Development of electrical power in coal mining has been an outstanding example of adaptbility. It has accommodated itself to new inventions, changing mining methods, increasing demands, increasing safety requirements and many other new conditions. With the appearance of the continuous miner in the mining machinery picture, those engineers interested in the application of electricity to mining have been thinking about what new comination of electrical apparatus will best suit this newcomer. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the relative costs of supplying d-c versus a-c power to mining equipment with particular reference to continuous miner setups. Assume that a-c power will be delivered to the mine at some high voltage suitable for transmision to the various substation locations. Typical voltage for this purpose is 4000 volts. The problem then is to change the power to some kind of power suitable for driving the motors of mining equipment. For safety and other reasons the voltage to be delivered to the motor terminals must be under 600 volts.

My bets are on you, every time! But who is right? In the "cobalt issue" of our favorite magazine, January 1951, you stated: "By far the best immediate United States prospect for, large amounts of cobalt is the Blackbird mine of the Calera Mining Co., which is operating for Howe Sound Co., in Leinhi County, Idaho." In the March 1 issue of Saturday Evening Post, Ernest F. Mechlin, Jr., chief cobalt section, National Production Authority, states: "The Bethlehem Steel Co.'s Cornwall, Pa. ore bed is the principal domestic source." Maybe he should have said: "was the principal domestic source", or perhaps Howe Sound's Idaho cobalt is still in the prospect stage in Mr. Mechlin's opinion, perhaps in yours too. KATHARINE W. Corneille S. Ek (Assistant Professor in Ore Dressing, University of Liege, Liege, Belgium) — This is a very valuable paper, in that it shows how it is possible to take care of a multitude of laboratory routine tests, and derive from them successful modifications of flowsheets or of operating methods. The author and the Company appear to be test-minded and this is best seen through the case histories described. There are however some corrections to be made, and questions arise when one studies the paper. If all the equations are to be homogenous, one obviously has to write Eq. 4 On the other hand, it is difficult to accept the definition put on Eq. 7, for that equation, which represents the factor of transformation from tpd of solids to cu ft per min of pulp in Eq. 6, has nothing to do with conditioning. It is evidently assumed here that conditioning means, as Gaudin calls it,' modulation of collection. One would prefer, for Eq. 7, the appel-ation "pulp conversion factor". Kennecott Copper's Chino mine is one of the oldest copper mines in the United States, having been operated by the Spaniards as early as 1800. At that time haulage methods were indeed primitive. Indians brought the ore up on "chicken ladders" in leather buckets. It was then melted into crude bars and hauled to Chihuahua by mule train. There are still remnants of the old trails near the present pit where the mule hooves cut grooves in solid rock. The mines were worked as underground operations off' and on until open-pit mining was started in 1910 by John Sully and Daniel C. Jackling. Since that time many haulage methods have been used: mule carts, steam and electric trains and finally large haulage trucks, now believed to be the best method for this mine. The general shape of the pit is oval with dimensions of 1% miles by 1% miles. Working benches are 50 ft high, with the bottom bench at 5750 ft and the top at 6450 ft above sea level.

There are few disasters so difficult to deal with as an underground fire. It is inaccessible at best, and generally unapproachable ; and it finds most material in the very places where it can do most harm, namely, in large stopes and in " heavy " ground where timbers are massed, and in shafts and level-stations where there are inevitably strong drafts to make the burning yet more fierce. The fire constituting the subject of this note occurred in the shaft of the Standard mine at Bodie, California, and originated after the departure of the night-force at 3 a.m., being discovered by the men going to work at 6.30. At that time it had gained already considerable headway, and was throwing smoke plentifully from the collar of the shaft. It must be premised, for understanding of the situation, that in this shaft all hoisting is done to the 320-foot level, where the material is dropped by chutes 30 feet. to the tunnel-level, through which it is run to the mill. MANY excellent papers, descriptive of the milling and smelting of every kind of commercial ores, the refining of virgin metals, the casting into various shapes demanded by the trade, the rolling into shapes best suited to the factory machinery and the making of composition alloys to suit every requirement have been issued by the many technical societies dealing with non-ferrous metals. It is a wonderful collection of papers, of which the mining and metallurgical engineers may well be proud, but strange as it may seem, metallurgists in general appear to take the stand that when they have delivered suitable alloys to the foundry and rolled products to the factory their duty to write papers has ceased, at least in so far as the A. I. M. E. is concerned. Still we read in the daily papers that the mining companies are absorbing metal-manufacturing industries. The purpose of this paper is to describe the reclaiming of non-ferrous scrap metals at manufacturing plants, taking as an example the automobile industry.

ALEXANDER BURRELL Alexander Burrell, general manager of the Furnace Creek Oxide Copper Mining Co., and' a member of the Institute for 20 years, died suddenly at the Argo mine on Feb. 13, 1917. Mr. Burrell was one of the best known mining men in Montana. He was horn at Edinburgh, Scotland, Jan. 14, 1851, and came to Chicago with his parents in 1856. His father, who was a coppersmith, died soon after their arrival, and the ,son had few opportunities to gain an education in school, but was a natural student and was possessed of a liberal education acquired through self-teaching and through his constant reading and studying, particularly along scientific lines. It was this technical knowledge both of mining, and business, as well as his experience in the practical side of mining and his ability as an executive that won for him a high place in mining circles in Montana. The pre-production interval, beginning with the recognition of an orebody's best potential and ending with significant production, contains time-dependent conditions well appreciated by miners but not always understood or appreciated by the landowners, investors, and legislators with whom a miner must deal. The expression persists, even outside of Western fiction, that someone has "found a mine." From a slightly more knowledgeable position, the question is asked "How long does it take to make a mine?" and an all-encompassing answer is expected. By scanning the discovery and development history of hundreds of mines and rejecting those which involve rehabilitation or expansion of older mines, some generalizations can be attempted. It should be kept in mind that while physical conditions involving the geology of the orebody and the geographic surroundings do not change markedly with time, technologic and economic conditions do change from year to year. The new methods, facilities, markets, land tenure, and politics form a pattern in which today's mines are made and which do sometimes modify the pre-production interval.

The last crop of graduates from our colleges and universities who sought employment in the mineral industries found that they needed to hustle to find a job. There was no longer a list of waiting employers to choose from. Some of them became discouraged and drifted into other fields; many are still looking for employment. Word has gotten around that there are no jobs available in the mineral industries, and enrollment in the various colleges of mines and mineral industries has started to drop. Even established professional men are finding themselves suddenly out of work because of unstable metal prices and rising costs. All these people-students beginning to search for a career, young engineers not yet established-face the same problem: "What is the future of the mineral industries, and what type of training will best qualify the scientist or engineer for this changing field?" This question was posed to a number of leaders in different phases of the industry. Their comments are summarized as a guide to those considering a career in the finding, extraction, or beneficiation of mineral products.

HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. As part of an effort to provide basic data on the fundamental scientific and engineering principles of minerals beneficiation, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the flocculation of mineral fines. This paper presents results of studies using cross-linked starches containing carboxyl, diethanolamine, iminodiacetic acid, and xanthate groups to flocculate hematite, goethite, chromite, manganite, pyrolusite, cuprite, and cassiterite fines. The carboxyl and xanthate derivatives flocculated all minerals except cassiterite; the latter was flocculated by only the diethanolamine derivative. The imlnodiacetic acid derivative flocculated hematite, goethite, chromite, cuprite, and pyrolusite fines. Zeta potential measurements were made to help define the reaction mechanism responsible for flocculation. These measurements indicate that electrostatic attraction probably is not involved, except possibly in the case of the diethanolamine derivative. The separation of hematite from quartz by selective flocculation with chelating crosslinked starches under two pH conditions and with two dispersing agents is described. Best recoveries and grades were found when either the carboxyl or xanthate derivatives was added at the natural pH of the pulp in the absence of a dispersing agent.

As political tensions in African and Asian mineral producing regions increase, the orientation of Latin America's economic development assumes importance not only in the U.S. hemispheric policy but also in our mineral-based economy. Latin America as a mineral supply source has been confronted with regional, political and economic problems which may, at best, have limited further investment and, at worst, have suggested possible repudiation of existing investments. Historically, the mining industry has provided a basis for the national economies of Bolivia, Chile and Peru, and recently the governments of these countries have sought to force increased development of the industry through new and somewhat revolutionary mineral legislation. The extent to which the mineral industries are intended to finance economic development is uncertain and the influence of this legislation on economic freedom and incentive for foreign and domestic investment is a matter for some thought. Two facts are outstanding: first, mining, at present, provides approximately 80% of the foreign exchange in Chile and Bolivia and 42% of that in Peru and, second, existing tax revenues are insufficient to finance a developing economy.

IN 1948 the U. S. Bureau of Mines began a three- phase program to evaluate the extent and quality of U. S. coking coal: 1) a factual appraisal of known recoverable reserves in beds of mineable thickness, 2) a study of preparation characteristics, and 3) a study of carbonization properties. A previous paper presented the methods used in assessing reserves.' Although this investigation is only partly completed, data on coking properties of the Pittsburgh district coals are now available. The results are presented in this article. When coals are selected for manufacture of metallurgical coke more factors must be considered than for any other major use, as no basic industry requires coal of such high quality and uniformity. This is particularly true in the Pittsburgh district, where blast furnace practice is based on use of cokes from high quality coals. Although it is true that inferior coals are carbonized in other industrial areas, both here and abroad, the Pittsburgh coals are the best economically obtainable in the required tonnages, even though they are not the most desirable for metallurgical use.

The application of geostatistics to coal reserve analysis is discussed. One problem in particular, the selection of the optimum locations for exploratory drill holes, is considered in detail. A new interactive program to help the geologist determine the best locations is described and applied to a specific property. The steps in the process are described and then illustrated using a mine's actual data. First, a variogram is selected based on graphical displayed information from the known sample data. Kriging estimates are made for the region of interest and the blocks within the region. The location of future exploratory drill holes is selected based on the criterion of minimizing the region estimation variance for a given number of exploratory holes. The least number of exploratory holes required to meet a specified upper limit on the regional variance is also determined. The computer generated recommendations for the exploratory drill holes are compared to a manually prepared drilling plan. The post- drilling analysis of the results is compared to the predicted values.

Twenty years ago, the standard voltage for stripping machines was 4160 v and few people even thought of using a higher voltage. It was adequate for the machines of the day, which seldom exceeded 2500 hp, and higher voltages were considered to be too expensive and even dangerous. Then, in 1956, a 4500-hp machine was placed in operation and it was determined, with some reluctance, that it should operate on 7200 v. The next step, to 14,400 v, was taken in 1964 and the latest, but perhaps not final, step was made in 1967, when voltage was increased to 25,000 v. Today, 4160 v is considered almost obsolete and 7200 v is generally considered standard. However, a few mines are using 14,400 v and some eight machines soon will be operating on 25 KV, indicating that the technical and safety problems have been solved and that there must be some merit to the higher voltages. Thus, it is logical to question, "How do I determine the best voltage for my operation?"

One of the world's most respected scientists, Dr. Hans A. Bethe (see box) has concluded that if anything can solve the energy crisis, it will be coal and uranium. "It is an illusion to think that we can solve our problem by energy conservation alone. For the next few years, conservation must play a very important role, but at the same time, we must see and develop all our alternative energy sources," he said. In his series of five lectures on the energy crisis, given at the University of Utah while he was visiting professor there during February 1974, Dr. Bethe examined all the existing and newly proposed energy sources. He very quickly ruled out solar power, wind power, and tidal power. Solar power, he said, would be 3% to 4 times more expensive than nuclear energy and would only make sense in tropical areas; wind power, which could at best produce one-tenth as much energy as solar, is "for the birds;" and tidal power, which can be exploited in only a very few coastal locations, is "for the fish."

During many years of service in the iron and steel industry I have frequently found, as have also many other engineers, that the common devices used for feeding coal into gas-producers are not what they ought to be in order to secure the best economy. The hopper-and-cone so generally used is familiar to all, and a brief study of its action will surely satisfy everybody that this device has several serious faults. In the first place, the charging is intermittent, and depends entirely upon an attendant. When the hopper is frequently emptied, it may work fairly well, but even then it suddeinly discharges into the hot producers a large body of coal, which is often violently converted into gas that rushes into the furnace, and, as the damper for the combustion-air cannot be regulated every time the producer is charged, there will be an excess of gas, which goes up the chimney unburned. Between the chargings the quantity of gas generated decreases, and there will often be an excess of air in the furnace,

The amenability of a given vanadium ore to any given treatment depends largely on the mineralogic combinations of vanadium in the ore. Quantitative data on vanadium mineralogy provide not only an objective basis for selection of proper treatment, but also may eliminate many time-consuming amenability studies whose results are empirical, at best. Vanadium is distributed through the interstices of mineralized sandstone ores in the form of oxidized vanadates, reduced oxides, and silicates. Oxidized vanadates, e.g., carnotite, tyuyamunite, etc., are most readily beneficiated by simple acid leaching. Reduced oxides are more slowly solubilized, but relatively amenable to most acid treatments. The layered silicates, roscoelite, mixed layered mica-montmorillonite, and chlorite, are least amenable to most acid extractions, and constitute an assemblage of vanadium- bearing clays that are common to many sedimentary deposits. Vanadium is combined principally as layered silicates in the clay fractions of many sandstone ores. Mineralogic studies in this paper are largely confined to clay minerals, and to their amenability characteristics in low pH liquors.
