During the past 20 years, methods of multivariate statistical analysis have been developed on mainframe computers for the integration of geological, geophysical, geochemical and LANDSAT data in mineral resource appraisal. At present, it is becoming increasingly feasible to perform mathematical image analysis of digitized patterns on microcomputers. This has led us to develop a new method of statistical pattern integration for mineral exploration. In this paper, the new method is used to outline, by means of posterior probabilities, exploration targets within small areas of which the prior probabilities for occurrence of new mineral deposits had been estimated by multivariate analysis.

This project was developed at the PCS Phosphate Mine in Aurora, NC. This site includes a surface mining operation, beneficiation plant and chemical processing facility located in the coastal plain of eastern North Carolina. The phosphate ore being mined at this operation is a 10 to 12 meter (35 to 40 foot) thick colloidal deposit located approximately 30 meters (100 feet) below the ground surface. The ore is pumped to the beneficiation facility where it is separated into clay, sand and concentrate streams. The concentrate product is utilized at the chemical plants to produce a wide range of products including fertilizer, industrial phosphates and animal feed products. The Cyclone Dike Builder (CDB) project developed a technique for dewatering the beneficiation tailing sand stream and providing innovative placement for dike construction. Future material balance requirements at the PCS Phosphate mine required an improvement in tailing sand placement technique to accomplish strategic objectives. The water volume of the sand slurry forces significant quantities of sand out of the dike profile during deposition. PCS Phosphate and MetPro Supply of Florida developed a mobile high-density hydro-cyclone station to remove most of the water and significantly increase the density of the sand being placed for dike construction. This high-density sand slurry is then effectively controlled using minimal heavy equipment operation.

"In this paper, the most significant environmental aspects that are identified in the Taft Copper Project (TCP) are the quality and quantity of water, pollution of the existing watercourses and post-mining land use, matters such as air and noise pollution are deemed to be of less significance. Analysis has been performed for Do Nothing Alternative, Pre-stripping Phase, Mining Phase, Closure and After-use Phases. Analysis of the environmental assessment of TCP was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the general negative and positive aspects of the project were identified. In the second stage the intensity, magnitude and significance of the environmental impacts of the project were identified. The third stage is related to the final conclusions of the assessment team and the relevant reasoning. A modified Leopold Matrix was adopted for evaluating the significance and magnitude of the environmental impacts. For this project, the matrix was modified to allow the assessor to take account of negative and positive numbers."

More than 80% of U.S. roof bolts are fully-grouted, but about 1500 roof falls are reported each year. Anchorage failure of a fully grouted bolt can occur when the roof is active near the top of the hole. This paper reports on an extensive series of short-encapsulation pull tests (in which the bolts are installed with only 1 ft of resin) that were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) Mine Safety Research Laboratory and operating mines in WV and PA. The tests confirmed that poor anchorage can been countered under some weak rock conditions. Suggestions for improving anchorage are included.

Hydrogeological impacts of active longwall mining were studied at two sites in Illinois. At the site with the more transmissive sandstone aquifer, aquifer permeabilities increased an order of magnitude due to subsidence. Piezometric levels declined with subsidence due to increased porosity, and ahead of mining due to a transmitted drawdown. Levels recovered rapidly at first and fully over two years. At the site with the less transmissive aquifer, impacts were similar except that recovery has been limited. Local aquifer enhancement through increased yield can occur, but only where the aquifer is transmissive enough for recovery.

Mine productivity, measured by the output of minerals per manshift, depends on a number of factors including physical conditions of the minable seam, type of mining equipment, management techniques, worker attitudes and governing jaws and regulations. The greatest scope of improving productivity lies, perhaps, in modifying physical conditions to an advantage and using highly productive equipment. In the case of coal mines, increased productivity can be achieved by (i) obtaining prior knowledge of the mineable property, e.g., the grade and thickness of, the coal seam, presence of sand channels, faults, etc., (ii) eliminating conditions that hamper production, e.g., high emissions of methane and water, and (iii) using more productive mining techniques. Conoco/Consol's (Conoco Inc. and Consolidation! bal Company, a fully-owned subsidiary) horizontal drilling system was developed with the hove objectives in mind. It can drill 75 to 1001 in diameter boreholes to depths of more than 600 1 and maintain the borehole in a preselected horizon. Such boreholes can be utilized for premining exploration of the coal seam, for removing methane and water and in devising mining techniques with high productivity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the horizontal drilling system briefly and to discuss its applications in the above-mentioned- areas.

Deep well disposal is a much used and abused term which is the panacea for wastewater disposal in some minds and creates near hysteria in others. It can be the answer to a difficult waste disposal problem, or if improperly employed, can create more problems than it solves. My purpose in this presentation is to focus on the value and limitations of deep well disposal as expressed by New York State's experience and policies. To he sure, I feel a place for such practices docs exist if adequate safeguards are utilized. I shall give a broad brush approach to New York's legislative, geologic and operational concerns and speak briefly on some case histories. I shall not delve deeply into the technological details since I am not an expert in mining exploration or well drilling.

Introduction Recognition of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) as a major occupational disease has affected various aspects of the coal mining industry in the United States as well as in almost all major coal producing countries. Regulations related to the control of coal mine dust forced mine operators to modify their mining and ventilation practices. As the coal production record of the last 15 years shows, this had both direct and indirect impacts on the productivity and production costs. To identify the causes of CWP, many research efforts have been made through- out the world. Most of these studies were epidemiological in nature, attempting to pinpoint exposure and seam variables that affected the incidence of the disease. Other studies have been oriented toward the elemental and mineralogical composition of the coal dust in the mine atmosphere and in the miners' lungs. These studies indicate that there may exist some relationships between the characteristics of the coal mine dust and the prevalence of the disease. Some of the variables that are thought to affect the occurrence of CWP are the mass of the dust in the working place, the rank of the coal, the existence of certain trace elements, the free silica content of the coal, and the existence of other minerals in the respirable dust. A more complete description of these previous re- search studies has appeared elsewhere (Mutmansky and Lee, 1984). The behavior of particles in the human lung is known to be governed by their aerodynamic diameter, which is defined as the diameter of a hypothetical spherical particle with unit density that exhibits the same settling velocity as the given particle. Because of this fact, the aerodynamic size distribution of coal mine dust is one of the parameters to be determined along with the other physical, elemental, and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a strategy for providing coal mine respirable dust samples for characterization purposes using instruments that classify according to the aerodynamic diameter. INTRODUCTION The accomplishment of a well engineered design, and the realization of efficient plant operation cannot be achieved without weaving a web of safety consciousness from the beginning of the project. When the plant becomes operational, and throughout its life, responsibility safety will rest with the client or operator. Recognition of this understanding does not reduce the importance of the engineering and construction contractor's role, but merely puts the responsibility where it belongs. A project which has had little or no operator input during the early stages of design is almost certain to have serious work place safety, health, and environmental problems in spite of the fact that all MSHA and OSHA design requirements were met and the engineering was performed using accepted practices. DEFINITIONS The author has a personal preference in safety definitions that begins and ends with simplicity. If the safety criteria, program, and rules are confusing or complex, the results will soon become obvious. Confusing and complex are the key elements in the avoidance of responsibility and if punitive is added to the list, a brew exists which breeds accidents, illness, and poor performance. A safely designed and operated plant is one that a worker can journey to each day; leaving that person and his or her family with the above average expectation that the person will return healthy, emotionally intact, and hopefully a little wealthier. A year ago, if I had the pleasure of addressing you, I would have discussed ocean mineral resources from a promotional standpoint. I would have described exciting indications of mammoth tonnages of sea-floor industrial minerals. I would have attempted to fire your imaginations as to the potential of a nation having the technologic know-how to exploit its submerged boundaries. As a first step toward this capability, I would have solicited your support for a Bureau of Mines? program aimed at determining the industrial worth of marine minerals and devising techniques and hard- ware for their recovery. We still need your support, but recently we have ventured out of the realm of planning and into your Government's first program in marine mineral engineering. Today, I wish to describe what we have done within the framework of existing research problems and our possible goals. I will be brief so as to allow ample time for questions, and I can do this with confidence because our program is so new that I need not be chagrined at not having all the answers.

Equations developed by an early researcher in subsidence, F. Martos of Budapest, Hungary, have been slightly modified to produce effective equations for predicting the time-dependent nature of Green River trona mine subsidence. Following the initial study, a survey was run to check the results twenty years after mining of the area had been completed. The final results were within a few centimeters of the value that had been projected. Mining conditions in the Green River area are ideal for this sort of study with trough type subsidence being the surface manifestation of high extraction underground room and pillar caving operations.

When OSHA came into existence in 1970, it adopted national consensus standards to improve safety and health conditions in work places. Coke oven emissions, which are proven to cause cancer and respiratory diseases, were regulated by the coal tar pitch volatile standard, adopted from the 1969 edition of the Threshold Limit Values for Airborne Contaminants by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. The coal tar pitch standard, based upon the benzene soluble fraction of total particulates, limits the personal exposure to 200 micrograms of the benzene soluble fractions of total particulate per cubic meter of air. This standard can be classified as a performance standard because only general limits are set which allows the employer to choose for themselves the means to comply. Both the United Steelworkers of America and the American Iron and Steel Institute petitioned the Secretary of Labor to write a new standard for coke oven missions, each thinking the coal tar pitch standard unsatisfactory.

Microcystaline silica has been mined in Illinois from the Clear Creek formation since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Tamms in Alexander County, in the southernmost part of the state. Production of this silica, consumed mainly by the abrasives and coatings industries but also sought after for many filler/extender uses, has grown with the economy with several new applications overshadowing traditional markets in recent years. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey and a very complete report was issued in 1953 (Report of Investigations No. 166), authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the silica ore has changed very little since the first reported production in 1906, although emphasis has been placed on the production of the finer sized grades to meet newer market requirements. Industrial Mineral Notes 40, published by the Illinois State Geological Survey in June 1970, describes a method by which a less than 1-micron fraction could be commercially produced from the readily available finest commercial grade presently being marketed (99% minus 10 microns). The finer grades exhibit to a lesser degree the reinforcement, high flatting efficiency, thickening and dry brightness properties associated with the synthetically produced silicas. It is expected that the extremely fine grades of microcrystaline silica will become accepted in the markets that now use a combination of precipitated silica and less expensive extender/filler minerals such as kaolin or calcium carbonate.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

Profitable marketing of most minerals is dependent upon the total delivered cost to the user. Transportation costs are often greater than the value of the mineral f.o.b. the mine or processing facility. In some cases, transportation costs are three to five times the mineral cost. For many years, transportation costs were controlled by a complex system involving the transportation companies and supervised by regulatory agencies. This paper will deal with the effects of deregulation on rail costs and outline the major changes in transportation economics.

Any discussion of barite mining is virtually impossible without considering, almost in the same breath, the many other variables, such as beneficiation, transportation, infrastructure and location that impact the economics of a particular barite orebody. My comments will be limited to just the mining aspects of barite orebodies and these observations must be considered in proper context with all other parameters affecting exploitation of a barite property prior to final decision on economic feasibility. In many instances low-cost mining situations are more than offset by high-cost beneficiation requirements. Likewise, there are cases of relatively high-cost mining associated with no or low-cost beneficiation requirements thus permitting economic exploitation. Barite orebodies and occurrences are almost as varied as the number of occurrences. As in most mining situations, the design of a mine plan and implementation of a proper exploitation program must be approached on a case by case basis. Proper and sufficient geologic control of a barite orebody must precede the development of a mine plan. Generally speaking, barite orebodies can and, at many times, do "strange" things; pinch with depth; almost never increase in size with depth, overturn, fault-off, change grade, etc. Due to the extreme variable nature of most barite orebodies, a mine plan and its implementation must be as flexible as possible. The ability to quickly adapt to variable conditions will greatly enhance the economics within a particular barite mining environment.

The computation of hydrometallurgical equilibria is very difficult because of the many complex species in solution, the precipitates, condensed species, or solids, and the activity coefficient corrections necessary to non-ideal thermodynamics. Our objective was to tryout recently developed genetic algorithms to minimize free energy and solve the equilibrium computation. We selected test problems that were seemingly unsolvable with more traditional algorithms, and we applied genetic algorithms to them. We were pleased to find that genetic algorithms succeeded where other algorithms did not. We concluded that they are an effective tool for hydrometallurgical equilibria.

The announcement of a high-grade ore intercept near Wenatchee, Chelan County, WA, by Asamera Minerals in 1983 triggered widespread interest in this old gold mining district. The district has a long history of exploration and production and was actually one of the few underground gold mines that operated in the post World War I1 years in the US. Gold occurs in a north-trending structural zone in folded and faulted Eocene arkose intruded by andesite and dacite dikes having dates in the 42 to 50 m.y. range. Ore has been mined selectively from ladder veins perpendicular to the trend, from the south end of the trend near Squilchuck Creek. These veins narrow and silicification becomes pervasive northerly where wider zones were caved later in the operation. Recent discoveries at "B" reef at the north end are also in wide zones of silicified arkose. The gold lodes originally cropped out as prominent silicified and iron-stained ridges that were described in the early days as "reefs." The early discoveries were made in out- crop about a hundred years ago, and two claims, the Gold King and Macbeth lodes, covering the most prominent out- crops on the north side of Squilchuck Creek, were staked in 1885 and patented shortly thereafter. A five stamp mill was erected in 1894, but failed to liberate gold for amalgamation. The two patented claims were acquired in 1934 by J. Keegan, who carried out limited exploration and shipped small amounts of flux ore to Tacoma during the next few years. There was no substantial exploration or development of the claims, however, for several years after that time, and ownership of the claims eventually passed to a series of trusts administered by a bank in Seattle.

Injection of alkaline waste-lime slurry was performed at a West Virginia surface coal mine site, to attempt neutralization of acid springs by an alkaline recharge method. Deep trenching (>5 m) using an excavator yielded the most effective injection into the aquifer. Water from two springs, 90 m from the deep trench, showed 70%-80% reduction in acidity in response to injection. Neutralization persisted >170 days after treatment, with pH between 5.1-5.7 and metal acidity from 25-60 mg/L. A minor fraction of lime introduced was consumed. The sustained neutralization is attributed to reaction of acid water with subsurface lime, entrained below the wafer table by macropore infiltration. Characteristics of groundwater transport are critical in determining recharge structure location.

A ferrous chloride-oxygen leaching system was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a means of re-covering copper and silver from a sulfide concentrate that had been pretreated to remove a majority of the antimony. The pretreated concentrate contained Cu, Ag, Pb, Zn, Sb, and As. Parameters affecting metal extraction, such as temperature, pressure, amount of ferrous chloride, and initial hydrogen ion concentration, were studied. Copper extraction of 98 pct was achieved by leaching 4 hours at 40 pounds per?square inch gage (psig) and 1000 ?C. Copper was recovered from leach solutions by cementation with iron, and the resulting ferrous chloride was recycled. Leaching the residue with cyanide followed by electrowinning recovered 99.7 pct of the silver. Iron, Sb, As, Pb, and S reported to the tails.
