PROGRESS in the general field of nonferrous physical metallurgy during the past .year has been uneventful but healthy. A continued increase is apparent in the number of useful alloys and in the mechanical treatment and heat- treatment of finished metals and alloys nothing can hinder the multiplication of alloys or the diversification of their treatment as knowledge of the behavior of .alloys increases; as ternary and quaternary alloys are better understood, hundreds of new metal combinations with unusual properties may well be expected. Evidence of rapid progress is already at hand.

When Mr. Bailey asked us to present a paper describing our new BOF shop, he requested that we avoid a presentation heavily laden with detail and statistics. Not only have we attempted to do this, but also we have prepared a number of colour slides which, hopefully, will provide you with a graphic conception of the facility. The installation of the BOF facility at the Steel Co. of Canada's Hilton Works was delayed many years because of the remarkable production growth of the oxygen open hearth furnaces in No. 3 shop. However, in mid-1960 it became strongly evident that not only would increased ingot capacity be required, but also that N0.2 shop - with vintage non-oxygen open hearth furnaces - would have to clean its stacks in the near future, or be closed down. A decision to embark on the BOF facility was made in 1967 after an extended period of in-depth planning and assessment of industry trends.

Weaknesses of existing application engineering methods are discussed. The use of pilot plant information and appropriate laboratory testing procedures are reviewed from the point of view of the application design engineer so that the best type of machine can be selected for a proposed installation.

Mississippi has had oil production for only the past six years and natural gas production of minor magnitude since' 1926. The search for oil and gas commenced in 1903 and 1496 wells had been drilled in search of oil and gas up to Jan. 1, 1946. As the year 1945 ended, 659 wells were producing oil and gas from 23 separate reservoirs. The production for the year was 8,353,719,000 standard cubic feet of natural gas measured on a pressure base of 15.025 lb. per sq. in. abs., 15.316,009 bbl. of oil¬field water and 19,093,766 bbl. of crude oil and condensate. Production for the year 1944 was 2,636,067,000 standard cubic feet of gas, 14,979,793 bbl. of salt water and 16,420,346 bbl. of crude oil and condensate.

According to a recently suggested effect of silicon on the re recrystallization textures of high-purity Fe-Si alloys with (111)[112] type rolling textures, the recrystallization texture for a rolled (110)[001] oriented iron crystal probably should be entirely different from that of a (110)[001] oriented 3 pct Si-Fe crystal. Comparative studies of iron and 3 pct Si-Fe crystals, however, show that both have (110)[Ool] recrystallization textures when the rolling textures are the (111)[112] type after reductions in thickness of about 70 pct. Qualitatively the results from the iron crystal are like those of polycrystalline high-purity 3 pct Si-Fe and not like polycrys-talline high-purity iron. The large effect previously noted probably involves unknown impurities or processing variables rather than silicon itself. Some problems on experimental and analytical procedure for a spherical X-ray specimen, which was machined from a laminated composite of sheet specimens, are treated in the Appendix. A possible strong effect of silicon on the textures produced in cold-rolled high-purity Fe-Si (HPFe-Si) alloys during primary recrystallization and normal grain growth was suggested in a recent paper.' All the textures were far from the random-orientation type, but that of iron, or of Fe-Si alloys of low silicon composition, was entirely different from the texture of 3 pct Si-Fe. The same effect was noted for the textures obtained prior to normal grain growth, i.e., for primary recrystallization.2 It is the main purpose of the present paper to provide some clarification of this silicon effect. All the HPFe-Si alloys from zero to 3 pct Si, which were rolled by two or more stages separated by anneals, developed (111)[112] type rolling textures.2 Thus, there was no effect of silicon on the rolling textures. Earlier, Gensamer and Mehl3 also found no effect of silicon on the rolling textures of Fe-Si alloys; they obtained the Kurdjum.ow and Sachs (K-S) rolling texture for iron,4 which is characterized as the three ideal components: (100)[011], (112)[li0], and (111)[112]. There is a difference between the HPFe-Si multiple-stage rolling texture and the K-S single-stage rolling texture, but this is a variable processing effect. Of interest here is the fact that the recrystallization textures from (111) [llZ] type rolling textures were different depending on the amount of silicon in the alloy. There was a relatively strong (110) [001] component in the recrystallization texture of HP 3 pct Si-Fe5,8,2 but no such component in HP 0.6 pct Si-Fe, for example; the recrystallization texture for the latter was two (111) [110] type components and a (111) fiber component 1,2 Several publications have shown that a strong (110) [001] recrystallization texture is derivable from a (111) [112] type rolling texture for 3 pct Si-Fe crystals reduced in thickness by about 70 pct.7-10 Furthermore it appears that the strongest of these (110) [001] recrystallization textures occurred when the orientation of the crystal prior to rolling was (110) [001].7 Barrett and evensoon11 found that the rolling texture of a (110)[001] oriented iron crystal was (111) [llj]. Accordingly, it seemed desirable to determine whether a (110) [001] oriented iron crystal, upon rolling and annealing, would behave like the 3 pct Si-Fe crystal (or the polycrystalline HP 3 pct Si-Fe) and thus produce a (110) [001] recrystallization texture contrary to the suggested silicon effect, or would behave like the polycry stalline HP iron or HP 0.6 pct Si-Fe and thus produce (lll) [110] type components in agreement with a silicon effect. Briefly, the idea here involves the use of more precisely defined textures to obtain if possible better control of important variables that affect the recrystallization process. PROCEDURE A (110) oriented crystal of Ferrovac "E" iron (99.9 pct pure) was prepared in sheet form 0.080 in. thick with the [001] direction parallel to the long dimension of the specimen.'' This crystal was etched to 0.073 in. thickness (to remove some small included grains) and then was cold rolled in a 6-in.-diam mill to a final thickness of 0.022 in. The rolling was unidirectional except for an inadvertent reversal at 0.061 in. thickness. At this thickness, and also at 0.040 in., the rolling was interrupted for transmission Laue photographs. Molybdenum Ka-radiation filtered with zirconium was used in a transmission method1' to obtain the cold-rolled (110) pole figure. The sample was a 0.002-in.-thick section taken from the central region of the 0.022-in.-thick cold-rolled crystal. For the primary recrystallization study, cold-rolled samples were etched from 0.022 to 0.021 in. thick and annealed in hydrogen at 850°C. A formulation is given for radiant heat loss from the surface of molten steel held in a ladle and numerical solutions are presented for the resultant integrodif-ferential equations. The results are shown on plots of the net rate of heat loss against time, with the geometlry, emissivities, thermal properties of the walls, and Preheat as parameters. It was found that the rate of the vadiant heat loss from the exposed metal surface was comparable to the conductive losses from the Portion of the metal in direct contact with the walls. The radiant heat loss was markedly affected by the geometry and by the thermal properties of the walls the net radiant heat loss from the steel could be drastically reduced by providing a top cover and also by the provision of preheat. The results of this work are thought to be relevant to heat loss calculatious concerned with vacuum degassing and with operatzons in which molten metals are held in ladles. WhEN molten steel is held or transferred in ladles heat losses inevitably occur. The accurate assessment of these heat losses is of importance in process design considerations, as the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in certain stages of the processing sequence. As shown in Fig. 1, the principal mechanisms responsible for heat loss are: i) Conduction into the walls and ii) Thermal radation from the top metal surface (possibly augmented by natural convection) The conductive heat loss may be readily calculated as much information is available in the literature on both the general theory1'' and on its particular applications to ladle heat loss calculations. Evaluation of the radiant component of the heat loss is less straight-forward. In two recent papers it has been shown that the presence of a slag layer 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss for periods up to an hour,5'" however, should bare metal be exposed, constituting the radiant surface, substantial heat losses could occur. This latter case is of considerable practical interest in various degassing operations and in the vacuum processing of certain specialty steels, where the top surface of the metal is not covered by a protective slag layer. Under these conditions a substantial radiant flux is emitted by the top metal surface; part of this flux leaves the system, part of it falls in the ladle walls. The radiant flux incident on the ladle walls is in part absorbed and conducted away, and in part reflected and re radiated. The purpose of the paper is to present a general formulation of the problem, the resultant solution of which should enable computation of the net radiant heat loss from the metal surface. The principal variables, the effect of which will be investigated, include initial metal temperature, geometry, thermal and radiative properties of the wall, and various modes of preheat. FORMULATION Consider a cylindrical enclosure, shown in Fig. 2, with a diameter D, height H, and wall thickness W, the cover at the top of the cylinder having a wall thickness L. If the temperature of the base (representing the top surface of the metal) is kept constant, say, Tb, the problem is to calculate the net rate of heat loss from the base as a function of time, geometry, the initial temperature distribution, and the thermal properties of the system. As customary, the formulation will consist of the mathematical statement of the conservation of thermal energy within the system.

Many of the problems that occur in the preparation plant originate from practices in the mine. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or from extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. In the case of underground mines, the choice of mining equipment will affect the size consist and the amount of extraneous material included with the coal. Also, governmental regulations concerning the degree of rock dusting, gobbing underground, and cleanup have increased the dirt in raw coal. Sulfur dioxide emission standards, on the other hand, are pressuring the coal industry to clean coal more thoroughly. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent (Fig. 1) and only incidentally with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 51 to 102 mm (2 to 4 in.), with little, if any, other treatment. JUSTIFICATION FOR COAL PREPARATION During the past decade, major changes have occurred affecting the market, profit, and long-range planning of the coal industry. Mining companies have become "partners" with consumers at many new and some old mines, both for steam and metallurgical coals. Coal properties have become "assigned" tonnages at mutually agreed upon conditions and prices. Lower unit-train tariffs have been instrumental in helping coal markets to compete against oil and nuclear energy. Coal prices for power plants are still on a Btu (British thermal unit)

the leaching of near-by rocks, had had no other result than to bring out from obscurity three certain features of practical lmport, all the labor of that controversy would have been well expended. These three points are : (1) a clear distinction between the vadose and the profound zones; (2) a determination of the manner in which the latter may be invaded by conditions of the former; and (3) an establishment of the general truth of the lateral-secretion theory when vadose conditions prevail, and of the. ascension-theory under profound conditions. In the practical consideration. of ore-deposits these generalizations are fundamental. Their wider application must be productive of great industrial advantages. Of first importance in the broader scientific survey of ore-genesis is the recognition of a sharp distinction between vadose and profound conditions. To many who listened to Professor Posepny's remarkable paper, read at the Chicago session of the Institute during the Columbian Exposition in 1893, this seemed, as Dr. S. F. Emmons has already observed, its most valuable and suggestive feature. Notwithstanding Posepny's implications to the contrary, and his vigorous berating of Sandberger's views, the immediate and lasting .effect of the . argument was really to strengthen greatly Sandberger's position. For it completely and sharply separated the lateral-secretionists from the ascensionists, raising the sphere of the former bodily above the line of permanent water-level and at the same time confining .the sphere of the latter to regions below that horizon. A little later, Professor Van Rise showed in some detail how meteoric waters may deeply invade the profound zone and carry vadose conditions into it. The zonal limitations of two great and apparently opposed agencies being thus definitely fixed, it is found that neither of the theories based thereon is susceptible of general application. If the generalizations of the lateral-secretionist be propounded solely for vadose conditions, we are able to agree with all of his more-important contentions; while there is general acquiescence in the views of the ascensionist if their application be restricted to the profound zone. Published laboratory data have established that very significant streaming potentials can exist across mud cakes subjected to pressure differentials such as exist between a mud column and formation fluids. Since shale is similar in kind and in properties to a well-formed mud cake, it appeared possible that streaming potentials might also arise across shales. A practical consequence would be that the streaming potential contribution to the SP would be smaller than might otherwise be assumed since the SP is measured with respect to the "shale bare line". The resultant contribution would be the difference between the streaming potential across the shale and that across the mud cake. In order to investigate this possibility, a laboratory apparatus was devised for measuring streaming potentials under pressure conditions normally encountered in wells. Reported data on streaming potentids across mud cakes were verified. More important, appreciable streaming potentials were found across shale samples. As in the case of mud cakes, the shale potentials varied with the concentration and nature of the impregnating electrolyte. Dependence on pressure was In a different rela-tion than that for mud cakes, possibly because of the lower compressibility of shales. The differences in streaming potentials between the shales md mud cakes were generally small, although they might vary considerably in practice depending on the relative electro-kinetic properties of the particular shale-mud cuke combination. A "poorly eflective" shale with a "very eflec-tive mud cake" would produce the largest negative addition to the electrochemical component of the SP. Results of field experiments with pressurized wells were considered in the light of the laboratory results. INTRODUCTION Field experiments wherein the pressure of the mud column in a borehole was varied have often indicated the presence of a streaming potential, but its magnitude was not easily predictable and its sign sometimes changed from one formation to another in the same well.' In the interpretation of SP logs from standard surveys, nevertheless, the correct value of R,, is very frequently obtained, within the limits of field accuracy, using only the simple electrochemical expression of the SP provided that proper corrections are made for bed thickness, ion activity, etc.' Accordingly, it was apparent that the streaming potential component of the SP in a borehole was considerably more complex than commonly assumed and clarification was indeed necessary The close similarity in nature and constitution of a shale to a well-compacted mud cake suggested that a streaming potential might also exist across shales as pointed out by M. P. Tixier in 1953 and as recently emphasized by Wyllie." e practical consequence would be that the streaming potential across the mud cake would be canceled, at least in part, on electrical logs since the SP is recorded with respect to the shale potential as a base line. This appeared to be a plausible explanation for many of the effects observed but no supporting data were available. In 1955 preliminary experiments at low pressures were conducted in our laboratories which supported the hypothesis of the shale streaming potential and formed the basis for later studies at borehole pressures.* EARLY LOW PRESSURE EXPERIMENTS The early experiments were conducted primarily to determine the possibility of a streaming potential across shales. The shale used was a compact type designated as No. 7 from Reagan County, Tex. (Permian). Cut samples were saturated for over one month in .2 to 2.0-N NaCl solutions. The various methods based on solution models for obtaining free energies of mixing from miscibility-gap data have been applied to a number of binary-alloy systems. For nine of these systems there exist experimental thermodynamic data that permit a comparison of the results to experiment. It was found that the method of van der Toorn and Tiedema almost invariably leads to results that are physically unacceptable and that vary drastically with small changes in the miscibility-gap parameters. The subregular solution model is found in all cases, except the Al-Zn, Fe-Cr, and Cu-Pb systems, to exaggerate the free energy of mixing by 30 pct or more. The model developed by Lumsden is found to give results that are often in excellent agreement with experiment and which exaggerate the free energy of mixing by no more than 30 pct. These results and others give evidence that the Lumsden treatment of the effect of unequal atomic sizes and of imperfect configurational randomness due to deviations of AB bond energies from the mean of AA and BB bond energies is adequate for most systems. ANALYTIC expressions are frequently proposed for the dependence on composition of the activities of the components of a solution. Because the development of solution theory is incomplete, these expressions contain parameters which must be determined by experiment. The measurement of activities is often difficult and consequently such measurements are less readily available than are measurements of phase equilibria which, under certain conditions, can also be used to evaluate these parameters. For example, suppose it is known that two structurally dissimilar phases, each of known composition, in an n-com-ponent system are at equilibrium at a given temperature and pressure. n equations can be set up in terms of these parameters expressing the equality of the chemical potential of each component in the two phases. In addition, one can write the Gibbs-Duhem equation for each phase that also contains these parameters. Thus, if these n + 2 equations contain n + 2 parameters, these parameters can be determined (at the temperature in question) from the phase diagram alone. If the average number of parameters in each expression for the activity of a given component in a given phase is V then there will be 2nV parameters involved. Equating 2nV to n + 2 shows that, for n + 2, V = 1. If the temperature dependence of each parameter were to be expressed in some explicit form one could use equilibrium conditions at a number of temperatures to increase V. The situation is much improved when the two phases in equilibrium are structurally similar. It can then be assumed that, stably or metastably, two phases will become one at higher temperatures. Thus the number of parameters involved becomes nV instead of 2nV. Hence, V = 2 for n = 2 using only one temperature. (It is implied here that the activity expressions used are valid over the entire composition range.) In this investigation only the equilibrium of two structurally similar, two-component phases (miscibility-gap systems) will be considered. The various proposed solution models will be applied to a number of these systems and the results compared with available experimental results. All of the analytic expressions that have been proposed for the free energy of mixing of a two-component system are of the form where ?Gmix is the free energy of mixing per mole of solution, N1 and N2 are the mole fractions of components 1 and 2, respectively, and f(Ni, T) is some function of composition and temperature. In the "ideal" solution model f = 0. In the "regular" solution model f = a constant. Since these two models permit only a symmetric equilibrium diagram they will not be considered further here. The simplest model that permits a nonsymmetric miscibility envelope is the so-called "subregular" solution model proposed by Hardy.1 This model gives where the Ci(T) are functions of temperature only. The same expression for f is obtained from the "linear a function" model proposed by Darken and Gurry2 and applied to miscibility-gap systems by Wriedt.3 This model requires that the a function defined by be a linear function of composition (yi is the activity coefficient of component i). This model is not purely hypothetical for it has been found2 to hold true for a number of systems. It is readily shown3 that the f(Nl, T) obtained from this model is of the form given in Eq. [2]. It will be noted that the subregular solution model contains only two parameters and hence both of them can be determined at any desired temperature below the critical temperature, Tc, for a miscibility-gap systems in the manner described previously. THE atmosphere, which plays such an important part in the manufacture of iron and steel, is the most variable element involved in its several processes; and particularly is this true of the blast-furnace process, which consumes air in large quantities. At no time since the blast-furnace became an important and widely used apparatus-even when it was operated in the most crude manner-have the variations in composition of the raw materials used been as frequent and as great as the variations in humility of the atmosphere. Important, improvements have been made in the blast furnace and its accessories, such as the hot-blast stoves, the increase in size and change in the shape of the furnace, more efficient blowing engines, the increased protection given to the bosh walls, and the careful preparation of' the raw material, all of which have exerted a pronounced influence on the furnace-operations from a metallurgical standpoint. But during the past eight years little advance has been made in this direction; the fuel-consumption has not diminished, nor has there been any material increase in production. Within that period, however, there has been witnessed the greatest development in appliances for the economical handling of material. So complete has been the work in this direction, that, except in isolated cases, in this country at least., a further extension does not hold out much promise of a satisfactory return on the investment required. It seemed that, with the exception of the gas-engine, we had about reached the limit, for like a strong wall, the atmosphere, with its humility as variable to-clay as when first blown into a primitive blast-furnace, appeared to stand as a Barrier to

A combined process of segregation roasting-flota-tion or magnetic separation was developed to recover nickel from lateritic iron ores and oxidized nickel ores. An ore was mixed with a halide, such as sodium or calcium chloride, and a solid reductant, and roasted, whereby the nickel content was segregated out as discrete metallic particles. Either by magnetic separation, or by flotation using a sulfhydryl collector together with a heavy metal salt as an activator, the metallic nickel could be concentrated, Effects of such variables as the types and amounts of the halide and solid reductant addition and of the roasting conditions were extensively investigated. The concentration results on several types of ores from Japan, the Philippines, and New Caledonia are presented. Laterite is a residual product of rock decay in tropical and subtropical regions, and consists mainly of hydrated oxides of iron and alumina. Those derived from serpentine sometimes become enriched in nickel, cobalt, and chromium contents. Oxidized nickel ores are of the similar origin, but their nickel as well as silica contents are higher due to gamierite-type silicates. Apparently, nickel enrichment is more pronounced in the transition region between the surface layer of iron laterite and the underlying serpentine. Iron laterites often contain over 50% iron, and their reserve is reported to exceed 22 billion tons, corresponding approximately to 20% of the world iron ore reserve.1 It is readily apparent, therefore, why the iron laterites have attracted much attention of the steel industry as a potential source of iron ores. Numerous attempts to remove nickel and chromium as byproducts, have been reported in literature.' Worldwide discoveries of high-grade iron ore deposits in recent years have inevitably lessened the interests in iron laterites. However, in view of the tremendous potential for their gross value and supplies of nickel, cobalt, chromium, and alumina along with iron, the problem remains as a challenge. Much of the chromium in laterites is present in the form of relatively coarse particles of chromite, and various classification methods have successfully been applied for its removal.2,3 The nickel, however, is intimately associated with limonite, and ordinary concentration techniques are totally ineffective. Much attention has, therefore, been given to hydro-metallurgical or pyrometallurgical means. Yet, all the known processes appear to have limitations either economically or for the use of products as iron raw materials due to a high residual content of nickel. Some attempts have been made to pre-roast laterites or oxidized nickel ores, particularly with sulfidizing agents, and to remove nickel either by magnetic separation,' or by flotation.4 It is apparent that any such concentration process would require grain growth of nickel during roasting for effective separation. Oxidized copper ores are reported to be concentrated by the segregation roasting-flotation process,5 in which the ores are roasted with a chloridizing agent and a carbonaceous reductant in order to promote the growth of metallic copper through repeated cycles of copper chloride volatilization and its reduction on the solid reductant surfaces. Examination of a vapor pressure-temperature diagram of various metal chlorides indicates that a separation of nickel from iron may be effected by a similar process. In fact, the segregation roasting of laterites was reported to increase the extraction of nickel by the ammonia leach process, as compared to the ordinary reduction roasting.6 In the present article some of the preliminary experimental results of the segregation roasting, followed by either flotation or magnetic separation, on laterites and oxidized nickel ores are reported. The effects of various parameters in the roasting as well as in the concentration steps are discussed. THE official opening at the 134th general meeting of the Institute was held on Oct. 6, but it was prefaced by two round table conferences on Oct. 5. The open-hearth group held the fourth of their semi-annual conferences at the William Penn Hotel, devoting the morning session to discussing a paper by R. L. Cain on the "Manufacture of Forging Steel by the Open-hearth Process," and the afternoon to discussing P. H. Shaeffer's paper on the open-hearth charge. At the Bureau of Mines, a round table conference on the combustibility of coke was held on Tuesday morning, and the afternoon was devoted to a similar conference on the testing of coke. The formal opening session of the meeting assembled in the Music Hall of Carnegie Institute at 10.30 a. m. Graham Bright, chairman of the Pittsburgh Section; called the meeting to order and presided. President Taylor welcomed the visiting members and guests to his home city and reviewed briefly the advancement of mining in the past half century during which, for ex- ample, the coal output had increased from 53,280,000 tons to 523,357,000 tons per year. He emphasized the important part Pennsylvania played in mining and brought out the principal changes that had taken place in methods. In part, his remarks were as follows: The centennial year, 1876, found the coal business of. this country, as a whole, producing 53,280,000 tons, of which amount the bituminous mines of this State yielded 24 per cent. In 1925, this country produced 523,357,000 tons of coal, of which Pennsylvania produced 24 per cent.

In the present number of Mining and Metallurgy, issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Institute, it appears appropriate to chronicle a few of the interesting incidents respecting its early life. We are fortunate in being able to cull the following notes from unpublished manuscripts of Doctor Raymond and Doctor Drinker, than whom no other members could have written with greater exactness and fidelity. THE seventh decade of the 19th century may be said to have marked an. era in the history of the world. Industrially and .commercially it was marked by the wide application and utilization of discoveries already made, which came to their full effect at this period in steamships, railways, telegraph and cable lines; the standardization of parts in machines, from watches to locomotives; the use of 'dynamite, antiseptic surgery, the open-hearth steel process, the compressed-air rock-drill, the electric generator, and the Gatling gun. Through the opening of the Suez canal in 1870 the maritime trade of the world was revolutionized, sailing vessels were supplanted by steamers, while ocean cables and ocean "tramps" brought about far more rapid movement of commerce than had before been experienced. Politically, this period was marked by the sudden birth of the German empire and the beginning of that intensive internal development of the national resources of that empire in preparation for colonial extension and war, the amazing result of which has been made evident by the recent world conflict. (New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE art of crushing ores and other materials by means of rolls is a comparatively recent one. While the first record of rolls using iron crushing-surfaces dates back to the year 1806, when they were employed in Cornwall, their principal development has taken place during the last 30 years. To Stephen R. Krom belongs the credit of the pioneer in introducing the belted high-speed roll, which has had its origin and a marked development in this country. His notable contribution to the art was in the use of a single bed-plate or frame supporting the roll-shafts, and to which levers holding the movable roll-bearings were pivoted. He also made use of steel tension-rods to support the crushing-strains, and of hammered-steel tires for the crushing-surfaces. These changes brought the design of crushing-rolls to a high level. Following closely thereon, about 1885, W. R. Eckart conceived the idea of the swivel or ball-and-socket support for the roll-shaft bearings. This is an excellent mechanical conception, especially for bearings held against a spring pressure, and while it may not be necessary for all types of rolls, yet it has been quite generally adopted by other roll-designers, and illustrates the refinement which roll-construction has now reached. Other engineers, as for example, Argall, Vezin, Roger, and Sturtevant, to mention only a few among many, have also given the closest attention to the various details of rolls, such as the frame, springs, bearings, and shafts, and have developed many novel and original designs. It has remained, however, for the boldness and originality of Mr. Edison to extend the field of crushing-rolls in two new directions, and to cause them to exercise new functions. In developing crushing-machinery for his Portland cement works, Mr. Edison constructed ? giant " rolls, having a diameter of 6 ft. and a length of. face of 7 ft.

as 1866, I wish to assure both these gentlemen that I had not seen the section when I designed mine, :md even if I had, I should not have then dared to put it forth as a standard for English rail makers; tind the soundness of my opinion has a simple but conclusive proof in the statement made concerning the extra price which was at that time required for their production. I need not say that I highly approve of the original Welch section, for it is in principle similar to the design which I made ufteen yeam subsequently; and from a professional point of view I would fully concecle to Mr. Welch the credit of first designing the modern steel-rail section. From com- mercial, matter of tict, and practical point of view, he was, however, before his time by many years; or to put it in another way, rail making was ten years behind its time when the new metal steel was first introduced for rails. If his design has been incorrectly identified with my name (as the sections are similar in principle, though they differ in thickness of flange and web), I beg to say (1st) that I much regret the misun- Understanding which has arisen through no fault of niine, aud (2d) that no confusion has been intentionally created by me. It is a pity that the section designed so long ago has not been made public at an earlier date, as it would make a really goal stand- and pattern, anil even now be quite equal to present requirements. In conclusion, I wish to say that I have never desired to claim any invention or novelty by the publication of my sections; they Were put forth as being such as English railmakers could and would produce at the ordinary market. price, and as being the best and most suitable to be so obtained. C. G. McLACHLAN*-I have read this paper with considerable interest and wish to congratulate the authors on the care with which they carried out their experiments and for the detailed sizing data they have presented. 011 the other hand I do not feel that these data establish their contention that "with other factors the same, the work accomplished in a fine crushing rod mill is directly proportional to the rotating speed." My reason for making this statement is that their conclusion is based on the percentage of minus 65 mesh material produced at each of the speeds at which their tests were run. The rod mill is, however, not a fine grinding machine and therefore figures based on minus 65 mesh production are figures outside the range at which it operates to best advantage. Further, if rod mill performance is to be judged on the production of such material it should have been established that a rod mill will produce it as effectively as a ball mill. To check this last point I have gone over some of the rod and ball mill grind-ing figures for our Waite-Atnulet operation and find that the ball mill at that property produces more minus 65 mesh material per horsepower than the rod mill. Moreover, this comparison is even more favorable to the ball mill if it is limited to minus 100 mesh production. It therefore seems to me that the most satisfactory basis on which to try to com-pare the performance of the rod mill in the present case is by taking a weighted average of all the new surface produced per horsepower. W. H. Coghill3 has published data which can be applied to the sizing figures presented by the authors, and if this is done the units of new surface per horsepower produced in the Tennessee tests are as follows: Admittedly the increment of increase in new surface per horsepower shown in the foregoing figures is not great, but its trend is nevertheless definitely in favor of slower speed operation, for the conditions under which these particular tests were run. I also feel that some information regarding liner contour should have been given as I think it will be found that a mill which is equipped with liners which lift the rod load can be run at a slower speed than a mill in which the liners are comparatively smooth. J. F. MYERS and F. M. LEWIS (authors' reply)—The position taken by Mr. McLachlan is to be respected even though we are all aware of the faults of surface considerations. As he points out. the increment of increase is very small. It is so small in fact that for all practical purposes it does not conflict with the conclusions of the paper. The authors appreciate Mr. McLachlan's comprehensive study of the data.

DIGGING of veins I have written of, and the timbering of shafts, tunnels, drifts, and other excavations, and the art of surveying. I will now speak first of all, of the iron tools with which veins and rocks are broken, then of the buckets into which the lumps of earth, rock, metal, and other excavated materials are thrown, in order that they may be drawn, conveyed, or carried out. Also, I will speak of the water vessels and drains, then of the machines of different kinds,1 and lastly of the maladies of miners. And while all these matters are being described accurately, many methods of work will be explained. There are certain iron tools which the miners designate by names of their own, and besides these, there are wedges, iron blocks, iron plates, hammers, crowbars, pikes, picks, hoes, and shovels. In the pellet-producing industry it is sometimes claimed that "The pellets are made in the concentrator," or that "The key to good pellets is in the balling operation." However, one claim is generally agreed on: If you can put in, on, and through the indurating furnace a good green ball of Proper size and adequate strength to withstand the handling, load, dehydration, and thermal shock until it is properly heat-hardened, you will have the pellet product you desire-that is, a "competent" green ball. The strength requirements that enable a competent green ball to withstand the environment of the indurating furnace are usually less restrictive than those for transporting the green ball from its source of production to the furnace. Experience has shown that different types of material may have different balling characteristics which may impose limitations on the quality of the green ball that can easily be produced under normal conditions. Therefore, if a specific material will produce a green ball that meets the physical requirements for competency in the furnace, but not for handling or transportation, various practices must be instituted to overcome this deficiency. In other words, if a normal handling system is too rigorous for the green balls that can be produced under standard conditions, then "handling with care" should be tried.
