The accompanying figures show a jig arranged for separating the middle product or middlings obtained in the concentration of certain ores, minerals, coal, etc. In the preparation for sizing, prior to jigging, of ore-bearing minerals, coal, etc., with their impurities, it is generally desirable to avoid reducing them to unnecessarily small sizes. Where the impurities adhere to the mineral particles or are disseminated through its mass, it is generally necessary to crush to such a fineness as will unlock the minerals from the gangue. If a considerable proportion of the material consists of mixtures of the minerals and gangue, each in large size, and a lesser proportion consists of a mixture of the two, in smaller sizes of various dimensions, it is not always desirable to reduce the whole to such size as would be required to liberate completely the pieces of ore and gangue in the finest mixtures. Anna, Ohio, at the junction of Cincinnati, Findlay and Kankakee arches, has been the site of repeated and sometimes damaging earthquakes. As part of a seismicity investigation near-surface (0.15-1 m depth) overcoring strain measurements were conducted in four limestone and dolomite quarries surrounding Anna, the results of which suggest a complicated regional stress pattern, with changes in the maximum horizontal stress direction from N45ºE to N15ºW. Since such abrupt stress fluctuations are rather atypical in the Midwest and since the reliability of near-surface tests in defining regional stress had not been established, we decided to remeasure the stresses at the same locations but at greater depths (0-200 m) using the hydrofracturing method. Owing to the weak horizontal bedding planes of the Silurian shaly limestones and shaly dolomites and the relatively shallow depths, many of the tests yielded horizontal fractures, providing information only on the vertical principal stress (-0.029 MPa/m depth). However, sufficient tests in each of three testholes resulted in vertical hydrofractures to enable the calculation of all three principal stresses. Within 50-170 m depth the horizontal stresses in all three quarries appear to belong to a uniform regional Stress field defined by the following relations: [']Hmin = 5.1 + 0.014 D; [0] Hmax = 10.1 + 0.014 D, where D is depth in meters. The direction of [O]Hmax within 50-170 m depth is uniform at N70°E (±15º). The hydro- fracturing results obtained at Anna, Ohio are in agreement with the prevailing stress regime in the midcontinent both with respect to magnitudes and directions. The results suggest a possible thrust mechanism for a proposed NW-SE fault along which most of the earthquake epicenters have been located, and a left lateral strike-slip at greater depths. The earliest reference to coal in Tennessee is that by Dr. Walker in 1750 (see p. 18) where he saw it near the present site of Middlesboro. The next reference found is in 1798 when Morse stated, "some of these mountains, particularly in the, Cumberland, or Great-Laurel Ridge, are the most stupendous piles in the United States. They abound in ginseng and coal."' There must have been many places where it was seen in that interval, but nearly as long a time elapsed before Morris, in 1834, said that "fine beds of stone-coal exist in both East and Middle Tennessee."2 In a description of the Dover Iron Works, on the left side of the Cumberland River, a few miles above Dover, in Stewart County, it was said that "80 hands were employed in digging and transporting stone coal" and that the "plant had been running at least since Oct. 2, 1834."3 While doubtless coal had been used locally, this is probably the first use of it commercially in the state. The consumption of stone coal was 4,000 tons per year. In this same geological report openings of coal are mentioned near Battle Creek, Marion County, and in Bledsoe and Rhea Counties, where it was being used locally by blacksmiths; some other places were being worked near the turnpike road from Kingston to the Crab-Orchard, the product being hauled three miles to the Tennessee River and loaded in barges; farther west in. White County several outcrops were found. In Fentress County, several pits had been opened, the coal being sent down the Obey and Cumberland Rivers, and openings were also seen in Morgan, Anderson, Roane, Warren, Hamilton and Franklin Counties. The quality of water for steam boilers is a serious question in Illinois, and has been the occasion of many investigations, undertaken either for the discovery of sources of a better supply, or for the purification of the supplies already at hand. LOCATION OF SUPPLIES. The sources of supply of which this paper treats lie along the right of way of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Company, and form a nearly straight line from Chicago, Illinois, on Lake Michigan, to Burlington, Iowa, on the Mississippi River. The supplies consist of surface-, ground- and deep well-waters ; their locations are given in Fig. 1, which is adapted from a map of Illinois published by the Illinois Railroad Commissioners. The influence of the geological formation on the water-supply of Illinois is fully treated in an article in the Seventeenth Annual Report of the U. S. THE Oaxaca coal fields, shown in Fig. 1, are located in the Alta Mixteca region in the states of Oaxaca, Puebla, and Guerrero. Known out crops are scattered over 3125 square miles. It is probable that further exploration will reveal a more extensive area of deposits. The region is of great importance to Mexico, as at present the only sources of coal are the fields near the U. S. border. Steel mills are also located in the North, and finished products must travel 600 to 800 miles to the area of consumption in central Mexico. The Oaxaca coal, only 120 miles south of Mexico, D.F., lies close to several iron ore deposits. If this coal can be used in steel production is will be possible for the Mexican steel industry to reach new dimensions, commensurate with the growing industry of the central region. Coal can be utilized in thermoelectric plants in this area, which lacks not only petroleum and natural gas but also electric power. It can be used as domestic fuel, replacing charcoal and firewood.

The use of pellets in North American blast furnaces has made the mixes used in the associated sinter plants unique. These mixes generally contain a high percentage of fine waste oxide materials as the principal iron bearing portion of the mix, with iron ores and concentrates added in minor amounts only. Additionally, the sinter basicity is always above one and can be three or higher. This paper will discuss the large body of knowledge and experience developed by one company on this type of sinter mix. Results of laboratory tests will be used to illustrate how mix composition and feed preparation affect sinter productivity and quality.

A technique for evaluating the similarity of ore deposits is presented. A Q-mode cluster analysis is performed using information on tungsten mines in North America. This is a method of grouping several samples according to their similarity based on a simple matching coefficient. Tungsten mines are grouped or clustered on the basis of geologic variables. It is possible to interpret and evaluate different ore environments according to age, mineralogy, and other variables. It is well known that variable geologic conditions influence the occurrence of certain types of minerals. If one variable is responsible and identified, that variable can be searched for in exploration. If several interrelated variables are responsible for forming a favorable environment, then recognition and identification may be more difficult or completely masked. Therefore it is helpful in exporation to isolate and identify multiple interrelated variables which control the localization of mineral deposits. Cluster analysis is useful in mineral exploration where considerable amounts of data are available for analysis. Subtle relationships that might be overlooked because the data are voluminous can be isolated using this technique. Cluster analysis can be used to establish exploration prioriy in unknown areas on the basis of similarities to known metallogenetic provinces.

Events of the mid-1970s have materially affected US coal production and transportation by railroad. Coal, as a replacement or substitute for petroleum fuels, has been hauled in significantly increased tonnages. Concurrent with the new demand, the railroad regulatory environment has undergone major changes, especially in deregulation activity. Those two events have produced considerable litigation regarding coal rates. This paper discusses the factors involved with railroad rates and topics such as revenue adequacy, Ramsey Pricing, stand-alone cost, and differential pricing. In addition, an update on the western railroad merger situation and the implications for coal transportation are presented. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the current regulatory climate and future prospects.

In an earlier day, a moderate-sized 600 tpd mine could easily require 60 working faces and might use five supervisors. The miner had a tonnage rate as an incentive and was largely his own boss. With the advent of conventional mining machine crews, the typical pattern of resource used changed radically. The number of work places could be cut by a factor of ten, but supervision only by a factor of somewhere around three, or at most, five. Obviously, supervision was increased. Capital use rose at the same time by a factor of approximately eight. Materials used, such as powder and bits, probably in- creased in both quality and unit cost, too. It certainly required a better-trained man to run the machines, but fewer miners were needed. It is clear that each input factor such as land, labor, capital and management, has changed significantly and it would be foolish to attribute all the gain to improved machines. However, concentration of work was a vital consideration in the change, sketched above, and such focusing of work in fewer areas could not have occurred without high capacity mining machines.

The Buick Mine is a joint venture of American Metals Climax, Inc. and Homestake Mining Company located 120 miles by road southwest of St. Louis, near the village of Boss, in the `New Missouri Lead Belt'. Since start-up in 1969, over four million tons of lead-zinc ore have been mined and milled at Buick. Situated 1100 ft below the surface at an elevation 270 ft above sea level, the flat lying sinuous orebodies are up to 250 ft wide, 85 ft high and several thousand feet long. Mineralization is galena, sphalerite and chalcopyrite in dolomite.

ThE prediction of the activity coefficient for a solute in a multicomponent liquid metallic solution based on measurements in the related binary systems has been the object of study for some time, particularly in iron-base alloys.1,2 Very few measurements, however, have been made on nonferrous systems; furthermore, measurements made for the specific purpose of testing various prediction equations are almost nonexistent. The measurements here described of the activity coefficient of cadmium in liquid lead alloys were directed toward this goal. One of the most direct means by which the activity coefficient can be calculated has been based on the independent influences of each solute. When solute metals i,j, k, and so forth are present, the activity coefficient, y, of one of these (i for example) may be expressed as a product of factors which represent the effects of each of the other components:

It has been shown that the resistance to corrosion of duralumin sheet is greatly influenced by the quenching medium used in heat treatment, or, more specifically, by the rate of cooling during quenching. The severity of corrosive attack after exposure to salt-water spray increases in .the following order: The tensile strength, yield point and elongation are only slightly affected by the quenching medium, as shown in Table 1. Tensile test requirements: yield stress, 25,000 lb. per sq. in. minimum; ultimate stress, 55,000 lb. per sq. in. minimum; elongation in 2 in., 18 per cent. minimum.

INTRODUCTION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is a relatively low-cost instrument developed by Hawkes and Bailey (1973) and was originally intended to monitor stress changes in mine pillars subjected to uniaxial stress changes. In this regard, this instrument has found considerable use by the mining industry. More recently, there have been attempts to use the stressmeter for determination of more general changes of the in situ rock stress. This paper reports on a study to characterize the performance of the rigid inclusion stressmeter for this application and presents results on the effect of anisotropic stress changes. These stress changes must be accounted for to properly analyze general changes of the in situ rock stress. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The rigid inclusion stressmeter is an instrument designed to measure variations of the in situ stress around a borehole. The stressmeter studied in this work, is manufactured by Irad Gage, Div. Creare Products, Inc. Lebanon, New Hampshire. It consists of a stiff hollow steel gage body that is preloaded across a borehole diameter. The preloading is activated by sliding a wedge between an upper platen and the gage body. Changes in the in situ stress result in slight deformations of the gage body. These deformations affect the stress in a highly tensioned wire that

THE Achotla mill of the Cia. Minera de Peñoles is of special interest in that it is one of the few still employing the chloridization process. The ore milled comes from the Suriana mine and consists of both oxide and sulphide, from neither of which can the gold or silver be extracted by a simple cyanide treatment. The mill was built in 1927, after several years of study in the development of the process1, and operated from December of that year until October 1930. Operations were resumed in February 1935, and have been continuous since, treating approximately 5000 tons per month, while the mine is getting up to full tonnage of 6500 tons per month.

The third special war meeting of the New York Section was held on Thursday evening, Sept. 27, in joint session with the New York Section of the American Electrochemical Society, in conjunction with the Third National Exposition -of-Chemical Industries, at the Grand Central Palace. The topic for discussion was ferro-alloys, and the supply' of raw materials for their manufacture. After a few introductory remarks by President Philip N. Moore, of the Institute, and President Colin G. Fink of the American Electrochemical Society, Mr. C. S. Newcomb presented his paper on "Chrome Mining and Concentration."
