Fifteen years ago, in his presidential address before the Washington Academy of Sciences,' Alfred H. Brooks said: "Applied geology can only maintain its present high position by continuing the researches which advance the knowledge of basic principles. Future progress in applied geology depends on progress in pure geology. Early in 1927, Dr. David White, then chairman of the Division of Geology and Geography of the National Research Council, appointed a committee "On the Processes of Ore Deposition," which was the first recognition by the Council of this branch of applied geology. This committee will not be able to solve the many complex problems involved; it can only clear the way, survey the field, state the problems and encourage systematic research. This short paper aims to outline and to analyze the present status of this kind of geological research, to ascertain the quality of the work and to suggest lines that might profitably be followed. Increasing Demand for Geologists Economic geology, or the art of geology, could develop only after the principles of geology and mineralogy had been established. Before that time it was merely a collection of trade rules accompanied by more or less wild speculations. Thus we observe the beginnings of economic geology in the period 1770-1820. Soon afterwards, the State Surveys were established in this country, with the realization that the natural resources should be investigated and described. Geology was hardly yet equal to the task of scientific research in relationships and genesis, however, and there followed a period of discouragement and stagnation. In the meanwhile, pure geology had again registered progress, and, based on its principles and also on the rapid mining development in the Cordilleran region, the present phase of the study of ore deposits began to take form. Raphael Pumpelly, S. F. Emmons and G. F. Becker were among the pioneers in this movement. The United States Geological Survey was organized. Ore deposits were scientifically described and studied along lines of structure and mineralogy; theories of genesis were advanced, not always permanent but based on sound induction.

PRoblems dealing with the movement or migration of fluids through porous beds have been the subject of much research. The subject is not peculiar to the production of oil and gas, as many investigators have studied the nature of this movement and its relationship to the problems of other industries. Darcyl conducted a series of experiments relating to the percolation of water through filter beds. King2 carried on an extensive series of laboratory experiments with the object of formulating some conception of the rate of movement of water through soils and sand strata in the drainage of surface water into underground channels and subsequent recovery of this water through wells drilled into the source beds for irrigation purposes. Slichter3 undertook a study of the same problem from a mathematical standpoint, and more recently Furnas4 has investigated the flow of gases through beds of broken solids with particular reference to blast-furnace operation. With specific reference to gas production, Muskat and Botset5 of the Gulf Research Laboratory undertook an experimental study to establish quantitatively the characteristics of and laws governing the flow of gases through consolidated and unconsolidated porous materials of fine texture with a view of predicting the performance of gas in an underground reservoir. There seems to be a general agreement that many of the relationships between the numerousfactors influencing the flow of fluids through porous materials are far too complicated to be attacked by analytical methods based upon a knowledge of hydrodynamics. RECENTLY it has been shown that aggregates of small liquid droplets of tin,' mercury' or gallium' kept from intercommunicating by suitable films do not solidify at an appreciable rate unless the supercooling is very much greater than that usually necessary to cause a large continuous mass of the metal to solidify. For example oxide-coated tin droplets1 (1 to 10 micron diam) must be supercooled 100" to 110°C before their rate of solidification becomes rapid, although large continuous masses of liquid tin usually begin to solidify when supercooled 30" or less." These experiments have been interpreted' on the hypothesis that nucleation of crystals in large continuous metal samples is almost always catalyzed by accidental inclusions. Therefore, if the metal is dispersed into a number of isolated droplets large in comparison with the number of inclusions, most of the droplets should not crystallize until a temperature sufficiently below the thermodynamic melt- ing point, T0, has been reached to permit an ap-preciable rate of homogeneous (noncatalyzed) nu-cleation. In general this temperature is very much less than the temperature at which the rate of heterogeneous (catalyzed) nucleation is appreciable. If this interpretation is correct then investigation of the kinetics of crystallization of small droplet aggregates should be one of the most fruitful methods of obtaining information about the homogeneous formation of crystal nuclei in liquids. In this paper the results obtained on gallium and mercury are reported more fully. In addition, results on the supercooling of aggregates of liquid bismuth and lead droplets are included. Experimental Procedure Some care must be exercised in the choice of a barrier to prevent the liquid droplets from coalescing lest the barrier itself catalyze the formation of crystal nuclei. From this standpoint, the most desirable barrier is vacuum or inert gas, but, because of the difficulty of experimental arrangement, solid compounds and adsorbed films have been selected. There are two guiding principles in the selection of compounds as barriers in addition to the requirement that they prevent coalescence of liquid droplets. First, the compound should be almost insoluble in the liquid metal and second, its lattice structure should be quite unlike that of the forming metal crystal. Even so, there is no a priori assurance that the solid compound film will not catalyze to some extent the formation of metal crystal nuclei. An adsorbed protective monolayer is less likely to be catalytic than a crystal compound film, but it is not often possible to find a monolayer that is stable under the experimental conditions. Also, it is desirable, though not generally essential, that the aggregate of droplets be prepared by breaking up the massive metal rather than from a powdered compound of the metal.

Two methods are used to obtain the relatiorlship between ratio of gas to oil permeability and gas saturation. One method is to calculate a curve from field measurements of reservoir behavior: the other is to measure the relationship on a core .sample in the laboratory. The curves resulting from these TWO methods arc often comparer1 and seldom found to agree. The most important reason for the nonagreement is often overlooked. This reason is that the performance k9/k0 curve is calculated with the assumption of uniform pressure and saturution throughout the reservoir. To show the differerence between performance type kg/k0 curves and laboratory type kg/k0 curves. two performance type kg/k0 curves for two different production rates were calculaled from the production perforrnance of a hypothetical reservoir for which a laboratory type curve was assumed. Production performance of the hypothetical reservoir bras calcu- lated by use of international Business Machine's 701 Computer. The perfortnance type kg/k0 curves differed from the laboratory curve for the hypothetical reservoir. The performance type crrrve for the lowest production rate most nearly coincided with the laboratory curve. INTRODUCTION Predictions of oil reservoir performance are often made with the aid of complex numerical calculations. An important quantity required in these calculations is the ratio of gas permeability to oil permeability (kg/k0 )at a particular gas saturation. Two methods arc used to obtain a relationship between this ratio and gas saturation. The curves resulting from these two methods are called performance kg/k0 curves and laboratory kg/k0 curves. The performance curve is obtained from field measurements of reservoir behavior. Particular kg/k0 values are calculated from the producing gas-oil ratio, the cumulative reservoir withdrawals, the original oil in place, the average reservoir pressure, and the PVT properties of the reservoir fluids. The particular kg/k0 values are then plotted against the average rcservoir gas saturations for the entire history period. In order to use this derived kg/k0 relationship for performance predictions, a curve through these points is extrapolated to higher gas saturations. The laboratory kg/k0 curve is obtained from measurements made on core samples. Saturation is maintained uniform throughout the core during these measurements. The kg/k0 curves obtained with these two independent methods are often compared and seldom are found to be the same. Various reasons have been offered for the lack of correlation. One is that insufficient core? were obtained to derive a curve representative of the reservoir rock. Another is that laboratory methods have failed to reproduce reservoir conditions. The most important reason for the noncorrelation has been often overlooked because of the difficulty in evaluating its effect. This reason is that the performance or field kg/k0 curve is calculated with the assumption of uniform pressure and saturation throughout the reservoir. In any

In the fall of 1912, the appearance of water in the oil of the Nevada Petroleum Co., Coalinga, Cal., made necessary the installation of a dehydrating plant to reduce the water below the 3 per cent. limit prescribed by the agency. Unlike the mining industry, technical literature of the oil industry is limited and extremely unsatisfactory. Until the recent efforts of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, no concerted movement has been instituted to secure publication of papers dealing with the problems of the oil business, and because of the additional fact that dehydrating of oil has not been practiced in California to any extent up to comparatively recent time, it was found necessary to experiment in order to determine the most satisfactory plan for this purpose. It is easy to write regarding successful enterprises, but, while not SO pleasant, it is equally desirable to write of failures so that others may be saved the loss incident to such investments. The water in this oil occurs both free and as an emulsion. Free water easily settles out, but the emulsion requires treatment. So far as can be determined, the emulsion consists of globules of water surrounded and enveloped by a film of oil. Starting with this hypothesis the theory has been evolved that in order to break up this emulsion the water must be heated at least to boiling point, when an explosion takes place destroying the globule. Unfortunately, this condition was not recognized in the installation of the first plant, which was planned on the following lines: A heater was arranged so that all the oil from the wells could be heated before reaching the shipping tanks, these being already fitted with coils for steam heating. Tanks were filled with about 4 ft. of water, live steam was turned into the coils and the water brought nearly to the boiling point, when the heated oil was run in. This for a time was partly successful, but the length of time necessary to apply this heat was too great for practical operating.

IN a previous paper Burwell and Wulff1 have shown by electron diffraction studies that allotropic transformations can be induced in 18-8 stainless steel by polishing to a depth of about 5 X 10-5 cm. The development of a successful etching technique, which removes accountable amounts of metal from the surface without pitting and without changing the root-mean-square profile as measured with an Abbot profilometer, led to the application of the whole technique and material to an investigation of various mechanical methods of surface preparation, such as grinding, lapping, superfinishing and cold-rolling. Ideally suited to such a study is 18-8 of low carbon and nitrogen content. The material can be heat-treated to produce a coarse-grained single-phase structure. On cold deformation there occurs not only a reduction in grain size but, at regions of maximum stress, a change of face-centered material to body-centered material, provided the metal is worked below about 200°C. When worked between 200° and 415°C., diffraction studies evidence a reduction in grain size without the appearance of any new body-centered ferrite. Ferrite, which can be referred also to strains induced by carbide precipitation, is evident when the material is worked at temperatures between 415° and 800°C. Stainless steel is advantageous because the usual surface-finishing operations do not readily oxidize it to any appreciable depth. In order to produce detectable oxide films on the surface of austenitic 18-8 in a time equivalent to that required to produce, for example, a fine ground finish on ½ sq. in., the sample must be held in a furnace or oxygen stream above 600°C. By using longer heating times, it is possible to achieve measurable oxide films on samples whose surface temperatures exceed only about 250°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus, material, and technique described in the previous paper1 were employed in this investigation. Samples of 18-8, 1 by 1 cm. by 4 mm., were carefully annealed in the austenitic range to produce a coarse-grained structure. They were then quenched and pickled to remove scale. On a lapping machine of the Graton2 type, both sides of each sample were polished to a flatness of 1/6 a wave length of sodium D light. Thereafter they were electrolytically etched to remove at least 1 X 10-3 cm. of the surface, a depth that is well below that of any deformations induced by surface preparation. Samples of this material, carefully mounted in steel holders, were then sent to various industrial organizations known for special finishing techniques. In the instrument shops at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology check samples were finished by the same methods, as far as they were available. Abbot profilometer3 readings were made on all the samples, which were then carefully degreased in double distilled benzine and alcohol, dried in a hot-filtered air blast, and kept in a desiccator. The uncertainty of finding the exact equivalents fortechnical expressions in different languages has led me to think that a glossary of furnace-terms would be useful to members of the profession. I was led, some years ago, to prepare a small one, which has been found so very useful, that I have arranged one for presentation to the Institute, for four different 'types of furnaces, in the hope that it may prove of use to those who are in the habit of consulting foreign technical journals, I was further induced to make the attempt in the hope that it might tend to make the terminology less complicated than it now is, and also to make it more uniform over larger districts. The idea of referring to a drawing which expresses exactly what is meant, resulted from the necessity of presenting such subjects to students, and will, it is hoped, prove much more useful than the mere dictionary arrangement in alphabetical order. The drawing of the blast-furnace was prepared for me by Mr. J. P. Witherow, of Pitsburgh ; the drawing of the open-hearth furnace by Mr. S. T. Wellman, of Cleveland, and the reverberatory furnace by Mr. John Fritz, of Bethlehem. The bloomary-furnace is taken from my own paper* on Bloomaries, but, in order to have a complete furnace, I have introduced into the drawing of those used at Saranac the guard-plate used at Ironville. The interest which has been taken in the preparation of this paper by those gentlemen who have contributed the drawings, has been supplemented by gentlemen in Europe who have taken the trouble to read the proof. In France it has been read by Mr. Lodin, of the School of Mines, and by Mr. Chaper, of Paris, and in Germany by Dr. Wedding, of Berlin, and Mr. Luhrman, of Osnabruck. The preparation of the paper has been much more difficult than was anticipated, and its value has been very much enhanced by Dr. Raymond's kind assistance and cooperation; and to him, as well as to all the other gentlemen, Iam very much indebted. The wrought alloys of aluminum with small amounts of copper and of magnesium have, with the development of the automotive and aircraft industries, sprung into prominence through the medium of duralumin; but the cast alloys remained in the background because their possibilities in the heat-treated condition were either not recognized or not fully investigated. In 1919, the Bureau of Standards published a preliminary survey1 of this field, which pointed out that, in general, the ultimate strength and the percentage of elongation of the alloys of aluminum with and without magnesium could be improved by so simple a treatment as heating at 932' F. (500" C.) for 2 hr., cooling in air, and aging at room temperature for several days. British investigators, too, working with chill-cast material, found that" considerable improvement in the mechanical properties of copper-aluminum alloys may be obtained from suitable heat treatment applied to castings."' Jeffries and Gibson8 made the first contribution to the literature dealing exclusively with the heat treatment of sand-cast aluminum-base alloys, describing the effect of small additions or of combinations of copper, magnesium, and iron on the response to a short heat treatment comprising heating at 932" F. in a nitrate bath for 1 hr., quenching in fish oil, and reheating at 300' F. for for 1 hr. Their results disclosed the facts that the ultimate strength and the percentage of elongation of sound alloys were usually, and quite uniformly, improved by heat treatment; that with the iron content ranging between 0.36 and 0.88 per cent. and the silicon content between 0.24 and 0.60 per cent. the effect of increasing the copper content (Tables 10

The following specifications, proposed by a sub-committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, are still to be adopted and subsequently submitted to the International Association for Testing Materials. Standard Specifications for Pig-Iron and Castings. I. Analysis.—It is recommended that all purchases be made by analysis. II. Sampling.—In contracts where pig-iron is sold by chemical analysis, each carload, or its equivalent, shall be considered as a unit. At least one pig shall be selected at random from each two tons of every carload, and so as to fairly represent it. Drillings shall be taken so as to fairly represent the fracture surface of each pig, and the sample analyzed shall consist of an equal quantity of drillings from each pig, well mixed and ground before analysis. III. Allowances and Penalties.—III all contracts, in the absence of a definite understanding to the contrary, a variation of 10 per cent. of silicon, either way, and of .01 in sulphur above the standard is allowed. A deficiency of over 10 per cent. in the silicon, up to 20 per cent., and a further increase in sulphur up to .01 over the above allowance subjects the shipment to a penalty of 1 per cent. in the price for each element so affected. IV. Base Analysis OF Grades. —In the absence of specifications the following numbers, known to the trade, shall represent the appended analyses for standard grades of foundry pig-iron, irrespective of the fracture, and subject to allowances and penalties as above. Description of Pipes.—The pipes shall be made with hub- and spigot-joints, and shall accurately conform to the dimensions given in Tables Nos. I. and 11. They shall be straight and shall be true circles in section, with their inner and outer surfaces concentric, and shall be of the specified dimeneions in outside diameter. They shall be at least 12 feet in length, exclusive of socket. For pipes of each size from 4-inch to 24-inch, inclusive, there shall be two standards of outside diameter, and for pipes from 30-inch to 60-inch, inclusive, there shall be four standards of outside diameter, as shown by Table No. 11.

INTRODUCTION As mineral particles are made smaller and smaller, it follows that their surfaces assume a greater and greater importance. In the extreme, the colloidal systems are characterized by the complete dominance of surface over bulk properties. Surface characteristics and properties will clearly influence any fine-particle processing operation. Comminution, for example, is a process of creating new surface. Agglomeration, on the other hand, may involve the reduction of surface area and the forces involved are generally surface forces. All mineral separations, solid-solid as well as solid-fluid, involve the treatment of two or more phases (solid plus liquid and/or gas). As the interfacial area increases, so will its effects on processing. Both physical and chemical separations are influenced by interfacial phenomena. Gravity separations are usually performed in a liquid phase and may be affected, for example, by the wetting characteristics of the solids. Flotation processes, of course, are based on the exploitation of differences in surface properties. Hydrometallurgical processing usually involves interfacial chemical reactions, e.g. leaching. The rates of such reactions depend on surface area and may be influenced by electrochemical effects in the electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, or by adsorption of reactant and/or product species from solution. In characterizing a mineral surface, it is important to consider first the surface area, since this determines the relative importance of the interfacial effects. The structure and chemical composition of the surface, which may depend on segregation of impurities within the solid and on adsorption from the external environment as well as on the bulk composition of the solid, will generally determine such

One who has been trained in belief in the law of supply and demand and its effect upon prices finds it difficult to adjust himself to the minute regulations imposed by the New Deal, and also to the bewildering changes of government policy as expressed within a short period of time between the antitrust laws and the N.R.A., and later by the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act of 1935. A survey of the coal industry since the World War, both in this country and Great Britain, however, shows that regulation of some sort is needed if any stabilization is to be achieved and if the wage structure and economic welfare of the many communities dependent solely upon coal are to be maintained. Let us look at what has happened to the industry since 1920, which can be considered as the end of the period affected by the war influence. This discussion will be confined solely to bituminous coal, although many of the general conditions are equally applicable to anthracite, the position of which now is at least as bad as that of the softer variety. Since 1920—to the end of 1934—the production of coal has decreased from 568.7 million to 358.4 million tons, or 37 per cent; the number of mines from 14,766 to 6,258, or 58 per cent; the average annual production per mine has changed from 38,512 to 57,425 tons, or 50 per cent. The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneconomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion. THE purpose of this paper is to present a method of designing safe and economical arch structures that are to be constructed of concrete or directly of original earth materials. The experimental data used to illustrate the design method are taken from Bucky and Fentress,1,2 and the application of the ideas presented by them is extended by obtaining an additional set of curves from which arch structures may be designed. This design method is based upon the following principles of similitude: A scalar model made of the same material as that of the full sized structure will behave similarly to its prototype if the density of the model is increased in the same proportion as its linear scale is decreased. Let R represent the scale or model ratio, namely, the ratio of a prototype linear dimension to the corresponding model linear dimension. The effect of increased density may be obtained by rotating the model in a centrifuge at a speed such that the centrifugal field exerts on the model an accelerative force R times the accelerative force of gravity. Under these conditions; (I) model unit stresses are equal to corresponding prototype unit stresses, (2) the ratio of the prototype deformation at a given point to the model deformation at a similar point is equal to the scale ratio, R, and (3) the model and the prototype will behave similarly within and beyond the elastic limits of strain. According to the above relations, such models can be used to solve the following problems: I. The dimensions of the most economical safe arch structure for a given load. 2. The maximum safe roof span underground for given geologic conditions. The procedure is described briefly as follows. Tests are made by rotating in a centrifuge a number of models that repIesent a variety of prototype loads and dimensions. From the experimental data, curves are plotted to show the relations between these loads and dimensions. The curves are used to solve directly the problems stated above. Structural design is based upon the working (safe) stress of the material of construction, which is established by applying a factor of safety to the experimentally determined ultimate strength of the material. In conformity with this principle, each model is gradually loaded until failure occurs. A safety factor is then applied to the results. If a safety factor of 4 is used, a given model at failure represents a safe prototype, the linear dimensions of which are equal to one-fourth the model ratio at failure times the corresponding model dimensions. Introduction.—The recent developments in the metallurgy of aluminum and its consequent rapidly growing use in the arts are at present attracting considerable attention to its ores. The success of the Hall electrolytic process, by which the metal is obtained directly from the oxide, has removed bauxite from the position of a rather uninteresting mineral to that of an important ore. Its production on a commercial scale is so recent, particularly in this country, that little attention has yet been paid to its mode of occurrence and origin.. Any investigation, therefore, which throws light upon these points should be of interest to mining engineers- at the present time, especially if the conclusions afford a basis for estimating the probable extent and value of deposits already known and a mane of directing search for others. Two localities in the United States have so far yielded bauxite in commercial quantities. These are in Arkansas and in the Coosa valley of Georgia and Alabama. According to descriptions of the Arkansas deposits by Branner, they bear little resemblance to those in the Southern Appalachians and their geological relations appear to be entirely different. Only the latter deposits are considered in the following paper. These have been briefly described by McCalley† and Spencer.† They were visited by the writer during the past summer and somewhat carefully examined, in connection with the study of the areal geology of the region. China now leads the world in antimony production, having contributed during recent years something over 60 per cent. of the world's production. The history of the antimony industry of China dates back to 1897 when the Tai Shing Co. was formed, under contract with the Hunan Bureau of Mines, for the smelting of the ore to crude; and in 1908 the Wah Chang Mining & Smelting Co. was formed for the smelting and refining of the ore and crude to regulus. The writer was then asked to take charge of the erection and control of this first plant for regulus production in China and has, since then, been more or less connected with the antimony industry in this country. This paper contains the results of many years' experience in connection with the Wah Chang Mining & Smelting Co., Changsha; the Pao Tai Mining & Smelting Co., Wuchow; the Loong Kee Smelting Works and the To-Cheng Smelting Works, Hankow; as well as information gathered from various other small smelters, scattered in different parts of the Provinces of Hunan, Hupeh, Kwangsi, and Kwangtung. An idea of the growing importance of regulus production in this country can be gleaned from the fact that, within a period of about 8 years, the export of regulus from Hunan alone jumped from 3 tons in 1908 to about 6000 tons in 1915; that a production of about 23,000 tons of regulus per year could easily be effected from all the smelters, as tabulated below, most of which were erected a year or two ago under the stimulus of the war booms, if the price at Hankow were to stay somewhere about $900 (Mexican) per ton, half of what it was at its height, thus enabling the utilization of ores from the hinterlands of the provinces; and even under the present ruling of prices and the closing of the less favored smelters, the production of regulus should not be less than 12,000 tons per year.

PROFESSOR HENRY M. HOWE, New York, N. Y. :-This paper of Mr. Sauveur's is extremely interesting. It is one of those papers that one wishes to read in the quiet of one's study, where it can be read with great profit. There are many points which he makes which I think are of very great value, in particular as to the importance of getting fine ;grained graphite by a relatively rapid cooling, combined with a high percentage of silicon. That theory would seem to be very promising; how far it has actually been carried out very likely Dr. Moldenke can. tell us.

IN their paper on the directional properties in cold-rolled and annealed commercial bronze,1 Phillips and Samans suggest that cupronickel, under distinctly different treatments, shows both "45° ears" and "90° ears. " Fig. 1 shows the ears on some cupronickel cups made some 17 years ago for bullet jackets for small arms ammunition. The method of cupping, the shape of cupping tools, etc., were found to have very little influence on the earing tendency, but the deeper the cup was drawn, the higher the ears would be.

An article on the subject of electrolytic zinc no longer needs to be preceded by an apology. The production of zinc by electrolysis is past the laboratory stage and has become an economic factor of considerable importance in the total production of zinc in the United States. The various methods of procedure to be followed fa the greatest economy of manufacture are fairly well known, consequently a detailed description of any method is no longer necessary or desirable. In this paper I shall endeavor to lay down some of the governing conditions in this industry, the relation of methods to ore deposits, freight rates, and sources of power supply. Power Points Assuming for a moment that, for the present at least, the electrolytic production of zinc will be confined to Those localities having developed water power, a glance at these powers so developed in the United States, with their relation to known zinc orebodies of economic size, will not be without interest. Northwest In the Northwest we have water powers, developed and undeveloped, . in Washington and Montana. These must, of course, bear a close relation to the rapidly growing zinc production of the Coeur d'Alenes and of the Butte districts. In general, the power of the territory in question is relatively low-priced, at least as compared with the cost of developing power from coal, and the near neighborhood of large bodies of more or less complex zinc ores makes these water powers of more than usual interest. The same remarks may be applied equally to the developed water powers of the Canadian side of the line in the Northwest, where we have again commercially available complex ore deposits such as are being exploited today at and near Trail. In the latter part of the summer of 1913 the Conservation Commission of the State of Louisiana, under presidency of M: L. Alexander, decided to stop the waste of natural gas going on at the "burning gas-well," Located about 2 mile southeast of Oil City, La. On several occasions, both in newspapers and in reports, comment had been made on the condition of this well, its harmful effect on the Caddo gas field, and the considerable loss, estimated at several thousand dollars each month, caused by the escape of the valuable fuel., But nothing had been done to bring the well under control and prevent further waste of gas until the State Conservation Commission took the matter in hand. The gas fields of Louisiana are among the greatest in the country. So far most of the gas has been found in the Caddo field proper, although considerable development has been done in and around the city of Shreveport and near the town of Mansfield in DeSoto parish. To extend the life of the gas fields and to prevent the quick exhaustion of the supply of the natural fuel are matters of vital importance for this section of the country. Four gas companies have entered the Caddo field and supply the surrounding towns and cities With gas. The Arkansas Natural Gas Co. has pipe lines to Little Rock, Ark., and supplies gas to the following cities and towns in that State: Texarkana, Hope, Garland, Emmet, Prescott, Boughton, Beirne, Gurdon, Arkadelphia, Gum Springs, Mal-vern, Dsnaldson, Gifford, Perla, Beaton, Beauxite, Mabelvale, Bryant, Sheridan, Pine Bluff, Little Rock, Argenta, Pulaski Heights, and Hot Springs. The Southwestern Gas & Electric Co. transports gas to Mooringsport, Blanchard, Caddo, Rodessa, Oil City, Vivian, Bloomburg, Hosston, Ida, Dixie, Belcher, and Shreveport. The Marshall Gas Co. supplies gas to the town of Marshall, Texas. The Louisiana Co. has a line to Shreveport. In, the oil field the gas is used for drilling purposes, and the operators either have their own gas system or buy from the gas companies. At the present time the surrounding territory depends for its fuel supply on the Caddo field, and the importance of the conservation of the natural-gas
