Conneaut has a long and illustrious history as a major Great Lakes port for coal and iron ore. The first dock was built in 1892 for unloading iron ore from the Mesabi Range for shipment to the Pittsburgh steel mills via the Shenango & Lake Erie Railroad, later to become the Bessemer & Lake Erie Railroad. The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company was incorporated in 1893. The world's first Hulett automatic ore unloader was constructed at Conneaut in 1899. Steam operated, it was the model for the giant electric Huletts used today, named after its inventor, George Hulett, who was a Conneaut resident.

Iv 1897, Roberts-Austen(l)$ found an arrest in the thermal curves of alloys of 60 per cent. copper and 40 per cent. zinc. This break occurred from 450° to 470° C. Shepherd, (2) working in 1904, was unable to detect any change in the direction of the thermal curve. In 1911, Carpenter and Edwards(3) confirmed the work of Roberts-Austen and called this a eutectoid transformation of beta to alpha plus gamma. Hudson') in 1914, showed that the beta constituent could be produced synthetically at temperatures below the transformation point. He believed the change in the beta was polymorphic in nature rather than a eutectoid. The work of Matsuda(32) in 1922 demonstrated this break by thermal analysis, microscopic investigations, dilatation, electrical resistance measurements, and a thermoelectric study. He believed the transformation to be continuous from 300° to 480° C., and comparable to the A 2 transformation in iron. Later, in 1924, Andrew and Hay, with electrical resistance measurements, confirmed Matsuda's work. Imai(28) showed the transformation to be progressive and therefore a function of the temperature rather than the time. He stated that it was neither a eutectoid nor an allotropic change of phase. Atomistically expressed, it was a change, not of atomic configuration, but of atomic energy of some kind; and again it was compared to the A 2 transformation in iron. Imai believed that his analyses by X-rays led to the same conclusion. In order to study this change, at 470'C., in homogeneous 60:40 brass, Homerberg and Williams «0> and Homerberg and Shaw(41) quenched their material in iced brine to obtain the beta solid solution and reheated at various temperatures. At 200° C., a change in the microstructure and physical properties occurred. A fine-grained structure, which they termed alpha and which had the appearance of a sorbitic steel, appeared, with an increase in the tensile strength to 82,750 lb. per sq. in., and a Brinell ball hardness of 240 with 3000 kg. load. Introduction This papers describes some of the latest improvements that have been incorporated or planned by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. to reduce operating costs and improve pellet quality. The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. operates and manages mining, beneficiation, and pelletizing operations in Michigan, Canada, and western Australia. This paper deals with the grate-kiln pelletizing operations at Republic, Humboldt, Tilden, Empire, and Pioneer in Michigan, and the Adams and Sherman in Ontario, Canada. Table I characterizes each operation in regard to location, ore type, pellet capacity and date that pellets were first produced. All of the operations with the exception of Pioneer and Tilden, utilize downdraft-two-pass grate cycles of drying followed by preheating. Pioneer utilizes an all-downdraft, three-pass grate cycle which consists of three drying zones followed by the preheat zone. The Pioneer and Tilden cycles have been described previously (Lindroos and Koski, 1966; Villar and Dawe, 1975; Koski, 1977). Tilden utilizes a three-pass grate cycle with a stage of updraft drying, followed by two downdraft drying stages. Recuperation systems which supply hot gases to a drying zone from second stage cooling were designed and fur¬nished for Tilden I. Tilden II will be identical. Empire IV will also be furnished with a recuperation system. The Adams grate¬kiln system was retrofitted with a recuperation system. This paper will summarize some of the efforts that are in effect or planned for grate-kiln pelletizing systems to: (1) reduce operating and maintenance costs, (2) reduce energy requirements, (3) improve product quality, and (4) meet environmental standards.

The electric utility industry is the largest customer of the U.S. coal industry, consuming nearly 50% of present coal production. By 1980, the electric utilities are expected to burn over 500 million tpy of coal or 75% of total coal production. When coal is burned in electric utility plants, ash is produced in one of several forms. These include fly ash, bottom ash and bottom slag. At the present time, approximately 20 million tons of these ashes are produced and must be disposed of by the utilities at a cost of 50[c] to $2 per ton. In 15 years, more than double this quantity will be produced. Only a small quantity of this ash is put to any practical use. Much remains to be done about expanding uses for fly ash and bottom slag.

IT is not my purpose to burden you with many statistics. The charts herewith should be considered merely as indicating the trend. I believe' that is what is really of interest to us. It is difficult, if not impossible to forecast with any assurance future developments, because of possible new mines, competitive materials, curtailment' or increase in the use of the metal in certain markets, and many other factors that have a vital bearing on any industry. Fig. 1 shows United States smeltet output of copper, starting with 1845. It is estimated that in 1928 the smelter output of copper will be about 1,010,000 tons. Between 1895 and 1905 it increased about 200,000 tons, and between 1905 and 1915 about 240,000 tons. Between 1915 and 1925 the increase was about 140,000 tons. This is an average increase over 30 years of about 190,00Q tons per ten-year period. At the present time the indications are that this demand for increased production will continue. As to whether or not we have the supplies or facilities to maintain this increase or a greater one, remains to be seen. Provided it is possible for United States smelters to increase their production, they should be producing at the rate of about 1,210,000 tons or more per year by 1935.

A description is given of a double heat treatment of 60-40 brass. Photomicrographs are included to show the changes that take place in the microstructure on reheating the water-quenched specimens. A wide variation in the mechanical properties may be obtained by the described heat-treatment method. ON SEVERAL occasions, when 60-40 brass is first obtained in the beta condition by quenching at about 825° C. and is then reheated, the writers have noticed that recrystallization will take place in the form of twin crystals at the grain boundaries of the original beta crystals. It was, therefore, thought that interesting results would be obtained if this twinning process was studied further, especially as to the temperature at which it first occurs. The material used in the investigation was a bar of extruded muntz metal, 1/2 in. in diameter, and of the following composition: Copper, 60.21 per cent.; zinc, 39.73 per cent.; lead, trace; iron, trace; tin, nil. Specimens I in. in length were sawed from this bar and a hole was drilled into the side of each specimen until it reached the center, and the tip of a platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouple was inserted. A small Hoskins' resistance-type electric furnace was used for heating the specimens. The specimens were first heated at 840°C. for 2 hr. and then quenched in cold water, in order to get the material entirely in the beta state. In every case, in the reheating process, the furnace was brought to the desired temperature before the specimen was introduced. The time occupied in preheating was from 20 to 30 min. CREATION of atomic energy, aside from its influence on war or peace, has posed these basic questions for the world: How soon can energy from atoms be harnessed to do man's daily work? How much of this power will there be, to what degree will it supplant present fuels, and what does it imply for the future of civilization? Answers to these questions may be found in part in analysis of just what atomic energy is and how far its development has come. The answers are encouraging. One of the first questions encountered in considering the application of atomic reactions is whether such reactions can be controlled. Fortunately, this has been adequately demonstrated by the operation of the Government plutonium plants at Hanford, Wash. Here nuclear reactions are carried out on a large scale involving liberation of about a billion B.t.u. per hour. This hourly heat liberation is equivalent to that obtained from about 7100 gallons of fuel oil. It has been possible to operate these plants day in and day out with the reaction controlled at the intensity desired. There should therefore be no question that, under proper conditions, reactions involving nuclear fission can be controlled.

Although the pressure to meet the heavy demand for lead still took precedence over new metallurgical developments in the field of roasting, smelting, and refining of lead in 1948 there nevertheless has been considerable activity in the experimental development of new processes and improvements as well as plans for the modernization of many plants both here and abroad. Increasing labor and material costs have stimulated the trend to greater mechanization, revamping of flow sheets, and construction of larger units wherever possible. Although there have been many serious labor stoppages in the United States, Mexico, and Europe, labor supply has improved in most plants even if it has fallen off in efficiency.

WARTIME depletion of the reserves of iron ore in the Lake Superior region of the grade and character now being shipped down the Lakes was serious. The time has come to take stock of the resources that remain in order to plan our future program of supply for our blast furnaces and protect, as far as possible. the tremendous investment made in the Lake Superior iron mining industry. Hugh M. Roberts and William H. Crago have estimated the reserves of the Lake Superior region in the United States at two billion long tons. These reserve figures are of direct-shipping ore and those concentrates produced by methods now in commercial use or those methods that may be expected in the near future. In their estimate they have assigned 392 million long tons to the Michigan ranges (all reserves in long tons) : 112 million tons for the Gogebic. 140 million tons for the Menominee, and 140 million tons for the Marquette.

IN the last year, much information had become available as to the extent that zinc participated in the war effort. The importance of foreign zinc in this program had been indicated by Bateman (M&M April 1945) as of the order of 400,000 tons annually in zinc or contained zinc. Pehrson (M&M April 1945) reviewed the domestic ore-reserve situation with respect to most minerals and metals and showed the extent to which commercial zinc ores had become depleted in this country. This picture was further darkened by O.P.A. figures appearing in E.&M.J. July 1945 in which figures for total production during the three previous years were broken down into percentages produced under ceiling and various quota price categories. True, factors other than depleted ore reserves contributed to this picture. Among the more important of these, were shortage and high cost of labor, both skilled and unskilled, and the general difficulty and cost of maintaining adequate equipment and supplies. The cost of production in the Tri-State district was most affected.

The iron-mines of the Ilsede Hütte Co. are at a town called Peine, about 20 miles east of the city of Hanover, on the railroad to Brunswick (Braunschweig). Hanover, the capital of the province, is a military city, of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, and Brunswick, 33 miles to the westward, has half this number. The mines here described are located in a hamlet called Bülten. The Ilsede Hütte Co. operates two mines, 1.5 miles apart, in this district, Gruber Bülten Adenstadt and Gruber Lengede Bodenstadt. It also operates an iron-mine north of Hanover, known as Eiserhaven, and one in the Harz mountains, the Georg Friedrich, at Grauhof. At Bülten a coarse conglomerate, a, Figs. 1 and 2, contains nodules of limonite, cemented together by calcium phosphate. The ore contains Fe, 25 to 45; Mn, 3 to 4; P, 0.6 to 1.4; S, 0.02 to 0.09; and CaCO3, 40 per cent. Directly above the conglomerate is limestone, b, followed by a mixture of clay and sand, c. Below the conglomerate is a hard clay floor, d. The ore-body, from 10 to, 12 km. long, and from 3 to 4 km. wide, has a maximum thickness of 20 m. It clips approximately 10° S.E., and strikes N. 45° E. Diamond-drill prospecting shows that the thickness diminishes to 1 m. as the end of the deposit is approached to the northward. At this point the deposit is 250 m. below the surface. In Fig. 2, the arrow, A, indicates the general direction of the work along the face, a, which is carried forward in a straight line for its entire length. At B, a train is approaching, which has come from the bench-track, shown at G, by a circuitous route, and is dumping the overburden behind the face, in the space left by the excavated rock. AMONG the industrial motion pic¬tures released in the last year of possible interest to people in the mining industry are the following: "A New World Through Chemistry," made by the public relations department of E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., Wilmington, Del. This film, which is in sound and color, interprets in twenty minutes of narration and ingenious photography many of chemistry's newest developments. It may be borrowed either in 16-mm. size on an 800-ft. reel, or 35-mm. size on a 2000¬ft. reel, the only charge being the cost of returning the film. Douglas D. Rothacker, 729 Seventh Ave., New York City, is prepared to loan free of charge except for transportation each way several films prepared in the plants of the International Nickel Co., 16 mm. with sound. These include: "Nickel High Lights," 35 minutes; "Nickel Mining," 18 minutes; "Nickel Smelting," 18 minutes; "Nickel Refining," 9 minutes; and "Copper Refining," 6 minutes.

THE mine here described is in the Witbank district, a coal area of the Transvaal, about 100 miles north- east of Johannesburg. and is owned by the Witbank Colliery, Ltd. The plant has a capacity of 4000 tons per eight hours, and prepares five sizes of coal. The coal seam lies at a depth of about 200 ft. below the surface, and is reached by an inclined shaft sunk at an angle of 18° with the horizontal. Although the thickness of the coal seam varies from 10 to 14 ft. or more, only about a 7-ft. bench is mined. Mining is by the hord and pillar system. Bords are driven 18 ft. wide, with pillars measuring 18 ft. square. The mine is laid out into four sections, each sewed by a main haulage way from the shaft. Arc-wall machines are used for cutting the coal. but all loading is done by hand. Native labor is employed under the supervision of white miners, who do the required blasting. The workings are practically free from gas and water, and very little timber is needed.

PROBABLY nowhere in the United States or its possessions is mining development more active at present than in the Philippine Islands. Only a few years ago only one company was of any importance, the Benguet Consolidated. Now, five companies are paying dividends, five others have reached the producing stage, some seven others may produce this year, and a score or so are being actively developed. Gold production in 1933 was valued at about $8,000,000, last year at about $11,000,000, and this year an output valued at about $17,000,000 is envisaged. At the beginning of 1934 about 1750 tons of ore was being milled daily; at the end of the year, the tonnage was approximately 3400. In 1933 there were only thirteen Institute members in the Philippines; a year ago there were 27, and now there are 46. About fifteen thousand amen were employed in the mining industry last year, with mine payrolls amounting to $3,500,000. An immense amount of new machinery has been required. One difficulty has so far hindered gold-mine development to some extent-lack of adequate power. Each company therefore finds it necessary to generate its own power, and for this purpose diesel engines are generally adopted.

IN the discussion on the paper on subsidence by R. V. Norris and H. W. Montz (Teohnical Publication No. 153), H. N. Eavenson has been good enough to quote some of my views regarding the phenomena of subsidence; he has, of course, only mentioned these briefly, and as he has not represented them quite correctly, it is evident that I have failed to make them clear. Seeing that he, and apparently some of the others who took part in the discussion, appear to hold views different from my own, I think it advisable to put my opinions down as definitely and as clearly as possible, because it appears to me at least possible that some of the differences above referred to may be differences of language and definition rather than of fact. The statements I propose to submit refer to the simplest cases, namely where an area in a practically horizontal bed has been entirely worked out. My experience has been confined to beds of bituminous coal and of ironstone, but D I do not at the moment see why there should be any difference in principle between the working of a bed of anthracite and one of bituminous coal, provided that the other conditions are the same. I wish to emphasize that I am considering the conditions of complete working out of the mineral bed with the roof allowed to come down and form goaf in accordance with the general British practice; 1 am excluding, therefore, methods of hydraulic, pneumatic, and hand stowage where extraneous material is brought in to hold up the roof. I am also excluding the case of bord and pillar working where pillars of small size are deliberately left in, apparently with the idea that these will subsequently crush and let the roof down gradually. Such a method of mining has long been discontinued in this country, indeed in Europe generally, and I venture to predict that the time will come when such a recklessly wasteful method will no longer be tolerated even in the United States. THE iron and steel activities of this meeting opened on Monday morning with the steel melting session," with G. B. Waterhouse in the chair and A. L. Feild as vice-chairman. N. A. Zeigler's paper, on "Gases Extracted From Iron Carbon Alloys by Vacuum Melbing," created considerable interest and the discussion in general was most favorable. H. W. Gillett and Louis Jordan of the Bureau questioned the method of analysis for oxygen and C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., I , expressed their surprise at the large amount of oxygen with the high ,carbon alloys. Whether the gases found existed as gas in blowholes or as oxide inclusions was also a moot point. A paper by C. D. King, on "Basic Open-Hearth Yields," was an extremely interesting and valuable contribution. It was discussed by C. E.Kinney and A. L. Feild and numerous questions were asked throughout the presentation. Mr. King then presented a critical analysis of the losses together with novel methods of calculating them. A paper by C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., on "Unreduced Oxides in Pig Iron and Their Elimination in the Basic Open-Hearth Furnace," followed. The question of silicates and oxides in pig iron created much discussion, notably by Henry Hanson and W. J. MacKenzie, who gave figures on chipping cost as a function of blast-furnace practice.

(Canal Zone Meeting, November, 1910.) THE recent growth of a sentiment among cyanide-plant designers against the use of gravity-stamps for the crushing preliminary to cyanidation may be said to date from the almost simultaneous perfection of the ribbed tube-mill liner and of the tall, air-agitation tank. The first step in the resulting change of practice was the universal adoption of the tube-mill for fine-grinding and the use of coarse screening oil the battery. This was the beginning of the surrender of supremacy by the gravity-stamp ; since merely the single fact that it was a more economical machine for crushing fine had retained it in favor as compared with ball-mills, rolls, or steam-stamps. The surrender, however, is not yet complete. It is the universal practice to use rolls where a relatively small tonnage is to be crushed coarse, as, for example, when coarse concentration is included in the plan of treatment. Power, attendance, repairs, and first-cost are smaller for the rolls, under such circumstances, than for stamps; and it is becoming daily more apparent that, with no concentration to provide for, the use of rolls and tube-mills, without the complication of trommels and elevators required by concentration, is rapidly gaining favor in the eyes of the leading designers. The next step was the use of the rapid-running Chilean mill between the gravity-stamps and the tube-mill, which again narrowed the field of operation of the gravity-stamp while radically widening its screen-aperture. Such a combination of stamps and Chilean mill offers advantages when fine concentration is necessary, since the reduction in the Chilean mill call be adjusted easily and governed by varying the screen-mesh. MILLING called for four sessions and a luncheon and covered broad ranges from speculative theory to basic practice, and from coal to gold. An attractive and profitable feature was the "get-together" of "coal preparers" and "ore dressers" for mutual discussion of their common problems. The first event was the Milling Luncheon in the Engi¬neers' Club on Monday. A concentrated group of high¬grade appeared and many matters were discussed, but only two called for official action: The meeting unanimously recommended the use of the Tyler standard sieve scale as against any new scale, and also the adoption of micron designation for fine particles in place of decimals of an inch or millimeter, or theoretical mesh size. The real sessions began on Monday afternoon with a menu of Mineral Physics for the ore dresser, metallurgist, geologist, physicist, et al. Four papers by the staff of the U. S. Bureau of Mines dealt with the chemical and physical aspects of mineral structure as revealed by the first two years of research to date. A fifth paper by Dr. M. J. Buerger correlated to the foregoing the knowledge of "The Lineage Structure of Crystals" and finally a sixth paper was a progress report of further developments of the last year in explosive shattering of minerals by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.
