The key to successful mine production plan and subsequent operation is efficient mine layout design and optimization. Pit layout design and optimization allow the delineation and extraction of mineable reserves and the minimum waste subject to slope stability, economic, quality and quantity constraints. Many design and optimization software packages have been developed to aid this intensive and challenging process. These packages include VULCAN, SURPAC, DATAMINE, GEMCOM, MICROLYNX, MEDSYSTEM and MINESIGHT. These software packages are developed as integrated computer-aided systems used for database creation, survey, geological and geostatistical modeling, mine planning and production optimization and environmental modeling. In Turkey, many mining companies still plan and design mine layouts with traditional hand methods. In this study, VULCAN has been used to design and optimize the Eti-Bor A.S. Kestelek Boran Open Pit Mine in Western Turkey. The main objective is to show the company the superior advantages of mine planning software for designing and optimizing mine layouts over the traditional hand methods. Drill hole data used by the company to estimate the reserves for planning are used in this study. The ore grade varies between %1,04 B2O3 to %47,33 B2O3. The pit toe and crest strings are projected using variable batter angles and berm distances. On the north side, batter angle is 180 and berm distance is 25 meters, on the south side, batter angle is 320 and berm distance is 15 meters. In addition to that open pit bench height is 10 meter. The concepts of block modeling are applied to the Kestelek open pit mine with detailed ore grade modeling for each block. The Lerchs-Grossmann?s algorithm is used to optimize this mine based on the block model, the economic block values for each block and the underlying field constraints. The results from VULCAN were similar to the estimates by hand. The reserve estimates from VULCAN is 13,192,870 tons compared with the hand estimate of 13,200,000 tons, overburden estimates of 15,622,889 m3 compared with 15,000,000m3 obtained by hand with a stripping ratio 1.18:1 (m3:ton) from VULCAN versus 1.14:1 (m3:ton) from hand estimate. Vulcan improves the efficiency, speed and reproducibility of the planning results. It provides mining engineers, geologists and surveyors with a cost-effective modular system for assessing and planning the mine layouts. Furthermore, Vulcan?s specific modules allow efficient access and manipulation of databases, open pit mine design, block models, optimized 3D mine layouts, and more. However, for competitive business in Eastern Europe, VULCAN should improve its software support. Effective training, help desk support systems and nearby distributors with just-in-time solutions to company problems will generate competitive business for VULCAN.

Introduction The Sydney coal-field extends for a distance of thirty miles along the northeastern coast of Cape Breton island. At a central focal point at the tip of the south arm of Sydney harbour, seven miles or so in from the Atlantic ocean, is the city of Sydney, with Port Morien to the southeast and Sydney Mines to the north . Mining centres along the ocean coast between these points include Birchgrove, Reserve, Glace Bay, and Waterford. The field is divided into three districts or 'basins', namely, Morien basin to the south, Glace Bay in the centre, and the Lingan-Sydney Mines basin to the northeast. The eastern and western portions of the latter are known as the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basins, respectively. Six distinct coal seams are described as existing in the Morien basin, nine in the Glace Bay basin, and six in both the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basin. Although known by different names in the several basins, a definite continuity of the seams has been established.

Unplanned ore dilution has a direct and large influence on the cost of a stope, and ultimately on the profitability of a mining operation. This paper presents results of a study on the influence of a variety of factors on ore dilution in a blasthole stoping environment. A series of 3-D numerical models were developed and analyzed to examine the effect of mining depth, stope geometry and stope setting within the orezone extraction sequence. To quantify modelled ore dilution from the three-dimensional simulations, the ore Dilution Density (DD) is a term introduced in this study to denote potential hanging-wall overbreak. It was found that hanging-wall overbreak is not significantly influenced by depth alone, and that stopes with large or small axial ratios are more stable than large rectangular stopes. It was also demonstrated that, in addition to stope dimension, the amount of unplanned dilution differed according to stope type. Five stope types were identified, based on their position within a tabular blasthole mining sequence. The methodology presented in this paper can be adopted to develop mine-specific design tools for the estimation of ore dilution associated with a proposed mine design. This can prove extremely helpful in the process of underground mine planning and optimization.

"Autoclaves have been in commercial use in the mining industry since the early 1950's the initial applications included tin, uranium, cobalt, nickel and copper extraction under both acidic and alkaline conditions. These circuits varied in batch or continuous operation. The geometry has been spherical, vertical, and horizontal type with up to six agitators, with throughput as high as 1000 stpd.Presently autoclaves are a good process selection for many refractory sulphide gold bearing ores. The first application of pressure oxidation in the gold industry was at the Homestake Mcglaughlin's Mine which was commissioned in 1985. This was an acidic pressure oxidation process treating 3000 stpd in three four compartment horizontal autoclaves 14' diameter and 53' long. Since the initiation of autoclaves for the treatment of gold bearing sulphides, there are presently 16 gold autoclaves operating worldwide varying in size up to 18'4"" inside diameter. There are seven autoclaves for the treatment of refractory sulphide gold bearing ores to be commissioned in 1997 and 1998.Autoclave technology has progressed extensively since the mid-eighties. Operational experience has made rapid progress and the result is much smoother and safer autoclave operation. There have been many advances in autoclave technology design. For example, the use of exotic materials for corrosion resistance to reduce down time for maintenance. The instrumentation involved in autoclave operation is very sophisticated which allows for many safety features. The advanced design has allowed for greater availability and as a result operating costs and maintenance costs have decreased. These technological advancements have made autoclave technology more safe and this has resulted in a greater acceptance of this type of operation. Many of the gold autoclave facilities operate up to 9 months continuously without shutdowns. The advancement of autoclave technology has inspired many new applications.Because of the outstanding operation of autoclaves in the gold industry, many other applications for autoclave technology are being considered. Different management options and rehabilitation strategies are available for mine wastes that produce acid mine drainage (AMD). One of them consists in building a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) on the tailings to limit the availability of oxygen, an essential component of the chemical reactions leading to the generation of AMD. Prior to cover construction, a monitoring strategy must be established to evaluate the response and performance of the cover system. The key parameters to monitor should include matric suction and volumetric water content in the CCBE, oxygen flux (and/or oxygen concentration) through and below the cover, and the main meteorological parameters for the impoundment. In this paper, different techniques available to measure the targeted parameters are described and their main properties are given. Recommendations (based on existing cases) on the location and the number of monitoring stations and on the measurement frequency for each monitored parameter are also proposed.

Mining mobile equipment is becoming larger in order to lower operation cost and increase productivity; however, their performance characteristics are often limited by the tire capabilities. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of tire research, the lack of comprehensive knowledge on tire performance characteristics impedes the advancement of off-the-road tires. Longer haul roads, and a severe operating environment make tires more vulnerable than other components of a vehicle. Furthermore, due to a limited availability of large tires, mines are facing shortages. Thus mines and tire service companies are keen to improve tire performance, extend tire life and hence lower operating costs. This paper reviews the relevant tire performance research, analyzes tire interactions with the surrounding environment, tire maintenance practices and operational issues using a case study based on data collected during an ongoing project with Fountain Tire.

Conditional simulation is now an accepted tool for managing ore block design at a number of operating mines. It provides a way to consider the quality of data, local continuity and economic risk in defining ore and waste across the cut-off boundary. In addition a computer based system can ensure consistency in making decisions to meet multiple criteria such as cut-off grades, minimum ore-block size and contaminant grade limits. The development of a procedure for using multiple criteria allows ore blocks to be defined using alternative strategies depending on the specific production requirements. This has introduced the opportunity to define ore blocks for different destinations based on their material types and opens the way for geometallurgical modelling to be incorporated into grade control.

"In this work, we apply a method known as the attainable region (AR) technique in order to optimize the milling and leaching process of a low grade gold ore. No work on the application of the AR optimization technique has been done yet on a joint milling and leaching process. The advantage of the AR approach lies in its ability to simplify the optimization problem, as searching over a defined set for the maximum of an objective function is a fairly standard procedure. The objective function we selected was that of optimizing a linear function of the value of the recovered material minus the cost of both milling and leaching. Using the three variables (milling time, leaching time and recovery), we constructed a 3D plot and used it to obtain all the possible recoveries from the different milling and leaching times. The optimum for our chosen objective was then found by overlaying a contour plot of the objective function on the 3D plot. Our results show that the optimum was obtained at 90 % recovery with a profit value of 600, milling time of 30 minutes and leaching time of 1750 minutes.INTRODUCTIONAfrican countries are facing a general increase in demand for electrical power. In South Africa, the demand is now surpassing the supply from ESKOM, the main electric power provider of the country. This has resulted in load shedding strategies being implemented in many local communities in an attempt by ESKOM to cope with the high demand. A potentially better approach is to propose use of energy efficient technologies in the country’s largest power consuming industry; the mineral processing sector.In mineral processing, milling is the highest consumer of energy. The objective of carrying out milling is not merely to reduce the particle size of the feed material, but also to liberate the constituent minerals that make up an ore. This is done so that valuable minerals can be separated from the gangue, in downstream processes, such as leaching. However, the milling process is generally performed relatively poorly, and at a considerable expense in terms of electrical power utilization. Tomanec and Milovanovic (1994) estimated that milling accounts for more than 50 % of the total power used in the concentration process, but this can rise to as high as 70 % for hard or finely dispersed and inter-grown ores. Apart from being relatively wasteful of energy, the milling process is also inefficient with regard to mineral liberation because of the indiscriminate nature of the grinding force."

"The Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) has been operating successfully for 14 years, and has an ancestry dating back over 30 years. Together with complementary developments in stock exchange listing rules, the Code has brought about substantially improved standards of public reporting by Australasian mining and exploration companies. The Code is regarded as a world leader in its field, and has been used as a basis for the development of resource/reserve reporting standards in other countries. The reasons for its success are varied, foremost among them being its adoption in full by the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and the ability and willingness of mining industry organizations to bring Competent Persons to account when necessary.The latest revision of the JORC Code was undertaken in 2002-2003, based in part on releases of upgraded reporting standards in Canada, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, and South Africa, and the 2003 edition is expected to be released mid-year. Two of the more significant changes are: the introduction of a requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation upon which Exploration Results are reported; and inclusion in the definition of a Competent Person of a reference to “Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations” being overseas professional organizations to which Competent Persons may belong for the purpose of preparing documentation for the submission of reports to the Australian Stock Exchange."

"The paper gives an overview of the economics condition and strategic business challanges of the mining&metallurgy sector and their possible impact on the future development of the Bor basin of copper in Serbian part of Danube Region. Economics and strategic challanges in the mining& metallurgy complex are emphasized by world economic and financial crisis. An analysis of strategic challanges is undertaken by application of a comprehensive development framework approach. Paper indicates that an economics and evaluation of possible impacts of constraints and challenges for the development of Bor basin shows that it must be included in corporative decision, local and regional plans.INTRODUCTIONRisks are characteristic of every strategic development and business decision-making, so their successful management should be a part of the development strategy of the corporation, especially longterm. Due to the growing uncertainty in the general socio-economic environment, “risk management”, risk insurance, risk control, risk culture, risk optimization are frequently talked about. Among the key risks at a corporate level are the financial risks and risks of the regulative framework, especially in the field of environment and land use. In both cases, it is a question of external risks, which the companies need to relativize and successfully manage. Some companies pay more attention to production risks and search for better solutions in that domain which is not enough (Ernst&Young, 2008). Strategic business risks appear mostly on the macro-economic level, from where they should be” transferred” onto the level of sector economics and action level in corporations. Risk management include transferring the risk to other parts, avoiding the risk, preventing hazard, reducing the negative effect or probability of the risk, accepting some or all of the consequences of a particular risk.The research has included perspective and the general market trend and market positioning of the production and copper processing complex in the world; the impact of the requirements and strategic goals of the EU Directive and Kyoto Protocol on the institutional and other adjustments important for business in this sector; the impact assessment of the regulations important for business in the mining and metals sector, and case study of economics and challenges for the development of mining and metallurgy sector in the Bor basin of copper in Serbian part of Danube region. The analysis has included the identification and assessment of the global challenges on the future development of the copper complex in the miningsmelting basin Bor. Presented results in the paper are part of the research project “Sustainable spatial development of the Danube area in Serbia"" (No. 036036), financed by Ministry of Education and science of Republic Serbia."

Early evaluations of Pasquia Hills kerogen shale deposits by Geological Survey of Canada, Saskatchewan Geological Survey, Manitoba Energy and Mines and Sun Oil Company, using modified Fischer Assay, Rock-Eval and other techniques, estimated recoverable reserves of about 2.6x109 barrels of oil in areas favorable for strip-mining; each metric ton of ore was determined to yield about 30 L to 50 L of shale oil remarkably high in aromatic compounds. Western Petrochemical Corp. (WPC) is holding two Oil Shale Exploration Permits covering about 76,635 hectares in the Pasquia Hills Region of eastern Saskatchewan and conducting a 15-corehole drilling program to determine stratigraphic correlation on both first and second white specks kerogen shale. In this program, correlation will be established between oil yield and oil quality, using different retort techniques, including modified Fischer Assay, steam retort and Rock-Eval. Results will lead to further resource evaluation and to a preliminary engineering design for a shale processing plant, including selection of retort process, upgrading of shale oil to petrochemical feedstock, hydrogen management, energy balance and evaluation of environmental impact.

Three types of reference gold catalysts, i.e., 3wt%Au/TiO2 (Au-Ti: Type A), and 0.3wt%Au/Fe2O3 on alumina beads (AUS: Type B), and 5wt%Au/Fe2O3 (Au-Fe: Type C), were produced in a test plant scale by Sud-Chemie Catalysts Japan, INC. under the licensing of AIST. To evaluate the validity of the preparation methods and conditions used for the reference samples, elemental analyses by ICP, particle size measurements by TEM, and catalytic activity measurements for the oxidation of CO and H2 over these catalysts were made. Gold catalysts can be prepared in a large scale of ca 400g for the Au-Ti and Au-Fe catalysts, 5 kg for the AUS catalyst with good reproducibility. It was confirmed that they were available for useful as the reference gold catalysts of World Gold Council.

"Competitive pressures dictate that the mining industry moves to larger mobile underground haulage equipment with more advanced equipment mechanization, higher levels of autonomous operation of machines, and longer periods between access by maintenance personnel. Since such new machines will of necessity be more complex than existing designs, machine reliability has become a key issue in progressing toward advanced mobile underground haulage equipment. Reliability and maintainability models of such equipment are practically non-existent in the literature. This paper addresses the issue of reliability and maintainability of mobile underground haulage equipment on two fronts: reliability modelling to enhance decision making for maintenance planning; and reliability simulation to enable evaluation of more rigorous production planning scenarios. A case study from a gold mine in the Chilean Andes is presented, for which reliability models of mobile underground haulage equipment, specifically load-hauldump vehicles and underground haul trucks, are developed, and a reliability-based simulation implemented. IntroductionMaintenance accounts for 20% to 35% of the overall operating budget for a typical underground operation, and hence represents the largest portion of the mine’s controllable operating costs (Cutifani et al., 1996; Campbell, 1997; Goddard, 1998). When this prototype is placed on stream next to a conventional grinding mill as you suggest how do we estimate the power requirements and the grind which will be achieved?ReplyLet me explain the Macassa circuit. The tower mill here was running in parallel with one of the ball mills. The feed entering the tertiary system is scalped in a primary cyclone. The finial cut is made in a secondary cyclone. The actual feed to the tower mill is the underflow from the two cyclones and was split to the ball mill and tower mill. During the testing we were unable to isolate the tower mill to determine its contribution to the overall system. We then started to look at the amount of material produced across the mill. We entered the mill at between 17% and 20% finished material and exiting at between 36% and 40% finished material. We were able to project, with a high efficiency classification system, and arrived at 6 Kwh/ton or better."

"Up until the mid 1960's, the only available methods for making continuous weight measurements were through the use of mechanical and electro-mechanical weigh scales. It was during this time period that a new concept in weighing was introduced. It was known and is still known as the nuclear belt weigh scale.During the early days of its appearance in the market place, many things were learned about its advantages and disadvantages for weighing various materials. As with many new devices, it had to go through a ""wringing out stage"" before it became accepted by the weighing industry. Even today, even though it is a proven device, there are skeptics who believe the nuclear belt weigh scale will not survive. Let me assure you, it is here to stay.. 'PRINCIPLE OF MEASUREMENTThe nuclear belt weigh scale consists of a ""C"" Frame assembly which houses the radioactive source (Cesiwn 137) and the radiation detector (Ionization chamber). The ""C"" Frame assembly is put in place around the conveyor belt as shown in Figure 1. The radiation source emits a fan shaped beam of radiation which covers the full width of the material being conveyed on the belt. Radiation which has passed through the material on the belt is detected by the ionization chamber which is located in the lower arm of the ""C"" Frame assembly. The ionization chamber changes the radiation energy into an electrical signal which is related to pounds per foot belt loading. This signal is transmitted to a highly stable amplifier which combines the pounds per foot signal with a belt travel signal from a digital tachometer which allowed the scale user to be able to monitor total mass being conveyed. Many so-called conventional type scales use belt speed rather than travel to obtain mass per unit time, and then integrate the signal to obtain their weight signal. This unnecessary step tends to erode the overall accuracy of the weighing system."

"Albian Sands Energy (ASE), an oil sands surface mining and extraction operation, is currently undergoing start-up and is scheduled to ramp-up to full production by mid-2003. Startup includes the selection and implementation of over 75 IT systems or computer applications which include: engineering applications; systems required to control mining activities, maintenance, the processing plant and utilities; and also systems required to run the company, such as human resources, finances and inventory/ warehousing.This paper outlines the processes used for the selection, implementation and integration of these systems in order to optimize the use of information and to meet the technical, business and IT requirements of the company. The first step in ASE’s approach to identifying system requirements is the development of a business activity model, outlining all tasks involved in running the operations. The computer applications required to accomplish each task are then identified by having the IT team work closely with each technical and business unit. Historically, at some companies, the selection of systems has been led by the IT team or by consultants, with little input from the technical or business units. Typically, this results in products that do not meet the company’s expectations. To ensure a more positive outcome, ASE believes that it is imperative that the company’s technical and business people be closely involved in the selection process.Integration of the IT systems is also key, including linking all applications through a data warehouse and EDMS. Over 120 required integrations have been identified. This ensures the storage of all data in only one location, data security, and easy data and document retrieval for all requirements throughout the company"

"Since 1975, the Aluminium Pechiney Research Centre at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne (LRF) has been concentrating its efforts on designing, testing and perfecting the Aluminium Pechiney point-fed prebaked reduction cell.In 1979, the AP18 cell (180 kA) was industrially launched with the construction and start-up of the F line in Saint-Jean. The following generation, the AP30 (300 kA), with prototypes started in 1981, was launched in 1986 on the Saint-Jean G line. Along with cell design, efficient process control systems were developed to pilot alumina feeding and bath composition. Together, these pots are currently producing 4.6 Mt of aluminum, i.e., 18% of the world’s overall yearly production.In 1989, the research centre faced a new challenge: to push the limits for the size of a reduction cell to further improve the profitability of Greenfield projects. This new generation development was also the opportunity for a significant redesign of the Aluminium Pechiney electrolysis information system.With a track record of ten years of semiindustrial operation with three prototypes, the AP50 technology is now ready for industrial implementation and enables a significant breakthrough to be made in terms of return on investment of a Greenfield smelter."
