Underground coal heating is a significant hazard in some coal mines. The broad principles of how underground coal heatings occur is reasonably known, however the technique for locating the heatings in often inaccessible goaf has been proved to be difficult. Since 2002, CSIRO, with the support of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has been undertaking investigations to apply and develop innovative surface-based radon technique for locating the underground heatings in Australia. This paper presents the progress of the investigation.

Most compact bucket wheel excavators in use are in the small to medium range. Large compact bucket wheel excavators compete directly with con- ventional longer boom excavators which have operational advantages over the large compact. There are, however, situations where the large com- pact excavator is viable. In the development of these large compacts there are a number of technical features to be addressed. In addition the SECV now propose to expand the concept to a large compact bucket wheel excavator with a bridge and loading unit for their Loy Yang Open Cut.

Many types of micro-organisms inhabit iron ore deposits contributing to biogenic formation and conversion of iron oxides and associated minerals. Bacteria such as Paenibacillus polymyxa are capable of significantly altering the surface chemical behaviour of iron ore minerals such as haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Differing mineral surface affinities of bacterial cells and metabolic products such as proteins and polysaccharides can be utilised to induce their flotation or flocculation. Mineral-specific bioreagents such as proteins are generated when bacteria are grown in the presence of haematite, alumina, calcite and silica. Alumina-grown bacterial cells and proteins separated from such cells were found to be capable of separating alumina from haematite. Biodegradation of iron ore flotation collectors such as amines and oleates can be effectively utilised to achieve environmental control in iron ore processing mills.

Human ventures into space are entering a new phase in which missions formerly driven by government agencies are now being replaced by those led by commercial enterprises – in launch, satellite deployment, resupply of the International Space Station and space tourism. In the not-too-distant future, commercial opportunities will also include the mining of asteroids, comets, the Moon and Mars. This research examines the role of off-Earth mining in a growing space economy. In this investigation, the term ‘mining’ is taken to embrace minerals, ice/water and other in situ resources. As the off-Earth mining initiative could be the engine that drives the space economy, it would be useful to understand what off-Earth mining market conditions and technology requirements are needed for that economy to prosper. These specific elements are studied in the wider context of creating an economy that could ultimately support a sustainable Mars colony. The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

In order to shorten the time taken to com- plete shield tunnel excavation work, reduce labor costs and to improve safety, an automatic assembly robot system for the segments used has been developed. It was developed in the three years from 1982 until 1984. An experimental assembly system for concrete segments (outer diameter:.3.55m) has been thoroughly tested to confirm that these segments can be fed and assembled automatically (Fig. 1, 2). This report outlines the robot which will be put into practical use in the near future. The robot senses the position of already assem- bled segments by means of position sensors, controls the position and the attitude of the segment to be assembled to allow bolt hole positioning, and completes the automatic assembly of a se;nent by automatically tighten- ing bolts. The six segments which make up one ring can be automatically assembled in about 25 minutes.

The operation of cyclones and cylinders is briefly described and com- pared, and a number of recent applications in mineral, gold and coal plants discussed. The capacity of an existing pump and cyclone in a circuit can be sig- nificantly increased by retrofitting a cylinder in series to predensify the cyclone feed. The cyclone overflow product size can also be adjusted and controlled using a variable aperture valve between the cylinder and the cyclone. This predensifier-cyclone system has been used at plant scale to con- trol the pulp density of the feed to cyanidation in gold plants, to size flotation feeds before split conditioning and to deslime and classify in gravity plants. Application in a typical regrind circuit is considered. Cylinders and cyclones also have numerous applications in water management systems, e.g., degritting mine and plant waters to protect pumps, sprays and other equipment. Screen undersize and flotation con- centrate dewatering circuits are described to illustrate how suitable stream recycles can reduce water consumption, optimize fresh water use and improve efficiency.

A review has been made of the studies focusing on methods for the description of grain -size distribution after breakage and, separa- tely, of the degree of liberation of the miner- al species making up the various grain-size classes of comminution products. The purpose of the study has been to de- velop an overall model of the phenomenon which, owing to the very effect of comminution, leads to the formation of grains that are generally of mixed composition. A calculation procedure has thus been de- veloped for the liberation function taken as the assessment of the distribution of mix com- ponents in the products obtained after a commi- nution process. The aim is to identify a func- tion which may, to a certain extent, simulate the variation of the grade-recovery function of an ore in relation to its degree of comminu- tion. The numerical model thus obtained has been tested out on results obtained experimentally.

The risk and consequences of community rejection and loss of a social licence to operate is well articulated (Moffat et al 2018), however, the means for systematically managing this risk are less established. At the local scale, a mining operation is said to have a social licence to operate (SLO) when it achieves ongoing acceptance or approval from the local community and other stakeholders who can affect its profitability (Graafland, 2002). Without this social acceptance, it is very difficult for a business to operate effectively or profitably. It is well understood that social (or community) acceptance of a mine and its associated operations is a reflection of the quality of the relationship a company has with their host community (Thomson & Boutilier, 2011; Lacey & Lamont, 2014; Parsons et al., 2014; Moffat et al., 2015). Community relations are an integral part of successful mining operations and where these interactions are effective, they tend to foster mutual understanding, trust and support between a company and the host community (Kemp et al., 2006; Holley & Mitcham, 2016). Research further demonstrates that where such interactions are perceived to be procedurally fair, the increased trust created in these company-community interactions tends to lead to higher levels of acceptance of mining operations (Moffat & Zhang, 2014; Lacey et al., 2017).The challenge, however, is how to listen systematically to communities that mining and associated operations; communities that are often located across vast geographic areas and with diverse demographics. To date, traditional methods deployed to both guide and evaluate community engagement and social investment activities have been challenged to reflect the nature of the phenomenon they seek to observe, the voice of community. For example, detailed baseline surveys of community attitudes every three years by companies, as is the requirement within the policy frameworks of most large miners, provide rich insights but do not reflect the dynamic, temporal nature of the relationships that underpins their SLO. These processes typically are largely opaque to communities and distinct from the company’s engagement activities. The CSIRO Local Voices project was developed with Rio Tinto to go some way towards meeting this challenge of how to listen to the voice of community systematically. Rio Tinto Iron Ore is currently working towards finalising comprehensive Native Title land access agreements, which cover all of the current eleven mines and infrastructure owned and operated by the company in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Critically, the agreements represent a mutual commitment to a long-term relationship and address many areas of concern by promoting indigenous enterprise, well-being and regional development opportunities. Our objectives in the process are to obtain the informed consent of the traditional owners for our Pilbara expansions while providing benefits to them in a way which provides lasting and substantial improvements to health, education, housing and real jobs in the mainstream economy.   To facilitate the agreement negotiations, Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) proceeded in 2005 to research and design a specific strategy around Aboriginal relations and local community engagement in the Pilbara. Wherever we operate, Rio Tinto follows a fairly simple formula in working with communities, which is comprehensively aligned to local context.   This presentation provides an overview of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community engagement strategy in Western Australia's Pilbara region. It will also explore the establishment of regional standards on employment, business development and contracting that have been developed to ensure Indigenous people are engaged in the development of their region and are able to contribute to supporting the growth and development of mining in the area with the expectation that there is prosperity for all. Hunter Valley Operations in partnership with Orica Explosives designed a process to optimise coal extraction at depths greater than 65 m below the Hunter River in a safe and cost effective manner. The process involved a team approach to investigate the relationship between geology, mining sequence, vibration and blasting methods adopted. From this an optimum method for uncovering the coal was developed.

The latter plant is unique in being the first installation for the successful use of these gases.

The design of composite materials for wear resistant service aims at com- bining two or more materials in such a way as to achieve unique and useful properties not generally available in any single homogeneous material. Properties and applications are presented of what might be described as a new generation of wear resistant materials, namely, metallic and part- metallic composites suitable for use in the high abrasion/moderate impact environment encountered in the crushing and screening of ore. Significant cost performance benefit can result from the use of such materials and several specific case histories are discussed. Some promising new developments, utilis- inn white iron and rubber, as yet in the field testing stage, are reviewed. Further comments are offered foreshadow- ing new composite developments, as yet untried but which appear to h,uve merit.

The technology of flotation recovery of silver from the residue of a zinc plant is described. The peculiarity of this technology is a preliminary pulp conditioning in sodium chloride solution in the presence of aluminum metal under high temperature. In this process the silver is converted to the metallic phase and then floated with the usual sulphydryl collectors. A variant using a combined technology is also described, in which before flotation is performed about 50 per cent of silver is leached. The total silver recovery with the combined technology comes up to 90 - 94 per cent.

An underground mine fire will influence the ventilation equilibrium in several ways which results in a redistribution of the ventilating quantities and pressures throughout the whole mine. The ventilation carries the combustion products which constitute the greatest danger of mine fires through the mine and provides the oxygen on which the intensity of the fire depends. However, as a result of the ventilat- ion disturbances created by the fire, changes in airflow patterns can take place which are not always obvious, especially when the mine is being served by several fans. The use of com- puter simulation techniques allow for the likely effects to be tested and the different ventilation options to be evaluated as an integral part of the overall emergency/rescue planning and control procedures.

In many underground mining applications where-dry fill is used, only a token acknowl- edgement of the fill properties is given. It is the aim of this paper to induce mining engineers to consider dry fill as an engineer- ing material rather than a mass to place in unwanted voids. Dry fill is generally cheap, inert and readily available, but it can still contribute to mining performance. In particular, the choice of the dry fill becomes more critical as stope sizes increase, controlled choked draws are used or pillar recovery introduced. Selection must be initiated from an evaluation of the role of the fill in the mining operation. In most cases the fill must be chosen before quarrying begins and an investigation must be made of available sources and appropriate quarrying methods. Some of the properties of fill are described together with evaluation techniques. A com- parison of placement conditions is limited by the complexities of material flow and degrada- tion: However, field and model tests can aid interpretation in these cases. Examples are given of aspects of dry fill selection and their incorporation in mining design.

Underground mine ventilation is now com monly simulated on a digital computer. Such a programme, incorporating natural ventilation has been modified by others to account for methane emission and elevated local tempera- tures. At Wollongong University, the pro- gramme was further developed and extensive interactive graphics incorporated such that any view of the three dimensional mine could be viewed, and superimposed upon that view are areas where a nominated parameter has exceeded a particular value - generally at a nominated time after a particular event and usually a fire/explosion of one type or another. A further programme was developed such that up to 20 'times' could be examined at a particu- lar location after say, a fuel rich fire at some other place in the mine. The output from this programme includes a plot of methane 1, smoke 1, temperature, pressure and air flow versus time - a most useful graphic to observe the limits of safe attendance in a particular Airway.

Steel rolling mill product finishing pro cesses gradually become or often already are unsuited for current production and marketing conditions. Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs. The principal features of two separate case studies are reviewed, these being (a) the finishing-end of B.H.P.'s Newcastle o.2 Merchant Mill and, (b) a mixed functions finishing yard and warehouses group (known as he Merchant Mills Loading Yard) which has been perating for a number of years.
