"The Lamego mine is an underground gold mine in the Iron Ore Quadrangle in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The mine produces 48 to 50 koz per annum, as part of the larger Cuiabá-Lamego Complex. This combined unit is AngloGold Ashanti’s largest gold producer in the Americas, contributing with 310 to 320 koz per annum.The mine started production in 2009, utilising cut-and-fill mining methods.A mining method change was trialled in 2014, introducing open stope methods. The key benefits proposed from this change are considered to be: improved safety by eliminating re-entry mining methods reduced mining costs/increased productivity from utilising bulk-mining operations.The results from the trial were encouraging, and open stoping participation expanded beyond a trial.Production from open stope areas reached 180 000 t (40 per cent of total run-of-mine; ROM) in 2015. While the change in mining method resulted in higher production rates, it also introduced a critical issue in terms of stope recovery rate.Average underbreak (unplanned loss of ore) in the larger open stopes reached 21 per cent in 2015. To manage this ore loss, a project targeting higher recovery was structured with three primary components: analyse current performance to define contributing factors (design process gaps, operating practices) investigate corrective actions apply corrective actions and maximise team engagement to ensure changes become standard practice.Within six months of commencement, a range of contributing factors had been identified, and the majority of the associated corrective actions implemented, including increased team engagement to ensure changes were not ‘once off’ actions.The outcomes show a clear reduction in underbreak (average ~12 per cent for 2016), with further improvement opportunities identified. The challenging target is now to achieve a further reduction to 10 per cent underbreak as the average for 2017. SmartTag is a radio frequency identification (RFID) based technology designed to allow tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles and finally into the concentrator. This paper presents current developments and the future direction of the SmartTagÖ ore tracking system, as well as presenting some case studies. Successful applications of the SmartTag system have encouraged development to allow the system to be used in a wider variety of plants, in particular plants with finer crushing and screening stages. This presented Metso with a number of technological challenges, including RFID tag and antenna design. By reducing the traditional RFID tag diameter from 60 mm to 20 mm the RFID tags can now successfully pass through a secondary crusher. The new smaller RFID tags (referred to as mini RFID tags) have been used in some Process Integration and Optimisation projects with very promising results. The results indicate that the miniature RFID tags have a higher survivability to blasting and through secondary crushing stages. Extending ore tracking further through the process allows more reliable linking of spatial data with time based process performance. Metso is looking at developing even smaller micro RFID tags, and is also investigating other applications for the SmartTag system, including ore tracking from the original source to the final destination (ie from the mine, through the plant and ports to the customer).

The application of photogeological techniques and analysis of more advanced remote sensor images can be a cost and time effective tool in the search for desert placer gold deposits. Examples are given of regional analysis using standard false color composit Landsat images and conventional black and white aerial photography. The examples include identification of sites to sample to evaluate the pathways of .alluvial gold migration and identification of potential sites of concentration. The results of these studies developed an increased number of target areas and exploration in proceeding with promising results. In addition to the development of additional target concepts and identification of specific target areas data useful to evaluation of mineability can also be obtained from photogeological investigation. Some indication at least can be obtained of the existence of duricrusts and salines that may hamper mining. Identification of possible sources of water is another important task in the desert environment. In addition indications of the clay content of the material to be worked is very important because of its economic impact on operational costs and overall recovery. The application of photogeology to these questions is discussed.

"Due to the increasing amount of gangues in iron ores, a beneficiation process is required more as a preliminary step for ironmaking process. However, mechanical grinding and washing of iron ore needs tremendous effort that increases operating cost. Therefore, there is a necessity of a novel approach to ironmaking which can tolerate considerable amounts of silica or alumina. In the present study, a high alumina-carbon composite pellet was examined for an ironmaking process. The effect of compositional changes in the CaO-FexOy-Al2O3-SiO2 oxide system on the reduction of carbon composite pellets was investigated in a purpose built thermo-gravimetric analyser (TGA) at 1473K (1200¦C). As a result, alumina increased the reaction rate of carbon composite pellets by increasing surface area, while silica decreased the reaction rate by lowering surface area of samples. Infrared gas analysis assisted with the reaction kinetics of carbon composite pellets through measurement of CO and CO2 in off-gases. This study will assist with establishing the new pelletising method which differs from the conventional fluxed pellets.CITATION:Park, H and Sahajwalla, V, 2013. As students progress further into a degree, the decision of vocation selection, and even more importantly û securing employment in a particular industry sector, can become quite daunting. However, with a little initiative, students can overcome these issues by not only researching what employment opportunities exist, but by applying for summer vacation employment. Undergraduate vacation employment, especially with a world-leading hydrometallurgy research organisation such as the Parker Centre, can dramatically alter a studentÆs perspective of particular industries and possibly even alter their selection of vocation pursuits upon graduating. Students can also use vacation employment to enhance their networking capabilities, technical skills and knowledge by dealing with challenging new topics such as sulfur dioxide leaching, which is also discussed in this article.

The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. The recycling of process water comes with increased electrolyte concentrations that affect water quality, which may in turn affect the flotation performance of valuable minerals (Hirajima et al, 2016). Electrolytes such as Ca2+, SO4 2- , Mg2+ and S2O3 2- have been surmised to have an impact on the action of flotation reagents such as collectors (Ikumapayi et al, 2012). Xanthate collectors are known to play a significant role in imparting hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces to enhance their flotation. The interaction between minerals and xanthates is well known to be electrochemical in nature. Such redox processes may be elucidated by electrochemical techniques. Since the mechanisms involving the interactions between electrolytes in process water with sulfide minerals and the subsequent adsorption kinetics of collectors are not well understood, this study therefore aims to provide fundamental knowledge to unpack the mechanisms involved when electrolytes interact with Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and how these interactions may affect xanthate adsorption. The interaction of sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) in the presence of electrolytes at increasing ionic strength was investigated by rest potential measurements, to explain the impact of electrolytes on the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs in the flotation process. Rest potential measurements for PdTe2 and PdS were conducted in an air saturated 0.05 M di-sodium tetraborate decahydrate solution, in the absence and presence of SIBX and electrolytes. It was found that the existence of sulfide and telluride on palladium affects the mechanisms in which electrolytes interact with Pd mineral surfaces. An increase in the ionic strength of Na2S2O3, CaCl2 and MgCl2, increased the interaction between the salts and PdS, thus decreasing the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdS. An increase in ionic strength for Na2S2O3 increased the interaction between Na2S2O3 and PdTe2 and therefore decreased the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdTe2. Other salts investigated in this study increased the rate of oxidation of PdTe2 with an increase in ionic strength thereby enhancing the interaction of SIBX and PdTe2. This study has shown that mineral type, electrolyte type and concentration all have an impact on the mechanisms that result in the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs.

The Operation of the LAROX PF-50 Pressure Filter at 'Ellatzite-Med' Flotation Plant, Bulgaria The implementation of Larox pressure belt filter, type Larox PF-50 provided within 6˜8% moisture content of the produced copper concentrate, which allowed good market realisation. The start-up of the pressure filter in 2009 reduced the electricity costs several times and had a positive impact on the technological regime of flotation. This article reveals the investigation results from the operation of the pressure filter according to different situations (density of the pulp, time for filtration, pressure of the material, pressure of the drying air, time for drying with air and other factors). The investment made in the pressure filter application is a guarantee for the successful operation of 'Ellatzite' flotation plant, Bulgaria in the coming years.

In heavy minerals separation, the titanium and iron oxide phases are separated from silicates in the coarser particle size range (80 - 150 mm) using magnetic and electrostatic separators. With the ongoing challenge of heavy mineral ore deposits getting increasingly finer in particle size, conventional separation equipment suffers from the ability to process this material at the same throughput rate as coarser particles. A variety of magnetic separation technologies were developed to perform at a much finer particle size range, down to 2 mm in the clay industries mainly to remove titaniferrous oxide particles. Complementing the developments made on the physical aspects of magnetic separation, Cytec Industries has recently developed a ‘bolt-on’ chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation (CEMS). This is to enable separation of finer particles, and weakly paramagnetic titanium phases from diamagnetic silicates that are not amenable to magnetic separation. This paper will provide an outline of the technology, illustrate its ability to process a wide variety of ores, and also discuss plant limitations. The major advantages of chemical enhancement technology to magnetic separation includes: simple dosing equipment extension to existing magnetic separation technology; ability to produce product of comparable quality with improved cost effectiveness, when compared to incumbent flotation; removal of impurity minerals over wider size range; enhanced removal of non-magnetic impurities; and improving the process robustness. Furthermore, chemical enhancement technology for magnetic separation has also emerged as a platform for removing impurities at lower levels in other mineral systems as well.

Forty years ago Dr Pierre M Gy, a metallurgist, introduced variography as applied to monitoring a process. Consequently, his followers used the variogram to elaborate meaningful process control charts, especially since 1993. The name æChronostatisticsÆ was suggested several times by Gy as a logical name for this new science. The intent was to draw a parallel between the variogram identifying the variability components affecting a process parameter as a function of time, and the variogram used in geostatistics identifying the variability components of a given mineral content as a function of space. Heterogeneity problems encountered have indeed strong similarities. However, there is a fundamental difference. The variogram used in geostatistics is often stationary within a given type of mineralisation. While investigating a dynamic process through Chronostatistics, there is no such thing as a stationary variogram. Still, the evolving variogram provides essential information about subtle, often overlooked process difficulties. Chronostatistics is especially useful for management to take advantage of existing data that are often a forgotten source of valuable information to pinpoint recurring structural problems. The superiority of Chronostatistics over conventional statistical process control approaches is that it links observations to the inherent heterogeneity of materials under investigation, therefore to the sampling theory. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in-depth way. Several case studies are presented to demonstrate the potency of this new science. For each of them, observations lead to solutions for continuous process improvement, therefore attractive economic opportunities. The philosophy is this: if a control chart shows a process is out of control, it must also suggest logical and pragmatic directions for solutions. The intent of this presentation is to vastly expand on these valuable, almost forgotten ideas.

Over the 40 years that the author has been engaged in the Australian underground coal mining industry, there has been a continuous improvement in safety performance as the sector has grown in size and productivity. The underground environment hosts many hazards with significant risk profiles that are kept in check by effective health and safety management systems that have evolved largely following major underground disasters. Observations are made on the changes observed for specific aspects of the underground coal sector, with particular reference to ventilation issues, and predications are made as to the needs of the future.CITATION:Robertson, B, 2013. PT Freeport Indonesia is completing the first underground gyratory crusher excavation at their Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine located in the mountains of Jayawijaya, District of West Papua, Indonesia. DMLZ is an underground block cave mine with an expected output of 80 000?t/d and a scheduled production start in 2015.In order to deliver crushed ore to the mill through the existing conveyor belt, the DMLZ block cave mine will construct two 1000?kW 1.6?×?2.3?m gyratory crushers with their own respective ore flow conveying systems underground. Each crusher is composed of top, middle, and bottom chambers with an ore bin. This system includes a series of high capacity conveyors approximately 5 km in length including transfer stations and support facilities.The development methodology required a combination of lateral development by jumbo drilling machines and vertical development by mechanised raise climbers (MRC) due to the complexity of the chamber design.This paper will discuss the project scope, design and development methodology, ground conditions, innovative survey controls, and the challenges faced due to the remote location.CITATION:Hernandez, E, Kusumohastuti, W and Agustian, I, 2014. "Recent underground coal mine incidents have again raised the issue of: under what circumstanceis it safe for personnel to re-enter the mine? Mine rescue guidelines make recommendations aboutthe limits in terms of the circumstances, lives at risk, no lives at risk and training exercises. Theseare based upon percentages of the upper and lower explosive limits. Many factors infl uencesett ing limits for safe re-entry. These include: the representativeness of the sampling location(s),the rapidity of gett ing an underground sample analysed and the rate of change of the atmospherebeing monitored. Value judgements based upon these parameters will then infl uence the sett ing ofa trigger point based upon per cent explosibility. This raises the question of how the percentage ofthe lower or upper explosive limit is established. It is easy to defi ne this when the sampling pointdata sit on the fresh air limit line. However - what value is used when the sample sits somewherein the body of an explosibility diagram? This paper explores the various options and illustratesvarious pitfalls and problems that are faced in making such a determination. These include howthe data are represented and the assumed knowledge of those doing the interpretation."

The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western lasiuania use, uuiusatise solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. The initial paste fill design was based on the Bad Grund and Ranunelsberg Mines paste fill systems of Preussag in Germany and comprised pumping filtered tailings paste some 1.2 kin uphill from the mill to the mine portal, where cement was to be added before being distributed underground. The system was designed following initial testwork that was undertaken on a bulk sample of ore mined from the scar surface Sill Zone. Subsequently, during the mining of the Zone 96 orehody, it was found that there were significant mineralogical variations in the composition of the ore mined. Following processing, the resultant Icach residue caused significant changes in the paste rheology and therefore the pump and flow characteristics. An alternative solution was implemented that involved the use of agitator trucks to transport the cemented paste to the portal. This required modifications to the fill preparation system and also the underground distribution system. Laboratory strength tests of the HDPF using actual gold plant leach residue showed low early strengths were attained with HDPF containing only filtered leach residue. Therefore, high binder addition rates or an increase in the fill cycle time would be required to allow the fill to gain sufficient strength. A considerable amount of potentially acid generating waste rock also requires underground disposal. By blending the waste rock with the HDPF, the strengths were improved and the required cement addition rate reduced by about one-half. The potentially acid funning waste rock is encapsulated in the highly alkaline cemented paste, minimising the potential for acid generation.

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element in the environment and is toxic to biological systems. Arsenic can exist in the environment in the following redox states, arsenite (+3), arsenate (+5), arsine (-3) and elemental (0) (Oremland and Stolz, 2003). Arsenic is released into the environment by natural and anthropogenic activities such as rock weathering and ore mining, respectively. Such activities result in the release of the soluble inorganic arsenic oxyanions, arsenite and arsenate. The redox state of arsenic in the environment is influenced by a number of factors including, redox potential, pH and microorganisms (Irgolic et al, 1977; Genc-Fuhrman, Tjell and McConchie, 2004). Recently, the ability of microorganisms to influence the cycling of arsenic in the environment has attracted much attention. Microorganisms that can oxidise arsenite and reduce arsenate have been isolated and the mechanisms of arsenic metabolism are currently being investigated. The differences between arsenic resistance and arsenic metabolism are being revealed. The role of microorganisms in the release of arsenic into the environment is of particular importance with arsenic contamination of waters causing the death of millions of people worldwide, due to the consumption of contaminated water (Vasken Aposhian et al, 2003; Islam et al, 2004).

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located 520 km NNW of Adelaide, S.A. was discovered by Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1975, and is now being developed as a joint venture between WMC (5107o) and the BP Group (4907o). The discovery of this deposit resulted from the application of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model postulated that the oxidation of basaltic rocks could release significant amounts of copper into solution and that, under favourable conditions, these solutions might pass upwards along faults, and the copper be precipitated in reduced- facies sediments higher in the sequence. The Stuart Shelf province was chosen for exploration because geological interpretation suggested the presence of suitable basal- tic source rocks at depth, and favourable host sedimentary rocks in the overlying sequence. The Olympic Dam site was selected for drill-testing because of the presence of coincident gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies suggesting the presence of basalts and/or mineralisation at depth. This site also had a favourable tectonic signature, indicating the presence of deep crustal structures which might have allowed fluid migration.

This paper addresses critical environmental, health, regulatory and scientific concerns related to gold mining activities in the specific area of Barberton, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The paper thus calls for informed decisions to be made by the authorities to safeguard both the environment and people’s health. The novelty of this study is based on its comprehensive nature of the simultaneous assessment of both cyanide and potential toxic elements (PTEs) in tailings, while taking into account their composition variability over time. By combining these aspects, it is then possible to provide a holistic understanding of the contamination risks associated with mining tailings and thus justify the need for regular monitoring and supervision to ensure compliance against regulatory limits. Additionally, this paper considered investigating the dynamic nature of tailings, which are subject to changes in their chemical composition due to exposure to weathering by various agents. In this study, the determination of weak acid dissociable (WAD) and free cyanide in tailings was performed using a validated method employing the South African Council for Mineral Technology (MINTEK) Laboratory Cynoprobe. The PTEs in tailings were determined by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results revealed that the tailings contained primarily substantial amounts of PTEs, including Fe (87 566 to 37 800 mg/L), Cu (271 to 110 mg/L), Mn (2100 to 680 mg/L), Ni (400 to 390 mg/L), Zn (180 to 68 mg/L), Cr (645 to 510 mg/L), As (450 to 128 mg/L), and Pb (up to 35 mg/L). The cyanide concentrations in tailings varied between 0.20 mg/L and 0.26 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.23 mg/L in water leaching), 0.23 mg/L to 0.28 mg/L for free CN (with a mean of 0.25 mg/L in alkali leaching), 0.24 mg/L to 0.35 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.28 mg/L in water leaching), and 0.31 mg/L to 0.39 mg/L for WAD CN (with a mean of 0.35 mg/L in alkali leaching). The measured concentration of cyanide and the PTEs was compared to the minimum permissible levels enforced by the South African Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and the Water Research Commission (WRC) regulations that govern the disposal of hazardous constituents into the environment. Additionally, it was observed that the concentrations of contaminants in the tailings exceeded the acceptable minimum limits for hazardous waste exposure, posing risks to the environment and human health.

Removal of gangue minerals from ilmenite concentrates can be accomplished by relatively low temperature roasting in controlled gas atmospheres to selectively enhance the magnetic separation characteristics of the ilmenite. At roasting temperatures below 800¦C the magnetising reactions are often not consistent with phase equilibria considerations. Metastable phases can nucleate and control the roasting products. In weathered ilmenites the phase assemblages and microstructures in the altered ilmenite grains can influence the roasting reactions. In this paper we give an overview of the phase chemistry of chemically weathered ilmenites and of metastable phases formed by low temperature roasting. We also report the results of roast experiments conducted in a neutral gas atmosphere. Major increases in magnetic properties after short roasting times at low temperatures were obtained for a range of ilmenite concentrates. For example heating a secondary ilmenite concentrate from Western Australia for 15 minutes in nitrogen at 600¦C gave an increase in the three kilogauss magnetic fraction from three to 92 wt per cent. The solid state phase changes accompanying the inert atmosphere roasts were characterised by combining elemental analyses with quantitative phase analyses of the ilmenite concentrates and their roast products. It was found that the phase reaction that is principally responsible for the increase in the magnetic properties of weathered ilmenites involves a transformation of disordered ferrous-containing pseudorutile to an ordered ilmenite-hematite solid solution containing typically ten to 35 mole per cent of the hematite component. Examples are given of the application of the inert atmosphere roast to effect separations of ilmenite from gangue minerals.

Triethylene tetramine (TETA) has been used in combination with sodium sulfite (sulfite) for pyrrhotite depression at Clarabelle Mill since 1998. This combination has been highly successful at reducing pyrrhotite levels in the bulk (Ni/Cu) concentrate. Although highly effective, the roles of TETA and sulfite are not well understood. Treating bulk samples of the circuit feeds through the miniplant enabled the effects of circuit configuration on the performance of the pyrrhotite rejection circuits at Clarabelle to be determined. Reasons for the different performance of the non-magnetic pyrrhotite rejection circuit in the miniplant were investigated and tested in the laboratory. The effect of different grinding environments in the laboratory was examined to better understand the depressing mechanisms of TETA/sulfite. Modification of the grinding chemistry improved the selectivity of pentlandite over pyrrhotite in the presence of TETA/sulfite at current plant dosages.
