This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. There are signs however, that the process of evolution of such small unsophisticated plants into larger, more efficient units has begun again. * At the time of writing (October 1984) NZ$l. 00 = US 50ó. When zinc is electrowon from concentrates or residues of high manganese content, the zinc sulphate electrolyte may contain high levels of manganese. The manganese level is usually controlled by removal of manganese at the anode as the dioxide during the zinc electrodeposition stage.By increasing the temperature of an electrolyte containing 8 gll manganese from 35°C to 90°C, decreasing the acidity from 100 gll to 30 gll, reducing the current density from 432.A.m-2 t6 286 A.m-2 and using new lead anodes containing over 0·75 per cent silver, the current efficiency for manganese dioxide removal was .increased from less than 1 per cent to over 20 per cent.At the same time the current efficiency for zinc deposition was maintained above 90 per cent by additions of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides to the cell. By utilization of these conditions in a small number of cells, the manganese level in the circuit could be economically concrolled to any desired level.With these conditions the formation of the dioxide changes from an indirect route, via Mn04-, to a direct oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn02.The incorporation of impurities such as Pb, K, NH4, Cu, Ni, or Fe makes the deposit unsatisfactory for direct use in Zn - Mn02 dry cells. The deposit structure changes from cryptomelane at low temperature to y3-Mn02 at high temperature.

On-line monitoring of low rank coal quality during input to a process has the potential to provide benefits through: ò anticipation of coal quality variations prior to utilisation; ò provision of a tool to help determine the influence of coal quality on process behaviour, and ò provide a direct measure of coal quality for pricing. Moisture and ash are the two most significant coal quality parameters for combustion. They determine the energy content which can be derived from the coal and the problems arising from the presence of ash in the process (eg ash fouling, corrosion, erosion, particulate emissions and ash disposal). Extensive pilot-scale testing and full-scale experience has shown that specific coal/ash constituents (eg Na2O/ash ratio, acid-soluble aluminium, silica, sulphur contents, etc) are also important for the behaviour of Latrobe Valley brown coal during combustion, ash formation, deposition and removal of ash in precipitators and furnace ash hoppers. This paper discusses the range of on-line analysis techniques which have been investigated and their application to low rank coal analysis. Preliminary results from a joint SECV/CSIRO project which aims to develop two separate advanced instrument systems are also presented. These systems are based on: ò microwave attenuation and phase shift - for direct determination of moisture content; and ò inelastic neutron scattering - to provide total hydrogen, carbon, chlorine and ash contents, with potential for calculation of moisture content, specific energy, sodium content and Na20/ash ratio using correlations.

To investigate the effect on coal spontaneous combustion with high geo-temperature, an experimental apparatus was developed to measure characteristic parameters of two kinds of coal samples at different temperatures: one was 40°C (G coal sample) and the other was a rising temperature from room temperature (C coal sample). Based on the relationship between CO concentration and the temperature variation, a calculation model of the apparent activation energy of coal was established. The results indicated that the oxygen consumption rate, the generation rate of CO and CO2, and heat release intensity of G coal sample were higher than C coal sample. This trend was more and more obvious as the temperature increased. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of G coal sample was lower than C coal sample, especially at low temperature stage, which demonstrated that the more the oxidation and exothermic reaction of G coal sample was enhanced, the less energy was required to break the barrier of oxidation reaction. The Tyrrhenian micro-nodules, findable at low depths (200/600 m under s l) are a reasonable reserve of manganese. They can be easily and cheaply recovered but do not contain valuable metals as in the case of oceanic nodules. In this work a hydrometallurgical process for manganese recovery from Tyrrhenian nodules is presented. The studied treatment includes the following operations: magnetic enrichment, reducing leaching, leach liquor purification and electrowinning . The study shows that the most important step in the process is the preliminary manganese enrichment. It can be done directly on the platform reducing not only the transport cost, but also the residue mud in the metallurgical plant. The leaching parameters such as status and size of nodules, temperature, composition of leaching solution and S/L ratio have been investigated. After purifying the leach liquor by iron precipitation as ammonium jarosite , the conditions to electrowin manganese have been investigated. The yields of both manganese leaching and iron precipitation together with current efficiency and specific energy consumption in the electrowinning step are given.

Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

Studies to enhance the FLSmidth forced air machine through changes in the design, showed important improvements through changes in the number of Rotor blades, stator designs, rotor air distribution and other designs features. The main outcomes from this study highlighted that increasing the number of rotor blades increased the selectivity while decreasing power requirements while stators with slots have better results in terms of recovery, flotation efficiency and selectivity than without slots.Also the rotor air distribution makes a difference in the design when comparing different distribution criteria whilst keeping all features of shape and number of blades etc constant. At the most efficient rotor air distribution design, copper recovery reached one of the highest values while keeping good selectivity. The possible explanation for that is the increase in the pump capacity indicated by the increase in the specific power.It was seen as significant that reduction in specific power for some designs tested compared with the then current standard design had an average of 30% less power consumption.As a result, FLSmidth was able to identify new designs that decreased power and improved recovery, as well as, identifying some designs that specifically improved fine and/or coarse particle recovery.CITATION:Silva, R, Caldwell, K, Bell, D, Olson, T and Vianna, S, 2013. Paiam is a new township in the high mountains of Papua New Guinea built in association with the Porgera Joint Venture mine, one of the world's largest and most remote open cut gold mines. The Paiam town project is an interesting and genuine attempt at building sustainability into a community associated with a mine. A result of a tri-party agreement between a resource developer, government and land owners, this town is a good example of appropriate utilisation of benefits, obtained from resource development, directed at achieving a sustainable environment at local and regional levels.   Mining brought technology and income to the region, although as most mine staff fly directly in and out, local landowners considered there was a limited flow of benefits within the nearby townships. An agreement with government and mine was reached that more mine personnel and their families be housed locally. In 1998, we, a firm of Landscape Architects and Heritage Consultants based in Cairns, Queensland, were engaged to assist develop the fledgling town of Paiam into a livable and sustainable town and to produce material that would convey that information to stakeholders.   The design focused on establishing a sustainable town, with livability, urban form, aesthetics and opportunities for economic, social and cultural development. Aiming to be a livable town for locals and mine staff it included a market place designed as a focus for town life, essential for social cohesion and economic opportunities.   Located at 2200 m on steep rainforest clad topography, the town development has been laid out using an appropriate urban form based on organic village layouts. Clusters of houses allow for a common public area so children's play is monitored assisting with a sense of community similar to a traditional defensible village. Aesthetical consideration helps in developing community pride whilst maximising potential for development of a tourist industry.   Opportunities for ongoing economic development were incorporated in the design and construction process. These included developing skills and trades to service the region and to provide skills, development, income opportunities and infrastructure to last beyond mine closure. Administration procedures were set in place to form the basis of good governance.   The shift from traditional subsistence lifestyle to a sustainable community with traditional attributes was the project's goal and is being achieved.

Current spontaneous combustion index parameters such as SHT, CPT/RIT and R70 self-heating rate all have deficiencies that need clarifying from a risk management perspective. In some instances they can produce a false negative evaluation and in others they can produce a false positive evaluation. These tests all use a relative rating scheme that does not provide any indication of the time it takes for a spontaneous combustion event to develop, nor do they consider the moderating influence of moisture present in the coal on self-heating rate in the low temperature oxidation region. This is viewed as a major deficiency since the true self-heating behaviour of broken coal is primarily a function of time that is governed by the interaction of the initial boundary conditions (initial ambient temperature and moisture state) with the reactivity of the coal (both intrinsic coal reactivity and accelerated self-heating from reactive pyrite if present). Dry separation of iron ore fines and other heavy minerals has previously been achieved using one of two main approaches. The first is an inclined table with an upward airflow via small holes to help form an autogenous dense medium. The second is based on fluidised beds comprising a dense medium formed by fine particles suspended in an upward flow of air. In either case, vibration can be introduced. This paper describes recent findings using a novel system referred to as the Sink-Hole Fluidiser, which utilises elements of both these two former approaches. This device consists of a conventional gas-fluidised bed of fine medium with a 1 mm aperture mesh located at the surface. This mesh contains relatively large holes that act as sink-holes. The fluidised media flows upwards through the sink-holes and then falls back into the fluidised bed via the fine apertures in the mesh. The particles being separated, which are much larger than the fine media, pass over these sink-holes, where they either sink or float. The sink-holes offer a more precise balance of forces, applied on a single particle basis, resulting in robust density separation.Experiments have been performed using 2.0–4.0 mm tracer particles of density varying from 2.4 to 4.8 relative densities (RD) separated in a 200 mm diameter Sink-Hole Fluidiser with a single 13 mm diameter centrally-located sink-hole. In this preliminary semi-batch work, it was found that the Sink-Hole Fluidiser was able to achieve sharp separations (Ep as low as 0.20). The Hellyer, Fossey, Que River and Mount Charter volcanic-hosted massive sulfide (VHMS) deposits occur within the Que-Hellyer volcanics of the Mount Read volcanics, Tasmania. These deposits occur along a 6 km strike length and are hosted by the same stratigraphic unit. We use a combination of whole-rock geochemistry, short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrometry, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses and compiled historic whole-rock geochemical data to develop district-scale vectors towards VHMS mineralisation.Strongly sericite and K-feldspar altered rocks concentrate along a linear trend from Hellyer, through Que River, to Mount Charter. Ishikawa alteration index values and whole-rock major and trace element concentrations provide exploration vectors towards mineralisation on a regional scale as significant enrichment and depletion trends. On a deposit scale, composition variations in white mica (sericite alteration), chlorite and K-feldspar are observed and reflected in whole-rock geochemical variations. Regional SWIR data from drill core support the prevalence of phengitic mica and high-Mg chlorite within footwall alteration halos and highlight the main upflow zones of hydrothermal fluids in the VHMS district. OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. An additional benefit includes better acceptance from the operators with improved consistency of the SAG mill #2 operation across shifts.The paper will also discuss further improvements envisaged in the continued optimisation of the grinding control circuit.CITATION:Savage, C, Rodriguez, R and Metzner, G, 2013. Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

Factual data about the sedimentation in the Newcastle Coal Measures are presented. Data concerning the total coal measure sequence (isopachs, sand/shale ratio, and total coal thickness variation), data about three coal seams (Borehole, Dudley, and Victoria Tunnel) and data about interseam conglomerate units are discussed.From this data conclusions are drawn about the coal measure environment. The western edge of the coal basin, the Lochinvar Dome, although a high feature, was apparently stable during coal measure time. Despite its height it apparently supplied little sediment to the basin.The northern and north-eastern edge, which was unstable, supplied most of the coarse detritus (including the conglomerates) to the basin. The conglomerates show patterns of fluvial origin but after a period of "normal" variations in pattern they become restricted to two parallel zones evidently tectonically controlled. Deposition of conglomerates is episodic and separated by periods of coal formation when deformation was apparently slight. Formation of each of the three seams considered followed a rather similar pattern- each show development of thick coal around the basin edge and poor thin coal in the "axial" region of the present synclinal structure.Evidence of ill situ formation of some areas of the seams is discussed and periodic deformation of the basin during coal measure time is postulated.The unusual character of this coal basin, in particular the very coarse units, is stressed, despite the presence of many "normal "coal basin features.

A pyrite flotation concentrate assaying 0·065 oz/ton gold was investigated to determine the mode of occurrence of the gold. Ftom cyanidation and acid leaching experiments it was concluded that O· 02-0· 03 oz/ton goldwas in solid solution in pyrite and the balance of the gold was finely dispersed as grains throughout the pyrite.Autoradiography and electron-probe examination of possible areas in briquetted concentrate did not detect any grains of gold. Neutron irradiation and gamma spectrometry confirmed on 100 mg samples the fire assays obtained on 1 assay ton samples.Oxidation to hematite and reduction to magnetite at 600°C made practically the whole of the gold extractable by cyanide. This technique could be of major significance for gold ores which contain a substantial amount of "refractory" gold.

Low-level aeromagnetic data available in digital form have been combined to produce a new 1:100 000 scale map of total force anomalies of the Coromandel region, New Zealand. The map incorporates data from 13 surveys flown between 1977 and 1990 and shows the regional magnetic pattern as well as more detailed localised anomalies. In addition to magnetic anomalies, the map also depicts data to aid interpretation, including small-scale maps of topography, geology, magnetic intensity gradient and apparent magnetisation. The primary magnetic anomalies of the Coromandel region are associated with Late Miocene and Pliocene volcanic rocks, but have been locally modified by intense hydrothermal alteration caused by geothermal activity. Epithermal gold-silver and porphyry copper deposits are associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. The map of magnetic anomalies can be used as an aid to mineral exploration and the interpretation of the processes that control the distribution of mineral deposits in the region.

To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...
