Froth flotation is now, the most commonly used method for cleaning fine-coal fractions in coal-preparation plants. Past research and industrial practice have demonstrated that froth flotation achieves excellent separation efficiencies for fine coals having only a small fraction of middling particles. However, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply as the concentration of middling particles increases. This is due to the flotation of high-ash particles that have a small amount of hydrophobic coal present at the surface. Because gravity-based processes are much more efficient for the treatment of middlings, the application of centrifugal washing for fine-coal cleaning was studied with an emphasis on the primary cleaning of fine-circuit feed. Results are shown of a parametric study that used a semibatch Falcon centrifugal concentrator. The results of the study revealed that separation performance is a function of particle size, bowl geometry, feed solids content and feed rate.

Results are presented that were gathered during pilot-and field-scale testing of an innovative technology, sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), designed to treat and control acid mine drainage (AMD). The project was performed under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), which is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the U.S. Department of Energy through an Interagency Agreement. The MWTP is implemented by MSE, Technology Applications, Inc., located in Butte, Montana. Sulfate-reducing bacteria, a common group of anaerobic bacteria, produce hydrogen sulfide and bicarbonate when supplied with sources of carbon and sulfate. Hydrogen sulfide reacts with metal ions in AMD, precipitating them as metal sulfides; the bicarbonate serves to help neutralized the drainage. Pilot-scale testing was performed within eight packed-bed reactors at a temperature representative of a field application of this technology in a northern climate, nominally 8°C. The reactors, packed with an organic substrate, were operated continuously in upflow configurations receiving AMD at a flow rate corresponding to a 5-day retention time over a test duration of 60 days. During this time, numerous physical and chemical parameters were monitored. Pilot-scale metal removal efficiencies reached 99% for zinc, 99% for aluminum, 96% for manganese, 98% for cadmium, and 96% for copper. Iron and arsenic removal was not as effective as the aforementioned metals, which was largely attributed to the high levels of iron and arsenic contaminating the organic substrate. Evidence existed that both adsorption and sulfate reduction were occurring within the reactors.

In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.

Spoil instability has been a problem at a coal mine in interior Alaska. Parameters such as original site topography, groundwater conditions, material properties, spoil-pile geometry, geology, permafrost, natural slope instability, changing weather conditions, and dense, near-surface vegetation have interacted to produce unstable slopes. Several failure modes have been identified including deep seated earth block slides, bimodal earth flows, and solifluction. Thawing of permafrost also created conditions where sliding of spoil along the interface separating the spoil and the natural ground surface occurred when the cohesion and the friction angle of that zone was reduced to zero and below 15?respectively.

The use of conventional tailings deposition methods has been the standard for decades. With the need to reduce the impact of mining, alternative methods are considered when expanding or upgrading tailings handling systems. Converting an existing tailings management system to a more sustainable deposition method during the operation of a mine may incur considerable operational and financial risk, and when assessed more traditionally, does not provide significant advantages. As a result, most mines choose to continue their current technology and add an additional pumping stage or pumpstation to their tailings line in case of a pipeline extension or Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) expansion. This also often involves raising embankments. Changing pumping technology is traditionally assessed by comparing the energy efficiency of current and prospective pumping technology. Despite a reduction in absorbed power, this traditional assessment does not include possible savings in water and the carbon footprint. With the consideration of all these three aspects, alternative pump technologies, such as Positive Displacement (PD) technology, become more economically feasible, providing increased sustainability and enable a site to future-proof their operations. Project feasibility may be affected by the high capital investment required for PD pumps. The benefit of applying PD pumping technology could be enhanced by reducing the volumetric throughput of the pipeline by dewatering the tailings to 65% solids concentration by weight. It was found that despite increasing capital expenditure, the improved reclamation of water will have a positive effect on the direct and indirect cost of fresh water intake to mine operations. This paper seeks to illustrate that in many applications the long-term benefits of investing in sustainable tailings management are optimized when more efficient PD pumping technology is combined with tailings dewatering when upgrading or expanding the tailings handling system.

Silicon Valley Clean Water signed a progressive-design-build (PDB) contract with Barnard Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV) to design and construct the Gravity Pipeline tunnel in Redwood City, CA. Owner and Design-Builder teamed with designer Arup to provide a final product: 3.3 miles of 182 in. O.D. precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel with 10 ft. and 11 ft. I.D. Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) carrier pipe, complete with two FRPM Drop Structures. BBJV and Arup collaborated with SVCW to evaluate alternative design concepts, negotiate an agreeable price and reduce contingencies through a transparent estimating process, and deliver the project ahead of schedule.

Current scrubber capacities vary from 1.89 to 4.72 m3/s (4,000 to 10,000 cfm), and there is interest in using scrubbers with capacities up to 6.61 m3/s (14,000 cfm). This paper describes research to compare the effectiveness of blowing and exhausting face ventilation systems using high-capacity scrubbers with flows up to 6.61 m3/s. Tests were conducted in a surface ventilation gallery with exhaust and blowing systems operating under similar conditions. The mining machine was equipped with a machine-mounted scrubber. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face and measured at several face locations. Effectiveness of exhausting and blowing systems was compared by determining average face methane concentrations. For each operating condition tested, blowing ventilation was more effective than exhausting for controlling face methane levels. Raising scrubber flow to 6.61 m3/s reduced methane levels for both blowing and exhausting systems.

New developments of the NDPS are discussed with emphasis on the "toxic" or priority pollutants and EPA's philosophy on the control of these pollutants, The protection of groundwater is the prime aim of RCRA through solid/hazardous waste management. Some of the major elements of the RCA regulations that will affect the copper leaching industry are discussed.

Throughout the world, sedimentary basins are exploited for many different minerals. Frequently, the extractive methods conflict with one another. A case in point is the proximity of oil and gas operations and the mining of coal. Generally, the interference between the two industries lies in the fact that the reserves over- lie or underlie one another. Mining of coal generally is developed on a rectangular pattern in a horizontal mode while oil and gas drilling is developed on a radial pattern in a vertical mode. Coal mining has exhausted vast acreages in various basins with many of those basins being drilled for oil and gas. Those existing wells create problems by requiring the unrecoverable coal pillars to support the well bore, or to make special provisions in order to mine through an existing well. The system works ... more or less; but there are little or no provisions made for additional drilling unless the vast majority of those new wells are drilled through mined-out sections (gob) of those mines. Many states have rules and regulations governing the drilling of oil and gas wells through gob; but, some companies and some regulatory agencies or personnel have deemed such drilling as a hazard to the mining operations. This paper explores the history, technical standards, and safety aspects of drilling oil and gas wells though the gob of worked-out and active mines. It is the opinion of the author that such drilling can be conducted safely while eliminating the re- quired changes in mine projections and the loss of recoverable coal in the form of well pillars.

During the ten year span from 1978 to 1987, the number of fires which occurred in under-ground coal mines doubled from the previous ten years. Anyone involved with underground coal mines is well aware of the associated tragedy that can result from these fires, both to personnel and to property. Every day mine management and mining personnel face this threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. As a direct result of the ever-increasing interest in the Mine Emergency Preparedness Program and the Mine Fire Training Programs currently being conducted, the Emergency Preparedness Center was created. As a branch of the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University, the Center provides preparedness training at several different levels on a varying range of topics. Classes are conducted at a new especially-designed training laboratory at the National Mine Safety & Health Academy in West Virginia. By maintaining the proper equipment and levels of training allowing for immediate response, the personnel who are part of the Center believe that the impact of a mine fire or other such emergency situation can be minimized. This paper will present recommendations for maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness program and will provide information regarding the Mine Fire Training Program as conducted by the Emergency Preparedness Center and describe the advantages of the newly constructed training facility.

As a longwall coalface advances a caved goaf or waste region is left behind. Air flow takes place through this permeable goaf due to the pressure differentials existing across it and en route this leakage air picks up both heat and moisture. A marked deterioration in climatic conditions occurs in the face area at all points downstream of where this leakage air rejoins the main air-stream. This goaf heat source can make a very significant contribution, typically 30-40% to the rate of total heat pickup on an advancing UK longwall coalface with a VST of 40°C and hence on the climatic conditions that prevail at the return end and in the return gate of the face. The magnitude of the rate of heat collection from the goaf depends on a number of factors but it has been established that it is particularly influenced by the prevailing virgin rock temperature and the total flow rate of the leakage air. This paper proposes a model for the goaf based on a packed bed analogy and other assumptions required in order to evaluate the rate of heat pickup are identified. The outlet condition of the leakage air predicted by the model have been shown to correlate with underground measurements taken for a range of different production patterns with the face cutter at various locations on the face. The sensitivity of these predictions to variations in the input data has been tested and is commented on. At this stage of the development the capabilities and predictive limitations of the model are discussed. Further areas of investigation are suggested in order to improve the predictive ability and to extend the versatility of the model.

It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian Region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modelled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

In the Fort Union formation of western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming there are immense tonnages of lignite and subbituminous coal that have not yet been evaluated in terms of present economic conditions. Continued expansion of United States energy requirements has focused ever increasing attention on this tremendous resource, particularly as efficiency in mining and transporting of coal, as well as in electrical energy generation and transmission have improved and as hydrogenation and gasification of coal approach economic feasibility. This "total energy" concept for coal includes all of the energy uses that coal offers and has resulted in mergers of oil and coal companies and acquisition of coal re- serves by oil companies, as well as by coal companies and others. There is no doubt that these coals are entering an exciting new era of exploration and development that will result in greatly increased production. As a matter of fact, increased consumption for energy generation is well under way and recognition of the economic feasibility of high-Btu pipeline gas and synthetic petroleum products from coal is imminent. As coal is gradually displaced in steam electric generation by the more exotic fuels and processes, it will be increasingly used as raw material for the synthetic petro-chemical industry and the organic chemical industry.

The effect of various flotation depressants and surface treatments on the floatability of coal derived pyrites in the presence of XIBC was investigated with a modified Hallimond tube microflotation cell. The floatability of pyrite particles which had been cleaned with hot dilute (5%) hydrochloric acid was relatively large. However, the floatability of such particles was reduced greatly by the addition of specific depressants such as calcium hydroxide and also by treating the pyrite with an aerated warm alkaline solution. Although this treatment and these depressants also had some effect on the floatability of coal particles, the effect was much less than on the pyrite particles.

This paper presents the results of a parametric study of the influence of natural features (stress field, rock strength, and strength and orientation of fractures) as well as the influence of induced features (undercut span, boundary slot, and other boundary-weakening measures) on the cavability of an undercut block of ore in mining by the block-caving method. The two-dimensional finite element analysis technique was used for this study. A coarse "mesh," along with linear homogeneous assumptions for rock properties, was used to model the problem of initiation of caving in a block of ore. Interpretation of the test results suggests that weakening the "abutments" of the block as well as certain orientations of natural fractures exercise significant influence on cavability. These findings hold promise for immediate application to known situations in block-caving mines.

Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. To protect mine personnel and moving equipment at underground roof fall areas, mine operators typically install steel sets, which are covered with wooden blocks and backfilled with an expanding-type cement material. In large roof falls, the cost of void backfilling becomes prohibitively high, causing some mines to leave the voids open. However, the durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel set and wood lagging to resist falling rock are unknown. This has caused concern for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and ground control engineers. During the last few years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC developed various impact-resistant steel set designs that were approved by MSHA and installed in various underground fall rehabilitations. This paper presents an impact-resistant steel set design methodology, including (1) steel set design per AISC national standard, (2) design, development and laboratory testing of a waterproof coated impact-resistant lagging panel and (3) impactresistant steel set design based on the law of conservation of energy. Two underground cases will be included detailing the application of the system.
