THE purpose of ore dressing is to separate the rough ore into one or several valuable concentrates and a discarded tailing. The first step is to crush the ore so that the resulting particles may be individually valuable or worthless. The next step generally has to be a sizing operation, because the property by which concentration is effected depends on the size of the in-dividual mineral particles as well as on their physical properties. These two effects may cancel each other if a preliminary sizing is not resorted to. Sizing is accomplished by screening or classifying. Screening depends almost solely on the dimensions of the particles; classifying depends also on the specific gravity of the particles and the viscosity of the settling medium in which the classifying operation is conducted. Classification, therefore, is to a certain extent a con-centrating operation as well as a sizing operation. Before the days of concentration by flotation, the available screens were mechanically poor. As a result classification was employed for sizing in the range. of comparatively coarse sands (table feeds). In recent years, the advent of stage-grinding to flotation size has brought about the development of good screens, which are more economical than classifiers down to about 20, -mesh. With decreasing size at which separation is to be made, screens become increasingly uneconomical, while classifiers become increasingly economical. The line of demarcation between the respective fields of screening .and classification is, therefore, fairly sharp. With the development of processes of concentrating finely comminuted ore, the need for classifiers or other sizing devices operating so as to make efficiently a split at a very fine size has become increasingly apparent. Such classifiers might be termed de-slimers, from the fact that they separate a material having a slimy ap-pearance from one having the characteristics of a sand. Sizing-tests are carried on by means of testing sieves, the finest of which have apertures of about 1/500 of an inch. The 200-mesh sieve, which has an average open-ing of 0.0029 linear inches is generally considered the limit of practical test-sizing. As a result, little is known of minus 200-mesh material and the advantages of classifying concentrator feeds within the minus 200-mesh range has been overlooked. An extension of the -present sieve scale beyond the 200-mesh screen is given in Table 1.

Since 1935 California has enjoyed a remarkable cycle of discovery, which has placed the state in a very satisfactory position in regard to oil reserves. Most ol the geophysical plays have been drilled and it is possible that new discoveries must be made by the application of careful geologic and stratigraphic studies. During 1940 only one new field was discovered, which, although not of major importance, may lead to additional discoveries. During the year, 113 wildcats were drilled. New discoveries, extensions and a reappraisal of discoveries made in 1939 will not approximate over 50,000,000 bbl., as against an estimated withdrawal during the year of 224,000,000 barrels. Demand in terms of crude for 1940 was 632,000 bbl. per day as against 626,000 bbl. per day for 1939. Demand for gasoline was the same as in 1939, but the demand lor fuel oil increased 3.8 per cent. Compared with 1939, Japanese shipments decreased from 75,786 bbl, per day to 61,000 bbl. per day, but the balance of Pacific foreign shipments increased from 59,409 bbl. per day to 61,304. Total with-drawals from storage during the year will approximate 7,000,000 bbl., almost all of which is fuel oil. Drilling activity was slightly greater than in 1939 and accounted for 890 new producing wells as against 851 for 1939 (Table 3). Production averaged 611,900 bbl. per day as compared with 614.,842 bbl. per day for 1939. The productive acreage figure of the state was increased by 4000 through discoveries and extensions. New Discoveries Los Angeles Basin District Del Vdle Field.—Northwest of Newhall, where the first oil well in California was drilled, R. E. Havenstrite completed his Lincoln No. I well, flowing 390 bbl. of 50" gravity oil together with 7000 M CU. ft. of gas. Later the well was recompleted, after cutting off the gas, for 950 bbl. of 34" gravity oil. The type of structure from which this production is coming is a plunging anticline, complicated by faulting. The Lincoln No. I well uncovered approximately 180 ft. of net sand. This field contains a gas cap and its indicated productive area approximates 500 acres. An intensive wildcat drilling campaign is expected during this coming year in the district in the vicinity of the Del Valle field. Extensions and Deeper Sand Developments Los Ange1es Basin District Athens Field.—On the northwest plunge of the Athens structure, the Thorley Oil Co. completed its No. 12-1 well, flowing 250 bbl. of 3 2" gravity oil from a depth of 8097 ft. The area in which the well is located is complicated by faulting and it is impossible at this date to determine the importance of this deep-zone discovery.

R. W. Christy (Manager of Sales, Sanitary Engineering Equipment, Link-Belt Co.) and C.D. Rubert (Barrett, Haentjens & Co.) — Messrs. King and Schepman have presented an excellent paper which outlines the general practice in the design of thickener mechanisms. Lifting devices, controls, special applications and underflow pumping arrangements have been reviewed in detail. Pumping arrangements were illustrated which eliminate the need for an expensive tunnel beneath the thickener floor. Most of those illustrated have the common feature of a relatively long underflow suction line extending from the hopper floor to the pump located on the bridge at the periphery of the tank. The authors limit these arrangements to comparatively dilute or thin slurrys. It is implied that dense and coarse concentrates, which are difficult to pump, cannot be handled unless a tunnel is constructed. Fig. 1 shows an underflow pump arrangement which negates the need for a tunnel but which permits the operator to convey a heavy dense slurry. The pump is mounted directly on the fixed hoist platform and the impeller is located at the base of the steel center column. Priming water is not needed. The column

WalSH, Chipman, King, and rant' have measured the water content (as hydrogen) of actual steel-making slags. An average water content of 290 ppm was found for basic open-hearth tapping slags and 114 ppm for acid open-hearth slags. Upon equilibration of these slags at 1550°C with a 25 pct H20-75 pct Nz atmosphere, the water content increased to about 410 and 300 ppm for the basic and acid slags, respectively. Walsh et al. concluded that an acid slag was thus relatively far removed from equilibrium, and that basic slags showed a closer approach to equilibrium, with the water vapor in the furnace atmosphere. Herasymenko2 contended that these conclusions were unjustified, as the oxygen pressure used in the equilibration experiments, ;bout 5 x X atm, was quite different from that found in the furnace. Consequently, during the experiments the slag composition would have changed due to oxidation of ferrous iron. As an extension of Walsh's work and to attempt to clarify this matter, the solubility of water in a basic open-hearth slag was measured as a function of oxygen pressure. Similar measurements were also made on synthetic silicates in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiO, system. The experimental technique has been described previously by Walsh et a1.l and Uys and King.3 Samples of the basic open-hearth finishing slag, contained in 10-cc platinum crucibles, were equilibrated at 1550°C with atmospheres of different oxygen pressure but constant water-vapor pressure, Ph~o = 0.192 atm. Calculations, as well as measurements, indicate that this figure approximates the water pressure of the combustion gases in a steam-atomized, oil-fired open hearth. Oxygen pressures in the open hearth can vary from 10"2 atm in the combustion gases to between l0-' and 10" atm in the steel bath. The former figure depends on the combustion practice and the latter on the carbon content and temperature of the bath. The oxygen pressure of the slag should lie somewhere between these extremes and is expected to be closer to that of the steel bath than that of the combustion gases. Oxygen pressures were therefore varied between 10" and 6 x l0 atm. At the lowest pressure the slag "puffed up" when quenched (indicating possible loss of water) so experiments were not conducted at lower oxygen pressures. The results are shown in Fig. 1, which includes the water content of the slag "as sampled". The results show that the water content of the slag increased appreciably on equilibration with water vapor at 0.192 atm pressure and that the water solubility apparently decreases with increased oxygen pressure. The solubilities found are comparable to those of the Li20-Ca0-Si02 system.3 Work with synthetic slags in the "Fe0"-Fe203-SiOz system was performed at 1500" C, with Ph20 = 0.192 atrn and for oxygen pressures varying between 10"2 and 10-lo atm. Samples for chemical analysis were prepared as described by Larson.4 The results are shown in Fig. 2. Some low-silica melts tested at low oxygen pressures "puffed up" when quenched and analyzed less than 100 ppm water; these results are not included in Fig. 2. The melts containing 40 mol pct silica also showed a tendency to "puff up" during the quench, when they were tested at the lowest oxygen pressure. These results indicate that, at constant silica content, the solubility of water decreases somewhat with increased oxygen pressure. The effect is, however, small considering the wide range of oxygen pressures studied. Also, at constant oxygen pressure (above about lom5 atm) the solubility increases

I PROPOSE in this paper to treat of the chimney merely as a heat engine, as one of the devices resorted to in practice for the conversion of heat into mechanical work. For the sake of simplicity and clearness in the discussion, let us consider the subject in its simplest form. Conceive a chamber, heated from without, in free communicatioH at one end with the external atmosphere, and at the other end opening into a vertical chimney. Let the. cross-section of the chamber be so great, relatively to that of the chimney, that we can neglect the actual energy of the air passing through the chamber. We will neglect, also, all passive resistances to the passage of the air. We will assume that the cross-section of the chimney is constant, and that the air in passing through it neither gains nor loses heat. The following symbols will be employed in the discussion : Po = the normal pressure of the atmosphere, which, it is assumed, is the pressure existing at the level of the chamber. Po = 10332.96 kilograms per square meter. P2 = the pressure of the external atmosphere at the top of the chimney. To = the, absolute temperature of melting ice by the centigrade scale. This is assumed to be the temperature of the external air at the level of the chamber. To = 273°. T2 =the absolute temperature of the air as it passes from the chamber to the chimney. The kinetics of acidified thiourea leaching of pyrite concentrate was investigated at temperature ranging form 20 °C to a 60 °C. The effect of various parameters on the dissolution rates are discussed. The gold extraction was found to be zero and first orders with respect to Fe (111) and thiourea concentration, respectively. The order of the reaction with respect to sulfuric acid was found to be zero. The activation energy was determined from the Arrhenius plot as 2,039 kcal mole -1 (for a freshly prepared acidic solution containing Fe (111) as the oxidant and at 800 rpm stirring speed. This relatively low activation energy value suggests that the gold extraction is controlled by a-physical phenomenon. Under optimum conditions, more than 90% of gold has been dissolved in about 30 min. and 95% in 60 min. Attempt to recover gold from thiourea solution using active carbon is also discussed.

Low Zinc Prices Close Alcoa Mine Alcoa Mining Co., announced that it will suspend operations at its Hutson mine, near Salem, Ky., because of low zinc prices, January 15. The Aluminum Co. of America subsidiary announced that the low market has made zinc mining un- profitable. About 70 men were employed at the mine, with a production of about 5000 tons of zinc annually. Alcoa said the shutdown would not affect other company operations, with most of the men at Hutson absorbed in the mining firm's fluorspar operations in the same area.

Basic Inc., has been mining magnesite and brucite for 27 years at Gabbs, Nev. This is a medium sized open-pit mine. The magnesite deposits are in north-western Nye County about 30 miles east of Luning, Nev., on the west slope of the Paradise Range, at an elevation between 5000 and 6000 ft. The magnesite and associated brucite is used to make magnesia refractories employed principally in the steel industry and magnesium oxide for various chemical uses.

The study described in this paper is first centered on the determination of the physical properties (gravimetric, magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic) o f metamorphosed iron ores of the Carol Lake-Labrador City District. Different geophysical surveys available in the Carol Lake-Wabush area were interpreted quantitatively and the dimensions, attitude, and tonnage of the ore bodies investigated were determined. A geophysical-statistical study was undertaken which permitted the determination of the grade of iron, magnetite, and, subsequently, specularite in the ore bodies. A discussion of the theory and logical progression of the study and the application of the results to actual geophysical data is presented. The conclusions, which are of real significance from the economic standpoint, may be predicted from the data obtained from geophysical surveys before any diamond drilling is undertaken. An integrated interpretation of this type is useful in planning future exploration work and selecting the most favorable geological structures. It also serves as a guide to minimize and determine tonnage drilling patterns. The general conclusion that a restricted range of residual gravity and magnetic anomalies are a key to exploration is valid. Indeed large depths to the top of deposits are absent since all the ore bodies are overturned synclinal structures with tops located close to the surface. Certain irregular geometries do occur but they are not common and the alignment of the iron ore bodies is sub parallel so that magnetic anomalies are evenly reduced in the earth's magnetic field vector.

Slurry transport of industrial minerals has proven to be practical, economical, and efficient. Industrial minerals currently being pumped for long distances include cement, clay, phosphate, sand, and various waste product from industrial mineral processing operations. This paper will touch upon the basic theory of hydraulic transport of solids and then consider the economic and engineering considerations upon which construction and operation of such a line would be based. Where possible, actual cost data will be presented.

In experiments for the production of steel the principal problem has always been the introduction into, or removal from, the iron of a definite quantity of carbon. Although the solution of this problem had engaged a more or less blindly and empirically directed effort for a long time, it was only with the development of analytical chemistry that the rôle which carbon plays in the constitution of steel was disclosed in its full significance, and that many of the problems confronting the steel-maker were thereby more clearly defined than before. For a long time, and to a certain extent even to this day, the percentage of carbon in steel has been the controlling means of deter mining its quality and hardness. In many cases the percentage of carbon alone has been relied on for judging large consignments, such as the large deliveries of wire-billets and blooms to America during the past twenty years; and though to-day the influences of the other constituents are recognized and many other considerations are taken into account, and though, moreover, some special steels, such as the Hadfield manganese steel, apparently dispense to a certain extent with the assistance of the carbon, yet fix our Bessemer, Thomas, Siemens and crucible steel the carbon still remains one of the most important constituents, and I venture to say it is indispensable. In order to produce in the Bessemer converter a steel of a certain required percentage of carbon, two methods, as is well known, present themselves. By the one the decarburization process is stopped when the desired carbon limit in the bath has been reached ; by the other the bath is completely decarburizecl, and then a calculated amount of carbon added in the form of spiegel, ferro manganese, etc. In Germany the latter method only was adopted, and it was retained when the Thomas-Gilchrist process for the production of low-Phosphorus steel from high-phosphorus iron eame into use, since from the nature of the new process complete decarburization is neces-

With the continued deep drilling of today, increasing numbers of high pressure and high temperature gas-condensate reservoirs are being discovered. Correspondingly, the ranges of properties of gas-condensate reservoir fluids are also being increased. The literature1*'." contains several excellent reviews of the property ranges in presently known condensate reservoirs. When one examines these property ranges, it becomes apparent that the need for reliable data is great if the engineer is to evaluate properly or appraise a gas-condensate reservoir. It is the purpose of this paper to present phase-behavior data that will point out some of the important variables that influence recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs produced by pressure depletion. All these variables may be resolved into two major categories: the hydroc:arbon composition of the reservoir fluid and the physical properties of the reservoir. But the variables which we will consider are those which are usually determined from well tests shortly after discovery and are, consequently, readily available to the engineer. They are as follows: (1) the producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio, (2) stock-tank liquid gravity, and (3) reservoir temperature. Laboratory depletion studies have been performed on several reservoir fluids to illustrate the effect of changes in the cronsidered variables upon ultimate recoveries. The deviation factors, Z, of a series of reservoir fluids were determined experimentally to illustrate their order of magnitude and their effect upon the calculation of in-place reserves existing at high pressurcs and temperatures. The procedures followed in conjunction with the performance of these studies and their associated calculations are illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of this paper, the depletion recoveries are expressed only in terms of pcr cent of initial stock-tank liquid, with the abandonment pressure assumed to be 500 psig. VARIATION OF RECOVERY WITH INITIAL PRODUCING SEPARATOR GAS-STOCK-TANK LIQUID RATIO The producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio has long been one of the principal criteria in assumptions and generalized correlations' used for the estimation of ultimate recovery from gas-condensate reservoirs. Fig. 2 presents a plot of the cumulative recovery of stock-tank liquid at abandonment as a function of the initial producing separator gas-stock-tank liquid ratio. The graphical illustration represents the results of 44 laboratory depletion studies performed on actual gas-condensate fluids. These data are presented not only to illustrate the general trend of ultimate recovery increase with initial producing ratio increase but to emphasize the considerable variation in possible recovery at any given producing ratio. Table 1 presents the properties of two actual reservoir fluids chosen to illustrate the approximate extremities of producing ratios for gas-condensate systems. The fluids designated as A and B exhibited initial producing ratios of 3,400 and 114,000 scf/bbl, respectively. Fig. 3 presents a graphical comparison of the cumulative stock-tank liquid recoveries, calculated from the well-stream compositions and produced volumes for each fluid during depletion. It is to be noted that Fluid A exhibited a recovery of only 16.5 per cent when produced to an assumed abandonment pressure of 500 psig while the corresponding recovery for Fluid B was calculated to be 62.2 per cent. Like some other Pt-group metals palladium shows a low but considerable solid solubility of oxygen, which was found already from oxidation studies. The oxygen solid solubility of palladium in equilibrium with gaseous oxygen has been investigated at 900 - 1300 °C in oxygen (665 mbar) and air by gassing and analyzing polycrystalline samples. The 0-concentrations range from 40 to 90 ppm and decrease with rising temperature. The isobaric solubility can be represented by the least-squares fit log c0 = 0.5 log p02- 0.32 + 920/T (c0 in wt. ppm, p02 in mbar, T in K). The thermodynamic data of the exothermic solution reaction are calculated to ?H°= -17.6 kJ?mol-1 and ?S° -76.5 J?mol ? K-1. The behaviour of palladium in an oxygen atmosphere is characterized by the simultaneous reactions of the solution of oxygen in the metal and the formation and evaporation of volatile oxides besides the pure metal evaporation.

Blasting safety is a subject that cannot be overemphasized. Two years ago, a study was published describing g a series of fatal blasting accidents which took the lives of ten metal and nonmetal miners during the period of May 1973 to August 1974.1 Each accident was described, and the direct causes were delineated. In each instance, specific MESA safety regulations were violated. Four of the victims were killed by drilling into explosives; two were killed by lingering too long in the vicinity of fuse rounds; two fatalities resulted from improper guarding of shots; one blaster did not retreat far enough to avoid the blast concussion; and another used an improper tester for checking an electric blasting cap. All of these fatalities could have been avoided by adhering to the MESA blasting regulations contained in 30 CFR Part 55 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Open-Pit Mines), Part 56 (Health and Safety Standards-Sand, Gravel and Crushed Stone Operations), and Part 57 (Health and Safety Standards-Metal and Nonmetallic Underground Mines).

CRITICAL analyses of the work expended in producing oil by the utilization of gas energy have appeared in the publications of Shaw,1 Pierce and Lewis,2 and Herold,3 authors who have ably discussed the factors which must be taken into consideration in comparing energy consumed per barrel in various wells which are flowed by means of gas-lift. However, two distinct phases of oil production are concerned with the ratio of gas energy consumed to oil produced. One of these phases is the gas-lift, which utilizes the differential gas pressures for the purpose of flowing oil, whether these pressures be natural reservoir pressures or be induced by artificial compression of gas or air. The other phase has to do with prorating oil production in pools which are operated either as units, or are subject to such restrictions as those imposed at Oklahoma City by the Corporation Commission, or, by similar controlling groups in other fields. An abundance of literature is available relative to the problems of flowing wells by gas-lift, but the first suggestion that the energy of the gas within the oil and gas pool might serve as a basis for proration, appeared in the timely article by McWilliams.4 Much of the. dissatisfaction with proration in certain fields is because some operators feel that besides the hazard to the wells which accompanies the test, the method of allocating production on the basis of the "potential" gage is inequitable and gives some operators a distinct advantage over others.5 The most severe penalty may be exacted from the most progressive operators or those who attempt to produce their oil with a minimum quantity of reservoir gas.
