This US. Bureau of Mines report examines the roof and floor contact pressure provided by the interaction of a shield with the surrounding strata. Controlled forces were applied to an 800-ton two-leg shield in the Bureau's mine roof simulator; the distribution of forces acting on the canopy and base of the shield were measured with 24 hydraulic pressure cells. Several influential factors that affect the load distribution were investigated: (1) the magnitude of loading (leg pressure); (2) the profile of the canopy, principally the upward-sloping tip; (3) the base-lifting device; (4) horizontal load acting on the shield; and (5) compliancy of the immediate roof and floor. It was concluded that the shield does not develop full canopy or base contact without deformation of the strata. Maximum contact pressures are developed at the rear of the canopy and on the toes of the base. Less than 10 pct of the available shield capacity is developed at the canopy tip despite the design intention to ensure tip contact. Horizontal loading reduced the toe pressure acting on the base by as much as 75 pct. The base-lifting device exaggerated the inherently high toe loading, increasing the contact pressure by more than 200 pct.

Norton Co., a manufacturer of abrasive products and diamond drilling and coring bits for oil and gas exploration, is building a $19.1 million addition, scheduled for completion in late 1980, to the Huntsville, AL. The plant makes alumina-zirconia abrasive grains used in grinding wheels and coated abrasives. ALUMINUM Martin Marietta Aluminum Inc. announced plans to expand production capacity of its 112,000-ton-per-year primary aluminum smelter at Goldendale, WA to 177,000 tons per year. The $125 million expansion was scheduled to come onstream in 1981. The Aluminum Company of America announced plans to restart a fourth potline during October at its 185,000-ton-per-year Point Comfort, TX primary aluminum smelter.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts research at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, with the aim of mitigating the effects of rock bursting. Destress blasting is commonly used as a stress control technique at the mine. A digital seismic array and an array of borehole pressure cells (BPC's) had been installed near the site of a stope undergoing mining and periodic de stressing. The instrumentation was being monitored at the time of a destress blast of the 46-99 stope. No significant seismic events occurred coincident with the destress. However, the destress was followed by a 2 ½ -week period of increased seismic activity, including two damaging events on February 7, 1990, at 034500 (hour, minute, and second) and 122020 Pacific standard time. BPC measurements indicated coseismic ground pressure changes on the order of 200 to 300 kPa associated with the damaging events. Fault plane solutions and dislocation models established that stress changes induced by the event at 034500 may have been significant in promoting the occurrence of the event at 122020. Theoretical investigations suggest that applying knowledge of the existing stress field, an understanding of rock burst mechanics, and fracture mechanics principles can improve destress effectiveness.

In this paper, results of a novel synthesis method of carbon-coated LiNi113Mn113Co11302 cathode material for lithium-ion battery are reported. The carbon coating was produced from a precursor, glucose, by microwave-pyrolysis method. The structure, morphology and electrochemical performance of the bare and carbon-coated LiNi113Mn113Co11302 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and charge-discharge tests respectively. The L8(27) orthogonal experiments were carried out to optimize LiNi113Co113Mn1130z/C technological conditions. The conditions of the orthogonal experiments were that the glucose content were 1.5 % and 4 %, the holding time were 15min and 30min, the heating temperature were 400 °C and 500 °C and the solvent were H20 and CH3CH20H. The main experiment target include specific capacity at 0.1C and 0.2C, Capacity retention rate, medium voltage attenuation rate and The fifth discharge medium voltage. The data were analyzed by Minitab 14 statistics software. The results of analysis of variance indicated that the most influential factor was the glucose content despite of discharge rate. Secondly, the effect of the solvent was equivalent to the holding time.

I. INTRODUCTION. THE facts is presented in this paper, based chiefly on recon¬naissance made, during the summer of 1903, by myself and my assistant, Mr. R.. C. Brooks, cover practically all that portion of Texas lying east of the 99th meridian. The work was undertaken for the University of Texas Mineral Survey, and was to have been extended over the entire State, but the sudden termination of the survey prevented even the official publication of the results already obtained. Most of the mineral resources of Texas were fully treated by the First Geological Survey, but the clay-industry was tit that time little developed, so that only a few scattered notes concerning it are to be found in the Survey reports. The extensive exploitation of the clay-deposits, however, has emphasized their commercial importance, and has also made accessible many facts of exceptional interest concerning their geologic conditions. The erection of new plants for the utilization of clay-products is usually preceded by more or less prospecting, which, by reason of the scarcity of outcrops, and the geologic and topographic conditions of eastern and southeastern Texas, is often slow and difficult work. This is especially true in the Tertiary and Pleistocene areas, where the structural conditions much resemble those of the Atlantic coastal plain, the deposits being mostly lenticular in form, and surrounded by beds of sand. II. GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE CLAY-DEPOSITS. The accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1, shows the location of nearly all the deposits examined, their relation to the geology of the State, and the type of clay found in each. The geology is based on the published work of Hill, Cummins, Tail, Adams, Hayes and Kennedy, but the boundaries have unfortunately not been determined over the entire region covered by the map, and, in many areas, are only approximate. It will be seen that the clay-deposits range from Carboniferous to Pleistocene in age, the older deposits being found in the northwestern part of the area, while those of Cretaceous and Tertiary age lie to the east, southeast and south. The Pleistocene clays are found in part in a belt along the coast, and in part along many of the larger rivers, where they often underlie extensive terraces.

Pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations have been in commercial use at the Fort Saskatchewan refinery of Sherritt International Corporation for fifty years. This paper traces the history of Sherritt from its origins in northern Manitoba, and the development of the first hydrometallurgical nickel-cobalt refinery in 1954, utilizing pressure hydrometallurgy, to the modern day refinery. Sherritt's involvement with pressure hydrometallurgy during the past 50 years has included the operation of the refinery, the development and licensing of technology, incorporating pressure hydrometallurgical unit operations, to more than 30 companies worldwide, the joint venture at Moa, Cuba involving both leaching and precipitation at elevated temperature and pressure, and the production of specialty metal powders. Developments in each of these areas are reviewed.

The outstanding trend in the graphite market is the fast-growing demand for cheaper qualities of graphite and the declining consumption of the more expensive varieties. The manufacture of graphite, crucibles for melting metals was one of the earliest applications of the-mineral and for many years constituted by far the leading source of demand. In later, years, however; and more especially since the Great War, the increasing demand for high-grade steel ingots and castings instead of enlarging crucible sales has permanently curtailed the domestic demand for crucibles because it has hastened the introduction of electric, oil or gas fired furnaces to replace the older types requiring pots to hold the metal during melting. While there has been a substantial increase in the use of graphite for miscellaneous refractories the total consumption for such purposes is too small to offset the shrinkage in demand for crucible making, and though it consumes the better and hence more expensive grades of crystalline flake graphite, it does not call so insistently for the still costlier Ceylon grades.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. The Bureau's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the U.S. Bureau of Mines survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

From March 1944 to July 1945 the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Federal Bureau of Mines made magnetometer surveys of some of the principal iron ore deposits of the Iron Springs district, Iron County, Utah. The district comprises a belt about 23 miles long and 3 miles wide. Most of the large ore bodies are found as pods of replacement ore within a favorable limestone bed lying at the margins of three separate igneous intrusions in the district The magnetic surveys were confined chiefly to this geologically favorable zone at the margins. The iron ore is a mixture of magnetite and hematite. The magnetite content of the ore ranges from 14 to 58 percent. Magnetic anomalies of 1,250 gammas or more were usually found over the near-surface ore bodies. About 62,000 magnetometer stations were taken over a total traverse distance of about 300 miles. Outcropping ore bodies were surveyed to determine, insofar as was possible from the magnetic data, their probable length, width, depth, extent, strike, dip, and tonnage. Geologically favorable areas where no ore is exposed were explored in an endeavor to find new ore bodies. Favorable locations were determined for exploratory diamond drilling, both in areas of exposed ore bodies and in areas of newly discovered magnetic anomalies. Forty-five separate magnetic anomalies that indicate the possible existence of ore bodies were observed. Of these, 13 anomalies are caused by outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size. Five are caused by non-outcropping ore bodies of proved commercial size which were discovered, in whole or in part, as a result of the geophysical surveys. Of the remaining anomalies, which lie in virtually un-tested areas where few or no ore bodies are exposed, six probably are caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, nine are possibly caused by large, unexposed replacement ore bodies, and six are probably caused by unexposed magnetite veins of some small commercial importance,

Sedimentary deposits of pluvial Lake Bonneville are an important source of sand and gravel suitable for aggregate and construction in Utah. Data on Lake Bonneville basin sand and gravel deposit thickness, volume, grain size, percent of fines, and durability were statistically analyzed to detect variations associated with geologic domains, geographic location, Lake Bonneville shorelines, and sand and gravel deposit type, and to construct quantitative deposit models. Analysis showed several trends; (1) sand and gravel in younger shorelines was slightly more durable and the deposits considerably larger in volume, (2) younger shore- lines are also more likely to contain more than one genetic deposit type, (3) the volume of terrace deposits is larger than beach deposits, (4) terraces and beaches are generally thicker than spits and bars, (5) the northern part of the Bonneville Basin contains slightly more durable sand and gravel than the southern part of the basin and is more likely to contain deposits composed of more than one genetic deposit type, aid (6) the Wasatch domain deposits are composed of more than one genetic deposit type more often than deposits of the Basin and Range domain. Three additional conclusions with immediate economic significance are; (1) the median sand and gravel deposit in the Wasatch domain, 360,000 m3 (275,000 yd3), is three times larger than that of the Basin and Range domain (120,000 m3 [90,000 yd3]), (2) the median deposit thickness in the Wasatch domain, 5.8 m (19.0 ft), is nearly twice that of the Basin and Range domain (3 m [lo ft]), and (3) the Wasatch domain also contains slightly larger diameter gravel. These three conclusions are significant because the trend for sand and gravel development in the Bonneville Basin is to move from the Wasatch domain to the Basin and Range domain. Smaller, thinner deposits with smaller diameter gravel will require more surface area to mine than would have been necessary in the Wasatch domain. The result is a higher cost for sand and gravel in construction projects in the Salt Lake City area, especially since the gravel must also be hauled farther.

This circular presents Part III-A of a series reviewing the literature on effects of breathing dusts with special reference to silicosis; it deals with the economic and legal aspects of dust diseases in industry; Part III-B will contain data on the status and cost of compensation for silicosis, Parts I and II of the series have been issued as Information Circulars 6835, 6840, and 6848; Part I defines and classifies dusts, indicates sources of exposure, and describes the physiological effects of breaching dusts; Part II-A discusses the principal dust factors producing pulmonary pathology and methods of determination of dust in air; and Part II-B presents data on the engineering and medical control in the prevention of dust diseases and general recommendations for their control in industry. A summary and general conclusions will complete the series.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct its the 2014 National Mining Hall of Fame Class on Sept. 13, 2014 during its 27th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony at the Westin Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s four inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. Harry M. Conger III, Günther Franz (Frank) Joklik, Ellen Swallow Richards and Dr. Alfred Weiss will join 223 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Conger was a great role model and strong advocate within Homestake Mining Co. and among his industry peers on behalf of environmentally responsible, safe, profitable and high-performance operations. As chairman and chief executive officer, Conger was instrumental in revitalizing and rebuilding Homestake into an industry leader in technological advances and environmental protection. Through his contributions in exploration, project development and operations management as Kennecott president and chief executive, Joklik did much to strengthen Kennecott as a company and assisted in restoring the competitiveness of the U.S. mining industry. Richards is generally recognized as the founder of ecology. She was the very definition of a pioneer in such diverse fields as chemistry, geology and mineralogy, mining and metallurgy, environmental science, public health, home economics and education. Weiss was a true visionary in using quantitative methods and digital computers to aid mineral exploration, plan and design mines, operate mineral production facilities and integrate the disparate information resources throughout a mining company into a modern management information system. NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman, Paul C. Jones, said, ?Again this year we are honored to be able to induct an outstanding group of deserving individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the mining industry in the United States. Included are two living inductees who have made significant contributions to management in the industry. One inductee was the first female graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, its first female faculty member and the first female member of AIME who had an outstanding career as a mineral investigator in the United States. Another inductee was a lifetime innovator in bringing digital technology into common use in our industry. Each of our 2014 inductees made significant and lasting contributions to our industry and are well deserving of becoming a member of the National Mining Hall of Fame.? Informal gold mining operations in the Amazon emit about 100 tonnes of mercury annually because of poor amalgamation practice. Lack of information and the complexity of mercury transformations hinder effective action to prevent such pollution and/or monitor its extent. In the past, mathematical equations have been formulated to deal with the correlation of natural variables and mercury in biota but often, the error range is too great to provide useful models. Projection of physico-chemical variations in an environment subjected to mercury emissions onto the extent of bioaccumulation is fraught with many uncertainties and unknowns such as internal correlations between variables and the site-specific nature of biota contamination. Often assumptions about closed systems are invalid when applied to natural environments. This work presents a heuristic approach to this problem in which amalgamation methods and natural variables are dealt with using an IF-THEN rule-based system that concludes about levels of emission and risk of bioaccumulation. The system is able to handle uncertain or vague data and yet still provide useful output. Belief in mercury oxidation or dangerous conditions are examined using Fuzzy Logic techniques and Inference Equations. These belief levels are derived from thermodynamic equilibrium data together with field observations of natural variables. This procedure can reduce the need for sophisticated analytical equipment and can provide information and diagnosis to non-technical people.

The Bureau of Mines beneficiated the wastes generated by commercial titanium chlorination operations to reclaim metal values and reduce the problem of disposing of solid wastes. A water leach solubilized about 40 percent of the dry weight and over 75 percent of the metallic impurities. The residue from the water leach was rich in titanium dioxide and carbon; it was combined with rutile and recycled to a laboratory chlorinator. The contained carbon was used in lieu of part of the coke requirement.

Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly 'safe' compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

BESIDES commanding increasing importance as an alloying element in combination with ferrous and other nonferrous metals, the variety of uses for pure nickel continues to widen. For coinage it is growing in popularity. These coins have been minted for 27 countries in 72 issues representing 69 denominations. Approximately 3,000,000,000 pieces have been struck, the aggregate weight, of which amounts to nearly 14,000 tons. . Danzig, Iraq and Japan are the most recent governments to adopt, pure nickel coinage. France is adding the denomination of five francs to its other nickel currency; they replace silver pieces. Germany is now minting a new issue of one Reichsmark coins of pure nickel. The Japanese program for 1933 called for the issue of 35,000,000 10-sen pieces and 30,000,000 5-sen pieces. Explosive properties are typically summarised on manufacturers’ technical data sheets. The values most commonly referred to are the density of the explosive, the energy it is expected to release and its velocity of detonation (VOD). This information is provided so that blasting engineers can make a considered selection of the most appropriate product for a particular blasting application. As an example, a lower VOD and energy product is better suited to blasting in soft, weathered material. In contrast, blasting hard, competent material generally requires a higher energy product which is usually characterised by higher VOD and energy.A review of the technical information supplied by manufacturers shows a wide range of methods of reporting both VOD and energy. A meaningful comparison between products from different suppliers is almost impossible to achieve based on these data. For a similar product, one supplier may have a VOD range of 2800–5800 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 1.34 while a corresponding product from another supplier is quoted with a VOD range of 3100–6300 m/s and a relative bulk strength of 192. In the end, the user has to rely on the level of confidence available from their experience using a certain type of explosive in the type of rock to be blasted at that mine.This paper reviews some of the technical and supporting information that is freely available in the literature and attempts to provide some clarity as to what the numbers that are reported actually mean for the end user. H ELIUM (chemical symbol: He) is a member of a family of normally gaseous elements, which, because of their zero valence and corresponding lack of chemical activity, are called the "noble" or "inert" gases. It is a monatomic element with an atomic number of 2, and it exists naturally in two stable isotopic forms-He3, with an atomic mass of 3.0170, and He4, with an atomic mass of 4.0039. With the exception of a trace (10-6 percent) of He3, all of the naturally occurring helium is He4. Two unstable isotopes-He5, with atomic mass 5.0137, and He6, with atomic mass 6.0208-are listed by various scientists, but the existence of He5 is questioned by some of them. He6 is radioactive, with a half-life of 0.8 second. Helium was discovered in 1868 in the gaseous atmosphere surrounding the sun. Although several scientists studied the solar chromosphere that year, it is generally agreed that J. Norman Lockyer of England should be credited with the discovery of helium, which he named, deriving the word from "helios," the Greek name for the sun. It was not found on earth until March 1895, when William Ramsay of London produced a small amount from a sample of cleveite, a uranium-bearing mineral. In 1905, H. P. Cady and D. F. McFarland of Kansas found helium in natural gas produced from a well near Dexter, Kans., and for the first time a large source of helium became available.
