THE distinguishing principle of the Tromp process is the use of a medium in the bath which is not stable, i.e., the solids will settle and the density of the medium increases with depth. A medium of uniform density can most easily be effected by agitation or by means which increase the viscosity of the medium. Either of these works against the sharpness of separation of coal from its impurities. The Tromp process grinds the medium solids to relative coarseness, allows them to settle downward in the bath without hindrance, and introduces horizontal currents of medium at intermediate levels between top and bottom of the bath. This prevents any accumulation of particles denser than the upper layer of the medium from which the clean coal is conveyed away or an accumulation of particles lighter than the bottom layer or medium whence the refuse is removed. In a relatively shallow bath making a two-product separation, the intermediate horizontal currents sweep these intermediate gravity materials away to be discharged with the refuse removed by the conveyor. Such a system provides a number of advantages. The gravity of separation can be changed simply by changing the density of the medium without changing particle size of medium solids or other conditions, as would be necessary with a system requiring uniform or stable density throughout the bath. Some installations in Europe separate at 1.40 sp gr on one shift, producing a superclean coal, and on the next shift reclean refuse from dry cleaning units and effect a separation at 1.80 sp gr. Medium solids may be much coarser in size consist, which reduces the viscosity of the medium and promotes its fluidity and in turn the sharpness of separation. Coarser medium solids with a more rapid settling rate are much more easily recoverable from the dilute medium rinsed from the products. Computer pit design techniques generally make use of models in which the deposit is represented by a regular array of data. Using a regular system, the number of data points required to represent the air, waste and mineralization in a large deposit become excessive. The number of blocks used to describe the deposit is dependent upon the block size. The quality of the pit wall slope design also is dependent upon the block size used and the method of defining the slope. The error associated with reserve calculations becomes greater with increasing block size. A deposit model consisting of variable sized air and mineralized blocks has been developed at the University of British Columbia and improved upon at Climax for pit design work. The method permits put- ting the entire model in core for rapid data processing. This permits the use of a versatile cone generation technique which allows close adherence to variable slope constraints in all directions. The conical shape is approximated by rectangles on each level which equal the area of the ideal conical intersection. The shape of the intersection may vary from approximately circular to elipsoidal. The approximate cone shape is controlled by the slope constraints applicable at the point of intersection on the bench. The overall modeling technique greatly assists the pit design engineer in developing a high quality pit design.

The Kotchkar mining-district, known as the Kotchkar System, is situated in the Orenburg government, in Eastern Russia, in the great plateau- or steppe-country immediately adjacent to the eastern slopes of the Ural mountains. Its longer dimension is north and south about 27 miles, while in the widest (northern) portion the distance across is 22 miles. The district lies 40 miles southwest of Miass, a station of the Trans-Siberian railway, and half-way between this village and that of Troitsk. It contains also the not inconsiderable settlements of Kotchkar and Eosobrodskoit., the last a Kossak town. So far as explored, the district is known to contain from 300 to 400 auriferous veins. ? Although the topography is generally of an exceedingly flat character, the country is traversed by several small rivulets running from west to east, and flowing into the Sanarka and Kamenka rivers. Since 1844 placers have been worked in the district, but it was not until 1867 that veins were discovered, and these have been worked only since the impoverishment of the alluvial deposits. The deposit with which this paper especially deals is known as the Ouspensky mine, one of twelve owned by MM. de Zelenkoff & Cie., five of which are situated in the Kotchkar System. An opportunity of visiting this mine was afforded the writers, in eonnection with an excursion of the VII. session of the International Geological Congress; held in Russia during the summer of 1897. A detailed breakdown of mining costs, available to management on monthly and year-to-date bases, is mandatory for a controlled and efficient mining operation. A simple lump sum reporting of costs may indicate a profit or loss differential, but it does not allow an effective search for areas of possible cost reduction. Moreover, functional reporting is necessary on a timely basis so as to note trends of increasing costs In specific areas, which in turn allow possible preventive action by management. Definitive cost information helps to eliminate the tendency to overlook areas where cost Improvements can be made. A good cost control system points out salient operational weaknesses by: ( 1 ) allowing comparison of functional costs with similar costs of other mines and (2) pinpointing sudden increases over unit empirical costs within the organization. In general, the cost accounting structure is relatively uniform within large open pit mines, but surprisingly some systems will overlook the need for detailed breakout in comparatively high cost areas. In some other systems, unrelated costs will be lumped together, preventing careful analysis of cost accrual.

GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHES DIVISION OF ENGINEERING Government supervision of employment for technical men has been inaugurated by the United States Employment Service, through the establishment of a Division of Engineering, with A. H. Krom, of Chicago, formerly Secretary of the American Association of Engineers, as Director. War demands on the engineering profession have already caused a serious shortage of men with mechanical designing experience and those with practical experience in chemical engineering. At present the professional organizing mediums reach less than 20 per cent. of the estimated 300,000 technical men in the country. This is not a satisfactory arrangement for war times. All the technical men of the country must be reached and, in addition, all men with technical experience must be carefully registered so that they will be immediately available. The advantages of such a governmental registering and systematizing of employment will be apparent at once, to the engineer. Considering that this is principally an engineer's war, the importance of Federal direction of distribution and conservation of the technical service of the country is apparent. The Service will he started through the office of the Director of Engineering, 29 S. LaSalle St., Chicago. All technical men desiring to register for emergency Government work or permanent advancement in positions meeting their qualifications, are urged to volunteer at once for registration, classification and employment.

In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

A STUDY of the ore to be treated should be the first step in deciding on a machine for crushing or grinding. Coarse crushing is practically confined to the jaw and the gyratory crushers, the large-size jaw type being often employed in large installations as a primary crusher, followed by the gyratory type for secondary reduction. In small plants where mine-run ore is reduced in a single step, either of these machines will do the work. In intermediate and fine grinding, various machines are used. The relative merit of the different types will be governed in no small measure by the size of the installation, the character of the ore to be reduced and the final product desired for subsequent treatment. It should be possible, nevertheless, with the data available, if properly classified, to arrive at an approximation of the relative efficiency of these intermediate and fine grinders. It should be possible, also, to determine the economic grinding range of the different machines. With this in mind, it will be the object of this article to indicate, in rough outline, how the data available may be classified, rather than to attempt to discuss any particular practice and compare the results with other practices. Conclusions or generalizations can not be drawn without an exhaustive classification of data; in fact, many vital points will have to be determined by additional experiments which can be carried on most advantageously in the laboratory. The expense en-tailed in such experiments would be worth while if the data obtained should lead to definite conclusions that would aid in standardizing and simplifying grinding practice.

Engineering design problems encountered by mining engineers often depend on the properties of natural granular materials such as soil, poorly consolidated sediment, fault gouge, and hydrothermally produced clay. The physical properties of such granular materials frequently are determined by the properties of silicate clays. In most mining applications, the clays are in contact with water. Swelling of clay due to water infiltration can interfere with underground support and haulage systems. Water-saturated clay on fault, fracture, and bedding planes causes slope failures in open pit mines, roof falls and heaving of weak underclays in coal mines. Water may be removed and cementing agents may be produced in clays by electrical methods. When an electrical potential gradient is applied to a charged capillary by two electrodes, water moves toward the negative electrode.1 This electrokinetic phenomena is known as electroosmosis and has been used to successfully dewater clay minerals which lack strength because of water. A consolidation effect occurs when the flow of water is accompanied by a decrease in water content. Electrochemical changes in the clay result in cementing and irreversible hardening. Theory A mathematical basis of electroosmotic phenomena is presented by Helmholtz.3 Smoluchowski5 modifies Helmholtz’ model and presents Eq. 1 to describe fluid flow velocity due to electroosmosis. For this formula, the zeta potential can be measured experimentally. The Helmholtz-Smoluchowski model is reasonably valid for clay aggregates with large pores saturated with fresh water or dilute electrolyte solutions.° An assumption used for Eq. 1 (equations are given Table 1; terms are defined in Table 2) is that the thickness of the electrical double layer surrounding the clay particles is small compared with the pore radii. Because this is generally not the case, Schmid7 presents Eq. 2. The volume charge density in the pore may be approximated from cation exchange capacity and porosity measurements. Casagrande8 offers a semi-empirical relationship (Eq. 3) for volume rate of electroosmotic flow and finds that k, is relatively constant for most clays with an average

A. Sawatzky (Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd.)—The detailed criticism by Markowitz of my simple treatment of the thermal diffusion of hydrogen in Zircaloy-2 indicates that my paper was not as lucidly written as it could have been. I would therefore like to reiterate several of the main points of my proposed mechanism and describe in more detail some of the features only implied in the original paper. The distribution equation derived in my paper was stated to hold only for the case where the volume taken up by the hydride was small compared to the volume taken up by the solid solution phase, subsequent work, mentioned below, having shown it to be out by only a few percent up to a hydrogen concentration of about 3000 ppm. Of course, hydrogen in the two-phase region alone is not conserved in my treatment as pointed out by Markowitz. On the contrary, one of the important features of my proposed mechanism is that in the presence of a temperature gradient a two-phase region cannot exist over the whole specimen. For example, if the specimen is entirely a + 6 initially, then on application of a temperature gradient, a single phase (a) region at the hot surface develops from time t = 0 onwards. As mentioned in my original paper, the interface between the a and a+d regions moves toward the colder surface of the specimen with a discontinuity in hydrogen concen- tration developing at the interface and increasing with time. This interface moves at such a rate that hydrogen in the specimen as a whole is conserved. It must be pointed out that my distribution equation (Eq. [5] in Markowitz's paper) holds only for linear geometry. It is easy to show that for the cylindrical geometry of Markowitz the assumptions used in my treatment lead to

R. F. WOOD,* Sandusky, Ohio.-I made a few tests of gun-metal specimens, after I noticed the results on quenching -reported by the Bureau of Standards. The data of one such test are given herewith. The bars were heat treated and quenched before they were machined, and in all cases they were brought up to 700° or 800°. They became extremely brittle,, showed almost no elongation, except such as was caused by the failure of the pieces to fit together after they were pulled, and the tensile stength was reduced from around 35,000 to about 13,000 lb. per sq. in. In addition, the weakening effect of the quenching seemed to be almost as marked when the bar was allowed to slowly air-cool from red to black, and then quenched, as it was by quenching directly from the red heat. Test Bars.-Rough size, 9/16 in. diam. over test section, grips 13/16 in. diam. Cast two in a flask, one on each side of a block 8 by 4 by 1 in. and fin-gated thereto from the grips but not from the test section. Poured with flask in inclined position, with gate to lower end of block and riser from upper end of each test bar. Bars were machined to ½ in. over the test section, after heat treatment. Casting the Bars.-Charge of 1500 lb. consisting of 400 lb. of new metals and 1100 lb. of G turnings and scrap was melted in open-flame oil furnaces and then poured into a 1-ton ladle. From the ladle 150 lb. was poured into a preheated No. 50 crucible, land from this the flasks of test bars were poured. The six flasks are indicated below by the numbers 1 to 6 and the bars in each flask by the letters a and b, thus 4a and 4h, for instance, were the two bars in flask No. 4.

A rock mechanics instrumentation and monitoring program was implemented during pillar extraction at Gulf Mineral Resources' Mt. Taylor Mine, the deepest uranium mine in the U.S. Three types of monitoring were employed: (1) drift convergence around stopes (using a portable tube extensometer), (2) stress changes in pillars (using vibrating wire stressmeters in horizontal boreholes), and (3) load changes in haulageways under stopes (using vibrating wire load cells in jack stands). Results include convergence-time graphs, convergence contour maps, stress-time graphs, a stress increase contour map, load-time graphs, and abutment load limit maps. Major factors influencing results include (1) size of pillars around the extraction area, and (2) presence and orientation of a major fault adjacent to one extraction area. These factors, combined with pillar extraction, produced evidence of load transfer over 120 m from a stope measuring only 55 m x 45 m. Vertical stress increases of 7 to 17 MPa (1000 to 2500 psi) within 60 m of the stope were obtained using the stress- meter manufacturer's method. The fault apparently prevented load transfer in the down-dip direction but increased load transfer in the up-dip direction. Convergence rates of up to 1.3 cm/day (0.5 in/day) were measured at two stations. Instruments were generally reliable despite adverse underground conditions. The instrumentation and monitoring program at Mt. Taylor provided a warning system against ground control problems and a characterization of ground behavior for future development and extraction of pillars. Recommendations are made for future mining and instrumentation practices.

The oil shales of the Green River Formation in the United States have been considered as a source of liquid hydrocarbons since 1908, with the first retort constructed in Colorado in 1917. However, it was not until 1944 that the mining characteristics of oil shale were investigated in a systematic manner. During the period 1944 through 1956, the Selective Mine and the Demonstration Mine (also referred to as the Anvil Points Mine) were operated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) near Rifle, Colorado. Significant progress was made in developing a room and pillar mining method by which oil shale could be mined safely at a very low cost per ton. Mechanical properties of oil shale were determined, safe room spans and roof support techniques were established, and drilling and blasting methods for oil shale were developed. As a follow-on to this USBM effort, a consortium of six oil companies with Mobil Oil Company as project manager carried out a research program during the period 1964-68 at the Mobil mine, located in the vicinity of the Anvil Points mine. Rock mechanics investigations were conducted as a part of this research program, and consisted of laboratory studies, in-situ stress determinations, and roof and pillar instrumentation. This paper will discuss the findings at the Anvil Points mine and Mobil mine to illustrate the stability considerations in underground oil shale mining.

I had the good fortune to visit the Stockholm Exposition just before its close in October last, and to get a glimpse of the methods used in Sweden in making the wonderful steel and iron for which its furnaces are so famous. My time and opportunities for observation were limited, but some points which I noted may be worth bringing to the notice of the Institute. The Exposition itself was confined to the natural and artificial products of Scanclinavia, and therefore iron and steel held a very prominent place in it. There was a complete collection of the rocks and ores of the Peninsula made by the Geological Survey; and every iron-mine of note exhibited a glass model of its workings, as well as classified specimens, accompaniecl by thorough analyses of the ores. Another feature of interest was the display of models of the old mining-machinery, in the invention and introduction of which Sweden led the way, and of the old and new surveying-instruments and compasses devised for the exploration of the Swedish iron-ore bodies, all of which are more or less magnetic. The magnetometric collection and exhibit of methods of operation made by Prof. Nordestrijm were supremely instructive. The larger metallurgical works, such as those of the Kopparberg and Sandvik companies, exhibited their wares in separate pavilions, in which crude and manufactured objects were arranged most eflectively and tastefully; while the smaller companies erected in the Industrial Arts Building trophies, every one of which was an object of beauty. One was struck on all sides by the fine asthetic feeling exhibited in the ingenious installation of materials and objects not easily lending themselves to artistic treatment. Hammers, picks and drill-steel were grouped into mural designs which it was a delight to look at.

THEORETICAL considerations by one of the authors have led1 to the prediction that the dynamic internal friction of annealed metals has a broad maximum at a certain grain size. This prediction they have veri-fied2 for alpha brass. In the present paper the theory is extended to include the precise manner in which the internal friction varies with grain size on either side of the maximum. New experimental data are pre¬sented to test this extended theory. The physical basis for the type of internal friction that is being investi-gated lies in the interplay between stress and temperature. Just as local fluctuations in temperature give rise to local fluctuations in stress, so like-wise fluctuations in stress give rise to fluctuations in temperature. But temperature gradients give rise to necessarily irreversible thermal cur-rents, and hence to internal friction. The theory for this type of internal friction has been developed quantitatively,3 and has been experimentally verified,4,5 for the particularly simple case of the transverse thermal cur-rents accompanying transverse vibrations. Of more fundamental impor-tance are the intercrystalline thermal currents accompanying all types of vibration. The variation in stress across grain boundaries arises from the elastic anisotropy and at least partial random orientation of the individual crystallites. An exact quantitative treatment of the internal friction due to these thermal currents is of course out of the question. However, much information can be obtained from general arguments.1,6 Thus when the frequency of vibration f is low, or when the grain size d is small, adja-cent grains remain nearly in thermal equilibrium, and vibration proceeds isothermally with little internal friction. Again, when the frequency is high, or the grain size large, the heat flow per cycle is small, the vibration proceeds adiabatically with little internal friction. The principal interest in the oil situation in Colombia during the year centered around the enactment of the new petroleum law and the applications for concessions subsequently made by various interests. The year was a comparatively uneventful one from the standpoint of actual operations of drilling and development. There was a falling off both in exploratory work and in the development of producing properties; and as a result of curtailment of production, the output of oil from the country dropped to the lowest level since the completion of the looping of the Andian pipe line to the coast in 1927. Legislation Law No. 371 of 1931, with its Regulatory Decree No. 1270, was enacted during the year and marked Colombia's attempt to encourage more extensive exploration and development of the prospective oil resources of the country. Some of the outstanding provisions of the law are as follows: Tracts may be acquired by a concessionnaire directly and by transfer ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 hectares, except in certain reserved territories east of the summit of the eastern cordilleras where the maximum is increased to 200,000 ha. A security deposit of $1 per hectare, minimum $25,000, is required on government grants, and is returned to the concessionnaire only upon the fulfillment of stipulated terms of the law. Rentals, increasing progressively from 10c per hectare per year the first two years to 50c per hectare the sixth year, are required up to the start of the production period (beginning of development). The concession terminates 30 years after the beginning of the production period and can be extended for 10 years more at the option of the contractor. Wells must be produced at no less than 25 per cent of their maximum capacity. Royalties on oil from national lands vary from 2 to 11 per cent of the gross product, depending on the distance of the concession from the port of loading. Chemical methods, based on the relative rates of oxidation of fusain, bright coal, and dull coal by nitric acid, have been devised to determine these coal components.1-4 Results obtained by oxidation methods for fusain have been checked against results obtained from microscopic methods on duplicate samples of the same coals, but to the author's knowledge this has not been done for bright and dull coal components. For this reason it is not certain that the two methods of analysis identify essentially the same chemical or physical units. It would be highly desirable to see results of the application of both methods to duplicate samples, but in the absence of any such data the author has attacked the problem indirectly. From the U. S. Bureau of Mines samples were obtained of three Alabama coals which the USBM had analyzed optically and reported on over the past 30 years. These samples were subjected to analyses by oxidation rate methods. Results of this work, and comparisons with the USBM analyses, have been published. This was the first indirect approach to the problem. The present report attempts a second indirect approach by way of internal validation.

A dynamic simulation model for the iron blast furnace has been developed which predicts flow rates, compositions, and temperatures of the top gas, slag, and hot metal exit streams as a function of time from specification of the time-dependent tuyere inputs and raw material charges. As a matter of convenience, a previously developed steady- state model is employed to fix furnace-dependent parameters. It also provides initial conditions for the internal states of the furnace for subsequent dynamic solution of the simultaneous differential equations which describe the local rates of chemical reaction, heat transfer, and mass transfer in the stack, bosh, combustion zone, and hearth of the furnace. The dynamic model was tested by a demonstration of its ability to relax to steady-state representations of the time-averaged data from two separate industrial blast furnaces and of its ability to follow eight days of time-dependent operating data for one of them. Simulated responses to step changes in tuyere input and burden variables have been shown to be of the correct magnitude and duration. Although complex functions of many variables, a proper description of these responses is needed for the development of optimization and control strategies . The model correctly predicts the non-minimum-phase type dynamic response observed in real furnaces in which the output variables proceed through local minima or maxima, often including inverse responses (i.e., opposite signs from their final steady-state values ) .

Members: A person to be eligible for election or transfer into the class of Member must be at least 27 years of age and must have had at least six years' employment in the practice of engineering, mining, geology, metallurgy, or chemistry, during at least three years of which he must have held positions of responsibility in one or more of these fields. This shall not apply to Rocky Mountain Members.

THE oil-producing districts of Kansas comprise the northern portion of the so-called Mid-Continent field. As shown in the accompanying map, these districts are located chiefly in the southeastern and south central parts of the state. A considerable area in southeastern Kansas, extending northward nearly to Kansas City, has long been known as oil territory, the productive wells being distributed in patches or spots' of irregular size and shape, the location of which is controlled by conditions of rock structure, and by the texture and porosity of the "sands" beneath: the surface. In south central Kansas, there are a number of producing fields, the location of which appears to be controlled chiefly by well-defined structure. The most important districts are those in Butler County, especially that in the vicinity of El Dorado, which was for a time the most productive district in the entire Mid-Continent field. Recently new production of importance has been brought in the vicinity of Peabody and present development is active to the north across Marion County. Tests in the western parts of Kansas have not been successful in finding new petroleum fields. HISTORY The first well drilled for petroleum, in Kansas, was near the town of Paola, Miami Co., about 40 mi. southwest of Kansas City, in the summer of 1860, only a few months after the completion of the famous "Colonel Drake discovery well in Pennsylvania. Kansas appears to be the second state to engage in a serious attempt to find oil by drilling. The Civil War caused the temporary abandonment, of attempts at oil development in the state.
