The underground coal mining systems have kept pace with the developments that have occurred in other types of mining industry. A diversified group of machines with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology and with numerous options to satisfy the miners need in a varying geological environment are now available. A brief review of this existing technology and its likely status within the next 21 years is presented. Discussed also are some of the on-going advanced developments in electronic mechanization, remote control and automation together with mine wide data monitoring and management systems and facilities to process and transmit data to remote computerized stations.

As a pioneer Herrenknecht started in 2018 to automate the production of tunnel lining segments. Since then, many automation processes became state of the art. Robots cleaning and oiling the moulds, hydraulic units opening and closing them fully independently. Artificial Intelligence (AI) controls the works and ensures the quality requirements. Data management has become a massive tool from a simple data collector towards a control and optimization tool. Sensors controlling concrete maturity and supporting the precast team to optimize the concrete mix. These state of the art and new innovations will be presented in this paper.

Placer Dome Canada owns and operates the Campbell mine and mill at Balmertown, in the north western corner of Ontario. The mine operates at 1.3 kt/d (1,500 stpd). It produced more than 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold during the last three years. Changes to the gravity concentration circuit have resulted in a 10% to 15% increase in gravity recovery. The mill head grade at the Campbell Mill is relatively high, averaging 18.5 g/t (0.54 oz/st) over the total reserve tonnage. During the past several years, the head grade was averaging close to 20 g/t (0.6 oz/st). Before 1994, gravity concentration was achieved by using a combination of conventional mineral jigs and tables. Jig concentrates were upgraded on shaking tables to produce a concentrate, which was refined to bullion. In May 1994, management decided to buy two Knelson CD 760-mm (30-in.) concentrators. The objective was to replace the existing jigs and increase gravity gold recovery by up to 15%. Gravity recovery with jigs averaged between 30% to 35%. Gravity recovery was anticipated to increase to about 50% with the Knelsons.

Traveling grate is a widely used process for iron ore pellet production; however, the thermal state of pellets in drying section is still unclear. In this study, the temperature distribution of drying section was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Based on the calculated results of airflow velocity, space temperature distribution, and the temperature change of pellets, it concluded that there is a coupling effect in drying section in traveling grate. The gas with higher temperature in DDD transfers heat to UDD through the gap of the insulation board, and the temperature gradient of the pellet bed changed before reaching the insulation board. The characteristics of pellet bed expected to appear in DDD was displayed in UDD in advance. Moreover, a contrast experiment was conducted to verify the model.

"Bastnaesite is one of the important mineral resources for the production of rare earth materials, and it is typically associated with calcite and quartz as gangue minerals. Fatty acid or hydroxamic acid are recommended collectors for bastnaesite flotation. In this research, potassium lauryl phosphate was expected to provide a stronger flotation response for bastnaesite than for the calcite and quartz gangue minerals. Using potassium lauryl phosphate as collector, the results of captive bubble contact angle measurements, zeta potential determinations and microflotation experiments for bastnaesite, calcite and quartz are reported. Greater selectivity for bastnaesite was achieved using potassium lauryl phosphate than using octyl hydroxamate as collector. These results indicate that potassium lauryl phosphate might be a promising collector in the flotation of bastnaesite ores. The computation results of universal force field (UFF) interaction energies for the mineral-reagent interactions are also reported and were found to correlate well with the experimental microflotation results.IntroductionBastnaesite ((Ce,La)FCO3) belongs to the mineral class of semisoluble salt minerals, whose characteristics include ionic bonding and limited solubility in water. Bastnaesite, for the most part, contains the cerium subgroup or the lighter rare earth elements (Zhou et al., 2014). The Mountain Pass deposit in California in the United States and the Bayan Obo deposit in Mongolia in China are the two major deposits of bastnaesite (Azizi et al., 2016; Satur et al., 2016). Calcite and/ or quartz are common gangue minerals in these and many other rare earth deposits (Jordens et al., 2014)"

The rocks exposed in the phosphate district are of Neogene age and consist of clayey quartz and phosphorite sands overlying phosphatic dolomite. The Bone Valley Formation is redefined as a marine phosphorite containing primary phosphorite and abundant terrigenous sediments. It contains a Middle Miocene vertebrate and invertebrate fauna and conformably overlies the Hawthorn Formation containing similar invertebrate fauna. A new, unnamed formation, with Pliocene and Pleistocene fauna and containing reworked phosphorite, overlies the Bone Valley disconformably. Its phosphorite is derived from the subjacent Bone Valley by post-Middle Miocene erosion and deposition in stream channels and marginal marine environments. The Bone Valley contains two main types of primary marine phosphorite. Orthocbemical phosphorite, a direct precipitate of microcrystalline phosphorite (microsphorite), occurs as a cement or binder in thin beds. Allochemical phosphorite consists of clastic phosphorite particles that were originally formed as microsphorite on another part of the shelf. Microsphorite was deposited in a very shallow open marine environment which had an abnormally high phosphorous content caused by upwelling currents. The mechanism of deposition is still in doubt, but organisms probably were a major factor. Soon after deposition, microsphorite was indurated, periodically torn up, and the resulting fragments transported and deposited elsewhere on the shelf. These processes account for a great portion of the clastic phosphorite in the Miocene deposits of Florida. The primary fossil skeletal material is of minor importance.

Constructed by stonemasons over 120 years ago, a portion of the Trout Brook Storm Sewer Interceptor (TBI) owned and operated by the Capitol Region Watershed District in Saint Paul, Minnesota, needed rehabilitation. A routine inspection of the 10-foot limestone block tunnel revealed degraded and missing mortar between the blocks, allowing significant infiltration and soil migration through the tunnel joints. Conditions, including damaged and missing blocks, were considerably worse in a 250-foot-long segment beneath a busy mainline railroad corridor. Barr’s solution included tuck-pointing to repair the mortar joints, shotcrete overlay, and construction of a hybrid cast-in-place/shotcrete “tunnel within a tunnel” to support the mainline railroad loads.

This paper examines the feasibility of combining network modeling and computational fluid dynamics for modeling of underground mine ventilation systems. Both simulation methods have specific advantages and disadvantages for analysis of mine systems. Network modeling is widely utilized by many operations and allows for assessment of current systems and simulation for planning purposes. Alternatively, CFD has been utilized only marginally by operations and is typically a research tool, requiring considerable computational power, complex models, and careful analysis and calibration of results. Network modeling allows for a holistic approach to the ventilation system, giving quantity, velocity and pressure in every branch, but CFD modeling can resolve the flow regime in 2-D or 3-D, which is idea when examination of an area on a more detailed basis is useful, such as dust and gas control. Integration of the two can allow for more flexible systems analysis. The feasibility of integration, along with application to limited underground mine data are examined.

The study upon which this paper is based was completed by Battelle's Columbus Laboratories for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1974. It is but part of an overall effort by the Corps to evaluate the costs and benefits to the nation of waterway improvements. This study is primarily concerned with future coal markets for production from those counties near the Wabash River in the heart of the Eastern Interior Province. An objective here is to consider a most pessimistic energy (and hence, coal) demand for planning purposes.

For the desulfurization of weak SO2 gas streams, Degussa developed a process using dilute H2SO4 solution containing H2O2 instead of conventional gas scrubbing with all solid absorbent medium (limestone, MgO). The process is based on fast reaction of H2O2 with SO2 yielding H2SO4 up to 70% strength, depending on off-gas tem­perature. Compared to the conventional systems with typically < 95% efficiency, independent on the raw gas SO2 concentra­tion, residual SO2 concentrations of less than 20 mg!Nm3 can be easily achieved, corresponding to nearly 100% removal. These features render the H2O2 process a very attractive, low capital cost technology to retrofit existing conventional desulfurization plants.

This paper identifies and formulates the probabilistic nature of underground coal face operations using the Semi-Markovian theory. Through this theory the probability of coal flow from a face is obtained for any given time t of a shift. These probabilities are used for determining the capacity and operating policy of a surge tank located at the shaft bottom.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted a study to identify the sources of respirable dust and appropriate dust controls applicable to today&apos;s high tonnage longwall faces. The primary source of respirable dust identified is the cutting action of the shearer; however, the pct contribution of dust from coal transport through the stageloader/crusher was significant. This was primarily due to the high rate of mining, requiring rapid and constant coal transport. Techniques implemented for the control of shearer-generated dust included high drum water flow rates, deep cutting, shearer-clearer-type external water spray systems, and radio-remote control. The high water flow rates, and an enclosed stageloader with scrubber, were used to control dust during coal transport. No novel or effective control technology exists to control dust during support advance. Administrative controls for dust avoidance, and manual and batch-activated electro-hydraulic control systems were used to keep support movers out of the dust generated during support advance.

"The “Biohydrometallurgical Center for Strategic Elements (BHMZ)” is a cooperation of 13 departments of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg fostering interdisciplinary research along the whole (bio-) hydrometallurgical process chain to extract indium and germanium from sulphide ores. Research comprises methods to (i) bring the respective metal from the source material into aqueous solution and (ii) different approaches to extract pure metal or metal-containing materials from the solution. Within the BHMZ the Department of Underground Mining Methods deals with the design and implementation of an underground testing facility for bacterial in-situ stope leaching in its own “Research and Educational Mine”. The intention is to investigate innovative approaches for leaching technologies by crack initiation due to hydraulic fracturing or water pressure blasting under consideration of leaching kinetics and underground conditions. It is planned to set up two testing units comparing energy input and the metal output of conventional (blasting) as well as one of the innovative technologies. Aim of subproject is to establish an innovative and sustainable method ready for up-scaling. BACKGROUND Metals like copper and zinc mainly occur as sulphide ores in nature. Due to the insolubility of these sulphide minerals the respective metal is commonly extracted by pyrometallurgical processing methods. These methods require several steps of enrichment of concentrates such as flotation and roasting (Figure 1) under extensive energy utilization. Additionally, this arouses the emission of sulphur dioxide gas which can have a negative impact on the environment in form of acid rain, as long it is not caught by sulphuric acid facilities (Schippers et al. 2011). However, to treat the ore on the surface either open pit or underground mining operations are necessary. This implies operation steps from excavating, loading, and conveying/hauling, to dumping with the sub-processes crushing and stashing. Due to the tendency of increasing depth, more complex ores and decreasing ore grades of the mineable deposits as well as increasing energy and environmental costs these conventional mining and processing methods become in general more costly and difficult to apply. Hence, hydrometallurgical processes and especially the suitability of bioleaching as an alternative in-situ method for future mining projects should be examined. Leaching by means of microorganisms is a combination of mining and processing by converting the insoluble metal into an aqueous form. This technology is an economically beneficial and environmentally friendly alternative to pyrometallurgical processing methods especially for primary and secondary low grade ores. Mainly the extraction of copper but also of zinc and lead from sulphide ores is state-of-the-art in surface leaching operations like heap and dump leaching (Figure 1)."

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica plate and glass sphere in sodium oleate solutions. Hydrophobic forces were observed when the two surfaces were activated by CaOH+ or MgOH+ ions. The force measurements conducted in the absence of the surfactant showed that the activated silica surfaces do not exhibit the primary hydration forces that have been observed between unactivated surfaces. The activation mechanism was studied by calculating the contributions from electrostatic and chemical interactions to the total free energy change. The results suggest that the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes is controlled mainly by the lateral interactions between the adsorbed species on the silica surface.

Virtually no two mines operate with the same geographic, geologic, and mining conditions. It follows chat problems vary with the conditions from mine to mine or often from one section to another in the same mine. Actual situations are described, and a technique of "stacking" maps to predict hazards is presented. Two case histories of the use of multiple overlays are de- scribed. The first deals with a property that was examined before the start of mining. The second is a property in which severe ground control problems were encountered and the relationship between the problem areas and known conditions were found to be related.

The evaluation and development of the Eastern North Carolina phosphate deposit resulted in one of the world&apos;s largest and most modern phosphate mines and fertilizer complexes at an investment in excess of $90,000,000. The resulting ore beneficiation process showed excellent correlation with pilot plant data. A number of variations from current industrial practices were introduced and projected from bench scale tests through pilot plant to production. Principal among these variations were the following: 1) removal of magnesium by classification, 2) simultaneous flotation of coarse and fine phosphate, 3) the use of saponified fatty acid, 4) utilization of filter wash water for deoiling, 5) utilization of a rougher concentrate for acidulation, 6) calcination of flotation concentrates, and 7) elimination of grinding prior to the manufacture of phosphoric acid.

The new combination gypsum plaster and gypsum wallboard plant of Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A., the first of its kind in Mexico went into production in April of 1969. This was approximately fourteen months from the signing of the formal order for the plant and equipment. Compania Industrial Kaiser S.A. is an affiliate of the Kaiser Gypsum Company in the United States and will market practically the same line of products and to the same standards as those produced in American plants. Located in the City of Puebla, the plant will readily service the major Mexican sales areas. It is approximately 85 miles away from Mexico City on a modern, four-lane, divided highway and distribution to other major consumer areas can be readily effected by the use of a good highway system, as well as, by rail. This, plant is the, sixteenth Gypsum Wallboard Mill supplied abroad by my company, United States Wallboard Machinery Company. Other installations are in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, England, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, South Africa, Latvia and Germany. Two new mills are on order; a small unit for Brazil and a comparatively large unit for New Zealand. All these mills have one thing in common with plants in the United States and Canada; they are equipped with standard, time-proven and tested equipment and they are designed in accor¬dance with the latest engineering thinking in order to produce efficiently, the highest quality product at lowest cost. They differ generally in the size of plant, the factors that brought them into being and in the market that they supply. I believe that these differences will be of interest to you.

INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. As the mining industry begins efforts to examine the feasibility of extraterrestrial resource utilization, the extraction and processing of icy regolith containing water and other volatile materials will be the initial focus for future expansion of capabilities. Pure water is essential for human consumption, and a source of oxygen and hydrogen. The latter, along with the volatile materials, lend themselves to the creation of fuels that may be used for further space exploration at distances not currently feasible. For any extraterrestrial scoping project, the transport of materials to geoscientists remains virtually impossible. Therefore, analysis must be done in-situ, possibly millions of miles away from the nearest human. To address the need for geologic resource estimation in the absence of geoscientists, an infrared framework has been developed for the analysis of water ice content in simulants of permanently shaded lunar regolith. This framework relies on a convolutional neural network model for the rapid analysis of percent water ice content in samples, at which point standard geostatistical methods may be employed.

The history of mine safety legislation in this country is also a history of mine explosions. Nearly every piece of safety legislation that has been introduced or amended has resulted from some type of a disaster. When coal was first discovered and mined, it was extracted from along outcrops. As the coal became depleted near the surface, underground mining developed. When the first mine penetrated the outcrop, a great number of problems developed, many of which remain with us today. One of those problems is the potential for mine ignitions and explosions. Naturally, when underground mining progressed a few feet into the outcrop, some type of artificial light was needed. Early accounts of mining in Spain, Italy, Japan, and Great Britain indicate that torches served to light the mines. Later, candles were used, and still later, earthern oil lamps containing fish oil were used. As workings got deeper, explosions began to occur. When one did occur it was thought to be the work of goblins or the devil. As explosions became more frequent, it became very obvious that the use of open flames for lighting was very dangerous. A substitute was sought. Dried fish skins which gave off a weak phosphorescent light were tried. A mixture of flour and lime made from oyster shells called Canton phosphorous was also tried unsuccessfully. Fireflies in a bottle were also used.
