Hail Creek Mine is an open cut coal operation owned by Rio Tinto. It is located 120 km south west of Mackay in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland. Opened in late 2003, the mine produces two high quality coking coal products that are used in the production of steel in various overseas markets. Hail Creek is a dragline and truck/shovel operation with a capacity to mine eight million tonnes per annum. In 2010, the production was more than seven million tonnes.Traditionally, coal seam edge loss had been minimised on site by the practice of coal edge buffering. Importing buffer material can be quite expensive as it requires a large involvement from the truck and shovel or dozer fleet. In order to minimise this expense, a program of front splitting was introduced on site. Front splitting however involves an additional blast interaction which places added pressure on mining schedules. Both these methods of coal protection demonstrated a significant benefit with coal loss being reduced by approximately seven per cent (absolute) compared to traditional cast blasting.With the application of electronic detonators at Hail Creek the new blasting practice of dynamic buffering is able to be performed on site. Dynamic buffering refers to a blasting practice where two or three separate blasts are initiated during the same blasting event (front-split, cast and at times presplit). The process involves firing a front-split and allowing it to have time to settle and buffer the coal edge prior to the cast blast initiating. This practice is only made possible with the use of electronic detonators and the effective absence of a surface burning front. Current practice at site involves the front-split being fired (occasionally at the same time as the presplit) and the main cast blast being initiated several seconds later. Dynamic buffering is now used for all cast blasts to coal at Hail Creek. Electronic detonators have allowed Hail Creek to achieve reduced coal losses by buffering the coal edge without compromising the mining schedule.

Traditional kinematic and statistical analyses of geological structure for geotechnical engineering applications, while considered industry standard practice, have some limitations and unrealistic assumptions. An improved approach involves a discrete fracture network (DFN), a numerical model that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through the rock mass. The DFN technique utilises the structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models used for visualisation and stability analyses.The early development of the DFN approach was largely associated with modelling fractured hydrocarbon reservoirs and nuclear waste isolation programs. With recent improvements to computational power it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses. For tunnelling or slope stability projects DFN modelling provides visualisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a tunnel within the Ashfield Shale unit of the Sydney Basin, Australia. The necessary input parameters and derivation of these, along with the importance of both an accurate engineering geology model and validation of the synthetic fracture network are demonstrated. Multiple realisations of the DFN were analysed to provide an indication of the number and volume of unstable blocks for the proposed tunnel geometry, enhancing support design. Maintaining your competitive edge in the growing Australian mining sector today is an arduous task. With an ever increasing demand to extract more ore, safely, complete visibility throughout the blasting cycle has become vital to any operation. To achieve this requires full two way communication with every detonator during the testing and programming cycle, as well as, inside the firing window. Concerned with an increase in the number of incidents involving mining equipment, uncovering and digging into unknown misfires on-sites across Australia, Black Star Mine made the decision to embark on the use of electronic detonators to eliminate this hazard. Diversity, equity and inclusion are often cited as ‘important priorities’ by mining companies and industry organisations in their public presentations and reports, but is the minerals industry really making strides forward? The mining industry is the least gender diverse industry in Australia (WEGA, 2023). Women make up just 22 per cent of the mining workforce and mining has a gender pay gap of 15.1 per cent (WEGA, 2024a). Only 8 per cent of the CEO roles are female and 20 per cent of boards have no female members (WEGA, 2023, 2024a). Gender diversity, equity and inclusion is a highly topical issue with the recent release of the Respect@Work report, Western Australia Parliamentary Inquiry as well as the publication of company specific workplace culture reports and the national legislative changes to implement a positive duty for organisations to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. This comes at a time of a skills and labour shortage in the minerals industry as well as declining geoscience study and participation. This is a perfect storm for our future workforce. Governments, industry associations, networks and companies are developing and supporting initiatives to make strides towards equity and inclusion, with some shining examples on both an industry and company level, but the dial is only moving slowly and, in some ways, going backwards. Every company is unique, but every company can review and support gender diversity, equity and inclusion. Actions to progress gender parity could include establishing a clear company position; ensuring that this position is cascaded throughout the company with appropriate training; reporting and reviewing gender participation as well as supporting positive workforce initiatives and a positive culture with a people-centric issues reporting process. At the industry level, there are clear gaps in the support for gender diversity and inclusion including a national voice and ‘one-stop-shop’ to support women in the industry and provide resources. Recommendations include improved co-ordination and collaboration of support for women as well as improved promotion of the suitability (and safety) of the industry for women. The new independent organisation, Women in Mining and Resources Australia (WIMARA) has the objective to address the challenges of gender diversity and inclusion as well as foster co-ordination, co-operation and collaboration between the different stakeholders and state or territory groups and amplify reach. To deliver the future workforce that the minerals industry needs, the time is now for the industry to make some giant leaps for womankind.

Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs Operations are currently mining iron ore in their South Central Pit. Prior to the commencement of mine operations, Hope Downs carried out an extensive archaeological investigation and identified an ancient rock shelter lying within the proposed mine boundaries. The site is significant to the traditional owners/custodians of the land in this part of the Pilbara, and thus the final pit design was changed to preserve the rock shelter, which now lies 30 m outside the mine boundary. In order to further preserve this ancient dwelling from blast-induced damage, blast design procedures were improved over time to minimise the vibration impact when blasting close to the shelter. Blasting and vibration monitoring commenced in May 2008 using pyrotechnic delay sequences and normal-direction firing. In October 2009 electronic delays were used to reverse-fire blasts close to the shelter in order to create a damage zone between the initiating holes and the rock shelter. A detailed statistical analysis of the vibration data shows a reduction in the higher levels of vibration for blasts fired after October 2009, which is most likely caused by the created damage zone. In May 2010, a site-specific vibration model was developed and implemented, and based on Monte Carlo waveform superposition. This model was used to give a further insight and improvement to the blast delay sequences when blasting close to the shelter. However, such models are expensive to implement and have limitations, which reduces their potential for estimating the probability of getting an excessive vibration due to a given blast design. In this regard, it is more realistic and significantly less expensive to use a recently developed probabilistic analysis based on simple charge weight scaling. This analysis shows that there was a higher probability of exceeding prescribed vibration limits at the rock shelter for blasts fired before October 2009 than there was for blasts fired after October 2009.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. As filtering technology improves and there is an increased focus on environmental impacts, the concept of managing fine coal rejects by filtering, mixing with coarse rejects and dry stacking them is being considered more seriously. In Queensland, there appears to be a desire from regulators to move away from wet rejects facilities towards dry-stacked facilities, resulting in a change in the risk profile for the facility.A coalminer has a site with many constraints, including limited area that is not planned to be undermined and nearby rivers that are prone to flooding. The design of a dry-stacked facility that meets the operational requirements and environmental compliance criteria is challenging in subtropical climatic settings, where there is a need to consider wet seasons with high-volume, sustained rainfall events. The impact of the rainfall is multifaceted, requiring careful surface water management to separate clean and contact water, adequate foundation preparation to limit seepage to groundwater, management of stack stability given a potentially high phreatic surface and the avoidance of potential flood zones. These design constraints were compounded by a limited area available for rejects storage that would not be undermined.This paper presents a summary of the conceptual design of a dry rejects facility, including consideration of regulatory and client requirements, provision for expansion while also considering progressive rehabilitation, diversion of clean water as much as practicable during operations and siting constraints. Projects must be flexible to account for the rapid development of new technologies and changing stakeholder expectations. Coupled with calls for bleeding-edge solutions, customers, shareholders, and regulators demand robust, safe products and systems-of-systems. Developing and integrating these solutions is becoming increasingly complex and maintaining the flexibility required to ‘pivot’ to effective solutions can be a serious challenge. The necessary flexibility is fundamental to the Agile ethos, and this family of methodologies therefore offers a potential solution to this challenge (Beedle et al, 2001). These have traditionally been delivered with systems engineering applied through a Waterfall methodology. Agile Systems Engineering combines both approaches and presents a means to achieve these goals without compromising flexibility, quality or safety. A robust methodology for the application of Agile Systems Engineering is required to enhance practical outcomes and reduce risk for real-world mining projects.

A fiber optic distributed sensing system allows the monitoring of parameters useful to determine the short- and long-term behaviour of the structure in response to the external actions, including, eg seismic activities as well as long-term phenomena such as seepage, tunneling, sinkholes, and other geo-structural movements. Monitoring of large retaining structures with such a system provides direct strain/deformation and temperature measurements on the broad interior area with an arrangement of several sensing cable lines, enabling early detection, localisation and sizing of subsurface damages. Measurements are provided every meter along the entire sensing cable, this is particularly important in such cases where the location of defects and damages cannot be predicted. Fiber optic distributed sensing cables are generally available for retrofit installation inside the dam structure using trenches on the downstream face or laid during construction below the geomembrane liner within the bedding sand layer. Mapping the cable route enables exact correlation between a linear coordinate on the cable length and a position in the dam. Cable installation is envisaged to be carried out during further raising of the embankment; additional cable sections are plugged to the previously installed cables and measured with the existing measurement system, requiring only an update of the mapping. The measurement system is placed remotely from the sensing area since a section of sensing cable can be used to link to the sensing area at the storage facility several kilometers away. The system is available for on-line, 24/7 real-time operational data management. Such fiber optic distributed sensing systems allow storage facilities to be monitored with long, accurate, continuous and precise data for geotechnical diagnostic purposes. This contribution will introduce the principles, benefits, and limitations of this technology.

In the context of a case study for an underground gold mine, the value generated by a schedule optimisation tool (SOT) is assessed. SOT is a software tool for underground mine planning that maximises the net present value (NPV) of a development and production schedule. A baseline study measures the NPV of a schedule generated by SOT from a sequence prepared by the site mine planners. Operational resource constraints and precedence constraints are adhered to by the schedule and NPV is evaluated with a financial model including revenues, costs and discount rate, as specified by the mine planner.The case study has several facets in addition to the baselining component. Scenarios were conducted that examined the degree of constraint on operational resources, the projected gold price and unit costs. Life-of-mine schedules subject to optimisation using SOT allowed for equitable comparisons.Haulage was identified as a dominant constraint for the mine. It was one of six operational resources that were used to constrain the optimisation of the mine schedule, with alternative levels for some of these constraints being identified so that their effects on the NPV could be studied. Alternative price projections for gold and different cost projections were identified and their effects on the optimised schedule examined. Price and cost scenarios that brought additional economic material into the schedule at various times in the mine life were considered in comparison to a scenario that assumed no additional economic material would become available.This case study illustrated that the use of a schedule optimisation tool to optimise mine schedules provides mine planners with an ability to perform a wide variety of analyses in a relatively short period of time. Such tools thereby support strategic decision-making that can add significant value to an orebody.The case study demonstrates that by fixing the set of development and production activities to be carried out before optimising the life-of-mine schedule, the mine planners can inadvertently set up a situation where the NPV would be progressively eroded in the last several years of the mine life. Contour blasting is commonly performed by employing linear charges decoupled from the boreholes. This method is common in surface and underground excavations, either for civil or mining purposes. To achieve the best results in terms of rock breakage and respect of the excavation profile, blasting theory suggests that charges should be inserted coaxial to the holes to grant uniform distribution of the explosive energy, therefore obtaining a uniform radius of damage. Nonetheless, due to readiness of operations or lack of availability of specific products on the market, non-coaxial charges are often employed in blasting practice. Non-coaxial charging methods include the employ of high-power detonating cord (40 to 100 g/m), low-power detonating cord connecting small-diameter cartridges (commonly 10 g/m detonating cord priming 1” cartridges) or string loading (a thin layer of bulk emulsion pumped with controlled flow and controlled extraction of the injecting rod). This research focuses on evaluating the effects of the first two charging methods on the quality of final walls in open pit and underground operations. Different drilling geometries and charging configurations were applied to both quarrying and tunnelling blasts. The half-cast factor, the overbreak and the underbreak were evaluated as control indicators. Rock quality designation and rock mass rating were used to classify the rock mass. The research was aimed to push contour blasts to their limits, observing for which geometry and charge configuration the blast lost its design threshold with respect to the final wall for every given rock mass. Results show the operational limits of non-coaxial charges encountered in the rock masses object of this study. In good-quality rock, smooth blasting with decoupled linear charge of 40 g/m can be extended to a spacing S = 22Øf with little or no detectable drawbacks in terms of final wall quality, in contrast with theoretical formulae for the determination of the radius of damage. On the other hand, when the rock is poor, any quality of the final wall is hardly achieved at all, in spite of any care in the details of execution of smooth blasting. This paper presents an overview of the current status of mine water management in South Africa. The regulatory framework within which mine water management operates is set out, based on the principles and policies embodied in the relevant legislation. The status of the gold and coal mining industries, with regard to water management, is presented on the basis of studies that have been undertaken to develop water and salt balances for these industries. While the data is not available to quantify the status of ARD in South Africa, the range of typical mine water quality problems faced by South African gold and coal mines is presented. The status quo, problems and challenges relating to mine water management are presented and discussed. It is shown that, while there have been major strides in the last decade, and mine water management and treatment in South Africa has moved onto the forefront of mine environmental management, important problems still persist. There is still a significant amount of improvement required, particularly in the field of prediction of water quality deterioration and the application of such predictions to the identification of management actions that can be applied to prevent or minimise mine water pollution in the shortmedium- and long-term.

Carrapateena is a new underground sublevel cave mine and was officially opened in 2020. It has a mine life of 20 years. Development began in 2016, and with the rare opportunity to start a with a blank canvas and having a long mine life, an effort was made to explore how to incorporate innovative and leading-edge technologies. The Ventilation on Demand (VoD) system was designed with the objective to optimise power consumption and ventilation delivery through the primary and secondary ventilation systems. Primary fans controlled by Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and dualwinding secondary fans with multiple setpoints control the delivery of overall quantity. Automated butterfly dampeners control the regulation of air to individual production crosscuts, and automated louvres control the exhaust quantities from the mining levels. Ultra-sonic flow sensors are installed to measure air quantity and environmental stations are installed to measure air quality. Both are designed to play a key role in control and calibration of the system. It was quickly identified that no one vendor could provide a holistic solution to meet the design requirements. A strategy was derived to use multiple vendors, harnessing the specific strengths of each. A control system has been developed to allow the Site Operations Control Centre (SOCC) to oversee and control real-time delivery of ventilation as required by operations. The first full level installation of the VoD system was completed in September 2020.

Remedial options for a waste rock dump (WRD) were considered as part of closure planning studies at an active mine in Western Australia. To minimise the impact of any seepage from the landform it was determined that placement cover system utilising the moisture ‘store-and-release’ concept was appropriate. The purpose of the cover system was to:•Reduce net infiltration of meteoric water to attenuate peak concentrations for contaminants of concern in natural receptors to levels that can be assimilated without adverse impact to the surrounding ecosystem; •Provide a growth medium for establishment of a sustainable vegetation canopy; and •Improve current quality of surface water runoff from waste storage areas.The project comprised several phases of work: materials characterisation, numerical soil-plant-atmosphere (SPA) modelling and finally cover system construction and monitoring equipment installation.CITATION:Barritt, R, 2018. Recovery of gold from gold ores has been driven by the available technology and its configuration in the process plant flow sheet.Conventional practice in test work programs has the ore being ground fine (to 106 or 75 microns) to ensure liberation ahead of leaching or flotation. This paper identifies that, in many cases, gold and gold sulfide carriers will liberate and be recovered to a concentrate at much coarser sizes.There is an exponential increase in energy consumption relative to particle size reduction. This impact becomes extreme when comparing crushing a product to 1 mm against grinding to 75?microns.The resultant reduction in energy consumption when liberating and separating at 1 mm or coarser compared to grinding to 75 microns can be in the order of 15 kWh/t or 60 per cent of energy in the comminution circuit.Recovery of free gold and gold sulfide carriers by preconcentration (using continuous gravity devices such as the InLine Pressure Jig), combined with flotation of the fine gold and gold carriers, can result in significant power savings.There are multiple locations within the flow sheet that can be targeted using this process, including recovery in the cyclone underflow of existing plants, preconcentration ahead of the plant or complete greenfield, low-energy process plants designed from first principles based on data from a Gekko developed test work regime.We will describe the process of defining mineralogy in the laboratory and the decision-making process through to actual applications in the field.Several examples will be provided, including a South African Witwatersrand gold ore, several Australian gold ores and others, indicating the benefits of this process and where it has been brought to commercial reality.CITATION:Gray, A H, Davies, M and Theletsane, G, 2014. Capricorn Copper Pty Ltd (CCPL) are operating the Capricorn Copper Mine located at Gunpowder, Queensland. As current holder of the environmental authority for the site, CCPL have obligations to rehabilitate areas of the mine that are no longer operational and have the potential to cause/contribute to environmental harm. CCPL sought a voluntary Transitional Environmental Program (TEP) to provide an agreed program of works to cap and rehabilitate the former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility. The voluntary TEP contained conditions that were required to be met, to reduce the potential for environmental harm from the facility. The former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility commenced use in the early 1970’s, and is an unlined valley in-fill structure, contemporary in design compared with other such approved structures of the era. The decommissioned Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility, now known as the Old Tailings Storage Facility (Old TSF), has been a legacy source of contamination due to the existing capping not meeting modern cover criterion, and allowing oxidisation and infiltration to the underlying acid forming tailings resulting in Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) from the facility. A cover design for the Old TSF, and other mine waste storages onsite that required clay capping, had been proposed by previous operators. Under the TEP cover design phase, it was identified that a key constraint was the lack of significant quantities of low permeability clay onsite. The lack of available clay prompted the consideration of alternate lining materials for the Old TSF, with a Bituminous Geomembrane Liner (BGM) being adopted as the preferred alternative. The BGM compared favourably with clay-based materials on seepage analysis, and led to other benefits by eliminating the need for borrowing clay off site, reducing the site’s environmental footprint, and reducing construction time. The BGM cover system on the Old TSF is being monitored with the intent to use this as a case study to confirm expected performance, enabling the cover design to potentially be adopted on the remainder of the site’s mine waste storages that require capping.

Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. ThyssenKrupp specialises in the manufacture of high-grade steel-sheet products. Its main customers include the automotive, construction, household appliance, energy and packaging industries.At its works in Duisburg, Germany, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe produces 12 Mt of crude steel annually, making Duisburg one of the world’s largest steel hubs.ThyssenKrupp have installed an online elemental analyser and limestone dosing control System on one of three Sinter strands at Duisburg in an attempt to control the sinter raw mix with better precision. Traditionally, set point changes to the raw mixture were made after sampling and laboratory analysis of the sinter product. The analyser chosen uses prompt gamma neutron activation analysis to determine the elemental content of moving material on a conveyor each minute and was supplied by Thermo Fisher Scientific. The project goal was to control the CaO/SiO2 ratio (basicity) and reduce its variability in the sinter feed.Evaluation of the system has shown that the addition of the online analyser reduces the time lag related to the former method, therefore upset conditions can be reacted more quickly by the control system, and this has resulted in a more stable sintering process. As a result, the sinter feed variability in case of the basicity has been reduced by half. While CaO/SiO2 control was the initial aim of the project, a number of other benefi ts have been realised, such as a reduction in return fi nes and a financial benefi t of 0.11 €/ton of sinter attributed to the reduction of coke breeze and limestone. ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe has identifi ed that additional information available from the analyser could be used to optimise the complete sinter process.The project was carried out with a financial grant of the research program of the ‘Research Fund for Coal and Steel’.

The Hishikari gold deposit, discovered by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, has become a giant class epithermal gold deposit with the highest grade of gold yet recorded in the world through detailed exploration and development by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. The exploration strategy involved a regional approach combining geological and gravity surveys over a 900 km2 area which had historically produced over 120 t of gold. These surveys were carried out to grasp the common geologic features of epithermal gold deposits in the survey area. A genetic model for epithermal gold deposits in the area under regional survey was also considered based on detailed research of the Kushikino epithermal gold deposit which was in operation at that time. This model was applied to the targeted areas, and important relationships between mineralization, host lithology, intensive propylitic alteration and gravity highs became apparent. The Hishikari block was selected in this way and bonanza gold was discovered during drilling. Since the development of the Hishikari mine, information useful for further exploration for the same type of deposit has been accumulated.

The structural models developed by exploration and mining geologists are most commonly concerned with the ‘main structures’ or key constituents that pertain to the associated mineralisation. To this end, it is recognised that the geological and exploration models, which are developed, are essentially ‘fit for task’ and the scale-related variances are not always realised at an early stage. In fact, in many cases anomalous intercepts along different trends and of variable apparent continuity have often been neglected as ‘back scatter’ and not important. Recognition of the importance of subordinate structures as mineralising hosts suggests that additional opportunities exist outside the primary and main structures. History shows that opportunities are often not realised where gold is hosted in orientations not parallel to the predominant trend of the schistosity, main fault or shear zone.Another reason for the importance of subordinate structures can be understood from their roles in a percolation network. Subordinate structures can access the large fluid fluxes provided by backbone elements, but, as dangling elements, they provide greater opportunities for gold precipitation mechanisms and hence may constitute essential parts of the resource. Therefore, the role, understanding and consideration of the smaller-scale and orthogonal structures should be considered during all facets of exploration, resource development, delineation and mining.
