Metallurgists have long believed that martensite in steel forms as plates along the octahedral {111} planes of austenite. Much has been written about mechanisms whereby units of the austenite lattice are pictured as transforming to martensite by shearing movements initiated along the octahedral planes of austenite, supposedly resulting in plates of martensite lying parallel to these planes of shear. A critical inspection of two or three photomicrographs of quenched hypereutectoid steel led us to the conclusion that the orientation habit of martensite, at least in hypereutectoid austenite, could not possibly be octahedral. Inasmuch as recent studies,30,31 of the martensite-type reaction in nonferrous alloy systems have established the irrational orientation habit as characteristic of this type of lattice transformation, the need for a thorough restudy of the crystallography of martensite formation in steel was evident. The present paper reports the results of such a study, extended to include both cementite and some of the products of constant-temperature decomposition of austenite. Also reported are a few of the results obtained from a microscopic and X-ray study of the austempering process in very high-carbon steel. I. The Martensite Transformation Previous Work Microstructure and Crystal Structure of Martensite.—Among the best series of published photomicrographs of quenched steels are those of Whitely,1 Robertson,2 Hanemann and Schrader,3 and Lucas.4 The crystal structure of martensite is body-centered tetragonal, with axial ratio varying from 1 near 0.0 per cent carbon to 1.08 for 1.75 per cent

CdS crystals have been grown from a number of metallic solvents such as bismuth, tin, lead, and cadmium. Etching studies have shown that plastic deformation occurs if the crystals are not removed from the solvent prior to the solidification of the solvent, on cooling. The deformed crystals show a umique exciton fluorescence as a function of edge dislocation density. If one grows the CdS in the eutectic alloy of the above four metals (commonly called Wood's metal) the crystals can be removed from the solvent with hot water and no plastic deformation occurs. In this paper, the liquidus solubility measurements of CdS, as a function of temperature, are presented. The data were obtained using a high -temperature filtration technique. CADMIUM-SULFIDE crystals have been grown from a number of metallic solvents1 such as cadmium, bismuth, tin, and lead. Liquidus solubilities of CdS in cadmium,2 bismuth,3 and tin4 have already been measured. Crystals of CdS, in all four metals, have been grown by solution growth: 1) by cooling a saturated solution and 2) by a solution transport method.1'"1 CdS crystals grown in these four solvents have a few characteristics in common: 1) 1.8°K photolumines-cent emission consisted mainly of the radiative recombination of the bound exciton commonly known as I,, 2) slip lines which could easily be seen by the naked eye, and 3) edge dislocation densities in the order of l05 per cu cm.1 It was decided that these slip lines and the high edge dislocation densities were caused by a plastic deformation of the CdS crystals. It was felt that this plastic deformation did not occur during the growth of the crystals nor during the cooling of the solution, but did occur when the solvent which was in contact with the crystals froze. If these assumptions were valid, the slip lines and the high number of dislocations could be reduced or eliminated by removing the crystals from the solvent before the solvent froze. Since crystals of CdS had already been grown separately in such solvents as bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium, it was felt that crystals could be grown in a eutectic mixture of these four metals. In this work a eutectic (or near eutectic) mixture of bismuth, lead, tin and cadmium in the proportion 50, 26.5, 13.5, and 10 wt pct, respectively, was used to grow CdS crystals. Such a mixture has a melting point of about 70°C and is close in composition to the alloy commonly known as Wood's metals. If the crystals could be grown from this mixture of solvents, and if hot water (>75°C) could be used to separate the crystals of CdS from the metallic solvent, it was hoped that CdS crystals could be grown with little or no plastic deformation which had been ob- served when crystals were grown from these solvents uncombined. CdS crystals were grown from this low melting eutectic mixture of bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium using the solvent transport method. CdS powder and the appropriate amount of metals were sealed in a quartz tube under a pressure of about 5 X 10-6 torr. This ampule was then placed in a vertical position in a furnace. The temperature was raised to about 900°C. The furnace was designed so that the top of the liquid column within the ampule was between 10° to 40°C higher than the bottom of the liquid column. These temperatures were measured on the outside of the quartz ampule. The ampule was maintained at temperature for 7 to 14 days (depending on the temperature at which transport was taking place) and then the furnace temperature was lowered until the temperature was about 125°C. The ampule was then removed from the furnace, placed in water maintained at about 90°C, and opened in this 90°C environment. The crystals could then be removed from this two-phase liquid (Wood's metal and water) by mechanically picking them out. Alternatively, the crystals could be quantitatively removed by adding an excess of mercury to the mixture of metals, crystals, and hot water. The hot solution of metals and the hot water could be evacuated using a small diameter tube connected to a vacuum. Small amounts of mercury and water could be removed by heating the crystals in vacuum. Crystals prepared using this technique showed no evidence of slip. However, some of these crystals did show edge dislocation densities as high as l04 per cu cm. Some few selected crystals showed no dislocations. Single crystals of CdS were grown as large as 5 by 5 by 0.5 mm. The ampules for the growth of these crystals were 13 mm O.D., 11 mm I.D., 150 mm! LIQUIDUS SOLUBILITY MEASUREMENTS The CdS starting materials was G.E. 118-8-2 powder which was fired in H2S at 1000°C, and then a vapor transport technique5 was applied to produce a "sound" mass of CdS. The Wood's metal was prepared by weighing out bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium in the proportions of 50, 26.5, 13.5, and 10 wt pct, respectively. The bismuth, cadmium, and lead were from the American Smelting and Refining Co. (ASARCO) and all had purities of 99.999+ pct. The tin was 99.9999 pct spectroscopic grade from the Vulcan Materials Co. The appropriate mixture was placed in a quartz tube, evacuated to a pressure of 5 X 10-6 torr, melted to a liquid, cooled to room temperature under this same vacuum. This ingot was then placed in another quartz tube, evacuated to 5 x l0-6 torr, and sealed off under vacuum. The ampule was then horizontally placed in a furnace. IN this war as in no former one, the use of metals has been the major factor governing success. For building new plants, new transport facilities whether by land, sea, or air, for our mechanized army, and for nearly all weapons, iron and steel has provided the basic material. Being the world leader in iron and steel production in peacetime, we soon adapted plants to production for war. Starting with a production of 66,000,000 tons of steel ingots in 1940 from a rated capacity of 80,000,000 tons which only could be reached by straining every productive device available, our industry expanded to 86,000,000 tons in 1942, and ultimately to 96,000,000 tons. To do so required expansion of every unit operation including mining, rail and water transportation, blast-furnace and steelmaking facilities, and rolling mills. New plants not only had to be built in record time but more output for each operation was essential. This performance required skillful operation and engineering techniques and also a better understanding of the physics and chemistry underlying such complex operations as the working of a big blast furnace. A vastly increased pig iron production made possible the great output of steel by an industry that had depended on scrap for its basic raw material even though sufficient scrap was unavailable. This was done by conversion of pig iron in the Bessemer either into steel or into a low-carbon product that was subsequently used in place of scrap in the open¬hearth steel furnace. Furthermore, by duplexing from the open-hearth to the electric furnace, and the construction of many new electric furnaces, our output of electric-furnace alloy steel was greatly increased. Moreover, techniques were developed by which alloy steel could be made in the open hearth with the result that our production of alloy steel reached the fantastic figure of 15,000,000 tons a year.

THE trying times experienced by the steel industry during the past four years have emphasized the necessity of producing pig iron at the lowest possible cost. The trend in both design and operation of blast furnaces has been toward this end rather than securing maximum production from a unit or group of units. In the following discussion the trend in design of stacks and auxiliary equipment will be taken up before operation is considered. Although few furnaces have been constructed in the past few years, the trend is definitely toward larger furnaces with a hearth diameter of 24 or 25 ft. Such a furnace is very flexible, being able to produce efficiently any desired daily tonnage between 500 and 1000 or more. The detail of the design of furnace stacks, with the exception of the top, has changed little in recent years.

The long awaited new Mining Engineering Handbook is taking shape under the leadership of A. B. Cummins, Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board for the SME Mining Engineering Handbook, and Ivan Given, Editor-in-Chief. The last Mining Engineers' Handbook, the Peele edition, published by John Wiley and Sons, was last revised in 1941. This book was and still is a virtual mine of information although a good deal of its content, especially the cost tables, is becoming rather antiquated. The new one-volume work will contain approximately 1600 pages and be divided into 36 sections. Quantification in recording geologic phenomena and application of well-known geologic principles to engineering works continued at an increasing rate during the year. Highway departments, water resources agencies, private firms and governmental agencies involved in tunnel excavations, dam site locations and construction, consultants and government experts in subsurface liquid-waste disposal, designers of underground storage facilities and city and regional planners all confirmed greater use of applied geology in their planning and implementation of plans. Applications of quantified geologic data to highway locations, slope control of cuts, raw material sources, water sources and water run- off showed a striking increase in number. Environmental geology and geologic hazards became part of the jargon of the geologic profession, and the American public began to realize more fully the significance of where they live, and on what and near what geologic phenomena which might effect their well-being. Tunnel work for water projects of almost dream-like magnitude kept geologic engineers busily engaged in predicting and testing local geologic conditions for construction projects. Disposal of industrial and radioactive liquid wastes continued as problems, but use of stratigraphic data, fluid flow rates and direction of flow helped solve some critical waste disposal problems. Unusual applications of seismic networks, remote sensing methods and X-ray techniques in geological engineering applications added other tools to this increasingly important profession.

Manganese dioxide reacts with sulfur dioxide solution in the absence of oxygen to form manganous ion and dithionate ion, together with a small amount of sulfate ion. The effects of SO, concentration, hydrogen ion concentration, stirring speed, and temperature on the rate of the reaction were studied. If it is assumed that undissociated SO2 molecules react rapidly with MnO, at active surface sites and that bisulfite ions react slowly, an equation can be derived that satisfactorily represents the observed reaction rates. For solutions in which the reaction with undissociated SO2 predominates, reaction rates and activation energies estimated from diffusion theory agree well with those found experimentally. Manganese dioxide dissolves readily in aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide. The nature of the dissolution reaction was first investigated by Gay-Lussac and welter1 in 1819; they identified a new oxysulfur radical, the dithionate ion, S2O6, as one of the reaction products. Since then, the reaction has become a standard method of preparing dithionates in the laboratory and one of the more promising methods of leaching manganese from low-grade ores. In the "dithionate process" developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines2,3, manganese-dioxide ore is suspended in a solution of calcium dithionate and leached with gas containing sulfur dioxide. INTRODUCTION Longwall mining made its debut in Indian coal mining scene around 1900. Despite this headstart, the application of the method has been slow and halting. Currently, there are some 16 operating longwall faces only in different Indian coalfields contributing to perhaps less than 3 percent of the total underground coal production. Ambitious plans for expansion of longwall mining notwithstanding, apprehensions on the cavability of Indian coalmeasure roof rocks and some unsavoury experiences with face collapses in caved longwalla have impeded wider adoption of the technique. Between 1960 and 1983, some 41 caved longwall faces were worked in Jharia, Raniganj, Karanpura and Korba Coalfields in India, of which 6 faces reportedly had collapsed(1). The first powered support longwall face was started in August 1978 at Monidih colliery which marked a major step forward in the introduction of advanced technological system in Indian coal industry. This paper attempts to analyse critically the experiences with longwall ground control in caved longwall faces in India. Experiences from powered support faces at Monidih, Dhemomain and Pathakhera are synthesized to provide an appraisal of the present status of caved longwall faces under the Indian coalmeasure roofs, which thus far have been characterised as “massive”. The geotechnical site factors at the powered support faces are evaluated and conclusions drawn on the pre-assessment of caving characteristics and support resistance required at the faces.

The distribution and properties of interseam and overburden rocks in coal mines is largely controlled by conditions at the time of their original deposition. Within the developed areas of the Bowen Basin, depositional environments range from fluvial through upper and lower detaic, to marginal marine and intertidal facies. Each environment has a characteristic association of lithologies with specific range of properties, and each lithology has a characteristic geometry. Fragmentation problems are associated with ancient sand channel systems, where the difficulties encountered depend on the dimension and shape of channels, their continuity, orientation to mining face and associated sediment bodies formed as levees or interdistributary muds. Stability problems in spoil, pit floor and highwalls are usually associated with mudstones which contain swelling clays derived from the original Permian volcanic source. This clay problem is aggravated by deep Tertiary weathering. Case studies are presented of detailed analyses and prediction of geomechanical properties on a mine site scale. These are used in investigating or forecasting fragmentation and stability hazards. The studies incorporate detailed field mapping, bore log data and computer data processing. They allow the development of detailed depositional models for specific interseam intervals within mines. As areas of depositional environment are identified they allow the construction of maps of similar mining conditions and the determination of the most suitable mining techniques.

OF no less importance nor less terrifying to consider than the marvelous effects of guns are those produced with fire by powder in underground mines. These are truly not only similar to fearful natural earthquakes, but it can perhaps be said that these made by art surpass the wrath of the earth with greater effect. For if the latter shakes it happens that it causes the things on the surface to shake and sometimes to fall into ruins, but the former not only shakes but always functions and destroys-surely a marvelous effect which is almost incomprehensible, and if experience did not demonstrate it, it could scarcely be believed. Who would say that the mountains, things of such great hardness, would yield to men, easily opening their bowels? Likewise, one who had not seen it would say that it was impossible for men to have a way of administering at will fearful and destructive thunderbolts which are of such a kind that, although men make them, they cannot protect themselves against them; indeed they cannot call themselves safe from the evilness of gunpowder even in mountains composed of very hard stones or in budded structures. For, as is seen, there is no seemingly impregnable fortress that does not yield when guns are brought near it. The salt-beds at Salton, on the line of the Southern Pacific railway, in San Diego county, California, have been successfully worked for many years by the corporation known as the East Liverpool Salt Co., and the salt has been largely used upon the Pacific coast generally and in the interior. But the industry has lately been destroyed by the overflow from the Colorado river. The salt is dissolved, and the waves of the Salton sea now roll 50 ft. above the site of this once thriving and growing business. The salt-bed was evidently the residual accumulation from the waters of an ancient lake, which I have named Cahuilla, from the name by which a large part of the valley—the home of the Cahuilla tribe of Indians—is known. The deposit covered a comparatively small area in the lowest part of the valley, 280 R. or more below the sea-level. This depressed area is now generally known as the Colorado desert, but has a soil of wonderful fertility wherever water can be had on its surface. The deserted beaches, and the water-lines, only a few feet above tide-level, upon the rocks of the bordering mountains, as well as a great abundance of shells in the soil, all bear decisive testimony to the former occupation of the valley by water. The White Pine mine site lies five miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County, Mich. Copper sulfide, mixed with some native copper, is mined by a room-and-pillar system from gently dipping Upper Kewee-nawan sediments. Depth of mining now varies from 700 to 1800 ft and the ore body continues to a depth of at least 3400 ft. An area roughly 21/2 miles square has already been mined. Mining height has varied from 61/2 to 22 ft. A rock mechanics program was set up in late 1963 to promote safety and mining efficiency. This note reports some of the findings. Rock Strength Compressive strength of small, dry specimens of sandstones, siltstones, and shales from the ore zone varies from 20,000 to 30,000 psi. This is intermediate between the softer coal mine sediments and the meta-morphic and igneous rocks of hard rock mines. Annual Cycle of Rock Failure Since 1963, every roof and pillar failure involving more than a few tons of rock has been examined and documented. Some 1500 stations have been installed for measuring convergence, -c1/1000 in., with Invar extensometers. The possibility of oil and gas production in Alabama his been little considered as yet. Gas and some oil have been found in northwestern Alabama, near Birmingham, in the Pennsylvanian beds, but the oil and gas possibilities in the Cretaceous beds are not generally appreciated. The recent activity of oil companies in that State has attracted much attention, and in this paper the main structural and the general strati-graphic features are described. Four favorable areas are outlined. These contain folds of major interest. There are other favorable areas which have not been mapped-l Commercial pools discovered in this area would have the advantage of being near tidewater. Mobile, Ala., on the Gulf of Mexico, would be the logical site for refineries and shipping facilities. A pipe line could readily be laid to that city from the Hatchitigbee and the Jackson areas. The logical outlet for the Geneva and the Gordon areas would be Panama City, Ha., on the Gulf of Mexico. Topography The whole of the area under consideration lies in the Gulf coastal plain and slopes gently to the southwest and west. The elevations vary from 200 to 400 ft. The mechanism, of the decrease in transition temperature of Nb3Sn was studied. Presintered Nb3Sn powder compacts were heated in a dynamic vacuum at elevated temperatures. Loss of tin resulted from these heat treatments and transition temperature as a function of tin loss was discontinuous at a critical value of tin loss. In general, decreases in transition temperature were correlated with deviations from AS a class, the A15 structure-type (also known as Cr3O or ß W) compounds have the highest superconducting transition temperatures.' In this class are stoichiometry and presence of vacancies in niobium sites. The effect of vacancy distribution on the physical properties of Nh3Sn is considered. It is concluded that the close-packed atomic A chain in the A3B A15 structure must be preserved both in coutinuity and direction if good superconducting properties are to he obtained. tempting to associate these high transition temperatures with the most unique crystallographic feature of the A3B structure: the three close-packed, orthogonal chains of A atoms.'0"' There are at least three principal mechanisms by which the perfection of these "A-atom chains" could be interrupted: changing stoichiometry, inducing disorder, or introducing vacancies. MR. ECKLEY B. COXE, in his able and interesting paper on " The Preparation of Small Sizes of Anthracite,"* read and discussed at the Glen Summit Meeting, October, 1891, refers to the reputed immense amount of coal contained in the culm-banks, which are the unsightly accompaniment of every mining operation in the anthracite coal-regions. Mr. Coxe thinks the available amount and value greatly exaggerated, giving among his reasons (1) the spoiling of the culm by mixing with other refuse; (2) its deterioration; (3) its destruction by fire ; and (4) frequent failures to realize expectations as to the size of the banks. These points are undoubtedly important factors in determining the advisability of working any individual bank, but they have a varying influence in the several regions, some prevailing more in one than in another. Although the amount of fuel lying waste in these banks is still an uncertain and undetermined quantity, yet no one can visit the Schuylkill region without being impressed with the fact that a considerable amount of culm, too valuable to be left merely to the mercy of the elements, surrounds and encumbers each site of an old or present colliery operation. The rapid increase in the number of washeries, and the demand for leases on old culm-banks, shows that, in the Schuylkill region at least, the question of deterioration doès not play an important part.
