The lack of metrics to assess clamshell formation dredgeability limits the ability of engineers to predict the dredgeability of compact material and increases the risks associated with clamshell selection. Research is needed to develop metrics for predicting clamshell dredgeability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate possible metrics to predict the dredgeability of compact aggregates by hydraulically actuated clamshell dredges. Data on cylinder pressures and displacements, motor current, bucket tilt and cycle time (CT) were collected from a dredge. Work done and motor energy, potential metrics, were computed and their suitability in predicting dredgeability evaluated. Data analysis shows that; there is no correlation between tilt angle and work done or motor energy; a low correlation between CT and work done, and a strong correlation between CT and motor energy. Work done is a better measure of formation dredgeability, than motor energy, as it shows lower variability. However, in difficult digging conditions, work done alone does not accurately predict dredgeability. This work shows that, it is feasible to use cylinder pressures and motor signals data to predict dredgeability.

Vehicle fires in underground mines pose a certain risk for which measures to prevent or mitigate the fires are highly important. Fire protection measures can be divided into active and passive measures, where active measures require an external power to work in the event of a fire, and passive measures could include an existing partition preventing fire spread. As passive fire protection does not rely on activation, it is expected to provide high reliability and a robust solution, and should be considered during the design process. This paper investigates passive fire protection measures that could be implemented in the design of mining vehicles. It was found that passive fire protection should include the use of several measures simultaneously to ensure fire protection throughout the different phases of a fire. Threshold distances for fuel components were calculated, and it was found that combining hydraulic hoses and electrical cables resulted in larger threshold distances. A pool fire along the underside of a vehicle will pose a certain risk, and passive measures should be focused on ignition prevention, making high demands on the insulation/shielding along the underside. Any occurring tire fire may pose a challenge, and the priority should be on preventing ignition. Potential measures include shielding the wheelhouse and applying fire-resistant sealings.

Trialkylphosphine sulphides, in contrast to their well known oxide analogues (1,2,3,4), have received comparatively little attention as metal extractants and previous studies have been biased toward analytical rather than commercial solvent extraction applications (5,6,7). The sulphides are soft Lewis bases and only from complexes readily with the limited number of metals in the periodic table which can be classified as soft acids (8) e.g. Ag+, Hg2+ and Pd2+. Consequently, these compounds tend to be more selective than the broad-spectrum, hard-base, phosphine oxide extractants such-as TOPO (trioctylphosphine oxide). The purpose of this paper is to describe a potential application of one phosphine sulphide, CYANEX® 471X extractant, in the selective recovery of silver from base metal sulphate solutions. CYANEX 471X is triisobutylphosphine sulphide (TIBPS).

The deterioration rate of any metal or alloy is increased in a erosion-corrosion application because the passivated surface layer is removed by the solid particles contained in the pumping fluid and the material surface becomes corrosion active again. Numerous attempts were made to engineer a stainless steel with higher hardness and unaffected corrosion performance. Alloys of special interest in such an area are the duplex stainless steels particularly the CD4MCu material which has the capability of being hardened due to its ferrite-austenite microstructure. Unfortunately, the CD4MCu with higher hardness comprises different intermetallic compounds which will increase the corrosion rate. The paper is analyzing the erosion-corrosion performance of a new type CD4MCu with 32% higher hardness and superior wear performance. The corrosion performance of this new alloy is better than the corrosion performance of the common CD4MCu material which the industry could supply. The corrosion effectiveness was evaluated with the Huey test, the potentio-dynamic anodic polarization test and the weight loss test whereas the erosion resistance was established with a low stress ball-on-disk type apparatus. The Wilfley hard CD4MCu material had 39% lower weight loss and 32% smaller volume loss than the common CD4MCu alloy The hardness range of the centrifugal pump parts poured and processed with the Wilfley hard CD4MCu is 320-350 HBN versus 250-255 HBN hardness of the common CD4MCu. After approximately 18 months of experimentation and field testing it was clearly established that the life time of the Wilfley hard CD4MCu is higher than the common CD4MCu and consequently centrifugal pumps were supplied to different customers in North and South America. Naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in water from inactive mines and several wells in the Keystone area of the Black Hills. Keystone City Well #4 showed a total arsenic concentration of 69 parts per billion (ppb) during pumping in 2004. The well is not used currently except for arsenic-removal research. Water also can be pumped from a mine shaft in the abandoned Keystone ? Columbia ? Bullion gold mines, whose interconnected workings flooded after mining ceased in the 1930s. This water has been considered for local supplies, although it would require treatment or blending because of arsenic concentrations. According to historical records, the Bullion Mine produced 100,000 pounds of white arsenic. An aquifer test on the mine workings was performed at a pumping rate of about 550 gallons per minute. The arsenic concentration in pumped water was 33 ppb. In addition to wells within Keystone, samples from the water supply at nearby Mount Rushmore National Memorial have shown arsenic concentrations greater than 10 ppb, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s maximum contaminant level for arsenic in drinking water. Limestone-based technology for removal of arsenic from drinking water is an innovative and promising method that has been considered for treatment of water at Keystone. In batch testing with water from Keystone Well #4, limestone removed about 65% of arsenic from solution. A related problem of arsenic removal from drinking water involves disposal of the waste product, which is critical for commercial viability of removal technologies. Current research is investigating thermal stability of the waste in order to determine the potential for recycling of the material during manufacture of cement.

RADON EXPOSURE AND CARCINOGENIC CELL TRANSFORMATION The highest radiation burden to miners is due to inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products. The quantification of the risk associated with this radiation burden is complicated by modeldependent lung dosimetry, insufficient accuracy of past human exposure data as well as lacking knowledge about potential synergism of various carcinogens. Nevertheless, it is evident from epidemiological studies of miners that inhalation of elevated levels of radon daughters is correlated with increased lung cancer incidence (UNSCEAR, 1977). The situation is further complicated by the lack of reliable data on the biological variability of the latency period for the development of lung tumor under varying exposure conditions. At present information on variation with age is scarce, however, it is indicated that the excess lung cancer rate for workers exposed to high radon levels is considerably higher, if exposure occurs at ages over 40 years as compared to under 30 years of age (Sevc, Kunz, Placek, 1976). Furthermore, latency period is shorter by 6 - 7 years for smokers exposed to elevated radon levels than for non-smokers (Fry, 1976). Analysis of US- and CSR-uranium miner data revealed that the mean latency period is in the order of about 15 years (Jacobi, 1973). These uncertainties, together with medical diagnostic shortcomings, lead to the dissatisfying situation that at present the detection of radon induced injury of mining personal is primarily the assessment of the endpoint, i.e. radiation induced cancerous transformation of lung cells with typically less than 10% chance for recovery. Therefore it would be advantageous to develop practically applicable diagnostic aids to indicate already early precancerogenic changes of cell characteristics. This would permit the identification of specific population groups at increased risk for the development of lung cancer, thereby increasing the chances of more successful medical treatment. Despite continuous improvements in the reliability of test methods for the diagnosis of cancer cells there is still need for techniques, which enable the detection of transformed cells before the onset of invasion of the host organism. It is generally recognized that the transformation of a cell into a malignant state leads to a change of the cell surface, indicating a correlation between membrane-specific immunological properties and loss of growth control. Surface alterations on cells appear to be responsible in part for the malignant state and are not simply secondary effects of the transformation (Schnebli and Burger, 1973). Furthermore, membranes of cancer cells differ significantly from those of normal cells, particularly, in permeability properties (Rastogi, 1976). In dying cells, proteins, glycoproteins, peptides, aminoacids and their breakdown products are released, which block the permeation of the membrane itself. A mammalian cell can be considered as a 3-phase system (interior, boundary, environment) with the membrane forming a heterogeneous barrier between two subsystems. Under normal circumstances a difference of chemical potential is maintained on both sides of the membrane, causing an ion gradient across and fixed surface charges on the membrane. This results in a membrane resting potential (MRP) between cytoplasm and the bulk medium. It has been shown that MRP is a highly sensitive indicator for cellular reactions due to physical, chemical and biological agents, particularly whenever phenomena of transport and ion gradients as well as permeability are involved (Redmann, 1980). The primary interaction of the agent "ionizing radiation" with any form of living matter occurs at the cellular level. The component with the highest hit probability is the cell membrane. In the study presented MRP-changes of human cells were investigated with simultaneous measurements during irradiation and post-irradiation intervals up to six days. Furthermore, the suitability of MRP-measurements of human cells was tested as an indicator for early changes of cellular properties prior to the histological confirmation of carcinogenic transformation. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Lung cells The biological specimen used were cultured human lung cells and human lung biopsy samples. Monolayers of lung fibroblasts (W138) were grown in petridishes using conventional culture techniques. In addition, transformed lung cells (W138SV13, subline 2RA) were used applying similar culture methods. All petridishes were incubated at 37°C and only cells in logarithmic growth phase were used. Freshly excised lung biopsy samples were obtained from randomly selected male and female patients (20 cases), where suspected or unclear malignancies were indicated by clinical or X-ray observations. At the time of sampling 80 % of the patients were or had been smokers in the past. The samples were taken by means of a stiff bronchoscope introduced into the trachea under local anasthesia with 1 % Novesinsolution (preparation with Atropin and Pantopen). This permitted the observation of both main bronchi down to the segmental bronchials. From each patient two tissue samples were excised from the mucusepithelial layer under visual control with fiber optics and transferred immediately into 1 % NaClsolution. El Teniente Mine expansion plans are currently under development and construction stages through an integrated project strategy that will allow the continuity of future mining. The deepest sector corresponds to Andes Norte Project that faced rockburst risks during tunneling in a completely different manner, implementing different actions for the mitigation of seismic hazard and seismic risk management, based on the following main aspects: rock mass preconditioning techniques such as destress blasting and hydraulic fracturing, improvement of rock support design with the inclusion of elements with higher energy dissipation capacities, use of mechanized equipment for the most critical activities in addition to re-entry protocols and improvements in geological, geomechanical and seismic data collection procedures to reduce the uncertainty of rock mass behavior. The current seismic risk management strategy integrates all of these elements and is the basis of construction methodologies in use, supporting the technical feasibility of tunneling in high-stress environments.

Chromite ore processing tailings and low-grade manganese ores are typically considered waste due to their limited or negligible utility, leading to environmental and storage concerns. Researchers globally have explored various methods to utilize or upgrade these wastes, particularly because dumping chromite ore has been linked to severe health issues through Cr(VI) leaching. Individually, these ores lack economic value, and there has not been research on simultaneously reducing both low-grade ores. In this study, the focus lies on smelting these ores together, aiming to create a precursor alloy for 200 series stainless steel scrap. Initial research indicates the potential for scrap formation, validated through laboratory experiments with varying coke rate, basicity and holding time. The investigation discovered that smelting this combination could yield a metal product consisting of 59 percent Fe, 24.93 percent Cr, 7.56 percent Mn, 0.62 percent Ni and 0.93 percent Si. The optimum basicity was found to be 0.6 with 80 percent recovery. Notably, this process eliminates intermediate steps in 200 series stainless steel production, potentially reducing overall carbon dioxide emissions. This proposed method represents a cleaner, sustainable approach to repurpose these two waste ores, projecting a net profit of US$330/t.

This paper describes the laboratory study which permitted an exploration of high grinding ball consumption in the secondary open circuit wet grinding mills at the Sidbec-Normines plant, Port Cartier, Québec. Corrosion undoubtedly exists but is of minor importance. Abrasion resulting from the physical nature of the company's iron concentrate is the main reason for the high ball wear. It was found that at least 30% reduction in ball consumption is possible by decreasing attrition grinding through the use of lifters in the mill. At the industrial level this would entail more lifters and/or higher lifters in the mill linings.

The properties of interfacial water at hydrophilic surfaces are of great importance in many technological areas including flotation, solid-liquid separation, dispersion and emulsions, flocculation, adsorption, corrosion, and soil contamination. This paper examines the use of FTIR/internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS) to study the spectral characteristics of interfacial water at silica surfaces. FTIR spectra were characterized by consideration of the OH stretching region (3000-3800 cm-1) associated with the vibrational spectra of interfacial water. The broad peak in this region was deconvoluted in order to isolate overlapping spectral features that describe the nature of hydrogen bonding in interfacial water. Three distinct bands were found; -3600 cm-1 (free OH), -3400 cm-1 (incomplete tetrahedral coordination), and -3240 cm-1 (complete tetrahedral coordination) and the variation of their intensities with pH was found to be significant. This spectral information helps to explain orientation and bond ordering of interfacial water molecules at hydrophilic surfaces.

The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

The Ship Canal Water Quality Project (SCWQP) includes a 2.7-mile long, 18'-10" internal diameter tunnel which is located inWest Seattle. Tunneling in urban areas and soft ground conditions (Till and Till-like soils in Seattle) is associated with the risk of settlements, especially in presence of groundwater above the alignment. The Designer foresaw the use of soil improvement (jet grouting) outside of the launch shaft to mitigate the risk of flowing ground and to provide a redundant sealing. The Contractor proposed and ultimately successfully executed a different approach by using a “Steel Bell System” or Pressurized Can as described in this paper.

Lime made in a coal-fired, rotary kiln has two distinct parts: the interior of the pebble which constitutes about 90% to 95% of the mass, and the surface dust layer which is the remaining 5% to 10%. Uncalcined carbonate and impurities in the product may be present and will not contribute to the hydration reaction. Sulfur, in the form of calcium sulfate, inhibits the hydration reaction out of all proportion to its actual weigh-percent concentration (perhaps more than 100 times). If the stone contains dolomite, this will also inhibit the reaction as its rate of hydration may be nearly 3 orders of magnitude slower than that of calcium oxide. Early in the hydration reaction dolomite appears practically inert, but given sufficient time, it will hydrate. The heat of reaction is nearly the same as for calcium oxide, but the time necessary for complete hydration may be hours; whereas for calcium oxide it is only fractions of a second. The dust layer on the surface also inhibits hydration as it contains a collection of compounds which have low heats of hydration. This layer can tie up additional calcium and delay or prevent its reaction. In addition to these chemical processes, an important physical characteristic of the lime is its specific surface area. This is effected by the thermodynamics of calcination and the original stone grain chemistry. All of these factors are agglomerated in the gross slaking rate of lime. The total hydration of the chemical complex that is called commercial lime can be more easily understood by considering the individual reactions and combining them to form a more comprehensive picture of the situation. Calcium oxide and magnesium oxide hydrate similarly, differing only in their reaction kinetics. Dolomite, however, reacts differently than a simple mixture of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide as its hydration is strongly influenced by calcination thermo-dynamics and stone grain structure. Finally, the dust hydration and composition should be examined Understanding these reactions enables one to examine hydration reaction graphs with more insight into the factors which determine their shape.

The determination of the surface area which may be impacted by underground mining is an important consideration in subsidence engineering. A number of parameters have been utilized to identify this influence area, most notably the angles of draw and break. This paper discusses the implications of selecting an appropriate "damage angle" for defining a potential damage area due to mining, within which surface structures may be impacted Furthermore, the influence of both mining and geological factors, such as mining width and depth and overburden lithology, on this angle is examined, using the Surface Deformation Prediction System (S.D.P.S) software. Finally, recommendations are given for applying these concepts in subsidence control.

In tunnel condition assessment, the trend is towards comprehensive 3D measurement combined with high quality image texture to document and quantify damages to the tunnel surface and to create a cohesive data base of the structural conditions throughout its lifespan. The faster such measurements can be made on site, the less it impacts traffic conditions of the highly sophisticated subway systems. The Dibit high-speed 3D scanning system which is based on Photogrammetry and LiDAR technology enables data acquisition in tunnels at a speed of up to 60 mph. Given the high rate of speed the system can operate, tunnel shutdowns can be drastically reduced, and tunnel safety increased. The photorealistic texturing of the 3D-model allows the identification and analysis of smallest material damage (e.g., cracks ≥0.3 mm wide). The publication illustrates technical details and 3D results of the innovative system from measurements that were performed in the subway tunnels of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System in San Francisco, CA (total length 66.23 km).

In recent years, it has been recognized that the high horizontal stress is an important factor that contributes to a cutter roof. When the immediate roof is thinly bedded, the presence of a high horizontal stress may first cause failure on the bedding planes or weak planes, and then a cutter roof develops as the individual stratum crushes and buckles progressively layer by layer. In this study, the stress distributions in the bedding planes of the immediate roof are analyzed for an entry-pillar system in the multiple longwall panels by using the finite element method. Then the roof failure is analyzed based on the rock failure criterion and the stress distributions.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion project in Virginia includes parallel 1.5- mile (2.4 km) tunnels constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM). The TBM launching and receiving shafts were excavated within the footprint of two reclaimed islands abutting the navigation channel for the Port of Virginia. The shaft excavations—a circular tri-cell shaft at South Island, and a circular-rectangular twin-cell shaft at North Island—were supported by slurry walls up to 190 feet (58 meters) below the island surfaces. This paper describes specic design considerations for these shafts, as well as construction and uality-oversight aspects of their excavation and construction.

Compliance standards for respirable dust which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.
