This paper describes the results of a visit to the Santa Elena Peninsula, Ecuador, in January and February, 1921. On account of the complicated folding and faulting of the rocks and the peculiar occurrence of petroleum, field work was possible on only a few of the many geological problems and the results here published are only a contribution to the solution of the general problem. We know of nothing published on the geology of the district, except one account, in Spanish and German, by Theodor Wolf. The Santa Elena peninsula, the most important headland of the coast of Ecuador, lies two degrees south of the equator. The chief town, Santa Elena, is about 75 miles west of Guayaquil, the main seaport of Ecuador. The nearest developed oil field is the Zorritos of northern Peru, 120 miles south across the Gulf of Guayaquil. If newspaper reports are true, viz. that the Anglo-Ecuadorian Oilfields, Ltd., has recently brought in a 700-bbl. well on the coast of the peninsula near Ancon, the district may become important in the production of petroleum. At the time of our visit, the best way to reach the peninsula was by a steamer of the Pacific Steam Navigation Go., southward from Panama and northward from Guayaquil. About once a week, one of these steamers anchored 1/2 mile off shore near the village of Salinas, an important cable station. An alternative route, in the dry season, is by automobile from Guayaquil. In February, 1921, a railway bed had been graded part way between Guayaquil and Salinas, but this was detcriorating rapidly because of lack of funds to continue construction or to keep in repair that portion already completed.

THE general conception of a mine model is that of a three-dimensional object representing the mine workings, the orebody and the country rock of a particular property. Its chief uses have been to make it easier to understand the mine and to serve as a basis for the arguing of legal questions. Fayol endeavored to use mine models in a different way and to all students of subsidence "Fayol's dome theory" is of decided interest. We have more recently the suggestion of Young and Stoek of the University of Illinois, who1 suggest the use of models as a means of studying the problem. Prof. Henry Briggs, of the University of Edinburgh and Herriott Watt College, also makes use of models to determine the effects of bending at the edges of extensive workings.2 It is interesting to note that civil engineers are taking a decided interest in the application of models and the principles of dynamic similarity to the solution of their problems. The Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers for 1930 contain an elaborate article by Benjamin F. Groat,3 who says, in his opening remarks: "Every engineer should know and understand that a model constructed in accordance with Newton's theory of similarity is not only the means for reproducing the complexities of flow, or other mechanical action, on a small scale, but that models may be made the best means of designing works of great magnitude. In the present state of knowledge, a properly constructed and properly tested model will answer the difficult questions of hydrodynamics much more quickly and accurately than the most profound mathematical analyses." A study of P. W. Bridgman's book on Dimensional Analyses leads one to arrive at the same conclusion.

For over 200 years meerschaum has been a significant item of trade between the Near East and countries to the west. Best-known for its use in making smoking pipes and cigar and cigarette holders, it is also used in making a variety of decorative and ornamental items. It is easily carved, and is given an attractive, lustrous finish by rubbing. No published specifications are known, but compact form, purity, uniform whiteness or light color, and uniform, porous texture appear to be requisites. Fig. I a shows the appearance of a piece of crude meerschaum from Turkey; Fig. lb a carved item; and Fig. lc, d, and e show the fibrous and porous texture as revealed by the scanning electron microscope. Neither a major industrial mineral nor a precious stone, meerschaum nevertheless holds a record of long-and continuing-association with art and personal affairs of man. It is also a mineral to which modem methods of exploration and production probably could be profitably applied. An interesting account of the preparation and use of meerschaum in the early part of this century is given by Sterrett (1907). Geology and Mining Mineralogy Meerschaum is recognized now to be the compact variety of sepiolite, the claylike variety of which is one of the minerals included in the chapter on clays. The word meerschaum, from the German meaning "sea foam," was in earlier times used synonymously with sepiolite, a word of Greek origin suggestive of the resemblance of the compact variety-then the only variety known-to cuttlefish bone. At one time meerschaum was used as the commercial name, and sepiolite for the scientific name. However, to think of meerschaum as the name by which sepiolite is known commercially is no longer valid, in view of the recent emergence of the earthy variety as a competitor of bentonite and other clay materials. Present tendency is to restrict the term meerschaum to the compact variety, and to use the term sepiolite as a more general name to include both the compact and earthy varieties. This is the terminology followed in this publication. Meerschaum typically is white to light gray, has a hardness of 2 to 2 ½ , conchoidal to irregular fracture, and specific gravity varying with porosity from about 2 to less than 1. The composition is somewhat variable,- but is near that determined by Schaller (1936) for sepiolite as 2MgO.3SiO2.4H2O. A more modern for mula based on X-ray determination of the crystal structure is given by Caillére and Henin (1961) as (Site) (Mg9)030(OH)6(0H2)46H20. The reason for the firm, compact nature of meerschaum, in contrast with the earthy variety of sepiolite, is not fully understood. It may be due to the presence of a very minor amount of some bonding material such as silica. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs of a specimen from Turkey (Figs. lc-le) indicate that the meerschaum is composed predominantly, if not entirely, of crystalline fibers which merge into sheetlike forms in a complex, intertwined mass. Detailed X-ray and crystal structure data, as well as some data on thermal stability range, are given by Caillère and Hénin (1961) for the sepiolite family of minerals. Mode of Occurrence and Origin Most authors have attributed the origin of meerschaum to alteration of serpentine or other magnesian minerals. The occurrence in alluvium and other surficial deposits does not necessarily indicate that the alteration was supergene. In fact, hydrothermal origin appears more likely for some deposits, though not for all.

Many producers of by-product coke have spent considerable time and given considerable thought to the use of a substitute for low-volatile coal as an admixture with high-volatile coking coal for charging high-temperature by-product coke ovens. Generally speaking, there are two principal reasons for this, one being occasioned by the lack, in certain localities, of low-volatile coal delivered at a cost sufficiently low to permit its use, and another being the desirability of finding a substitute product with a delivered cost lower than the cost of the low-volatile coal. It was for the first of these reasons that the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation was particularly interested in this subject. This paper deals with the experimental work and the results obtained by that company in producing and using low-temperature char. Overcoming Defects in Coke from Colorado Coals Colorado coking coals are all of the high-volatile type and were all laid down during the Cretaceous period, which makes them something like 80 million or so years younger, geologically, than eastern coals. They behave, when coked alone, something like the Pittsburgh-seam coals. They make a very brittle, highly cross-fractured, fingery coke of fair shatter value but quite low in resistance to abrasion. Mixed with a low-volatile coking coal such as Poca- hontas or certain Oklahoma coals, they make a coke that is equal to virtually any of the eastern cokes. The inferior quality of Colorado coke has long been recognized, and a considerable amount of time, effort and money has been spent upon investigations of means for improving its physical properties. While it has been found that some improvement in quality of coke can be secured by the adjustment and control of such variables as pulverization, moisture content, oven temperature and bulk density of charge, and through the addition of certain inert materials such as pulverized coke breeze, pitch, high-volatile noncoking or semicoking coal, the benefits so gained have been comparatively small. There are no low or medium-volatile coking coals available within a reasonable freight-cost distance. Therefore a substitute for low-vol-atile coal was developed through low-tem-perature carbonization—or, more correctly speaking, through the partial devolatiliza-tion—of high-volatile coals. The blending of this lower volatile char with the high-volatile coking coal distinctly improves the quality of coke made from Colorado coal. There is nothing especially new about this idea. In 1908 a Japanese patent was taken out by Kotaro Shimomura, whose claim was: The method of making a nonfingery coke out of bituminous coals, without using natural coals of low-volatile matter; according to which a certain coal is heated at a temperature between about 300°C. and about 600°C. so as to leave about 15 to 25 per cent volatile matter in the coal; this coal is mixed with the

With the papers of Palmer and Smith1 and of Burghoff and Bohlen,2 published in 1942, understanding of the problem of the development of ears on deep-drawn brass cups was brought to the point where, from a practical standpoint, producers of brass sheet could keep earing under control. However, these very practical results raised questions concerning the reasons for the observed behavior. Since plastic deformation is fundamentally a function of crystallographic slip, these reasons must be considered in the light of the textures to be found in the annealed sheet. Various attempts have been made. to interpret the mechanism of ear formation by correlation with the preferred orientation and the anisotropy of the sheet. However, none of these has satisfactorily explained why ears are usually found in the rolling and transverse directions for copper but at 45' to these directions for brass. This paper offers additional data on these two related subjects and has been divided into two sections The first section provides a survey of the recrystallization textures of brass as affected by annealing temperatures and prior reductions, and an account of the caring behavior which accompanies these textures. The second section reports new data on the anisotropy that accompanies a characteristic texture for brass and endeavors with partial success to establish the factors that account for the difference in earing behavior between copper and brass Earing BehavioR oF Brass Review of Textures The recrystallization texture of severely rolled brass was first reported by Bass and Glocker.3 The preferred orientation to which this texture, obtained from metal annealed at 500°C., was most akin was (II3)[I12] This texture has been confirmed by Bauer, von Göler and Sachs;4 Brick;' Brick, Martin and Angier;6 and Cook and Richards7 who, in general, used annealing temperatures under 500°C. Bass and Glocker3 also reported the recrystallization texture at 850°C. to be the same as at 500°C. They analyzed their textures by means of single photograms obtained with white radiation. The photo-grams for both temperatures are reproduced in their paper, and there is a strong similarity between the two. However, for the latter temperature, the number of spots registered on the film was remarkably large for the grain size to be expected, and the authors made no mention of using a technique that would integrate a large enough area of the specimen to produce so many spots. CREATION of a "committee on promotion of student interest in coal mining" has an encouraging implication for the coal industry. It is indicative that mining men, both in the field and in the educational centers, realize that the problems of the industry require the best talent available. Young men are being invited into coal on the premise that it needs them, that it offers opportunity for creative work and the realization of their objectives. In initiating a movement which purports to meet the objectives of any young man who spends four or five years of his life in college, the industry does so with a full realization of its obligations.

Many attempts have been made during the last 40 years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipement, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made by Cerchar at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris in 1950. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last two decades. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now-accepted standard presentation. The float-and-sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve me then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the content is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods. Many attempts had been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of heavy-media separation (HMS) equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which floats and sinks are separated.'-' The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made by Cerchar at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris. 6 The primary aim was the thorough understanding of the mechanism of separation and the unified presentation of data on gravity separation so that the evaluation and comparison of washery performance could be made from all over the world. No strict overall standardization has been achieved, but after the conference a more or less uniform presentation of performance was accepted, which, during the last two decades, has been very widely used. In this paper, illustration of the old methods and an improved method of evaluation will be given. HEAVY-MEDIA SEPARATION (HMS) PERFORMANCE CRITERIA In the ideal HMS process, all material lower in density than the specific gravity of separation (SGS) would be recovered as floats and all material of higher density would appear as sinks. In order to evaluate the misplaced material, the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated. The original type of plot1,7, 8 is shown in Fig 1; this was developed primarily for coal cleaning units. The curve for raw coal represents the cumulative percentages of sink material. The refuse curve is also plotted as a cumulative sink, the percentages being expressed in terms of raw coal. This diagrammatic representation of the results of washing units has the merit of easy visual observance of the degree of separation obtained. The error areas (cross-hatched) are a measure of the amount of misplaced material and therefore they can be used to characterize the quality of separation. The ideal and actual separating performance between floats and sinks can be best seen from the partition curve developed by Tromp,2 where the ordinate is the percentage recovery of the sinks, and the abscissa is the specific gravity (Fig. 2). It can be seen from the shape of the curve that as the SGS is approached, the proportion of material reporting to the improper product increases rapidly. In fact, the SGS can be defined as the density of the material in the feed that is distributed equally between float-and-sink products. When the upper half of the curve is inverted, a shape similar to that of a Gaussian error distribution curve is obtained and therefore the analysis of gravity separation may be carried out by using the law of probability. The shape of the curve in Fig. 2 is determined partly by the density composition of the feed, and partly by the sharpness with which the unit separates floats from the sinks.9, l0

AII evaluation is made of the acoustic velocity log for measurement of formation porosity. Plots of field-observer1 velocities vs core-measured porosities of sandstones and limestotnes with inter intergranular porosity show that the velocity log gives a useful measure of porotity, in agreement with published data. A new method of plotting electrical and velocity log data makes it easier to recognize hydrocarbon-water coritnct~ from log darn and to make serni-quantitative estinlates of hydrocarbon saturation. Two examples of this interpretation technique are given. This paper also discusses the various factors that affect acoustic velocity and shows how corrections can be made for some of these factors. INTRODUCTION Although the continuous velocity log was developed primarily as an aid to seismic interpretation, it is finding widespread use for measurement of porosity. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate this use of the log. Results are presented for the velocity-porosity relationship in many sandstones and one limestone. Practical applications of porosity values derived from the velocity log to improve interpretation of electrical surveys are presented. Various parameters which affect velocity in porous media are considered. Porosity, composition, cementa-tion, pressure difference (overburden pressure minus fluid pressure), fluid saturation, and wellability are discussed. Some of the ideas are opinions based on general considerations of well logging problems while others are supported by published data and our own observations. Major conclusions from these studies arc given in the body of the paper and detailed discussions of some of the various factors affecting porosity are given in the Appendix. POROSITY Sandstones The primary factor affecting the velocity of sound in porous media is porosity. Wyllie, et al,1 have reported a time average equation for the relationship between velocity and porosity.* This has found considerable acceptance in the industry. Other relationships between velocity and porosity have been proposed, none of which are entirely satisfactory. It is doubtful that any one relationship will completely describe all situations. We have tried an empirical relationship based on correlating log velocities with core-measured porosities. Measured porosities were averaged over a depth interval equal to the spacing used in recording the velocity logs. The depth range for the information used was from 2,000 to 12,000 ft. Velocity measurements were normalized for the effects of depth and overburden pressure. A detailed discussion of the basis for this normalization is given in the Appendix. The change is usually insignificant and when working with individual formations it can be neglected. All velocity measurements were normalized to a depth of 10,000 ft. The velocity-porosity data for sandstones in Fig. 1 came from 20 wells scattered throughout the Mid-Continent and Gulf Coast areas. The scatter of the data points is attributed to three causes: 1. There is no theoretical basis for expecting an exact velocity vs porosity relationship and it is not possible to correct precisely for the effects of such factors as impurities, grain shape, manner of cementation, etc. Some of these factors are discussed in the Appendix. 2. Porosities measured by core analysis are not necessarily representative of what the velocity log "sees". 3. Inaccuracies appear in the velocity log reading. This is particularly true of velocities from one-receiver logging tools.*" A linear-time curve (time-average equation) is plotted in Fig. 1 along with the best straight line through the points. Velocities used for the linear-time curves were 19,500 ft/sec for the matrix velocity (zero porosity) and 5,500 ft/sec for fluid velocity. For clean sandstones with velocities greater than 10,000 ft/sec, there is little difference between the velocity-porosity and the time-porosity curves. Both curves are well within the scatter of data points. The data points in Fig. 1 were restricted primarily to clean sandstones, using the SP and/or gamma-ray logs as clues to the lithology. The question of the influence of gases upon the properties of copper has received the attention of a number of investigators, among whom Sieverts,' Iwase,2 Lobley and Jepson3 stand preeminent. Solubility of Gases in Copper Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a variety of gases in the metal in the solid and liquid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metal. In this respect they disagree with Lobley and Jepson, who have based their opinions upon the appearance of small ingots of the metal which had been fused in an atmosphere of one or other of three gases and had then been rapidly cooled, while surrounded by gas, to the freezing point (rate—possibly 30" to 60" C. per sec.). The ingots that had been fused and cooled under nitrogen and carbon monoxide were free from blowholes and it was assumed that these gases were not absorbed in amounts much in excess of those which would dissolve in the solid metal; the ingots similarly treated under hydrogen were full of blowholes and it was assumed in this case that gas was ejected on solidification of the copper. The effect of varying the rate of freezing upon the character of the test ingots was not examined by these investigators; otherwise, it is felt, their views might have been subject to modification. Sieverts' most important contribution is that the solubility of a gas in any metal is proportional to the square root of its pressure or concentration. Knowing then the absorption coefficients of the various gases in copper, it should be possible to determine the analysis of the

Forty-six alloys covering the complete concentration range of the Nb-Rh system were examined by metallographic and X-ray methods; solubility limits of terminal ad intermediate phases and transformation and solidus temperatures were determined. There are nine intermediate phases; two eutectic, five peritectic, two eutectoid, and three peritectnid reactions were encountered. The experimental methods and the constitution diagram are described in Part I. Part 11 deals with the crys -tallography and relation of the intermediate phases. The Nb-Rh system was selected for study for three reasons: first, it was hoped that the anticipated similarity of the Nb-Rh phase diagram to the Ta-Rh1 and Ta-Ir2 diagrams treated earlier (see also Ref. 3) and to the Nb-1r4 diagram treated simultaneously would allow a crystallographic and comparative evaluation of the intermediate phases in these related systems; second, it was likely that the previous experimental methods could be carried over without significant change; and third, it was expected that the interesting mechanical properties of the a1 phase of the Ta-Rh and Ta-Ir systems would also be encountered in similar phases of the new systems, and that these phases could be investigated more closely. The phase diagram had not been treated fully in the literature; only brief surveys of some intermediate phases were found.5-7 It was attempted to cover the details of the phase boundaries, Part I, as well as to present the crystallography of the intermediate phases, Part 11. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Specimen Preparation and Treatment. The following high-purity starting materials were used. 1) Niobium powder, 99.8 pct pure, mesh size -60 +200, from Wah Chang Corp., Albany, Ore. The experiments herein described were undertaken with a view to investigating thoroughly the influence of carbon on the tensile and impact physical properties of carbon steel. The original comprehensive plan included investigation of a series of steels with varying carbon contents over a wide range of heat treatments. These were to be studied as to their static tensile qualities, and also their resistance to shock as measured by the Charpy impact bending test. A thorough metallographic examination was likewise included in the schedule. The Charpy tests and the metallographic examination have not been completed to date, and are accordingly withheld for another report. All heat treatments, however, have been made, and the static tensile tests have been completed. A description of the procedure of the experiment and the results thus far obtained are therefore reported herein. Conclusions No attempt is made to draw general conclusions from these experiments, but the curves and the data are submitted as being of general importance and wide applicability. Composition of Materials An attempt was made to secure steels increasing in carbon by increments of 0.1 per cent. from 0.1 per cent. up to 0.8 per cent., and from that composition to 1.6 per cent. by increments of 0.2 per cent. Actually, however, steels of the composition given in Table I were procured, and as the carbon contents were arranged sufficiently well so that satisfactory curves could be drawn showing the relation between carbon content and other properties, these steels were used in the experiments.

Resistive measurements ulere made on superconducting niobium single crystals in transverse magnetic fields. Crystals were grouln in both high and ulfrahigh vacua, doped with stnall quantities of oxygen, and annealed in ultrahigh vacua at temperatures from 900&apos; to 1350°C. Maxima in the fluxoid pinr~ir~g force were observedfor the [100] and [210] directions. The increase of the critical current density with dissoved oxygen was seen to saturate at relatively low concentration. This behavior, and the variation of J, and residual resistivity (as a function of oxygen content and annealing) of both clean and dirty gassy) crystals, is seen as a consequence of the formation of clusters with (210)~b habit planes and (200)ffo common boundaries. These suboxide clusters are apparenlly stable at high temperatures and very low oxygen concentrations. It is generally known that dissolved oxygen at concentrations well below the solubility limit sharply increases the critical current density of superconducting niobium.&apos; Such a result would not be expected if Nb-0 solutions were random, not even as the result of segregation on the scale usually encountered in solid solutions. According to the Kim-Anderson theory of flux creep,&apos; the critical transport current density is determined by the pinning force Fp associated with some feature of the microstructure. As the Lorentz force. a or (J X R), of the transport current in the magnetic field approaches Fp, flux creep and then flux flow occur. The pinning force is expected to be quite small if the heterogeneity involved is significantly smaller than tte range of coherency which for niobium is circa 250~.~ Although the strain field of an individual oxygen atom in the niobium lattice is relatively large, it does not seem plausible that individual atoms could be so effective as to account for the data. Also, ~ramer~ found that straining and strain aging specimens containing small amounts of oxygen on occasion decreased the residual resistivity. A possible explanation for the above behavior may be found in the work of van Ooijen and van der Goot,= who found that annealing changed J, for niobium foils containing oxygen, and they attributed the changes to ordering of the oxygen atoms. This phenomenon has been observed by other investigators using X-ray and PROCEDURE Cylindrical 4-in.-diam niobium single crystals with axial orientations [ill], [110], [112], and [oo~] were grown from pure niobium, see Table I for analysis, in an ion-pumped ultrahigh-vacuum system using the electron beam floating zone technique. Total pressure during growth was lo-&apos;9 torr: the oxygen partial pressure was less than lo-" torr, as determined by a mass spectrometer. These crystals will be referred to as the "clean" crystals. Similar crystals were also grown in another system at a pressure of 5 X 10"6 torr. These crystals will be referred to as the "dirty" crystals. Specimens 14 in. long were cut from the as-grown crystals and one end was polished down to no. 600 carbide paper smoothness. A back-reflection Laue photograph was then taken in order to fix the crystallo-graphic directions transverse to the crystal. The critical current density J,, the current density necessary to produce a voltage drop of 1.0 pv between voltage leads placed a in. apart, was determined as a function of the magnitude and direction of the transverse magnetic field and of the oxygen concentration. The technique and experimental arrangement was essentially similar to that of Tedmon et al.&apos; In the remainder of this paper, the azjmuthal angle $ for the field H is referenced to the [ I101 direction in all four crystals, and oxygen was added in small equal increments by anodization and annealing.7 The resistivity ratio, RR, of the resistance at room ternperature to that at 4.2"K (H =7.00 kG) was determined as well.

A back- reflection precession-type X-yay camera for determining the crystallographic orientation of the crystallites of both phases in small areas of thick specimens of polyphase alloys is described ad the geometry, advantages, and limitations of the apparatus are discussed. Metallographic obseg-vations of interfacial angles (or habit planes or growth direction are made on the same specimen so that the crystallographic and metallographzc orientation data call be directly correlated. An example of the application of tile technique to a unidi-~~ectionally solidified CuA12-A1 eutectic specimen is presented. The interfacial planes ad growth directions of each phase were established, and the orientation relationship between the phases was observed and found to be approximately intermediate between two previously reported relationships. The crystallographic interfacial relationship between two solid phases is an important parameter in a variety of metallurgical phenomena because of the energy associated with the interface and because this energy is at least partly associated with the way in which the two space lattices are in contact along the interface. In order to describe the interfacial planes in the crystallites of both phases it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of each phase in a specimen relative to each other, and to directly correlate these data with met-allographic measurements from which the interfacial planes can be determined on the same specimen. The back-reflection Laue technique is the easiest way to determine the orientation of thick single crystals or large grains and the method can be combined with metallographic techniques to provide the necessary data, provided the reflections from each phase can be distinguished from one another. However, if the crystallites are small or of varying orientation or if one or both phases has a unit cell with less than the maximum symmetry, many overlapping and complex Laue patterns are recorded simultaneously and it becomes impractical if not impossible to interpret the photographs. All of these complexities were present in a unidirectionally so- lidified A1-CuA12 eutectic alloy1 for which a crystallographic analysis was desired. Consequently the method described here was developed since no known X-ray or electron diffraction technique had all of the following attributes which were required. 1) Method should yield data from which the crys-tallographic orientation of every crystallite or diffracting unit in the irradiated area can be determined. 2) Method should be adaptable to the study of small areas. Depending upon the degree of preferred orientation in the specimens, it should be possible to obtain reliable data in a reasonable length of time on irradiated areas as small as 1.0 or even 0.1 mm in diam. 3) Method should permit direct correlation of crystallographic data with microscopic orientation data pertaining to crystallite axes, habit, morphology, and growth directions as determined by optical microscopy. 4) method should be such that selected areas of large specimens can be easily studied. Trepanning of a small specimen (such as an electron microscope specimen) from larger specimens was undesirable since it would greatly increase the problem of correlating the crystallographic and microscopic directional data. Requirements 3 and 4 dictated that an X-ray back-reflection pinhole technique should be used on large samples, such as metallographic specimens which had previously been examined and analyzed for their microscopic characteristics. Similarly, requirement 2 could be satisfied by choosing a collimator of appropriately small diameter. Exposure times would not be excessive provided the detector were close enough to the specimen. Because of space limitations film was chosen in preference to a Geiger counter. Requirement 1 was fulfilled by using monochromatic radiation and providing enough additional degrees of freedom in specimen rotation to compensate for Bragg law restrictions on diffracted beams. IT has been known for several years that in certain age-hardenable alloys precipitation of finely divided particles occurs simultaneously with the changes in physical properties; while, in other alloys, these changes take place prior to, or without any, precipitation. . The silver-copper alloys are generally considered to be the classical example of the first group, and the aluminum-copper alloys (duralumin) are typical of the second group. The two types of aging are explained by the precipitation theory and the knot theory respectively. ? It is well recognized now that these theories do not conflict with each other; the one used for a given aging system depends upon which way the alloy in question happens to age-harden. However, previous work on the aluminum-copper alloys1,2 has shown that if the aging temperature is raised sufficiently the hardening will be accompanied by actual precipitation. In fact, it is quite probable that all of the so-called knot-hardening alloys will harden by precipitation at elevated temperatures. Therefore, a combination of the knot and precip-itation theories is necessary to give a complete picture of the age-harden-ing of these alloys, and indicates that knot formation and precipitation are not independent processes. To test the generality of this concept, it is necessary to show that the alloys that commonly harden by precipitation will harden prior to precip¬itation if the aging temperature is sufficiently lowered. For this reason, it would be well to carefully re-examine the aging characteristics of the silver-copper alloys at aging temperatures somewhat below those used by previous investigators. If hardening can be detected prior to precipi¬tation in these alloys, it will lend great weight to the idea that knot forma-

THE MOGOLLON mining district, New Mexico, has received little public attention, although for 15 years it has been the leading silver producer of the state; it is situated in a region remote from the principal lines of travel, and its activities have usually been limited to the operations of two or three companies. The value of the total production of the district in the 44 years of its history has been estimated at $15,000,000. For the years 1904 to 1917, inclusive, the output was: gold, $4,370,000; silver, 10,042,000 oz.; copper, 874,862 lb.; total value, approximately. $10,500,000. In 1913 the district contributed 80 per cent. of the total silver production of New Mexico, but in 1917 only 41 per cent., due to serious interruption in the operations of the leading producer. Since 1914 the silver output has diminished one-half, and the present high value of silver is nearly offset by the increase in cost of production. The output of gold has rarely exceeded 35 per cent, of the total for New Mexico. The ratio of silver to gold, by weight, has averaged 46:1 based on the whole output of the district. LOCATION AND TOPOGRAPHY The town of Mogollon is 75 mi. (121 km.) by a poorly located highway from the nearest railroad terminals, at Silver City and Tyrone. All supplies are transported by motor trucks and teams. The area, sometimes called the Cooney Mining District, lies on the western flank of the Mogollon Mountains, which occupy the western part of Socorro County. The elevations drop steeply on the west to the valley of the San Francisco River, adjacent to the Arizona boundary. The topography is very rugged, the whole area being sharply dissected; deep canyons with steep gradients and rugged walls are characteristic of the whole western-slope of the Mogollon Range. The main canyons run east and west, and usually maintain a flow of water during the entire year. As would be expected in a region of such deep dissection, the

The paper shows that in general it can be done. The underlying theory is explained, the apparatus which was developed and built to do this is described, and the results of laboratory experiments with sandstone mine structures are given. There is discussion of the accuracy of results with the present equipment, the model size necessary, and of the size and type of equipment necessary for the obtaining of results of practical value in the field. Milling and Concentration Ball Mill Studies, I. By A. W. Fahrenwald and Harold E. Lee. (Tech. Pub. No. 375. 25,000 words.)—This paper presents the results of an extensive experimental study of some of the numerous elements entering into ball mill grinding. All apparatus used was equipped with ball bearings. Every experiment was accompanied by a power measurement accurate to 0.005 hp. Quartz was used. Each element studied, such as ball load, was varied systematically. Power curves were obtained for the mill for three general sets of conditions; namely, (1) balls only (2) balls and quartz and (3) balls, quartz and water. For each general condition, power curves were obtained for various mill speeds, ball loads and ball sizes. For conditions 2 and 3, feed sizc and weight and pulp dilution also were studied as variables. The mill output, in grams of finished product per unit of time, was obtained for each test.
