at 100 per cent rating is 200 X 34.5, which equals 6,900 pounds of steam per hour from and at 212°F.

The portion of the earth's surface covered by peatlands has been conservatively estimated at over 420 million ha (Kivinen and Pakarinen 1980). It is estimated that there are about 170 million ha of peatland in Canada. New Brunswick contains about 140,000 ha. Harvesting of peat for horticultural purposes has been carried out in New Brunsiwck since 1942. This industry, and the potential for using peat for energy purposes, indicated the need for an accurate assessment of the resource. In 1975, therefore, the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources began a detailed peatland inventory. Assistance from the Canada Department of Regional Economic Expansion permitted acceleration of this program and field work was completed in 1982. Information gathered by the program will form the basis for a management plan for future use of the resource.
