"The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33 ½ millions of gallons of fresh water and reuses more than 100 millions of gallons of water daily. The continuing search for suitable recycle methodology has enabled the Company to put one 25,000 TPD mill on line utilizing recycled water entirely and a second 35,000 TPD mill is under construction which will likewise employ the concept of recycled water. Future milling plans are aimed at the replacement of all fresh water with recycled water, including sewage effluent and mine waste water.WATER REUSE AT INCO’s SUDBURY MILLSAs man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive -- W A T E R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the United States was over 300 billion GPD (l) or more than 1,700 GPD per person(5) The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the United States by the year 2000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). "New tax rules that can apply to the repayment, extinguishment, or other settlement of a company's debt are finally taking shape. These new rules are far-reaching in their application, and can affect mining companies in a serious, negative way.IntroductionIn his February 1994 budget, Finance Minister Paul Martin announced changes to the Income Tax Act that could have an adverse impact on a company that restructures its debt. Since then, the new rules have undergone considerable transformation during their fetal stage: draft legislation was introduced in July 1994; revised draft legislation was introduced December 1994; and a third version of draft legislation was introduced February 1995. It seems that the new rules have now been pretty well finalized, and they contain some serious traps that the unwary could fall into. The new rules are of particular importance to mining companies, because a mining company's resource pools will be caught under the new rules, whereas these pools escaped the wrath of the old rules. The following commentary summarizes the new rules that are generally referred to as the ""debt forgiveness"" rules."

Abstract - The Na-feldspar orebodies in Sardinia occur along structures belonging to a regional ENE-WSW system that developed during the late stages of the Hercynian orogeny, and that was reactived during the Alpine orogeny. The main petrographic facies include granitoids, albitized granitoids, albitites (more or less rich in quartz), and albitites containing Mg minerals. Field observations and petrological and geochemical data point toward a metasomatic origin for the albitite orebodies. Albitization involved depletion of K from K-feldspar and biotite, dissolution of free quartz, and a lowering of Sr/Na2O and CaO/Na2O ratios in the protolith, under conditions of a positive thermal gradient. The absence of later K-metasomatism implies that, during a subsequent decline in temper- ature, the composition of the albitizing fluids was modified by an influx of meteoric or other waters.

Industrial minerals are generally considered to include non-metallic minerals, mineral products, or materials that provide raw material inputs for the construction, chemical, and manufacturing industries. They are often relatively low-value and bulky materials that are generally used close to where they are produced; however, some raw materials may be transported hundreds of kilometres to manufacturers and customers (ENDM, 2021). They do not include the metallic minerals, mineral fuels, or gemstones, and are used in industries based on their physical and/or chemical properties (Wikipedia, 2021). In contrast to most metallic minerals, a general distinguishing characteristic of the industrial minerals sector is their general low degree of market elasticity in relation to the market prices and product specifications. The estimation of either a Mineral Resource or a Mineral Reserve (MRMR) for an industrial minerals deposit can be affected to a significant degree by a number of factors that are not typically applicable to metallic mineral deposits. These factors can include such considerations as the particular physical and chemical characteristics of the final product, product quality issues, market size and market access. In some cases, such information may be confidential and proprietary. One of the key challenges of the industrial minerals sector is to define a commonly accepted listing of which types of minerals, materials, or mineral deposits can be considered as industrial minerals (Mining Standards Task Force, 1999). Although definitions for what constitutes an industrial mineral can vary in detail, general descriptions can be found in American Geosciences Institute (2021), Fastmarkets IM (2021), Snowden (2019), SME (2021) and Wikipedia (2021). A brief listing of some of the materials and minerals that are generally considered to be industrial minerals is provided in Table 1. For the purposes of this document, all references to industrial minerals include not only the minerals, materials, and mineral deposits themselves, but also the various commercial products that are derived from these sources.

"IntroductionDURING the past quarter of a century diamond drilling, in all its phases, has increased in Canada to a very impressive total of more than 10,000,000 feet annually. Since the art of diamond drilling became recognized, some seventy-five years ago, there has been considerable improvement in both equipment and technique. The steam-powered drill rig and the hand-set diamond bit are things of the past.The purpose of this paper is to review some drilling trends •and practices over the past few years. In the preparation of the paper, the author wishes to acknowledge kind assistance of Mr. J. D. Cumming, Dr. C. H. Hitchcock, Mr. Robert H. Quintal, and many others, including staff members of the Longyear organization.Figures provided by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics for the year 1954 show that Canadian production of metallic and non-metallic minerals and structural materials had a value of $1,454.2 million, excluding radioactive products for which figures are not available. Approximately 61 per cent of this valuation comprised production of nickel, copper, gold, coal, asbestos, zinc, lead, and iron. It is certain that diamond drilling played a major role in the discovery and development of the orebodies from which these minerals were obtained.After the surface examination of an ore deposit, diamond drilling will automatically follow, in order to determine structure, grade, and tonnage.Footage drilled by mining companies and contractors on mineral exploration and blast-hole work since 1945, as reported by the Do-minion Bureau of Statistics, is shown in Figure 1."

"The supply of copper is expected to be at a large deficit in 2012. To recover from these deficits mining companies are required to maximize production and there is no better way to accomplish this than to optimize the use of their mobile mining equipment fleets. To optimize these fleets, each equipment type has to be monitored in its own unique way. Automation would not only improve production, but also minimize the safety risks and eliminate planning errors. The automated vibration monitoring of multiple systems on the shovel can determine the machine’s condition at all times. This reduces unplanned downtime and keeps critical shovels in production. This paper will discuss the details of how shovels can be successfully monitored, continuously. INTRODUCTIONP&H Mining, part of Joy Global, is the world’s largest manufacturer of above-ground mining equipment. Its electric rope shovels, such as Figure 1, with capacities up to 115 tons (104.3 metric tons), are used for high production loading in surface mines; its draglines, such as Figure 2, have bucket capacities to 160 cubic yards (122 cubic meters). P&H also produces blasthole drills, mobile mining crushers and other essential mining equipment. Headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, the company does business on every continent, except Antarctica. ECONOMIC FACTORSDue to the global demands for metals and power, mines are required to operate at full capacity. Mine operations cannot afford any critical assets to shutdown unexpectedly; depending on the ore type and quality, downtime for a single shovel can be as much as $300,000 per hour.Electric rope shovels are one of the most critical assets in open pit mining. They are very large, complex machines with DC or AC motors, multiple reduction gearboxes (some of them complex planetary) and multiple large rolling element bearings. This complexity, combined with the tough 24/7 service, results in too much unplanned shovel downtime, which can affect the entire downstream process."

"A model was developed to use near-infrared (NIR) analysis of pulverized ore samples to estimate the recoverable gold content for ores from the Barrick Cortez Hills underground mine. Current routing practices use a ratio of the cyanide soluble gold content and fire assayed gold (CN/FA) to classify ores as oxide or refractory. Prediction accuracy of the NIR model was equivalent to the CN/FA ratio. Prediction accuracy was improved by combining the CN/FA ratio and the NIR spectra. Bootstrap validation estimates the root-mean-square error to be 9.92% with an estimated r-squared value of 0.893. This model will allow more accurate estimates of the variability in recoverable gold content throughout this mine. These data will aid in building an improved geo-metallurgical model or in making better informed routing decisions during the production cycle.INTRODUCTION The contained gold of an ore available for cyanidation is often related to subtle variations in the mineralogy. It is difficult and expensive to collect enough mineralogical information in order to predict how the variable mineralogy will impact the metallurgical results and project economics throughout the life of the mine or mill. Near-infrared spectroscopy may be an effective tool to rapidly and inexpensively collect discrete, quantitative mineralogical data for minerals that contain transition metal oxides, metal sulfides with semi-conduction properties, rare earth metals, and some chemical groups having di-pole covalent bonds such as carbonates, sulfates, and various types of clays (Hunt, 1977). Near-infrared spectroscopy can be a powerful tool for geo-metallurgical characterization of deposits where the presence of these minerals has direct or indirect relationships to metallurgical results such as grindability, regent consumption, or recovery. Near infrared spectroscopy is a rapid analysis that measures the intensity of reflected light in the near-infrared spectrum. The ranges for the ASD-Panalytical units used in this study extend through the visible spectrum and into part of the UV spectrum, reporting reflection by wavelength from between 350 nm to 2500 nm. Absorption peaks visible in this range are a result of interactions with outer valence elections or chemical bonds. The location and intensity of the peaks vary depending on the chemical composition and crystal structure of a solid indicating the presence and abundance certain minerals (Hunt, 1977; Clark, 1984)."

The connection between mineralogy and metallurgical performance in a plant was recognised long ago (Gaudin, 1939; Petruk, 1976; Petruk and Hughson, 1977; Cabri, 1981; Petruk and Schnaar, 1981; Kinloch, 1982; Peyerl, 1983, Baum et al 1989 for example). The modern toolbox that we now routinely use for flowsheet development took decades to develop (Lotter et al., 2002; Baum and Lotter, 2004; Lotter, 2011 for example). Many workers contributed considerable time and effort to this overall mission of connecting sampling, mineralogy and mineral processing to integrate the flowsheet development activities. Certain key milestones marked this journey, such as Gy’s treatise on the sampling of particulate materials in 1979, which was later added to by François-Bongarçon, Pitard, Minnitt, and Holmes for example. The development of QEM*SEM by Gottlieb et al. of the MLA by Gu et al. constituted a huge leap forward in accuracy and mineral measurement capacity, as well as a reduction in standard errors of mineral characterisation. The advancement of the microprobe to an automated platform made a significant difference to detailed compositional mineralogy. This led to a strong position from which to draw meaningful processing implications from the mineralogical data. Reproducible flotation testing and reliable plant survey material for characterisation was dealt with by, amongst others, High Confidence Flotation Testing ( Lotter, 1995: Runge, 2010, and Bradshaw, 1997); and Statistical Benchmark Surveying (Lotter, 2005), with earlier prototypes which were steadily improved (Lotter, 1994; Restarick, 1976). The sterling work of Napier-Munn in engaging sound statistical methods with mineral processing led to the successful design and use of methods that could identify and quantify small recovery gains in plant scale trials. This history and present capability are reviewed, including leverage into asset management.

The CIM Definition Standards can be viewed at mrmr.cim.org. Despite the claims of energy efficiency and the considerable development that has gone into dramatically extending rolls? life and facilitating rolls? change-out, in the six years since the last SAG conference, only a few HPGR operations have entered the realm of mineral processing. Risk barriers to the take-up of new equipment or processes are: a massive increase in materials handling issues as well as in the number of pieces of equipment required, low total circuit potential energy savings, and similar or higher capital costs. An alternative route is to make use of the complementary strengths of the HPGR and SAG in hybrid circuits. Minimising materials handling issues, providing an ideal balanced feed to the AG or SAG mill, and improving controllability through shifting grinding load as the RoM feed changes, are all potential major advantages to this approach. Conceptual circuit layouts, based on real measured ore and equipment data, are presented here to illustrate the potential production upside, the reduction in operating costs and the reduction in the physical and energy footprints.

"This paper presents results of ongoing research being carried out at the University of New South Wales into improved methods for estimating rock mass strength. In this paper the rock mass strength of Hawkesbury Sandstone is assessed. An estimate is first made based on an extensive database of intact rock strength data being collated by the author and the assumption that the rock mass strength can be determined following the GSI approach. The resulting strength envelope is then compared with nine documented case studies where stress induced failure has occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone. The case studies cover a range of conditions:• construction dates from 1880s to 2006• spans from 3.2 to 12.5 m• depths from 17 to 124 m• excavation methods of drill & blast, roadheader and TBM.Finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of failure. The finite element models are interrogated to provide the values of major and minor principal stresses in and around the mapped failure zone. Failure and stable points are then compared to the rock mass strength envelope(s) of Hawkesbury Sandstone derived using the Hoek-Brown criterion and spalling criteria. The Hoek-Brown rock mass strength envelope differentiates between the ‘failed’ and ‘stable’ zones remarkably well.INTRODUCTIONStress induced failures of rock masses are fortunately rare in civil tunnelling. However, when they occur they provide an opportunity to calibrate an assumed rock mass strength criterion. This paper compares an estimate of rock mass strength for the Hawkesbury Sandstone with the following cases where stress induced failure occurred in tunnels excavated within Hawkesbury Sandstone.• Cataract & Devines Tunnels of the Upper Canal (Upper Nepean Scheme)• Malabar Outfall Tunnel• Sydney liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) Storage Cavern• Northside Storage Tunnel• Cross City Tunnel• Lane Cove TunnelTwo-dimensional finite element modelling is used to assess the likely magnitudes of the stresses present at the time of the failures. "A REVIEW OF MINERAL DISCOVERIES IN CANADA, and in particular the Canadian Shield, using the physical aspects of overburden reveals a trend in the art of exploration. At an early time of exploration (1847-1954), float and heavy clasts were used successfully to find ore deposits with little knowledge of Quaternary environments. At a later time (1955 to present) , use of Quaternary rock-units for sampling have made possible tracing indicator trains of float, heavy clasts and other ore-type clasts to the source bedrock. The basal till of retreat ice is now recognized as a1l favourable sampling environment and as such has been used to successfully discover hidden orebodies. The esker massive gravel is beginning to be recognized as a favourable environment and use of it has met with technical success. An understanding of those changes that have taken place during the transportation of the material and after its deposition is essential to proper sampling and treatment of the samples from the basal till and the esker massive gravel. Use of float and heavy clasts in search of orebodies is continuing in present-day exploration on the Shield. Lessons learned from it are being incorporated into exploration using favourable Quaternary rock-units for sampling. Hence, both subjects have a need for review and are discussed in this paper."

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. In hydrometallurgical minerals processing slurries are often processed at very small grind sizes and high solids concentrations. This normally results in flow anomalies of such slurries. Due to flow limits or yield stress the slurry tends to stagnate close to the vessel bottom, the walls and at any internals. The main mixing task therefore generally is not suspending of the solids but the homogeneous blending of the entire vessel volume. If not considered during the agitator design only a fraction of the vessel contents will be mixed. Therefore the knowledge of the slurry rheology as well as the variations in process parameters is vital to design e.g. storage or surge tanks. The integral mixing solution considers the motor power, the choice of the impeller type and number, the impeller diameter as well as the design of the baffles and feed and discharge positions.

"Advances in technology provide educators with valuable tools to enhance their teaching and efficiently deliver content to larger audiences. University educators are often encouraged to become more “research intensive” and to increase student enrollment. Faced with these pressures, there is a tendency to use technology to improve teaching efficiencies rather than to enhance existing teaching approaches. Practical learning in applied engineering courses would suffer greatly if hands-on experience is not emphasized. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of new technologies applied to learning, and methods to incorporate more hands-on experiential teaching techniques to applied mining engineering courses.RÉSUMÉ Les avancées technologiques fournissent aux éducateurs des outils intéressants pour rehausser leur enseignement et livrer efficacement de la matière à de grands auditoires. Les éducateurs universitaires sont souvent encouragés à devenir plus « axés sur la recherche » et d’augmenter l’inscription d’étudiants. Face à ces pressions, il y a une tendance à utiliser la technologie pour améliorer l’efficacité d’enseignement plutôt que de rehausser les approches existantes d’enseignement. L’apprentissage concret dans les cours d’ingénierie appliquée souffrirait grandement si l’accent n’est pas mis sur l’expérience pratique. The Australian Government?s Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program launched in 2006 obliges companies that use more than 0.5 PJ (petajoule) or roughly 139 GWh (gigawatt hour) per year to conduct an energy assessment in order to identify measures to improve energy efficiency. The opportunities identified by the mining sector were assembled in the Mining Significant Opportunities Register that permitted companies not yet embracing and adopting an energy management program to see what those who are, were doing and how much energy was saved, and helps disseminate best practice. The measures can be filtered by company, year, category or equipment type. The creation of a central repository of energy efficiency initiatives is valuable but this existing database could be improved; fields identifying the energy and carbon emission savings associated with a given initiative are a surprising omission. Consequently it does not permit the relative effectiveness of different measures for energy and carbon reductions to be readily assessed. A review of energy management efforts implemented in the mining industry, published in peer reviewed journals, corporate sustainability reports or industry publications during the last 40 years has revealed many examples of best practice. However, the lack of a standardized reporting framework in any of these sources has made it difficult to assess the effectiveness and compare the adopted energy management measures ? just as is the case with the Australian register. In an attempt to address these issues, an improved database structure has been created for energy management measures from the mining industry which identifies energy and financial savings arising from energy management initiatives, classifies applications to specific processes or equipment, and recognizes leaders in the mining industry with respect to energy management. The structure of the register includes the key data relevant to energy management in mining that is absent in the Australian version. The mining industry energy management database has been made available in the public domain where stakeholders can examine the best practice examples. Mining energy champions may also contribute to the register by providing case studies; a standardized entry template affords a quality assurance dimension that is absent in other reporting initiatives. Adoption of this database with its standardized reporting mechanism will enhance transparency of the mining industry in energy matters and help it maintain its social license to operate.

Municipal governments recognize the importance of aggregates in the local economy and the need to manage this resource in the interest of the public good. They have encountered problems with regulating the industry and the dichotomy between the urban need and the rural source. They have suffered from a lack of financial benefit, an adequate aggregate inventory, provincial strategy, economic information and public understanding. A provincial strategy for ensuring the availability of aggregate supplies to developing areas of the Province is essential. The Province should also be responsible for licensing, research, technical expertise on rehabilitation, public education and financial assistance. Upper-tier municipalities (regions or counties) should assume responsibility for resource management, including resource availability, demand characteristics, truck routing, phasing of resource development and sequential land-use planning. Area municipalities (towns and townships) can best determine the social and environmental impact of a specific aggregate development proposal and should therefore have the primary responsibility for the location of new pits and quarries. They should also have the authority to supplement provincial regulations concerning operating standards and the phasing and standards of site rehabilitation.

"Recent changes in regulations and scientific advances concerning selenium bioaccumulation have placed greater importance on non-biological treatment systems for selenium control. Mining wastewater contains hexavalent selenium (selenate) as the predominant aqueous species and possibly small amounts of tetravalent selenium (selenite). Non-biological removal of selenite is accomplished readily and cost effectively by ferric co-precipitation and adsorption using ferric oxyhydroxides sourced from ferric salts or iron anodes in electrocoagulation cells. Selenate on the other hand is difficult to remove. It is often incorrectly assumed that electrocoagulation is suitable for removing both selenite and selenate. Selenate removal efficiency by electrocoagulation is low and the amount of waste residue produced high. In contrast, BioteQ’s Selen-IX™ process removes selenate very efficiently and produces a much smaller amount of stable residue. The process combines selective ion exchange with electro-reduction of selenate in electrocells that physically resemble electrocoagulation cells but are designed and operated differently. This paper summarizes four years of pilot scale demonstration on a wide range of mine waters and discusses the key benefits and limitations of Selen-IX™. The pros and cons of combining ion exchange with electro-reduction in comparison to direct electro-reduction of selenate are also reviewed.INTRODUCTION Selenium in Mining and Mineral Processing Effluents Similar to sulphate and metals, selenium presence in mining and mineral processing wastewater originates from minerals contained in the mined deposits. Therefore, no organoselenium species are typically present in these kinds of waters and inorganic species including selenite (SeO32-), selenate (SeO42) and elemental selenium account for the majority, if not all, selenium present in these streams. Elemental selenium is not always present in mine water but is often contained in smelter wastewater. To comply with new environmental regulations, a successful water treatment plant must remove selenium from all these forms effectively and economically without generating by-products that are difficult to dispose of or manage. Elemental selenium can be dealt with using filtration or gravity separation in clarifiers often assisted by flocculants and/or coagulants. Mine impacted waters typically contain other forms of suspended solids which are removed from water in this way. Once the solids are removed, the selenium species that remain untreated are the dissolved forms. In mining waters this is mostly selenate with small fraction of selenite. In smelter wastewater, the majority could be selenite. It is well established that tetravalent selenium is readily removed from water by using ferric iron co-precipitation at pH > 4 (NAMC SWG, 2010). Ferric hydroxide/ferrihydrite solids act as the adsorbent for tetravalent selenium when it is in one of the ionic forms of biselenite or selenite. This treatment for tetravalent selenium is highly efficient. Therefore, tetravalent selenium removal is generally not an issue and is often easily incorporated into lime neutralization or unit operations such as electrocoagulation used for removing other metals present in mine impacted waters. Another option of dealing with tetravalent selenium is sulphide precipitation in acidic pH which produces SeS2 and can separate selenite from other metals and/or sludge produced at neutral to alkali pH."
