In this paper, we attempt to answer an often asked question, how can metal mining be compatible with the principles of sustainable development. Starting with the classic Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," we make the case that mining is or should be sustainable, using examples of sustainable practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated U.S primary copper producer. These examples cover the entire mining cycle starting with exploration, mining, beneficiation, smelting, refining, closure and post-closure and post-mining land use. It is hoped that the presentation will challenge the mining industry to even greater innovation as future mineral development projects are planned.

Selection of a suitable site for a metallurgical plant is crucial for the success of the business case. For a brownfield project, with the decision to locate the project on a site with existing production facilities and activities, the selection of the site has been made. For a greenfield project, important economic and logistical considerations include proximity to primary and secondary resources and/or to the market, infrastructure, and access to energy and water. National and regional aspects, including the social license to operate, can be decisive in final site selection. Key to recruiting and retaining a labour force are proximity to urban areas, along with weather and health conditions at the site. Risk factors include site geotechnical parameters and topography, contamination, as well as probability and types of potential natural disasters.

"L'objectif principal recherché lors du broyage d 'un minerai est de libérer adéquatement ses valeurs utiles en vue de leur concentration ultérieure. La pratique courante consiste à tenter d'obtenir un produit de broyage d'une granulométrie constante. Malheureusement, les propriétés texturales des minéraux utiles varient naturellement dans un gisement et une telle stratégie n'entraine pas toujours pour ces minéraux un degré de libération constant. Pour un rendement optimal du procédé de concentration, cette variable très importante doit donc être périodiquement vérifiée.Jusqu'à maintenant, la plupart des études de libération des minerais se font en examinant des sections polies de particules du minerai broyé. Le GRAAIM a récemment assemblé un système modulaire d'analyse d'images qui servira en grande partie à des mesures automatiques du degré de libération des minéraux. Le système s'avère relativement peu coûteux comparativement à la plupart des analyseurs de texture conventionnels si l'on considère que plusieurs de ses composantes, par exemple le miniordinateur, sont utilisées à une foule d'autres applications, et il permet de plus une grande souplesse d'utilisation puisque l'on a qu'à construire des algorithmes de mesure et de calcul en fonction de l'objectif recherché. Des programmes particuliers permettant des études automatiques de libération sur des sections polies de particules ont ainsi été élaborés. Ils permettent également des mesures de teneurs et de distributions granulométriques apparentes des particules. Des résultats obtenus dans le cas de minerais de fer sont brièvement présentés afin d'illustrer la technique."

"The modest thermal efficiency of the steam turbine cycle essentially determines the heat required and, therefore, the coal consumption and ash production of pulverized-coal-fired powerplants. This paper emphasizes how some properties of coal and its ash can crucially affect the operation of a steam generator and its flue gas cleaning equipment. A brief reference to some siting factors and economics reaffirms the all-pervasive influence of the properties of coal and ash and establishes the importance of a firm supply of cooling water. The economics of scale remains a compelling factor in selecting the size of units, despite disappointing performances by some of the larger units. Environmental considerations suggest that smaller units still have a role to play. IntroductionCoal fuelled one industrial and economic revolution, beginning two hundred year s ago . It was the precursor of competing fuels, notably natural gas, oil and uranium, which eclipsed it in terms of convenience and rate of growth.The turmoil that now exists because of rapidly dwindling supplies of no-longer-cheap oil and the concerns about nuclear energy-justified or unjustified-exacerbated by an operating incident at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Powerplant, prompt speculation for a resurgence of coal, especially where it cangenerate electricity to replace energy from imported oil.The world's reserves of coal are not inexhaustible, although they are ample for several decades. Of greater import is the fact that the world's coal reserve s are more widely distributed than its oil reserves, and they appear less convenient as instruments of economic and political persuasion by opportunist powers. The crux is whether or not the world will accept all that a massive, if temporary, return to coal implies.Combustion of pulverized coal in steam generators to pro duce electricity is a 50-year-old, well-understood technique; it is undergoing continuous refinement to meet evolving environmental and economic criteria and is not found wanting. It is certainly the only technique available and technologically advanced enough to replace oil immediately on a large scale. Although it may take a decade to bring a new coal-fired powerplant into service, this delay is a reflection on nontechnical and administrative processes. Capital and operating costs of coal-fired powerplants are significant and subject to inflation, but, because of the accumulated experience in this field, the ability to control costs is better than for those energy processes which are less mature or still in embryo form. More exotic, soft energy systems, touted as the panacea for world energy problems, have still to prove themselves on the scale they are needed and under the stringent climatic and operating conditions coal-fired powerplants have already mastered."

"The Abitibi volcano-plutonic belt forms the major portion of the Abitibi lithotectonic subprovince in the Superior Province. The Abitibi belt is composed essentially of"" (1) approximately 2.7 Ga old volcanic and sedimentary rocks; and (2) gabbro, tonalite, granodiorite and syenite intrusions occurring in well-defined prekinematic ( synvolcanic ), synkinematic and post-kinematic plutonic suites. Most of these rocks are metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Regional multi-phase deformation affects the volcano-sedimentary rocks. Deformation was initiated as these rocks were formed, and peaked at the end of the Keno ran orogeny with the emplacement of granitic batholiths.There are 145 former and current mines in the Quebec segment of the belt. To date, more than 420 Mt of ore have been extracted yielding 1,600 tonnesof Au, more than4,000 tonnesof Ag,4,400,000 tonnes of Cu and 5,300,000 tonnes of Zn. Mineral production is concentrated in geologic domains that approximately coincide with the boundaries of lithotectonic domains. We have compared the geology and mineral deposits of different domains to illustrate their distinct metallogenic signature. Certain domains are dominantly gold-producing (Cadillac-Malartic, Val-d'Or, Caopatina), others are base-metal producers (Matagami and Normetal), while others produce both gold and base metals ( Rouyn-Noranda, Chibougamau, Casa-Berardi-Joutel).Gold is extracted from quartz-rich vein deposits (for example, Val-d' Or), sulfide-rich veindeposits(Cadillac or Chibougamau) and from volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits ( Rouyn-Noranda). Base metals are generally mined from volcanogenic massive sulfide( RouynNoranda, Matagami, Normetal), although certain vein deposits yield base metals (Chibougamau) . Certain sectors are dominantly zincrich (Matagami, Normetal)."

Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. The mineral industry in India is an important contributor to the country?s GDP and foreign trade, and also a significant source of employment generation. The industry is distributed almost all across the country and has operations in some of the remotest areas, where it has also served as a sole source of infrastructure development. India produces 89 minerals, out of which four are fuel minerals, 11 metallic, 52 non-metallic and 22 minor minerals. The mining leases are occupying about 0.21% of the total land mass of the country. Indian mining industry is characterized by a large number of small operational mines (approx 3000 mines). Appropriate systems have been put in place to ensure sustainable growth of the sector, which include formulation of procedures for scientific prospecting and mining and development of a mechanism of prior environmental and forest clearances for mining projects. Main emphasis is to protect the health and safety of mine workers, as well as to safeguard the interests of indigenous people through rehabilitation and resettlement packages. Efforts are under way to mainstream the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in order to promote equity in the mining industry. The issue of scientific closure and reclamation of the abandoned mine sites poses a major challenge. Present paper illustrated several initiatives have been taken in this direction along with case studies, which could be replicated in other parts of the country.

"Abstract - The Meadowbank gold deposits are hosted by a series of polydeformed and metamorphosed auriferous iron formations located in the Neoarchean Woodburn Lake group, western Churchill province, Nunavut. The supracrustal rocks in the Meadowbank area consist of a thick sequence of intermediate-composition volcanic rocks with intercalated iron formation, ultramafic volcanic rocks, and quartzite to quartz arenite. U-Pb geochronology gives an interpreted age of 2711 ± 3 Ma for the host strata at Meadowbank.The intermediate volcanic rocks are predominately volcaniclastic and have a geochemical composition that is consistent with an active continental margin setting. Iron formation deposition was coeval with the intermediate volcanism, as indicated by incorporation of volcanic detritus in the chemical precipitate. The geochemistry of the iron formation indicates that it precipitated from a fluid that at one time was at high temperature (>250°C), reducing, and likely acidic. Intercalated ultramafic rocks rarely show spinifex textures and have trace element ratios that are consistent with mantle plume-related undepleted mantle asthenosphere, likely recording episodic mantle upwelling associated with rifting in an active continental margin. The contact between the ultramafic volcanic rocks and the overlying quartz arenite is a disconformity marked by a quartz pebble conglomerate. However, similar geology on the structural hanging wall and footwall of the contact suggests that the conglomerate does not represent a significant hiatus in deposition, and is more likely a prograding terriginous siliciclastic unit.Three metamorphic events are recognized. The first, M1, is a cryptic greenschist facies event that is pre-D2. The second event, M2, is a mid-greenschist to amphibolite facies, syn-D2 event. M3 is the last event recognized, and is a post-tectonic greenschist facies event that is regional but inhomogeneous in extent, possibly reflecting thermal aureoles around post-tectonic 1.7 to 1.8 Ga Nueltin granites. The structural geology of the area is complex with four phases of deformation recognized, two of which had a significant effect on the geometry of the deposit. All of these regional events are interpreted as Paleoproterozoic in age. Relationships between deformation fabrics and mineralization, as well as the overall geometry of the mineralized envelopes, suggest that the deposit formed during syn- to late-D2. Superimposed on the mineralization are D4 structural elements that postdate gold mineralization.The main control on gold mineralization is replacement of magnetite by pyrrhotite and pyrite in high-strain corridors. The composition of amphiboles and chlorites associated with gold mineralization is remarkably consistent and shows no spatial or temporal variation, suggesting that it was buffered by the iron-rich nature of the host rocks. The bulk metasomatic effect on the intermediate volcanic rocks is characterized by the addition of K2O and the loss of CaO, Na2O, and MgO, with little variation in the total iron content. The elemental losses are likely the result of destruction of feldspars, stilpnomelane, and ferroactinolite, which are relatively common in the unmineralized rocks, and the formation of sericite, chlorite, and grunerite."

Materials for construction of equipment used in hydrometallurgical plants are selected based on a combination of their ability to perform as required in aggressive process environments as well as their cost. As a material of construction, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) has been shown to provide equal if not improved durability relative to alternative materials such as corrosion resistant alloys at a considerably lower cost. This is particularly true in the case of equipment used in acid leaching processes for copper, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements. The selection and extensive use of FRP over alloys in new hydromet plant construction in North and South America illustrates this advantage of FRP effectively. This paper will compare corrosion performance and cost of plant equipment fabricated with stainless steel alloys and FRP made with Epoxy Vinyl Ester thermoset resins. Real world case histories for FRP piping, storage tanks, extraction vessels, and electrowinning cells combined with laboratory based corrosion studies will be reviewed to demonstrate how FRP materials are selected for hydrometallurgical equipment.

Slag fuming has remained a key process for the recovery of Zn, Pb, and minor elements in the integrated flow sheet at Teck Cominco's Trail Operations for more than 75 years. Since the start-up of the KIVCETTM process and the #3 slag fuming furnace in 1997, a range of process intensification projects have been completed to improve metals recoveries and throughput based on improved process control, mechanical modifications, and, most recently, the implementation of oxygen enrichment of the blast air. This latter project, initially named 'nitrogen depletion' and now 'nitrogen oxygen performance enhancement' (NOPE), is the primary focus of this paper. NOPE reduces the amount of heat required to heat the inert nitrogen gas, and therefore more of the energy input can be used for reduction. It also frees up boiler capacity because the inert nitrogen gas does not then have to be cooled down. A dynamic METSIMTM model was developed to determine the opportunities to improve the process capacity and heat balance to both assist with justifying the project and to verify the observed furnace behaviour. Several process safety management issues were also addressed and a few key minor mechanical modifications were made to allow the project to proceed to commercial implementation at 25% blast air oxygen enrichment. Short term plant trials have confirmed the model predictions. The first three months of a long term, continuous trial showed a 6% increase in zinc fuming rate from average furnace performance despite the implementation of a KIVCETTM fluxing change to assist with minor element recovery that was expected to negatively impact the zinc fuming rate by 3 to 5%. This encouraging result is also in line with the model predictions.

"This paper describes the sinking of a circular concrete ventilation shaft through 110feet of water-bearing overburden. The brine circulation freezing method was used to stabilize the walls during excavation. In order to take advantage of the cold winter weather, a custom-built heat exchanger (natural radiator) was installed in place of the standard mechanical refrigeration plant.IntroductionIn the late fall of 1979, Les Mines Selbaie awarded a contract to the firm of 1.S. Redpath Limited to sink a ventilation shaft on its property in northwestern Quebec. The shaft was to be sunk through 110 feet of water-bearing overburden and approximately 90 feet of rock to a final depth of 200 feet below surface. The water table was measured at 16 feet below the surface elevation.After examining the soils report and diamond drill core from the shaft area, Redpath came to the conclusion that freezing was the best way to stabilize the overburden for sinking. LocationThe mine site is 420 statute miles due north of Toronto, just east of the Ontario/Quebec border (Fig. 1). Access to the site is provided by a development road built by the Quebec government from the Matagami/lames Bay Highway. History of Ground Freezing In the Mining IndustryIn 1862, shortly after the development of mechanical refrigeration, a mine shaft was sunk through an artificially frozen water-bearing formation in the United Kingdom. The first application of ground freezing in North America was for a Michigan iron ore shaft in 1888. Since that time, the freezing method has been used to sink hundreds of shafts throughout the world. Its best known application was to sink sixteen shafts through the Blairmore Formation in Saskatchewan.The same method has been used in every case. It involves chilling a calcium chloride brine solution and circulating the brine in concentric pipes, spaced between 3 and 6 feet around the shaft perimeter and usually 4 to 5 feet from the limits of the proposed shaft excavation."

"The technology behind industrial applications such as Hydrometallurgy continues to evolve, as do the corresponding regulations and specifications that ensure the safety of workers and the environment. Valves make up key aspects of this technology, and often represent the single point of failure for entire operations. More often than not, the valves being used in Hydrometallurgy applications are known as Severe Service Valves (SSVs) due to their ability to withstand the extreme conditions. Most experts agree that SSVs are identified by applications, and that these applications are challenging to the valve’s ability to provide a minimum acceptable level of performance over a minimum acceptable duration. The Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) of the Valve and Fittings Industry has designated Ross Waters, President of CGIS, as Lead to the Task Force put in place to determine the minimum requirements a valve needs to be able to perform to when faced with extreme conditions, whether from pressure, temperature, toxicity, solids, or usage. This paper serves to determine what the minimum requirements are for SSVs in Hydrometallurgy applications. It will draw on five decades of industry experience from one of Canada’s leading valve experts.INTRODUCTION Severe Service Valves Severe Service Valves (SSVs) mean different things to different people. Until today, defining SSVs had little if any global agreement or recognition. That is about to change as the Manufacturers Standardization Society (MSS) has accepted an application to produce a Standard Practice so defining them. This paper provides information about the selection of SSVs in all industries but focusses on metallurgical processes and applications and offers examples to illustrate the successful and unsuccessful use of these valves. All of this with the purpose of raising the awareness of the industry on all sides, from the suppliers and manufacturers, specifiers and to the users and owners of them. It also supplies tools to understand where and why to separate SSVs from general purpose or commodity valves (GPVs). SSVs are often identified by applications, and these applications are challenging to the valve’s ability to survive. Within these applications the elements that make the service severe are being analyzed, quantified and qualified. From this, we expect to offer objective and repeatable definitions and guidance to improve the experience of SSVs, reduce unnecessary costs, provide longer service life and process runs, improve safety and reduce environmental issues."

"Yamana Chapada’s mine is one of the larger copper-gold mines in Brazil. The mine is located in Goiás state, in the central part of Brazil. The mine has estimated Mineral Reserves of 4.1 million ounces of gold and 3.2 billion pounds of copper as of December 31, 2016. While gold and silver are significant, Chapada’s process flowsheet is configured closer to that of copper facilities. This includes a SAG/Ball configuration for grinding followed by flotation. In the case of Chapada, the mineralogy results in higher-than-normal complexity, notably a significant circulating load both in the grinding and flotation circuits. From an operating perspective, the complexities are controllable, but require careful attention to ensure that circulating loads are effectively managed and gold is not lost to tailings. Chapada created an automation roadmap in 2016 designed to increase plant performance (tonnage, recovery and efficiency). Based on strong potential, the project was fast tracked and within 4 months instruments were installed, control algorithms implemented, and training sessions took place to ensure sustainability at site. This paper will follow the Chapada journey from identifying the opportunities through to implementation and testing.IntroductionYamana Chapada mine is a Copper-Gold mine located in Goiás State, Brazil. Although the mine contains large quantities in Mineral Reserve of gold (4.1 million contained oz as of December 31, 2016), Chapada is primarily a copper mine with copper principally found as chalcopyrite. Accordingly, the processing flowsheet at Chapada is comparable to that of other copper mines with a SAG and Ball mill each partnered with a cyclopack, followed by a flotation circuit. While the overall design is conventional, the mineralogy at Chapada results in significant circulating loads both in the grinding and flotation circuits. This does introduce certain complexities for operating strategies and practices, but, importantly, favourable recoveries and elevated processing rates can be maintained, albeit they need to be closely managed. Plant automation helps in this regard."

IN the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels, and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated. The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not !end themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition, the present operations in this particular seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not en-countered on the upper level. Coal will, without question, long continue to be an important factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion.

This paper provides an overview of the patenting process as it pertains to the fields of metallurgy and mining, and summarizes some general patenting strategies. A review of new "green technology" initiatives recently adopted by Patent Offices around the world is also provided.

"IntroductionThe Maurice Bay deposit is one of a number of uranium deposits that have been found in recent years in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan (Tremblay, 1982). This deposit, along with the others, belongs to the unconformity type deposits (Beck, 1977). They are, for the most part, polymetallic, being characterized by a suite of metals which include U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, V, Ag, Au, Pt-group elements, S, As, Bi, Se, Te, and Mo, some of which, besides U, are present in economic concentrations (Amok, 1974; Ruzicka, 1975; Tapaninen, 1976; Hoeve and Sibbald, 1978; Dahlkamp, 1978). The Maurice Bay deposit was known to be a small low grade deposit in which the ore was essentially monomineralic, consisting mainly of pitchblende (Harper, 1978). However, the occurrence of trace amounts of some of the elements common in the larger polymetallic ore bodies (e.g. Key Lake, Cluff Lake D) was anticipated. Thus a lithogeochemical sampling project was undertaken in 1979 across part of the Maurice Bay deposit (Harper, 1979). Major oxides (SiO2, Al2O3, FeO, Fe2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, Na2O, MnO, P2O5, and TiO2) and a group of the most common trace metals (U, Ni, Co, Cu, Pb, As, Au, V, and Se) were analyzed to determine whether any elemental patterns (halos or depletions) could be detected which would reduce the number of pathfinder elements needed for exploration purposes. In addition to the above metals, Th was also checked because some conglomerate strata in the Maurice Bay area are known to be thorium-enriched (Harper, 1978). Only the trace metal distributions will be discussed in detail in this report.General GeologyThe Maurice Bay area is underlain by three major groups of rocks, the White Lake metamorphic complex, an unnamed granodiorite complex, and the Athabasca Group, described previously (Fig. 1; Harper, 1979). "The 2010/11 Canterbury earthquakes triggered many mass movements in the Port Hills including rockfalls, rock and debris avalanches, slides and slumps and associated cliff-top cracking. The most abundant mass movements with the highest risk to people and buildings were rockfalls and rock/debris avalanches. Over 100 residential homes were impacted by landslides, leading to the evacuation of several hundred residents.Volumes of rock leaving several of the larger cliffs during the earthquake sequence were determined from terrestrial laser scan change models. There were no seismically instrumented cliff sites and there was some distance between the cliffs and nearest strong-motion sites. Therefore, we synthesised free-field rock-outcrop seismograms by employing a stochastic approach controlled by source models and regional parameters derived using spectral inversion of the extensive strong motion data set. Relationships between volumes leaving cliffs during the earthquakes and site peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and Arias intensity were compared for different sites. Multiple linear regression was used to analyse the variables that best predict the volumes of debris that fell from the slopes during the main earthquakes. The best correlation between the volume of debris falling per square metre of slope face and the seismic forcing parameters was for vertical PGV. The results from the multiple linear regression incorporating slope height, inclination, PGV horizontal and PGV vertical, improved the statistical relationship.Field data and results from the 2D seismic site response assessment indicate that the following factors affect dynamic performance of the modelled cliffs: 1) cliff geology—mainly material modulus, shear strength and shear wave velocity; 2) slope geometry—ridge-scale versus site-scale effects; and 3) the temporal aspects of the earthquake shaking (i.e., single acceleration peaks of large amplitude versus multiple peaks of smaller amplitude). Model results show that amplification of shaking does not increase linearly with increasing height, but instead reflects changes in the cliff geology where material strength, modulus and shear-wave velocity contrasts lead to acceleration contrasts.These factors show that the use of well documented case histories provide the basis for more certainty in seismic landslide assessments compared to those that are only empirically based."
