A mathematical model d1.20p/4L = A(8v)8 derived from the Blasius equation is proposed to be applicable to turbulent flow through straight cylindrical pipe for time-independent fluids which produce a diameter family of straight parallel lines on a log (dp/4L) vs log (8v/d) plot or stress-flow diagram. Such a correlation should permit scale-up with data taken from one pipe diameter for Newtonian, inelastic non-Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids, such as dilute polymer fracturing fluids, which produce considerable frictional pressure reductions. The Newtonian diameter exponent value 1.20 is shown to be empirically valid for turbulent non-Newtonian flow by application of numerical analysis methods. Multiple regression analysis is applied to a logarithmic linearization of the proposed model. An improved data fit results from further linearization achieved by taking linear terms from a generalized Taylor's series expansion about the multiple regression coefficients. Extensive experimental data obtained in five pipe diameters with water, sodium carboxymethyl-celIulose solutions, guar gum solutions, bentonite clay suspensions and calcium carbonate slurries are presented. Except for calcium carbonate slurries, which were investigated rather than time-dependent cement slurries, the fluids studied contain drilling or fracturing fluid additives. The behavior exhibited by these fluids is considered typical of most fluids encountered in drilling, cementing and fracturing operations. INTRODUCTION Considerable difficulties have been encountered in predicting turbulent flow pressure drops produced by non-Newtonian fluids flowing through straight cylindrical pipe. Correlations previously presented require extensive experimental data which represent several pipe diameters and a wide flow rate range to estimate the necessary scale-up parameters.l-7 One must implement either elaborate experimental apparatus or spend considerable time and effort to gather these data. Presented here is a correlation method which should minimize the experimental effort and data analysis normally required by utilizing flow data taken with only one pipe diameter. Turbulent flow data (up-stream and down-stream pressure and volumetric flow rates) were collected for five pipe diameters through operation of a small pipeline system having an electronic data acquisition and digitizing system. A mathematical model derived from the Blasius equation was utilized to describe the functional relationship between pressure drop and the two independent variables, diameter and average flow velocity. A correlation, which should produce a valid single-pipe scale-up, resulted from a computer-implemented statistical and numerical data analysis for several time-independent non-Newtonian fluids.

A severely technical article, however well written, can not be an agreeable form of literature. It suffers from the defects of its qualities. One defect is a congestion of language, due to a multiplicity of adjectival nouns. The sentences are packed with words of unpleasing sound, charged with complex ideas, crowding one another so closely that the phraseology moves like an ice-pack in Bering Sea or a log-drive in a river; the undercurrent of meaning may continue to move, but the surface is obstructed. This verbal congestion is made evident by ugly compoundings, many of which are adopted by the technical writer in the mistaken belief that they give directness to his statements. Br far the greater number of the members of this Institute are men who are engaged in the strenuous work of the technical part of their profession, and find little time for the abstract scientific work which is less distinctly practical and pecuniarily emunerative. There is, however, a small but increasingly numerous class whose members devote themselves to broad geological problems which underlie the systematic development, and whose work, theoretically, ought to precede and form a basis of that of their more practical brethren. These are the so-called mining or economic geologists, who are, for the most part, connected with State or National geological surveys. From the character of their work, the life of these men necessarily follows rather different line's than that of most of their colleagues, and is not generally familiar to them. It seems admissible, therefore, that to the life of a prominent member of this class, who died during the past year, having literally sacrified his life to his work, a more extended notice should be given than the relatively small number of his contributions to the Transactions might seem to justify. George Romans Eldridge, son of Ellery and Sarah (Mathews) Eldridge, was born on Cape Cod at Yarmouth, Mass., Christmas day, 1854. His boyhood education in the public school at Yarmouth was followed by a six years' course in the Public Latin School at Boston, from which lie entered Harvard Uni¬versity in 1872, being graduated with the highest rank in his class in the natural sciences in 1876. During his college course he spent the summers of 1875-6 at Cumberland Gap, Ky., as volunteer aid to Prof. N. S. Shaler, who was then in charge of the State Geological Survey of Ken¬tucky. These springs arc situated on the south bank of the river about four miles below the City of Great Falls. In addition to the spring on the bank there are several in the bed of the river. Estimates on the flow of all these vary from 350 to 600 cubic feet per second, and as the temperature is practically constant at 53° F. throughout the year, the effect on the river water is to prevent the formation of anchor ice at the Rainbow Fails power development below, trouble of this source being in evidence every winter at the Black Eagle Falls above. Geologists claim that the water of the Giant Springs is derived from seepage through an old pre-glacial channel of the Missouri River now occupied by Sand Coulee, five miles up-stream from Great Falls. The water in this buried channel seeps through the flat-lying sandstone of the region and again unites with the present stream at the site of the springs.

The presence of radioactivity in uranium mill wastes has resulted in somewhat unique waste disposal methods. In addition to the common problems of disposing of large quantities of solid wastes, neutralizing acids, minimizing dissolved heavy metals, and clarifying all liquid effluents, the uranium mill operator must sample and analyze liquid effluents for micro-micro-quantities of radio- nuclides such as Ra226, Th230, and Pb210. Special disposal methods or decontamination procedures are required to meet the stringent limitations established by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission on the concentration of radionuclides in liquid effluents. Routine monitoring of the receiving stream is also normally required. In recent years there has been a growing concern about the radioactivity remaining in uranium mill tailings, particularly at the sites of shut-down or dismantled mills. The State of Colorado, in cooperation with the industry, has adopted regulations for stabilization of inactive uranium mill tailings.

When the National Forests were created, all lands embraced in their boundaries were exempted from all forms of entry, except mineral claims. Later, by Act of June 11, 1906, and as amended by Act of Aug. 10, 1912, provision was made allowing homesteads on areas chiefly valuable for agriculture and not necessary for the public use. Patents to mining claims in the Forests are granted the same as on land not in the Forests, irrespective of timber or other values. It is the policy to encourage the highest use of the Forests. As a business proposition, it is a good policy to have mines developed in the Forests. Their development in remote or inaccessible regions causes the country to be opened up and, in addition to the local market which the mines create, means of transportation are afforded to outside markets. No examination of mining claims is made until patent has been applied for, unless they are actively interfering with the administration of the Forest. In this case, an examination is made, and if there is evidence that the claims are being held in good faith they are in no way interfered with. Timber is never sold from a mining claim except with the consent of the claimant, or unless it is clearly shown, after an examination, that the claim is abandoned. In the case of fire-killed timber, which rapidly deteriorates by standing, a contract bond arrangement can be made for the sale of the timber which protects the interests of both the mining claimant and the government. The promiscuous locating of mining claims has in the past caused considerable trouble. It has been, and still is, the custom in some parts of the West to locate a mining claim when the surface rights of any particular area are desired, irrespective of the mineral character of the ground. This has been done to hold power sites, town sites, summer residences, springs, etc. When the ground is desired for any of these purposes, what is known as a Special Use Permit will be issued at a nominal sum, to legalize the occupancy. In most instances, it is far cheaper to take out one of these permits than to do the annual assessment work on a mining claim, but, of course, patent to the ground cannot be obtained in this manner. IN the early days of Colorado mining, between 1880 and 1900, when Leadville, Kokomo, and Robinson were boom mining camps, the entire area around Climax for a matter of fifteen miles was overrun with prospectors, so the mineralized outcrop at Climax was not unknown. The principal interest in minerals during this period was in gold, silver, and lead, and since the Climax outcrop showed none of these it drew little attention. Geology played an important part in bringing prospectors to the very edge of the Climax deposit. The Mosquito fault, which crosses near the base of Bartlett Mountain, continues as an important geological structure, at least as far as Leadville some twelve miles distant, and at the base of Bartlett Mountain the vertical throw on the fault is estimated to be between 2000 and 5000 ft. The sedimentary beds known to the Leadville district are all present on Bartlett Mountain to the north of the Mosquito fault, which cuts them off abruptly, and exposes the Pre-Cambrian rocks that underlaid them, so the prospectors, who were searching for gold, silver, and lead in the sediments

Measurements have been made of carbon diffuswn in the five ternary austenites Fe-C-Si, Fe-C-Ni, Fe-C-Co, Fe-C-Mn, and Fe-C-Cr in which the carbon (component 1) diffuses through interstitial sites and the ternary addition (component 2) diffuses substitutionally. Values of the diffusion-coefficient ratio, D12/D11 were determined for each system with finite couples using the transient equilibrium method. The effect of temperature and of concentrations of both the carbon and substitutional component upon D12/D was examined and was found to agree with the theoretical predictions. It is concluded that within an experimental uncertainty of 10 to 15 pct, it is possible to calculate the ratio D12/D11 from purely thermody-namic data. Difficulties of measuring the other off-diagonal coefficient, 4,, are discussed. Any quantitative attack on the fundamentals of the hardenability problem in steel must begin with the multicomponent diffusion formalism and with the accumulation of data pertaining thereto. In a recent paper Kirkaldy and purdy 1 employed the formalism derived from irreversible thermodynamics to treat the problem of diffusion in ternary austenites. In the latter solutions, carbon diffuses through interstitial sites and the substitutional component diffuses through the lattice. Examples were given of diffusion in the systems Fe-Mn-C and Fe-Si-C. In the present paper, we present new results on and discuss their agreement with the thermody-namic theory. Since the theory has been slightly modified from the original presentation of Kirkaldy and Purdy, their results on Fe-Si-C and Fe-Mn-C have been recalculated and are presented here for completeness. The flux of the interstitial component with respect to a fixed lattice framework can be written as a linear expansion in the independent concentration gradients, where X1 and X2 are the independent thermody-namic forces in the lattice fixed frame of reference. These forces can be obtained from the general statement for forces in a volume fixed frame2 if the partial molar volume of carbon atoms is set equal to zero and that of the substitutional component 2 is set equal to unity, viz where the are the chemical potentials and the N's are mole fractions. Introducing into [3] and [4] the function If, as suggested by statistical arguments, the off-diagonal interaction L12 is sufficiently small, [6] reduces to i.e., the coefficient ratio becomes purely thermo-dynamic. Sladek, (Ontario Research Foundation, Toronto, and Institute for the Study of Metals, Chicago, respectively)—This interesting paper confirms some results obtained some years ago in collaboration with Fast: namely the broadening of the nitrogen peak by the presence of small amounts of manganese. Later on a more extensive study of this effect was made at the Institute for the Study of Metals at Chicago. As the work has not yet been submitted for publication we wish to mention here briefly some of the results. The effect of about 0.5 atomic pct manganese, chromium, molybdenum, or vanadium on the nitrogen-peak in iron was examined. The broadening found previously in the case of manganese was even found to be more pronounced for chromium. In the case of molybdenum and vanadium a double peak was observed which seemed to justify the idea that in all cases mainly two relaxation times were involved: namely, the normal relaxation time as found in pure iron and a second relaxation time related to the existence of abnormal interstitial lattice sites introduced by the foreign metallic element. The analysis showed that for the normal nitrogen-peak as a reference at 22°C the abnormal peak was found at about 32°, 47°, 75°, and 87°C in the case of manganese, chromium, molybdenum, and vanadium, respestively. In the manganese alloy the free energy difference for a nitrogen-atom at an abnormal and a normal lattice site was estimated at 2800 cal per mol. This means that for temperatures above 100°C the solid solubility and overall diffusion rate of nitrogen is not much affected by additions of 0.5 pct Mn. We believe that the difference in rate of precipitation of nitrogen in pure iron and the manganese alloy is mainly a question of the number of potential nuclei available in the different steels. In studying the effect of these alloying elements on precipitation of nitrogen, a distinction must be made between the para reaction and ortho reaction, using terminology introduced by Hultgren.7 The ortho reaction in which the alloying metallic element participates in the diffusion under formation of nitrides occurs at high temperatures such as 600°C. The para reaction in which the alloying metallic element does not diffuse and in which the nitride inherits its alloy content from the matrix occurs at lower temperatures. To prevent the ortho reaction the alloys have to be quenched rapidly from the phase. It is not surprising that the authors find that the height of the peak indicates a lower nitrogen content than chemical analysis. In the first place the peak is not a single relaxation peak and secondly, the steels were not quenched from the phase after the nitrogen was introduced at 580 °C.

The mine and concentrator of the Howe Sound Co., Chelan Division, are at Holden, in a remote section of the Cascade Mountains of northwestern Washington. Holden is at an elevation of 3200 ft., in the narrow valley of Railroad Creek. This creek drains into Lake Chelan, at a point some 40 miles up the lake from the town of Chelan. The concentrator treats 2000 to 2500 tons of low-grade copper-gold-zinc ore per day. Concentration is achieved by the differential flotation process, with recovery of 94 per cent copper and 82 per cent gold in the copper concentrate, followed by the recovery of 65 to 70 per cent zinc in the zinc flotation circuit. The final flotation tailing is deslimed, and coarse . sands, representing 60 to 70 percent of the total, are cyanided. The tonnage of tailing material amounts to 1900 to 2370 tons per day. General Considerations The property is within the Chelan National Forest. Railroad Creek is a fishing stream, being stocked regularly with trout from State hatcheries. Consequently, in planning a milling operation, the Howe Sound Co. was obliged to avoid any pollution of the stream by tailing material, and also destruction of valuable stands of timber. Moreover, the selected tailing- disposal sites should not mar the natural beauty of the valley. In addition to these requirements, the problem of tailing disposal at Holden was complicated by topography and climatic conditions. The valley is long and narrow, averaging 1200 to 1500 ft. in width. Its walls are flaring at a steep angle. There are no extensive flat areas suitable for deposition of tailing. All valleys tributary to Railroad Creek, also the well-marked paths of snowslides, must be avoided. Finally, the direction of prevailing winds and possible dust hazard arising therefrom dictated the necessity of selecting the tailing-disposal sites downstream from the mill building and two campsites. Heavy snowfall during the winter months of November to March, inclusive, impedes building of the retaining dike, making it necessary to prepare the needed storage space during the summer months. It is inadvisable, also, to do any dike building during the freezing weather, because the dike becomes unstable with the spring thaws, producing inevitable "sloughing" of the built-up borders. Tailing-disposal Sues The existing tailing-disposal areas are near the south wall of the valley. They were developed, and put to use in the following sequence: No. I. Area.—Covers approximately 10 acres. Built up to the height of 60 ft. and abandoned. Total length of dike border is 1900 feet.

THE Chairman of the Iron and Steel Division for 1945 is one of the most versatile and best-known men in this industry, with wide experience in research and operations and in handling both the men and the materials that are used in enormous quantities. Erle G. (Doe) Hill was born in Santa Ana, (alit, April 21, 1890 and graduated (Bachelor of Science) in mining and metallurgy from the University of California in 1913. For the next five years lie held a variety of jobs as miner, foreman, and null superintendent in gold, silver, copper, and quicksilver mines in the West and in Mexico. As Doe was an individual endowed with an exceptional amount of horse sense, he left the West in 1918, to become instructor of mining engineering and ore dressing at Carnegie Institute of Technology, and while in that post did considerable consulting work as a geologist and mining engineer. In 1920, still possessing the same common sense. he got out of mining engineering and geology and became associate professor of metallurgy at the University of Pittsburgh, a position he retained for nearly ten years.

The object of crushing and grinding for leaching is obviously to permit contact of the solvent and mineral and subsequent removal of pregnant solution in a reasonable time. Heap leaching is the leaching of ores that have been mined and transported to prepared, relatively impervious pads for leaching by sprinkling or ponding, and percolation of the lixiviate through the ore. Dump leaching is the leaching of dumps or low-grade ore or overburden without the use of prepared pads under them. Run-of-mine material, e. g., low -grade ore from open pit stripping operations, may be leached without crushing, and a fairly high recovery made by heap leaching. An alternate method for better grade gold/silver ores is to crush to 9 to 13 mm (318 to112 in. ) size for pad heap leaching, as used by Smoky Valley Mining Company at Round Mountain, Nevada, on gold ore, and to 38 rnrn (1 -1 12 in.), which will be done by Candelaria Partners, at Candelaria, Nevada, on silver ore. Heap leaching of copper probably began at Rio Tinto, Spain, about the year 1752. This was done by the leaching of weathering piles of ore in the open air followed by iron cementation of the liquor that drained off the heaps. Its application to the low -grade southwestern United States copper ores was overlooked for many years, and low- grade ores from Sacramento Hill at Bisbee, Arizona, were the first to be heap leached in 1923. Site preparation used a half century ago is the same today. "The need for some form of waterproofing of the pad was evident. Before leaching ore was piled, the site was cleared of cactus and brush. After clearing a gentle sloping area, it was then covered with a blanket of rolled and tamped clay or slime tailing. When heaps are built, a layer of coarse fragments may be put down first to assist drainage. A second method of leaching without grinding, usually for higher grade ores, is by vat or tank leaching of material crushed to 9 to 13 mm (318 to 112 in.) size. Such a plant is considerably more expensive than a heap leaching installation but much less costly than grinding for agitation leaching, and a recovery higher than that obtained by heap leaching is to be expected. Vat leaching has been widely used by the copper industry on higher grade copper ores but has been used in only a few small operations on that size gold or silver ores. However, such a plant should be considered for a modest tonnage of a few million tons, 3 to 7 g per mt (0.10 to 0.20 oz per st), of Carlin-type leachable ores crushed to 9 mm (318 in.).

INTRODUCTION One basic design feature utilized in all caving and sublevel stoping techniques is the drawpoint. These draw- points may be located on sublevels when using sublevel caving methods, or may be located at the floor pillar when using block caving, sublevel stoping, or vertical crater retreat methods. How the drawpoint is designed and developed, how the ore is withdrawn from it, and how the ore is hauled to the shaft or portal encompasses the loading and hauling function. Historically, predominate loading and hauling equipment for caving and sublevel stoping has been scraper slushes, air powered overshot loaders, and rail mounted train haulage. All of this equipment has two common constraints. 1. The equipment locked into specific work sites and is not easily shifted to another work site. This constraint can often lead to low utilization and low productivity of the equipment. 2. The equipment is designed to work in the horizontal plane, which requires that the various horizontally-oriented working levels be connected by vertical raises. Vertical development by means of raises is not only increasingly expensive, but also is not well adapted to movement of large equipment into the s topes. In the last 20 years, two revolutionary labor saving concepts have become common in caving and sublevel stoping. 1. Long-hole drilling, which has mechanized the development of the drawpoint extraction structures as well as the actual stoping and undercutting. 2. Vertical access by means of trackless ramps between levels, and the consequent use of rubber-tired vehicles not only for loading and hauling ore, but also for the rapid movement of men, material, and equipment into the stopes. The introduction of trackless mining systems for loading and hauling has not been easy. Mine planners have had to re-orient their thinking to the larger operating space required by trackless equipment. Larger access drifts have necessitated reconsideration of mine layouts to insure proper ground support. Spiral ramp developments were often laid out on slopes steeper than the equipment could negotiate economically. Mine operators had to accept the added responsibility of roadway maintenance, water removal, increased ventilation, and more technical mechanical maintenance. As the mine operators enthusiastically embraced the superior productivity of trackless mining systems, they some- times disregarded opportunities to combine the older types of equipment with trackless vehicles to maximize productivity at lowest cost. In order to gain a proper perspective on this problem, it is necessary to review the various techniques of loading and hauling and to become more aware of the advantages or disadvantages that each system or combination contributes. LOADING Loading consists of two functions, (1) primary loading from a drawpoint and (2) secondary loading into long- haul system, a truck, train, or possibly a belt conveyor. Mine planners have four basic loading systems available to fit various operating conditions. These are, (1) gravity, (2) scrapers, (3) rail-mounted loaders, and (4) trackless loaders. Each system can produce optimum results under specific conditions. Gravity Loading Gravity loading is probably the oldest system in general use today.

This paper presents some of the problems encountered and solved by the construction industry during recent years while pressure grouting the foundation rock of dams. Pressure grouting has become "Standard Operational Procedure" and consequently many hundreds of thousands of bags of cement have been used for that purpose. There is nothing weird, mystical, or even particularly difficult about the basic idea. Holes are drilled in the rock and grout is pumped into them. This procedure is used to shut off the flow of water under the dam and to reduce the uplift on the dam. Like most other engineering and construction problems, the fundamental principle is simplicity itself, but some of the "minor details" are rather complex. When faced with the problem of actually forcing the grout into the rock, or keeping it there once it has been injected, an engineer frequently has need for all of the ingenuity and initiative that he has at his disposal. It is proposed to discuss these minor details at length, even at the risk of boring the reader. The difference between success and failure in a grouting program can well hinge upon some such detail that may not be fully understood. Pressure grouting is a method used to make good foundations from bad ones by plugging actual or potential passages within the rock through which water might escape and thereby diminish or even destroy the usefulness of the dam. In some special cases, pressure grouting has been used for the purpose of consolidating broken rock to increase its bearing power. Lacking this useful method, many of the dams constructed during recent years could not have been built. Most of the really excellent dam sites in this country have been utilized long ago. Consequently it becomes necessary to find methods of utilizing the less desirable sites. Pressure grouting plays a vital role in the methods developed. Engineers have learned the hard way, that the term "solid rock" is a misnomer. Solid rock does not exist to any considerable extent in nature. Practically all rock contains imperfections such as shrinkage cracks, bedding planes, joints, solution channels, folds, shear zones, crush zones, and the like. All these imperfections are weaknesses through which ground water is likely to flow. The function of rock grouting is to rectify these imperfections and make the rock as nearly "solid" as practicable. The location, direction, depth and number of grout holes to be drilled are important. Clearly, a hole must pierce fractures in order to serve a useful purpose, for grout cannot be forced into the rock itself. Were it possible to determine the pattern and extent of the cracks within the rock, it might be feasible to drill two or three strategically placed holes so as to make practicable the grouting of the whole integrated network of cracks from them. Such is not the case. While a study of the geology, surface indications, and drill cores is helpful in gaining an idea of subsurface conditions, in the final analysis, the seams must be located by trial and error methods. A description of the methods used in driving two tunnels, 2 miles long each, one a 9-ft. and the other a 19-ft. diameter section, for the Owyhee Irrigation Project, Oregon. One heading of the smaller tunnel was driven 1315 ft. in 73 shifts in one month and 10,966 ft. of this section completed in ll½ months using two shifts for eight months and three shifts the rest of the time. This is a good illustration of the proper use of a mechanical shovel and the importance of careful selection of supplernentary equipment to secure best results. Large cars, speedier and heavier locomotives, 36-in. gage track of 45-lb. rail, and a good switching method increased actual shoveling time and cut down muck removal period about 45 minutes from average. The larger tunnel, after trying out standard electric revolving shovels of both the rail mounting and caterpillar tread types, was excavated with a mechanical mucker. This is the first time that a tunnel of so large a section has been handled this way. This record work was accomplished without drill carriages.

ONE of the perplexing problems that face the translator of an old technical treatise is the question of terms for units of weight and measure. We have used an English word only when it is linguistically equivalent to the Italian one and is a unit of approximately the same size. Libbra and oncia thus become pound and ounce, for the actual weights were within 10 per cent of the modem Troy weights. On, the other hand, the length measures braccio, palmo, and dito, which could be rendered literally as arm, palm, and finger or digit, respectively, have no good English metrological equivalents and it has seemed best to retain the Italian words. The exact transfer of Biringuccio's weights and measures into modern terms is impossible because of the uncertainty as to his standards. Even as late as 1803, when the metric system was first introduced into Italy, practically every city had its own standards. There were, for example, at least eight different palmi, varying from 22.3 to 29.2 centimeters. The values listed below for the various units mentioned by Biringuccio are the Florentine ones, which were also used in Siena and Tuscany: [ ]
