The US economy grew at a rate of 4% in 1994 and the gross domestic product rose to $6.74 trillion. With 261 million people - 605,000 in mining, including petroleum -the United States has l 10 million dwelling units and 200 million licensed motor vehicles. New private housing units authorized in 1994 rose 14% to 1.4 million units. New car production rose 11 % to 6.6 million units, while truck and bus production rose 30% to 5.2 million units. The inflation rate was less than 3% and the prime rate of interest averaged 7.15%. The producer price index (1982 = 100) for fuels and related products and power was down 4% to 78, while metals and metal products rose 5% to 125. Chemicals and allied products rose 3% to 132, and non-metallic mineral products rose 3% to 124. The merchandise trade deficit rose 25% to $166 billion. Disorder in the former Soviet Union led to substantial dumping of mineral materials. With vast mineral resources, the former Soviet Union land area totaled 22.4 million km2 (8.6 million sq miles). In comparison, the North Ameri¬can Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) area (United States, Canada and Mexico) totals 21.4 million km2 (8.3 million sq miles).

The drill-and-shoot excavation of the two underground Pumphouses for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Mainstream Pumping Station is described. The construction sequence involved the concurrent excavation and support of the two 19.2 m (63 feet) wide by 83.6 m (274 feet) long by 29.3 m (96 feet) high caverns. Excavation was interrupted after taking the 6.1 m (20 feet) high top heading in order to cast-in-place a 0.2 m (8 inch) thick by 19.2 m (63 feet) wide concrete arch. The remaining 23.3 m (76 feet) of rock was then excavated in benches below the concrete arch. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Twenty-four kilometers (15 miles) southwest of the city of Chicago, Peter Kiewit Sons' Co., in a joint venture with John F. Shea Co., and Kenny Construction Co., has successfully completed the construction of the Mainstream Pumping Station for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. The five year, 169 millon dollar project is a vital component in Chicago's Deep Tunnel and Reservoir Plan in that its function is to lift the sanitary/ storm sewage back up to grade from 107 m (350 feet) below ground, and pump it to the treatment facilities 8 km (5 miles) away.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 km. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fiber in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd., of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This chapter presents the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits are outlined. Subsequent work by other companies is mentioned, but not de- scribed in detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. who have been involved in the project. In particular, thanks go to Ramon Farmer, N.G. Corner, and A.W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this chapter are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in the discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program. REGIONAL SETTING Ultramafic rocks on the South Island of New Zealand are thought to be Permian in age and occur between crystaIline and metamorphic continental rocks of Precambrian through Cretaceous age in the west, are thought to have once been part of the Antarctic subcontinent, and the extensive geosynclinal graywacke deposits of the Mesozoic New Zealand geosyncline in the east. They consist of the Dun Mountain ultramafics, a 130 km long segment of ultramafic rocks located at the north end of the South Island, and the Red Mountain ul- tramafics that occur in a zone 200 km long in the south half of the South Island as shown in Fig. 1. These two belts, once contiguous, have been offset a distance of 560 km by the still active Al- pine fault, which is analogous in character and offset to the San Andreas fault of the United States. The ultramafic rocks occur within a sequence of Permotriassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that probably formed at the eastern margin of the continental plate. The ultramafics appear to be tectonically emplaced between Permian lithologies in the Dun Mountain belt (Coleman, 1966), and at the base of or between Permian volcanics and sediments in the Red Mountain belt. The Permotriassic ultramafic volcanic sequence of the Red Mountain ultramafic belt appears to be a typical ophiolite sequence. Ultramafic rocks, mixed mafic intrusive rocks and volcanics, volcanic rocks, and volcanoclastic sediments occur in apparent superposition from east to west in the area of Red Mountain. Farther south, ultramafic rocks are associated with basaltic volcanic rocks and some sediments, and still farther south are emplaced entirely in sediments. These structural compIications of the normal ophiolite sequence have resulted from the coincidence of Permian subduction, early Mesozoic extension and sedimentation, and Cretaceous subduction along the same plate margin (Landis and Bishop, 1972). This investigation involves the development of a two-dimensional continuum model for the description of jointed media. Specific application of the model developed here is for the potential geological disposal of radioactive waste in the layered sequence of fractured volcanic tuffs under Yucca Mountain, Nevada. This is currently being considered by the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, administered by the Nevada Operations Office of the U. S. Department of Energy. The work is a direct extension of the previous constitutive model by Thomas (1982) based on the work of Morland (1974). The main feature of Thomas's model includes two parts: a continuum approximation based on average discontinuous displacements across jointing planes within a representative elementary volume, and a material constitutive description based on linear elastic matrix material behavior and nonlinear normal and shear joint behavior between jointing planes. The mathematical descriptions by Morland based on strain partitioning among matrix material and joint sets allow multiple joint sets to be included in the model. However, the initial effort by Thomas to implement Morland's mathematical model included only a single set of joints. To make the material model reflect more realistically the field characteristics, the current work extended Thomas's model to include orthogonal sets of joints. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior is retained in the present model. Joint shear response was treated as linear elastic in the shear stress versus shear displacement relationship prior to attaining the stress level governed by the Coulomb friction criterion. Beyond this critical stress value, a horizontal line is assumed in the work of Thomas for the shear stress versus slip displacement relationship such that the shear stress remains constant while the slip displacement increases. Motivated by experimental observation, the current work generalized the shear response to allow a line with finite slope to govern the slip behavior beyond the critical stress level. The inclusion of an orthogonal joint set led to a fourth order algebraic equation for the calculation of stress increments as compared with a second order equation obtained by Thomas. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior provides criteria which allow the selection of the root that yields result consistent with the loading condition of the problem. The addition of one more set of joints provides the potential to more completely study the interaction of various parameters representing the characteristics of jointed media behavior. Material responses to various loading conditions based on the present constitutive model have been obtained. These results and their comparisons to single joint set results are presented. Investigation of the traps in LiF:Mg, a multi-peak phosphor, was carried out using simple phosphorescence decay analysis. Half lives at room temperature of the trapping centres (peaks -lb, -la, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3a and 3) in the phosphor after irradiation with [a] radiation were found to be 3 s, 5 s, 28 s, 4 min, 15 min, 1 h, 6 h and 2 d respectively. Justification for the method of analysis is pro- vided and the results of measurements compared with published data. The effects of pre-annealing at 400°C for 1 h and 80°C for 24 h on the trapping configuration and on the trapping efficiencies were also studied.

An investigation of the oxidation reactions of two industrial copper mattes was performed using dflerential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at heating rates of 20°C and 8°C/min, respectively. The temperature of incipient reaction, the total exothermic and endothermic heats of reaction and the weight change during the oxidation process were measured as functions of the oxygen concentration in the oxidizing gas, matte grade and matte particle size. The temperatures of incipient reaction measured from the DSC experiments were found to increase monotonically with all three input variables. TGA experiments showed that Cu2O and CuO CuSO4 are formed before the complete oxidation of Cu2S to CuO.

Industrial minerals are just other rocks, except for the unique characteristics that make them useful in an industrial process. There is not a ready market for this type mineral and one or more uses must be developed to sustain production. The name "olivine" is a generic term used to indicate a group of orthosilicate minerals in a solid solution series, with forsterite (Mg2SiO4) and fayalite (Fe2SiO4) as endpoints. Since neither is found alone in nature, the mineral is always a combination of the two. The commercial deposits are high in magnesium and on the high end of the melting scale in the series. The name comes from the olive-green color.

In April of 1990, Homestake Mining Company began a 5,100 m (16,700 ft.) exploration drift from the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota. The drift starts from the mine's 6800 level, nearly 2,100 m below the surface, and extends north to further explore occurrences of gold discovered by surface drilling. Access to the North Drift for men and materials and for disposal of waste rock is limited to the Homestake Mine's #6 Winze, which serves as the major production shaft for the deep levels of the mine. This paper will discuss the successes and challenges encountered while managing a tunneling project 2,100 m below the surface and from an active mine.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 m (8 ft) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting. Saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile. This implies that care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a depth of at least 2.4 m (8 ft) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

FMC's Paradise Peak Mine was discovered in July 1983. The deposit at discovery contained 11,340 ,000 tonnes (12,500,000 tons) of ore grading 3.71 glt (0.108 oz/ton) Au and 120 glt (3.5 oz/ton) Ag. A feasibility study was completed by Davy McKee in May 1984, with detailed engineering starting in June 1984. Construction of the facility started on January 2, 1985 with plant start-up taking place on April 14, 1986, two and one half months ahead of schedule and more than 10% under budget. This paper describes the status of the operation approximately 1-1/2 years after start-up including revisions and additions to equipment and process.

Three conditions are required for a risk to be realized: (1) a source of risk (i.e., hazard) must exists (2) some process must take place which will lead to the exposure of people, animals, and/or the environment to the hazard: and (3) as a result of the expense, undesirable effects are produced on the people, animals, and/or the environment. A comprehensive risk assessment addresses all three of the conditions through the following four steps: (1) risk source (hazard) characterization, (2) exposure assessment, (3) dose-response assessment, and (4) risk estimation. Although the terminology may differ, the overall approach of financial, public health, and environmental risk assessments is the same (National Science Foundation, 1985).

Leaching of Shizhuyuan low-grade refractory tungsten ore was carried out in a mechanically activating reactor. The effect of experimental parameters-temperature, amount of Na2C03, addition of NaOH, ratio of liquid to solid and leaching time - on the recovery of WO3 was studied. The WO3 recovery up to 96.99% have been achieved when the tungsten ore was digested by soda not more than three times the stoichiometric amount at 185-195°C for 1 .O-2.0 hours. Iso-extraction countour diagrams were drawn to illustrate the effect of various parameters on leaching. The WO3 recovery could be expected to increase 10-15% compared to that of conventional soda autoclave process.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. ST Equipment & Technology LLC (STET) has developed a novel processing system based on tribo-electrostatic belt separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an energy-efficient and entirely dry technology. In contrast to other electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles >75μm in size, the STET triboelectric belt separator is suited for separation of very fine (<1μm) to moderately coarse (500μm) particles, with very high throughput. The STET tribo-electrostatic technology has been used to process and commercially separate a wide range of industrial minerals and other dry granular powders. Here, bench-scale results are presented on the beneficiation of low-grade Fe ore fines using STET belt separation process. Bench-scale testing demonstrated the capability of the STET technology to simultaneously recover Fe and reject 2 from itabirite ore with a D50 of 60μm and ultrafine Fe ore tailings with a D50 of 20μm.The STET technology is presented as an alternative to beneficiate Fe ore fines that could not be successfully treated via traditional flowsheet circuits due to their granulometry and mineralogy. INTRODUCTION Iron ore is the fourth most common element in earth’s crust [1]. Iron is essential to steel manufacturing and therefore an essential material for global economic development [1-2]. Iron is also widely used in construction and the manufacturing of vehicles [3]. Most of iron ore resources are composed of metamorphosed banded iron formations (BIF) in which iron is commonly found in the form of oxides, hydroxides and to a lesser extent carbonates [4-5]. A particular type of iron formations with higher carbonate contents are dolomitic itabirites which are a product of the dolomitization and metamorphism of BIF deposits [6]. The largest iron ore deposits in the world can be found in Australia, China, Canada, Ukraine, India and Brazil [5]. The chemical composition of iron ores has an apparent wide range in chemical composition especially for Fe content and associated gangue minerals [1]. Major iron minerals associated with most of the iron ores are hematite, goethite, limonite and magnetite [1,5]. The main contaminants in iron ores are 2 and Al2O3 [1,5,7]. The typical silica and alumina bearing minerals present in iron ores are quartz, kaolinite, gibbsite, diaspore and corundum. Of these it is often observed that quartz is the mean silica bearing mineral and kaolinite and gibbsite are the two-main alumina bearing minerals [7]. Iron ore extraction is mainly performed through open pit mining operations, resulting in significant tailings generation [2]. The iron ore production system usually involves three stages: mining, processing and pelletizing activities. Of these, processing ensures that an adequate iron grade and chemistry is achieved prior to the pelletizing stage. Processing includes crushing, classification, milling and concentration aiming at increasing the iron content while reducing the amount of gangue minerals [1-2]. Each mineral deposit has its own unique characteristics with respect to iron and gangue bearing minerals, and therefore it requires a different concentration technique [7].

At the Mount Isa mine, Mount Isa, Qld., Australia, sublevel open-stope mining is used for copper ore while both sublevel open-stope and cut-and-fill methods are used for the silver-lead-zinc ores. Production in 1979¬80 was 4 730 000 t (5,200,000 st) copper ore and 2 590 000 t (2,850,000 st) of lead ore. The deepest mine level currently is 960 m below the surface. GENERAL ORE BODY REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS Size, Shape, and Dip The mine is located in the valley of the Leichhardt River in Lower Proterozoic sediments of the Mount Isa group. The regional strike of the sediments is north¬south and they have a persistent westerly dip of about 1.1 rad (65°). In the mine area, the Mount Isa group comprises a sequence of alternating bands of dolomitic shales and siltstones some 3.2 km (2 miles) in width. It is bounded on the east by greenstones and quartzose sediments of the Eastern Creek volcanics, and on the west by the Mount Isa fault, west of which occur schists and other metamorphic rocks. The ore bodies as currently known at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart shale, a formation of thinly bedded pyritic, dolomitic, and volcanic shales some 1070 m (3500 ft) thick. Towards the top of the Mount Isa group sediments, copper and silver-lead-zinc ore bod¬ies occur as contiguous but discrete entities and are mined and treated separately (see Figs. I and 2). Argentiferous galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and minor associated sulfides occur in distinct concordant bands throughout the Urquhart shales. Wherever these bands are grouped together in sufficient density they constitute silver-lead-zinc ore bodies with widths varying up to 36.6 m (120 ft). Other mineralized bands are common in intervening beds. Individual ore bodies persist for many hundreds of meters concordant with the strike and dip of the enclosing shales. Intersections of these beds with fold axes provide local zones of enrichment but otherwise the mineral content of the ore bodies varies only slightly throughout the extent of the dip and strike. Chalcopyrite is the only important primary copper mineral. It occurs in association with pyrite and pyrrhotite as disseminated flocks and as vein fillings throughout irregularly shaped zones of folded, brecciated, and re¬crystallized Urquhart shale. These zones, which are lo¬cally termed "silica-dolomite" bodies, are broadly transgressive to the shale bedding and confine all significant copper mineralization to the virtual exclusion of silver¬lead-zinc mineralization. In some areas, the downward percolation of acidic water through faults and shears has caused extensive leaching of the coarse-grained carbon¬ates to depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft), but most of the silica-dolomite remains unleached and the ground is competent. The majority of lead ore being mined is north of the main shaft pillar (R62, U62) area. "This paper presents an overview and performance evaluation for a reconditioned decades aged open type hard rock TBM utilized for the twin running tunnel excavations of the Second Avenue Subway Project in Manhattan, New York. The TBM tunnel lengths are approximately 2,370 m (7,800 ft, east TBM Tunnel) and 2,190 m (7,200 ft, west TBM Tunnel) with a 6.7 m (22 ft) bored diameter. This “senior” TBM mined through metamorphic rocks consisting of schist, granofels, and pegmatite, and encountered various adverse geological structures, including some relatively heavy groundwater inflows. The ground support was generally pattern friction rock bolts, and steel sets were used in poor ground. This paper presents TBM characteristics and the subsequent performance, such as machine utilization, downtime, cutter consumption rate, net penetration rate, and daily advance rate. Machine operating parameters including thrust, torque, gripping force, and cutterhead RPM, are compared with various accompanying ground conditions. The performance changes between the adjacent tunnel sections are also presented. INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Capital Construction (MTACC)’s Second Avenue Subway (SAS) Program consists of four (4) phases from 125th Street to Manhattan Battery Park along the 2nd Avenue (see Figure 1) in Manhattan New York. As a part of Phase 1, Contract 1 was awarded to S3 JV (Skanska/Schiavone/Shea) to build a TBM launch box and subsequent twin TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street under 2nd Avenue. Contract 1 was one of the key contracts in Phase 1 to pre-excavate through the footprint of the follow-on underground stations (72nd St. Station, 86th St. Station, and 96th St. Station) by hard rock TBM excavation. The project team included Client MTACC, S3 Tunnel Constructors, Designer, Aecom-Arup JV, and Consultant Construction Manager, Parsons Brinckerhoff. The major elements of Contract 1 included construction of TBM Launch Box supported by secant pile and slurry walls and mining of twin TBM tunnels with a combined tunnel length of approximately 4,560 m (15,000 ft). The dimension of the TBM launch box was approximately 247 m (810 ft) long from 92nd Street to 95th Street, 21 m (70 ft) to 24 m (80ft) wide along the 2nd Avenue, and 18 m (60 ft) to 21 m (70 ft) deep from the ground surface. Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

Using pure albite and quartz minerals, the separation of albite from quartz using mixed cationic/anionic reagent schemes is assessed through Hallimond flotation, zeta potential and diffuse reflectance FTIR studies. The reagent schemes are tested in bench-scale flotation for the separation of albite from Greek Stefania feldspar ore. The single mineral flotation tests showed the feasibility of selective albite flotation from quartz at around pH 2 using a mixture of cationic diamine and anionic sulfonate collectors or a combined cationic-anionic collector of diamine-dioleate. In contrast to the selective flotation response of albite at pH 2, where albite is slightly negatively charged and quartz possess zero charge, the zeta potential and FTIR studies elucidate similar adsorption behavior of mixed collectors on both of the minerals. The infrared spectra not only showed the co-adsorption of anionic sulfonate or oleate with diamine on the surface but also showed that the diamine adsorption increases with the presence of anionic collector. The intrusion of anionic collector in between adjacent surface alkyl ammonium ions decreases electrostatic head-head repulsion, thereby increasing the diamine adsorption by increasing the hydrophobic tail-tail bonds. The discrepancy in the flotation and adsorption results at pH 2 is attributed to the coarse and fine size particles employed in these studies, respectively. The comparable adsorption on fine particles of albite and quartz at pH 2 is explained by the interaction of ammonium ions on silanol groups by hydrogen bonding besides electrostatic interactions. The bench-scale flotation results indeed showed that selective albite flotation takes place only after desliming the feed material. An albite concentrate exceeding 10% (by weight) Na20 is produced from a material containing about 6.5% (by weight) Na20, where an albite product of more than 9% (by weight) Na20 is considered to be valuable. Introduction A new technology is evolving as a result of growing industry and government concerns over the potential impacts of possible airborne emissions from uranium tailings piles. A major component of the technology is the use of earth covers to stabilize the tailings after mill operations have ceased. While various analytical models have been used to predict the thickness of required covers, experimental validation of the models has been necessary. This paper presents the results of a field program to select and test cover material to determine its suitability for eventual reclamation of a currently active tailings pile. The two main criteria guiding the study were the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission radon flux requirements (reduction to less than twice background pre-1979, and to 2 pCi/m2 -sec above background post-1979) and the desire to employ locally available material. The methodology chosen for this study consisted of three main elements: o Determination of the background radon flux. o Determination of the radon flux from the tailings pile. o Experimental determination of the cover material diffusion coefficient and and calculation of cover thickness. The first two elements of the study are relatively straightforward, the last phase is discussed in detail. Background Radon Flux Measurements of radon-222 emanation rates from the surface of the ground were taken at three sampling locations. Samples were collected by means of the accumulator can method described by Wilkening, 1977. Both morning and afternoon samples were collected at each site to obtain an average. The measured fluxes were fairly uniform and did not differ greatly among sites. The overall average flux for all sites was 0.63[+]0.28(o) pCi/m2 -sec. This value is equal to the average radium-226 concentration determined in the soil, thus yielding a one to one ratio of radon-222 emitted (in pCi/m2 -sec) to soil radium content (in pCi/g).
