"Molybdenite flotation at the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex has been studied as a function of pulp potential controlled using two types of sodium sulfide (mineral and chemical origin). Air and either plant or laboratory nitrogen was used as a flotation carrier. Potential measurements were taken in the rougher cells as it was proved to be vital for molybdenite flotation. Flotation test with reducing potentials between -525 and -575 mv gave the highest molybdenum recovery (93%) and the lowest copper recovery of between 4 to 15% can be achieved. These potentials did not change considerably by adding increasing amounts of sodium sulfide. At more oxidizing potentials, i.e. more than -450 mv, the recovery of copper increases while the recovery of Molybdenite drops.INTRODUCTIONThe average copper ore feed grade to the Sarcheshmeh flotation circuit is typically set at about 1.2% Cu. to be delivered to processing unit is set at 1.2%. There is no control of molybdenum (Mo) which usually varies between 0.01 and 0.04%. During concentration, a Cu-Mo concentrate is produced by one stage of roughing, one stage of scavenging and two stages of cleaning. Final concentrate contains 0.5% of Mo and 32% of Cu while the particle size is 90% under 42 microns (325 mesh). Because of the high grade of Mo in this concentrate and economic interests, a molybdenite flotation circuit plant was built in 1984. This plant was designed to treat 1432 tons of Cu-Mo concentrate (on dry basis) and consists of one stage of roughing followed by seven stages of cleaning. After dewatering the concentrate contains 53.7% Mo which is dried and shipped overseas.The majority of molybdenite production worldwide comes as byproduct of copper porphyry ores. The Mo grade typically varies between 0.01 and 0.06% and accompanies chalcopyrite and chalcocite. Due to the hydrophobic nature of molybdenite, it can be floated along with copper sulfides. Thus the overall concentrate of Cu and Mo contains 0.2-1% of molybdenum as well as 20-42% of copper. To separate the Mo, Cu and Fe minerals, depressants are used. The most important of which are sodium sulfide, sodium hydrosulfide, Anomal D, sodium cyanide, ferropottasium and ferro-cyanide. The first three regeants have been extensively used for successfully treating porphyry ores [1]. In the molybdenum plant of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex only sodium sulfide has been used to date."

"The Kemess mining and milling complex is operated by Northgate Minerals Corporation and is located in the mountains of north-central British Columbia, 430 kilometers northwest of Prince George. The complex consists of the Kemess South open pit mine and a 52,000 tonnes per day mill. Hypogene, supergene and leach cap ores are processed using conventional crushing, grinding, and flotation techniques to produce gold-copper concentrates with minor by-product silver value.The rougher flotation concentrate is re-ground in closed circuit before being cleaned to final concentrate grade. Historically, gold losses in the cleaner tailings were primarily associated with pyrite, with only minor amounts of free gold. More recently, with the processing of high pyrite ores, the major losses were found to be free gold less than 10 microns in size. The fine grind required for the high pyrite ores resulted in over-grinding of the free gold particles in the regrind circuit, contributing to poor flotation characteristics. It was thought that if this free gold could be recovered by gravity at coarser size in the regrind circulating load, the free gold losses in the cleaner tailings could be reduced.Preliminary test work carried out by Knelson Gravity Solutions indicated the potential for free gold recovery in the regrind circuit. A Knelson XD-30 Concentrator was installed with variable speed capability, and a series of optimization tests were carried out. In addition, cleaner tailings were characterized with gravity operating and with gravity not operating to determine the overall gold recovery benefit. The single Knelson XD-30 installation recovers ~10% of the total gold in the regrind circuit and increases overall recovery by 3% when high pyrite ores are processed."

"Chemical and biological aspects of the formation of acidic effluents from sulfide waste materials are discussed. Test procedures to determine the acid producing potential of waste materials, as well as the characteristics of such acidic effluents, are presented. Practical applications of the test procedures are discussed with reference to predictior of environmentally unacceptable drainage and to estimation of metal recovery by dump leaching.INTRODUCTIONNatural leaching of sulfide minerals, exposed to the atmosphere, has been occurring for geological time. For centuries, man has been aware of the acid drainage originating from coal workings, copper mines and waste dumps. With the advent of the technical sciences, the processes involved in acid mine drainage production were considered to be solely chemical in nature. However, in 1947, it was shown (1) that a specific microorganism, called Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was responsible for acid mine drainage from coal workings. It was demonstrated that under suitable conditions - this bacterium oxidized pyrite and marcosite in the coal to ferric sulfate and sulfuric acid. Numerous studies have subsequently demonstrated that - under suitable conditions - Thiobacillus ferrooxidans can attack most sulfide minerals, producing weak sulfuric acid, oxidizing ferrous to ferric iron and solubilizing other metals present (notably copper and zinc) as their sulfate salts."

Material scheduling, sequencing planning and execution are the core tactical mine plan for achieving production targets that maximize the objective function of any mine production entity. This objective function is constrained by several exogenous and endogenous constraints including geological, operating, technological, marketing, financial, political, social and local field constraints. Linear and dynamic programming techniques have been used to formulate algorithms to solve the problems associated with scheduling and sequencing operations. These algorithms possess the mathematical rigor for dealing with the fundamental problems but they fail to provide adequate answers to random and dynamic process problems. Materials scheduling and sequencing are carried out within the bounds of random and dynamic fields. The functional relations between the output and dependent variables are random, and thus, current algorithms are limited in their abilities to address the problems arising from these random field processes. In this study a production simulator is developed to capture the random field process associated with materials scheduling and sequencing in an open pit environment. The algorithm incorporates a geometric pit evolution model, using solid geometry of an ellipsoidal frustum to capture material displacement dynamics. Taylor series expansion about the dimensions of the initial frustum is used to provide numerical solutions to the resulting partial differential equations governing the pushback dynamics. A production simulator, derived from the stochastic and dynamic models, is developed, validated and used to simulate the changes in the pit volume resulting from periodic incremental pushbacks and the random field process. The hybrid stochastic-optimization algorithm provides a powerful tool for addressing the random field and dynamic process problems. Combined with a hybrid stochastic-optimization dispatch system, tactical production planning and execution will be efficient and economic for achieving desired.

This paper discusses the author?s work identifying international law norms of consultation with indigenous communities and poses a potentially counterintuitive argument that corporate stakeholders? interactions with indigenous communities may have effects on the content of those norms. The claim is counterintuitive because the international law of pertinence is customary international law, which arises from consistent state practice and opinio juris (a belief by states that they are acting in a way they are legally bound to do so). Customary international law traditionally has no reference to corporate conduct per se. The paper first surveys several sources on developing international law on consultation obligations. Then it references the impact these norms can have on corporate stakeholders in industries like mining. Then, it poses an argument as to an economic ratcheting effect that can occur through various agreements between corporate stakeholders and indigenous communities that then feeds through into international law via several mechanisms. The consequences for mining companies are diverse and include the possibility that conduct by one company can have longer-term implications for the obligations of other companies and, indeed, of states. The effects will differ in the context of different competitive environments and may actually have effects on the economics of different competitive models.

"IntroductionThe Ancient Egyptians recovered gold from the mud in the bottom of ponds by having teams of maidens sit around the pond dipping goose feathers dipped in grease into the mud. The gold would preferentially stick to the oily surface and was periodically washed off to give a gold concentrate. This was a forerunner of today's flotation processes.In Greek mythology Jason and the Argonauts pursued the Golden Fleece, which was a primitive form of gravity concentrate produced when gold ore slurry was passed over a sheeps fleece. The heavy gold settled and was caught in the fleece, producing a rich concentrate that allowed Jason & Company to perform the first recorded case of highgrading. The process was a forerunner of todays shuiceboxes used in placer mining.From these simple beginnings, gold metallurgy has progressed to a state where very complex flowsheets are proposed, sometimes to perform a simple metallurgical task. Figure (i) shows a hypothetical flowsheet to identify the range of unit processes that might be brought to bear on a refractory ore. "The Strathcona Concentrator is one of three concentrators presently operated in the Sudbury District by the Nickel Division of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Production commenced in 1968 at a milling rate of 6,300 tons per operating day. Milling capacity was increased in 1970 to 7,200 tons per operating day. 7he ore contains iron, nickel and copper primarily in the form of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, while the common gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc and chlorite. The primary function of the concentrators is not only to liberate sulphides from silicate gangue minerals but also to separate pyrrhotite from the more valuable minerals pentlandite and chalcopyrite.SummaryExcessive wear on steel liners and blinding of grates in a regrind pebble mill of the Hardy Concentrator was corrected by the use of rubber liners and grates. The success of these resulted in their installation as original linings In all grinding units except the rod mills at the Strathcona Concentrator. The operation of rubber liners and grates when sized mine ore was used as the grinding medium was satisfactory confirming the Hardy Concentrator experience. Problems developed when the grinding medium was changed from sized mine ore to steel balls in that blinding of the grates occurred. This resulted in conversion of the units to overflow type mills through removal of the grates. The lifter bar life was significantly increased by using higher lifter bars.Grinding PracticeOperation of a regrind pebble mill commenced in 1961 in the Hardy Concentrator. This operation demonstrated the economic feasibility of using sized mine ore as grinding medium. Problems caused by excessive wear of metal liners and grates combined with blinding of the grates were corrected in 1964 through installation of rubber liners and grates."

The Doyon Mine?s Zone 1 (Altered Zone), found along the southern boundary of the mine, encompasses approximately 20% of the mining reserves. The mineralisation is found in a series of steeply dipping narrow veinlets, which are contained in an extremely weak host rock: a sericitic schist with RQD values ranging from 0 to 20. Longhole mining methods are used, with either longitudinal or transverse approaches, depending on the width of the ore zone. Dilution is of critical importance in the mining of this zone, particularly in longitudinal stopes, where dilution levels have averaged 55% since 2000. Major factors influencing dilution in this zone include the stope geometry and standup time. A two-phase approach has been developed to mine and backfill longitudinal stopes: the top of the stope is pastefilled after approximately half of the broken ore has been extracted; the remainder of the ore is extracted once the plug has cured; and the remaining void is filled. This method has been used in six stopes to date, resulting in an average dilution of 17%. This paper details the application of this technique and its effect on dilution.

"The need for energy conservation has been of increasing concern since the early 1970's, when the cost of petroleum based energy began to escalate rapidly and security of supply became uncertain. The cost of energy from alternative sources has also increased due to development costs and environmental restrictions.These developments have had a serious impact on the mining industry, which is energy intensive. The impact is magnified as lower grade ores are treated, and more energy is consumed per unit of product. In many cases increased operating cost is not compensated by the rise in product selling price.The magnitude of energy consumption in the mining industry is indicated by recent studies conducted in the U.S.A. and Canada. The Freeport McMoRan El Paso Refinery uses co-generation to produce some of its electricity and all of its steam. This paper will cover the operation of the co-generation plant natural gas turbine at a fixed RPM for blade longevity and energy output. The by-product heat from the turbine passes through boilers with additional heat from a duct burner to produce steam for the Tank House and auxiliary operations. The steam demand varies dramatically throughout the day based on unloading activities in the Tank House. The use of an automated steam control system within the El Paso Refinery will help stabilize line pressure by incrementally controlling steam consumption based on electrolyte temperature. This will minimize steam line pressure fluctuations. INTRODUCTION In the mid 1920’s the Nichols Copper Company of Laurel Hill, New York recognized the need for a modern copper refining facility in the southwest. Due to the many railroad heads, affordable power and abundant labor supply, and the close proximity to regional copper smelters in Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico, El Paso became the logical location. In December 1928, ground was broken for the joint venture refinery between the Nichols Copper Company, Phelps Dodge, and the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company. In September 1930, Nichols Copper Company became a part of Phelps Dodge Corporation after a stock exchange. In July 1938, Nichols Division officially became Phelps Dodge Refining Corporation. In March 2007, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold acquired Phelps Dodge. Energy costs (electrical and thermal) are critically important in the viability of modern copper electrorefineries. The El Paso Refinery produces electricity and steam through its cogeneration system. The El Paso cogeneration facility is a natural gas, 15-megawatt facility containing five turbine generators and associated waste heat recovery boilers. The facility is divided into two phases. Phase I consists of two Allison 2.2-megawatt turbine generators. Phase II consists of three Solar Taurus 3.5-megawatt turbine generators. Presently three units in Phase II are operated. The Phase I units were purchased and installed in 1986 and the Phase II units in 1992 (Solar 1991). The facility operated at full capacity until 2003 when steam demand was significantly reduced due to decrease in cathode production and closure of the copper sulfate and precious metal operations. Phase I units were taken out of service and put on care and maintenance status.

"Syncrude Canada operates the largest oil sands crude oil production facility in the world and produces over 13% of Canada’s total oil requirements. To achieve this, Syncrude mines the oil sands in open pits, extracts the raw oil known as bitumen from the sand using water-based processes and upgrades it into sweet light crude oil by fluid coking, hydroprocessing, hydrotreating and reblending. The final product, Syncrude Sweet Blend (SSB), is sent by pipeline to three Edmonton area refineries and then to pipeline terminals which ship the SSB to refineries in Canada and the United States.As parts of the Mildred Lake base mine reached their economic life, they were replaced with new facilities at the Aurora Satellite mine. Aurora is situated on Oilsand Leases 10, 12 and 34, 35 km northeast of the Mildred Lake facility (Fig. 1).In 2000, the first hydrotransport low-energy extraction production train started up at Aurora. A second production train is scheduled for start-up in 2003. Open pit mining at Aurora occurs using two hydraulic shovels, two cable shovels, and trucks ranging from 320-ton to 380-ton payload capacities (Fig. 2).Once the oil sands is excavated, the trucks dump the ore into a crusher designed to break up the big lumps of oil sands and rock at peak rates of 11 000 t/hr. The ore is then transferred by conveyor to a surge pile and then to a mixing box which combines the oil sands with hot water. Following bitumen separation in the primary separation vessel, froth is delivered to Mildred Lake for processing via the intersite pipeline (Fig. 3).The goal of this paper is to illustrate how high precision shovel GPS (HPGPS) is being used at the Aurora mine to aid in mine planning. This can be accomplished by first describing the function of the mine planning department, describing the Aurora orebody, and finally explaining how the HPGPS system functions and how it is employed at Aurora.The short range mine planning department ensures a steady supply of ore is delivered to the plant at the desired grade in a sequenced and economical manner. This is done by creating a mine plan that consists of shovel dig locations that require the shovels to mine in a specified area at a specified elevation."

The North American mining industry faces challenging emissions regulations in coming years with the introduction of new standards for off-road diesel engines. In order to remain competitive, industry stakeholders must invest in new technologies that are economically and environmentally sustainable. Westport Innovations Inc., of Vancouver B.C. has developed high pressure direct injection (HPDI) technology that allows diesel engines to run primarily on natural gas with no intrusive engine modifications, reduced emissions of NOx, PM, and CO2, with no loss in performance. This is accomplished through late-cycle high-pressure injection of natural gas directly into a diesel engine combustion chamber. The natural gas is injected at the end of the compression stroke. A small amount of diesel fuel is injected first to initiate combustion, followed by the main natural gas fuel injection. The diesel cycle and its operating characteristics are fully retained including high combustion efficiency, low speed torque, high-power output, no engine knock and fast response to load changes. Natural gas has not been an attractive fuel alternative in mining operations due to reduced performance associated with spark ignition engines and the added weight and space required for compressed natural gas tanks. However, liquefied natural gas (LNG) can be stored in a similar manner and volume to diesel fuel by virtue of its increased energy density over compressed natural gas. Cummins, Inc. of Columbus, Indiana and Westport have formed a joint venture, Cummins Westport Inc. (CWI), under which agreement the HPDI technology is being applied to a Cummins QSK engine series for high horsepower applications such as mine haul trucking. CWI, along with Komatsu Mining Systems, ENRG Fuels, Placer Dome, and Cortez Joint Venture are performing a feasibility study for the development and demonstration of an LNGfueled HPDI QSK engine in a large mine haul truck. The goal would be to demonstrate low emissions consistent with EPA ?Blue Sky? standards, high efficiency based on HPDI technology and good economics resulting from the high fuel consumption of 2,000+ hp trucks.

"Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited is located at Joutel in North-Western Québec. The mine is about four miles north-west from the town on the left bank of the Harricana River. The present mining is 1,800 feet deep with an extensive geological development below this level.HISTORY The development of the ore body started sometimes in 1967 and then the operation ceased in 1969 and again reopened in 1973 due to higher prices of gold. During these periods of active development, a considerable metallurgical research has been done by different laboratories and research and design companies.The original capacities of the Mill differed as much as 30%. So did the concept of the ore treatment. The original design of the mill was for 200 TPD of ore with straight cyanidation. The problems with low gold extraction, high reagent consumption and poor filtration resulted in a decrease of the expected mill output to an initial 550 TPD with gold recoveries in the order of 40 to 60%.Although the studies and research work done on the ore varied, all of them had a common conclusion: a very fine grind is needed to expose gold. The mining method (sub-level blast hole mining) now provides the ore that differs from that on which the metallurgical test work was conducted and the original capacity calculations had been done.These variations in the concept consequently led to the conclusion that the size of gold is a determining factor for the process.Kilborn Engineering provided the original design with the Leslie Eng¬ineering completing the design. The metallurgical test work has been done by the Department of Energy, Mines & Resources, Lakefield Research of Canada, Kilborn Engineering and Sidam Incorporated.The new flotation section with secondary grinding has been designed and put into operation by the company in December 1975 with the results yet to be evaluated."

The technology of percussion drilling is well mastered. The lower cost of percussion drilling allows more holes to be drilled for the same budget. However significant differences are often observed between percussion and diamond drill assay data. This is due to the increased level of contamination associated with the percussion drilling process. Statistical studies on twinned drillholes show that diamond and percussion assays cannot simply be merged in a traditional kriging approach. The question then arises on how to use both types of data to produce reliable resource estimates. To take into account the lower reliability of the percussion assays, a noise characterized by a variance is added to these data. The methodology consists of two steps: 1. Cokriging of the equivalent diamond value at the percussion assay locations. 2. Block kriging using diamond assays and equivalent diamond values, calculated previously, adding to these data a noise, whose variance is the cokriging variance of step 1. This particular way of achieving kriging is called kriging with variance of measurement error. The paper illustrates this innovative methodology with an application on an iron deposit. The results of this method is compared to block kriging using only diamond assays and the gain in precision is quantified. An extension of that approach to multi-element cokriging is also presented.

"Indusmin's history dates back to 1937 when they developed the Blue Mountain Nepheline Syenite deposit at Nephton, Ontario, and began supplying material for the glass, fiberglass, paint, ceramics and rubber industries.Since then, as a subsidiary of Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Indusmin has expanded the Nephton operation, diversified into the aggregate quarries for the construction industries, with operations at Acton and Halton, Ontario, established silica plants at St. Canut, Quebec and Midland, Ontario, to supply the glass, carbide, ceramics, cleanser and concrete products industries, and the purchase of a foundry, Fahramet Limited, Orillia, Ontario, supplying steel and alloy castings to the mining, construction cement and petrochemical industries.Indusmin also has a Technical Resource Centre and Head Office facilities in Toronto.As this paper deals with Indusmin's experience with dust abatement, and although dust control is a concern at the Nephton, St. Canut and Orillia plants, we will be confining this paper to the experience gained at the Badgeley Quarry and Midland plant of the Ontario Silica Operation."

The Geotechnical Engineer is faced to view problems emerging from the task of protecting the environment and also the problems related to prevention of natural hazarders. Geo-Environmental Engineering, based on the development of geotechnical engineering, addresses the problems for the industrial world and the impact on health and welfare in relation to pollution of the ground. In the recent years, acute land pollution due to indiscriminate discharge of industrial effluents especially Organic acid based effluents has become one of the major concern due to erosion in the privatization of sustainable development under Indian Scenario. To study the effect of chemical changes on soil properties due to amino acid effluent contamination on soil and erosion behavoiur. The changes in the soil properties of effluent contaminated clay and silty soil were experimentally observed to be due to the interaction of organic and inorganic constituents of effluent on index properties of soil. The surface reactivity of soil mass is experimentally reported to be varying proportionately with respect to clay (%) in the soil. Also higher surface reactivity of clay increases the Solid Retension Time (SRT) with increase in rate of chemical transformation of organic and inorganic solids within soil. Hence soil S1 (high clay content 54.5%) showed increased SRT and soil S3 (low clay content, high silt and clay content 94.9%) showed decreased SRT and long transformation stage.

It is known that the stress state inside rock discs under Brazilian tests is neither simple compression nor tension, but a complex combination of both stress types, as well as for a beam subjected to bending, where compressive and tensile stresses are separated by the neutral axis. In this study, AE generation was obtained on pure white marbles from south Portugal that were submitted to both Brazilian and bending tests. Main questions to be answered were: (1) Does Kaiser effect exist in tests which create complex distributions of tension and compression? (2) Are there any meaningful differences in AE behavior of marble under Brazilian and bending tests?

Thickening of mine tailings is a relatively new concept for their sustainable management. Removal of water from the tailings to form a paste instead of slurry disposal decreases environmental and geotechnical concerns. As the use of these pastes is relatively new, their behaviour requires investigations such as liquefaction and seismic stability, freeze-thaw behaviour, consolidation and leachate characterization. Slurry density, ore type, particle size distribution, specific gravity and environmental conditions can all influence paste characteristics. In this paper, the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is examined. New developments in water removal, and additives (such as flocculating agents, cements, organics, fertilizers, etc) leading to low moisture content tailings are reviewed, and the potential for thickening to enable sustainable management of mine tailings is discussed with respect to storage volume requirement, use of virgin land, consolidation of the tailings, land use after decommissioning.
