BHP BillitonÆs (BHPB) Yandi ore deposit is a channel iron deposit (CID) in the Pilbara district of WA. The ore is predominantly a goethite-hematite pisolite and overlays a clay at the base of the deposit. Knowledge of the location of the contact prior to mining is critical to maximise ore extraction and minimise contamination from and mining of the underlying clays which contain high levels of alumina. The contact between the iron ore and the clay is highly irregular. Traditionally the contact has been delineated by closely spaced drilling û this can be expensive and since each drill hole only provides a point sample measurement, irregularities in the contact surface can be missed. In September 2001, three high resolution geophysical techniques were trialled to see if they could be used to improve the efficiency and accuracy of ore delineation. The three techniques were resistivity imaging, ground penetrating radar and electromagnetic conductivity imaging. The resistivity data showed a favourable correlation with the available ground truth data from drilling. Using this ground truth data as a calibration, an interpretation of the depth to the base of the channel iron deposit (CID) ore was constructed for the areas surveyed. A significant attribute of the method is that the position of the base of the ore is imaged continuously along the lines that are surveyed rather than at discrete points. No continuous well defined ground penetrating radar (GPR) reflections were observed from the base of the CID ore. There did appear to be some correlation between the range of echo times that reflections were observed and the drill data, however the precision to which the range of echo times could be estimated was of the order of several metres and therefore not adequate to replace current procedures. The electromagnetic data showed good correlations with the existence of shallow clays but did not discriminate between variations in CID ore depth. This technique is therefore not suitable for mapping the base of the CID ore but may still be useful as a rapid tool for mapping the position of clay bands.

The Fozichong deposit – located in the south-western segment of the giant Qinhang metallogenic belt, South China – is a large-sized lead-zinc polymetallic deposit. This deposit contains two main ore districts, termed as the Guyi ore district in the north and the Hesan ore district in the south respectively. We present an integrated data set on sulfide minerals, fluid inclusions and stable isotope (H-O-S-Pb) geochemistry to better understand the features and genesis of the Fozichong deposit.Field and paragenetic relationships indicate three mineralisation stages forming the early (Po+Sp+Gn+Ccp+Py+Di+Ep+Qtz), middle (Sp+Gn+Ccp+Py+Ep+Chl+Qtz) and late (Gn+Sp+Py+Qtz+Cal) sulfide assemblages respectively. Mineral chemistry – particularly S/Fe and Co/Ni ratios in pyrite, Zn/Fe, Zn/Mn and Zn/Cd ratios in sphalerite and Pb/Ag ratios in galena – indicates a magmatic association for the sulfide minerals.Quartz and calcite coexisting with the sulfide minerals of various stages host abundant fluid inclusions. Quartz in the early stage contains two- or three-phase CO2-H2O and liquid-rich aqueous inclusions, which have homogenisation temperatures of 162~365°C and salinities of 2.9~17.8 wt per cent NaClequiv, whereas quartz and calcite from the middle and late stages are dominated by two-phase, liquid-rich aqueous inclusions that have slightly lower homogenisation temperatures (153°C~320°C) and much lower salinities (1.0~6.0 wt per cent NaClequiv). Hydrogen isotopes (dD = -59‰~-41‰), analysed using fluid inclusion waters from quartz and calculated oxygen isotopes (d18OH2O = -5.47‰~4.00‰) for the equilibrated ore fluids, indicate that the ore-forming fluids may have been sourced from magma and mixed with groundwater in the late stages. Sulfide minerals have d34S values of 2.3‰~4.3‰, consistent with a magmatic-derived source for sulfur. Lead isotopes (206Pb/204Pb = 18.592~18.794, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.648~15.864, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.909~39.580) confirm that lead and, by inference, zinc were mainly derived from magmatic rocks, with subordinate contributions from sedimentary rocks.Various lines of evidence support that the formation of the Fozichong deposit has close genetic association with the granite porphyry intruded in the late Yanshanian period (106 Ma), and it can be classified as a magmatic hydrothermal type lead-zinc deposit. The effect of sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) on the flotation behaviour of bornite and tennantite is reported in this work. Flotation tests were performed using pure minerals of bornite and tennantite under various concentrations of sodium sulfite at pH 9. The flotation results indicated that sodium sulfite exhibited a depressing effect on the floatability of bornite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. However, tennantite remained floatable after the addition of sodium sulfite in the presence of 0.1 mM PAX. The flotation tests using mixed bornite and tennantite confirmed the flotation results of single minerals. Surface characterisation using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to explain the flotation results. A mechanism is proposed based on the XPS analysis results.

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012. ‘Grade Engineering<sub>®</sub> is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans as part of a system-view’ (Walters, 2017). Two of these technologies are directly recoverable through screening stages: Natural Deportment and Induced Deportment. The potential for taking advantage of “Natural Deportment” by size following blasting and crushing has been demonstrated for a range of ore types. Simple and low cost screening can in some cases generate a fine product with improved grade and a lower grade oversize which can be directed to leach or to waste. Where an ore body consists of many different ore types, the traditional approach of blending to metal grade will often add to complexity of treatment, which will reduce the effect of “natural deportment” by size.CITATION: Jokovic, V, Walters, P, Adair, B and Morrison, R, 2018. Gekko Systems has developed an underground pre-concentration plant (Python) to reduce mine operating costs. Many ores liberate favourably using either high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical shaft impactors (VSI). Using these comminution circuits for mineral liberation; rather than for the final recovery process and by utilising a high mass pull, high recovery process route (gravity/flotation), a narrow, low head, compact processing plant was developed that can sensibly be operated underground. The Python underground processing plant can provide a number of advantages for narrow vein mines including lower haulage costs, improved mine call factor and lower operating costs. The focus on fine crushing reduces the power requirement of the plant to approximately 8 kWh/tonne. The Python underground processing plant has been designed to be towed down the decline or lowered down a shaft, and is capable of being installed in sloping, non-linear drives for placement close to the working face. The overall benefit to mining companies of this concept has been estimated to be a saving in mining costs and a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

A ‘Variable Blend and Rates’ model is developed for SAG mills which extends upon the JKSimMet® Variable Rates Model. Similarly, a ‘Variable Blend Residence Constrained Perfect Mixing’ Ball Mill model is also introduced, also extending upon the existing JKSimMet® model. These models are used in conjunction with JKSimMet® while employing external technical programs. The technical model is then used to inform an economic model described elsewhere in Hanhiniemi and Powell (2022), which calculate operating and unit costs based on operating conditions, design, and ore characterisation. The SAG and ball mill models include constraints beyond those in the JKSimMet® models. The SAG model constraints include Size Specific Energy (SSE) verification, charge weight limit, and assessment of the impact of media to ore composition in the charge using the SAG Charge SSE Model developed in this paper. The ball mill model includes residence time, volumetric capacity, and SSE verification constraints. These models are applied to Cortez Gold Mine in the processing of two very different ore types and their blends; ‘Horse Canyon’ which is softer in coarser sizes and competent is fine sizes, and ‘Wenban’ which is competent at coarser sizes but softer in fine sizes than Horse Canyon. Horse Canyon also has a finer run-of-mine size distribution then Wenban. The application of the model at this site included undertaking five surveys at varying blends. The behaviours of the blends and individual components is then studied in the SABC circuit. A nonlinearity is observed with throughputs increasing with blending. The newly developed modelling approach captures these responses. Controlled blending based on ore competence-by-size and size distribution was implemented by the site, which then realised significant improvements in throughput without any capital cost (Ntiamoah et al, 2020). The modelling developed in this paper is then compared to existing practice, and the new method was found to provide improved fidelity and utility. A three-dimensional surface is then developed using the model describing the SAG mill throughput capacity at varying conditions (speed-filling) versus varying blend. The change in throughput as a function of only the changing charge composition is presented. The result is nonlinear, and explanations are provided to describe this behaviour.

Resource estimates are the corner stone of technical and investment decision-making. Prior to mining, resource estimation uncertainty has the greatest potential to lead to poor investment decisions, despite a significant component of resource estimation uncertainty being unknowable at this critical stage in the mining cycle. This presents a conundrum to the resource geologist in terms of risk evaluation and resource classification. Ahead of mining, there is normally considerable focus on drill hole spacing analysis to determine the ‘optimal’ drill hole spacing, taking grade and geological continuity into account; cost-benefit analyses balance improved resource definition against cost; the law of diminishing returns and the exponential cost increases acting together as spacing is reduced. Typically, a lower limit to the drill hole spacing is identified. After completing the resource drilling to an agreed spacing, resource estimation is then undertaken. At this point it is common to attempt to bracket the resource estimation uncertainty. In many cases conditional simulation is used, based on a modelled, but largely assumed, variogram model. It is also assumed that the histogram of the available drill hole sample data is representative of the in-ground mineralisation. The purpose of this paper is not to diminish the importance of drill hole spacing and simulation studies, but rather to illuminate an important aspect of estimation uncertainty that, although previously recognised, is typically overlooked – the question of how representative the available data set is in characterising the true (but unknown) distribution of mineralisation. To do this, we lift the lid on one of OceanaGold’s former operations, the mined-out Globe Progress Mine, by resurrecting a high quality, close-spaced, reverse circulation (RC) grade control data set. The Globe Progress Mine is within the West Coast Region of New Zealand, it was closed and transitioned to rehabilitation in 2016 and is now known as the Reefton Restoration Project. The exhaustive Globe Progress grade control data was used to repeatedly ‘redrill’ the deposit by extracting 35 m × 35 m spaced subsets from the original 5 m × 5 m spaced grade control data. Utilising closely spaced grade control data removed the need for assumptions regarding short range continuity, which are necessary with forward-looking analyses that are based upon broader spaced resource drilling. The extraction process used a nearest neighbourhood algorithm, repeatedly moving the origin in 5 mE, or 5 mN increments. Individual resource estimates were then completed for each of the extracted drill hole data sets (49 in total) as well as a grade control estimate based upon the exhaustive data set. Whilst the data unpinning each of the 49 estimates changed, the geological assumptions, variography, and modelling parameters remained constant. This approach was taken to isolate the impact of changing the input data. The 49 estimates were then compared against each other and the grade control estimate. The mean of all 49 sensitivity estimates was close to that of the grade control estimate in terms of contained gold, tonnes and grade. Whilst it is acknowledged that the grade control estimate itself is subject to some degree of estimation uncertainty, the close match between the average of the 49 estimates and the grade control estimate suggests that the resource estimation methodology is reasonable and appropriate. Whilst this comparison is important, the focus of this study is on the component of estimation uncertainty related to the underlying data, and this is reflected in the spread across the estimates. The spread across the 49 global estimates (highest to lowest) for this particular Mineral Resource Estimation Conference 2023 | Perth, Australia | 24–25 May 2023 142 case study was found to be significant (approximately 20 per cent in grade and metal) and that is attributable solely to the underlying data. This exercise quantifies a component of the estimation uncertainty that is inherent to all drill hole data and is distinct from the uncertainties associated with modelling methodology choices, sample and subsample quality and drill hole spacing-related interpolation uncertainty. Importantly, this uncertainty is unknowable prior to mining; we can only directly compare the resource drill hole data against grade control data after mining has taken place. For the case study, approximately 65 per cent of the estimates fell within 5 per cent of the grade control estimate for contained-gold, suggesting that for many projects the histogram of drill hole data is unlikely to differ noticeably from that of the in-ground resource. However, about 15 per cent of the estimates in this study differed by more than 7.5 per cent, suggesting that a not-insignificant proportion of estimates will be materially compromised. Whether or not the available drill hole data is representative comes down to the ‘luck of the draw’ and cannot be known at the time of resource estimation. Given the challenge of attempting to evaluate forward-looking estimation uncertainty, a component of which that can only be quantified retrospectively, what should we do as resource geologists? What are the implications for risk evaluation, resource classification and reconciliation? Furthermore, without rigorous post-mining data checks, resource geologists may conflate suboptimal modelling with the shortcomings of the underlying data. An example of this problem is discussed in the following section.

Sampling drawpoints in block cave mines has been a contentious issue for many years. Doubts have been expressed as to the validity of the process used at most mines. This paper outlines the sampling practice commonly in use, discusses the resulting issues associated with reconciliation and drawpoint closure decisions. The paper also looks to the future and highlights issues for some block cave mining operations currently planned to have in the order of one thousand active drawpoints. It is likely that these operations will require a new approach to drawpoint sampling. There are several potential technologies currently available although some appear to be better suited than others to replace the current approaches. CITATION:Ross, I T, 2012. What is the best circuit to comminute primary crusher product to make beneficiation feed? Finding the best circuit to crush and grind minerals to beneficiation sizes is a complex problem that can lead to interminable discussion. Conclusions reached can be questioned. This will continue as long as the technology of comminution continues to expand, and is a mixture of many technical and economic factors in what is not a precise science. Laboratory and pilot plant procedures now exist that can help process engineers make sound decisions on which circuits are the best for crushing and grinding the specific ore being studied. It is the aim of this paper to discuss such procedures so a better under- standing of key decision parameters is avail- able, and to update comminution testing which has seen a. period of change in which new procedures have been introduced.

The SRS-1200 concept came about following the recommendations from the Board of Inquiry into the 1994 Moura No 2 mine disaster with the aim of having a system to remove personnel from an unsafe environment underground via a shaft where no other means of escape is possible. It is a mobile rescue unit that utilises a winding system to operate a man cage. It can descend the cage up to 1200 m into a vertical shaft. This operation is managed from the winder control compartment located on the non-driver side at the rear of the vehicle.

BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla sinter machine underwent a major upgrade during mid-2009. The mixing and rolling drum (MRD) was thoroughly cleaned during the upgrade. Space factor measurements taken in October 2009 showed that the drum was operating in the cataract regime in the dry mixing section and the cascading regime in the rolling section, which is optimal for granulation. Sampling carried out during an entry into the MRD showed that both the Sauter mean diameter and the predicted bed voidage increase rapidly during wetting, and then decrease in the wet mixing section. In the rolling section, the granule properties remained constant untilthe drum discharge. Frozen particle analysis, using liquid nitrogen as the quenching agent, were carried out on material collected from the MRD discharge. The results, expressed as a Granulation Index, showed there had been a significant improvement in the granulating performance of the MRD following the upgrade. The plant studies were also complemented with laboratory scale experiments which aimed to optimise the granulation process. The effect of burnt lime on green feed permeability was quantifi ed using the laboratory scale drum at different moisture contents. A significant increase in permeability was apparent once the burnt lime dosing rates doubled from 1.1 - 2.2 per cent w/w (feed basis). The capacity of the burnt lime system at the sinter machine will be increased in order to benefi t from the expected higher permeability, permeability, which will enable the machine to sinter at deeper bed heights.

BHAS, together with the G.K. Williams Laboratory, and Ausmelt Pty. Ltd., has examined a number of possible alternatives to conventional silver cupellation in gas fired reverberatory furnaces. Of these alternatives, a Sirosmelt furnace was preferred for both technical and economic reasons. Small scale work on Sirosmelt processes was carried out at the G.K. Williams Laboratory at Melbourne University in 1985/86. Pilot scale work was carried out at the Ausmelt plant in Melbourne in July 1987. Board approval for construction of a full size plant was received in October, 1988, and construction of the plant is currently underway. The plant is expected to provide significant savings in operating costs and silver inventory. Hygiene around the furnace should also be greatly improved. An increase in cupellation rate of at least ten times is expected, compared with the conventional reverberatory furnace.

Municipal solid waste of incineration (MSWI) bottom ashes are recycled as aggregates in civil engineering. These heterogeneous materials are composed of crystalline and glassy solid phases which contain trace metals, presenting a potential risk to the environment. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) can provide quantitative chemical information, in particular the localisation of metals at trace level. Unstable glassy phases formed during incineration are present in relatively high proportions. Their analyses suggest a continuum between melilite-bearing glasses and dark glasses enriched in iron with abundant spinel aggregates. These primary glasses are enriched in zinc (~4500 ppm) but depleted in lead (~800 ppm) by comparison with the bulk chemical composition and reference materials. Heterogeneous cementing and encrusting admixtures on coarse grains are studied in a second step. SIMS imaging suggests a superposition of band zones including an intermediate layer enriched in iron oxyhydroxides and a superficial layer with calcium accumulation. A strong spatial association between lead and iron is systematically observed. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) supports these observations by demonstrating that lead co-precipitation within iron oxyhydroxides, or sorption on their surfaces, may be a main containment process in the cementing and encrusting admixtures, whereas lead speciation is globally more complex in MSWI bottom ash.

The demands of the economy require larger manufacturing facilities using greater quantit- ies of raw materials which must be mined, handl- ed, stockpiled and recovered with efficiency and dependability. All over the world, mining com- panies, steel manufacturers, power stations and process plants are not only seeking but finding methods of increasing outputs and'reducing costs in the field of materials handling. In mining bigger continuous mining machines and shovels, larger trucks and crushers are digging and processing greater quantities of differing materials which have to be handled and shipped at rates once thought to be impossible. To implement such schemes demands the blending of a lot of diverse-equipment, mining machinery, bins, feeders, reclaimers and it is here that the belt conveyor assumes a role of ever increas- ing importance. Significant developments have taken place in the seventies with respect to conveyor belt transportation; not only in the systems but also in the components which combine to make such systems work efficiently.

The lower orebody (LOB) at Chingola Divi- sion of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) accounts for approximately 30 per cent of the total copper production for the company. The uniformity of the geology of the orebody lends itself readily to a computer based ore reserve calculation and accounting system. The mining units are physically defined such that a hierarchical type of com- puter file organisation can reflect the existing physical interdependencies. In 1972, a project team consisting of one representative from each of the mine planning, operational research, and computer services departments was formed to investigate and to define the technical mining requirements of the dynamic ore reserve system (DORS). The system was finally implemented in 1975ò

Much has been written about the fact that most transformation efforts disappoint. This paper addresses factors that should be taken into consideration in planning and implementing transformation programs to ensure success.In 2009, St Barbara commenced a transformation program to address issues of chronic poor quarterly operational performance; financial pressure caused by the unreliable operational performance; and an inability to develop business plans with integrity and to reliably deliver on the plans. As a result of a number of years of disappointing operational performance, St BarbaraÆs culture was not conducive to business success.This paper uses lessons learnt during St BarbaraÆs transformation program to highlight key characteristics of change programs that can generate significant sustainable benefits. While there were many benefits from the transformation program, the most significant impacts of St BarbaraÆs program have been transformation of the companyÆs culture and capability of people as business leaders; the establishment of a business systems framework to guide the design and development of systems; and developing support functions, for example centralised procurement and supply chain, business improvement and technical services.CITATION:Campbell-Cowan, G, 2012. McArthur River Mine, in the Gulf Country of the Northern Territory, exploits one of worldÆs largest deposits of zinc, lead and silver. It was officially opened in September 1995, 40 years after its discovery in 1955. This paper describes the geological, engineering and metallurgical assessments which made up the feasibility study. It then relates how these study components compare with the first two years of operation. The challenges that had to be overcome before the McArthur River Mine became economically viable included the metallurgical problems associated with extremely fine grained ore and the development of an effective mining process.
